Abstract

The existing ECRH system at W7-X consists of 10 gyrotrons, with output power levels ranging from 0.6 MW up to 1.0 MW each at a frequency of 140 GHz, quasi-optical transmission lines and microwave launchers at the plasma vessel. Compared to other large fusion experiments, W7-X has a relatively low power-to-volume ratio. However high heating power is particularly necessary for achieving high plasma beta values, where the improved confinement of fast ions, one of the optimization criteria of W7-X, can be examined. It is therefore necessary to expand the ECRH systems in several consecutive steps. It is planned to increase the number of gyrotron positions from 10 to 12 and at the same time to evolve the gyrotron output power in several development steps from 1 MW to nominal 1.5 MW and, finally, up to 2 MW. At the same time, the transmission lines will also be upgraded for 2 MW operation. A special effort is also made to improve the reliability of the system by the fast control system.

Abstract

ECRH&CD is one of the favorite heating system for magnetically confined nuclear fusion plasmas. KIT is strongly involved in the development of high power gyrotrons for use in ECRH systems for nuclear fusion. KIT is upgrading the sub-components of the existing 2 MW, 170 GHz coaxial-cavity short-pulse gyrotron to support long-pulse operation up to 1 s, all components will be equipped with a specific active cooling system. Two important developments for future high power, highly efficient gyrotrons will be discussed: design of gyrotrons with high operating frequency (∼ 240 GHz) and efficiency enhancement by using advanced collector designs with multi-staged voltage depression.

Abstract

The European 1 MW, 170 GHz CW industrial prototype gyrotron for ECRH&CD on ITER was under test at the KIT test facility during 2016. In order to optimize the gyrotron operation, the tube was thoroughly tested in the short-pulse regime, with pulse lengths below 10 ms, for a wide range of operational parameters. The operation was extended to longer pulses with a duration of up to 180 s. In this work we present in detail the achievements and the challenges that were faced during the long-pulse experimental campaign.

Abstract

The electron cyclotron (EC) system of ITER for the initial configuration is designed to provide 20MW of RF power into the plasma during 3600s and a duty cycle of up to 25% for heating and (co and counter) non-inductive current drive, also used to control the MHD plasma instabilities. The EC system is being procured by 5 domestic agencies plus the ITER Organization (IO). F4E has the largest fraction of the EC procurements, which includes 8 high voltage power supplies (HVPS), 6 gyrotrons, the ex-vessel waveguides (includes isolation valves and diamond windows) for all launchers, 4 upper launchers and the main control system. F4E is working with IO to improve the overall design of the EC system by integrating consolidated technological advances, simplifying the interfaces, and doing global engineering analysis and assessments of EC heating and current drive physics and technology capabilities. Examples are the optimization of the HVPS and gyrotron requirements and performance relative to power modulation for MHD control, common qualification programs for diamond window procurements, assessment of the EC grounding system, and the optimization of the launcher steering angles for improved EC access. Here we provide an update on the status of Europe’s contribution to the ITER EC system, and a summary of the global activities underway by F4E in collaboration with IO for the optimization of the subsystems.

After an initial testing period at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the upgraded EU 1 MW, 170 GHz continuous wave (CW) industrial prototype gyrotron (TH1509U) for Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating and Current Drive (ECRH&CD) in ITER has been transferred to the Swiss Plasma Center (SPC) to be tested in an ITER relevant configuration, to reach the performance level required by Fusion for Energy (F4E) to qualify it for the ITER project, and to increase the pulse length to very long pulses.

Abstract

A research activity in the Institute for Plasma Science and Technology of National Research Council (ISTP-CNR, Italy, former IFP-CNR) and in L.T. Calcoli (LTC, Italy) is aimed at the design and construction of calorimetric loads for absorption and measurement of high power millimeter-waves in the electron cyclotron frequency range. Recently, two CW 170 GHz loads, one for the European ITER gyrotron test facility and the other for the FALCON test- bed, have been installed at the Swiss Plasma Center (SPC, Switzerland). One short pulse (2 s) load for 1 MW, designed and optimised to operate at two different frequencies (84 GHz and 126 GHz), was provided for testing and conditioning two new dual-frequency gyrotrons for the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV, Switzerland). Two additional CW loads, designed for absorbing powers higher than 1 MW, have been delivered to the National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology (QST, Japan) and exploited for the acceptance tests and the conditioning of the prototype of the Japanese ITER gyrotron. The present status and the most recent experimental results achieved in the framework of this development activity are reported in the paper.

19. Mechanically ventilated double skin Façade with semi-transparent photovoltaics, implementing electrical storage and heat pumps to reduce peak demand

Abstract

Semi-Transparent Photovoltaics (STPV) can be integrated on Double Skin Facades (DSF) to enhance the electrical and thermal performance of a building. In a mechanically ventilated DSF, the heat extracted from the DSF can be used to increase the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of a heat pump based mechanical system, or it can be introduced directly to the building. In addition, the STPV integrated on the outermost layer of the DSF, can control the solar gains, may allow controlled levels of the daylight into the zone and creates a microclimate around the building. In the present study we investigate the mismatch between the electricity production by the STPV and the electricity needed for heating and lighting by the adjacent building zones and develop ways of reducing this mismatch. A DSF-STPV combination, coupled with battery storage within the building, is considered in order to shift the peak demand of the building and provide better matching of generation and loads. Because STPV is integrated in the DSF, the heating demand during the day decreases as the building receives solar heat gains and at the same time produces electricity. This electricity produced by the STPV can be stored in a battery and later be used at the grid peak hours to reduce the peak demand by operating the heat pump. The preheated air, that is flowing within the cavity of the DSF-STPV, assists an air sourced heat pump to increase its COP and the heat produced is used to keep the building warm during the grid peak hours when the set point is reduced. With the use of such a predictive heating strategy, the peak demand of the building can coincide with the peak of the solar electricity production resulting in more than 80% reduction in the electricity consumption during the peak demand hours of the grid.

Abstract

The future EC systems will consist of several gyrotron sources providing MW-level millimeter wave power at a frequency around or above 170 GHz. The development of matched loads is necessary to test the new sources, the components for the transmission lines and the launchers, and must ensure high qualification for compatibility with the nuclear environment. The development at IFP-CNR and LTC of several compact high-power prototypes during the last decade led to a refinement of the overall design, resulting in the present low-reflectivity vacuum-compatible loads. The activity on loads is supported by F4E in view of the development of the EU gyrotron for ITER and required high-power tests at QST (Naka, Japan). Qualification is now supported by new tests at SPC (Lausanne, Switzerland) using the FALCON test-bed designed to test components and the EU gyrotron prototype for the EC system of ITER. These high-power tests, performed on the first CW prototype load (provided with 16 + 16 cooling channels in parallel) and shown in this paper, highlighted the need to improve the mechanical, vacuum and hydraulic design to reach the final goal of 1000s at ∼1 MW.

Abstract

A microwave pulse compressor (MPC) consisting of an iris, a straight waveguide section, and a T-junction can be used in order to convert a long pulse with lower power to a shorter pulse with a higher power. A significant compression gain can be achieved, provided that the system is designed precisely. The duration of the compressed pulse is proportional to the cavity length, thus imposing a constraint on the development of mobile systems. In this work, we present the circuit/transmission-line-based design methodology that we follow in order to fold the cavity (while retaining the same electrical length) by using T-junction turns. For example, we design a 1.3-GHz folded compressor and compare its performance to the corresponding one of a straight-cavity compressor. The 3-D full-wave simulations with CST Studio Suite and experimental measurements with the developed compressor confirm the accuracy of the proposed design methodology.

The development of matched loads is necessary to test the new sources, the components for the transmission lines and the launchers, and must ensure high qualification for compatibility with the nuclear environment. The development at IFP-CNR and LTC of several compact high-power prototypes during the last decade led to a refinement of the overall design, resulting in the present low-reflectivity vacuum-compatible loads. The activity on loads is supported by F4E in view of the development of the EU gyrotron for ITER and required high-power tests at QST (Naka, Japan). Qualification is now supported by new tests at SPC (Lausanne, Switzerland) using the FALCON test-bed designed to test components and the EU gyrotron prototype for the EC system of ITER. These high-power tests, performed on the first CW prototype load (provided with 16 + 16 cooling channels in parallel) and shown in this paper, highlighted the need to improve the mechanical, vacuum and hydraulic design to reach the final goal of 1000s at ∼1 MW. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

33rd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 2553-2559, Integrating photovoltaic panels (PV) with the building envelope increases the cost-effectiveness of the installation by replacing common building materials, and the potential for generation of useful heat along with the electricity production. Large PV systems intended for building roof and/or facade applications require active cooling of the PV to avoid overheating and resulting reduction of the electrical efficiency, and decelerate the system’s degradation. The heat collected by the cooling medium may be utilized in various ways such as to preheat fresh air, as a source for an air-source heat pump. Air-based systems are generally better suited for large installations, they are however, less efficient in extracting heat from the PV due to the thermo-physical properties of air and therefore need enhancements for their thermal performance. This study investigates ways of enhancing air-based Building Integrated Photovoltaic/Thermal (BIPV/T) systems, focusing on the use of multiple-inlets and presents the development and initial testing of a BIPV/T curtain wall prototype. The testing of the prototype showed superior performance for the double-inlet versus the single-inlet configuration, thermally (up to 18% higher thermal output), lower peak PV temperatures (reduced by up to 3.6oC) and a marginal increase in electrical output due to enhanced cooling.
