Collective behaviours, such as flocking in birds or decision making by bee colonies, are some of the most intriguing behavioural phenomena in the animal kingdom. The study of collective behaviour focuses on the interactions between individuals within groups, which typically occur over close ranges and short timescales, and how these interactions drive larger scale properties such as group size, information transfer within groups and group-level decision making. To date, however, most studies have focused on snapshots, typically studying collective behaviour over short timescales up to minutes or hours. However, being a biological trait, much longer timescales are important in animal collective behaviour, particularly how individuals change over their lifetime (the domain of developmental biology) and how individuals change from one generation to the next (the domain of evolutionary biology). Here, we give an overview of collective behaviour across timescales from the short to the long, illustrating how a full understanding of this behaviour in animals requires much more research attention on its developmental and evolutionary biology. Our review forms the prologue of this special issue, which addresses and pushes forward understanding the development and evolution of collective behaviour, encouraging a new direction for collective behaviour research. Objectives: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of two‐dimensional ultrasound at 11–14 weeks' gestation as a screening test for individual fetal anomalies and to identify factors impacting on screening performance. Methods: This was a systematic review and meta‐analysis that was developed and registered with PROSPERO (CRD42018111781). MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science Core Collection and the Cochrane Library were searched for studies evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of screening for 16 predefined, non‐cardiac, congenital anomalies considered to be of interest to the early anomaly scan. We included prospective and retrospective studies from any healthcare setting conducted in low‐risk, mixed‐risk and unselected populations. The reference standard was the detection of an anomaly on postnatal or postmortem examination. Data were extracted to populate 2 × 2 tables and a random‐effects model was used to determine the diagnostic accuracy of screening for the predefined anomalies (individually and as a composite). Secondary analyses were performed to determine the impact on detection rates of imaging protocol, type of ultrasound modality, publication year and index of sonographer suspicion at the time of scanning. Post‐hoc secondary analysis was conducted to assess performance among studies published during or after 2010. Risk of bias assessment and quality assessment were undertaken for included studies using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies‐2 tool. Results: From 5684 citations, 202 papers underwent full‐text review, resulting in the inclusion of 52 studies comprising 527 837 fetuses, of which 2399 were affected by one or more of the 16 predefined anomalies. Individual anomalies were not equally amenable to detection on first‐trimester ultrasound: a high (> 80%) detection rate was reported for severe conditions, including acrania (98%), gastroschisis (96%), exomphalos (95%) and holoprosencephaly (88%); the detection rate was lower for open spina bifida (69%), lower urinary tract obstruction (66%), lethal skeletal dysplasias (57%) and limb‐reduction defects (50%); and the detection rate was below 50% for facial clefts (43%), polydactyly (40%) and congenital diaphragmatic hernia (38%). Conditions with a low (< 30%) detection rate included bilateral renal agenesis (25%), closed spina bifida (21%), isolated cleft lip (14%) and talipes (11%). Specificity was > 99% for all anomalies. Secondary analysis showed that detection improved with advancing publication year, and that the use of imaging protocols had a statistically significant impact on screening performance (P < 0.0001). Conclusions: The accurate detection of congenital anomalies using first‐trimester ultrasound is feasible, although detection rates and false‐positive rates depend on the type of anomaly. The use of a standardized protocol allows for diagnostic performance to be maximized, particularly for the detection of spina bifida, facial clefts and limb‐reduction defects. Highlighting the types of anomalies amenable to diagnosis and determining factors enhancing screening performance can support the development of first‐trimester anomaly screening programs. © 2024 The Authors. We present a rare case of a common carotid artery wall hematoma after ultrasound-guided parathyroid fine-needle aspiration. The hematoma was detected within seconds from needle insertion, extending along the common carotid artery wall from the lower neck to the common carotid artery bifurcation, and it was quickly restricted with firm pressure. The patient only reported mild discomfort. A follow-up assessment by a vascular surgeon two hours later showed no signs of ischemic events and complete absorption of the hematoma without further clinical consequences. Physicians performing parathyroid fine-needle aspiration must be aware of this rare complication, which may be easily overlooked. Continuous meticulous sonographic surveillance during the fine needle aspiration procedure is the only way to directly diagnose this complication and apply immediate pressure to restrict it.

Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) pose an immediate threat for patient's life and endovascular repair (EVAR) is currently the preferred treatment modality in the presence of suitable anatomy. This is determined based on the requirements of each endograft as described in the instructions for use (IFU). The new ALTO system (Endologix, Irvin, CA, U.S.A.), can accommodate a great range of anatomies such as short necks and/or narrow access, but its unique design requires specific technical modifications during treatment of ruptured AAAs. The standard double balloon technique has long been described and it is used to provide circulatory support during EVAR for ruptured AAA. While this technique is straightforward with the use of endografts with a traditional design, this would not be the case if one uses the ALTO system. In that case specific maneuvers would be required to treat AAA patients in an acute setting. The ALTO system although being able to treat AAAs with adverse anatomy, it may not be appropriate during treatment of ruptured AAA patients with profound hemodynamic instability. A careful evaluation of the individual's patient anatomy and hemodynamic condition is mandatory in order to decide the best endograft for each case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
