Clouds are notoriously difficult to simulate. Here, we separate and quantify the impact of Pacific climate modes on total cloud cover (TCC) variability, using reliable satellite observations together with state-of-the art reanalysis outputs, over the 1979–2020 period. The two most prominent modes of annual TCC variability show intense loadings over the Pacific basin and explain most of the variance in what could be considered the "signal" in satellite TCC data. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) provides coupled TCC—sea surface temperature (SST) patterns that are linked to the Eastern Pacific (EP) ElNiño—Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Central Pacific (CP) ENSO in a physically consistent manner. The two ENSO modes dominate global coupled SST–TCC variability with the footprint of the CP ENSO explaining roughly half of the variance induced by the EP ENSO among these coupled fields. Both the EP and the CP ENSO exert an influence on Pacific decadal TCC variability. The impact of both ENSO modes on global total cloud cover variability is amplified by two positive feedbacks. The ability of TiO2 to generate reactive oxygen species under UV radiation makes it an efficient candidate in antimicrobial studies. In this context, the preparation of TiO2 microparticles coated with Ca- and Cu-based composite layers over which Cu(II), Cu(I), and Cu(0) species were identified is presented here. The obtained materials were characterized by a wide range of analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy (TEM, SEM), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), and UV-VIS spectroscopy. The antimicrobial efficiency was evaluated using qualitative and quantitative standard methods and standard clinical microbial strains. A significant aspect of this composite is that the antimicrobial properties were evidenced both in the presence and absence of the light, as result of competition between photo and electrical effects. However, the antibacterial effect was similar in darkness and light for all samples. Because no photocatalytic properties were found in the absence of copper, the results sustain the antibacterial effect of the electric field (generated by the electrostatic potential of the composite layer) both under the dark and in light conditions. In this way, the composite layers supported on the TiO2 microparticles' surface can offer continuous antibacterial protection and do not require the presence of a permanent light source for activation. We present the first annual oxygen isotope record (1900–2016) from the latewood (LW) cellulose of oak trees (Quercus robur) from NW Romania. As expected, the results correlate negatively with summer relative humidity, sunshine duration and precipitation and positively with summer maximum temperature. Spatial correlation analysis reveals a clear signal reflecting drought conditions at a European scale. Interannual variability is influenced by large-scale atmospheric circulation and by surface temperatures in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. There is considerable potential to produce long and well-replicated oak tree ring stable isotope chronologies in Romania which would allow reconstructions of both regional drought and large-scale circulation variability over southern and central Europe. Although previous statistical attempts of monthly/seasonal SSIE forecasts show a relatively reduced skill, when the trend is removed, we show here that the September sea ice extent has a high predictive skill, up to 4 months ahead, based on previous months' oceanic and atmospheric conditions. Our statistical model skillfully captures the interannual variability of the SSIE and could provide a valuable tool for identifying relevant regions and oceanic and atmospheric parameters that are important for the sea ice development in the Arctic and for detecting sensitive/critical regions in global coupled climate models with a focus on sea ice formation. Abstract: The climate of the Sahara and Arabian Deserts during the Little Ice Age is not well known, due to a lack of annually resolved natural and documentary archives. We present an annual reconstruction of temperature and aridity derived from Sr/Ca and oxygen isotopes in a coral of the desert‐surrounded northern Red Sea. Our data indicate that the eastern Sahara and Arabian Deserts did not experience pronounced cooling during the late Little Ice Age (~1750–1850) but suggest an even more arid mean climate than in the following ~150 years. The mild temperatures are broadly in line with predominantly negative phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation during the Little Ice Age. The more arid climate is best explained by meridional advection of dry continental air from Eurasia. We find evidence for an abrupt termination of the more arid climate after 1850, coincident with a reorganization of the atmospheric circulation over Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In austral spring 2016 the Antarctic region experienced anomalous sea ice retreat in all sectors, with sea ice extent in October and November 2016 being the lowest in the Southern Hemisphere over the observational period (1979-present). The extreme sea ice retreat was accompanied by widespread warming along the coastal areas as well as in the interior of the Antarctic continent. This exceptional event occurred along with a strong negative phase of the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and the moistest and warmest spring on record, over large areas covering the Indian Ocean, the Ross Sea and the Weddell Sea. In October 2016, the positive anomalies of the totally integrated water vapor (IWV) and 2m air temperature (T2m) over the Indian Ocean, western Pacific, Bellingshausen Sea and southern part of Ross Sea were unprecedented in the last 39 years. In October and November 2016, when the largest magnitude of negative daily sea ice concentration anomalies was observed, repeated episodes of poleward advection of warm and moist air took place. Tree-ring maximum latewood density (MXD) records from Fennoscandia have been widely used to infer regional- and hemispheric-scale mean temperature variability. Here, we explore if MXD records can also be used to infer past variability of summer temperature extremes across Fennoscandia. The first principal component (PC1) based on 34 MXD chronologies in Fennoscandia explains 50% of the total variance in the observed warm-day extremes over the period 1901-1978. Variations in both observed summer warm-day extremes and PC1 are influenced by the frequency of anomalous anticyclonic pattern over the region, summer sea surface temperatures over the Baltic, North and Norwegian Seas, and the strength of the westerly zonal wind at 200 hPa across Fennoscandia. Both time series are associated with nearly identical atmospheric circulation and SST patterns according to composite map analysis. In a longer context, the first PC based on 3 millennium-long MXD chronologies in central and northern Fennoscandia explains 83% of the total variance of PC1 from the 34 MXD chronologies over the period 1901-1978, 48% of the total variance of the summer warm-day extreme variability over the period 1901-2006, and 36% of the total variance in the frequency of a summer anticyclonic pattern centered over eastern-central Fennoscandia in the period 1948-2006. The frequency of summer warm-day extremes in Fennoscandia is likely linked to a meridional shift of the northern mid-latitude jet stream. This study shows that the MXD network can be used to infer the variability of past summer warm-day extremes and the frequency of the associated summer anticyclonic circulation pattern over Fennoscandia. Climate indices are often used as a climate monitoring tool, allowing us to understand how the frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme weather events are changing over time. Here, based on complex statistical analysis we identify highly correlated significant pairs of compound events at the highest spatial resolution, on a monthly temporal scale across Europe. Continental-scale monthly analysis unleashes information on compound events such as high-risk zones, hotspots, monthly shifts of hotspots and trends, risk exposure to land cover and population, and identification of maximum increasing trends. While there are many studies on single or compound climate extremes there are only a few studies that addresses the relationship between pairs of hazards, the incorporation of bioclimatic indices, the determination of a grid best-fit copula approach, and the outlining relevance of this work of compound event risks with exposures. In this respect, here, using 27-bivariate and 10-trivariate copula models, we show that the different hazard pairs have high combined risks of indices related to radiation, temperature, evapotranspiration, bioclimatic-based indices, such as the universal thermal climate index, wind chill index, and heat index, mainly over the northern and eastern European countries. Furthermore, we show that over the last 7 decades, agricultural and coastal areas are highly exposed to the risks of defined hotspots of compound events. In some of the hotspots of compound events-identified by clusters, there is no monthly shifts of hotspots, leading to higher impacts when compounded. We investigate the multidecadal variability of summer temperature over Romania as measured at 14 meteorological stations with long-term observational records. The dominant pattern of summer temperature variability has a monopolar structure and shows pronounced multidecadal variations. A correlation analysis reveals that these multidecadal variations are related with multidecadal variations in the frequency of four daily atmospheric circulation patterns from the North Atlantic region. It is found that on multidecadal time scales, negative summer mean temperature (TT) anomalies are associated with positive sea level pressure (SLP) anomalies centered over the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean and Scandinavia and negative SLP anomalies centered over the northern part of Africa. It is speculated that a possible cause of multidecadal fluctuations in the frequency of these four patterns are the sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies associated to the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). We present a new beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) tree-ring width composite chronology from five natural low-elevation forests in eastern Romania, which represent the species' continental distribution limit. Our regional beech chronology reflects April–June hydroclimate variability in form of the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index over large parts of Romania, Ukraine, and the Republic of Moldova, for which high-resolution paleoclimatic evidence is broadly missing. Most of the reconstructed hydroclimatic extremes back to 1768 CE are confirmed by documentary evidences, and a robust association is found with large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns in the Northern Hemisphere and sea surface temperatures over the North Atlantic. Reconstructed pluvials coincide with a high-pressure system over the North Atlantic Ocean and north-western Europe, and with a low-pressure system over south-western, central and eastern Europe, whereas historical droughts coincide with a high-pressure system over Europe and a low-pressure system over the central part of the Atlantic Ocean. Our study demonstrates the potential to produce well-replicated, multi-centennial beech chronologies for eastern Europe to reconstruct regional hydroclimate variation and better understand the causes and consequences of large-scale teleconnection patterns. Interannual-to-decadal variability of Rhine River streamflow and their relationship with large-scale climate anomaly patterns for spring [March-May (MAM)] and autumn [September-November (SON)] are investigated through a statistical analysis of observed streamflow data and global climate anomaly fields. A wavelet analysis reveals that spring streamflow variability is nonstationary with enhanced variability in the 8-16-yr band from 1860 to 1900 and in the 2-8 and 16-30 yr after 1960. A composite analysis reveals that streamflow anomalies during spring are related to a sea surface temperature (SST) pattern that resembles the corresponding El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) SST pattern. The corresponding atmospheric circulation pattern favors enhanced moisture advection over the Rhine catchment area during positive streamflow anomalies. During autumn, the streamflow variability follows a distribution similar to spring streamflow, but with a strong peak in the 30-60-yr band. Autumn streamflow anomalies are significantly related only with the North Atlantic SST anomalies. The atmospheric circulation pattern associated with high streamflow during autumn, which is more regional than the corresponding spring pattern, shows a deep low pressure system over the British Isles and the northwestern part of Europe and a shift southward of the Atlantic jet axis. The orientation of the axis of the Atlantic and African jets, as well as the advection of the moist air from the ocean, plays a crucial role in the variability of Rhine streamflow both in spring and autumn. The predictability of Elbe streamflow anomalies during spring is examined using previous winter sea surface temperature (SST), temperature over land (TT), and precipitation (PP) anomalies. Based on running correlation analysis, the authors identify several regions where the spring streamflow anomalies are stable correlated with SST, TT, and PP anomalies from the previous winter. During the period 1902–71 the Elbe spring streamflow is stable correlated with previous winter PP anomalies from its catchment area, with TT anomalies from the Black Sea–Caspian Sea region, northwestern Europe, and northern Canada as well as with SST anomalies from the tropical Pacific, the Indian Ocean, and several regions of the North Pacific and the North Atlantic. An index based on winter SST, TT, and PP anomalies from these regions is highly significantly correlated with spring streamflow anomalies during this period. Based on SST, TT, and PP anomalies from stable correlated regions, a forecast scheme is developed and applied to predict spring streamflow anomalies during the last decades. The prediction based on this statistical scheme represents a marked improvement relative to the forecast based on teleconnection indices that are traditionally used for streamflow prediction. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a tipping component of the climate system, with a quasi-global impact. Several numerical and observational studies emphasized two modes of AMOC variability, characterized by two distinct Atlantic sea surface temperature patterns. One is associated with centennial changes, the Trend Mode, and the other with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). The origin of the different manifestations of these modes it is not fully understood. Using observational data and an ocean general circulation model we present evidence that, whereas the Trend Mode is mainly linked with deep water formation in the Nordic Seas and with a North Atlantic AMOC cell centered at 50° N, AMO is related with deep water formation in the Labrador and Irminger Seas and with an overturning cell centered at 20° N. In combination with previous studies, these results imply that a main route of increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration influence on AMOC passes through deep water formation in the Nordic Seas and it is reflected in a subpolar North Atlantic meridional cell. The variability of stable oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) from Greenland ice cores is commonly linked to changes in local climate and associated teleconnection patterns. In this respect, in this study we investigate ice core δ18O variability from a synoptic scale perspective to assess the potential of such records as proxies for extreme climate variability and associated weather patterns. We show that positive (negative) δ18O anomalies in three southern and central Greenland ice cores are associated with relatively high (low) Rossby Wave Breaking (RWB) activity in the North Atlantic region. Both cyclonic and anticyclonic RWB patterns associated with high δ18O show filaments of strong moisture transport from the Atlantic Ocean towards Greenland. During such events, warm and wet conditions are recorded over southern, western and central part of Greenland. In the same time the cyclonic and anticyclonic RWB patterns show enhanced southward advection of cold polar air masses on their eastern side, leading to extreme cold conditions over Europe. The association between high δ18O winters in Greenland ice cores and extremely cold winters over Europe is partly explained by the modulation of the RWB frequency by the tropical Atlantic sea surface temperature forcing, as shown in recent modeling studies. We argue that δ18O from Greenland ice cores can be used as a proxy for RWB activity in the Atlantic European region and associated extreme weather and climate anomalies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global cloud cover represents a critical component of the climate system, with a considerable impact on the Earth's radiation budget. Small changes in clouds properties have a significant climatological impact because of the feedbacks that they generate, thus it is difficult to simulate the global cloud cover evolution in general circulation models. Observational investigations of cloud processes are constrained either by limited temporal and spatial extension of ground-based measurements or by imperfections in satellite data, like changes in geostationary satellite zenith angle, equatorial crossing time, or calibration. In this study, we used the Empirical Orthogonal Functions method to separate global patterns of total cloud cover variability in two satellite datasets from the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project and the Pathfinder Atmospheres-Extended projects, each corrected for specific errors, and in the ERA5 Reanalysis. The first two modes explain most of the variance from what could be considered “signal” in both satellite data. Through Canonical Correlation Analysis, they are associated in a physically consistent manner with two different types of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), namely the canonical ENSO which manifests itself in the eastern tropical Pacific and the El-Niño Modiki which manifest itself in the central Pacific. This work provides a comprehensive picture of the relationship between global total cloud cover and the tropical Pacific processes and indicates that cloud cover in the Indo-Pacific sector plays a significant role in the Earth radiative budget at interannual to decadal time scales. The similarity of the results across satellite and reanalysis data indicate that the both the observed and reanalysis cloud data sets contain consistent and valuable information related to global climate variability. In Europe, several extreme summer drought events have occurred the last two decades, with the 2018 Northern European drought as the most recent example. A better understanding of the combined characteristics and the large-scale atmospheric circulation driving such events is of high importance to enhance preparation and mitigation planning of drought. Initial analysis based on the E-OBS daily gridded observational datasets, showed record-breaking May and July temperature in large parts of northern Europe caused by blocking systems centred over Fennoscandia. Resulting high evapotranspiration combined with precipitation deficit caused dry conditions over large parts of northern Europe. The objective of this study is to investigate the hydrological aspect (streamflow and groundwater) of the 2018 drought, in a historical perspective, in the Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark). The analysis is based on high quality long records (at least 30 years) daily streamflow data for near-natural catchments in the Nordic countries. For groundwater, daily (or weekly) reference station data for Norway will be analysed. Further, the study will investigate potential co-occurrence of, and changes in, driving mechanisms of northern Europe drought events using gridded historical datasets (e.g. E-OBS and NCEP reanalysis data). This study will highlight the historical distinctiveness of the combined drivers and hydrological characteristics of the 2018 drought in the Nordic countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyse annually resolved tree‐ring stable carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) isotopic chronologies from Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra L.) in Romania. The chronologies cover the period between 1876 and 2012 and integrate data from four individual trees from the Calimani Mts in the eastern Carpathians where climatic records are scarce and starts only from 1961. Calibration trials show that the δ13C values correlate with local April–May relative humidity and with regional to larger scale (European) summer precipitation. δ18O correlates significantly with local relative humidity, cloud cover, maximum temperature, as well as European scale drought conditions. In all cases, the climate effects on δ13C values are weaker than those recorded in the δ18O data, with the latter revealing a tendency toward higher (lower) values of δ18O during extremely dry (wet) years. The most striking signal, however, is the strong link between the interannual δ18O variability recorded in the Calimani Mts and large‐scale circulation patterns associated with North Atlantic and Mediteraneean Sea sea surface temperatures. High (low) values of δ18O occur in association with a high (low) pressure system over the central and eastern part of Europe and with a significantly warmer (colder) Mediterranean Sea surface temperature. These results demonstrate the possibility of using tree ring oxygen isotopes from the eastern Carpathians to reconstruct regional drought conditions in eastern Europe on long‐term time scales and larger scale circulation dynamics over the preinstrumental periods. Due to its involvement in numerous feedbacks, sea ice plays a crucial role not only for polar climate but also at global scale. We analyse state-of-the-art observed, reconstructed, and modelled sea-ice concentration (SIC) together with sea surface temperature (SST) to disentangle the influence of different forcing factors on the variability of these coupled fields. Canonical Correlation Analysis provides distinct pairs of coupled Arctic SIC–Atlantic SST variability which are linked to prominent oceanic and atmospheric modes of variability over the period 1854–2017. The first pair captures the behaviour of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) while the third and can be associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) in a physically consistent manner. The dominant global SIC–Atlantic SST coupled mode highlights the contrast between the responses of Arctic and Antarctic sea ice to changes in AMOC over the 1959–2021 period. Model results indicate that coupled SST–SIC patterns can be associated with changes in ocean circulation. We conclude that a correct representation of AMOC-induced coupled SST–SIC variability in climate models is essential to understand the past, present and future sea-ice evolution. The article presents a case study of a 64-year old male patient with a mass in the distal bile duct. Topics discussed include his initial evaluation revealed mild cholestasis and common bile duct (CBD) dilatation by ultrasound; computed tomography of him showed a non-lithiasic, hypodense obstructive process of CBD for distal cholangiocarcinoma; and utility of a cholangioscopy with biopsies in the assessment and characterization of tumors in CBD.

The region situated between the mountain area and the lowlands in NE Romania (East-Central Europe) is experiencing increased competition for water resources triggered by a growing population, intensification of agriculture, and industrial development. To better understand hydrological cycling processes in the region, a study was conducted using stable isotopes of water and atmospheric trajectory data to characterize regional precipitation and vapour sources derived from the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean and Black Seas, as well as recycled continental moisture, and to assess and partition these contributions to recharge of surface and groundwater. Atmospheric moisture in the lowlands is found to be predominantly delivered along easterly trajectories, while mountainous areas appear to be dominated by North Atlantic Ocean sources, with moisture transported along mid-latitude, westerly storm tracks. Large-scale circulation patterns affect moisture delivery, the North Atlantic Oscillation being particularly influential in winter and the East Atlantic pattern in summer. Winter precipitation is the main contributor to river discharge and aquifer recharge. As winter precipitation amounts are projected to decrease over the next decades, and water abstraction is expected to steadily increase, a general reduction in water availability is projected for the region. The response of evapotranspiration to anthropogenic warming is of critical importance to the water and carbon cycle. Conflicting observations about changes of evapotranspiration stem mostly from the brevity of observations in time and space as well as a high degree of internal variability. Here we present the first gridded reconstruction of the European summer vapour pressure deficit (VPD) for the past four centuries. The gridded reconstruction is based on 26 European tree-ring oxygen isotope records and is performed using a Random Forest approach. Based on our reconstruction, we show that from the mid- 1700s a trend towards higher VPD occurred in Central Europe and the Mediterranean region which is based on the simultaneous increase in temperature and decrease in precipitation. This increasing VPD trend continues throughout the observational period and recent times. Climate model projections show this increase in VPD for the Mediterranean region continuing until the end of the 21st century, whereby the extent depends on the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. In contrast, projected VPD in North and Central Europe shows a tendency towards higher VPD only in the highest emission scenario. Preventing and controlling the spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria implicated in healthcare-associated infections is the greatest challenge of the health systems. In recent decades, research has shown the need for passive antibacterial protection of surfaces in order to reduce the microbial load and microbial biofilm development, frequently associated with transmission of infections. The aim of the present study is to analyze the efficiency of photocatalytic antimicrobial protection methods of surfaces using the new photocatalytic paint activated by light in the visible spectrum. The new composition is characterized by a wide range of analytical methods, such as UV-VIS spectroscopy, electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD) or X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic activity in the UV-A was compared with the one in the visible light spectrum using an internal method developed on the basis of DIN 52980: 2008-10 standard and ISO 10678—2010 standard. Migration of metal ions in the composition was tested based on SR EN1186-3: 2003 standard. The new photocatalytic antimicrobial method uses a type of photocatalytic paint that is active in the visible spectral range and generates reactive oxygen species with inhibitory effect against all tested microbial strains. Introduction: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are accompanied by an early and accelerated atherosclerotic process. Previous studies showed that Doppler ultrasonography and intima-media thickness (IMT) is a reliable marker for early atherosclerosis diagnosis. The aim of our study was to evaluate the presence of early atherosclerosis in a group of subjects with inflammatory bowel diseases, using Doppler ultrasonography and intima-media thickness (IMT) as a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis. Methods: A case-control study was conducted on 61 patients with inflammatory bowel disease and 19 healthy individuals. The included patients had an established IBD diagnosis, based on clinical, endoscopic, and histological criteria for at least 12 months. Results: In our study echo IMT was not significantly higher in IBD patients than in matched healthy controls. We found no difference between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis patients or between conventional or biologic treatment regarding the echo IMT. Severity of the disease and its duration were predictors of an increased IMT. We found that disease activity (measured by the endoscopic scores and CRP) correlates with higher values of echo IMT. Also the presence of anemia reached statistical significance and was correlated with increased echo IMT in the biologic treatment group. Conclusions: In our study we found an increased echo IMT in IBD patients versus control, but the values did not reach statistical significance. We found no difference between Crohn’s disease and UC, conventional or biologic treatment. Age and duration of disease were corelated with increased IMT. Disease that was not controlled (high endoscopic, clinical and biological markers of activity) was correlated with increased echo IMT. The limitations of our study are that in our patients therapy was started early in the course of the disease and that the majority of the patients were in remission when echography was made. Further studies are necessary to evaluate factors correlated with early atherosclerosis in IBD and how echo IMT can be used as a tool in the proactive evaluation of these patients. Glaciers worldwide are shrinking at an accelerated rate as the climate changes in response to anthropogenic influence. While increasing air temperature is the main factor behind glacier mass and volume loss, variable patterns of precipitation distribution also play a role, though these are not as well understood. Furthermore, while the response of surface glaciers (from large polar ice sheets to small alpine glaciers) to climatic changes is well documented and continuously monitored, little to nothing is known about how cave glaciers (perennial ice accumulations in rock-hosted caves) react to atmospheric warming. In this context, we present here the response of cave and surface glaciers in SE Europe to the extreme precipitation events occurring between May and July 2019 in SE Europe. Surface glaciers in the northern Balkan Peninsula lost between 17 % and 19 % of their total area, while cave glaciers in Croatia, Greece, Romania and Slovenia lost ice at levels higher than any recorded by instrumental observations during the past decades. The melting was likely the result of large amounts of warm water delivered directly to the surface of the glaciers, leading to rapid reduction in the area of surface glaciers and the thickness of cave glaciers. As climate models predict that such extreme precipitation events are set to increase in frequency and intensity, the presence of cave glaciers in SE Europe and the paleoclimatic information they host may be lost in the near future. Moreover, the same projected continuous warming and increase in precipitation extremes could pose an additional threat to the alpine glaciers in southern Europe, resulting in faster-than-predicted melting. Winter climate variations in midlatitude regions have far-reaching effects on both natural and human systems worldwide. However, most climate reconstructions focus on either annual or summer climate conditions. Here we present a stalagmite stable isotope record from Urşilor Cave (Romania) where the δ 18O values are controlled by winter temperature. Because of its East-Central Europe (ECE) location, the cave site is well suited to capture variations in precipitation and temperature in response to changes in the North Atlantic region. Present day precipitation and temperature in this region are controlled by two teleconnection patterns, the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and the East Atlantic (EA). By analyzing composite maps for four different scenarios of AO and EA phase, we suggest that between 5.6 and 5.2 ka the positive phases of AO and EA became increasingly dominant. This shift led to generally warmer winters in northern Europe, but drier conditions in southern Europe and the Levant. Recent evidence shows that wind‐driven ocean currents, like the western boundary currents, are strongly affected by global warming. However, due to insufficient observations both on temporal and spatial scales, the impact of climate change on large‐scale ocean gyres is still not clear. Here, based on satellite observations of sea surface height and sea surface temperature, we find a consistent poleward shift of the major ocean gyres. Due to strong natural variability, most of the observed ocean gyre shifts are not statistically significant, implying that natural variations may contribute to the observed trends. However, climate model simulations forced with increasing greenhouse gases suggest that the observed shift is most likely to be a response of global warming. The displacement of ocean gyres, which is coupled with the poleward shift of extratropical atmospheric circulation, has broad impacts on ocean heat transport, regional sea level rise, and coastal ocean circulation. Plain Language Summary: Ocean circulation plays a vital role in regulating the weather and climate and supporting marine life. Therefore, it is important to understand whether and how it responds to global warming. However, the available observations are currently sparse and short in duration, making it difficult to track the dynamic changes of large‐scale ocean circulation. Here, we show for the first time, independent satellite observational evidence demonstrating that the large‐scale ocean gyres are moving poleward during the past four decades. Further analysis based on climate models and various other data sets reveal that the poleward shifting of the ocean gyre circulation is most likely to be a consequence of global warming, which so far has not been well recognized by the public and the scientific community. Variations of the global sea level pressure (SLP) field reflect atmospheric and oceanic influences and have a profound influence on temperature, precipitation and the global carbon cycle. The impact of various forcing factors on this field was investigated mainly based on numerical simulations. Alternatively, here we identify and quantify the influences of various forcing factors on observational, reanalysis and simulated SLP fields. By applying canonical correlation analysis (CCA) on the aforementioned data sets, we separated and quantified the impact of increase CO2 concentration, El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), Arctic Oscillation (AO) and solar forcing on the global SLP field, based on their associations with known footprints on the sea surface temperature (SST). Together, their corresponding SLP spatial structures explain ~ 60% of the observed variance. Whereas the atmospheric CO2 concentration has the most prominent impact on the global SLP field, explaining 28% of variance, ENSO and AO account for 9% each. The solar forcing and AMO explain 7%, respectively 6% of global SLP variance. Similar spatial structures corresponding to the same forcing factors are identified based on the reanalysis SLP data. CCA applied on simulated SLP fields derived from six CMIP5 model simulations captures only the spatial structures of atmospheric CO2 concentration, ENSO, AAO and AO. Such a decomposition of the global pressure field based on a linear combination of coupled SST-SLP pairs provide a reference against which one could validate the performance of general circulation models in simulating the lower atmosphere dynamics. The aim of this study is to investigate the stable isotope composition of precipitation and river water from the northeastern part of Romania. For this study, we collected monthly samples (for variable periods of time) of precipitation from six stations, and river water from three stations, between March 2012 and December 2017. The precipitation in the area is sourced mainly from the Atlantic Ocean, and secondarily from the Black Sea, local recycling being important especially in summer. We found that the seasonal δ18O in precipitation is in agreement with the seasonal temperature variability, as shown by the significant correlation coefficient between the two variables (r = 0.77), which indicates that the temperature has an important role in the δ18O variability in precipitation water in this region. The local meteoric water line in the northeastern part of Romania is defined by the equation δ2H = 7.80 × δ18O + 7.47, (r2 = 0.99, n = 121). The results presented in this study emphasize that the δ18O (and δ2H) and d-excess variability are strongly influenced by temperature, precipitation and the prevailing large-scale atmospheric circulation. The Carpathian Mountains host several ice caves that preserve a large variety of geochemical information on past climate and environmental changes. In such caves, ice forms in winter by the freezing on infiltrating water, the later accumulating during the rainy season, between early summer and late autumn (depending on site-specific conditions). Here, we present the first reconstruction of summer temperature during the last 1000 years based on the d18O and d2H values measured in Focul Viu Ice Cave (Western Carpathian Mountains, Romania).Focul Viu (FV) is short (107 m long) descending cave, located at ca. 1165 m above sea level on the windward (western) side of the mountains. A stratified ice block, with a volume of ~25000 m3 and ~20 m thickness, occupies the floor of the cave. In May 2016 we have extracted a 4.86 m long ice core from the cave glacier and measured the stable isotope composition of ice in order to derive information on past climate variability. The chronology of the core is based on six 14C measurements on organic matter embedded in the ice. Monitoring of the stable isotope composition of precipitation in the vicinity of the cave shows that most of the summer precipitation is originating in the Atlantic Ocean, ca. 30 % percent of it being locally recycled during heavy summer storms.We have found a near-perfect correlation between d18O (and d2H) of the ice core and instrumental summer temperatures measurements at three local stations, located west, north and east of the cave's location and have used this correlation to reconstruct summer temperature variability during the past ~1100 years. Our results show little centennial-scale variability during this period, suggesting that summer temperatures were likely similar between the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and the Little Ice Age (LIA). In contrast, winter temperatures reconstructed from the nearby Scărișoara Ice Cave clearly show lower temperatures during the LIA, compared to the MWP, suggesting that the well-known temperature contrast between the two periods was a the result of winter climatic conditions. On a decadal scale, both during the MWP and the LIA, summer temperatures fluctuated with a periodicity of ~20/30 years, the minima and the maxima matching the fluctuations recorded by the Atlantic Ocean sea surface temperatures. Both the periodicity and the observed variability are similar to those of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, suggesting the d18O and d2H values in FV cave ice are recording climatic changes at hemispheric scale, thus being an important new proxy for both past temperatures and large-scale circulation changes. The variability of harsh winters is considered to be a sensitive indicator for climate change. As such, in this study we present a reconstruction of 2000 years of harsh winters in the Eastern Europe based on historical documents. In total, 360 harsh winters were extracted for the period from AD 0 to 2000, and it's the longest one, on record, over this area. Our investigations spans over five distinct periods: the Roman Warm Period (RWP), the Dark Age (DA), the Medieval Warm Period (MWP), the Little Ice Age (LIA) and the Modern Period (MD), respectively. The results obtained show that the number years of harsh winters has decreased considerably during the RWP (AD 0 – 550) and have an occurrence rate < 0.1/year. During the Dark Age is observed a small increase in the number of harsh winter and the occurrence rate is found to be > 0.15/year. The period which covers the MWP (AD 850 – 1250) shows very small variation in number of severe winters and a slight decline in occurrence rate (~ 0.05 to 0.08/year). Overall, the biggest changes have been observed during the LIA (AD 1400 – 1850), when the occurrence rate of harsh winters show an increasing trend of ~ 0.75/year, due to a decreasing in the winter mean temperature over the eastern part of Europe. During the MD (AD 1900 – 2000) the number of harsh winters is decreasing (0.4 – 0.3/year) due to an increasing the winter mean temperature. Based on these information we can reconstruct 2000 years of winter air temperature variability over the Eastern Europe, with warming winters during the RWP, cool during the Dark Age, warm and dry during the MWP, and very cold winters during the LIA. • We provide fundamentals of climate seasonality and break it down into external and internal forcing, and regional and local and modulating factors. • We present a transdisciplinary overview on how seasonality is recorded in, and extracted from, different palaeonvironmental archives. • We propose a framework for transparent communication of seasonality-related research across different communities. The role of seasonality is indisputable in climate and ecosystem dynamics. Seasonal temperature and precipitation variability are of vital importance for the availability of food, water, shelter, migration routes, and raw materials. Thus, understanding past climatic and environmental changes at seasonal scale is equally important for unearthing the history and for predicting the future of human societies under global warming scenarios. Alas, in palaeoenvironmental research, the term ' seasonality change ' is often used liberally without scrutiny or explanation as to which seasonal parameter has changed and how. Here we provide fundamentals of climate seasonality and break it down into external (insolation changes) and internal (atmospheric CO 2 concentration) forcing, and regional and local and modulating factors (continentality, altitude, large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns). Further, we present a brief overview of the archives with potentially annual/seasonal resolution (historical and instrumental records, marine invertebrate growth increments, stalagmites, tree rings, lake sediments, permafrost, cave ice, and ice cores) and discuss archive-specific challenges and opportunities, and how these limit or foster the use of specific archives in archaeological research. Next, we address the need for adequate data-quality checks, involving both archive-specific nature (e.g., limited sampling resolution or seasonal sampling bias) and analytical uncertainties. To this end, we present a broad spectrum of carefully selected statistical methods which can be applied to analyze annually- and seasonally-resolved time series. Falling between seasonal cycle variability and the impact of local drivers, the sea level in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden has been given less consideration, especially with large-scale modes. With multiple decades of satellite altimetry observations combined with good spatial resolution, the time has come for diagnosis of the impact of large-scale modes on the sea level in those important semi-enclosed basins. While the annual cycle of sea level appeared as a dominant cycle using spectral analysis, the semi-annual one was also found, although much weaker. The first empirical orthogonal function mode explained, on average, about 65% of the total variance throughout the seasons, while their principal components clearly captured the strong La Niña event (1999–2001) in all seasons. The sea level showed a strong positive relation with positive phase El Niño Southern Oscillation in all seasons and a strong negative relation with East Atlantic/West Russia during winter and spring over the study period (1993–2017). We show that the unusually stronger easterly winds that are displaced north of the equator generate an upwelling area near the Sumatra coast and they drive both warm surface and deep-water masses toward the West Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea, rising sea level over the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. This process could explain the increase of sea level in the basin during the positive phase of El Niño Southern Oscillation events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Clouds represent a critical component of the climate system, with a profound influence on the Earth's radiation budget through their associated feedbacks. Investigations of cloud processes are constrained by the limited temporal extension of measurements and by the imperfections of available data. Furthermore, global climate sensitivity is essentially linked to Pacific sea surface temperature and clouds variations. Here, we apply a variety of statistical methods on two corrected versions of observed total cloud cover datasets, the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project and the Pathfinder Atmospheres–Extended projects, in order to 1) identify dominant modes of total cloud cover variability, 2) identify and remove the anthropogenic footprint on total cloud cover, and 3) identify the impact of Eastern Pacific El Niño – Southern Oscillation, Central Pacific El Niño – Southern Oscillation and Pacific decadal sea surface temperature variability on total cloud cover.We find that the two flavors of El-Niño explain over 30 % of the global total cloud cover variability on interannual time scales. The associated total cloud cover footprints are found to be robust across the choice of dataset and statistical method. The positive correlation between sea surface temperature and total cloud cover in the Pacific basin indicate that convection plays a dominant role in mediating the influence of the associated sea surface anomalies on the total cloud cover field.The physical relevance of the identified total cloud cover footprints is supported by the consistency of the associated total precipitation rate, sea level pressure/wind patterns and indicates that the satellite cloud data contain valuable information related to Pacific climate variability. A number of emerging studies use stable oxygen and carbon isotopes from tree rings to reconstruct climate variables such as temperature and precipitation. In the mid latitudes, these key variables are essentially determined by the prevailing large scale atmospheric circulation which can be expressed via indices such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). However, only a few studies have investigated the relation between stable isotopes from trees and large-scale atmospheric circulation. Here we present ongoing research on the link between large scale atmospheric circulation and stable isotopes based on the European tree ring isotope network ISONET. This network contains stable oxygen and carbon isotope from 26 different sites in Europe over the last 400 years. In this study, empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) were used to extract the key patterns and the climate information in this dataset. We focus on the first two EOFs of carbon and oxygen stable isotopes. Finally we use correlation and composite analysis in combination with gridded climate datasets, such as climate reanalysis and reconstructions, to assess the large scale summer climate conditions during the last 400 years.Strong links are identified between the investigated stable isotopes and the leading EOF of North Atlantic–European summer mean sea level pressure with its corresponding climate extremes. The frequency of extremes shows an increase from the 17th to the 20th century which may be attributed to the footprint of the Maunder Minimum and the Little Ice Age. In addition to the identified summer signal, a significant relation between oxygen isotopes and winter NAO is found. We propose that this mechanism works via precipitation in winter which subsequently modulates the soil moisture and water storage at the beginning of the growth season. River flooding is among the most destructive of natural hazards globally, causing widespread loss of life, damage to infrastructure and economic deprivation. Societies are currently under increasing threat from such floods, predominantly from increasing exposure of people and assets in flood‐prone areas, but also as a result of changes in flood magnitude, frequency, and timing. Accurate flood hazard and risk assessment are therefore crucial for the sustainable development of societies worldwide. With a paucity of hydrological measurements, evidence from the field offers the only insight into truly extreme events and their variability in space and time. Historical, botanical, and geological archives have increasingly been recognized as valuable sources of extreme flood event information. These different archives are here reviewed with a particular focus on the recording mechanisms of flood information, the historical development of the methodological approaches and the type of information that those archives can provide. These studies provide a wealthy dataset of hundreds of historical and palaeoflood series, whose analysis reveals a noticeable dominance of records in Europe. After describing the diversity of flood information provided by this dataset, we identify how these records have improved and could further improve flood hazard assessments and, thereby, flood management and mitigation plans.
