- Abstract
This study explores the three-dimensional structure of Roman glass through the combined use of laboratory and phase-contrast synchrotron x-ray micro–computed tomography. This original approach validates a noninvasive analytical procedure designed to enhance the understanding of glass degradation mechanisms, crucial for the preservation of historical artefacts. The high-resolution images obtained reveal the intricate internal structure and morphology of various forms of glass deterioration, including cracking, pitting, and the formation of multilayered iridescent patinas. The research provides compelling evidence of corrosion processes and interaction mechanisms with burial soil, shedding light on the chemical and physical interactions that occur over centuries. By characterizing and examining the long-term alteration of ancient glass, this work contributes to the field of archaeometry, offering insights into how different types of glass withstand the test of time in diverse environmental conditions. The findings have important implications for conservation strategies, enabling better preservation techniques for glass artefacts.

We use the theory of complex networks in order to quantitatively characterize the formation of communities in a particular financial market. The system is composed by different banks exchanging on a daily basis loans and debts of liquidity. Through topological analysis and by means of a model of network growth we can determine the formation of different group of banks characterized by different business strategy. The model based on Pareto's Law makes no use of growth or preferential attachment and it reproduces correctly all the various statistical properties of the system. We believe that this network modeling of the market could be an efficient way to evaluate the impact of different policies in the market of liquidity., Comment: 5 pages 5 figures

We study the dynamics of the SK model modified by a small non-hamiltonian perturbation. We study aging, and we find that on the time scales investigated by our numerical simulations it survives a small perturbation (and is destroyed by a large one). If we assume we are observing a transient behavior the scaling of correlation times versus the asymmetry strength is not compatible with the one expected for the spherical model. We discuss the slow power law decay of observable quantities to equilibrium, and we show that for small perturbations power like decay is preserved. A disorder-dependent Gaussian variational approach is applied to the $d$-dimensional ferromagnetic XY model in a random field. The randomness yields a non extensive contribution to the variational free energy, implying a random mass term in correlation functions. The Imry-Ma low temperature result, concerning the existence ($d>4$) or absence ($d < 4$) of long-range order is obtained in a transparent way. The physical picture which emerges below $d=4$ is that of a marginally stable mixture of domains. A performance-based research funding system (PRFS) is a nationwide incentive scheme that promotes and rewards university research performance through competition for government funding. The UK’s PRFS, currently the Research Excellence Framework (REF), is considered the oldest, largest and most developed payment-by-results system in academia worldwide. Surprisingly, and despite the strong criticisms, little has been done to quantitatively and casually evaluate the intended and unintended effects of the PRFSs. In this paper, we evaluate the incremental impact of the REF 2014 in the fields of Economics and Business. We use a synthetic control method to compare the performance of UK universities with their artificial counterfactual units constructed using data from US universities. Our analysis shows, on the whole, that the introduction of the REF had a significant and positive impact on the quantity and quality of the scientific research produced at UK universities. However, we do not find a significant effect on the per author measures, suggesting that the REF did not result in an increase in research productivity. We also show that the effects are more heterogeneous across universities than across academic disciplines. We do not find evidence of a shift of research focus from Economics to Business topics, as some feared. But our analysis indicates that the REF 2014 may have contributed to the concentration of research excellence in elite institutions.

9. Macroprudential capital buffers in heterogeneous banking networks: insights from an ABM with liquidity crises

- Abstract
We study how the effectiveness of macroprudential capital buffers conditional to the systemic-risk assessment of banks responds to the degree of heterogeneity of the financial system. A multi-agent model is employed to build an artificial economy with households, firms, and banks where occasional liquidity crises emerge. The systemic importance of banks is captured by a score-based mechanism reflecting banks' characteristics in terms of size or interconnectedness. We compare three degrees of heterogeneity in the configuration of financial networks related to different banking concentrations in the loan market. The main findings suggest that: (i) reducing the heterogeneity of the banking network stabilizes the economy by itself; (ii) the identification criteria of systemic-important institutions are affected by the heterogeneity of networks; it is preferable applying systemic capital surcharges to the largest banks under high heterogeneity and targeting those most interconnected under low heterogeneity; (iii) the effectiveness of systemic capital buffers is preserved under high heterogeneity when a common asset holding contagion channel is added. However, simple measures based on risk-weighted assets capital ratios appear to be more effective in low heterogeneous systems. Thus, we argue that prudential regulation should account for the characteristics of the banking networks and tune macroprudential tools accordingly.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Radical surgery is the mainstream treatment for patients presenting with advanced primary or recurrent gastrointestinal cancers; however, the rate of postoperative complications is exceptionally high. The current evidence suggests that improving patients' fitness during the preoperative period may enhance postoperative recovery. Thus, the primary aim of this study is to establish the effectiveness of prehabilitation with a progressive, individualised, preoperative exercise and education program compared to usual care alone in reducing the proportion of patients with postoperative in-hospital complications. The secondary aims are to investigate the effectiveness of the preoperative intervention on reducing the length of intensive care unit and hospital stay, improving quality of life and morbidity, and reducing costs. METHODS: This is a multi-centre, assessor-blinded, pragmatic, comparative, randomised controlled trial. A total of 172 patients undergoing pelvic exenteration, cytoreductive surgery, oesophagectomy, hepatectomy, gastrectomy or pancreatectomy will be recruited. Participants will be randomly allocated to prehabilitation with a preoperative exercise and education program (intervention group), delivered over 4 to 8 weeks before surgery by community physiotherapists/exercise physiologists, or usual care alone (control group). The intervention will comprise 12 to 24 individualised, progressive exercise sessions (including aerobic/anaerobic, resistance, and respiratory exercises), recommendations of home exercises (16 to 32 sessions), and daily incidental physical activity advice. Outcome measures will be collected at baseline, the week prior to surgery, during the hospital stay, and on the day of discharge from hospital, and 1 month and 1 months postoperatively. The Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Application in the Middle East (SESAME) facility is in the process of designing, procuring, and installing a new beamline for tomography (BEATS). The BEATS experimental hutch, hosting sample and detectors, will be located 43 m away from the undulator in the synchrotron ring. Noise in the form of vibration originating from different sources transferred to the detector stage can be a source of poor image quality thus it is important that the detector stage is analysed for its vibration transmission properties. In this study, the result of a three-dimensional random vibration analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for the detector stage is presented which leads to an estimate of the severity of the vibrations. The random vibration source is that of the ground which was measured exactly where the detector stage will be mounted. The random vibration analysis is conducted in two stages; the modal frequencies of the structure are calculated, thereafter, the random vibration analysis is conducted and the response power spectrum density (PSD) of the structure is calculated along with the root mean square (RMS) displacement values. Since the beamline BEATS is under installation, an existing structure installed at beamline ID28 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) was used to validate the model. The model used on the ID28 structure deviated from the experimental results on modal analysis by 2% - 4% on random vibration analysis. This suggested that the model is valid. The analysis as applied to the BEATS detector stage design predicts that the RMS displacement values are less than the pixel size of the detector which is 1 µm. 13. Centralized vs Decentralized Markets in the Laboratory: The Role of Connectivity

This paper compares the performance of centralized and decentralized markets experimentally. We constrain trading exchanges to happen on an exogenously predetermined network, representing the trading relationships in markets with differing levels of connectivity. Our experimental results show that, despite having lower trading volumes, decentralized markets are generally not less efficient. Although information can propagate quicker through highly connected markets, we show that higher connectivity also induces informed traders to trade faster and exploit further their information advantages before the information becomes fully incorporated into prices. This not only reduces market efficiency, but it increases wealth inequality. We show that, in more connected markets, informed traders trade not only relatively quicker, but also more, in the right direction, despite not doing it at better prices.

We propose a multi-agent approach to compare the effectiveness of macro-prudential capital requirements, where banks are embedded in an artificial macroeconomy. Capital requirements are derived from systemic- risk metrics that reflect both the vulnerability or impact of financial in- stitutions. Our objective is to explore how systemic-risk measures could be translated in capital requirements and test them in a comprehensive framework. Based on our counterfactual scenarios, we find that macro- prudential capital requirements can mitigate systemic risk, but there is a trade-off between market- and balance-sheet-based policies in terms of banks’ losses and credit supply.

This paper presents a predictive analytics toolkit, which is based on the emerging spatiotemporal data analysis techniques, for the estimation of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) gas distribution and prediction of sewer concrete corrosion level. The toolkit is an easy-to-use desktop application with a user-friendly interface for querying and producing output results on GIS. The inputs to the toolkit are the sewer network geometry, monitored factors, and hydraulic information; the outputs of the toolkit are spatiotemporal estimates of H2S gas concentration and concrete corrosion levels on the entire sewer network with uncertainties of the predictions. The toolkit is also able to integrate experts’ domain knowledge or existing physical model’s results as prior knowledge into the analytics model. The final outcomes of the toolkit can be used to prioritise high risk areas, recommend chemical dosing locations, and suggest deployment of sensors. A simulation of H2S and corrosion level prediction on a subsystem of the sewer network in the greater Sydney area is reported to demonstrate the capability of the toolkit

© 2018, The Author(s). Sewerage systems are paramount underground infrastructure assets for any nation. In most cities, they are old and have been exposed to significant microbial induced corrosion. It is a serious global problem as they pose threats to public health and economic repercussions to water utilities. For managing sewer assets efficaciously, it is vital to predict the rate of corrosion. Predictive models of sewer corrosion incorporate concrete surface temperature measurements as an observation. However, currently, it has not been fully utilized due to unavailability of a proven sensor. This study reports the feasibility of infrared radiometer for measuring the surface temperature dynamics in the aggressive sewer conditions. The infrared sensor was comprehensively evaluated in the laboratory at different environmental conditions. Then, the sensor suite was deployed in a Sydney based sewer for three months to perform continuous measurements of surface temperature variations. The field study revealed the suitability of the developed sensor suite for non-contact surface temperature measurements in hostile sewer conditions. Further, the accuracy of the sensor measurements was improved by calibrating the sensor with emissivity coefficient of the sewer concrete. Overall, this study will ameliorate the present sewer corrosion monitoring capabilities by providing new data to models predicting sewer corrosion.

20. Network Centrality and Funding Rates in the e-MID Interbank Market

This paper empirically investigates the role of banks' network centrality in the interbank market on their funding rates. Specifically we analyze transaction data from the e-MID market, the only electronic interbank market in the Euro Area and US, over the period 2006-2009 that encompasses the global financial crisis. We show that interbank spreads are significantly affected by both local and global measures of connectedness. The effects of network centrality increased as the financial crisis evolved. Local measures show that having more links increases borrowing costs for borrowers and reduces premia for lenders. For global network centrality, borrowers receive a significant discount if they increase their intermediation activity and become more central, while lenders pay in general a premium (i.e. receive lower rates) for centrality. This provides evidence of the `too-interconnected-to-fail' hypothesis.

21. Quantifying preferential trading in the e-MID interbank market

Interbank markets allow credit institutions to exchange capital for purposes of liquidity management. These markets are among the most liquid markets in the financial system. However, liquidity of interbank markets dropped during the 2007-2008 financial crisis, and such a lack of liquidity influenced the entire economic system. In this paper, we analyze transaction data from the e-MID market which is the only electronic interbank market in the Euro Area and US, over a period of eleven years (1999-2009). We adapt a method developed to detect statistically validated links in a network, in order to reveal preferential trading in a directed network. Preferential trading between banks is detected by comparing empirically observed trading relationships with a null hypothesis that assumes random trading among banks doing a heterogeneous number of transactions. Preferential trading patterns are revealed at time windows of 3-maintenance periods. We show that preferential trading is observed throughout the whole period of analysis and that the number of preferential trading links does not show any significant trend in time, in spite of a decreasing trend in the number of pairs of banks making transactions. We observe that preferential trading connections typically involve large trading volumes. During the crisis, we also observe that transactions occurring between banks with a preferential connection occur at larger interest rates than the complement set - an effect that is not observed before the crisis.

A search for a narrow Higgs boson resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented based on data corresponding to 10fb -1 of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF experiment from proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.96TeV. To increase the sensitivity of the search, we employ a multivariate discriminant technique for the first time in this channel at CDF. No evidence of signal is observed, and upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio of the resonant state as a function of the Higgs boson mass. The limits are interpreted in the context of the standard model with an expected (observed) limit on the cross section times branching ratio of 9.9 (17.0) times the standard model prediction at the 95% credibility level for a Higgs boson mass of 125GeV/c 2. Moreover, a Higgs boson with suppressed couplings to fermions is excluded for masses below 114GeV/c 2 at the 95% credibility level. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

This paper analyzes the distribution of lending and borrowing credit spreads in the European interbank market conditional on main features of banks such as their size, operating currency and nationality. This is done by means of nonparametric kernel estimation methods for the cross-sectional density of interbank funding rates over a large sample of European banks trading in the e-MID market. The analysis is repeated over consecutive non-overlapping periods in order to assess and compare the effect of the factors during crisis and non-crisis periods. We find evidence of important differences between the borrowing and lending segment of the interbank market that are augmented during crises periods. Our results strongly support the existence of a size effect in the borrowing market. Largest banks enjoy the highest lending rates and the lowest borrowing rates. The collapse of Lehman Brothers accentuates the differences in funding conditions. In both borrowing and lending segments, crises are corresponded by high volatilities in daily funding costs. Banks using the Euro currency and in countries not affected by sovereign debt crises are benefited by lower funding costs. Our nonparametric analysis of densities conditional on banks' nationality suggests that distress in the interbank market can serve as an early warning indicator of sovereign risk.

We present an empirical analysis of the European electronic interbank market of overnight lending (e-MID) during the years 1999–2009. The main goal of the paper is to explain the observed changes of the cross-sectional dispersion of lending/borrowing conditions before, during and after the 2007–2008 subprime crisis. Unlike previous contributions, that focused on banks’ dependent and macro information as explanatory variables, we address the role of banks’ behaviour and market microstructure as determinants of the credit spreads.

We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase βs using the time evolution of Bs0→J/ψ(→μ+μ-)ϕ(→K+K-) decays in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of βs and the Bs0 decay-width difference ΔΓs and measure βs∈[-π/2,-1.51]∪[-0.06,0.30]∪[1.26,π/2] at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard model expectation. We present an empirical analysis of the European electronic interbank market of overnight lending (e-MID) during the years 1999–2009. The main goal of the paper is to explain the observed changes of the cross-sectional dispersion of lending/borrowing conditions before, during and after the 2007–2008 subprime crisis. Unlike previous contributions, that focused on banks’ dependent and macro information as explanatory variables, we address the role of banks’ behaviour and market microstructure as determinants of the credit spreads.

We introduce an order driver market model with heterogeneous traders that imitate each other on a dynamic network structure. The communication structure evolves endogenously via a fitness mechanism based on agents performance. We assess under which assumptions imitation, among otherway noise traders, can give rise to the emergence of gurus and their rise and fall in popularity over time. We study the wealth distribution of gurus, followers and non followers and show that traders have an incentive to imitate and to be imitated since herding turns out to be profitable.

This paper compares the so-called gross and net architectures for securities settlement. It studies the settlement risk arising from exogenous operational delays and compares the importance of settlement failures under the two architectures, as a function of the length of the settlement cycle and of different market conditions. Under both architectures, settlement failures are non-monotonically related to the length of settlement cycle. There is no evidence that continuous time settlement provides always higher stability. Gross systems appear to be more stable than net systems.

In this paper we develop a model of an order-driven market where traders set bids and asks and post market or limit orders according to exogenously fixed rules. Agents are assumed to have three components to the expectation of future asset returns, namely-fundamentalist, chartist and noise trader. Furthermore agents differ in the characteristics describing these components, such as time horizon, risk aversion and the weights given to the various components. The model developed here extends a great deal of earlier literature in that the order submissions of agents are determined by utility maximisation, rather than the mechanical unit order size that is commonly assumed. In this way the order flow is better related to the ongoing evolution of the market. For the given market structure we analyze the impact of the three components of the trading strategies on the statistical properties of prices and order flows and observe that it is the chartist strategy that is mainly responsible of the fat tails and clustering in the artificial price data generated by the model. The paper provides further evidence that large price changes are likely to be generated by the presence of large gaps in the book.

Streptococcus mutans form oral biofilms (BFs) and cause dental caries. Roasted green tea (RGT) is prepared by roasting the tea plant, and RGT-specific polyphenols are produced during the roasting process. Catechins, polyphenols in green tea, have BF inhibitory activity against S. mutans; therefore, RGT-specific polyphenols are also expected to have this activity. However, there are few reports on the structural and functional properties of RGT. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory activity of RGT against S. mutans BF formation and to investigate the active compounds. RGT extract fractionation and BF inhibitory assay were performed. Strong activity was confirmed in the RGT fractions that had medium-high hydrophobicity, were rich in phenolic hydroxyl groups, and lacked catechins. A peak comprising compounds with molecular weights of 918 (mw918) and 1050 (mw1050) was purified from the fraction. Since BF inhibitory activity was confirmed for this peak, these compounds were considered to be part of the active ingredients. The mw918 polyphenol was detected only in RGT and it was thought to be produced during the roasting process. The results of this research will serve as a basis for the future application of RGT as a safe and effective anti-caries agent.
