Search

We apply multi-algorithm machine learning models to TESS 2-minute survey data from Sectors 1-72 to identify stellar flares. Models trained with Deep Neural Network, Random Forest, and XGBoost algorithms, respectively, utilized four flare light curve characteristics as input features. Model performance is evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics, all exceeding 94%. Validation against previously reported TESS M dwarf flare identifications showed that our models successfully recovered over 92% of the flares while detecting $\sim2,000$ more small events, thus extending the detection sensitivity of previous work. After processing 1.3 million light curves, our models identified nearly 18,000 flare stars and 250,000 flares. We present an extensive catalog documenting both flare and stellar properties. We find strong correlations in total flare energy and flare amplitude with color, in agreement with previous studies. Flare frequency distributions are analyzed, refining power-law slopes for flare behavior with the frequency uncertainties due to the detection incompleteness of low-amplitude events. We determine rotation periods for $\sim120,000$ stars thus yielding the relationship between rotation period and flare activity. We find that the transition in rotation period between the saturated and unsaturated regimes in flare energy coincides with the same transition in rotation period separating the saturated and unsaturated levels in coronal X-ray emission. We find that X-ray emission increases more rapidly with flare luminosity in earlier-type and unsaturated stars, indicating more efficient coronal heating in these objects. Uranus and Saturn share similarities in terms of their atmospheric composition, which is primarily made up of hydrogen and helium, as well as their ring systems. Uranus has 13 known rings, which are divided into narrow main rings, dusty rings, and outer rings. Unlike Saturn's broad ring system, Uranus' inner narrow main rings are relatively narrow, and likely consist of dark, radiation-processed organics that range from centimeters to meters in size. We assume that Uranus may have a mechanism similar to Saturn where tiny particles fall on-to the planet due to its gravity and the dragging force of the upper atmosphere. The uncharged nano-dust particles in Uranus' inner narrow rings will collide with neutral gas molecules in the exosphere and fall onto the planet. This work derives a Monte Carlo simulation of the orbital behavior of nano-dust particles in the inner narrow rings of Uranus. The model shows that the braking of the dust grain motion takes place at altitudes between 6000 km and 8000 km, and the dust particles are gradually captured into corotation with the planetary atmosphere below 4000 km altitude. The larger the dust particles are, the lower the altitude at which they will be assimilated into co-rotation. The lifetime of 1-nm dust particles to 1000 km-altitudes is estimated to be about 32.5 $\pm$ 18.8 hours, and that of 30 nm is about 2770.0 $\pm$ 213.9 hours., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted to PSS

We present the analysis of 16 classical T Taur stars using LAMOST and TESS data, investigating spectral properties, photometric variations, and mass-accretion rates. All 16 stars exhibit emissions in H$\alpha$ lines, from which the average mass-accretion rate of $1.76\times10^{-9}~M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ is derived. Two of the stars, DL Tau and Haro 6-13, show mass-accretion bursts simultaneously in TESS, ASAS-SN, and/or ZTF survey. Based on these observations, we find that the mass-accretion rates of DL Tau and Haro 6-13 reach their maximums of $2.5 \times 10^{-8}~M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ and $2 \times 10^{-10}~M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ during the TESS observation, respectively. We detect thirteen flares among these stars. The flare frequency distribution shows that the CTTSs' flare activity is not only dominated by strong flares with high energy but much more active than those of solar-type and young low-mass stars. By comparing the variability classes reported in the literature, we find that the transition timescale between different classes of variability in CTTSs, such as from Stochastic (S) to Bursting (B) or from quasi-periodic symmetric (QPS) to quasi-periodic dipping (QPD), may range from 1.6 to 4 years. We observe no significant correlation between inclination and mass-accretion rates derived from the emission indicators. This suggests that inner disk properties may be more important than that of outer disk. Finally, we find a relatively significant positive correlation between the asymmetric metric "M" and the cold disk inclination compared to the literature. Earth-sized exoplanets that transit nearby, late spectral type red dwarfs will be prime targets for atmospheric characterization in the coming decade. Such systems, however, are difficult to find via wide-field transit surveys like Kepler or TESS. Consequently, the presence of such transiting planets is unexplored and the occurrence rates of short-period Earth-sized planets around late M dwarfs remain poorly constrained. Here, we present the deepest photometric monitoring campaign of 22 nearby late M dwarf stars, using data from over 500 nights on seven 1-2 meter class telescopes. Our survey includes all known single quiescent northern late M dwarfs within 15 pc. We use transit-injection-and-recovery tests to quantify the completeness of our survey, successfully identify most ($>80\%$) transiting short-period (0.5-1 d) super-Earths ($R > 1.9 R_\oplus$), and are sensitive ($\sim50\%$) to transiting Earth-sized planets ($1.0-1.2 R_\oplus$). Our high sensitivity to transits with a near-zero false positive rate demonstrates an efficient survey strategy. Our survey does not yield a transiting planet detection, yet it provides the most sensitive upper limits on transiting planets orbiting our target stars. Finally, we explore multiple hypotheses about the occurrence rates of short-period planets (from Earth-sized planets to giant planets) around late M dwarfs. We show, for example, that giant planets at short periods ($<1$ day) are uncommon around our target stars. Our dataset provides some insight into occurrence rates of short-period planets around TRAPPIST-1-like stars, and our results can help test planetary formation and system evolution models, as well as guide future observations of nearby late M dwarfs., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures

Asteroids having perihelion distance $q$ $<$ 1.3 AU are classified as near-Earth objects (NEOs), which are divided into different sub-groups: Vatira-class, Atira-class, Aten-class, Apollo-class, and Amor-class. 2020 $AV_2$, the first Vatira (Orbiting totally inside Venus' orbit) was discovered by the Twilight project of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) on January 4, 2020. Upon the discovery of 2020 $AV_2$, a couple of orbital studies of the short-term orbital evolution of 2020 $AV_2$ have been performed and published (e.g. de la Fuente Marcos & de la Fuente Marcos 2020; Greenstreet 2020). In this present work, we performed an assessment of the long-term orbital evolution of known near-Earth objects and known Atiras under the Yarkovsky effect by using the \textit{Mercury6} N-body code. We considered not only planetary gravitational perturbation but also the non-gravitational Yarkovsky effect. Our calculation shows that the NEOs have generally two dynamical populations, one short-lived and the other long-lived. From our calculation, the transfer probabilities of Atira-class asteroids to Vatira-class asteroids for the first transition are $\sim$13.1 $\pm$ 0.400, $\sim$13.05 $\pm$ 0.005, and $\sim$ 13.25 $\pm$ 0.450 $\%$ for different values of the Yarkovsky force (i.e. obliquity of 0, 90, and 180 deg.), respectively. It suggests that the radiation force may play some role in the long-term evolution of this asteroid population. The long-standing co-orbital asteroids have been thought to be the possible source of zodiacal dust ring around the orbit of Venus, but inconsistent conclusions on the orbital stability thus existence of Venus Trojans are found in literature. We present in this paper a systematic survey of the orbital stability of Venus Trojans, taking into account the dynamical influences from the general relativity and the Yarkovsky effect. The orbits of thousands of fictitious Venus Trojans are numerically simulated. Using the method of frequency analysis, their orbital stabilities and the dynamical mechanisms behind are described in detail. The influences of general relativity and of Yarkovsky effect, which were either neglected or oversimplified previously, are investigated by long-term numerical simulations. The stability maps on the $(a_0,i_0)$ plane and $(a_0,e_0)$ plane are depicted, and the most stable Venus Trojans are found to occupy the low-inclination horseshoe orbits with low eccentricities. The resonances that carve the fine structures in the stability map are determined. The general relativity decreases the stability of orbits by little but the Yarkovsky effect may drive nearly all Venus Trojans out of the Trojan region in a relatively short time. The Venus Trojans have poor orbital stability and cannot survive the age of the Solar system. The zodiacal dust ring found around the orbit of Venus is more likely a sporadic phenomenon, as the result of temporarily capture into the 1:1 mean motion resonance of dust particles produced probably from passing comets or asteroids, but not Venus Trojans., Comment: To appear in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 10 pages, 9 figures

Europa has been spotted to have water outgassing activities by the space and ground-based telescopes as well as reanalysis of the Galileo data (Roth et al. 2014; Sparks et al. 2016, 2017; Paganini et al. 2020; Jia et al. 2018; Arnold et al. 2019). However, these observations only provided limited information about plume dynamics, which is critical in understanding the eruption mechanism and preparation of future exploration. We adopt a 3D DSMC model to investigate the plume characteristics of Europa assuming supersonic expansion originated from the undersurface vent. The main goal is to understand the physical processes and structures of Europa water vapor plumes, which can play a key role on probing its undersurface vent condition and outgassing mechanism. With a parametric study of the total gas production rate and initial gas bulk velocity, the gas number density, temperature and velocity information of the outgassing plumes from the various case studies are derived. Our results show that the plume gases experience acceleration through mutual collisions and adiabatic cooling when exiting and expanding from the surface. The central part of the plume with the relatively large gas production rates (of 1029 and 1030 H2O s-1) is found to sustain thermal equilibrium and nearly continuum condition. Column density maps integrated along two different viewing angles are presented to demonstrate the importance of the projection effect on remote sensing diagnostics. This work proposes a thermophysical model for realistic surface layers on airless small bodies (RSTPM), for the use of interpreting their multi-epoch thermal lightcurves (e.g WISE/NEOWISE). RSTPM considers real orbital cycle, rotation cycle, rough surface, temperature dependent thermal parameters, as well as contributions of sunlight reflection to observations, hence being able to produce precise temperature distribution and thermal emission of airless small bodies regarding the variations in orbital time scales. Details of the physics, mathematics and numerical algorithms of RSTPM are presented. When used to interpret multi-epoch thermal lightcurves by WISE/NEOWISE, RSTPM can give constraints on the spin orientation and surface physical properties, like mean thermal inertia or mean size of dust grains, roughness fraction, albedo and so on via radiometric procedure. As an application example, we apply this model to the main-belt object (24) Themis, the largest object of the Themis family, which is believed to be the source region of many main-belt comets. We find multi-epoch (2010, 2014-2018) observations of Themis by WISE/NEOWISE, yielding 18 thermal lightcurves. By fitting these data with RSTPM, best-fit spin orientation of Themis is derived to be ($\lambda=137^\circ$, $\beta=59^\circ$) in ecliptic coordinates, the mean radius of dust grains on the surface is estimated to be $\tilde{b}=140^{+500}_{-114}(6\sim640)~\mu$m, indicating the surface thermal inertia to vary from $\sim3\rm~Jm^{-2}s^{-0.5}K^{-1}$ to $\sim60\rm~Jm^{-2}s^{-0.5}K^{-1}$ due to seasonal temperature variation. Further analysis found that thermal light curves of Themis show a weak rotation-phase dependent feature, indicative of heterogeneous thermal properties or imperfections of lightcurve inversion shape model., Comment: 23 pages, 22 figures, ApJ in press

We observed Episodically Active Asteroid (6478) Gault in 2020 with multiple telescopes in Asia and North America and have found that it is no longer active after its recent outbursts at the end of 2018 and start of 2019. The inactivity during this apparation allowed us to measure the absolute magnitude of Gault of H_r = 14.63 +/- 0.02, G_r = 0.21 +/- 0.02 from our secular phasecurve observations. In addition, we were able to constrain Gault's rotation period using time-series photometric lightcurves taken over 17 hours on multiple days in 2020 August, September and October. The photometric lightcurves have a repeating $\lesssim$0.05 magnitude feature suggesting that (6478) Gault has a rotation period of ~2.5 hours and may have a semi-spherical or top-like shape, much like Near-Earth Asteroids Ryugu and Bennu. The rotation period of ~2.5 hours is near to the expected critical rotation period for an asteroid with the physical properties of (6478) Gault suggesting that its activity observed over multiple epochs is due to surface mass shedding from its fast rotation spun up by the Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack effect., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures; Accepted by ApJ Letters

HO Puppis (HO Pup) was considered as a Be-star candidate based on its gamma-Cassiopeiae-type light curve, but lacked spectroscopic confirmation. Using distance measured from Gaia Data Release 2 and the spectral-energy-distribution (SED) fit on broadband photometry, the Be-star nature of HO Pup is ruled out. Furthermore, based on the 28,700 photometric data points collected from various time-domain surveys and dedicated intensive-monitoring observations, the light curves of HO Pup closely resemble IW And-type stars (as pointed out in Kimura et al. 2020a), exhibiting characteristics such as quasi-standstill phase, brightening, and dips. The light curve of HO Pup displays various variability timescales, including brightening cycles ranging from 23 to 61 days, variations with periods between 3.9 days and 50 minutes during the quasi-standstill phase, and a semi-regular ~14-day period for the dip events. We have also collected time-series spectra (with various spectral resolutions), in which Balmer emission lines and other expected spectral lines for an IW And-type star were detected (even though some of these lines were also expected to be present for Be stars). We detect Bowen fluorescence near the brightening phase, and that can be used to discriminate between IW And-type stars and Be stars. Finally, despite only observing for four nights, the polarization variation was detected, indicating that HO Pup has significant intrinsic polarization., Comment: 24 pages, 7 tables and 12 figures; ApJ accepted

Parker Solar Probe (PSP) aims at exploring the nascent solar wind close to the Sun. Meanwhile, PSP is also expected to encounter small objects like comets and asteroids. In this work, we survey the ephemerides to find a chance of recent encounter, and then model the interaction between released dusty plasmas and solar wind plasmas. On 2019 September 2, a comet-like object 322P/SOHO just passed its perihelion flying to a heliocentric distance of 0.12 au, and swept by PSP at a relative distance as close as 0.025 au. We present the dynamics of dust particles released from 322P, forming a curved dust tail. Along the PSP path in the simulated inner heliosphere, the states of plasma and magnetic field are sampled and illustrated, with the magnetic field sequences from simulation results being compared directly with the in-situ measurements from PSP. Through comparison, we suggest that 322P might be at a deficient activity level releasing limited dusty plasmas during its way to becoming a "rock comet". We also present images of solar wind streamers as recorded by WISPR, showing an indication of dust bombardment for the images superposed with messy trails. We observe from LASCO coronagraph that 322P was transiting from a dimming region to a relatively bright streamer during its perihelion passage, and simulate to confirm that 322P was flying from relatively faster to slower solar wind streams, modifying local plasma states of the streams.

We present visible and mid-infrared imagery and photometry of temporary Jovian co-orbital comet P/2019 LD$_2$ taken with HST/WFC3, Spitzer/IRAC, the GROWTH telescope network, visible spectroscopy from Keck/LRIS and archival ZTF observations taken between 2019 April and 2020 August. Our observations indicate that the nucleus of LD$_2$ has a radius between 0.2-1.8 km assuming a 0.08 albedo and a coma dominated by $\sim$100$\mu$ m-scale dust ejected at $\sim$1 m/s speeds with a $\sim$1'' jet pointing in the SW direction. LD$_2$ experienced a total dust mass loss of $\sim$10$^8$ kg at a loss rate of $\sim$6 kg/s with Af$\rho$/cross-section varying between $\sim$85 cm/125 km$^2$ and $\sim$200 cm/310 km$^2$ from 2019 April 9 to 2019 Nov 8. If the increase in Af$\rho$/cross-section remained constant, it implies LD$_2$'s activity began $\sim$2018 November when within 4.8 au of the Sun, implying the onset of H$_2$O sublimation. We measure CO/CO$_2$ gas production of $\lesssim$10$^{27}$ mol/s /$\lesssim$10$^{26}$ mol/s from our 4.5 $\mu$m Spitzer observations, $g$-$r$ = 0.59$\pm$0.03, $r$-$i$ = 0.18$\pm$0.05, $i$-$z$ = 0.01$\pm$0.07 from GROWTH observations, H$_2$O gas production of $\lesssim$80 kg/s scaling from our estimated $C_2$ production of $Q_{C_2}\lesssim$7.5$\times10^{24}$ mol/s from Keck/LRIS spectroscopy. We determine that the long-term orbit of LD$_2$ is similar to Jupiter family comets having close encounters with Jupiter within $\sim$0.5 Hill radius in the last $\sim$3 y, within 0.8 Hill radius in $\sim$9 y. Additionally, 78.8$\%$ of our orbital clones are ejected from the Solar System within $1 \times 10^{6}$ years having a dynamical half-life of 3.4 $\times 10^5$ years., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, 2 Tables, accepted for publication in AJ

We present time-resolved visible spectrophotometry of minimoon 2020 CD$_3$, the second asteroid known to become temporarily captured by the Earth-Moon system's gravitational field. The spectrophotometry was taken with Keck I/LRIS between wavelengths 434 nm and 912 nm in $B$, $g$, $V$, $R$, $I$ and RG850 filters as it was leaving the Earth-Moon system on 2020 March 23 UTC. The spectrophotometry of 2020 CD$_3$ most closely resembles the spectra of V-type asteroids and some Lunar rock samples with a reddish slope of ~18$\%$/100 nm between 434 nm and 761 nm corresponding to colors of $g$-$r$ = 0.62$\pm$0.08, $r$-$i$ = 0.21 $\pm$ 0.06 and an absorption band at ~900 nm corresponding to $i$-$z$ = -0.54$\pm$0.10. Combining our measured 31.9$\pm$0.1 absolute magnitude with an albedo of 0.35 typical for V-type asteroids, we determine 2020 CD$_3$'s diameter to be ~0.9$\pm$0.1 m making it the first minimoon and one of the smallest asteroids to be spectrally studied. We use our time-series photometry to detect periodic lightcurve variations with a $<$10$^{-4}$ false alarm probability corresponding to a lightcurve period of ~573 s and a lightcurve amplitude of ~1 mag implying 2020 CD$_3$ possesses a $b/a$ axial ratio of ~2.5. In addition, we extend the observational arc of 2020 CD$_3$ to 37 days between 2020 February 15 UTC and 2020 March 23 UTC. From the improved orbital solution for 2020 CD$_3$, we estimate its likely duration of its capture to be ~2 y, and we measure the non-gravitation perturbation on its orbit due to radiation pressure with an area-to-mass ratio of 6.9$\pm$2.4$\times$10$^{-4}$ m$^2$/kg implying a density of 2.3$\pm$0.8 g/cm$^3$, broadly compatible with the densities of other meter-scale asteroids and Lunar rock. We searched for pre-discovery detections of 2020 CD$_3$ in the ZTF archive as far back as 2018 October, but were unable to locate any positive detections., Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures, 3 Tables, accepted for publication in ApJL

We present a systematic search for optical counterparts to 13 gravitational wave (GW) triggers involving at least one neutron star during LIGO/Virgo's third observing run. We searched binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron star black hole (NSBH) merger localizations with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and undertook follow-up with the Global Relay of Observatories Watching Transients Happen (GROWTH) collaboration. The GW triggers had a median localization of 4480 deg^2, median distance of 267 Mpc and false alarm rates ranging from 1.5 to 1e-25 per yr. The ZTF coverage had a median enclosed probability of 39%, median depth of 20.8mag, and median response time of 1.5 hr. The O3 follow-up by the GROWTH team comprised 340 UVOIR photometric points, 64 OIR spectra, and 3 radio. We find no promising kilonova (radioactivity-powered counterpart) and we convert the upper limits to constrain the underlying kilonova luminosity function. Assuming that all kilonovae are at least as luminous as GW170817 at discovery (-16.1mag), we calculate our joint probability of detecting zero kilonovae is only 4.2%. If we assume that all kilonovae are brighter than -16.6mag (extrapolated peak magnitude of GW170817) and fade at 1 mag/day (similar to GW170817), the joint probability of zero detections is 7%. If we separate the NSBH and BNS populations, the joint probability of zero detections, assuming all kilonovae are brighter than -16.6mag, is 9.7% for NSBH and 7.9% for BNS mergers. Moreover, <57% (<89%) of putative kilonovae could be brighter than -16.6mag assuming flat (fading) evolution, at 90% confidence. If we further account for the online terrestrial probability for each GW trigger, we find that <68% of putative kilonovae could be brighter than -16.6mag. Comparing to model grids, we find that some kilonovae must have Mej < 0.03 Msun or Xlan>1e-4 or phi>30deg to be consistent with our limits. (Abridged), Comment: Submitted to ApJ

The minor planets on orbits that are dynamically stable in Neptune's 1:1 resonance on Gyr timescales were likely emplaced by Neptune's outward migration. We explore the intrinsic libration amplitude, eccentricity, and inclination distribution of Neptune's stable Trojans, using the detections and survey efficiency of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS) and Pan-STARRS1. We find that the libration amplitude of the stable Neptunian Trojan population can be well modeled as a Rayleigh distribution with a libration amplitude width $\sigma_{A_phi}$ of 15$^\circ$. When taken as a whole, the Neptune Trojan population can be acceptably modeled with a Rayleigh eccentricity distribution of width $\sigma_e$ of 0.045 and a typical sin(i) x Gaussian inclination distribution with a width $\sigma_i$ of 14 +/- 2 degrees. However, these distributions are only marginally acceptable. This is likely because, even after accounting for survey detection biases, the known large Hr < 8 and small Hr >= 8 Neptune Trojans appear to have markedly different eccentricities and inclinations. We propose that like the classical Kuiper belt, the stable intrinsic Neptunian Trojan population have dynamically `hot' and dynamically `cold' components to its eccentricity/inclination distribution, with $\sigma_{e-cold}$ ~ 0.02 / $\sigma_{i-cold}$ ~ 6$^\circ$ and $\sigma_{e-hot}$~ 0.05 / $\sigma_{i-hot}$ ~ 18$^\circ$. In this scenario, the `cold' L4 Neptunian Trojan population lacks the Hr >= 8 members and has 13 +11/-6 `cold' Trojans with Hr < 8. On the other hand, the `hot' L4 Neptunian Trojan population has 136 +57/-48 Trojans with Hr < 10 -- a population 2.4 times greater than that of the L4 Jovian Trojans in the same luminosity range., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, v3, accepted for publication in Icarus

Many asteroids in the main belt are continuously pushed by Yarkovsky effect into regions of different mean motion resonances (MMRs) and then ejected out. They are considered as the principal source of near-Earth objects. We investigate in this paper the effects of the 7/3 MMR with Jupiter (J7/3 MMR) on the transportation of asteroids from Koronis and Eos families that reside respectively on the inner and outer side of the resonance. The fraction of asteroids that make successful crossing through the resonance and the escaping rate from the resonance are found to depend on the Yarkovsky drifting rate, the initial inclination and the migrating direction. The excitation of eccentricity and inclination due to the combined influence from both the resonance and Yarkovsky effect is discussed. Only the eccentricity can be pumped up considerably, and it is attributed mainly to the resonance. In the observational data, family members are also found in the resonance and on the opposite side of the resonance with respect to the corresponding family centre. The existence of these family members is explained using our results of numerical simulations. Based on a linearized model of the Yarkovsky effect, we investigate in this paper the dependence of the semimajor axis drift $\Delta a$ of a celestial body on its size, spinning obliquity, initial orbit and thermal parameters on its surface. With appropriate simplification and approximation, we obtain the analytical solutions to the perturbation equations for the motion of asteroids influenced by the Yarkovsky effect, and they are then verified by numerical simulations of the full equations of motion. These solutions present explicitly the dependencies of $\Delta a$ on the thermal and dynamical parameters of the asteroid. With these analytical formulae for $\Delta a$, we investigate the combined seasonal and diurnal Yarkovsky effects. The critical points where the migration direction reverses are calculated and the consequent selective effects according to the size and rotation state of asteroids are discussed. %Solely the Yarkovsky effect is found to be able to produce some ring structure in the aged circumstellar debris disk. Finally, we apply the analytical formulae to calculate the migration of Eos family members. The space distribution of asteroids is well reproduced. 133P/Elst-Pizarro is the firstly recognized main-belt comet, but we still know little about its nucleus. Firstly we use mid-infrared data of Spitzer-MIPS, Spitzer-IRS and WISE to estimate its effective diameter $D_{\rm eff}=3.9^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ km, geometric albedo $p_{\rm v}=0.074\pm0.013$ and mean Bond albedo $A_{\rm eff,B}=0.024\pm0.004$. The albedo is used to compute 133P's temperature distribution, which shows significant seasonal variation, especially polar regions, ranging from $\sim40$ to $\sim200$ K. Based on current activity observations, the maximum water gas production rate is estimated to be $\sim1.4\times10^{23}\rm~s^{-1}$, being far weaker than $\sim10^{26}\rm~s^{-1}$ of JFC 67P at similar helio-centric distance $\sim2.7$ AU, indicating a thick dust mantle on the surface to lower down the gas production rate. The diameter of the sublimation area may be $<\sim200$ m according to our model prediction. We thus propose that 133P's activity is more likely to be caused by sublimation of regional near-surface ice patch rather than homogeneous buried ice layer. Such small near-surface ice patch might be exposed by one impact event, before which 133P may be an extinct comet (or ice-rich asteroid) with ice layer buried below $\sim$40 m depth. The proposed ice patch may be located somewhere within latitude $-50\sim50^\circ$ by comparing theoretical variation of sublimation temperature to the constraints from observations. Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) that orbit the Sun on or within Earth's orbit are tricky to detect for Earth-based observers due to their proximity to the Sun in the sky. These small bodies hold clues to the dynamical history of the inner solar system as well as the physical evolution of planetesimals in extreme environments. Populations in this region include the Atira and Vatira asteroids, as well as Venus and Earth co-orbital asteroids. Here we present a twilight search for these small bodies, conducted using the 1.2-m Oschin Schmidt and the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) camera at Palomar Observatory. The ZTF twilight survey operates at solar elongations down to $35^\circ$ with limiting magnitude of $r=19.5$. During a total of 40 evening sessions and 62 morning sessions conducted between 2018 November 15 and 2019 June 23, we detected 6 Atiras, including 2 new discoveries 2019 AQ$_3$ and 2019 LF$_6$, but no Vatiras or Earth/Venus co-orbital asteroids. NEO population models show that these new discoveries are likely only the tip of the iceberg, with the bulk of the population yet to be found. The population models also suggest that we have only detected 5--$7\%$ of the $H<20$ Atira population over the 7-month survey. Co-orbital asteroids are smaller in diameters and require deeper surveys. The intra-night trajectories of asteroids can be approximated by straight lines, and so are their intra-night detections. Therefore, the Hough transform, a line detecting algorithm, can be used to connect the line-up detections to find asteroids. We applied this algorithm to a high-cadence Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) observation, which was originally designed to collect asteroid light curves for rotation period measurements (Chang et al., 2019). The algorithm recovered most of the known asteroids in the observing fields and, moreover, discovered 3574 new asteroids with magnitude mainly of 21.5 < w_p1 < 22.5 mag. This magnitude range is equivalent to sub-kilometer main-belt asteroids (MBAs), which usually lack of rotation period measurements due to their faintness. Using the light curves of the 3574 new asteroids, we obtained 122 reliable rotation periods, of which 13 are super-fast rotators (SRFs; i.e., rotation period of < 2 hr). The required cohesion to survive these SFRs range from tens to thousands of Pa, a value consistent with the known SFRs and the regolith on the Moon and Mars. The goal of Project GAUSS is to return samples from the dwarf planet Ceres. Ceres is the most accessible ocean world candidate and the largest reservoir of water in the inner solar system. It shows active cryovolcanism and hydrothermal activities in recent history that resulted in minerals not found in any other planets to date except for Earth's upper crust. The possible occurrence of recent subsurface ocean on Ceres and the complex geochemistry suggest possible past habitability and even the potential for ongoing habitability. Aiming to answer a broad spectrum of questions about the origin and evolution of Ceres and its potential habitability, GAUSS will return samples from this possible ocean world for the first time. The project will address the following top-level scientific questions: 1) What is the origin of Ceres and the origin and transfer of water and other volatiles in the inner solar system? 2) What are the physical properties and internal structure of Ceres? What do they tell us about the evolutionary and aqueous alteration history of icy dwarf planets? 3) What are the astrobiological implications of Ceres? Was it habitable in the past and is it still today? 4) What are the mineralogical connections between Ceres and our current collections of primitive meteorites? GAUSS will first perform a high-resolution global remote sensing investigation, characterizing the geophysical and geochemical properties of Ceres. Candidate sampling sites will then be identified, and observation campaigns will be run for an in-depth assessment of the candidate sites. We describe ZStreak, a semi-real-time pipeline specialized in detecting small, fast-moving near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) that is currently operating on the data from the newly-commissioned Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey. Based on a prototype originally developed by Waszczak et al. (2017) for the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF), the predecessor of ZTF, ZStreak features an improved machine-learning model that can cope with the $10\times$ data rate increment between PTF and ZTF. Since its first discovery on 2018 February 5 (2018 CL), ZTF/ZStreak has discovered $45$ confirmed new NEAs over a total of 232 observable nights until 2018 December 31. Most of the discoveries are small NEAs, with diameters less than $\sim100$ m. By analyzing the discovery circumstances, we find that objects having the first to last detection time interval under 2 hr are at risk of being lost. The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) is a new optical time-domain survey that uses the Palomar 48-inch Schmidt telescope. A custom-built wide-field camera provides a 47 deg$^2$ field of view and 8 second readout time, yielding more than an order of magnitude improvement in survey speed relative to its predecessor survey, the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). We describe the design and implementation of the camera and observing system. The ZTF data system at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center provides near-real-time reduction to identify moving and varying objects. We outline the analysis pipelines, data products, and associated archive. Finally, we present on-sky performance analysis and first scientific results from commissioning and the early survey. The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), a public-private enterprise, is a new time domain survey employing a dedicated camera on the Palomar 48-inch Schmidt telescope with a 47 deg$^2$ field of view and 8 second readout time. It is well positioned in the development of time domain astronomy, offering operations at 10% of the scale and style of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) with a single 1-m class survey telescope. The public surveys will cover the observable northern sky every three nights in g and r filters and the visible Galactic plane every night in g and r. Alerts generated by these surveys are sent in real time to brokers. A consortium of universities which provided funding ("partnership") are undertaking several boutique surveys. The combination of these surveys producing one million alerts per night allows for exploration of transient and variable astrophysical phenomena brighter than r $\sim$ 20.5 on timescales of minutes to years. A class of asteroids, called large super-fast rotators (large SFRs), have rotation periods shorter than 2 hours and diameters larger than ~ 0.3 km. They pose challenges to the usual interior rubble-pile structure unless a relatively high bulk density is assumed. So far, only six large SFRs have been found. Therefore, we present a survey of asteroid rotation period using Pan-STARRS 1 telescopes during 2016 October 26 to 31 to search more large SFRs and study their properties. A total of 876 reliable rotation periods are measured, among which seven are large SFRs, thereby increasing the inventory of known large SFRs. These seven newly discovered large SFRs have diverse colors and locations in the main asteroid belt, suggesting that the taxonomic tendency and the location preference in the inner main belt of the six perviously known large SFRs could be a bias due to various observational limits. Interestingly, five out of the seven newly discovered large SFRs are mid main-belt asteroids. Considering the rare discovery rates of large SFR in the previously similar surveys (Chang et al., 2015, 2016) and the survey condition in this work, the chance of detecting a large SFR in the inner main belt seems to be relatively low. This probably suggests that the inner main belt harbors less large SFRs than the mid main belt. From our survey, we also found the drop in number appearing at f > 5 rev/day on the spin-rate distribution for the outer main-belt asteroids of D < 3 km, which was reported for the inner and mid main belt by (Chang et al., 2015, 2016)., Comment: Accepted by ApJS on Jan 24, 2019

The bulk composition of the Earth is dramatically carbon poor compared to that of the interstellar medium, and this phenomenon extends to the asteroid belt. To interpret this carbon deficit problem, the carbonaceous component in grains must have been converted into the gas-phase in the inner regions of protoplanetary disks prior to planetary formation. We examine the effect of carbon grain destruction on the chemical structure of disks by calculating the molecular abundances and distributions using a comprehensive chemical reaction network. When carbon grains are destroyed and the elemental abundance of the gas becomes carbon-rich, the abundances of carbon-bearing molecules, such as HCN and carbon-chain molecules, increase dramatically near the midplane, while oxygen-bearing molecules, such as H$_2$O and CO$_2$, are depleted. We compare the results of these model calculations with the solid carbon fraction in the solar system. Although we find a carbon depletion gradient, there are some quantitative discrepancies: the model shows a higher value at the position of asteroid belt and a lower value at the location of the Earth. In addition, using the obtained molecular abundances distributions, coupled with line radiative transfer calculations, we make predictions for ALMA to potentially observe the effect of carbon grain destruction in nearby protoplanetary disks. A long-term sublimation model to explain how Phaethon could provide the Geminid stream is proposed. We find that it would take $\sim6$ Myr or more for Phaethon to lose all of its internal ice (if ever there was) in its present orbit. Thus, if the asteroid moved from the region of a 5:2 or 8:3 mean motion resonance with Jupiter to its present orbit less than $1$ Myr ago, it may have retained much of its primordial ice. The dust mantle on the sublimating body should have a thickness of at least $15$ m but the mantle could have been less than $1$ m thick $1000$ years ago. We find that the total gas production rate could have been as large as $10^{27}\rm~s^{-1}$ then, and the gas flow could have been capable of lifting dust particles of up to a few centimeters in size. Therefore, gas production during the past millennium could have been sufficient to blow away enough dust particles to explain the entire Geminid stream. For present-day Phaethon, the gas production is comparatively weak. But strong transient gas release with a rate of $\sim4.5\times10^{19}\rm~m^{-2}s^{-1}$ is expected for its south polar region when Phaethon moves from $0^\circ$ to $2^\circ$ mean anomaly near perihelion. Consequently, dust particles with radii of $<\sim260~\mu m$ can be blown away to form a dust tail. In addition, we find that the large surface temperature variation of $>600$ K near perihelion can generate sufficiently large thermal stress to cause fracture of rocks or boulders and provide an efficient mechanism to produce dust particles on the surface. The Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS), a wide-field imaging program in 2013-2017 with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, surveyed 155 deg$^{2}$ of sky to depths of $m_r = 24.1$-25.2. We present 838 outer Solar System discoveries that are entirely free of ephemeris bias. This increases the inventory of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) with accurately known orbits by nearly 50%. Each minor planet has 20-60 Gaia/Pan-STARRS-calibrated astrometric measurements made over 2-5 oppositions, which allows accurate classification of their orbits within the trans-Neptunian dynamical populations. The populations orbiting in mean-motion resonance with Neptune are key to understanding Neptune's early migration. Our 313 resonant TNOs, including 132 plutinos, triple the available characterized sample and include new occupancy of distant resonances out to semi-major axis $a \sim 130$ au. OSSOS doubles the known population of the non-resonant Kuiper belt, providing 436 TNOs in this region, all with exceptionally high-quality orbits of $a$ uncertainty $\sigma_{a} \leq 0.1\%$; they show the belt exists from $a \gtrsim 37$ au, with a lower perihelion bound of $35$ au. We confirm the presence of a concentrated low-inclination $a\simeq 44$ au "kernel" population and a dynamically cold population extending beyond the 2:1 resonance. We finely quantify the survey's observational biases. Our survey simulator provides a straightforward way to impose these biases on models of the trans-Neptunian orbit distributions, allowing statistical comparison to the discoveries. (349) Dembowska, a large, bright main-belt asteroid, has a fast rotation and oblique spin axis. It may have experienced partial melting and differentiation. We constrain Dembowska's thermophysical properties, e.g., thermal inertia, roughness fraction, geometric albedo and effective diameter within 3$\sigma$ uncertainty of $\Gamma=20^{+12}_{-7}\rm~Jm^{-2}s^{-0.5}K^{-1}$, $f_{\rm r}=0.25^{+0.60}_{-0.25}$, $p_{\rm v}=0.309^{+0.026}_{-0.038}$, and $D_{\rm eff}=155.8^{+7.5}_{-6.2}\rm~km$, by utilizing the Advanced Thermophysical Model (ATPM) to analyse four sets of thermal infrared data obtained by IRAS, AKARI, WISE and Subaru/COMICS at different epochs. In addition, by modeling the thermal lightcurve observed by WISE, we obtain the rotational phases of each dataset. These rotationally resolved data do not reveal significant variations of thermal inertia and roughness across the surface, indicating the surface of Dembowska should be covered by a dusty regolith layer with few rocks or boulders. Besides, the low thermal inertia of Dembowska show no significant difference with other asteroids larger than 100 km, indicating the dynamical lives of these large asteroids are long enough to make the surface to have sufficiently low thermal inertia. Furthermore, based on the derived surface thermophysical properties, as well as the known orbital and rotational parameters, we can simulate Dembowska's surface and subsurface temperature throughout its orbital period. The surface temperature varies from $\sim40$ K to $\sim220$ K, showing significant seasonal variation, whereas the subsurface temperature achieves equilibrium temperature about $120\sim160$ K below $30\sim50$ cm depth., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures, accepted to MNRAS

(144977) 2005 EC127 is an V-/A-type inner-main-belt asteroid with a diameter of 0.6 +- 0.1 km. Asteroids of this size are believed to have rubble-pile structure, and, therefore, cannot have a rotation period shorter than 2.2 hours. However, our measurements show that asteroid 2005 EC127 completes one rotation in 1.65 +- 0.01 hours with a peak-to-peak light-curve variation of ~0.5 mag. Therefore, this asteroid is identified as a large super-fast rotator. Either a rubble-pile asteroid with a bulk density of ~6 g cm^-3 or an asteroid with an internal cohesion of 47 +- 30 Pa can explain 2005 EC127. However, the scenario of high bulk density is very unlikely for asteroids. To date, only six large super-fast rotators, including 2005 EC127, have been reported, and this number is very small when compared with the much more numerous fast rotators. Machine learning techniques are widely applied in many modern optical sky surveys, e.q. Pan-STARRS1, PTF/iPTF and Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam survey, to reduce human intervention for data verification. In this study, we have established a machine learning based real-bogus system to reject the false detections in the Subaru/Hyper-Suprime-Cam StrategicSurvey Program (HSC-SSP) source catalog. Therefore the HSC-SSP moving object detection pipeline can operate more effectively due to the reduction of false positives. To train the real-bogus system, we use the stationary sources as the real training set and the "flagged" data as the bogus set. The training set contains 47 features, most of which are photometric measurements and shape moments generated from the HSC image reduction pipeline (hscPipe). Our system can reach a true positive rate (tpr) ~96% with a false positive rate (fpr) ~ 1% or tpr ~99% at fpr ~5%. In this work, we investigate the surface thermophysical properties (thermal emissivity, thermal inertia, roughness fraction and geometric albedo) of asteroid (99942) Apophis, using the currently available thermal infrared observations of CanariCam on Gran Telescopio CANARIAS and far-infrared data by PACS of Herschel, on the basis of the Advanced thermophysical model. We show that the thermal emissivity of Apophis should be wavelength dependent from $8.70~\mu m$ to $160~\mu m$, and the maximum emissivity may arise around $20~\mu m$ similar to that of Vesta. Moreover, we further derive the thermal inertia, roughness fraction, geometric albedo and effective diameter of Apophis within a possible 1$\sigma$ scale of $\Gamma=100^{+100}_{-52}\rm~Jm^{-2}s^{-0.5}K^{-1}$, $f_{\rm r}=0.78\sim1.0$, $p_{\rm v}=0.286^{+0.030}_{-0.026}$, $D_{\rm eff}=378^{+19}_{-25}\rm~m$, and 3$\sigma$ scale of $\Gamma=100^{+240}_{-100}\rm~Jm^{-2}s^{-0.5}K^{-1}$, $f_{\rm r}=0.2\sim1.0$, $p_{\rm v}=0.286^{+0.039}_{-0.029}$, $D_{\rm eff}=378^{+27}_{-29}\rm~m$. The derived low thermal inertia but high roughness fraction may imply that Apophis could have regolith on its surface, and less regolith migration process has happened in comparison with asteroid Itokawa. The wide-field synoptic sky surveys, known as the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) and the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF), will accumulate a large number of known and new RR Lyrae. These RR Lyrae are good tracers to study the substructure of the Galactic halo if their distance, metallicity, and galactocentric velocity can be measured. Candidates of halo RR Lyrae can be identified from their distance and metallicity before requesting spectroscopic observations for confirmation. This is because both quantities can be obtained via their photometric light curves, because the absolute V-band magnitude for RR Lyrae is correlated with metallicity, and the metallicity can be estimated using a metallicity-light curve relation. To fully utilize the PTF and iPTF light-curve data in related future work, it is necessary to derive the metallicity-light curve relation in the native PTF/iPTF R-band photometric system. In this work, we derived such a relation using the known ab-type RR Lyrae located in the Kepler field, and it is found to be $[Fe/H]_{PTF} = -4.089 - 7.346 P + 1.280 \phi_{31}$ (where $P$ is pulsational period and $\phi_{31}$ is one of the Fourier parameters describing the shape of the light curve), with a dispersion of 0.118 dex. We tested our metallicity-light curve relation with new spectroscopic observations of a few RR Lyrae in the Kepler field, as well as several data sets available in the literature. In this work we report the detection of seven Neptune Trojans (NTs) in the Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) survey. Five of these are new discoveries, consisting of four L4 Trojans and one L5 Trojan. Our orbital simulations show that the L5 Trojan stably librates for only several million years. This suggests that the L5 Trojan must be of recent capture origin. On the other hand, all four new L4 Trojans stably occupy the 1:1 resonance with Neptune for more than 1 Gyr. They can, therefore, be of primordial origin. Our survey simulation results show that the inclination width of the Neptune Trojan population should be between $7^{\circ}$ and $27^{\circ}$ at $>$ 95% confidence, and most likely $\sim 11^{\circ}$. In order to look for large super-fast rotators, five dedicated surveys covering ~ 188 square degree in the ecliptic plane have been carried out in R-band with ~10 min cadence using the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory in late 2014 and early 2015. Among 1029 reliable rotation periods obtained from the surveys, we discovered one new large super-fast rotator, (40511) 1999 RE88, and other 18 candidates. (40511) 1999 RE88 is an S-type inner main-belt asteroid with a diameter of D = 1.9 +- 0.3 km, which has a rotation period of P = 1.96 +- 0.01 hr and a lightcurve amplitude of ~0.1 mag. To maintain such fast rotation, an internal cohesive strength of ~780 Pa is required. Combining all known large super-fast rotators, their cohesive strengths all fall in the range of 100 to 1000 Pa of lunar regolith. However, the number of large super-fast rotators seems to be far less than the whole asteroid population. This might indicate a peculiar asteroid group for them. Although the detection efficiency for a long rotation period is greatly reduced due to our two-day observation time span, the spin-rate distributions of this work show consistent results with Chang et al. (2015) after considering the possible observational bias in our surveys. It shows a number decrease with increase of spin rate for asteroids with diameter of 3 < D < 15 km, and a number drop at spin-rate of f = 5 rev/day for asteroids with D < 3 km., Comment: Accepted by ApJS in Aug 2016. 33 pages (not include the full tables and figures). Although the majority of Centaurs are thought to have originated in the scattered disk, with the high-inclination members coming from the Oort cloud, the origin of the high inclination component of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) remains uncertain. We report the discovery of a retrograde TNO, which we nickname "Niku", detected by the Pan-STARRS 1 Outer Solar System Survey. Our numerical integrations show that the orbital dynamics of Niku are very similar to that of 2008 KV$_{42}$ (Drac), with a half-life of $\sim 500$ Myr. Comparing similar high inclination TNOs and Centaurs ($q > 10$ AU, $a < 100$ AU and $i > 60^\circ$), we find that these objects exhibit a surprising clustering of ascending node, and occupy a common orbital plane. This orbital configuration has high statistical significance: 3.8-$\sigma$. An unknown mechanism is required to explain the observed clustering. We report the discovery and orbit of a new dwarf planet candidate, 2015 RR$_{245}$, by the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS). 2015 RR$_{245}$'s orbit is eccentric ($e=0.586$), with a semi-major axis near 82 au, yielding a perihelion distance of 34 au. 2015 RR$_{245}$ has $g-r = 0.59 \pm 0.11$ and absolute magnitude $H_{r} = 3.6 \pm 0.1$; for an assumed albedo of $p_V = 12$% the object has a diameter of $\sim670$ km. Based on astrometric measurements from OSSOS and Pan-STARRS1, we find that 2015 RR$_{245}$ is securely trapped on ten-Myr timescales in the 9:2 mean-motion resonance with Neptune. It is the first TNO identified in this resonance. On hundred-Myr timescales, particles in 2015 RR$_{245}$-like orbits depart and sometimes return to the resonance, indicating that 2015 RR$_{245}$ likely forms part of the long-lived metastable population of distant TNOs that drift between resonance sticking and actively scattering via gravitational encounters with Neptune. The discovery of a 9:2 TNO stresses the role of resonances in the long-term evolution of objects in the scattering disk, and reinforces the view that distant resonances are heavily populated in the current Solar System. We report the detection of orbital modulation, a model solution, and X-ray properties of a newly discovered contact binary, 2MASS J11201034$-$2201340. We serendipitously found this X-ray point source outside the error ellipse when searching for possible X-ray counterparts of $\gamma$-ray millisecond pulsars among the unidentified objects detected by the {\it Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope}. The optical counterpart of the X-ray source (unrelated to the $\gamma$-ray source) was then identified using archival databases. The long-term CRTS survey detected a precise signal with a period of $P=0.28876208(56)$ days. A follow-up observation made by the SLT telescope of Lulin Observatory revealed the binary nature of the object. Utilizing archived photometric data of multi-band surveys, we construct the spectral energy distribution, which is well fitted by a K2V spectral template. The fitting result of the orbital profile using the Wilson--Devinney code suggests that 2MASS J11201034-2201340 is a short-period A-type contact binary and the more massive component has a cool spot. The X-ray emission was first noted in observations made by \swift\, then further confirmed and characterized by an \xmm\ observation. The X-ray spectrum can be described by a power law or thermal Bremsstrahlung. Unfortunately, we could not observe significant X-ray orbital modulation. Finally, according to the spectral energy distribution, this system is estimated to be 690 pc from Earth with a calculated X-ray intensity of $(0.7-1.5)\times 10^{30}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which is in the expected range of an X-ray emitting contact binary., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

We report the discovery of 2 new Be stars, and re-identify one known Be star in the open cluster NGC 6830. Eleven H-alpha emitters were discovered using the H-alpha imaging photometry of the Palomar Transient Factory Survey. Stellar membership of the candidates was verified with photometric and kinematic information using 2MASS data and proper motions. The spectroscopic confirmation was carried out by using the Shane 3-m telescope at Lick observatory. Based on their spectral types, three H-alpha emitters were confirmed as Be stars with H-alpha equivalent widths > -10 Angstrom. Two objects were also observed by the new spectrograph SED-Machine on the Palomar 60 inch Telescope. The SED-Machine results show strong H-alpha emission lines, which are consistent with the results of the Lick observations. The high efficiency of the SED-Machine can provide rapid observations for Be stars in a comprehensive survey in the future., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, AJ in press

Rotation period clustering in prograde/retrograde rotators might indicate the preliminary indication of the Slivan state in the Koronis family as a result of the YORP effect. We follow the general scenario of dispersion in semimajor axis of the asteroid family members to separate prograde and retrograde rotators in the Koronis family. From the available rotation periods obtained from PTF/iPTF, we can not found the rotation period clustering of objects with H grater than 12 mag in the Koronis family. This could be the result of the intermittent collisional process of small asteroids (D less than ~20 km) which leads to astray Yarkovsky drifting. We report the discovery, tracking and detection circumstances for 85 trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) from the first 42 deg$^{2}$ of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS). This ongoing $r$-band Solar System survey uses the 0.9 deg$^{2}$ field-of-view MegaPrime camera on the 3.6 m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Our orbital elements for these TNOs are precise to a fractional semi-major axis uncertainty $<0.1\%$. We achieve this precision in just two oppositions, as compared to the normal 3-5 oppositions, via a dense observing cadence and innovative astrometric technique. These discoveries are free of ephemeris bias, a first for large trans-Neptunian surveys. We also provide the necessary information to enable models of TNO orbital distributions to be tested against our TNO sample. We confirm the existence of a cold "kernel" of objects within the main cold classical Kuiper belt, and infer the existence of an extension of the "stirred" cold classical Kuiper belt to at least several AU beyond the 2:1 mean motion resonance with Neptune. We find that the population model of Petit et al. (2011) remains a plausible representation of the Kuiper belt. Boulders are ubiquitously found on the surfaces of small rocky bodies in the inner solar system and their spatial and size distributions give insight into the geological evolution and collisional history of the parent bodies. Using images acquired by the Chang'e-2 spacecraft, more than 200 boulders have been identified over the imaged area of the near-Earth asteroid Toutatis. The cumulative boulder size frequency distribution (SFD) shows a steep slope of -4.4 $\pm$ 0.1, which is indicative of a high degree of fragmentation. Similar to Itokawa, Toutatis probably has a rubble-pile structure, as most boulders on its surface cannot solely be explained by impact cratering. The significantly steeper slope for Toutatis' boulder SFD compared to Itokawa may imply a different preservation state or diverse formation scenarios. In addition, the cumulative crater SFD has been used to estimate a surface crater retention age of approximately 1.6 $\pm$ 0.3 Gyr., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures
