This study was carried out to determine chewing lice species of the wild birds, which were brought to the Veterinary Health, Practice and Research Center and Wild Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Center of Hatay Mustafa Kemal University, between May 2018-August 2022. For this purpose, 75 wild birds injured or sick, which needed medical treatment when they arrived at the hospital, were examined for chewing lice. A total of 356 lice specimens were collected, representing 148 males, 157 females and 51 nymphs. The majority of the bird lice collected (317 out of 356) belonged to Amlyceran suborder, while a small number of them (39 out of 356) were obtained in the Ischnoceran suborder. Piagetiella titan (47.8%) detected in Pelecanus onocrotalus was the most common louse species. This was followed by Laemobothrion maximum (16.0%) detected in Clanga pomarina, Buteo rufinus, Circaetus gallicus. Ciconiphilus quadripustulatus (16.0%), Neophilopterus incompletus (10.4%) and Colpocephalum zebra (7.3%) species were detected in Ciconia ciconia. Other species (Colpocephalum ecaudati, Colpocephalum nanum, Pectinopygus forficulatus) were in small numbers (2.5%). Colpocephalum ecaudati found on black kite (Milvus migrans) was reported for the first time in Türkiye. The results of this study contributed to the lice fauna obtained from wild birds in Türkiye.

The current study aimed to detect parasites in Hatay Mountain Gazelles (Gazella gazella), which are categorized as endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The present study was conducted in Hatay Mountain Gazelle Wildlife Development Area, where 40 gazelles inhabited (30 ♀, 10 ♂), 15 of which were over three years old as well-considered adults. Fecal samples were taken from 60 fecal foci immediately after the defecation of the gazelles. Each of the fecal samples was analysed with Benedek sedimentation, Fülleborn flotation and Bearman-Wetzel methods and examined under a light microscope. In addition, Ixodid ticks were collected from an injured gazelle which was brought to Hatay Mustafa Kemal University, Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, then were identified under the stereomicroscope. Nematodirus spp. (5/60, 8%), Marshallagia spp. (4/60, 7%), Trichostrongylus spp. (3/60, 5%) eggs, Dictiyocaulus filaria larvae (3/60, 5%) and Eimeria spp. oocysts (9/60, 15%) were determined based on the microscopic examination. Ixodid tick samples were identified as Rhipicephalus turanicus (2 ♀, 3 ♂). Thus this is the first report of the existence of parasites in Hatay Mountain Gazelles in Turkey. It is thought that skin and fecal examinations should be performed to prevent parasitic diseases in gazelles.

To evaluate the utility of neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR) determined at initial diagnosis in predicting advanced disease stage and discriminating between active and stable disease in sarcoidosis. A total of 465 patients with biopsy-proven sarcoidosis (age: 47 years, 70.5% females) were included in this retrospective cross-sectional study. Data on patient demographics, sarcoidosis stage, clinical status (stable and active), anti-inflammatory treatments, complete blood count, and inflammatory markers including erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet/mean platelet volume (MPV) ratio were recorded. NLR values were compared by subgrouping the patients according to the stage of sarcoidosis and clinical status, while the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve was plotted to determine the role of NLR in the identification of disease activity with the calculation of area under the curve (AUC) and cutoff value via ROC analysis. Overall, active, and stable disease was evident in 36 (7.8%) and 427 (92.2%) patients, respectively. Median NLR values were significantly higher in patients with active disease compared with stable disease (3.31 (2.34–4.31) vs. 2.29 (1.67–3.23), p = 0.005). Advanced sarcoidosis stage was associated with significantly higher NLR values at stages 0, I, II, III and IV, respectively (p = 0.001). ROC analysis revealed an NLR cutoff value of ≥2.39 (AUC (95% CI): 0.70 (0.62–0.79), p < 0.001) to discriminate between active and stable clinic with a sensitivity of 72.0% and specificity of 52.0%. The significantly higher percentage of patients with active vs. stable disease had NLR values ≥2.39 (74.0 vs. 47.0%, p = 0.002). Our findings indicate the potential utility of on-admission NLR values to predict the risk of advanced disease stage and to discriminate between active and stable disease in sarcoidosis. Measured via a simple, readily available, and low-cost test, NLR seems to be a valuable marker for monitoring disease activity and progression.

This study was carried out to determine the effects of supplementation of ground fennel to quail rations on egg production, slaughter, intestinal parasites, and semen quality. For this purpose, 48 female and 24 male quails were used in the study. The experimental groups consisted of the control group with basal feed + 0% ground fennel, and the GF1, GF2, and GF4 groups with ground fennel-supplemented basal feed by 1%, 2%, and 4% respectively, also each group was designed in pairs. The weekly live weight values were found to be numerically higher in the groups with fennel-supplemented rations than in the control group. In addition, the live weight values of female and male quails were also numerically higher in the groups with fennel-supplemented rations. Egg weight, egg production, and feed intake of female quails were high, especially in the GF2 group. Furthermore, the feed conversion ratio was superior in the GF2 group. Regarding the slaughter and carcass parts, the fennel-supplemented groups were numerically higher than the control group. It was observed that the oviduct weight increased with the growing fennel ratio. In addition, the fennel supplementation increased the semen concentration in male quails. The increasing fennel addition enhanced the abnormal and dead spermatozoa rates and decreased semen motility. As a result of the macroscopic examination of the intestinal lumen of the quails in the control and fennel-supplemented groups, no adult helminths were detected; however, Giardia spp.-like cysts were observed. As a result, the usage of ground fennel as a feed additive by 2% had a positive effect on yield characteristics of female quails, and the use by 1% had a positive effect on male quails. Consequently, the usage of ground fennel as a feed additive would be beneficial in quail farming., Bu çalışma bıldırcın rasyonlarına öğütülmüş rezene ilavesinin yumurta verimi, kesim, bağırsak paraziti ve sperma kalitesi üzerine etkilerini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır.

Objectives The diagnosis of sarcoidosis is frequently challenging, requiring a search for less invasive, more reliable diagnostic methods. The bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) analysis has been used in the differential diagnosis of sarcoidosis for many years with a wide sensitivity and specificity rates. The objective of the study is to investigate whether diagnostic performance of the BALF analysis is altered by clinicoradiological findings of patients with sarcoidosis. Materials and methods The present study is a retrospective, single-center, observational study, designed in a sarcoidosis outpatient clinic in a training hospital. Patients who had undergone the bronchoalveolar lavage BAL procedure at diagnosis were included in the study. Demographics, clinical and detailed chest X-ray, and high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) findings at diagnosis were recorded. According to the diagnostic performance, the BALF results were grouped as "diagnostic" and "non-diagnostic," and recorded parameters were compared between the groups. Results Considering the BALF analysis of all the 257 patients, the mean lymphocyte ratio was 41±17.5 (5-80), and the mean CD4/CD8 was 5.5±4.7 (0.1-24.7). The BALF analysis was diagnostic in 56% (n=145) of patients. Diagnostic performance of the procedure did not correlate with any of the demographic data, smoking status, spirometric findings, chest X-ray staging, HRCT findings, and tomography scoring. Extrapulmonary involvement was significantly more frequent in the diagnostic group (66% vs. 34%, p=0.006). Conclusion BALF results signal sarcoidosis in more than half of the patients. The diagnostic role of BALF is greater in patients with extrapulmonary involvement.

Vena cava superior syndrome (VCSS) defines the deterioration in blood circulation as a result of an obstruction in vena cava superior (VCS) and the resulting clinical condition. It might develop due to various reasons including malign and benign ones. Because of swelling on the face and neck, 38 year-old woman was undergone thoracic computed tomography. Pleural effusion was observed in right hemithorax and a mass applying pressure on the vena cava superior on the middle mediastinum. Pet-CT was taken; prevascular lymphadenopathies with SUDmax: 21.1 were observed. The frozen result of mediastinoscopy was reported to be necrosis. Thoracotomy was implemented; the pathologic formation thought to be thrombus in the lumen of vena cava superior was excised. At the end of pathological examination, this mass was reported to be unclassified b-cell lymphoma having the characteristics of Burkitt’s and large-cell lymphoma. The patient was given chemotherapy. The remission was achieved. In our case, the reason for VCSS was intravascular thrombus-shaped large B-cell lymphoma. This case was presented because it is a rare reason for VCSS.

This study aims to investigate the ion exchanged soda lime glasses in terms of their physical and mechanical properties. By the motivation of preparing mechanically strengthened glass also representing antimicrobial property, commercial soda lime glass was subjected to ion exchange treatment using AgNO3-KNO3 mixed salt bath. Ion exchange treatment was performed using different salt bath concentrations at varying temperatures and time. After the ion exchange treatment, glass samples were examined by considering the amount of incorporated silver and potassium into the glass, density changes and the variation of the transmittance in the visible region. Treated glasses were further investigated by means of their surface and mechanical properties such as wettability, indentation behaviors including hardness and resistance to indentation cracking, scratch resistance and bending strength. The transmission of the treated glasses showed a decrease due to the coloring effect of silver. Wettability of the glass surface was reduced, while hydrophilicity was decreased after the ion exchange treatment. Almost 20% increase in the Vickers hardness values, substantial enhancement in the indentation crack resistance and scratch resistance as well as averagely 3.5-4 times higher bending strength were achieved for all of the treated glass samples compared to the untreated glass. This study addressed that the simultaneous incorporation of silver and potassium provided significant improvements on the mechanical properties of the soda lime glass. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. OBJECTIVES Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) accounts for an important part of hospital admissions and health expenses worldwide. The cost increases when treated in a hospital, and reports on this issue are limited in Turkey. This study aimed to investigate direct hospital costs and factors affecting these costs for patients who were hospitalized in our clinic because of the diagnosis of CAP. MATERIAL AND METHODS The records of patients who had been hospitalized for the diagnosis of CAP were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic features, radiological features, pneumonia severity index (PSI), CURB-65 scorings, duration of hospitalization, treatments, and the results of treatments were examined. Total hospitalization costs and the expenses for intervention, medication, examinations, and additional services were recorded. The effect of data on the cost was evaluated. RESULTS The study was conducted with 87 patients with CAP. The mean duration of hospitalization was 15.6 days and nine patients (10.3%) were exitus. The median total hospital cost was 2062 (451-11690) TL [952 euros (€), 1305 dollars ($)], and the median hospitalization expense per day was 148 Turkish Lira (TL) (68.3 €, 93.7 $). Medication expenses and total cost were higher in male patients than in female patients. Abscess/necrotizing pneumonia increased the cost depending on the infiltration that occurred either alone or with parapneumonic pleurisy. Whereas an increase in the PSI stage increased the total cost and expenses for intervention and medication, medication expenses increased in patients with CURB-65 score of 3 and 4 (p

Adult Onset Still Disease (AOSD) is a rare inflammatory disease. A 20-year-old male was sent to our clinic due to pleural effusion with complaints of sore throat, daily spiking fever and shortness of breath. Thoracentesis showed exudative effusion. Despite intense antibiotic treatment, the high fever continued and his clinical condition got worse. Microbiologic studies showed no nonspecific or specific pathogens in sputum, pleura and blood samples. Serum ferritin level was high and due to Yamaguchi criteria, he was diagnosed as AOSD. He was successfully treated with steroid therapy. The diagnosis and management of AOSD is a clinical troublesome because of the heterogeneous clinical presentation, absence of pathognomonic findings, markers and specific treatment. The disease rarely presents with pleural effusion. Since it is not common in respiratory medicine clinical practice, AOSD must be taken into consideration for differential diagnosis of pleural effusion and fever of unknown origin. J Clin Exp Invest 2014; 5 (2): 339-342, Erişkinin Still Hastalığı nadir görülen inflamatuvar bir hastalıktır. Göğüs hastalıkları klinik pratiğinde sık karşılaşılmadığından, plevral efüzyon ve nedeni bilinmeyen ateşin ayırıcı tanısında Still hastalığı ayırıcı tanıda unutulmamalıdır.

A first case of endobronchial mucosal neuroma with sarcoidosis is hereby reported. A 67-year female patient, who was diagnosed as sarcoidosis previously, was admitted to our hospital with symptoms of dyspnea, chest pain and fatigue. Middle lobe atelectasis and endobronchial lesion were observed in thorax computed tomography (CT). Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed polypoid lesions and histopathological examination of biopsy material showed clustered nerve bundles consistent with mucosal neuroma and non-necrotising granulomas consistent with sarcoidosis. Mucosal neuromas are pathognomonic features of multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) type 2B. But other components of MEN type 2B such as medullary tyroid carcinoma or pheochromocytoma were not detected in our patient. Hence, a diagnosis of solitary mucosal neuroma and sarcoidosis in the bronchi was made.
