Drawings on paper produced in color or primed in color play a prominent role in the art of drawing in the early modern period. What influence did the single-colored surface have on the lines, the use of color and the modeling of light and shadow when the drawings were executed? What specific horizons of interpretation are associated with this drawing technique? For the first time, the contributions in the volume investigate these questions using case studies from the north and south. Methodologically up-to-date and from a multi-perspective perspective, they offer fundamentally new results on image-theoretical questions of Evidentia as well as on art-technological studies. The focus is on works by Lorenzo Monaco, Benozzo Gozzoli, Hans Pleydenwurff, Hendrick Goltzius, Rembrandt, Govert Flinck, Nicolas Poussin, Caspar Fraisinger, among others.

Der Band analysiert erstmals die Farbgrundzeichnung von ihren Anfängen nördlich der Alpen bis Albrecht Dürer und beleuchtet ihre Funktionen, Materialästhetik und Medienreflektion im Wandel künstlerischer Anforderungen.Die im 15. Jahrhundert zunehmende Bedeutung der Handzeichnung zeigt sich auch in zahlreichen erhaltenen Farbgrundzeichnungen. Helle und dunkle Zeichenmittel auf farbigen Fonds stellen Materialität in ihrem illusionistischen Potenzial eindrucksvoll heraus. Die Abstraktion von Buntwerten erprobt neue Seherfahrungen, so dass die Technik prädestiniert für Aushandlungsprozesse neuzeitlicher Darstellungsweisen erscheint. Die Nachfrage einer kunstinteressierten Klientel führte zu verschiedenen Popularisierungsverfahren. Mit Blick auf subtile Variationen gelingt eine wissenskulturelle Positionierung der Handzeichnung in neuem Licht.
