This chapter presents a thorough discussion of the ubiquitous problem of alcohol and drugs and their relationship to aggression. The substance abuser is described as a potentially dangerous patient. The problem of substance addiction is divided into five basic issues and the complexities of trying to tease out cause-and-effect relationships among them is discussed. Each chemical substance is discussed separately, and its direct and indirect effects on behavior are noted. The authors also discuss treatment methods, with clinical examples, and the problems of future research.

Differences in development in terns of the type of interaction as well as the onset of the aversive interaction create different kinds of pathologies with regard to ego development in individuals and consequently different kinds of personality disorders which feature remoteness. This paper describes the ego-emergence conditions and ongoing climate that lead to each of the personality disorder clusters that feature remoteness as a central symptom. The first cluster identified is Armoured Ego disorders, the second, Split- Ego disorders, the third, Weak Ego disorders, and the last, Pseudo Ego disorders. Alcohol's role in the relief of stress is reviewed. Limitations are observed in recent studies of alcohol and stress. Where stress has been viewed as synonymous with anxiety or tension, many potential stressors and stress responses have been unaccounted for or ignored. Stress is distinguished from tension and anxiety, and a "stress reduction hypothesis" of alcohol abuse is suggested in place of the recently prominent "tension reduction hypothesis." Alcohol has been found to be a frequent contributor to increased stress. Stress-relief drinking is concluded to be one of several prominent factors in the etiology of alcohol abuse and dependency. Suggestions are made for research and treatment.

This paper illustrates the value of psychoanalysis in groups in promoting the creative potentials of diegophrenics. The concepts in diegophrenia and creativity are defined and described, with two types of creativity postulated: ego alien or oppositional and ego syntonic. Illustrations of how 12 major ego functions can be enhanced in therapy in order to allow the diegophrenic to recover his or her suppressed ego and free it from the ambivalence of subordination and revolt inherent in his/her prevailing pseudo-egos is provided.
