1. The effect of atom losses on the distribution of rapidities in the one-dimensional Bose gas

Abstract: We theoretically investigate the effects of atom losses in the one-dimensional (1D) Bose gas with repulsive contact interactions, a famous quantum integrable system also known as the Lieb-Liniger gas. The generic case of K-body losses (K = 1,2,3,...) is considered. We assume that the loss rate is much smaller than the rate of intrinsic relaxation of the system, so that at any time the state of the system is captured by its rapidity distribution (or, equivalently, by a Generalized Gibbs Ensemble). We give the equation governing the time evolution of the rapidity distribution and we propose a general numerical procedure to solve it. In the asymptotic regimes of vanishing repulsion -- where the gas behaves like an ideal Bose gas -- and hard-core repulsion -- where the gas is mapped to a non-interacting Fermi gas -- we derive analytic formulas. In the latter case, our analytic result shows that losses affect the rapidity distribution in a non-trivial way, the time derivative of the rapidity distribution being both non-linear and non-local in rapidity space.

2. Asymptotic temperature of a lossy condensate

Abstract: We monitor the time evolution of the temperature of phononic collective modes in a one-dimensional quasicondensate submitted to losses. At long times the ratio between the temperature and the energy scale $mc^2$, where $m$ is the atomic mass and $c$ the sound velocity takes, within a precision of 20\%, an asymptotic value. This asymptotic value is observed while $mc^2$ decreases in time by a factor as large as 2.5. Moreover this ratio is shown to be independent on the loss rate and on the strength of interactions. These results confirm theoretical predictions and the measured stationary ratio is in quantitative agreement with the theoretical calculations.

3. Cooling phonon modes of a Bose condensate with uniform few body losses

Abstract: We present a general analysis of the cooling produced by losses on condensates or quasi-condensates. We study how the occupations of the collective phonon modes evolve in time, assuming that the loss process is slow enough so that each mode adiabatically follows the decrease of the mean density. The theory is valid for any loss process whose rate is proportional to the $j$th power of the density, but otherwise spatially uniform. We cover both homogeneous gases and systems confined in a smooth potential. For a low-dimensional gas, we can take into account the modified equation of state due to the broadening of the cloud width along the tightly confined directions, which occurs for large interactions. We find that at large times, the temperature decreases proportionally to the energy scale $mc^2$, where $m$ is the mass of the particles and $c$ the sound velocity. We compute the asymptotic ratio of these two quantities for different limiting cases: a homogeneous gas in any dimension and a one-dimensional gas in a harmonic trap.

4. Rapidity distribution within the defocusing non-linear Schrödinger equation model

Abstract: We consider the classical field integrable system whose evolution equation is the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with defocusing non-linearities, which is the classical limit of the quantum Lieb-Liniger model. We propose a simple derivation of the relation between two sets of conserved quantities: on the one hand the trace of the monodromy matrix, parameterized by the spectral parameter and introduced in the inverse-scattering framework, and on the other hand the rapidity distribution, a concept imported from the Lieb-Liniger model. To do so we use the definition of the rapidity distribution as the asymptotic momentum distribution after a very large expansion. We propose two different ways to derive the result, each one using a thought experiment that implements an expansion.

Abstract: In patients with acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), induction of delta aminolevulinic acid synthase 1 (ALAS1) leads to haem precursor accumulation that may cause recurring acute attacks. In a recent phase III trial, givosiran significantly reduced the attack rate in severe AIP patients. Frequent adverse events were injection-site reaction, fatigue, nausea, chronic kidney disease and increased alanine aminotransferase.To describe the efficacy and safety of givosiran based on a personalized medical approach.We conducted a retrospective patient file study in 25 severe AIP patients treated with givosiran in France. We collected data on clinical and biochemical efficacy along with reports of adverse events.Givosiran drastically reduced the attack rate in our cohort, as 96% were attack-free at the time of the study. The sustained efficacy of givosiran in most patients allowed us to personalize dosing frequency. In 42%, givosiran was only given when haem precursor levels were increasing. Our data suggest that givosiran is most effective when given early in the disease course. We confirmed a high prevalence of adverse events. One patient discontinued treatment due to acute pancreatitis. All patients had hyperhomocysteinemia, and all patients with initial homocysteine levels available showed an increase under treatment. In this context, one patient was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism.The sustained effect of givosiran allowed a decrease in dosing frequency without compromising treatment efficacy. The high prevalence of adverse events emphasizes the importance of restricting the treatment to severe AIP and administering the minimum effective dose for each patient.

6. Relaxation of phonons in the Lieb-Liniger gas by dynamical refermionization

Abstract: We investigate the Lieb-Liniger gas initially prepared in an out-of-equilibrium state that is Gaussian in terms of the phonons. Because the phonons are not exact eigenstates of the Hamiltonian, the gas relaxes to a stationary state at very long times. Thanks to integrability, that stationary state needs not be a thermal state. We characterize the stationary state of the gas after relaxation and compute its phonon population distribution. Technically, this follows from the mapping between the exact eigenstates of the Lieb-Liniger Hamiltonian and those of a non-interacting Fermi gas -- a mapping provided by the Bethe equations -- , as well as on bosonization formulas valid in the low-energy sector of the Hilbert space. Abstract: We investigate the effect of losses on an interacting quantum gas. We show that, for gases in dimension higher than one, assuming together a vanishing correlation time of the reservoir where dissipation occurs, and contact interactions leads to a divergence of the energy increase rate. This divergence is a combined effect of the contact interactions, which impart arbitrary large momenta to the atoms, and the infinite energy width of the reservoir associated to its vanishing correlation time. We show how the divergence is regularized when taking into account the finite energy width of the reservoir, and, for large energy width, we give an expression for the energy increase rate that involves the contact parameter. We then consider the specific case of a weakly interacting Bose Einstein condensate, that we describe using the Bogoliubov theory. Assuming slow losses so that the gas is at any time described by a thermal equilibrium, we compute the time evolution of the temperature of the gas. Using a Bogoliubov analysis, we also consider the case where the regularization of the divergence is due to the finite range of the interaction between atoms., 5 pages + appendices

Abstract: In quantum gases with contact repulsion, the distribution of momenta of the atoms typically decays as $\sim 1/|p|^4$ at large momentum $p$. Tan's relation connects the amplitude of that $1/|p|^4$ tail to the adiabatic derivative of the energy with respect to the gas' coupling constant or scattering length. Here it is shown that the relation breaks down in the one-dimensional Bose gas with contact repulsion, for a peculiar class of stationary states. These states exist thanks to the infinite number of conserved quantities in the system, and they are characterized by a rapidity distribution which itself decreases as $1/|p|^4$. In the momentum distribution, that rapidity tail adds to the usual Tan contact term. Remarkably, atom losses, which are ubiquitous in experiments, do produce such peculiar states. The development of the tail of the rapidity distribution originates from the ghost singularity of the wavefunction immediately after each loss event. Abstract: The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of COVID-19 disease in the French national population of dialysis patients, their course of illness and to identify the risk factors associated with mortality. Our study included all patients on dialysis recorded in the French REIN Registry in April 2020. Clinical characteristics at last follow-up and the evolution of COVID-19 illness severity over time were recorded for diagnosed cases (either suspicious clinical symptoms, characteristic signs on the chest scan or a positive reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) for SARS-CoV-2. A total of 1,621 infected patients were reported on the REIN registry from March 16th, 2020 to May 4th, 2020. Of these, 344 died. The prevalence of COVID-19 patients varied from less than 1% to 10% between regions. The probability of being a case was higher in males, patients with diabetes, those in need of assistance for transfer or treated at a self-care unit. Dialysis at home was associated with a lower probability of being infected as was being a smoker, a former smoker, having an active malignancy, or peripheral vascular disease. Mortality in diagnosed cases (21%) was associated with the same causes as in the general population. Higher age, hypoalbuminemia and the presence of an ischemic heart disease were statistically independently associated with a higher risk of death. Being treated at a selfcare unit was associated with a lower risk. Abstract: We present a general analysis of the cooling produced by losses on condensates or quasi-condensates. We study how the occupations of the collective phonon modes evolve in time, assuming that the loss process is slow enough so that each mode adiabatically follows the decrease of the mean density. The theory is valid for any loss process whose rate is proportional to the jth power of the density, but otherwise spatially uniform. We cover both homogeneous gases and systems confined in a smooth potential. For a low-dimensional gas, we can take into account the modified equation of state due to the broadening of the cloud width along the tightly confined directions, which occurs for large interactions. We find that at large times, the temperature decreases proportionally to the energy scale mc2, where m is the mass of the particles and c the sound velocity. Abstract: We review the recent theoretical and experimental progress regarding the generalized hydrodynamics (GHD) behavior of the one-dimensional (1D) Bose gas with contact repulsive interactions, also known as the Lieb–Liniger gas. In the first section, we review the theory of the Lieb–Liniger gas, introducing the key notions of the rapidities and of the rapidity distribution. The latter characterizes the Lieb–Liniger gas after relaxation and is at the heart of GHD. We also present the asymptotic regimes of the Lieb–Liniger gas with their dedicated approximate descriptions. In the second section we enter the core of the subject and review the theoretical results of GHD in 1D Bose gases. The third and fourth sections are dedicated to experimental results obtained in cold atom experiments: the experimental realization of the Lieb–Liniger model is presented in section 3, with a selection of key results for systems at equilibrium, and section 4 presents the experimental tests of the GHD theory. In section 5 we review the effects of atom losses, which, assuming slow loss processes, can be described within the GHD framework. We conclude with a few open questions.

Abstract: The emergence of a special type of fluid-like behavior at large scales in one-dimensional (1d) quantum integrable systems, theoretically predicted in 2016, is established experimentally, by monitoring the time evolution of the in situ density profile of a single 1d cloud of $^{87}{\rm Rb}$ atoms trapped on an atom chip after a quench of the longitudinal trapping potential. The theory can be viewed as a dynamical extension of the thermodynamics of Yang and Yang, and applies to the whole range of repulsion strength and temperature of the gas. The measurements, performed on weakly interacting atomic clouds that lie at the crossover between the quasicondensate and the ideal Bose gas regimes, are in very good agreement with the 2016 theory. Abstract: We report the demonstration of cooling by three-body losses in a Bose gas. We use a harmonically confined one-dimensional (1D) Bose gas in the quasicondensate regime and, as the atom number decreases under the effect of three-body losses, the temperature $T$ drops up to a factor of 4. The ratio ${k}_{B}T/(m{c}^{2})$ stays close to 0.64, where $m$ is the atomic mass and $c$ the speed of sound in the trap center. The dimensionless 1D interaction parameter $\ensuremath{\gamma}$, evaluated at the trap center, spans more than 2 orders of magnitudes over the different sets of data. We present a theoretical analysis for a homogeneous 1D gas in the quasicondensate regime, which predicts that the ratio ${k}_{B}T/(m{c}^{2})$ converges towards 0.6 under the effect of three-body losses. More sophisticated theoretical predictions that take into account the longitudinal harmonic confinement and transverse effects are in agreement within 30% with experimental data.

Abstract: International audience; We investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics following a sudden quench of the interaction strength, in a one-dimensional quasi-condensate trapped at the surface of an atom chip. Within a linearized approximation, the system is described by independent collective modes and the quench squeezes the phase space distribution of each mode, leading to a subsequent breathing of each quadrature. We show that the collective modes are resolved by the power spectrum of density ripples which appear after a short time of flight. This allows us to experimentally probe the expected breathing phenomenon. Our results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions which take the longitudinal harmonic confinement into account.

Abstract: We analyse the breathing-mode oscillations of a harmonically quenched Tonks-Giradeau (TG) gas using an exact finite-temperature dynamical theory. We predict a striking collective manifestation of impenetrability---a collective many-body bounce effect. The effect, while being invisible in the evolution of the in-situ density profile of the gas, can be revealed through a nontrivial periodic narrowing of its momentum distribution, taking place at twice the rate of the fundamental breathing-mode frequency. We identify physical regimes for observing the many-body bounce and construct the respective nonequilibrium phase diagram as a function of the quench strength and the initial temperature of the gas. Abstract: International audience; We investigate the cooling produced by a loss process non selective in energy on a one-dimensional (1D) Bose gas with repulsive contact interactions in the quasi-condensate regime. By performing nonlinear classical field calculations for a homogeneous system, we show that the gas reaches a non-thermal state where different modes have acquired different temperatures. After losses have been turned off, this state is robust with respect to the nonlinear dynamics, described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We argue that the integrability of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation is linked to the existence of such long-lived non-thermal states, and illustrate this by showing that such states are not supported within a non-integrable model of two coupled 1D gases of different masses. We go beyond a classical field analysis, taking into account the quantum noise introduced by the discreteness of losses, and show that the non-thermal state is still produced and its non-thermal character is even enhanced. Finally, we extend the discussion to gases trapped in a harmonic potential and present experimental observations of a long-lived non-thermal state within a trapped 1D quasi-condensate following an atom loss process.

Abstract: The effect of atom losses on a homogeneous one-dimensional Bose gas lying within the quasicondensate regime is investigated using a Monte Carlo wave-function approach. The evolution of the system is calculated, conditioned by the loss sequence, namely, the times of individual losses and the position of the removed atoms. We describe the gas within the linearized Bogoliubov approach. For each mode, we find that, for a given quantum trajectory, the state of the system converges towards a coherent state, i.e., the ground state, displaced in phase space. We show that, provided losses are recorded with a temporal and spatially resolved detector, quantum feedback can be implemented and cooling to the ground state of one or several modes can be realized.

Abstract: International audience; A trapped atom interferometer involving state-selective adiabatic potentials with two microwave frequencies on a chip is proposed. We show that this configuration provides a way to achieve a high degree of symmetry between the two arms of the interferometer, which is necessary for coherent splitting and recombination of thermal (i.e., noncondensed) atoms. The profile in real space reveals sinusoidal width oscillations whose frequency varies continuously through the quasicondensate to ideal Bose gas crossover. A comparison with theoretical models taking temperature into account is provided. In momentum space, we report the first observation of a frequency doubling in the quasicondensate regime, corresponding to a self-reflection mechanism due to the repulsive interactions. Such a mechanism is predicted for a fermionized system, and has not been observed to date. The disappearance of the frequency doubling through the crossover is mapped out experimentally, giving insights into the dynamics of the breathing evolution.

Abstract: We study the dynamics of ultracold atoms in a periodic optical potential submitted to a constant external force. Bloch oscillations in the fundamental and first excited bands of the potential are observed. In addition to a solid-state analysis we give a quantum-optics interpretation of this effect in terms of photon exchanges between the atoms and the laser waves. The dynamics of Bloch oscillations are equivalent to a sequence of adiabatic rapid passages between momentum states and can be described using the dressed-atom approach. We demonstrate efficient and dissipation-free acceleration of atoms by coherent transfer of a large number of photon momenta (\ensuremath{\approx}100). This technique produces atomic beams with a very small longitudinal velocity spread that may find applications in atom optics and precision measurements.

Abstract: Summary form only given. Atom chips [1] have shown to be very successful for trapping and manipulating cold atoms. Atom interferometry in the vicinity of an atom chip has been recently achieved by coherently splitting a Bose-Einstein condensate with radiofrequency [2] and microwave [3] dressing. However, some limitations on the precision of the phase measurement occur in this case due to the phase diffusion process resulting from mean field interactions in the Bose-Einstein condensate.In this communication, we will discuss the possibility of using a thermal (i.e. non-condensed) ensemble of ultra-cold atoms trapped on an atom chip in order to create a trapped-atom interferometer with much weaker atomic interactions. In such a scheme (which can be seen as the atomic equivalent of a white light interferometer in optics), the coherence time will strongly depend on the level of symmetry that can be achieved between the potentials forming the two arms of the interferometer. For example, in a simple model of two harmonic potentials, it can be shown that a slight relative frequency difference Δω/ω can be associated with a limitation on the coherence time T given by the following expression: T≈ 2π1ιω kΘ Δω where Θ is the temperature of the atomic ensemble and k the Boltzmann constant (the latter expression being valid only for kΘ >> ! ω). For example, a relative asymmetry of 10-3 will result, for a temperature of about 1μK, to a limitation on the coherence time of 40ms, which favourably compares to what has been achieved experimentally with Bose-Einstein condensates [2]. We will then discuss how we plan to achieve, with the on-going experiment at Thales TRT [4], a splitting of the atomic cloud with the highest possible level of symmetry. The basic idea is to use internal state labelling on the so-called “clock states” of the 87Rb atom and microwave dressing [3] with two independent coplanar waveguides, each waveguide being preferentially resonant with one of the two internal states involved in the process. This way, we expect to have quasi-independent control over the two arms of the interferometer and thus to be able to achieve a coherent splitting as much symmetrical as possible.We will finally discuss the potential applications of this technique in terms of acceleration and gravity measurement with cold atoms on a chip, which could be of great interest in the future if combined, for example, with high bandwidth microelectromechanical sensors.

Abstract: We investigate the momentum distribution of weakly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose gases at thermal equilibrium both experimentally and theoretically. Momentum distribution of 1D Bose gases is measured using a focusing technique, whose resolution we improve via a guiding scheme. The momentum distribution compares very well with quantum Monte Carlo calculations for the Lieb-Liniger model at finite temperature, allowing for an accurate thermometry of the gas that agrees with (and improves upon) the thermometry based on in situ density fluctuation measurements. The quasicondensation crossover is investigated via two different experimental parameter sets, corresponding to the two different sides of the crossover. Classical field theory is expected to correctly describe the quasicondensation crossover of weakly interacting gases. We derive the condition of validity of the classical field theory, and find that, in typical experiments, interactions are too strong for this theory to be accurate. This is confirmed by a comparison between the classical field predictions and the numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo calculations.

We show that the strong positive correlation between opposite momenta, expected in a Bose-Einstein condensate with a true long-range order, almost vanishes in a phase-fluctuating quasicondensate where the long-range order is destroyed. Abstract: We report on local, in situ measurements of atom number fluctuations in slices of a one-dimensional Bose gas on an atom chip setup. By using current modulation techniques to prevent cloud fragmentation, we are able to probe the crossover from weak to strong interactions. For weak interactions, fluctuations go continuously from super- to sub-Poissonian as the density is increased, which is a signature of the transition between the subregimes where the two-body correlation function is dominated, respectively, by thermal and quantum contributions. At stronger interactions, the super-Poissonian region disappears, and the fluctuations go directly from Poissonian to sub-Poissonian, as expected for a ``fermionized'' gas.

Abstract: By measuring the density fluctuations in a highly elongated weakly interacting Bose gas, we observe and quantify the transition from the ideal gas to a quasicondensate regime throughout the dimensional crossover from a purely one-dimensional (1D) to an almost three-dimensional (3D) gas. We show that that the entire transition region and the dimensional crossover are described surprisingly well by the modified Yang-Yang model. Furthermore, we find that at low temperatures the linear density at the quasicondensate transition scales according to an interaction-driven scenario of a longitudinally uniform 1D Bose gas, whereas at high temperatures it scales according to the degeneracy-driven critical scenario of transverse condensation of a 3D ideal gas.

We find a positive skewness of the atom number distribution in the ideal gas regime and a reduced skewness compatible with zero in the quasi-condensate regime. For our parameters, the third moment is a thermodynamic quantity whose measurement constitutes a sensitive test of the equation of state and our results are in agreement with a modified Yang-Yang thermodynamic prediction. Abstract: It was recently demonstrated that wire guide roughness can be suppressed by modulating the wire currents so that the atoms experience a time-averaged potential without roughness. We theoretically study the limitations of this technique. At low modulation frequency, we show that the longitudinal potential modulation produces a heating of the cloud and we compute the heating rate. We also give a quantum derivation of the rough conservative potential associated with the micro-motion of the atoms. At large modulation frequency, we compute the loss rate due to non adiabatic spin flip and show it presents resonnances at multiple modulation frequencies. Abstract: Sideband laser cooling using stimulated Raman transitions is performed on trapped cesium atoms. The confinement is produced by a far–off-resonance dipole trap consisting of two crossed YAG beams which, by interference, create a one-dimensional optical lattice. In a pure intensity lattice, we measure a 1D temperature of T = 6 μK corresponding to a mean quantum vibrational number of about nv = 0.75. In a polarization gradient lattice, the final temperature is T = 3.6 μK corresponding to nv 2.4.

Abstract: International audience; We report in situ measurements of density fluctuations in a quasi one dimensional Bose gas at thermal equilibrium in an elongated harmonic trap. We observe an excess of fluctuations compared to the shot noise level expected for uncorrelated atoms. At low atomic density, the measured excess is in good agreement with the expected bunching for an ideal Bose gas. At high density, the measured fluctuations are strongly reduced compared to the ideal gas case. We attribute this reduction to repulsive interatomic interactions. The data are compared with a calculation for an interacting Bose gas in the quasi-condensate regime.

Abstract: International audience; We present a detailed model describing the effects of wire corrugation on the trapping potential experienced by a cloud of atoms above a current carrying micro wire. We calculate the distortion of the current distribution due to corrugation and then derive the corresponding roughness in the magnetic field above the wire. Scaling laws are derived for the roughness as a function of height above a ribbon shaped wire. We also present experimental data on micro wire traps using cold atoms which complement some previously published measurements and which demonstrate that wire corrugation can satisfactorily explain our observations of atom cloud fragmentation above electroplated gold wires. Finally, we present measurements of the corrugation of new wires fabricated by electron beam lithography and evaporation of gold. These wires appear to be substantially smoother than electroplated wires.

Abstract: We show that the interaction between Rydberg atomic states can provide continuous spin squeezing of atoms with two ground states. The interaction prevents the simultaneous excitation of more than a single atom in the sample to the Rydberg state, and we propose to utilize this blockade effect to realize an effective collective spin Hamiltonian ${J}_{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{y}^{2}.$ With this Hamiltonian the quantum-mechanical uncertainty of the spin variable ${J}_{x}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{y}$ can be significantly reduced.

Abstract: In this paper we present a state vector analysis of the generation of atomic spin squeezing by measurement of an optical phase shift. The frequency resolution is improved when a spin squeezed sample is used for spectroscopy in place of an uncorrelated sample. When light is transmitted through an atomic sample some photons will be scattered out of the incident beam, and this has a destructive effect on the squeezing. Abstract: We study one-dimensional sideband cooling of Cesium atoms strongly confined in a far-detuned optical lattice. The Lamb-Dicke regime is achieved in the lattice direction whereas the transverse confinement is much weaker. The employed sideband cooling method, first studied by Vuletic et al.\cite{Vule98}, uses Raman transitions between Zeeman levels and produces a spin-polarized sample. We present a detailed study of this cooling method and investigate the role of elastic collisions in the system. We accumulate $83(5)%$ of the atoms in the vibrational ground state of the strongly confined motion, and elastic collisions cool the transverse motion to a temperature of $2.8 \mu $K=$0.7 \hbar\omega_{\rm osc}/k_{\rm B}$, where $\omega_{\rm osc}$ is the oscillation frequency in the strongly confined direction. The sample then approaches the regime of a quasi-2D cold gas. We analyze the limits of this cooling method and propose a dynamical change of the trapping potential as a mean of cooling the atomic sample to still lower temperatures. Measurements of the rate of thermalization between the weakly and strongly confined degrees of freedom are compatible with the zero energy scattering resonance observed previously in weak 3D traps. For the explored temperature range the measurements agree with recent calculations of quasi-2D collisions\cite{Petr01}. Transparent analytical models reproduce the expected behavior for $k_{\rm B}T \gg \hbar \omega_{\rm osc}$ and also for $k_{\rm B}T \ll \hbar \omega_{\rm osc}$ where the 2D features are prominent., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: International audience; We describe a Raman cooling scheme that allows for the simultaneous polarization and cooling of cesium atoms. Using efficient chirped Raman pulses, cesium atoms confined in a red-detuned crossed dipole trap are 80 % polarized and cooled to a temperature of 2.4 µK. After cooling, the phase-space density reaches 10^{−3} . We have strong evidence that this value is limited by multiple photon scattering within the atomic cloud.
