The effect of climate change on mountain vegetation is influenced by environmental factors and site effects. To monitor the effect of climate change we therefore need to understand species' sensitivity to microclimate and environmental gradients. The objective of this study is to study widespread plant species' temporal and spatial variation along environmental and microclimate gradients in Norwegian mountains along a coast–inland gradient. Occurrence and abundance of plant species were surveyed in 110 study plots in four mountains at two points in time, seven years apart. Of the 222 plant species registered,
Salix herbacea ,Phyllodoce caerulea ,Carex bigelowii ,Juncus trifidus ,Vaccinium myrtillus ,Avenella flexuosa , andEmpetrum nigrum were widespread across all mountains. These species responded differently to environmental and microclimate gradients, and abundance data were more sensitive than occurrence data. During the short time span we observed some indications of response which might support the assumption that boreal species outcompete alpine species in the forest transition zone, but our data do not indicate this effect at higher altitudes. Monitoring of climate change in mountains needs to include plots along environmental and microclimate gradients as well as an abundance of a set of widespread plant species that represent regional, local environmental, and climate gradients. However, when monitoring perennial plant species, the need for long‐term monitoring projects is high because such species develop slowly over several decades. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
The Arctic region is warming at over twice the mean rate of the Northern Hemisphere and nearly four times faster than the globe since 1979. The local rate of warming is even higher in the European archipelago of Svalbard. This warming is transforming the terrestrial snow cover, which modulates surface energy exchanges with the atmosphere, accounts for most of the runoff in Arctic catchments and is also a transient reservoir of atmospherically deposited compounds, including pollutants. Improved observations, understanding and modelling of changes in Arctic snow cover are needed to anticipate the effects these changes will have on the Arctic climate, atmosphere, terrestrial ecosystems and socioeconomic factors. Svalbard has been an international hub of polar research for many decades and benefits from a well-developed science infrastructure. Here, we present an agenda for the future of snow research in Svalbard, jointly developed by a multidisciplinary community of experts. We review recent trends in snow research, identify key knowledge gaps, prioritize future research efforts and recommend supportive actions to advance our knowledge of present and future snow conditions pertaining to glacier mass balance, permafrost, surface hydrology, terrestrial ecology, the cycling and fate of atmospheric contaminants, and remote sensing of snow cover. This perspective piece addresses issues relevant to the circumpolar North and could be used as a template for other national or international Arctic research plans.

This article presents a comprehensive documentation and analysis of long-term observations of year-round groundwater occurrences in rivers and various types of taliks under continuous permafrost conditions on Svalbard. Previously thought to be nonexistent, the existence of these taliks has been confirmed through rigorous field observations, geotechnical investigations, and extensive data collection. This discovery holds pivotal implications for our current understanding of permafrost conditions in central Svalbard. The research reveals the presence of several year-round taliks in close proximity to the settlements in Longyearbyen, Pyramiden, and Ny-Ålesund. Importantly, these findings open up opportunities for using these taliks as groundwater reservoirs for extraction of drinking water, either in natural state or with appropriate engineering modifications. Furthermore, climate change may the possibilities in future by expanding the size of these talik reservoirs due to rising air temperatures and increased inflow of fresh water over prolonged summer. The results underscore the importance of including river taliks in continuous permafrost areas in water management strategies for Svalbard and similar Arctic regions. This research not only challenges prior assumptions but also offers valuable insights for sustainable water resource utilization in a changing climate context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The ground thermal regime and permafrost development have an important influence on geomorphological processes in periglacial regions and ultimately landscape development. About 10 % of unstable rock slopes in Norway are potentially underlain by widespread permafrost. Permafrost thaw and degradation may play a role in slope destabilisation, and more knowledge about rock wall permafrost in Norway is needed to investigate possible links between the ground thermal regime, geomorphological activity and natural hazards. We assess spatio-temporal permafrost variations in selected rock walls in Norway over the last 120 years. Ground temperature is modelled using the two-dimensional ground heat flux model CryoGrid 2D along nine profiles crossing instrumented rock walls in Norway. The simulation results show the distribution of permafrost is sporadic to continuous along the modelled profiles. Results suggest that ground temperature at 20 m depth in steep rock faces increased by 0.2 ∘C per decade on average since the 1980s, and rates of change increase with elevation within a single rock wall section. Heat flow direction is primarily vertical within mountains in Norway. Nevertheless, narrow ridges may still be sensitive to even small differences in ground surface temperature and may have horizontal heat fluxes. This study further demonstrates how rock wall temperature increase rates and rock wall permafrost distribution are influenced by factors such as surface air temperature uncertainties; surface offsets arising from the incoming shortwave solar radiation; snow conditions on, above and below rock walls; and rock wall geometry and size together with adjacent blockfield-covered plateaus or glaciers.

- Abstract
Juvfonne is a small ice patch in the Norwegian mountain region Jotunheimen. Since 2010 annual investigations of mass balance with point measurements of snow accumulation and ablation have been carried out together with surface elevation and ice patch extent measurements. Overall, Jotunheimen glaciers have lost around 15% of area and significant amounts of mass since the 1960s, with accelerated thinning since 2000. However, Juvfonne is prevailing, despite years with highly negative mass balances and a greater variability than the other glaciers. Here we use data from two nearby automatic weather stations and a sonic snow depth sensor next to Juvfonne. In winter season, deposition of windblown snow on Juvfonne is estimated to cause three to four times more snow accumulation than in the surroundings. The snow accumulation is dependent on wind direction and speed. Major snowfall events are associated with storms or synoptic cold fronts. Ablation is related to cumulative positive degree days, but short periods of high melt are characterised by advection of warm and humid air masses., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

- Abstract
The Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW), in the context of the framework of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), published the Measurement of Cryospheric Variables, Volume II of the Guide to Instruments and Methods of Observation in 2018, in which best practice for observations of snow parameters was included. As a follow-up effort, measurement best practices for the other cryosphere components are under development, including permafrost and seasonally frozen ground. The measurement best practice for permafrost aims to define reference methods for the configuration and ongoing operation of stations for in situ observations in high mountains and polar regions. It will: address gaps in the existing permafrost monitoring systems, define methods for improving traceability and comparability, recommend instrumental characteristics and provide measurements uncertainty evaluation. A further objective is to support capacity building of countries in terms of developing a permafrost observation network. A Task Team within the framework of GCW was established, to lead the development and publication of a complete guide to the measurements of permafrost variables. The documents in preparation will be coordinated with the ongoing revision of Products and Requirements of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Permafrost Essential Climate Variable (ECV), including existing variables measured by the GTN-P (Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost). Further, the needs of developing Essential Arctic Variables (EAV) and Shared Arctic Variables (SAV) identified at the Arctic Observing Summit (AOS) are considered. The work will be based on existing methodologies, promoting and recommending methods to improve data reliability and traceability, also for the implementation of new stations.

- Abstract
The Arctic region is presently warming at over twice the mean rate of the northern hemisphere. The local rate of warming is even higher in the European archipelago of Svalbard (Rantanen et al., 2002). This warming is transforming the terrestrial snow cover, which modulates surface energy exchanges with the atmosphere, accounts for most of the runoff in Arctic catchments, and is also a transient reservoir of atmospherically-deposited compounds, including pollutants. Improved observations, understanding and modelling of changes in Arctic snow cover are therefore needed to anticipate the effects these changes will have on Arctic climate, atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems. Svalbard has been an international hub of polar research for many decades, and benefits from a well-developed science infrastructure. Here, we present an agenda for the future of snow research in Svalbard, jointly developed by a multidisciplinary community of experts. We review recent trends in snow research, identify key knowledge gaps, prioritise future research efforts, and recommend supportive actions to advance knowledge of present and future snow conditions pertaining to glacier mass balance, permafrost, surface hydrology, terrestrial ecology, the cycling and fate of atmospheric contaminants, and remote sensing of snow cover. This agenda addresses issues relevant to the circumpolar North and could be used as a template for other national or international Arctic research plans.

- Abstract

- Abstract
In 2021, both social and economic activities began to return towards the levels preceding the COVID-19 pandemic for some parts of the globe, with others still experiencing restrictions. Meanwhile, the climate has continued to respond to the ongoing increase in greenhouse gases and resulting warming. La Niña, a phenomenon which tends to depress global temperatures while changing rainfall patterns in many regions, prevailed for all but two months of the year. Despite this, 2021 was one of the six-warmest years on record as measured by global mean surface temperature with an anomaly of between +0.21° and +0.28°C above the 1991–2020 climatology.

Lake surface temperatures were their highest on record during 2021. The number of warm days over land also reached a new record high. Exceptional heat waves struck the Pacific Coast of North America, leading to a new Canadian maximum temperature of 49.6°C at Lytton, British Columbia, on 29 June, breaking the previous national record by over 4°C. In Death Valley, California, the peak temperature reached 54.4°C on 9 July, equaling the temperature measured in 2020, and the highest temperature recorded anywhere on the globe since at least the 1930s. Over the Mediterranean, a provisional new European record of 48.8°C was set in Sicily on 11 August. In the atmosphere, the annual mean tropospheric temperature was among the 10 highest on record, while the stratosphere continued to cool. While La Niña was present except for June and July, likely influencing Australia’s coolest year since 2012 and wettest since 2016, other modes of variability played important roles. A negative Indian Ocean dipole event became established during July, associated with a warmer east and cooler west Indian Ocean. Northern Hemisphere winters were affected by a negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation at both the beginning and end of 2021. In the Southern Hemisphere, a very strong positive Southern Annular Mode (also known as the Antarctic Oscillation)

Knowledge about how weather conditions affect travel behavior in different user groups and contexts is relevant for planners and policymakers to facilitate sustainable transportation systems. We aimed to assess the influence of day-to-day weather on cycling for transportation among parents of young children with access to different bike types (e-bike vs non e-bike) in a natural study setting over nine months. We hypothesized less impact of weather variability on cycling when using an e-bike compared with a non e-bike. A randomized, controlled trial was conducted in Southern Norway. The intervention group (n = 18) was in random order equipped with an e-bike with trailer for child transportation (n = 6), a cargo (longtail) bike (n = 6) and a traditional bike with trailer (n = 6), each for three months. These 18 participants reported cycling on 832 out of 3276 person-days (25%). We used dynamic structural equation modeling for intensive longitudinal data to examine the relations between daily weather conditions, bike type (e-bike vs traditional bike), and cycling (dichotomized daily at yes or no). Air temperature (positively) and wind speed (negatively) were both credible predictors of cycling, whereas the other predictors (precipitation in the morning (yes or no) and presence of snow (yes or no) were not. We added interaction terms between bike type and weather conditions, but none of the interaction terms had a credible effect on cycling. Thus, the relations between weather conditions and cycling were not moderated by bike type among parents of young children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is chapter 2 of the State of Environmental Science in Svalbard (SESS) report 2021. Predicted temperature increases in the Arctic are expected to fundamentally alter tundra ecosystem dynamics. The Arctic’s extreme year-to-year and place-to-place variability make long-term monitoring challenging, yet essential for environmental conservation, management and policy making. COAT has developed a framework that addresses these complex issues using a holistic, ecosystem-based adaptive approach. This is achieved by integrating data on the state of various characteristics of the ecosystem measured at relevant sites and relevant times to reach clearly defined goals and targets for monitoring the terrestrial food web. For this reason, COAT Svalbard is an essential component of the Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System (SIOS). COAT Svalbard contains six monitoring modules, with study sites in two contrasting regions in Svalbard, Nordenskiöld Land (inland) and Brøggerhalvøya (coastal). Five of the modules focus on the Svalbard food web — vegetation, Arctic fox, geese, ptarmigan and reindeer. The sixth module, a climate-monitoring network with full-scale operational weather stations and associated infrastructure, has now been fully implemented. Svalbard’s tundra ecosystems have undergone rapid and substantial changes in climatic conditions — manifested particularly as rising surface temperatures, longer and warmer growing seasons, shortening of the snow-covered season and rising permafrost temperatures. Currently, monitored vertebrate populations appear to be stable or increasing in these regions. Long-term monitoring of vegetation communities is being implemented and will enhance understanding of bottom-up processes in the terrestrial food web.

This is chapter 12 of the State of Environmental Science in Svalbard (SESS) report 2020 (https://sios-svalbard.org/SESS_Issue3). The observed mean annual permafrost temperature data for the period 2016-2019 at 10-20 m depths show a range from no warming in the Adventdalen, Ny-Ålesund and Barentsburg areas, up to 0.15°C/yr warming in inner Adventdalen at Janssonhaugen. This shows that there is still a response to the general warming that Svalbard has seen over the last decades. During the observation period, the mean annual air temperature declined by 0.6°C, with a particular cooling in the autumns. There was a clear reduction in the amount of precipitation of 100 mm. This caused the top permafrost temperature to decrease at all observation sites ranging from 0.2°C/yr at Kapp Linné to 0.6°C/yr in Barentsburg. The active layer has mostly decreased slightly in thickness over the 2016-2019 period from 1 cm/yr in Ny-Ålesund to 6.5 cm/yr in Adventdalen, while two sites had small increases, 1 cm/yr at Kapp Linne and 3.5 cm/yr at Janssonhaugen. In the blockfield at Breinosa the active layer doubled to 98 cm, while in raised marine sediments in Barentsburg the active layer thinned by 18.5 cm/yr from summer 2017 to summer 2019. The ground ice content in the Svalbard permafrost observation boreholes is largest in the permafrost in valley bottom sediments, up to 160% (relative to dry weight), with much less ice in the bedrock sites, typically below 15%. In Adventdalen the permafrost has a much higher content of ground ice, reaching 150% in the top 1-3 m, where terrestrial sediments such as loess and solifluction sediment dominate, and clearly lower ice content ~25-30% in the fluvial and marine sediments below. The overview of the drilling equipment demonstrates clearly that Svalbard is now well-equipped for drilling boreholes with a range of equipment, allowing creation of both deep and shallow boreholes. The review of the drilling methods used for the existing observation boreholes shows that most of them, even though made for permafrost observation, did not collect cores, and some do not even have any stratigraphical record.

This is chapter 9 of the State of Environmental Science in Svalbard (SESS) report 2020 (https://sios-svalbard.org/SESS_Issue3). Fundamental knowledge gaps and scaling issues hamper efforts to determine how changes in snow cover and snow distribution affect ecosystems. The presence of snow cover has huge impact on Arctic ecosystems, human activities, atmospheric processes and Earth’s surface energy balance. Mapping snow cover over large regions is challenging because of its variability over time and space. Also, the small number of weather stations that measure snow cover contributes to a poor observational base. Svalbard is located on the border between the ice-covered Arctic Ocean and the warmer North Atlantic, which means the sea is a controlling factor for Svalbard’s climate. By using remote sensing monitoring it is possible to get a better overview of snow conditions on land. This information can be compared with on-site observations of snow, output from snow models, and evaluated in relation to the sea-ice extent in the adjacent sea. A 34-year satellite data record for snow cover indicates that snow now starts melting more than a week earlier. The total number of snow-free days in summer is increasing fastest in regions dominated by lowland valleys and coastal plains. Most noticeable are the trends centred near the large valleys of Nordenskiöld Land. Negative trends dominate the extent of the sea ice as well. There is significant and positive correlation between sea-ice area and snow-cover extent at elevations up to 250 m in June, the month when snow melt begins. Snow melt, again, is probably strongly affected by ocean–air interactions and energy exchange when warm (or cold) winds from an open (or ice-covered) ocean come in over land.

We added interaction terms between bike type and weather conditions, but none of the interaction terms had a credible effect on cycling. Thus, the relations between weather conditions and cycling were not moderated by bike type among parents of young children.

This is chapter 2 of the State of Environmental Science in Svalbard (SESS) report 2019 (https://sios-svalbard.org/SESS_Issue2). COAT is a response to the urgent international calls for establishment of observation systems that make it possible to gain insight into how climate impacts Arctic tundra. COAT Svalbard is an essential component of SIOS and serves to optimise and integrate the ecosystem-based terrestrial monitoring. Variations from year to year and differences from place to place make long-term monitoring essential to support the complex decisions involved in conservation, management and policymaking. The COAT approach is holistic, covering entire ecosystems by integrating information about living and non-living factors over time and space, with clearly defined monitoring goals. Monitoring modules within COAT Svalbard track five key climate-sensitive food web pathways as well as climate parameters that determine how those pathways function (www.coat.no). Each module is described in terms of expected direct and indirect relationships between organisms in the food web pathways, and how climate and management interventions might influence these interactions. The programme is implemented according to a peer-reviewed Science Plan with a solid foundation in the scientific literature. COAT Svalbard focuses on two contrasting Arctic regions: Nordenskiöld Land and Brøggerhalvøya and surrounding areas. The vertebrate populations being monitored in these areas currently appear to be stable or growing. However, the lack of long-term monitoring of the vegetation communities on which these animals rely hinders understanding of bottom-up processes within the food web. COAT aims to fill these gaps and provide new insight into how climate change impacts High Arctic tundra ecosystems.

This is chapter 10 of the State of Environmental Science in Svalbard (SESS) report 2019 (https://sios-svalbard.org/SESS_Issue2). Permafrost temperature presented in this report, including the first full year of ground temperature data from the Hornsund area, indicate that the north-south gradient present in air temperatures is also present in ground temperatures in Svalbard. Permafrost temperatures are warmest in Hornsund in the south, intermediate in Barentsburg and Kapp Linne in the central part, and lowest around Ny-Ålesund in the northern part and in the centrally located Adventdalen area. The ground is warmest near the coasts (e.g. Kapp Linne and Hornsund) and in areas with thicker snow cover during winter (e.g. Endalen and Bayelva). Mean annual ground temperatures measured at the depth of zero annual amplitude varied from ‑1.2°C (Hornsund, 12 m depth) to ‑5.1°C (Breinosa and Old Auroral Station, 10 m depth). During the 2017-2018 hydrological year, the duration of active-layer freeze-back in Svalbard varied from 2 days at Breinosa to 151 days at Endalen. Active-layer thickness ranged in summer 2018 between 64 cm (Breinosa) and 463 cm (Hornsund).
