Abstract

We report on synthesis and characterization of gallide cluster based Mo8Ga41 superconductor. Transport and magnetization measurements confirm the superconducting transition temperature to be 9.8 K. The upper critical field, lower critical field, Ginzburg-Landau coherence length and penetration depth are estimated to be 11.8T, 150G, 5.2nm, 148nm respectively. The electronic band structure, density of states and phonon dispersion curve calculations are obtained by using Density Functional Theory. The core level X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) reveals the binding energy information of the constituting elements Mo and Ga in Mo8Ga41. The valence band spectra from XPS is in good agreement with calculated density of states (DOS). The zero field critical current density (Jc) at T = 2 K is ~ 3*10^5 A/cm^2 which is indicative of efficient flux pinning in the as grown compound. About two fold enhancement in critical current density with application of external pressure (1.1 GPa) is observed with marginal decrease in transition temperature. The fitting of current density to double exponential model confirms possibility of two gap superconductivity in Mo8Ga41.

Abstract

SrxBi2Se3 is recently reported to be a superconductor derived from topological insulator Bi2Se3. It shows a maximum resistive Tc of 3.25 K at ambient pressure. We report magnetic (upto 1 GPa) and transport properties (upro 8 Gpa) under pressure for single crystalline Sr0.1Bi2Se3 superconductor. Magnetic measurements show that Tc decreases from ~2.6 K (0 GPa) to ~1.9 K (0.81 GPa). Similar behavior is observed in transport properties as well without much change in the metallic characteristics in normal state resistivity. No reentrant superconducting phase (Physical Review B 93, 144514 (2016)) is observed at high pressure. Normal state resistivity near Tc is explained by Fermi liquid model. Above 100 K, a polaronic hopping conduction mechanism with two parallel channels for current flow is indicated. Band structure calculations indicate decreasing density of states at Fermi level with pressure. In consonance with transition temperature suppression in conventional BCS low Tc superconductors, the pressure effect in SrxBi2Se3 is well accounted by pressure induced band broadening.

Abstract

Little is known about the social difficulties and healthcare needs of adult Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) patients in Japan, as well as the financial and physical stress experienced by their caregivers. This study aimed to clarify the social circumstances surrounding adult DMD patients and assess the degree of involvement of family members in their care and the associated economic burden of the disorder in Japan. Adult DMD patients were identified through the Registry of Muscular Dystrophy (Remudy) in Japan and invited to complete a questionnaire together with a caregiver. Data on health care use, quality of life, work status, informal care, and household expenses were collected to estimate the costs associated with DMD from social and caregiver household perspectives. In total, 234 (63.7%) of 367 adult DMD patients (mean age, 27.4 ± 6.0; range, 20-48 years) completed the questionnaire. Of these, 38 (21%) had developmental disorders (mental retardation, autism, and learning disorders), 57 (33%) experienced bullying in school, and 44 (77%) indicated the reason for bullying to be their physical handicap. Employment histories were noted by 72 (31%), although 23 (10%) lost their jobs mainly due to physical difficulties. Of the 234 patients, 164 (74%) lived with their relatives, and 78% of care time was supplied by family members, in particular, their mothers. The mean rate of care work provided by family members was 81%. Household income of families with an adult DMD patient was lower, whereas the rate of living with parent(s) and grandparent(s) was higher, in comparison with the general Japanese population. Adult DMD patients in Japan experience many social difficulties from childhood up to adulthood. As adults, many DMD patients experience bullying and workplace difficulties. Families were found to provide most of the care and financial support for DMD patients. Our results suggest the need to improve public patient care systems, including financial support, to address the physical and economic burdens of care for adult DMD patients in Japan. 50. Post-2015 Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction: A proposal for monitoring progress

Abstract

The Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDDR) will be held in Sendai City, Japan in March 2015, at which countries will adopt the post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction (hereafter informally called HFA2). UNISDR - in collaboration with leading experts in related fields - is developing a proposal for new system of DRM indicators, which will contribute to discussions on HFA2 and WCDRR. This initiative follows the fourth session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, held in May 2013 in which 3,500 participants from 172 countries called for an immediate start of work to be led by the UNISDR to develop targets and indicators to monitor the reduction of risk and the implementation of HFA2. The successor framework will address the challenges posed by increasing disaster risk. The development of effective monitoring system is crucial for building a successful post 2015 framework. The indicator system not only informs the need for continued monitoring on the key remaining issues of the HFA implementation, including the priority area of action 4 (reducing underlying risk factors), it will fundamentally shape the way international community understands and interprets the key challenges of disaster risk management agendas over the next 20-30 years. Also, the national level monitoring framework will likely inform local and community level DRM interventions, influencing the way we operationalize concepts such as disaster risk, vulnerability, resilience and its linkages with climate change and development goals. As the WCRR coincides with other important milestones of development and climate change agendas including the Sustainable Development Goals and the Post-Kyoto framework for climate change mitigation and adaptation, finding a holistic yet focused and manageable set of indicators - or what some refer to as the Holy Grail - has been a key focus of discussion surrounding the development of new monitoring system.
