Context. (3200) Phaethon is a ~5-km-diameter near-Earth asteroid with a small perihelion distance of 0.14 au and is the parent body of the Geminids. JAXA's DESTINY+ mission will fly by Phaethon in the near future. Aims. We aim to support the pre-flight planning for the DESTINY+ mission by performing a geophysical analysis on Phaethon's surface and near-surface environment utilizing the latest shape model from numerous observations. Methods. We employed the soft-sphere discrete element method code PKDGRAV to construct a "mascon" model of Phaethon and determine its gravity. We then computed the geopotential on Phaethon and derived various physical quantities related to its surface and near-surface dynamics. Results. We calculated geophysical quantities for the surface, including surface acceleration and slope. To assess whether surface objects could be launched off the surface, we computed the escape speed, return speed, Jacobi speed, and the location and stability of equilibrium points around Phaethon, and conducted a simple dynamical simulation of launched particles. Conclusions. Our results suggest that a large depression feature in the northern hemisphere could harbor exposed subsurface material and the freshest material on Phaethon. The negatively charged tin-vacancy (SnV-) center in diamond has emerged as a promising platform for quantum computing and quantum networks. To connect SnV- qubits in large networks, in-situ tuning and stabilization of their optical transitions are essential to overcome static and dynamic frequency offsets induced by the local environment. Here we report on the large-range optical frequency tuning of diamond SnV- centers using micro-electro-mechanically mediated strain control in photonic integrated waveguide devices. We realize a tuning range of >40 GHz, covering a major part of the inhomogeneous distribution. In addition, we employ real-time feedback on the strain environment to stabilize the resonant frequency and mitigate spectral wandering. These results provide a path for on-chip scaling of diamond SnV-based quantum networks.

Context. The Stardust flyby mission to Jupiter-family comet (JFC) 81P/Wild 2 (hereafter, 81P) captured its dense quasicircular depressions. Nevertheless, the formation mechanism remains a subject of ongoing debate. Aims. We aimed to study how cometary activity contributed to the formation and enlargement of these depressions by analyzing Stardust flyby images and ground-based observation data. Methods. We calculated the time-dependent water production rate of 81P inside the snow line (<3 au) and compared it with the observational data. In addition, we estimated the fallback debris mass using an observation-based model, where a dust ejection from 81P was considered to reproduce ground-based observations of the dust tail. We compared the total excavated volume of water and dust with the total depression volume derived using the 81P shape model. Results. We find that the total excavated volume after 81P was injected into the inner Solar System accounts for up to only 30 % of the depression volume. This insufficiency suggests that a large portion (>70 %) of the depressions had already existed before the comet was injected into the current orbit. In addition, we estimate the dust-to-ice mass ratio for 81P to be 2-14. Conclusions. Robot controllers are often optimised for a single robot in a single environment. This approach proves brittle, as such a controller will often fail to produce sensible behavior for a new morphology or environment. In comparison, animal gaits are robust and versatile. By observing animals, and attempting to extract general principles of locomotion from their movement, we aim to design a single decentralised controller applicable to diverse morphologies and environments. The controller implements the three components 1) undulation, 2) peristalsis, and 3) leg motion, which we believe are the essential elements in most animal gaits. The controller is tested on a variety of simulated centipede-like robots. The centipede is chosen as inspiration because it moves using both body contractions and legged locomotion. For a controller to work in qualitatively different settings, it must also be able to exhibit qualitatively different behaviors. We find that six different modes of locomotion emerge from our controller in response to environmental and morphological changes. We also find that different parts of the centipede model can exhibit different modes of locomotion, simultaneously, based on local morphological features. This controller can potentially aid in the design or evolution of robots, by quickly testing the potential of a morphology, or be used to get insights about underlying locomotion principles in the centipede.

Context. (4015) Wilson-Harrington (hereafter, WH) was discovered as a comet in 1949 but has a dynamical property consistent with that of a near-Earth asteroid. Although there is a report that the 1949 activity is associated with an ion tail, the cause of the activity has not yet been identified. Aims. This work aims to reveal the mysterious comet-like activity of the near-Earth asteroid. Methods. We conducted new polarimetric observations of WH from May 2022 to January 2023, reanalyses of the photographic plate images taken at the time of its discovery in 1949, and dust tail simulation modelings, where the dust terminal velocity and ejection epoch are taken into account. Results. We found that this object shows polarization characteristics similar to those of low-albedo asteroids. We derived the geometric albedo ranging from pV = 0.076 +- 0.010 to pV = 0.094 +- 0.018 from our polarimetry (the values vary depending on the data used for fitting and the slope-albedo relationship coefficients). In addition, the 1949 image showed an increase in brightness around the nucleus. Furthermore, we found that the color of the tail is consistent with sunlight, suggesting that the 1949 activity is associated with dust ejection. From the dust tail analysis, ~9 x 10^5 kg of material was ejected episodically at a low velocity equivalent to or even slower than the escape velocity. Conclusions. We propose a scar model to reproduce how double-strand breaks occur in the telomeric DNA damaged by the effect of the $\beta$-decay of tritium to helium. In this scar model, the two hydrogens bonded to the 5$^\prime$ carbon connecting the pent saccharides and phosphate are removed. Molecular dynamics simulations using the reactive force field are carried out for 10 cases for the telomeric DNA consisting of 16 base pairs (32 nucleotides). It results in double-strand breaks (DSBs) being observed for structures with more than 24 scars. For 16 scar cases, only single-strand breaks (SSB) are observed. Moreover, in the case of $\left\{16, 0 \right\}$ and $\left\{ 0, 16 \right\},$ where only one of the strands had scars, SSB occurs only in the scarred strand. Secondly, in the $\left\{16, 8 \right\}$ and $\left\{ 8, 16 \right\}$ cases, DSBs occurs. Therefore, we conclude that the following conditions are necessary for DSBs:(i) Scars must occur on both the L and R strands. (ii) A large number of scars (24 or more) must occur in close proximity to each other.

We study the stabilization of a twisted modulus in Type IIB flux compactifications on a mirror of the rigid Calabi-Yau threefold. By analyzing the effective action of twisted and untwisted moduli, we find that three-form fluxes satisfying the tadpole cancellation conditions lead to supersymmetric AdS vacua. Context. Ch-type asteroids are distinctive among other dark asteroids in that they exhibit deep negative polarization branches (NPBs). Nevertheless, the physical and compositional properties that cause their polarimetric distinctiveness are less investigated. Aims. We aim to investigate the polarimetric uniqueness of Ch-type asteroids by making databases of various observational quantities (i.e., spectroscopic and photometric properties as well as polarimetric ones) of dark asteroids.Methods. We conducted an intensive polarimetric survey of 52 dark asteroids (including 31 Ch-type asteroids) in the R$_\mathrm{C}$-band to increase the size of polarimetric samples. The observed data are compiled with previous polarimetric, spectroscopic, and photometric archival data to find their correlations. Results. We find remarkable correlations between these observed quantities, particularly the depth of NPBs and their spectroscopic features associated with the hydrated minerals. The amplitude of the opposition effect in photometric properties also shows correlations with polarimetric and spectral properties. However, these observed quantities do not show noticeable correlations with the geometric albedo, thermal inertia, and diameter of asteroids. Conclusions. Based on the observational evidence, we arrive at our conclusion that the submicrometer-sized structures (fibrous or flaky puff pastry-like structures in phyllosilicates) in the regolith particles could contribute to the distinctive NPBs of hydrated asteroids., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures (Accepted for the publication of Astronomy and Astrophysics on May 30, 2024)

The asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) is a paradigmatic driven-diffusive system that describes the asymmetric diffusion of particles with hardcore interactions in a lattice. Although the ASEP is known as an exactly solvable model, most exact results are limited to one-dimensional systems. Recently, the exact steady state in the multi-dimensional ASEP has been proposed [1]. The research focused on the situation where the number of particles is conserved. In this paper, we consider the two-dimensional ASEP with the attachment and detachment of particles (ASEP-LK), where particle number conservation is violated. By employing the result in Ref. Haptic displays play an important role in enhancing the sense of presence in VR and telepresence. Displaying the tactile properties of fabrics has potential in the fashion industry, but there are difficulties in dynamically displaying different types of tactile sensations while maintaining their flexible properties. The vibrotactile stimulation of fabrics is an important element in the tactile properties of fabrics, as it greatly affects the way a garment feels when rubbed against the skin. To dynamically change the vibrotactile stimuli, many studies have used mechanical actuators. However, when combined with fabric, the soft properties of the fabric are compromised by the stiffness of the actuator. In addition, because the vibration generated by such actuators is applied to a single point, it is not possible to provide a uniform tactile sensation over the entire surface of the fabric, resulting in an uneven tactile sensation. In this study, we propose a Pinching Tactile Display: a conductive cloth that changes the tactile sensation by controlling electrostatic adsorption. By controlling the voltage and frequency applied to the conductive cloth, different tactile sensations can be dynamically generated. This makes it possible to create a tactile device in which tactile sensations are applied to the entire fabric while maintaining the thin and soft characteristics of the fabric. As a result, users could experiment with tactile sensations by picking up and rubbing the fabric in the same way they normally touch it. We conducted measurements of $K^- + {^3{\rm He}} \to \pi \!Y \!N + N'$ reactions using a $1~{\rm GeV}/c$ $K^-$-beam, with the objective of understanding the broad decay width of $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ (approximately twice as broad as that of $\Lambda(1405)$ considered to be the $\bar{K} \!N$ quasi-bound state). We successfully reproduced distributions of the $\pi \! Y \! N$ invariant mass and momentum transfer for $\pi \! Y \! N$ using model fitting functions for $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ formation and quasi-free $\bar{K}$ absorption (${\rm QF}_{\bar{K}-{\rm abs}}$) processes. The model can describe the experimental data quite well, and four $\bar{K} \! N \! N \to \pi \! Y \! N $ cross-sections were obtained. The results indicate that mesonic decay is the dominant decay branch of $\bar{K} \! N \! N$. The results also suggest that $\Gamma_{\pi \Lambda N} \sim \Gamma_{\pi \Sigma N}$, which indicates that the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=1$ absorption channel, in addition to the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=0$ absorption channel, substantially contribute to the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ decay, making the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ state approximately twice as unstable as $\Lambda$(1405).

We study the modular symmetry in heterotic string theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds. In particular, we examine whether moduli-dependent holomorphic Yukawa couplings are described by modular forms in the context of heterotic string theory with standard embedding. We find that $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ modular symmetry emerges in asymptotic regions of the Calabi-Yau moduli space. The instanton-corrected holomorphic Yukawa couplings are then given by modular forms under $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ or its congruence subgroups such as $\Gamma_0(3)$ and $\Gamma_0(4)$. In addition to the modular symmetry, it turns out that another coupling selection rule controls the structure of holomorphic Yukawa couplings. Furthermore, the coexistence of both the positive and negative modular weights for matter fields leads to a hierarchical structure of matter field K\"ahler metric. Thus, these holomorphic modular forms and the matter field K\"ahler metric play an important role in realizing a hierarchical structure of physical Yukawa couplings., Comment: 30 pages

In-car Voice Assistants (VAs) play an increasingly critical role in automotive user interface design. However, existing VAs primarily perform simple 'query-answer' tasks, limiting their ability to sustain drivers' long-term attention. In this study, we investigate the effectiveness of an in-car Robot Assistant (RA) that offers functionalities beyond voice interaction. We aim to answer the question: How does the presence of a social robot impact user experience in real driving scenarios? Our study begins with a user survey to understand perspectives on in-car VAs and their influence on driving experiences. We then conduct non-driving and on-road experiments with selected participants to assess user experiences with an RA. Additionally, we conduct subjective ratings to evaluate user perceptions of the RA's personality, which is crucial for robot design. We also explore potential concerns regarding ethical risks. Context. Sunlight scattered from the surface of an airless body is generally partially polarized, and the corresponding polarization state includes information about the scattering surface, such as albedo, surface grain sizes, composition, and taxonomic types. Aims. We conducted polarimetry of two large airless bodies, the Dawn mission targets (1) Ceres and (4) Vesta, in the near-infrared region. We further investigated the change in the polarimetric phase curves over the wavelengths expected from previous works. Methods. We used the Nishiharima Infrared Camera (NIC) installed at the Nishi-Harima Astronomical Observatory (NHAO) to observe these objects at multiple geometric configurations in the J, H, and $\mathrm{K_s}$ bands ($ \lambda \sim 1.2\mathrm{-}2.3 \mathrm{\mu m} $). Results. Polarimetric parameters were determined and compared with previously reported experimental results. In particular, Vesta exhibits a characteristic change in the negative polarization branch as the wavelength increases to the $\mathrm{K_s}$ band, which we interpret as an indication of the dominant existence of $D \sim 10\mathrm{-}20 \mathrm{\mu m}$ particles. Our approach is supported by empirical reasoning and coincides well with an independent, theory-driven approach based on thermal modeling. Conclusions. This work demonstrates how near-infrared polarimetry can be utilized to quantitatively determine the particle size of airless objects. This work explores characteristics of the negative polarization branch (NPB), which occurs in scattered light from rough surfaces, with particular focus on the effects of fine particles. Factors such as albedo, compression, roughness, and the refractive index are considered to determine their influence on the NPB. This study compiles experimental data and lunar observations to derive insights from a wide array of literature. Employing our proposed methodology, we estimate the representative grain sizes on the lunar surface to be $D \sim 1 \mathrm{-} 2 \mathrm{\mu m}$, with $D \lesssim 2 \mathrm{-} 4 \mathrm{\mu m}$, consistent with observed grain size frequency distributions in laboratory settings for lunar fines. Considering Mars, we propose that the finest particles are likely lacking ($D\gg 10 \mathrm{\mu m}$), which matches previous estimations. This study highlights the potential of multiwavelength, particularly near-infrared, polarimetry for precisely gauging small particles on airless celestial bodies. Context: Various ideas have been proposed to explain the formation of the Geminid meteoroid stream from the asteroid (3200) Phaethon. However, little has been studied about the Geminid formation based on the assumption that mass ejection happened from this asteroid via rotational instability. Aims: Here, we present the first dynamical study of the Geminid formation, taking account of low-velocity mass ejection as a result of Phaethon's rotational instability. Methods: We conducted numerical simulations for 1 mm and 1 cm particles ejected in a wide range of ejection epochs (10$^3$--10$^5$ years ago). We computed the minimum orbital intersecting distance (MOID) of the dust particles as the realistic condition, that is, the Earth's radius and the Earth-Moon distance to be observed as the Geminid meteoroid stream. Results: We found that the low-velocity ejection model produced the Geminid-like meteoroid stream when the dust particles were ejected more than $\sim$2,000 years ago. In this case, close encounters with terrestrial planets would transport some dust particles from the Phaethon orbit (the current MOID is as large as $\sim$460 Earth radius) to the Earth-intersecting orbits. The optimal ejection epoch and the estimated mass were 18\,000 years ago and $\sim 10^{10} - 10^{14}$ g (<0.1 \% of the Phaethon mass). Conclusions: Our results suggest that the JAXA's DESTINY\textsuperscript{+} mission has the potential to find evidence of recent rotational instability recorded on the Phaethon's surface., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We study the well-known type IIA intersecting D-brane models on the $T^6/(\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}'_2)$ orientifold via a machine-learning approach. We apply several autoencoder models with and without positional encoding to the D6-brane configurations satisfying certain concrete models described in arXiv:hep-th/0510170 and attempt to extract some features which the configurations possess. We observe that the configurations cluster in two-dimensional latent layers of the autoencoder models and analyze which physical quantities are relevant to the clustering. As a result, it is found that tadpole charges of hidden D6-branes characterize the clustering. We expect that there is another important factor because a checkerboard pattern in two-dimensional latent layers is observed in the clustering., Comment: 41 pages, 57 figures

We study structures of solutions for SUSY Minkowski F-term equations on two toroidal orientifolds with $h^{2, 1} = 1$. Following our previous study \cite{Ishiguro:2020tmo}, with fixed upper bounds of a flux D3-brane charge $N_{\rm flux}$, we obtain a whole Landscape and a distribution of degeneracies of physically-distinct solutions for each case. In contrast to our previous study, we consider a non-factorizable toroidal orientifold and its Landscape on which $SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$ is violated into a certain congruence subgroup, as it had been known in past studies. We find that it is not the entire duality group that a complex-structure modulus $U$ enjoys but its outer semi-direct product with a "scaling" outer automorphism group. The fundamental region is enlarged to include the $|U| < 1$ region. In addition, we find that high degeneracy is observed at an elliptic point, not of $SL(2, Z)$ but of the outer automorphism group. Furthermore, $\mathbb{Z}_2$-enhanced symmetry is realized on the elliptic point. The outer automorphism group is exceptional in the sense that it is consistent with a symplectic basis transformation of background three-cycles, as opposed to the outer automorphism group of $SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$. We study flavor phenomenologies in a basis of a double covering of modular $A_4$ group with a hidden $SU(2)$ symmetry, in which we work on regions at nearby two fixed points and three special points. These special points of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ moduli space are statistically favored in flux compactifications of Type IIB string theory. Neutrino masses are approximately obtained by using the seesaw mechanism due to our two additional symmetries. We perform chi square numerical analysis for each of the fixed/special points in the normal and inverted hierarchies and demonstrate predictions for each case. Then, we briefly discuss the possible signature of hidden gauge bosons at collider experiments from the hidden $SU(2)$ symmetry., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

Studying small near-Earth asteroids is important to understand their dynamical histories and origins as well as to mitigate the damage of the asteroid impact to the Earth. We report the results of multicolor photometry of the tiny near-Earth asteroid 2015 RN$_{35}$ using the 3.8 m Seimei telescope in Japan and the TRAPPIST-South telescope in Chile over 17 nights in 2022 December and 2023 January. We observed 2015 RN$_{35}$ across a wide range of phase angles from 2$^{\circ}$ to 30$^{\circ}$ in the $g$, $r$, $i$, and $z$ bands in the Pan-STARRS system. These lightcurves show that 2015 RN$_{35}$ is in a non-principal axis spin state with two characteristic periods of $1149.7\pm0.3$ s and $896.01\pm0.01$ s. We found that a slope of a visible spectrum of 2015 RN$_{35}$ is as red as asteroid (269) Justitia, one of the very red objects in the main belt, which indicates that 2015 RN$_{35}$ can be classified as an A- or Z-type asteroid. In conjunction with the shallow slope of the phase curve, we suppose that 2015 RN$_{35}$ is a high-albedo A-type asteroid. We demonstrated that surface properties of tiny asteroids could be well constrained by intensive observations across a wide range of phase angles. 2015 RN$_{35}$ is a possible mission accessible A-type near-Earth asteroid with a small $\Delta v$ of 11.801 km s$^{-1}$ in the launch window between 2030 and 2035., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal.
