Abstract

We carried out a study of neutrino detection at the experimental fast reactor JOYO using a 0.76 tons gadolinium loaded liquid scintillator detector. The detector was set up on the ground level at 24.3m from the JOYO reactor core of 140MW thermal power. The measured neutrino event rate from reactor on-off comparison was 1.11\pm1.24(stat.)\pm0.46(syst.)events/day. Although the statistical significance of the measurement was not enough, the background in such a compact detector at the ground level was studied in detail and MC simulation was found to describe the data well. Abstract

The rare decay K0(L) --> pi0 pi0 nu nu-bar was studied with the E391a detector at the KEK 12-GeV proton synchrotron. Based on 9.4 x 10^9 K0L decays, an upper limit of 8.1 x 10^{-7} was obtained for the branching fraction at 90% confidence level. We also set a limit on the K0(L) --> pi0 pi0 X (X --> invisible particles) process; the limit on the branching fraction varied from 7.0 x 10^{-7} to 4.0 x 10^{-5} for the mass of X ranging from 50 MeV/c^2 to 200 MeV/c^2., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We performed a search for the decay $K_L^0 \rightarrow 3\gamma$ with the E391a detector at KEK. In the data accumulated in 2005, no event was observed in the signal region. Based on the assumption of $K_L^0 \rightarrow 3\gamma$ proceeding via parity-violation, we obtained the single event sensitivity to be $(3.23\pm0.14)\times10^{-8}$, and set an upper limit on the branching ratio to be $7.4\times10^{-8}$ at the 90% confidence level. This is a factor of 3.2 improvement compared to the previous results. The results of $K_L^0 \rightarrow 3\gamma$ proceeding via parity-conservation were also presented in this paper.

Abstract

The development of BiPo detectors is dedicated to the measurement of extremely high radiopurity in $^{208}$Tl and $^{214}$Bi for the SuperNEMO double beta decay source foils. A modular prototype, called BiPo-1, with 0.8 $m^2$ of sensitive surface area, has been running in the Modane Underground Laboratory since February, 2008. The goal of BiPo-1 is to measure the different components of the background and in particular the surface radiopurity of the plastic scintillators that make up the detector. The first phase of data collection has been dedicated to the measurement of the radiopurity in $^{208}$Tl. After more than one year of background measurement, a surface activity of the scintillators of $\mathcal{A}$($^{208}$Tl) $=$ 1.5 $\mu$Bq/m$^2$ is reported here. Given this level of background, a larger BiPo detector having 12 m$^2$ of active surface area, is able to qualify the radiopurity of the SuperNEMO selenium double beta decay foils with the required sensitivity of $\mathcal{A}$($^{208}$Tl) $<$ 2 $\mu$Bq/kg (90% C.L.) with a six month measurement., Comment: 24 pages, submitted to N.I.M. Abstract

We have constructed a GEANT4-based detailed software model of photon transport in plastic scintillator blocks and have used it to study the NEMO-3 and SuperNEMO calorimeters employed in experiments designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay. We compare our simulations to measurements using conversion electrons from a calibration source of $\rm ^{207}Bi$ and show that the agreement is improved if wavelength-dependent properties of the calorimeter are taken into account. Abstract

We performed a search for a light pseudoscalar particle $X$ in the decay $K_L^0->pi0pi0X$, $X->\gamma\gamma$ with the E391a detector at KEK. Such a particle with a mass of 214.3 MeV/$c^2$ was suggested by the HyperCP experiment. We found no evidence for $X$ and set an upper limit on the product branching ratio for $K_L^0->pi0pi0X$, $X->\gamma\gamma$ of $2.4 \times 10^{-7}$ at the 90% confidence level. Upper limits on the branching ratios in the mass region of $X$ from 194.3 to 219.3 MeV/$c^2$ are also presented., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

On-site underground background measurements were performed for the planned reactor-neutrino oscillation experiment KASKA at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station in Niigata, Japan. A small-diameter boring hole was excavated down to 70m underground level, and a detector unit for $\gamma$-ray and cosmic-muon measurements was placed at various depths to take data. The data were analyzed to obtain abundance of natural radioactive elements in the surrounding soil and rates of cosmic muons that penetrate the overburden. Abstract

One of the current most-demanded experiments in neutrino physics is to measure the last mixing angle theta_13. KASKA is an experiment to detect new type of reactor neutrino oscillation and to measure sin^2 2theta_13 accurately using the world's most powerful nuclear reactor complex; Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station. KASKA utilizes near and far detectors of identical structure at nearly optimized baselines and underground depths to cancel most of the systematics and reduce backgrounds. The expected sensitivity is sin^2 2theta_13~0.015, which is 10 times better sensitivity than the current upper limit measured by CHOOZ reactor experiment. Extension of KASKA project has potential to accurately measure other anti-nu_e oscillation parameters. Intense and precisely known neutrino flux measured by the KASKA-theta_13 phase can be used to pin down sin^2 2theta_12 at a baseline ~50km and to measure Dm^2_13 for the first time at a baseline ~5km. 13. Techno-economic analysis on recent heterogeneous catalysts for ammonia synthesis

Abstract

The economic performance of recently developed catalysts for ammonia synthesis, Ru/Ca(NH2)2 and Ru/Pr2O3, are evaluated by process simulation using ASPEN Plus. The results show that catalyst costs are high due to expensive ruthenium; thus, the catalysts' lifetime significantly influences the total cost. Besides, the new catalysts are advantageous when the electricity cost is high and the production scale is small, which are the characteristics of the case in which renewable energy is employed. Finally, the future direction of the catalyst developments is discussed.

14. High inorganic content with percolated structure in pore-filling membrane: Platform for functional membranes based on zirconium phosphate

Abstract

Organic-inorganic composite membranes are used in various applications, such as proton-conducting electrolyte membranes for PEMFCs. In this study, we filled a polyethylene porous substrate with only but plenty of inorganics (around 48 wt.%), zirconium acetylacetonate, the precursor of zirconium phosphate (ZrP)-based inorganics (AcAc-Zr). It was confirmed that the AcAc-Zr in the substrate was converted into ZrP derivatives in situ, keeping the high contents. TEM-EDS analysis revealed that the pores were continuously filled with ZrP, indicating that ZrP was percolated due to the high contents and the original structure of the porous substrate. The conductivities of these ZrP, ZrHEDP, and ZrATMP films were sufficiently high: on the order of 1 mS cm–1 (80°C and 95% relative humidity condition).

Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis can alter gait variability. However, few studies have compared the temporal factors of the gait cycle between patients with knee osteoarthritis and healthy subjects. Furthermore, no studies have investigated the relationship between gait variability and potential contributing factors (knee joint functions such as muscle strength) in knee osteoarthritis. The first objective of this study was to compare gait cycle variability between female patients with knee osteoarthritis and healthy elderly women to determine gait characteristics in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The second objective was to examine whether gait cycle variability in knee osteoarthritis is associated with potential contributing factors. Twenty-four female patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis and 12 healthy elderly women participated. Gait cycle variability (coefficient of variation of gait cycle time), knee extension range of motion, knee extension strength, 5-meter walk test, Timed Up & Go Test, and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index were measured. All assessment results were compared between the knee osteoarthritis and healthy groups. Gait cycle variability was significantly higher in the knee osteoarthritis group (3.2%±1.5%) compared to the healthy group (2.1%±0.7%). A significant positive correlation was found between the gait cycle variability and 5-meter walk test (r=0.46) and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (r=0.43). The gait of patients with knee osteoarthritis may be more unstable than that of healthy individuals. In addition, unstable gait may be associated with gait speed and quality of life. Therefore, we believe that rehabilitation to improve unstable gait can enhance the quality of life of patients with knee osteoarthritis.

An earlier report by Mccacci and Rocchetti showed a significant, weak, and positive correlation between Evening type as measured by the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire and Type A personality as measured by the Jenkins Activity Survey and the Borther Type A Scale in italian college students, The present study of 503 Japanese college students yielded a significant and weakly negative correlation. The bases for the different results were discussed in a psychophysiological context.

Abstract

Bulk Fe/Ag multilayers with layer thickness of approximately 10 nm were successfully fabricated through repeated press-rolling directly from a macroscopic stack of metal sheets. The press-rolled multilayers showed giant magnetoresistance of 13% in the current perpendicular to the plane geometry and 4% in the current in the plane geometry at 5 K.

Abstract

Partially hydrolysed guar gum (PHGG) is a water-soluble dietary fibre that is non-digestible in the upper gastrointestinal tract. It is believed that PHGG benefits the health of hosts by altering the colonic microbiota and stimulating short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production. However, it remains unclear which bacteria ferment PHGG in the human large intestine. In this study, the effect of PHGG on faecal bacteria was analysed to specify the bacteria that contribute to the fermentation of PHGG in the human large intestine. Ten healthy volunteers consumed PHGG (6 g/day) for 2 weeks. Faeces were collected at 2 weeks prior to consumption, at the end of 2 weeks of consumption, and 2 weeks after consumption of PHGG. Bacterial DNA was extracted from these collected faeces and subjected to real-time PCR using bacterial group- or species-specific primers. The copy number of the butyryl-CoA CoA-transferase gene and the 16S rRNA gene copy numbers of Bifidobacterium, the Clostridium coccoides group, the Roseburia/ Eubacterium rectale group, Eubacterium hallii, and butyrate-producing bacterium strain SS2/1 were significantly increased by the intake of PHGG. Other bacteria and bacterial groups were not significantly influenced by the intake of PHGG. It was believed that the Roseburia/E. rectale group bacteria, Bifidobacterium, the lactate-utilising, butyrate-producing bacteria, E. hallii and bacterium strain SS2/1, would contribute to the fermentation of PHGG in the human large intestine. PHGG may benefit health by stimulating Bifidobacterium and butyrate-producing bacteria in the human large intestine.

Abstract

Highly conserved TREX-mediated mRNA export is emerging as a key pathway in neuronal development and differentiation. TREX subunit variants cause neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) by interfering with mRNA export from the cell nucleus to the cytoplasm. Previously we implicated four missense variants in the X-linked THOC2 gene in intellectual disability (ID). We now report an additional six affected individuals from five unrelated families with two de novo and three maternally inherited pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in THOC2 extending the genotypic and phenotypic spectrum. These comprise three rare missense THOC2 variants that affect evolutionarily conserved amino acid residues and reduce protein stability and two with canonical splice-site THOC2 variants that result in C-terminally truncated THOC2 proteins. We present detailed clinical assessment and functional studies on a de novo variant in a female with an epileptic encephalopathy and discuss an additional four families with rare variants in THOC2 with supportive evidence for pathogenicity. Severe neurocognitive features, including movement and seizure disorders, were observed in this cohort. Taken together our data show that even subtle alterations to the canonical molecular pathways such as mRNA export, otherwise essential for cellular life, can be compatible with life, but lead to NDDs in humans.
