Abstract

Novel conducting polymers consisting of triphenylamine repeat units, i.e., poly(4,4′,4″-triphenylamine) (PTPA-NET), poly(4,4′-triphenylamine) (PTPA-H) and poly(4,4′-(4″-methyl)triphenylamine) (PTPA-ME), were synthesized by nickel-catalyzed polycondensation of Grignard reagents from the corresponding trihalogeno- or dihalogenotriphenylamine derivatives. PTPA-NET is insoluble and has good thermal stability. PTPA-H and PTPA-ME are soluble and can be easily processed. A thin film of PTPA-H can be made insoluble by an iodine-doping cross-linking reaction. These polymers have very stable chemically and electrochemically p-doped (oxidized) states and their electrical conductivity is in the order of 1 S cm −1 with iodine doping. With electrochemical doping, the maximum conductivity was observed at a medium doping level. The oxidation potentials of the polymers range from 0.8 to 1.0 V versus Ag/AgCl.

Abstract

To examine fundamental properties of conducting organic polymer, poly(4,4′-triphenylamine) (PTPA-H), cyclic voltammetric, spectroscopic and ESR measurements for PTPA-H and a series of triphenylamine oligomers were carried out. Data obtained reveal that benzidine units of PTPA-H are oxidized almost independently and that the electrical transport mechanism of p-doped PTPA-H is the hole hopping among its benzidine units.

25. Spectroscopic and Kinetic Studies on Volume Expansion Processes of Photoresponsive Polyacrylamide Microgels in Water

Abstract

Photostimulated volume expansion of polyacrylamide microgels (initial radius = 11—235 μm) bearing triphenylmethyl cyanide moieties (AAm-TPMCN) in water was studied on the basis of simultaneous measurements of the degree of ionic dissociation (α) of TPMCN to TPM+(triphenylmethyl cation) and the gel radius. The time profile of the radius change, r(t), was analyzed by a convolution relation between r(t) and the time course of α(α(t)). The characteristic time constants of the volume change, related to the cooperative diffusion coefficient of the gel network, were determined for AAm-TPMCN gels with various radii. The faster photoresponse time of the volume change for the smaller AAm-TPMCN gel was explained in terms of the diffusion theory of gel networks in water.
