Abstract

土壌・地下水汚染対策工法の反応透過壁工法(反応性バリア)を対象として，その設計パラメータを平面2次元浸透流解析により評価した。その結果に基づき，汚染サイトの特性に応じた最適な反応透過壁構造を見出すことができる設計手法を提案した。汚染サイトを正常に浄化することのできる条件を満たし，なおかつ施工費用が最小になるという視点から最適な反応透過壁構造を議論した。, Performance of permeable reactive barriers for contaminated groundwater remediation was evaluated using FEM seepage analysis. The retention time and the capture zone were calculated on the funnel-and-gate systems (FGSs) having different geometries, in order to evaluate the effects of these geometries on the FGSs performance. Based on the calculated results, costs associated with the installation of funnel-and-gate systems satisfying a certain performance were obtained to estimate the cost-effective geometry. Finally, optimum design flow for FGS was proposed.

28. Effects of water content distribution on hydraulic conductivity of prehydrated GCLS against calcium chloride solutions

Abstract

When geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) are applied as bottom liners at waste containment facilities, they are naturally prehydrated by absorbing moisture in the underlying base layers. In order to evaluate the effects of cations contained in waste leachates, this study investigated the effects of the water content distribution of the GCLs prehydrated with actual soils on their hydraulic conductivities against CaCl2 solutions. The "prehydration tests", which were conducted prior to the hydraulic conductivity tests, showed that the water content distribution of the prehydrated GCLs depends on the properties of the GCLs and the base layers. In particular, drastic differences between GCLs with powdered ben-tonite and GCLs with granular bentonite were observed in the prehydration water content and its distribution. Prehydrated GCLs with powdered bentonite had a higher water content and a more homogenous distribution than those with granular bentonite. The hydraulic conductivity tests showed that most of the prehydrated GCLs exhibit a low hydraulic conductivity of k ≈1.0 x 10-8cm/s against CaCl2 solutions with 0.1-0.5 M. However, GCLs with granular bentonite may be difficult to homogeneously prehydrate and exhibit an unstable hydraulic conductivity, which varies from A: = 2.9x 10-9cm/s to k= 1.5 x 10-6 cm/s. The homogeneity of the water content distribution has been consi-dered an important factor to obtain a required barrier performance under prehydration conditions, which are naturally generated in actual sites.

Abstract

The long-term safety management of hazardous substances is essential to the development of an environmentally sound resource circulation society. To achieve this, engineering measures to attenuate environmental risks in the isolation and sequestration of hazardous heavy metals are reviewed. From the standpoint of the isolation and sequestration of heavy metals from resource circulation, we assess the challenges in implementing immobilization technologies, constructing updated isolation structures, and controlling environmental conditions. It is also focused intensively on the (bio) chemical transformation behavior of heavy metals and its effect on the migration of the transformed materials in the environment. The contributions of solubilized and gasified metal components to emission into the environment are considered. The obtained results underscore the necessity of multiple barriers to retard and attenuate the migration of hazardous heavy metals. Innovative schemes for the isolation and sequestration of heavy metals will lead to higher levels of safety and environmentally sound resource circulation.
