Background and Objectives: Urine serves as a vital diagnostic fluid, and urine cytology analysis plays a crucial role in identifying urinary system illnesses such as bladder cancer and kidney stones. The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology establishes a uniform method for diagnosing urinary tract cancer. This study aimed to provide valuable insights that can inform diagnostic strategies related to kidney stones and ultimately improve patient outcomes via the early detection of the cellular changes associated with kidney stones and their relation to kidney function tests. Materials and Methods: A comparative study was conducted and comprised two groups: group 1, consisting of 50 patients diagnosed with kidney stones, and group 2, comprising 50 patients diagnosed with other kidney diseases. Renal function tests and urinalysis (via the PAP staining of urine cellular deposits to detect nuclear changes) were performed, and the results were analyzed. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in urinary red blood cells, white blood cells, and nuclear reactive atypical changes in urinary sediments of kidney stone patients compared to the patients without stones, while there was a decrease in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). eGFR showed a 96.7% specificity in detecting cases with nuclear reactive atypia. Conclusions: eGFR emerges as a reliable diagnostic marker for the comprehensive assessment of kidney stones, particularly when associated with nuclear atypia. The significant correlation between the indicators of chronic kidney disease, such as decreased eGFR, and the presence of kidney stones emphasizes the urgent need for efficient diagnostic practices. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and melatonin were reported to exert protective effects on testicular tissues. Thus, this study aimed to determine which of these is more efficient against obesity-induced testicular dysfunction in albino rats. A total of 32 adult male rats (195 [+ or -] 10 g) were divided into four groups: control, obese rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD), HFD+NAC (150 mg/kg per day, i.p.) and HFD+melatonin (10 mg/kg per day, i.p.), for 5 weeks. Testes and epididymis were weighed. Lipid profile, pituitary-testicular hormones, tumor necrosis factor [alpha] (TNF[alpha]), epididymal sperm parameters, testicular oxidantanti-oxidant system, testicular and the epididymal histopathology and immunohistochemical localization for androgen receptors (AR) and Bax reaction were analyzed. Administration of NAC or melatonin significantly improved the lipid parameters, gonadal hormones, TNF[alpha] level, sperm count and abnormal morphology, oxidant-antioxidant system and the absolute testicular and epididymal mass with an enhancement of testicular architecture, AR expression and apoptosis as compared with that in the obese group. Additionally, as compared with the NAC group, the melatonin group had significantly reduced body mass index, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and TNF[alpha] and increased testosterone, sperm count, motility, superoxide dismutase activity, mitigated histomorphometrical changes, Bax expression, and increased testicular AR expression. Therefore, melatonin was more efficient than NAC in affording fortification against HFD-induced testicular dysfunction. On a rapporte que la N-acetylcysteine (NAC) et la melatonine exercent des effets protecteurs sur les tissus testiculaires. Par consequent, cette etude visait a etablir laquelle des deux est la plus efficace contre le dysfonctionnement testiculaire engendre par l'obesite chez le rat albinos. Nous avons reparti au total 32 rats adultes males (195 [+ or -] 10 g) dans 4 groupes : temoin, rats obeses auxquels etait administre un regime alimentaire a haute teneur en matieres grasses (HMG), HMG + NAC (150 mg/kg/j, i.p.) et HMG + melatonine (10 mg/kg/j, i.p.) sur 5 semaines. Nous avons pese les testicules et les epididymes. Nous avons analyse le profil lipidique, les hormones pituito-testiculaires, le facteur de necrose tumorale [alpha] (TNF[alpha]), les parametres du sperme de l'epididyme, le systeme oxydant/antioxydant testiculaire ainsi que l'histopathologie du testicule et de l'epididyme; nous avons analyse la localisation immunohistochimique des recepteurs androgeniques (RA) et la reaction Bax. L'administration de NAC ou de melatonine permettait d'obtenir des ameliorations notables en matiere de parametres lipidiques, d'hormones gonadiques, de taux de TNF[alpha], du nombre de spermatozoides et de leur morphologie, du systeme oxydant/antioxydant ainsi que de la masse absolue des testicules et des epididymes, avec des ameliorations quant a l'architecture des testicules, a l'expression des RA et a l'apoptose comparativement au groupe obese. De plus, comparativement au groupe NAC, les animaux du groupe melatonine presentaient un abaissement notable de l'IMC, du cholesterol total, des triglycerides et de TNF[alpha] avec une hausse de la testosterone, du nombre de spermatozoides, de leur motilite, de l'activite de la superoxyde dismutase ainsi qu'une attenuation des variations histomorphometriques, de l'expression de Bax, et qu'une augmentation de l'expression des RA testiculaires. Bio-fertilizers are the most important and effective method used to reduce the quantities of chemical fertilizers consumed and reduce dependence on them in agricultural production to avoid their harmful effects on the environment and public health as well as reduce the cost of agricultural production in light of increasing pollution and under adverse conditions for production and climate change. A bio-fertilizer depends primarily on the use of beneficial microorganisms such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) to improve the uptake of nutrients, improve plant growth, productivity, and grain yield. Crop production faces many challenges, and drought is one of the majority of the significant factors limiting crop production worldwide, especially in semi-arid regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of AMF and phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB), plus three rates of the recommended dose of phosphorus (RDP) fertilizer on yield, yield components, and nutrients uptake, in addition to evaluating the beneficial effects of these combinations to develop Phosphorus (P) management under three levels of irrigation water, i.e., three irrigations (normal or well-watered), two irrigations (moderate drought), and one irrigation (severe drought) on barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). The results showed that the treatment with AMF bio-fertilizer yielded the highest values of plant height, spike length, spike weight, number of grains/spike, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield, and harvest index. Moreover, the grain and straw uptake of nitrogen (N), P, and potassium (K) (kg ha−1) in the two seasons under the three levels of irrigation, respectively, were superior followed by the inoculation by PSB. While the treatment without bio-fertilizer yielded the lowest values of these traits of barley, the treatment with bio-fertilizer yielded the increased percentage of the grain yield by 17.27%, 17.33% with applying AMF, and 10.31%, 10.40% with treatment by PSB. Treatment with AMF or PSB (Phosphorien), plus rates of phosphorus fertilizer under conditions of irrigation water shortage, whether irrigation was performed once or twice, led to an increase in grain yield and other characteristics compared to the same fertilization rates without inoculation. The results of this study showed that the use of bio-fertilizers led to an increase in plant tolerance to drought stress, and this was demonstrated by an increase in various traits with the use of treatments that include bio-fertilizers. Therefore, it is suggested to inoculate the seeds with AMF or PSB plus adding phosphate fertilizers at the recommended dose under drought conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Chronic endometritis (CE) is a persistent inflammation of the uterine lining. Although it has a minimal clinical presentation, CE adversely affects the reproductive ability of women. The aims of this study were to detect pathological endometrial patterns in D&C biopsies and to evaluate chronic endometritis in patients living in a high-altitude area (1800 m above sea level) in order to determine the clinical pathological features and prevalence. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study conducted at King Faisal Maternity Hospital included 100 samples of D&C biopsies from women complaining of various gynecological symptoms not due to gestational causes. The biopsies underwent tissue processing, H&E staining, and CD138 detection. Blood samples were taken for serological detection of infectious diseases, complete blood count, and chemical parameters. Results: The mean age of women in the study with CE was 48.5 ± 8.5 years, and that of those without CE was 46.9 ± 9.7 years. The most common complaints were abnormal uterine bleeding, accounting for 83%. CE was present in 8% of cases, and there was a nonsignificant difference in hematological parameters between women with CE and those with other pathological diagnoses. There were also nonsignificant differences in chemical parameters, except for FSH and LH levels, which showed a significant difference, with p-values of 0.05 and 0.02, respectively. It can be concluded that the most common gynecological complaint of women in this study was abnormal uterine bleeding. Conclusions: The most commonly diagnosed pathological endometrial disorder in D&C biopsies was disordered proliferative endometrium, followed by endometrial polyps and endometrial hyperplasia. All of these are usually associated with hormonal disturbance, which appeared to be very common in the women in this study. Objective: Hypoxia is one of the principal causes of renal diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Nigella sativa on dinitrophenol (DNP)-induced hypoxia renal damage in rats. Methods: Forty adult male rats were incorporated in this study. The rats were divided into four groups: control group, N. sativa group, DNP hypoxic group, and DNP + N. sativa group receiving N. sativa (400 mg/kg body weight). Serum and renal tissue erythropoietin (EPO) hormone and hypoxia-inducible factor-2α (HIF-2α) levels were measured. Renal oxidative stress biomarkers, inflammatory biomarkers, renal hemodynamics, and histopathological examination were evaluated. Results: Administration of N. sativa highly significantly normalized serum EPO level, HIF-2α (P < 0.001 for each) in DNP + N. sativa treated rats as compared to DNP hypoxic rats. Furthermore, it highly significantly improved renal oxidative stress evident by decreased renal tissues malondialdehyde and increased superoxide dismutase, total thiol, and catalase activity (P < 0.001 for each). Furthermore, a highly significant decline of renal intercellular adhesion molecule-1, myeloperoxidase, and interleukin-6 was observed in DNP + N. sativa rats (P < 0.001 for each). Improvements in renal hemodynamics and kidney functions were also found after N. sativa administration (with P < 0.001 for all parameters). In addition, N. sativa treatment reduced renal histopathological changes of the DNP + N. sativa group. Our results were statistically analyzed using the Prism software package (GraphPad version 8.0). Conclusion: N. sativa has an alleviating effect on DNP-induced hypoxia renal damage and can restore kidney functions in rats’ animal models. High temperatures in late spring, summer, and autumn are one of the main elements limiting cucumber production. Heat stress in cucumber plants leads to significant changes in sex expression and negative effects at the physiological stage, including decreased absorption of water and nutrients, decreased photosynthetic functions, and increased respiration, which in turn affects growth and production. Therefore, it is very difficult for cucumber plants exposed to heat stress to improve their productivity, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Cucumber plants bear a variety of flower forms, including staminate, pistillate, and hermaphrodites that occur in different arrangements. In addition, maleness is considered the main problem in cucumber production, as it significantly reduces fruit yield. Recently, the growth, flowering, and productivity of plants have been controlled with the help of growth-regulating substances, and one of these substances is naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), which is of great importance in modifying sex in cucumber and various cucurbit crops. Two experiments were conducted during 2022 and 2023 during the summer season to study the effect of foliar spraying of two levels of potassium nitrate, 500 mg/L and 1000 mg/L, and two levels of NAA, 50 mg/L and 100 mg/L, individually and together, and the comparison treatment in nine treatments on growth traits, sex ratio, fruit traits and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativas L.) plants in three replicates in a completely randomized block design. The results indicated that applying the treatment containing 1000 mg/L KNO3 + 100 mg/L NAA led to obtaining the highest value in most vegetable growth, flowering, and production parameters, with a significant increase compared to the control and all other treatments. Followed by treatments consisting of potassium nitrate and NAA, which gave high values in the traits of sex ratio %, fruit setting %, fruit yield, and most other traits. The water-retaining and yield-increasing capacity of super-absorbent polymer (SAP) are essential for soil remediation in arid and semi-arid areas. Water availability is an increasing challenge to plant development and crop yield. During the growing seasons in 2021 and 2022, the present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the addition of different amounts of SAP on the development and yield of green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv Bronco) under varying water deficit stresses, compared with the control treatment without SAP and water deficit stress. The results demonstrated that a 50% reduction in water requirement (WR) resulted in significant decreases in leaf fresh weight, specific leaf area, leaf total chlorophyll content, pod number, leaf free water content, pod fresh weight per plant, and yield. Decreases were also found in pod total chlorophyll content, carotenoids, dry matter and total protein, leaf proline content, and crude fiber content. Additionally, leaf water saturation deficit was significantly increased under the stress compared with the full irrigation at 100% WR. However, irrigation at 75% WR increased pod contents of ascorbic acid, total sugars, and leaf bound water. The current study also indicated that addition of SAP significantly enhanced the above-mentioned growth characteristics under irrigation at 50% and 75% WR. Treatment with SAP at 3 g/plant was the most effective in mitigating the adverse effects of water deficiency, especially at the irrigation rate of 75% WR. Pearson's correlation analysis showed significantly positive correlations between the growth parameters, as well as pod yield, under water stress and SAP. Background and Objectives: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a prevalent form of malignancy that is characterized by high mortality rates and prognosis that remain suboptimal, largely due to treatment resistance mechanisms. Recent studies have implicated cancer stem cells (CSCs), particularly those expressing epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM), in HCC progression and resistance. In the present study, we sought to assess EpCAM expression in HCC patients and its correlation with various clinicopathological parameters. Materials and Methods: Tissue samples from 42 HCC patients were subjected to immunohistochemical staining to evaluate EpCAM expression. Clinicopathological data were obtained including the size, grade and stage of tumors, vascular invasion status, alpha-fetoprotein levels, and cirrhosis status. The Chi square and Fisher's exact tests were employed to assess the association between categorical groups. Independent Student-t test or Mann–Whitney U test was used to investigate the association between continuous patient characteristics and survival. Results: Immunohistochemical analysis revealed EpCAM expression in 52.5% of HCC cases. EpCAM-positive tumors exhibited characteristics indicative of aggressive disease, including larger tumor sizes (p = 0.006), greater tumor multiplicity (p = 0.004), higher grades (p = 0.002), more advanced stages (p = 0.003), vascular invasion (p = 0.023), elevated alpha-fetoprotein levels (p = 0.013), and cirrhosis (p = 0.052). Survival analysis demonstrated that EpCAM expression was significantly associated with lower overall rates of survival and higher rates of recurrence in HCC patients. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that EpCAM expression may serve as a prognostic biomarker for HCC with a potential role in patient management. Targeting EpCAM-positive CSCs may represent a promising approach to overcome treatment resistance and improve clinical outcomes in HCC. However, further investigation into the molecular mechanisms underlying EpCAM's role in HCC progression is warranted to facilitate the development of personalized therapeutic interventions. Background: Abortion is a spontaneous loss of pregnancy before 20 weeks. Approximately 42 million pregnancies end in abortion. The maternal infections that are transmissible from mother to fetus are caused by many pathogens, of which the TORCH complex contributes majorly to neonatal and infant deaths globally. The aim of this study is to detect the prevalence and types of infectious causes of abortion. One hundred aborted women admitted to King Faisal Medical Complex Maternity Hospital in Taif City between the period of 2018 and 2020 were enrolled in this study. The serological test reports (TORCH panel), as well as reports of hematological (CBC) and chemical parameters, were obtained from laboratory management system databases, reviewed, and then analyzed. The H&E-stained microscopic slides of their product of conception (POC) were examined under a microscope and compared with histopathological reports. The prevalence of TORCH infections was 8% in aborted women. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and mixed TORCH infections constituted the highest percentage of TORCH pathogens in aborted women, constituting 6%. The most detected histopathological finding in seropositive cases (50%) was POC, with mixed inflammatory infiltrates and chronic endometritis, while in seronegative aborted women, POC was normal (64.1%). There is a statistically significant increase in the mean count of white blood cells in seropositive women. Therefore, it is important to provide health campaigns to bring awareness to the population about the risk factors of infectious agents to be avoided, especially during pregnancy.
