Abstract Two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e− ORR) is a promising alternative to energy-intensive anthraquinone process for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. Metal-free nanocarbon materials have garnered intensive attention as highly prospective electrocatalysts for H2O2 production, and an in-depth understanding of their porous structure and active sites have become a critical scientific challenge. The present research investigates a range of porous carbon catalysts, including non-porous, microporous, and mesoporous structures, to elucidate the impacts of porous structures on 2e− ORR activity. The results highlighted the superiority of mesoporous carbon over other porous materials, demonstrating remarkable H2O2 selectivity. Furthermore, integration of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data analysis with electrochemical assessment results unravels the moderate surface oxygen content is the key to increase 2e− ORR activity. These results not only highlight the intricate interplay between pore structure and oxygen content in determining catalytic selectivity, but also enable the design of carbon catalysts for specific electrochemical reactions.

Abstract Background Malnutrition poses a substantial challenge in Somalia, impacting approximately 1.8 million children. This critical issue is exacerbated by a multifaceted interplay of factors. Consequently, this study seeks to examine the long-term and short-term effects of armed conflicts, food price inflation, and climate variability on global acute malnutrition in Somalia. Methods The study utilized secondary data spanning from January 2015 to December 2022, sourced from relevant databases. Two distinct analytical approaches were employed to comprehensively investigate the dynamics of global acute malnutrition in Somalia. Firstly, dynamic autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) simulations were applied, allowing for a nuanced understanding of the short and long-term effects of armed conflicts, food price inflation, and climate variability on malnutrition. Additionally, the study employed kernel-based regularized least squares, a sophisticated statistical technique, to further enhance the robustness of the findings. The analysis was conducted using STATA version 17. Results In the short run, armed conflicts and food price inflation exhibit positive associations with global acute malnutrition, particularly in conflict-prone areas and during inflationary periods. Moreover, climatic variables, specifically temperature and rainfall, demonstrate positive associations. It is important to note that temperature lacks a statistically significant relationship with global acute malnutrition in the short run. In the long run, armed conflicts and food price inflation maintain persistent impacts on global acute malnutrition, as confirmed by the dynamic ARDL simulations model. Furthermore, both temperature and rainfall continue to show positive associations with global acute malnutrition, but it is worth noting that temperature still exhibits a non-significant relationship. The results from kernel-based regularized least squares were consistent, further enhancing the robustness of the findings. Conclusions Increased armed conflicts, food price inflation, temperature, and rainfall were associated with increased global acute malnutrition. Strategies such as stabilizing conflict-prone regions, diplomatic interventions, and peace-building initiatives are crucial, along with measures to control food price inflation. Implementing climate adaptation strategies is vital to counter temperature changes and fluctuating rainfall patterns, emphasizing the need for resilience-building. Policymakers and humanitarian organizations can leverage these insights to design targeted interventions, focusing on conflict resolution, food security, and climate resilience to enhance Somalia's overall nutritional well-being.

Abstract Background Anemia remains a major global public health issue, affecting around 24.8% of the world’s population in both developing and developed countries. Pregnant women in developing countries are particularly susceptible, with 38.2% affected worldwide. Anemia is also a major contributor to maternal mortality, with 510,000 maternal deaths globally, of which 20% occur in developing countries and are related to anemia. Iron deficiency anemia is the most prevalent form, impacting 1.3 to 2.2 billion individuals, with 50% being women of reproductive age. Aim This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of anemia in pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) at Hargeisa Group Hospital (HGH), Somaliland. Methods A cross-sectional study included 360 pregnant women, who sought ANC at HGH from July 15 to August 6, 2023. The study subjects were selected using systematic random sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and participants’ current medical charts, including hemoglobin levels. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software (version 20). Results The study revealed an overall prevalence of anemia among pregnant women at 50.6% (95% CI: 45.40 − 55.72%). Anemia severity was categorized as mild (33.0%), moderate (54.9%), and severe (12.1%). Factors statistically associated with anemia included gestational age in the third trimester (AOR = 3.248, 95% CI: 1.491–7.074), lack of ANC visits (AOR = 6.828, 95% CI: 1.966–23.721), and absence of iron supplementation (AOR = 29.588, 95% CI: 2.922–299.713). Notably, a higher consumption of meat per week was associated with a reduced risk of anemia (AOR = 0.198, 95% CI: 0.104–0.379). Conclusion The study underscores the severity of anemia in pregnant women within the range considered as severe public health problem by WHO. It is crucial to emphasize effective prenatal care, improve dietary practices, and promote the provision of iron supplements. Enhanced maternal education on Anemia during ANC visits has the potential to reduce Anemia prevalence and mitigate adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Objective: Different anaesthetists for sedation or monitored anaesthesia care have been used for colonoscopy. The target of this research was the ability to perform colonoscopy under a painless degree of sedation and the prevalence of undesired proceedings. Methods: A total of 60 patients were randomly divided into two groups: Group D received dexmedetomidine and Group PF received propofol-fentanyl. Patients in both groups received the same infusion ratio. The minimum infusion amount of dexmetatomidine is (0.1 to 0.4 μg kg-1 h-1) in Group D, whereas fentanyl is administered at a rate of 0.01 to 0.05 μg kg-1 min-1 in the PF group during the approximately 45-min colonoscopy. Results: Group D exhibited significantly lower modified Observer’s Assessment of Alertness/Sedation (OAA/S) scores at intraoperative time points T1-T12. Group D also exhibited significantly lower visual analog scale scores for pain at intraoperative time points T4 and T7. The mean arterial pressure was significantly lower in Group D at intraoperative times T6-T8 and T11-T12, as well as upon admission to the post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU) and 30 min after admission to the PACU. The results of the ANOVA tests revealed a significantly lower heart rate in Group D. The respiratory rate exhibited a notable decrease during time intervals T8 and T10 in the PF group. Conclusion: The administration of dexmetatomidine and propofol-fentanyl during colonoscopy was found to be safe. In addition, dexmetatomidine may present significant benefits in this context because of its lower occurrence of adverse respiratory events.

Abstract Background Population mortality is an important metric that sums information from different public health risk factors into a single indicator of health. However, the impact of COVID-19 on population mortality in low-income and crisis-affected countries like Sudan remains difficult to measure. Using a community-led approach, we estimated excess mortality during the COVID-19 epidemic in two Sudanese communities. Methods Three sets of key informants in two study locations, identified by community-based research teams, were administered a standardised questionnaire to list all known decedents from January 2017 to February 2021. Based on key variables, we linked the records before analysing the data using a capture-recapture statistical technique that models the overlap among lists to estimate the true number of deaths. Results We estimated that deaths per day were 5.5 times higher between March 2020 and February 2021 compared to the pre-pandemic period in East Gezira, while in El Obeid City, the rate was 1.6 times higher. Conclusion This study suggests that using a community-led capture-recapture methodology to measure excess mortality is a feasible approach in Sudan and similar settings. Deploying similar community-led estimation methodologies should be considered wherever crises and weak health infrastructure prevent an accurate and timely real-time understanding of epidemics’ mortality impact in real-time.

Abstract Iron Oxide-commercial activated carbon nanocomposite (CAC-IO) was prepared from commercial activated carbon (CAC) by the co-precipitation method, and the resulting nanocomposite was used as an adsorbent to remove hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) ions and Mordant Violet 40 (MV40) dye from wastewater. The produced materials (CAC, CAC after oxidation, and CAC-IO) were comparatively characterized using FTIR, BET, SEM, EDX TEM, VSM, and XRD techniques. The adsorption mechanism of Cr6+ ions and MV40 dye on CAC-IO was examined using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models.. Different models were applied to know the adsorption mechanism and it was obtained that Pseudo-second order fits the experimental data better. This means that the adsorption of the adsorbate on the nanocomposite was chemisorption. The maximum removal percent of Cr6+ ions by CAC-IO nanocomposite was 98.6% determined as 2 g L–1 adsorbent concentration, 100 mg L–1 initial pollutant concentration, solution pH = 1.6, the contact time was 3 h and the temperature was room temperature. The maximum removal percentage of Mordant Violet 40 dye (C.I. 14,745) from its solutions by CAC-IO nanocomposite was 99.92% in 100 mg L–1 of initial dye concentrations, 1.0 g L–1 of adsorbent concentration, solution pH = 2.07, the contact time was 3 h. The MV40 dye adsorption on CAC-IO was the most fitted to the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity was calculated according to the Langmuir model as 833.3 mg g–1 at 2 g L–1 of adsorbent concentration and 400 mg L–1 of initial MV40 dye concentration. The Cr6+ ions adsorption on CAC-IO was more fitted to the Freundlich model with Q max , equal to 312.50 mg g–1 at 1 g L–1 adsorbent concentration and 400 mg L–1 of Cr6+ ions initial concentrations.

Leukocoria is an aberration of the eyeball that interferes with normal reflection. It shows up as a white or gray pupillary reflex rather than the bright red or orange pupil of the other eye. Leukocoria can be brought on by a variety of ocular pathologies, with retinoblastoma being the most common. We present the case of a 17-month-old guy who had unilateral leukocoria and whose orbital MRI was ordered on the basis of retinoblastoma suspicion. The results, however, were more suggestive of Coats disease than retinoblastoma. Telangiectasia and exudate, which frequently afflict males’ unilateral eyes, are the hallmarks of Coats’ illness. Depending on the stage of the disease, there are differences in its severity, course, and outlook. It is crucial to get therapy and a diagnosis for retinal problems as soon as possible. Although uncommon, there are still many people who are not familiar with Coats’ disease. This paper aims to describe imaging findings in Coats' disease.

ABSTRACTThe study aims to investigate the effect of social media on adolescents’ digital life quality based on the descriptive analytical approach. It includes two questionnaires about using social media and the quality of digital life. Participants (N = 192) are adolescents residing in the UAE who study in middle and high schools and range in age from 13 to 16. They come from Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Ras Al-Khaimah Emirates. Findings show the significant role of social media in enhancing adolescents’ Digital Quality of Life. Findings also indicate statistically significant differences between respondents’ interests when using media applications in favour of those with scientific interests; they score the highest mean, 4.62. Also, there are statistically significant differences between the respondents when choosing their favourite means of communication; the differences favour Facebook by an arithmetic mean of 4.50, TikTok 4.39, Instagram 4.26, X 3.88, and Telegram 3.79.

High dropout rates in higher education pose a significant challenge, prompting a need for effective retention strategies. Research shows promoting students’ engagement as key factor in retention. This is most effectively nurtured through regular activities that explicitly connect to academic goals and involve all students. This study proposes to investigate the role of reciprocity which involves the exchange of knowledge and resources on the basis of mutual benefits, and considers WhatsApp groups as an interactive medium for connecting and sharing. Data from an online questionnaire of 309 university students was used to test the research model. Data analysis was performed using the partial least squares method. The findings revealed that that information quality (IQ) and service quality (SERQ) exert a positive influence on satisfaction (SAT), while system quality (SQ) does not. Similarly, reciprocity has a positive influence on both SAT and intention to stay (INTENT). Moreover, our study reaffirmed the established positive relationship between SAT and INTENT. Online platforms like WhatsApp groups, supported by reciprocity and a higher quality of contents and services, can promote satisfaction and knowledge sharing among students, ultimately addressing the challenge of student retention in higher education.

Abstract Background Routine immunization contributes greatly to reduction in mortality from vaccine preventable diseases among children. The Somaliland Demographic and Health survey, 2020 revealed that only 13.7% of children in Marodijeh (Hargeisa) region had received all recommended vaccines, which is far below the World Health Organization (WHO) target of 80%. We therefore, assessed factors associated with immunization coverage among children under five years at Mohamed Mooge Health Center in Hargeisa, Somaliland. Methods Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted on 174 systematically sampled, consented mothers that visited Mohamed Mooge Health Center for antenatal care during December 2022 to May 2023. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Data was analysed using SPSS and the relationship between dependent and independent variables was checked chi-square test at p ≤ 0.05. Finally, candidate variables were tested by using multivariate logistic regression in order to control potential confounders and the result was presented using AOR and 95% confidence interval. Model fitness was checked using Hosmer-Lemeshaw goodness of fit test with P > 0.05 for fitness. Multicollinearity between variables was checked using correlation coefficients at 0.80 or higher. Result Among 174 study participants, the prevalence of overall vaccine completion in this study was 55.3%. Women who had being aware about childhood immunization on BCG vaccination (AOR = 3.887; 95% CI: 1.275, 6.844), pentavalent (AOR = 11.385; 95% CI: 5.424–14.464), and measles (AOR = 3.074; 95% CI: 1.822–6.130) had higher odds of having immunized their children. Mothers who had employment had higher odds of having their children immunized against measles (AOR = 4.069; 95% CI: 1.822–6.130) compared to those who had not. Conclusions Full immunization coverage was lower than the target set by the World Health Organization in this study area. The current study revealed that, the mother’s awareness of childhood vaccinations on BCG, pentavalent, measles and employment status of mothers were positively associated with immunization coverage. To promote vaccination coverage, the government should implement a national awareness campaign on childhood immunization and increase the number of outreach services.

Abstract In recent years, water pollution has become one of the most dangerous problems facing the world. Pollution of water with heavy metals and different dyes has caused many harmful effects on human health, living organisms and our environment. In this study, iron oxide nanomagnetic composite from Pterocladia Capillacea red algae-derived activated carbon (PCAC-IO) was synthesized by co-precipitation method using different iron salts and different base solutions. The synthesized nanocomposite was investigated with various characterization techniques such as FTIR, BET, SEM-EDX, TEM, XRD, and VSM. The obtained PCAC-IO adsorbent was used for Cr6+ ions and Mordant Violet 40 (MV40) dye removal. The adsorption mechanism of Cr6+ ions and MV40 dye on PCAC-IO was examined using several adsorption and kinetic isotherm models. Langmuir and Freundlich models were investigated using experimental data. Pseudo-first-order (PFO), Pseudo-second-order (PSO) and intraparticle diffusion models (IPDM) were applied to identify the adsorption mechanism. It has shown that the PSO kinetic model fits better with the experimental data obtained from PCAC-IO. This result can be interpreted as the adsorption of the adsorbate on the nanocomposite as chemical adsorption. The optimum conditions for maximum Cr6+ ions removal (96.88%) with PCAC-IO adsorbent occur at room temperature, 5 g L−1 adsorbent concentration, 100 mg L−1 initial pollutant concentration, pH 1 and at the end of 180 min, while maximum MV40 dye removal (99.76%), other conditions being the same, unlikely it occurred at pH 2.06 and after 45 min. The most suitable model for Cr6+ ions removal under the conditions of 1 L−1 g adsorbent concentration and 400 mg L−1 adsorbate concentration was Langmuir (Q max = 151.52 mg g−1), while for MV40 removal it was Freundlich (Q max = 303.03 mg g−1). We propose the use of activated carbon-supported iron oxide prepared from bio-waste material, especially from Pterocladia Capillacea red algae, as a promising adsorbent with high efficiency in the removal of Cr6+ ions and MV40 dye from aqueous media.
