This paper proposes a deep feature extractor for iris recognition at arbitrary resolutions. Resolution degradation reduces the recognition performance of deep learning models trained by high-resolution images. Using various-resolution images for training can improve the model's robustness while sacrificing recognition performance for high-resolution images. To achieve higher recognition performance at various resolutions, we propose a method of resolution-adaptive feature extraction with automatically switching networks. Our framework includes resolution expert modules specialized for different resolution degradations, including down-sampling and out-of-focus blurring. The framework automatically switches them depending on the degradation condition of an input image. Lower-resolution experts are trained by knowledge-distillation from the high-resolution expert in such a manner that both experts can extract common identity features. We applied our framework to three conventional neural network models. The experimental results show that our method enhances the recognition performance at low-resolution in the conventional methods and also maintains their performance at high-resolution.

We have performed time-dependent density functional theory simulations for the neutralization process of a hydrogen ion injected at 100eV onto the (110) surface of tungsten material. We have also proposed a method for evaluating the detection probability of electrons in a small region. This probability is interpreted as that of detecting hydrogen in each state: positive ion, neutral atom, and negative ion. The neutralization process of an ion particle on a surface is key issue of the plasma-wall interaction (PWI). We investigated helium (He) ion injection onto a tungsten surface using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) simulation. We developed the TDDFT code QUMASUN for this study, simulating the process of electron transfer from the surface to the He nucleus by solving the time evolution of electron wave function and the classical motion of nuclei simultaneously. Our results show that the probabilities of injected $\text{He}^{2+}$ changing into $\text{He}^{1+}$ and $\text{He}^{0}$ on the surface are approximately 40 percent and 13 percent, respectively. The captured electrons by $\text{He}^{1+}$ and $\text{He}^{0}$ predominantly occupy the 2s and 2p orbitals, corresponding to excited states. In this note, we study Seshadri constants and Gromov widths of toric surfaces via lattice widths of their moment polygons. In recent years, significant progress has been made in image recognition technology based on deep neural networks. However, improving recognition performance under low-light conditions remains a significant challenge. This study addresses the enhancement of recognition model performance in low-light conditions. We propose an image-adaptive learnable module which apply appropriate image processing on input images and a hyperparameter predictor to forecast optimal parameters used in the module. Our proposed approach allows for the enhancement of recognition performance under low-light conditions by easily integrating as a front-end filter without the need to retrain existing recognition models designed for low-light conditions. The total mass estimate of molecular clouds suffers from the uncertainty in the H$_2$-CO conversion factor, the so-called $X_{\rm CO}$ factor, which is used to convert the $^{12}$CO (1--0) integrated intensity to the H$_2$ column density. We demonstrate the machine learning's ability to predict the H$_2$ column density from the $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O (1--0) data set of four star-forming molecular clouds; Orion A, Orion B, Aquila, and M17. When the training is performed on a subset of each cloud, the overall distribution of the predicted column density is consistent with that of the Herschel column density. The total column density predicted and observed is consistent within 10\%, suggesting that the machine learning prediction provides a reasonable total mass estimate of each cloud. However, the distribution of the column density for values $> \sim 2 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, which corresponds to the dense gas, could not be predicted well. This indicates that molecular line observations tracing the dense gas are required for the training. We also found a significant difference between the predicted and observed column density when we created the model after training the data on different clouds. This highlights the presence of different $X_{\rm CO}$ factors between the clouds, and further training in various clouds is required to correct for these variations. We also demonstrated that this method could predict the column density toward the area not observed by Herschel if the molecular line and column density maps are available for the small portion, and the molecular line data are available for the larger areas., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

For a polarized abelian variety $(X,L)$, Z. Jiang and G. Pareschi introduce an invariant $\beta(X,L)$, called the basepoint-freeness threshold. Using this invariant, we show that a general polarized abelian variety $(X,L)$ of dimension $g$ is projectively normal if $\chi(L) \geq 2^{2g-1}$ and the type of $L$ is not $(2,4,\dots,4)$. This bound is sharp since it is known that any polarized abelian variety of type $(2,4,\dots,4)$ is not projectively normal. G. Pareschi and M. Popa give criterions for global generations and surjectivity of multiplication maps of global sections of coherent sheaves on abelian varieties in the theory of M-regularity. In this paper, we generalize some of their criterions via the M-regularity of $\mathbb{Q}$-twisted sheaves. As an application, we show that the M-regularity of a suitable $\mathbb{Q}$-twisted sheaf implies property $(N_p)$ and jet-ampleness for ample line bundles on abelian varieties., Comment: 17 pages

In this paper, we show that a general polarized abelian variety $(X,L)$ of type $(1,\dots,1,d)$ and dimension $g$ satisfies property $(N_p)$ if $ d \geq \sum_{i=0}^{g} (p+2)^i$. For a polarized abelian variety, Z. Jiang and G. Pareschi introduce an invariant and show that the polarization is basepoint free or projectively normal if the invariant is small. Their result is generalized to higher syzygies by F. Caucci, that is, the polarization satisfies property $(N_p)$ if the invariant is small. In this paper, we study a relation between the invariant and degrees of abelian subvarieties with respect to the polarization. For abelian threefolds, we give an upper bound of the invariant using degrees of abelian subvarieties. It is known that the automorphism group of a K-polystable Fano manifold is reductive. Codogni and Dervan construct a canonical filtration of the section ring, called Loewy filtration, and conjecture that the Loewy filtration destabilizes any Fano variety with non-reductive automorphism group. We introduce and study the successive minima of line bundles on proper algebraic varieties. The first (resp. last) minima are the width (resp. Seshadri constant) of the line bundle at very general points. The volume of the line bundle is equivalent to the product of the successive minima. The electronic structure of monolayer hexagonal boron nitride grown on Ni by the diffusion and precipitation method was studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy, emission spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and micro-ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy. No indication of hybridization between h-BN pi and Ni 3d orbitals was observed. That is, the monolayer h-BN was found to be in the quasi-free-standing state. These results are in striking contrast to those of previous studies in which h-BN was strongly bound to the Ni surface by the orbital hybridization. The absence of hybridization is attributed to absence of a Ni(111) surface in this study. The lattice-matched Ni(111) surface is considered to be essential to orbital hybridization between h-BN and Ni.

We study the $m$-th Gauss map in the sense of F.~L.~Zak of a projective variety $X \subset \mathbb{P}^N$ over an algebraically closed field in any characteristic. For all integer $m$ with $n:=\dim(X) \leq m < N$, we show that the contact locus on $X$ of a general tangent $m$-plane is a linear variety if the $m$-th Gauss map is separable. We also show that for smooth $X$ with $n < N-2$, the $(n+1)$-th Gauss map is birational if it is separable, unless $X$ is the Segre embedding $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^n \subset \mathbb{P}^{2n-1}$. In this paper, we discuss the problem of whether the difference $[X]-[Y]$ of the classes of a Fourier--Mukai pair $(X, Y)$ of smooth projective varieties in the Grothendieck ring of varieties is annihilated by some power of the class $\mathbb{L} = [ \mathbb{A}^1 ]$ of the affine line. We give an affirmative answer for Fourier--Mukai pairs of very general K3 surfaces of degree 12. On the other hand, we prove that in each dimension greater than one, there exists an abelian variety such that the difference with its dual is not annihilated by any power of $\mathbb{L}$, thereby giving a negative answer to the problem.
