Abstract

NanoTerasu, a new 3 GeV synchrotron light source in Japan, began user operation in April 2024. It provides high-brilliance soft to tender X-rays and covers a wide spectral range from ultraviolet to tender X-rays. Its compact storage ring with a circumference of 349 m is based on a four-bend achromat lattice to provide two straight sections in each cell for insertion devices with a natural horizontal emittance of 1.14 nm rad, which is small enough for soft X-rays users. The NanoTerasu accelerator incorporates several innovative technologies, including a full-energy injector C-band linear accelerator with a length of 110 m, an in-vacuum off-axis injection system, a four-bend achromat with B-Q combined bending magnets, and a TM020 mode accelerating cavity with built-in higher-order-mode dampers in the storage ring. This paper presents the accelerator machine commissioning over a half-year period and our model-consistent ring optics correction. The first user operation with a stored beam current of 160 mA is also reported. We summarize the storage ring parameters obtained from the commissioning. 2. Photon energy dependence of photoneutron production from heavy targets

Abstract

The double differential cross-sections (DDXs) of photoneutron production via the photonuclear reaction on tantalum, tungsten, and bismuth for 13 and 17 MeV linearly polarized photon beams were measured using the time-of-flight method at the NewSUBARU-BL01 facility. Polarized photons were obtained by the Laser Compton backscattering (LCS) technique. Two distinct components were observed on the spectra: the lowenergy component up to 4 MeV and the high-energy above 4 MeV. The angular distribution of the low-energy component was isotropic, whereas the high-energy was distributed anisotropically and influenced by the angle between direction of photon polarization and neutron emission, especially for 17 MeV photon energy. These phenomena were similar to those of 197Au target observed in the previous studies. The low-energy neutron distributions at 13 and 17 MeV photon energies were almost identical for all three targets. The DDX energy integration was calculated and compared among the three targets for two-photon energies. Given the horizontal polarization (plane parallel to the x-axis) of the incident photons, the emission angles of 90° on the x-axis and y-axis recorded the maximum and minimum photoneutron yield, respectively. The differences between these two positions were minor for 181Ta and natW at 13 MeV photon energy and noticeable for other cases. An underestimation of the TENDL nuclear data library was observed on the photoneutron DDXs compared to the experimental results for 181Ta and 209Bi.

Abstract

In this study, we compared double differential cross-sections (DDXs) between the experimental data obtained by 16.6 MeV of polarized photons and the DDXs from JENDL2004 and JENDL/PD-2016.1 for 197Au, natPb, natCu, and natTi targets. Using Python-based software, we extracted the DDXs from the nuclear data libraries (NDLs), which were subsequently deduced considering the abundances of each target’s isotopes, the width of the photon beam, and the energy resolution of the neutron detectors. For the Ti target, the experimental DDX data were consistent with that of the NDLs. For Pb, Au, and Cu targets, the experimental DDX data at neutron energies higher than 4 MeV were larger than the DDX values obtained from the NDLs. The inconsistency between the DDXs of the experimental data and those of the NDLs indicates the need to improve the physical models to generate the spectrum of photoneutrons.

Abstract

We measured neutron energy spectra for the photonuclear reactions of 16.6 MeV linearly polarized photons on Pb, Au, Sn, Cu, Fe and Ti. The spectra for each target show dependence on the target mass, as well as on the angle between the directions of neutron emission and polarization. The components show angular dependence were extracted from the spectra for each target and compare with the excited levels of residual nuclei. Based on the data, we discuss a plan for further experiments to clearly observe the features of the spectra.

8. Estimation of Absorbed Dose due to Gas Bremsstrahlung Based on Residual Gas in Electron Storage Rings

Abstract

AbstractGas bremsstrahlung, generated by the interaction between stored electrons and residual gas in electron storage rings, is an important radiation source for the shielding of synchrotron radiation (SR) facilities. In recent SR facilities, hydrogen was found dominant in the residual gas of the vacuum chambers of the electron storage rings, although air has been conventionally assumed as the bremsstrahlung target for the shielding designs of SR beamlines extended from the electron storage ring. To study the effect of residual gas composition on the dose rate outside shields, we calculated the intensity of gas bremsstrahlung based on the gas composition for both the air and the residual gas expected in the recent electron storage rings using an analytical formula and general-purpose Monte Carlo codes for particle transport calculations. The analytical shielding calculation with a realistic gas composition was found to well reproduce the energy spectra of gas bremsstrahlung simulated by the Monte Carlo codes. The correction factors between the air and the realistic gas compositions are applied to the conventional analytical formulas for dose estimation of secondary radiations generated by the interaction between the bremsstrahlung from air and beamline components.

The anisotropy of the high-energy component can be expressed as a function of $\cos 2{\rm{\Theta\ }}$cos2Θ , where $\Theta $Θis the angle between the direction of the photon polarization and neutron emission.The DDX energy integrations of the high-energy component were calculated and compared between the three targets. These integration values on natTa and natW were comparable and around 1.5 times smaller than those on 209Bi, regardless of the detection angles.

10. Shielding design of NanoTerasu for gas bremsstrahlung and photonuclear reaction

Abstract

ABSTRACTTo exclude an experimental hall from a radiation-controlled area at the state-of-the-art 3 GeV synchrotron radiation facility, NanoTerasu, Japan, the shielding design of optical hatches for gas bremsstrahlung from a storage ring and secondary radiations induced by photonuclear reactions was precisely undertaken using the particle-transport Monte Carlo code, PHITS. The energy spectrum of gas bremsstrahlung expected for the NanoTerasu storage ring was calculated using analytical formulas and PHITS with EGS5 algorithm. The effective dose rates behind the optical elements and hatches estimated using PHITS and analytical formulas were consistent with accuracy factors of 1–2.

17. Visualization of light-emitting diode lighting damage process in radiation environment by an in situ measurement

Abstract

We investigated the radiation damage process of commercially available light-emitting diode (LED) lightings in an X-ray radiation environment such as the electron storage ring SPring-8. It was found that metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) in the LED power supplies were damaged by X-ray irradiation by the total dose effect greater than several hundred Gy (air kerma). To visualize the whole damage process, we performed in situ measurement of the MOSFET under an irradiation from an X-ray tube. The result clearly showed a sudden increase of the off-state drain current accompanying with a sharp increase of MOSFET temperature as a function of radiation dose, which eventually caused the device failure. We supposed from the result a significant increase of device lifetime by switching off the LED power supply and experimentally verified it by observing the increase of lifetime by an order of magnitude or more under the same irradiation condition. The revealed X-ray radiation damage process is expected to provide useful tips for employing LED lightings in X-ray radiation environments.

Abstract

An experimental platform using X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses with high-intensity optical laser pulses has been developed at the SACLA XFEL facility. An overview of the commissioning and the capabilities of the experimental platform is presented., An experimental platform using X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses with high-intensity optical laser pulses is open for early users’ experiments at the SACLA XFEL facility after completion of the commissioning. The combination of the hard XFEL and the high-intensity laser provides capabilities to open new frontiers of laser-based high-energy-density science. During the commissioning phase, characterization of the XFEL and the laser at the platform has been carried out for the combinative utilization as well as the development of instruments and basic diagnostics for user experiments. An overview of the commissioning and the current capabilities of the experimental platform is presented.

Abstract

Spectra of neutrons produced by a photonuclear reaction from a 197Au target were measured using 16.95 MeV linearly and circularly polarized photon beams at NewSUBARU-BL01 using a time-of-flight method. The difference in the neutron spectra between the cases of a linearly and circularly polarized photon was measured. The difference in the neutron yield increased with the neutron energy and was approximately threefold at the maximum neutron energy. In a direction perpendicular to that of the linear polarization, the neutron yields decreased as the neutron energy increased.

Abstract

国内初の高輝度中型放射光施設となる3GeV次世代放射光施設の蓄積リングは、最新の加速器ラティス設計であるMBA(Multi-Bend Achromat)構造を取り入れて低エミッタンス化し、軟X線からテンダーX線領域で高コヒーレンス・高輝度光の提供を目指す。蓄積リングへの入射加速器は、軟X線FELへの拡張性を考慮して3 GeVの線型加速器とし、SACLAで用いられた常伝導高勾配C-band加速システムを採用した。また、電子ビームの安定性や加速器運転の信頼性が、光源の実効性能や利用者の利便性に大きく影響するとの視点に立ち、機器性能の確保、運転の信頼性とメインテナンス性を最大限考慮した加速器設計を進めている。 蓄積リングは周長約350mで16セル、4BAを採用し、SPring-8 II計画のR&Dを最大限活用して機器の性能保証、コストの合理化を図っている。自然水平エミッタンス1.1nmrad、蓄積電流400mAを目指す。SACLAをベースに設計された3GeV線形加速器は、蓄積リングへの入射器としての運転を前提としているが、蓄積リング外側に配置しており、将来の軟X線FELへの拡張を視野に入れている。 本発表では、3GeV次世代放射光施設の加速器の特徴と進展状況を報告する。, 第16回日本加速器学会年会

28. Neutron emission spectrum from gold excited with 16.6 MeV linearly polarized monoenergetic photons

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe neutron-emission spectrum from a 197Au target excited with a 16.6 ±0.2 MeV, monoenergetic, linearly polarized photon beam was measured using the time-of-flight method at the NewSUBARU-BL01. Two components were clearly detected in the neutron spectrum produced by photonuclear reactions. One component [component (A)] shows an evaporation-like spectrum with energies up to 4 MeV. The spectrum of the other component [component (B)] is shaped like a bump and energies ≥4 MeV. The intensity of the component (A) does not show any definite angular dependence, whereas, that of the component (B) follows the relation [a+ bcos(2Θ)] as a function of the angle Θ between the polarization and detector directions.

Abstract

Since 2011, high power lasers have been delivered stably to the users at SACLA, the SPring-8 Angstrom compact free electron laser, and the upgrades have been performing to obtain the high quality of the laser continuously. Optical fiber based Cherenkov beam loss monitors have been successfully operated from the commissioning phase. This monitor covers the undulator section of beam lines and the electron beam transporting tunnel from SACLA to SPring-8. This monitor is made good use of not only beam transport but also detection of the small beam loss such as electron halos hitting the magnets of undulator. Abstract

A fiber-based beam loss monitors (BLM) is under development for the undulator section of the SPring-8 X-FEL: the system is based on the detection of the Cerenkov light generated by the secondary charged particles hitting an optical fiber set along the vacuum chamber. Various parameters come into account in the final performance of the system, such as the impact angle and energy of the lost electrons, the fiber position (angular and radial) with respect to the point of impact, fiber characteristics (numerical aperture, index, diameter), etc. Thorough numerical studies have been carried out to investigate the performances of the system. Abstract

Fiber-based beam loss monitors (BLM) have attracted much attention in recent years. Among them, systems using the detection of the Cerenkov light generated by the secondary charged particles hitting an optical fiber set along the vacuum chamber, offer the possibility to detect beam losses with a very fast response time (less than a few ms) over long distances, good position accuracy and sensitivity at a reasonable cost. For the undulator section of the SPring-8 X-FEL, radiation safety considerations set the desirable detection limit at 1 pC (corresponding to a 0.1% beam loss of the initial 1 nC/pulse) over more than a hundred meter. We report on a the test operation of a fiber-based BLM carried out at the 250 MeV SPring-8 Compact SASE Source (SCSS), a 1/16th model of the future X-FEL. Abstract

A beam halo region of an electron beam at a linear accelerator might hit the undulator magnets and degrade undulator permanent magnets. An interlock sensor is indispensable to protect the magnets against radiation damage. We have been developing an electron beam halo monitor using diamond detectors for an interlock sensor at the X-ray free electron laser facility at SPring-8 (XFEL/SPring-8). The diamond detectors are operated in photoconductive mode. Pulse-by-pulse measurements are adopted to suppress the background noise efficiently. Abstract

Superheated drop detectors are currently used for personal and environmental dosimetry and their characteristics such as response to neutrons and temperature dependency are well known. A new bubble counter based on the superheated drop technology has been developed by Framework Scientific. However, the response of this detector with the lead shell is not clear especially above several tens of MeV. In this study, the response has been measured with quasi-monoenergetic and monoenergetic neutron sources with and without a lead shell. The experimental results were compared with the results of the Monte Carlo calculations using the ‘Event Generator Mode’ in the PHITS code with the JENDL-HE/2007 data library to clarify the response of this detector with a lead shell in the entire energy range. 50. Development of Thermal Neutron Profiling Method Using an Optical Fiber

Abstract

Wattempted to improve the detector consisting of a6 LiF film and aZ nS(Ag) scintillator coupled to an optical fiber for light transimission to photomultiplier tube. For theZnS(Ag)scintillator, we employed two types of scintillator; (1) ZnS(Ag) doped on a Mylar film (commercial one)and (2) an NE426 scintillator. By employing the combination of ZnS(Ag) and 6LiF films with appropriate thicknesses and arrangement, we could improve the pulse-height distribution. Moreover, we found that pulse shape discrimination (PSD) technique is applicable and effective to distinguish tritons and a particles from proton by Mylar. Applying this technique, we could distinguish thermal neutron events from background events existing in low pulse-height rcgion. The present detector system was tested in the accelerator-based neutron filed and applied to thermal neutron profi1ing in the mockup system of tritium breeding blanket in fusion reactors. By using this detector, we could measure spatial distribution of thermal neutron in real time with high precision by rejecting background components.
