Abstract

Double pancake test coils are fabricated in order to examine the mechanical properties of Bi-2223 conductors under high hoop stress. The critical current of the high-[I.sub.c] test coil is shown to be 164 A, where the hoop stress is estimated at 323 MPa and the high-strength test coil has burst at a hoop stress of approximately 200 MPa.

Abstract

A study on the relationship between critical current and the thickness of oxide layer of Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox(Bi-2212)/Ag composite superconductor was conducted to understand further the local critical current density (Jc) distribution in the oxide layer. Results suggest that the large Jc improvement by Pre-Annealing and Intermediate Rolling process is assigned to higher Jc in the middle part of the oxide layer.

Abstract

A study was conducted on the temperature and field dependences of critical current in direct-heated Nb-tube processed Nb3Al wires. The 0.74 mmphi Nb3Al wires include 121x121 7-core elementary Nb/Al-Mg composites. Results reveal that the volume pinning force of the wires was in agreement with Kramer's scaling law for the measured temperature range 4.2-16 K. Grain boundaries were found to be the most probable pinning source since the phase grains formed were fine.

Abstract

Construction of the 40 T class hybrid magnet system was completed at NRIM. The hybrid magnet will be able to generates the world's highest continuous magnetic field of 40 T class in a 30 mm clear bore. Generation of high magnetic field with the hybrid magnet causes serious problems due to large electromagnetic force. To handle the problems, we have developed new type [(Nb,Ti).sub.3]Sn conductors, new coil clamp technique for 15 T class superconducting magnet, new copper alloy for 25T class polihelix-type water-cooled magnet and new manufacturing procedure which includes winding and machining process for water-cooled magnets through its research and development.

Abstract

The construction of the 40 T class hybrid magnet system was completed at the Tsukuba Magnet Laboratory of NRIM. Now, the total system test is being performed. This system consists of a hybrid magnet composed of a water cooled magnet and a superconducting magnet, power supplies for these magnets, water cooling system, and control system. The power supply for the water cooled magnet is a low ripple power supply, and it also has a 'soft stop circuit' to prevent quenching of the superconducting magnet. In order to confirm the achievement of low current ripple and efficiency of the soft stop circuit, we carefully analyzed the behavior of this circuit. As a results, we confirmed that the performance of the power supply satisfies the specifications. Also, we verified efficiency of the soft stop circuit.

A round-robin test program to standardize critical current measurement methods for oxide superconductors was carried out by Japanese researchers in the framework of the Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards. The activity, which focused on silver-clad BSCCO tape of the 2212 phase, entailed critical current measurements at magnetic fields from zero to 10 T and a temperature of 4.2 K.

Abstract

The effect of Pd seed layer on the magnetic anisotropy in Co films evaporated at oblique incidence was investigated. The thickness of Pd was 500Å and that of Co was varied from 100 to 600Å. The substrate temperatures were -60, -30 and 20℃. Negatively large anisotropy of the squareness ratio appeared in the films prepared at low substrate temperatures -60 and -30℃ thought the anisotropy of the reflection coefficient and the magnetic anisotropy field were positive. The degree of the c-axis orientation perpendicular to the incidence plane seems to be a little large than that of parallel one. From these results, it is considered that the positive in-plane magnetic anisotropy may originate from the shape anisotropy of the columnar grains and/or magnetocrystalline anisotropy, and the anisotropy of the squareness ratio does not reflect the in-place magnetic anisotropy. In the films with negatively large anisotropy of the squareness ratio, large coercive force perpendicular to the film plane appeared. The MH loop in those films can be explained to be superposition of two loops with small and large coercive forces. We consider that the coercive force of under Co layer is small and that of over Co layer large.

Abstract

The effect of Pd seed layer on the magnetic anisotropy in Cobalt films evaporated at oblique incidence was investigated. The deposition rate of Pd layer R(Pd) was varied from 0.1 to 1.7Å/s and that of Co layers R(Co) was from 0.1 to 4.5Å/s. The incidence angle of Pd vapor beam was 30° and that of Co 60°. Negatively large magnetic anisotropy and large coercive force parallel to the incidence plane appeared in Pd/Co films evaporated at low deposition rates of Pd (0.1Å/s) and Co (0.2Å/s) and small thicknesses of Pd (100Å) and Co (about 140Å) layers. In these films the anisotropy of the reflection coefficient was positive though the magnetic anisotropy was negative. Therefore, it is considered that the negative magnetic anisotropy does not originate from the shape anisotropy of the columnar grains but the magnetocrystalline anisotropy through the textural structure.

Abstract

Multifilamentary (Nb, Ti)_3Sn wires supplied for Japan VAMAS standard samples showed non Cu Jc's over 350 A/mm^2 at 15 T, after optimum heat treatments at temperatures from 650℃ to 700℃. The upper critical field Hc2 is extrapolated to about 25 T, for these wires. The uniaxial strain dependence of Ic at 14 T for the (Nb, Ti)_3Sn wire was observed to be greatly reduced, due to the enhancement of Hc2 resulting from the incorporation of Ti into the Nb_3Sn layer. The Nb_3Al wire shows substantially smaller strain sensitivity of Ic as compared to that for the (Nb, Ti)_3 Sn wire.
