Abstract

The Spin Physics Detector collaboration proposes to install a universal detector in the second interaction point of the NICA collider under construction (JINR, Dubna) to study the spin structure of the proton and deuteron and other spin-related phenomena using a unique possibility to operate with polarized proton and deuteron beams at a collision energy up to 27 GeV and a luminosity up to $10^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. As the main goal, the experiment aims to provide access to the gluon TMD PDFs in the proton and deuteron, as well as the gluon transversity distribution and tensor PDFs in the deuteron, via the measurement of specific single and double spin asymmetries using different complementary probes such as charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. Other polarized and unpolarized physics is possible, especially at the first stage of NICA operation with reduced luminosity and collision energy of the proton and ion beams. This document is dedicated exclusively to technical issues of the SPD setup construction.

Abstract

Improvements in X-ray optics critically depend on the measurement of their optical performance. The knowledge of wavefront aberrations, for example, can be used to improve the fabrication of optical elements or to design phase correctors to compensate for these errors. Nowadays, the characterization of such optics is made using intense X-ray sources such as synchrotrons. However, the limited access to these facilities can substantially slow down the development process. Improvements in the brightness of lab-based X-ray micro-sources in combination with the development of new metrology methods, and in particular ptychographic X-ray speckle tracking, enable characterization of X-ray optics in the lab with a precision and sensitivity not possible before. Here, we present a laboratory set-up that utilizes a commercially available X-ray source and can be used to characterize different types of X-ray optics. The set-up is used in our laboratory on a routine basis to characterize multilayer Laue lenses of high numerical aperture and other optical elements. This typically includes measurements of the wavefront distortions, optimum operating photon energy and focal length of the lens. To check the sensitivity and accuracy of this laboratory set-up we compared the results to those obtained at the synchrotron and saw no significant difference. To illustrate the feedback of measurements on performance, we demonstrated the correction of the phase errors of a particular multilayer Laue lens using a 3D printed compound refractive phase plate.

Abstract

A detailed theoretical analysis of the 1s photoionization of neon is presented. It is found that the most significant many-electron correlation in computing photoionization of inner shells is the rearrangement of the outer shells caused by the inner vacancy. Further noticeable effects are: (i) the polarization of the ion core by the outgoing photoelectron and (ii) the coherent effect of double excitation/ionization. The core polarization increases the photoionization cross section by about 10% at the 1s threshold, and the coherent excitation results in further increases by about 5%. Incoherent excitation of the satellite channel leads to an additional 10% increase in the photoabsorption cross section in the double-ionization threshold region., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 22 bibliography

Abstract

The Spin Physics Detector, a universal facility for studying the nucleon spin structure and other spin-related phenomena with polarized proton and deuteron beams, is proposed to be placed in one of the two interaction points of the NICA collider that is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia). At the heart of the project there is huge experience with polarized beams at JINR. The main objective of the proposed experiment is the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon. Spin measurements at the Spin Physics Detector at the NICA collider have bright perspectives to make a unique contribution and challenge our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon. In this document the Conceptual Design of the Spin Physics Detector is presented.

23. Heisenberg spin chains with additional isotropic three-site exchange interactions

Abstract

The $J_1-J_3$ Heisenberg spin models with nearest-neighbor ($J_1$) and additional isotropic three-site ($J_3$) spin interactions remain relatively less explored, although such types of competing exchange terms can naturally emerge from different sources, including the strong-coupling expansion of the multiorbital Hubbard model. Below we present a short survey of the recently published research in this field, the emphasis being on the characteristics of the variety of quantum phases supported by a few generic uniform- and alternating-spin $J_1-J_3$ Heisenberg chains. For the reason that the positive ($J_3>0$) three-site couplings tend towards the formation of local quantum dimers, the $J_1-J_3$ spin models typically experience some spontaneous dimerization upon increasing $J_3$. Actually, it occurred that the established dimer phases in spin-$S$ $J_1-J_3$ Heisenberg chains ($S>{1}/{2}$) serve as complete analogues of the famous gapped Majumdar-Ghosh dimer phase in the spin-${1}/{2}$ Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbor couplings. The same dimerizations have been observed in the alternating-spin ($S,\sigma$) $J_1-J_3$ chains ($S>\sigma$), provided that the cell spin $S+\sigma=\rm{integer}$, whereas for half-integer cell spin, the local dimer formation produces gapless spin-liquid ground states. The alternating-spin $J_1-J_3$ chains also provide some typical examples of spin models supporting the so-called non-Lieb-Mattis magnetic phases., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The Spin Physics Detector (SPD) is a future multipurpose experiment foreseen to run at the NICA collider, which is currently under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna, Russia). The physics program of the experiment is based on collisions of longitudinally and transversely polarized protons and deuterons at $\sqrt{s}$ up to 27 GeV and luminosity up to 10$^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The SPD will operate as a universal facility for comprehensive study of unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon, using different complementary probes such as: charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. The aim of this work is to make a thorough review of the physics objectives that can potentially be addressed at the SPD, underlining related theoretical aspects and discussing relevant experimental results when available. 29. Probing the linearly polarized gluons in unpolarized proton with heavy-quark pair production

Abstract

We consider the azimuthal $\cos \varphi$ and $\cos 2\varphi$ distributions and the Callan-Gross ratio $R={\rm d}\sigma_L/{\rm d}\sigma_T$ in heavy-quark pair electroproduction, $lN\rightarrow l^{\prime}Q\bar{Q}X$, as probes of linearly polarized gluons in unpolarized nucleons. Our analysis shows that the azimuthal asymmetries and Callan-Gross ratio are predicted to be large and very sensitive to the contribution of the gluonic counterpart of the Boer-Mulders function, $h_{1}^{\perp g}$, describing the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized nucleon. Abstract

In recent papers [1,2], two new ways have been proposed to probe the linear polarization of gluons in unpolarized proton: using the azimuthal asymmetries and Callan-Gross ratio in heavy-quark pair leptoproduction, $lN\rightarrow l^{\prime}Q\bar{Q}X$. In this talk, we discuss in details the sensitivity of the QCD predictions for the azimuthal $\cos \varphi$ and $\cos 2\varphi$ asymmetries to the contribution of linearly polarized gluons inside unpolarized proton, where the azimuth $\varphi$ is the angle between the lepton scattering plane $(l,l^{\prime})$ and the heavy quark production plane $(N,Q)$. Our analysis shows that the azimuthal distributions under consideration vary from 0 to 1 depending on the transverse-momentum dependent gluonic counterpart of the Boer-Mulders function, $h_{1}^{\perp g}$. We conclude that the $\cos \varphi$ and $\cos 2\varphi$ asymmetries in heavy-quark pair production in DIS processes are predicted to be large in wide kinematic ranges and sensitive to the contribution of linearly polarized gluons., Comment: 6 pages. We study the Callan-Gross ratio $R={\rm d}\sigma_L/{\rm d}\sigma_T$ in heavy-quark pair leptoproduction, $lN\rightarrow l^{\prime}Q\bar{Q}X$, as a probe of linearly polarized gluons inside unpolarized proton, where ${\rm d}\sigma_T$ (${\rm d}\sigma_L$) is the differential cross section of the $\gamma^*N\rightarrow Q\bar{Q}X$ process initiated by a transverse (longitudinal) virtual photon. Note first that the maximal value for the quantity $R$ allowed by the photon-gluon fusion with unpolarized gluons is large, about 2. We calculate the contribution of the transverse-momentum dependent gluonic counterpart of the Boer-Mulders function, $h_{1}^{\perp g}$, describing the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized proton. Our analysis shows that the maximum value of the ratio $R$ depends strongly on the gluon polarization; it varies from 0 to $\frac{Q^2}{4m^2}$ depending on $h_{1}^{\perp g}$. We conclude that the Callan-Gross ratio in heavy-quark pair leptoproduction is predicted to be large and very sensitive to the contribution of linearly polarized gluons. Abstract

We present the QCD predictions for the azimuthal $\cos 2\varphi$ asymmetry in charm leptoproduction for the kinematics of the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The asymmetry is predicted to be large, about 15%. The radiative corrections to the QCD predictions for the $\cos 2\varphi$ distribution are estimated to be small, less than 10%. Our calculations show that the azimuthal asymmetry in charm production is well defined in pQCD: it is stable both perturbatively and parametrically, and practically insensitive to theoretical uncertainties in the input parameters. We analyze the nonperturbative contributions to the $\cos 2\varphi$ distribution due to the gluon transverse motion in the target and the $c$-quark fragmentation. Because of the $c$-quark low mass, the nonperturbative contributions are expected to be sizable, about (30--40)%. We conclude that extraction of the azimuthal asymmetries from available COMPASS data will provide valuable information about the transverse momentum dependent distribution of the gluon in the proton and the $c$-quark hadronization mechanism. 45. Influence of the prebiotic Immunobeta and the combination Immunobeta + Zoovit probiotic on haematological parameters in breed Ile-de-France lambs.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect from supplementation of the prebiotic Immunobeta and the probiotic Zoovit on haematological parameters in Ile-de-France lambs. The experiment was conducted in the experimental farm of the Agricultural Institute, Stara Zagora. A total of 45 lambs divided into 3 groups of 15 animals each with similar initial live body weight, sex and birth type were included - one control and two experimental. Each animal from experimental group I was supplemented once daily with 8 g prebiotic Immunobeta and those from experimental group II received the same amount of the prebiotic plus 4 g probiotic Zoovit. Blood samples for analysis were collected from 8 animals per group in the beginning and the end of the trial. The group supplemented with the combination Immunobeta + Zoovit had statistically significantly higher haemoglobin content (P<0.05) and haematocrit (P=0.013) that the group fed a diet with Immunobeta prebiotic. The mean corpuscular volume was lower (P<0.05) in experimental group I vs. controls. The addition of the Immunobeta prebiotic resulted in reduced haemoglobin (P=0.012), haematocrit (P=0.012), mean corpuscular volume (P<0.001), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (P<0.001), mean platelet volume (P=0.002), platelet distribution width (P=0.001) and volume of platelet participation (P=0.002) at the end of the trial period. After the supplementation with synbiotic, there was a trend towards lower haemoglobin content (P=0.088). The Immunobeta + Zoovit addition to the diet resulted in statistically significantly reduced haematocrit (P<0.05), reduced mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, mean platelet volume (P<0.001), platelet distribution width (P<0.01) and volume of platelet participation levels (P<0.05).
