An analysis of the effects of electron-hole interactions on the electron spin relaxation in a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well at room temperature is presented. It was established that the electron-hole exchange interaction should contribute to the spin relaxation even at room temperature, as well as to the D'yakonov-Perel process.

Abstract

Polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNs), or inflammatory cells, may break down cartilage in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disorder that affects connective tissue, the structural or framework tissue of the body. A study examined the affect of activated PMNs on the loss of glycosaminoglycan, a substance found in connective tissue, from nasal cartilage. Loss of glycosaminoglycan increased significantly in the presence of PMNs. Glycosaminoglycan loss was caused by proteolytic enzymes, which degrade protein, rather than reactive forms of oxygen. High concentrations of PMNs are present at sites of chronic inflammation in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Activation of PMNs may cause the release of proteolytic enzymes that degrade cartilage.

type:Journal Article, Wannier-Stark localization in a pair of high quality lattice-matchedInGaAs/InP superlattices (SL) p-i-n diodes with wide (60 meV) and narrow(14 meV) electron miniband widths has been investigated by roomtemperature photocurrent (PC) response measurements. PC spectra as wellas PC versus reverse bias voltage characteristics of the SL samples exhibit aclear excitonic absorption edge redshifted due to the miniband formationand show distinct Stark ladder transitions, which evolve with the appliedelectric field. The transition energy fan diagrams are analyzed for the SLmodel potential structures using transfer matrix calculations. It is foundthat observed blueshifts of the absorption edge by decreasing the minibandwidth and by increasing the field exactly coincide with half of the transitionminiband width, thus providing the electroabsorption modulation withInGaAs/InP SL's. Abstract

The notion of organic molecular materials showing metallic properties, such as electric conductivity or ferromagnetism, started several decades ago as a mere dream of some members of the chemical community. The goal was to create an assembly of organic molecules or macromolecules containing only light elements (C, H, N, O, S, etc.) and yet possessing the electron/hole mobility or spin alignment that is inherent in typical metals or their oxides and different from the isolated molecular materials. Organic molecular conductors initially were developed during the 1960s, but the first examples of organic molecular magnets took several more decades to be discovered, owing to the more subtle and complex structural and electronic aspects of these materials. The flurry of activity in this field can be traced to the widely held belief that even the most sophisticated properties can be rationally designed by a systematic modification of organic molecular structures. This motivation was further fueled by increased synthetic capabilities, especially for obtaining large organic molecules with suitable structures and topologies, and also by the spectacular progress of supramolecular chemistry for materials development witnessed in recent years. Also noteworthy is the pioneering work performed in the 1960s by several physical organic chemists who unraveled different ways of aligning spins within open-shell molecules (i.e., triplet diradicals, carbenes, etc.), working against nature's tendency to align them in an antiparallel manner. Magnetic interactions between unpaired electrons, located on the singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs) of di- and polyradicals, or between the adjacent open-shell molecules in crystals, are a crucial issue in this evolving field. Thus, depending upon the symmetry, degeneracy,and topological characteristics of SOMOs and also on the mode of arrangement of the molecules in a crystal, the resulting interaction can align the neighboring spins parallel or antiparallel (see the introductory article by Miller and Epstein in this issue of MRS Bulletin).

Abstract

Following myocardial ischemia, initial reperfusion with whole blood impairs the recovery of ventricular function. The exact mechanisms underlying early myocardial reperfusion injury are not clear, but leukocytes play an important role. In this study, we tested if treating the initial blood reperfusate with a monoclonal antibody (CL26) against the leukocyte adhesion protein (CD18 would reduce the leukocyte contribution to early reperfusion injury. We reasoned that blocking CD18 would reduce the initial retention of leukocytes in the heart and thereby limit the inflammatory response. Rat hearts were isolated and perfused at constant flow with a red cell-rich solution (K2RBC). The perfusate was not recirculated. Baseline measures were made of coronary flow, perfusion pressure, and ventricular pump function. No-flow, normothermic ischemia was induced for 30 min, followed immediately by reperfusion, at the preischemic flowrate, with diluted whole blood (DWB, treated with either vehicle or CL26). Reperfusion was continued with K2RBC for 40 min more, during which postischemic measures were made. We found that the cardiac retention of leukocytes was not significantly different for the two groups, nor were the recoveries of ventricular function. Later in reperfusion (R35), the coronary blood flowrate and the coronary vascular resistances were not different; however, the recoveries of ventricular pump function were significantly different (+dP/dt @ R35 (%Pre-I): Vehicle: 27 +/- 9% (n = 8); CL26: 51 +/- 6% (n = 7); P0.05). Also, at R35, the voltage required to capture and pace the vehicle-treated hearts was significantly greater than the voltage required to pace the CL26 hearts (P0.05). Because the coronary flowrate and leukocyte retention were similar for both groups, the improved recovery observed in the CL26-treated group was not due to either improved flow or to reduced leukocyte retention. Rather, the findings suggest that the beneficial effect of antibody treatment was to attenuate step(s) in the acute inflammatory response that occurred after the initial deposition of leukocytes in the heart.
