Abstract

Objective According to a World Health Organization report, in 2016, 41 million young children globally were overweight or obese. The connection between parents' social capital and their children's health has been studied, but associations between parental social capital and children's weight are largely unexamined. Hence, we assessed the relationship between preschool children's weight and parents' social capital. Methods We used BMI assessment data for 357 children (46.5% girls; mean age 5.3 years) in Japan. We examined parents' structural and cognitive social capital using a self-report questionnaire. Results Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed associations between parents' social capital and children's BMI. Seventy-two (20.2%) of the children had poor BMI (body mass index; overweight or thin). Interpersonal trust was significantly associated with normal BMI in children after adjustment for all confounding factors (OR 2.68; 95% CI, 1.33-5.44; P = .006) and was independently associated with other social capital factors, including norm of reciprocity (OR 3.38; 95% CI, 1.68-6.79; P < .001) and trust in organization (OR 1.24; 95% CI, 1.09-1.42; P = .001). Conclusion Social capital factors were independently associated with each other. Abstract

Background: To prevent rehospitalization for heart failure (HF), patients need to be able to perceive physical changes that occur at the onset of HF exacerbation and seek early help. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a self-monitoring intervention on patients' perceptions of physical sensations during daily activities in the context of HF via a randomized controlled trial. Methods: Participants (N = 70) were randomly assigned to the intervention (received daily activity record-based self-monitoring intervention support; group A) or control (only explained the measured results from the records; group B) group. Group A reflected on and described the physical sensations in their daily activities within 1 month after discharge. Outcome measures were assessed at 1 month after the intervention using the European Heart Failure Self-care Behavior Scale, Evaluation Scale for Self-Monitoring by patients with Heart Failure, clinical events, physical activity, and sleep. Results: There was no significant difference in the change in the "asking for help" subscale score of the European Heart Failure Self-care Behavior Scale between the groups (+0.7 vs +0.4 points, P = .716). Group A had improved score on the self-monitoring subscale related to "concern about how movements affect body" from baseline (from 12.7 to 14.0 points, P = .026). There was no significant effect of self-monitoring intervention support on the first rehospitalization related to HF and all-cause death (log-rank χ²=0.432, P = .511). A significant difference in moderate-intensity physical activity between the groups was observed (+4.6 vs -0. 5 minutes, P = .029). Abstract

Little is known about the association between fatigue and physical activity in patients hospitalized with subacute stroke. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between fatigue and physical activity in patients hospitalized with subacute stroke. This cross-sectional study enrolled 244 consecutive patients with stroke who were admitted to a subacute rehabilitation ward at our hospital. We assessed fatigue with the Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) and used an accelerometer (Active style Pro HJA750-C, OMRON) to record the mean duration of sedentary behavior, light-intensity physical activity (LIPA), and moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA). We assessed all factors at 1 month after stroke. Multivariate linear regression analysis revealed the associations between FASscore and objectively measured physical activity. In total, we analyzed 85 patients. The duration of the sedentary behavior was significantly associated with the FAS score (β = 1.46, p = 0.037) and the Functional Balance Scale score (β = -1.35, p = 0.045). The LIPA time was significantly associated only with the FBS score (β = 1.38, p = 0.045), whereas MVPA was not associated with any variable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

43. Impact of Parents' Comprehensive Health Literacy on BMI in Children: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study in Japan

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Low-functional health literacy (HL) of parents influences poor child health outcomes. This study aimed to assess the relationship between comprehensive HL of parents and body mass index (BMI) of their children. METHODS: We enrolled 3- to 6-year-old preschool-aged children and their parents in this multicenter cross-sectional cohort study. We evaluated parents' comprehensive HL with the 14-item HL scale. Children's BMI categories were defined using International Obesity Task Force cutoffs according to age and sex. We analyzed differences in data between the high-HL group and the low-HL group and investigated the association between HL of parents and their children's BMI by multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The high-HL group comprised 208 (75.1%) children and the low-HL group comprised 69 (24.9%) children of whom 23 (8.3%) were overweight and 35 (12.6%) were thin. The low-HL group had more children with poor BMI than the high-HL group. Multivariate analysis showed an association between the low HL of parents and the poor BMI of their children after adjustment for all other confounding factors. CONCLUSIONS: Comprehensive HL of parents appears to affect the BMI of their children independently, suggesting that interventions to improve HL in parents are necessary.
