Single flux quantum (SFQ) digital logic has been proposed for the scalable control of next-generation superconducting-qubit arrays. In the initial implementation, SFQ-based gate fidelity was limited by quasiparticle (QP) poisoning induced by the dissipative on-chip SFQ driver circuit. In this work, we introduce a multichip-module architecture to suppress phonon-mediated QP poisoning. Here, the SFQ elements and qubits are fabricated on separate chips that are joined with In-bump bonds. We use interleaved randomized benchmarking to characterize the fidelity of SFQ-based gates and we demonstrate an error per Clifford gate of 1.2(1)%, an order-of-magnitude reduction over the gate error achieved in the initial realization of SFQ-based qubit control. We use purity benchmarking to quantify the contribution of incoherent error at 0.96(2)%; we attribute this error to photon-mediated QP poisoning mediated by the resonant millimeter-wave antenna modes of the qubit and SFQ-qubit coupler. We anticipate that a straightforward redesign of the SFQ driver circuit to limit the bandwidth of the SFQ pulses will eliminate this source of infidelity, allowing SFQ-based gates with error approaching approximate known theoretical limits, of order 0.1% for resonant sequences and 0.01% for more complex pulse sequences involving variable pulse-to-pulse separation.

Abstract We present the first performance results obtained with microwave multiplexed Transition Edge Sensors prototypes specifically designed for the HOLMES experiment, a project aimed at directly measuring the electron neutrino mass through the calorimetric measurement of the $$^{163}$$ 163 Ho electron capture spectrum. The detectors required for such an experiment feature a high energy resolution at the Q–value of the transition, around $$\sim $$ ∼ 2.8 keV, and a fast response time combined with the compatibility to be multiplexed in large arrays in order to collect a large statistics while keeping the pile-up contribution as small as possible. In addition, the design has to be suitable for future ion-implantation of $$^{163}$$ 163 Ho. The results obtained in these tests allowed us to identify the optimal detector design among several prototypes. The chosen detector achieved an energy resolution of (4.5 ± 0.3) eV on the chlorine K$$_\alpha $$ α line, at $$\sim $$ ∼ 2.6 keV, obtained with an exponential rise time of 14 $$\upmu $$ μ s. The achievements described in this paper pose a milestone for the HOLMES detectors, setting a baseline for the subsequent developments, aiming to the actual ion-implantation of the $$^{163}$$ 163 Ho nuclei. In the first section the HOLMES experiment is outlined along with its physics goal, while in the second section the HOLMES detectors are described; the experimental set-up and the calibration source used for the measurements described in this paper are reported in Sects. 3 and 4, respectively; finally, the details of the data analysis and the results obtained are reported in Sect. 6.

Abstract  We are developing a gamma-ray spectrometer for the analysis of nuclear materials based on an array of superconducting transition-edge-sensor microcalorimeters. The instrument will include eight columns of time-division-SQUID multiplexing circuitry capable of reading out 256 sensors. Our most recent sensors are bulk (1.5 mm square×0.25 mm thick) superconducting Sn absorbers glued to Mo/Cu bilayer thermometers. When fully populated, the active area of the spectrometer will be 5.76 cm2, and the maximum count rate of the array will approach 20 kHz. Thus, our spectrometer will be comparable to the state-of-the-art 100 keV high-purity-Ge detector in count rate and collecting area, but with an order of magnitude better energy resolution. Half the detectors will be optimized for operation up to 100 keV, and the other half for operation up to 200 keV. A version of the spectrometer with a partially populated detector array was delivered to Los Alamos National Laboratory in June, 2007. We describe the present status of that instrument. In addition, we review results from a prototype array of 14 detectors that achieved 47 eV average energy resolution (full width at half maximum at 103 keV) and 25 eV resolution in the best detector. Abstract  The EBIT Calorimeter Spectrometer (ECS) is currently being completed and will be installed at the EBIT facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in October 2007. The ECS will replace the smaller XRS/EBIT microcalorimeter spectrometer that has been in almost continuous operation since 2000. The XRS/EBIT was based on a spare laboratory cryostat and an engineering model detector system from the Suzaku/XRS observatory program. The new ECS spectrometer was built to be a low maintenance, high performance implanted silicon microcalorimeter spectrometer with 4 eV resolution at 6 keV, 32 detector channels, 10 μs event timing, and capable of uninterrupted acquisition sessions of over 60 hours at 50 mK. The XRS/EBIT program has been very successful, producing many results on topics such as laboratory astrophysics, atomic physics, nuclear physics, and calibration of the spectrometers for the National Ignition Facility. The ECS spectrometer will continue this work into the future with improved spectral resolution, integration times, and ease-of-use. We designed the ECS instrument with TES detectors in mind by using the same highly successful magnetic shielding as our laboratory TES cryostats. This design will lead to a future TES instrument at the LLNL EBIT. Here we discuss the legacy of the XRS/EBIT program, the performance of the new ECS spectrometer, and plans for a future TES instrument. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract  We have developed a multiplexed read-out for transition-edge sensors (TES) based on a hybrid time- and frequency-domain basis set, similar to that used in time-division multiple-access (TDMA) mobile phones. The hybrid basis set uses bandwidth more efficiently than microwave frequency-division SQUID multiplexing, making it possible to multiplex more detectors in each output line. The high open-loop bandwidth provided by our SQUID TDMA system also makes it possible to multiplex large arrays of fast, high dynamic range detectors such as fast x-ray calorimeters. In this approach, we embed the second-stage SQUID amplifier of our standard time-division multiplexer in an impedance matching circuit coupled to a broadband cryogenic high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) in a microwave reflectometer configuration. The input signals are flux coupled into the first-stage SQUID amplifiers whose signals are time-division multiplexed into the second-stage SQUID. Abstract  Alloys of Al lightly doped with Mn are tunable superconductors, potentially useful in normal-metal/insulator/superconductor refrigerators. The superconducting transition temperature varies with Mn concentration and the density of states is like a BCS superconductor with a reduced gap. We present results from superconducting tunnel junction measurements that demonstrate the BCS-like density of states. We discuss the limitations of our measurements based upon purity of the materials used to fabricate tunnel junctions, as well as our expectations for new measurements with cleaner materials. Abstract   We discuss the development of an array of superconducting Transition-Edge Sensor (TES) bolometers intended for use at millimeter wavelengths. Each bolometer in the array uses a proximity-effect TES sensing element and each has integrated Normal-Insulator-Superconductor (NIS) refrigerators to cool the bolometer below the reference bath temperature. The NIS refrigerators and bolometers are fabricated on a single Silicon substrate. Four short, thin and narrow legs suspend the millimeter wavelength radiation-absorbing element. The leg geometry is used to control and optimize the thermal conductance of the bolometer. Using the technology developed at NIST, we fabricated NIS refrigerators at the base of each of the suspension legs. These NIS refrigerators remove hot electrons by quantum-mechanical tunneling and should be capable of reducing the temperature of the biased (∼10 pW) bolometers by more than 100 mK when operating from a local thermal reservoir provided by a 3He system at ∼300 mK. This lower temperature at the bolometer will allow the detectors to approach background-limited performance despite the simple cryogenic system. In this paper we describe the progress toward the development of these detectors designed for use in observations at the 100 m Green Bank Telescope at 3 mm wavelength and the results of laboratory tests of a prototype detector. Abstract   Metallic magnetic calorimeters, where deposited energy is detected by measuring a temperature-dependent magnetization with a low-noise SQUID, remain a promising potential route to X-ray spectrometers with energy resolution approaching 1 eV. In this paper we describe our recent work toward array-compatible, high-resolution MMCs fabricated entirely using thin-film techniques. We describe a meander-style pickup loop designed for good coupling to high-efficiency, low noise SQUIDs, as well as considering various routes to a thin-film paramagnetic sensor. We also briefly overview the most promising technology for multiplexing arrays of non-dissipative metallic magnetic calorimeters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pulse tube refrigerators are a critical enabling technology for many disciplines that require low temperatures. These refrigerators dominate the total power consumption of most modern cryostats, including those that reach millikelvin temperatures using additional cooling stages. In state-of-the-art commercial pulse tube refrigerators, the acoustic coupling between the driving compressor and the refrigerator is fixed and optimized for operation at base temperature. We show that this optimization is incorrect during the cooldown process, which results in wasted power consumption by the compressor and slow cooldown speed. After developing analytic expressions that demonstrate the need for acoustic tuning as a function of temperature, we dynamically optimize the acoustics of a commercial pulse tube refrigerator and show that the cooldown speed can be increased to 1.7 to 3.5 times the original value. Acoustic power measurements show that loss mechanism(s)-and not the capacity of the compressor-limit the maximum cooling available at high temperatures, suggesting that even faster cooldown speeds can be achieved in the future. The Simons Observatory (SO) is a cosmic microwave background instrumentation suite in the Atacama Desert of Chile. More than 65,000 polarization-sensitive transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers will be fielded in the frequency range spanning 27 to 280 GHz, with three separate dichroic designs. The mid-frequency 90/150 GHz and ultra-high-frequency 220/280 GHz detector arrays, fabricated at NIST, account for 39 of 49 total detector modules and implement the feedhorn-fed orthomode transducer-coupled TES bolometer architecture. A robust production-level fabrication framework for these detector arrays and the monolithic DC/RF routing wafers has been developed, which includes single device prototyping, process monitoring techniques, in-process metrology, and cryogenic measurements of critical film properties. We present a method of creating high-density superconducting flexible wiring on flexible thin silicon substrates. The flexible wiring, called SOI flex , is created by depositing superconducting wiring on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer, selectively etching away the thicker silicon section handle layer, and bending the thinner silicon device layer. We show measurements of superconducting transition temperature and critical current for Mo, Nb, and Al on SOI flex. We discuss the expected advantages of SOI flex for low-temperature detector applications, as well as the role of stress and strain in bent silicon and niobium., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest The authors declare no competing interests.

The success of the CD8 T cell-mediated immune response against infections and tumors depends on the formation of a long-lived memory pool, and the protection of effector cells from exhaustion. The advent of checkpoint blockade therapy has significantly improved anti-tumor therapeutic outcomes by reversing CD8 T cell exhaustion, but fails to generate effector cells with memory potential. Here, using in vivo mouse models, we show that let-7 miRNAs determine CD8 T cell fate, where maintenance of let-7 expression during early cell activation results in memory CD8 T cell formation and tumor clearance. Conversely, let-7-deficiency promotes the generation of a terminal effector population that becomes vulnerable to exhaustion and cell death in immunosuppressive environments and fails to reject tumors. Mechanistically, let-7 restrains metabolic changes that occur during T cell activation through the inhibition of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway and production of reactive oxygen species, potent drivers of terminal differentiation and exhaustion. Thus, our results reveal a role for let-7 in the time-sensitive support of memory formation and the protection of effector cells from exhaustion. Following activation, CD4 T cells undergo metabolic and transcriptional changes as they respond to external cues and differentiate into T helper (Th) cells. T cells exhibit plasticity between Th phenotypes in highly inflammatory environments, such as colitis, in which high levels of IL-6 promote plasticity between regulatory T (Treg) cells and Th17 cells. Protein Kinase C theta (PKCθ) is a T cell-specific serine/threonine kinase that promotes Th17 differentiation while negatively regulating Treg differentiation. Liver kinase B1 (LKB1), also a serine/threonine kinase and encoded by Stk11, is necessary for Treg survival and function. Stk11 can be alternatively spliced to produce a short variant (Stk11 S ) by transcribing a cryptic exon. However, the contribution of Stk11 splice variants to Th cell differentiation has not been previously explored. Here we show that in Th17 cells, the heterogeneous ribonucleoprotein, hnRNPLL, mediates Stk11 splicing into its short splice variant, and that Stk11 S expression is diminished when Hnrnpll is depleted using siRNA knock-down approaches. We further show that PKCθ regulates hnRNPLL and, thus, Stk11 S expression in Th17 cells. We provide additional evidence that exposing induced (i)Tregs to IL-6 culminates in Stk11 splicing downstream of PKCθAltogether our data reveal a yet undescribed outside-in signaling pathway initiated by IL-6, that acts through PKCθ and hnRNPLL to regulate Stk11 splice variants and facilitate Th17 cell differentiation. We describe the newest generation of the SLAC Microresonator RF (SMuRF) electronics, a warm digital control and readout system for microwave-frequency resonator-based cryogenic detector and multiplexer systems, such as microwave superconducting quantum interference device multiplexers (μmux) or microwave kinetic inductance detectors. Ultra-sensitive measurements in particle physics and astronomy increasingly rely on large arrays of cryogenic sensors, which in turn necessitate highly multiplexed readout and accompanying room-temperature electronics. Microwave-frequency resonators are a popular tool for cryogenic multiplexing, with the potential to multiplex thousands of detector channels on one readout line. The SMuRF system provides the capability for reading out up to 3328 channels across a 4-8 GHz bandwidth. Notably, the SMuRF system is unique in its implementation of a closed-loop tone-tracking algorithm that minimizes RF power transmitted to the cold amplifier, substantially relaxing system linearity requirements and effective noise from intermodulation products. Here, we present a description of the hardware, firmware, and software systems of the SMuRF electronics, comparing achieved performance with science-driven design requirements. In particular, we focus on the case of large-channel-count, low-bandwidth applications, but the system has been easily reconfigured for high-bandwidth applications. The system described here has been successfully deployed in lab settings and field sites around the world and is baselined for use on upcoming large-scale observatories.

The second-stage regenerators of pulse tube refrigerators (PTRs) are routinely used to intercept heat loads without disturbing cooling at their base temperatures, often near 4 K. Gifford-McMahon cryocoolers (GMCs) have not yet demonstrated a similar capability to provide regenerator cooling, possibly because of the thermal resistance between their regenerator shell and core. Here we show that GMCs do have capacity to provide regenerator cooling when heat loads are applied directly on the outer regenerator shell, although to a lesser extent compared to PTRs of similar cooling capacity. For example, we intercepted a 900 mW heat load at 21.6 K using the second-stage regenerator of a GMC while only giving up 10 mW of cooling at 3 K (out of 270 mW). This performance may possibly be improved by optimizing heat exchange between heat source and regenerator shell. We provide detailed temperature profile measurements from both a GMC and a PTR while applying heat to the regenerators, showing distinct behavior between the two. We also show that for GMCs, the optimal location of heat injection should be farther from the cold end than for PTRs. Although the physical source of regenerator cooling is less clear for GMCs than it is for PTRs, a useful amount of cooling is available and warrants further study.

We have succeeded in operating a transition-edge sensor (TES) spectrometer and evaluating its performance at the SPring-8 synchrotron x-ray light source. The TES spectrometer consists of a 240 pixel National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) TES system, and 220 pixels are operated simultaneously with an energy resolution of 4 eV at 6 keV at a rate of ∼1 c/s pixel -1 . The tolerance for high count rates is evaluated in terms of energy resolution and live time fraction, leading to an empirical compromise of ∼2 × 10 3 c/s (all pixels) with an energy resolution of 5 eV at 6 keV. By utilizing the TES's wideband spectroscopic capability, simultaneous multi-element analysis is demonstrated for a standard sample. We conducted x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) analysis in fluorescence mode using the TES spectrometer. The excellent energy resolution of the TES enabled us to detect weak fluorescence lines from dilute samples and trace elements that have previously been difficult to resolve due to the nearly overlapping emission lines of other dominant elements. The neighboring lines of As Kα and Pb Lα2 of the standard sample were clearly resolved, and the XANES of Pb Lα2 was obtained. Moreover, the x-ray spectrum from the small amount of Fe in aerosols was distinguished from the spectrum of a blank target, which helps us to understand the targets and the environment. These results are the first important step for the application of high resolution TES-based spectroscopy at hard x-ray synchrotron facilities.

We report a femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopic study of size-dependent dynamics in nanocrystals (NCs) of Fe(pyz)Pt(CN)4. We observe that smaller NCs (123 or 78 nm cross section and <25 nm thickness) exhibit signatures of spin crossover (SCO) with time constants of ∼5-10 ps whereas larger NCs with 375 nm cross section and 43 nm thickness exhibit a weaker SCO signature accompanied by strong spectral shifting on a ∼20 ps time scale. For the small NCs, the fast dynamics appear to result from thermal promotion of residual low-spin states to high-spin states following nonradiative decay, and the size dependence is postulated to arise from differing high-spin vs low-spin fractions in domains residing in strained surface regions. The SCO is less efficient in larger NCs owing to their larger size and hence lower residual LS/HS fractions. Our results suggest that size-dependent dynamics can be controlled by tuning surface energy in NCs with dimensions below ∼25 nm for use in energy harvesting, spin switching, and other applications.

For experiments with high arrival rates, reliable identification of nearly-coincident events can be crucial. For calorimetric measurements to directly measure the neutrino mass such as HOLMES, unidentified pulse pile-ups are expected to be a leading source of experimental error. Although Wiener filtering can be used to recognize pile-up, it suffers errors due to pulse-shape variation from detector nonlinearity, readout dependence on sub-sample arrival times, and stability issues from the ill-posed deconvolution problem of recovering Dirac delta-functions from smooth data. Due to these factors, we have developed a processing method that exploits singular value decomposition to (1) separate single-pulse records from piled-up records in training data and (2) construct a model of single-pulse records that accounts for varying pulse shape with amplitude, arrival time, and baseline level, suitable for detecting nearly-coincident events. We show that the resulting processing advances can reduce the required performance specifications of the detectors and readout system or, equivalently, enable larger sensor arrays and better constraints on the neutrino mass.

The European Research Council has recently funded HOLMES, a new experiment to directly measure the neutrino mass. HOLMES will perform a calorimetric measurement of the energy released in the decay of [Formula: see text]Ho. The calorimetric measurement eliminates systematic uncertainties arising from the use of external beta sources, as in experiments with beta spectrometers. This measurement was proposed in 1982 by A. De Rujula and M. Lusignoli, but only recently the detector technological progress allowed to design a sensitive experiment. HOLMES will deploy a large array of low temperature microcalorimeters with implanted [Formula: see text]Ho nuclei. The resulting mass sensitivity will be as low as 0.4 eV. HOLMES will be an important step forward in the direct neutrino mass measurement with a calorimetric approach as an alternative to spectrometry. It will also establish the potential of this approach to extend the sensitivity down to 0.1 eV. We outline here the project with its technical challenges and perspectives.

The annual rate of out-of-hospital deliveries in Washington State increased from 1.6% in 1975, to 2.4% in 1977. Birth certificates, linked birth and death certificates files, and log books from tertiary referral hospitals were used to investigate this trend. As parity increased, rates of home delivery (HD) also increased (p less than 0.001). However, alternative birth center delivery (BCD) rates did not change with parity (p greater than 0.1). HD rates and BCD rates increased with birth weight (p less than 0.001). Obstetric professionals attended 91% of BCD as compared to 65% of HD. Fifty-four percent of the women in the BCD group had 10 or more prenatal visits compared to 40% in the HD group. Infant mortality rates were lower with BCD than with HD. However, our analysis of mortality was limited by countervailing biases inherent in the data. We concluded that out-of-hospital deliveries were a heterogeneous group that in future studies should be stratified into groups of birth center deliveries and home deliveries.
