The first step in the process of utilizing space resources is to identify them, localize them and assess the distribution, composition, and quantity of extra-terrestrial terrigenous material available [1], in other words the mapping of the so-called regolith or real soil according to others [2,3]. The latter will probably play an analogous role as soil does for our civilization on Earth for future extra-terrestrial human settlements. The creation of a lunar resource cartography requires to reach a consensus on the language used to communicate on the soil layers or “horizons”of the upper regolith. Such agreement is a prerequisite for communication, interpretation and classification of soils. On Earth, pedologists have developed an international nomenclature of soil horizons based on interpretative symbols which allow to immediately link soil description to properties and/or genesis of the described layers [4]. Its development during the 20th permits to develop pedological classification in parallel of the soil mapping process. For the Moon, we propose to use characteristics of the lunar regolith such as the Is/FeO maturity index of Morris [5] and the agglutinate content as a first attempt to differentiate soil horizons (see figure 1). Base on those, we propose a labelling system inspired on Earth’s pedology concept but adapted to the Moon context. We expect this work to serve as a starting point for discussions between the planetary scientists community and soil scientists with the aim of building the foundation and concepts of extra-terrestrial soil science for space resources, as already advocated by Cameron in 1963 [6]. Within the critical zone, regolith plays a key role in the fundamental hydrological functions of water collection, storage, mixing and release. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is recognized as a remarkable tool for characterizing the geometry and properties of the regolith, overcoming limitations inherent to conventional borehole-based investigations. For exploring shallow layers, a small electrode spacing (ES) will provide a denser set of apparent resistivity measurements of the subsurface. As this option is cumbersome and time-consuming, larger ES – albeit offering poorer shallow apparent resistivity data – is often preferred for large horizontal ERT surveys. To investigate the negative trade-off between larger ES and reduced accuracy of the inverted ERT images for shallow layers, we use a set of synthetic “conductive–resistive–conductive” three-layered soil–saprock/saprolite–bedrock models in combination with a reference field dataset. Our results suggest that an increase in ES causes a deterioration of the accuracy of the inverted ERT images in terms of both resistivity distribution and interface delineation and, most importantly, that this degradation increases sharply when the ES exceeds the thickness of the top subsurface layer. This finding, which is obvious for the characterization of shallow layers, is also relevant even when solely aiming for the characterization of deeper layers. We show that an oversized ES leads to overestimations of depth to bedrock and that this overestimation is even more important for subsurface structures with high resistivity contrast. To overcome this limitation, we propose adding interpolated levels of surficial apparent resistivity relying on a limited number of ERT profiles with a smaller ES. We demonstrate that our protocol significantly improves the accuracy of ERT profiles when using large ES, provided that the top layer has a rather constant thickness and resistivity. For the specific case of large-scale ERT surveys the proposed upgrading procedure is cost-effective in comparison to protocols based on small ES.

The Weierbach experimental catchment (0.45 km²) is the most instrumented and studied sub‐catchment in the Alzette River basin in Luxembourg. Within the last decade, it has matured towards an interdisciplinary critical zone observatory focusing on a better understanding of hydrological and hydro‐geochemical processes. The Weierbach catchment is embedded in an elevated sub‐horizontal plateau, characterized by slate bedrock and representative of the Ardennes Massif. Its climate is semi‐marine, with precipitation being rather evenly distributed throughout the year. Base flow is lowest from July to September, essentially due to higher losses through evapotranspiration in summer. The regolith is composed of Devonian slates, overlaid by Pleistocene slope deposits and entirely covered by forest with 70% deciduous and 30% coniferous trees. Since 2009, the Weierbach has been extensively equipped for continuously monitoring water fluxes and physico‐chemical parameters within different compartments of the critical zone. Additionally, these compartments are sampled fortnightly at several locations to analyze δ¹⁸O and δ²H isotopic composition of water including rainfall, throughfall, soil water, groundwater and streamwater. This ongoing monitoring and sampling programme is used for answering pressing questions related to fundamental catchment functions of water infiltration, storage, mixing and release in forest ecosystems. A recently started research line aims at investigating interactions between forest eco‐hydrosystems with the atmosphere and understanding how catchments will respond to a non‐stationary climate.

Fossil bioerosion traces at a new site of Les Bez (Jura Department) and those already known from Verrieres-de-Joux (Doubs Department) in the central French Jura record an ancient Miocene cliffed shoreline cut into Lower Cretaceous limestones. Both localities are at about 900 m above the present sea level. Caulostrepsis, Gastrochaenolites and Circolites are the ichnogenera identified at Les Bez, whereas only Gastrochaenolites is present at Verrieres-de-Joux. This ichnoassociation identifies the Entobia ichnofacies, which corresponds to the upper infralittoral marine environment, biologically associated with the biocenosis of photophilic algae. By means of digital analysis of high-resolution field images, the percentage of the surface affected by the erosive activity of polychaete worms, bivalves and echinoids has been calculated. This information permits a better evaluation of their biological activity, thus complementing the data on the number of specimens per surface area. The cliff preserved at Les Bez was more affected, showing Gastrochaenolites with diameters smaller than those at Verrieres. The Circolites–Caulostrepsis association is well developed at Les Bez, where polychaete borings are located within echinoid bowl-shaped pits with particular patterns, suggesting an ecological relationship between involved organisms. Moreover, the distribution of the borings along this outcrop is not uniform and digital analysis at three sections (A, B and C) suggests a lower and an upper zone developed on the outcrop under slightly different environmental conditions within the upper infralittoral. The exceptional preservation of the Les Bez fossil cliff-site demands protection in order to ensure its future existence and accessibility.

Weakening of the rock texture in a saprolite by weathering and further pedoplasmation results in the formation of a porous network and neoformed clays, which are the initial stages of pedogenesis, but the saprolite is likely the least studied compartment of the regolith. In this paper, the genesis of clays and their associated pore system was studied in gneiss saprolites. We investigated the saprolites of three regoliths in the Atlantic Forest Biome in northeast Brazil and used optical and electron microscopy to depict the clay–pore morphology. To assess the mobility of clays, we also determined the amounts of water–dispersible and total clay. The total chemical composition (SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2O, TiO2 and P2O5), exchangeable cations (Al+ 3, Ca+ 2, Mg+ 2, K+ and Na+), available P, capacity for saprolites to exchange cations and secondary forms of iron (Fed and Feo) were also measured. Micromorphological analyses showed that the most frequent pore types were channels and fissures. Channels occurred in the more weathered saprolite layers, which were identified according to the weathering indexes, and the clay–sized minerals found in the saprolite were illite, kaolinite, iron oxides, feldspar and quartz. The weathering of biotite and green hornblende formed an Fe–rich clay, and the weathering of feldspars formed an Al–rich clay. Secondary clays were accumulated at the mineral surfaces, pseudomorphs, clay infillings and clay coatings. The clay coatings are formed by two layers, i.e., the first clay layer was formed by an Fe–rich clay, and the second layer was formed by an Al–rich clay. Peculiar features named “doughnut–shaped holdfasts” were described in the clay cutans. The capacity for saprolites to exchange cations was similar to that in the shallower soils, which was environmentally relevant to the adsorption of plant nutrients, e.g., Ca+ 2, Mg+ 2 and K+, and potentially toxic elements, e.g., Al+ 3.

Double peak hydrographs are widespread phenomena but poorly understood mechanistically. In many cases, saturation-excess overland flow in the near-stream areas is assumed to control the initial peak, while the delayed peak is explained by subsurface flow in the soil or sediment cover or groundwater flow on fractured bedrock. Here we explore the mechanisms that control the generation of double peak hydrographs in a forested headwater catchment. We made use of the extensive high-resolution hydrometric time series collected in the catchment to estimate catchment storage and causal linkages. We found that double peak hydrographs occurred only after a certain amount of catchment storage was exceeded. The amount of this storage threshold was consistent over a 3-year period. The non-linear relationship between storage and discharge led to hysteretic relationships between both variables, and these hysteretic relationships were different for the different hydrograph types (single or double peak hydrographs). Discharge peaked before catchment storage during single peak hydrographs suggesting that single peaks were mainly generated by water quickly reaching the stream during precipitation pulses. It was catchment storage that peaked first during double peak hydrographs and consequently generated the delayed peak in the hydrograph. Our results also showed that double peak hydrographs were controlled in different proportions by contrasting landscape units (defined along a hillslope sequence). Hillslopes were connected to the stream at low discharge values, whereas the plateau dominated discharge generation when storage reached a certain threshold value.

In the history of alluvium and colluvium, the definitions have been shifted and rearranged several times, and this evolution is ongoing. Although field books, textbooks, and dictionaries provide standardized references, the authors of those definitions must wrestle with a wide variety of previous definitions, especially for colluvium. Contributing to this challenge is the need for Earth scientists to match available terminology to fit specific cases, which has resulting in the stretching of definitions to the point of overlap and sometimes contradiction. Alluvium was first used to describe gradual and imperceptible deposition of new earth material along rivers by floods. In the 19th century, as coarse, alluvium-like sediment in higher landscape positions was unlikely deposited by annual flooding, geologists explained those “older alluvium” deposits by the biblical deluge and named such materials diluvium. Although not the original definition, cases where alluvium and diluvium could not be distinguished, were named colluvium. Later, colluvial soils replaced ‘overplacement soils’ to describe regolith that had been transported down slope by mass-gravity processes. Concurrently other scientists used colluvium to describe deposits from slope wash. Modern definitions tend to connect to one, or more frequently both, of those concepts. The resulting spectrum of definitions presents the potential for confusion and miscommunication. This pattern was observed in a survey of 376 Earth scientists who generally agreed with defining colluvium as produced by mass-gravity-driven transport on steep slopes and alluvium as produced by water-driven transport on floodplains. However, diverse perspectives were evident for the spectrum between those two end members. This paper synthesizes the history, the logic, current perspectives, and potential strategies going forward.

Within the Critical Zone, regolith plays a key role in the fundamental hydrological function of water collection, storage, mixing and release. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) is recognized as a remarkable tool for characterizing the geometry and properties of the regolith, overcoming limitations inherent to conventional borehole-based investigations. However, ERT measurements with a high vertical resolution remain restricted to shallow depths, essentially due to the requirement of small electrode spacing increments (ESI). Under these circumstances, the use of ERT measurements for large horizontal surveys remains cumbersome and time-consuming. Here we focus on the need to optimize the ESI parameter in order to adequately characterize the subsurface fabric. We use a set of synthetic three-layered soil–saprock/saprolite–bedrock models in combination with a field dataset. We demonstrate that oversized ESI can significantly affect our perception of shallow subsurface structures by missing important layers and increasing the ill-posed inverse problem effects. More precisely, we document how a thin surficial layer can influence inverted ERT results and cause a resistivity bias, both at the surface and at deeper horizons. To overcome this limitation, we propose adding interpolated levels of surficial apparent resistivity based on a limited number of ERT profiles with small ESI. We demonstrate that our protocol significantly improves the accuracy of ERT profiles based on large ESI. Our protocol is time and cost efficient – especially in the case of large-scale ERT surveys.

Subsurface flow is often recognized as a dominant runoff generation process. However, observing subsurface properties, and understanding how they control flow pathways, remains challenging. This paper investigates how surface slope and bedrock cleavage control subsurface flow pathways in a slate bedrock headwater catchment in Luxembourg, characterised by a double-peak streamflow response. We use a range of experimental techniques, including field observations of soil and bedrock characteristics, and a sprinkling experiment at a site located 40 m upslope from the stream channel. The sprinkling experiment uses Br- as a tracer, which is measured at a well downslope from the plot and at various locations along the stream, together with well and stream hydrometric responses. The sprinkling experiment is used to estimate velocities and celerities, which in turn are used to infer flow pathways. Our results indicate that the single or first peak of double-peak events is rainfall-driven (controlled by rainfall) while the second peak is storage-driven (controlled by storage). The comparison between velocity and celerity estimates suggests a fast flowpath component connecting the hillslope to the stream, but velocity information was too scarce to fully support such a hypothesis. In addition, different estimates of celerities suggest a seasonal influence of both rainfall intensity rate and residual water storage on the celerity responses at the hillslope scale. At the catchment outlet, the estimated of the total mass of Br- recovered in the stream was about 2.5% of the application. Further downstream, the estimate mass of Br- was about 4.0% of the application. This demonstrates that flowpaths do not appear to align with the slope gradient. In contrast, they appear to follow the strike of the bedrock cleavage. Our results have expanded our understanding of the importance of the subsurface, in particular the underlying bedrock systems, and the importance of cleavage orientation, as well as topography, in controlling subsurface flow direction in this catchment.

As soil surveys were traditionally conducted in support of agriculture, soil classification tended to focus on upper soil horizons and their characteristics. However, when dealing with environmental issues – such as vegetation ecology or water quality – an integrated knowledge of the soil, soil-to-substratum, and deeper substratum continuum is required. In both World Reference Base for soil resources (WRB) and Soil Taxonomy (ST), the lower boundary for soil classification is arbitrarily set at 2 m, including weathered and continuous rock. However, as soil classification hinges on diagnostic horizons and characteristics, which often occur within the first 100 cm, collecting data on the subsolum is often neglected. We propose a classification system of the subsolum , the structure of which is inspired by WRB. We define Regolite , Saprolite , Saprock and Bedrock as four subsolum reference groups corresponding to different weathering stages. Intergrades of these reference groups can be qualified with principal qualifiers, while morphologic and lithologic characteristics can be presented with supplementary qualifiers. The proposed subsolum classification system is not intended to substitute geological surveys, but rather to complement existing soil classification systems such that at least the whole 2 m can be categorized. Still, whenever desired the system can also be used for deeper materials.

Diatoms are unicellular eukaryotic algae that are widely distributed in aquatic environments. In particular, their presence is abundant in stream flows, whereas the instance and transport of cells through subsurface flow is controversial. In this work, we study the transport of diatoms through soils by designing laboratory percolation experiments on undisturbed loamy and sandy soil cores. To label diatom tracers and enhance their detectability, we develop protocols to functionalize frustules of purified diatomite and Conticribra weissflogii cultures with rhodamine 123 and 2-(4-pyridyl)-5[4-dimethylaminoethyl-aminocarbamoyl)-methoxy]phenyloxazole, respectively. Labelled diatoms demonstrate good detectability and resilience under weathering agents. We execute percolation experiments for maximum time domains of approximately 600 min where volumes of water up to 3600 ml are deployed on the soil core surface. Under such experimental conditions, fluorescent diatoms are not recovered in samples of percolated material as per microscopy and spectrofluorometry. While further field studies are needed to fully investigate diatom transport, our findings shed new light on the potential of using biotic tracers for surface hydrological processes. Carbonate weathering mantles, like terra fusca , are common in Europe but their formation and evolution is still badly understood. We propose to combine geological, mineralogical and pedological knowledge with trace element and isotope data of a weathering mantle as a novel approach to understand the evolution of terra fuscas . Sr–Nd–Pb isotopes and rare earth element (REE) contents were analyzed in a cambisol developing on a typical terra fusca on top of a condensed Bajocian limestone-marl succession from the eastern side of the Paris Basin. The isotope data, REE distribution patterns and mass balance calculations suggest that the cambisol mirrors the trace element enrichments present in this carbonate lithology, which are exceptionally high compared to global average carbonate. The deeper soil horizons are strongly enriched not only in REE (ΣREE: 2640 ppm) but also in redox-sensitive elements such as Fe (44 wt.%), V (1000 ppm), Cr (700 ppm), Zn (550 ppm), As (260 ppm), Co (45 ppm) and Cd (2.4 ppm). The trace element distribution patterns of the carbonate bedrock are similar to those of the soil suggesting their close genetic relationships. Sr–Nd–Pb isotope data allow to identify four principal components in the soil: a silicate-rich pool close to the surface, a leachable REE enriched pool at the bottom of the soil profile, the limestone on which the weathering profile developed and an anthropogenic, atmosphere-derived component detected in the soil leachates of the uppermost soil horizon. The leachable phases are mainly secondary carbonate-bearing REE phases such as bastnaesite ((X) Ca(CO 3 ) 2 F) (for X: Ce, La and Nd). The isotope data and trace element distribution patterns indicate that at least four geological and environmental events impacted the chemical and isotopical compositions of the soil system: 1. An oxygen-deficient diagenetic or hydrothermal event caused trace metal enrichments in the Bajocian limestone-marls. 2. Carbonate dissolution caused the enrichment of detrital silicate phases and authigenic REE-bearing residual phases – e.g. marine authigenic fluorapatites and bastnaesite – in the newly formed condensed horizons. 3. Dissolution/precipitation of metastable bastnaesite phases and downward migration of the REE during soil formation. 4. Overprinting of the chemical and isotopical compositions of the uppermost soil horizon by recent atmospheric depositions.

International audience; This article is an as simple as possible key of classification of terrestrial (aerobic, not submerged) topsoils (organic and organic-mineral series of soil horizons). Based on the introduction exposed in Humusica 1, article 1, and using vocabulary and definitions listed in article 4, a classification is proposed for better understanding the biological functioning of the soil, partially disclosing the process of litter digestion. Five types of terrestrial topsoils, called terrestrial humus systems, are described and illustrated with the help of photographs. Within each humus system, 3–4 humus forms are also revealed, corresponding to similar series of soil horizons generated in a relatively homogeneous environment whose range of ecological factors is not so large to overstep and cause the genesis of another different humus system. The article ends with a figure that shows the relationship between Tangel and Amphi humus systems, and a dichotomous key of classification that one can easily print and bring in the field for practicing humus classification.

International audience; Terms and concepts have been defined in Humusica 1, article 1 and the functioning of humus systems has been discussed in Humusica 1, article 2. Here a short overview of the matter, showing humus systems in their environment, is provided for beginners, before making field investigations. The present work is intended as a part of the field manual (Humusica 1 and 2), an illustrated, easy-to-use application tool for humus systems classification, helpful even for not (yet) expert pedologists. The present article gives also a fast look at the classification, sharing Terrestrial, Histic, Aqueous and Para humus systems, every group being defined by its characteristics set in synthetic tables, and suggests a step-by-step approach allowing everyone to classify and investigate humus systems and forms.

International audience; The Special Issue Humusica 1 corresponds to a field guide for the classification of terrestrial humus systems and forms. The present first article of the issue defines vocabulary, objects and concepts necessary for: (a) field investigation, (b) understanding the process of classification, (c) assigning ecological significance to the defined morpho-functional units, (d) discussing and exchanging scientific data about humus systems. The article starts with general considerations, as the necessity humans have to classify natural objects for sharing ideas and information on them. Then the article focuses on soil as functional element of every ecosystem. Historical and recently published international definitions of soil are reported and compared to the more biological definition of the authors of the paper. Once the concept “soil” is clarified, the soil profile is shared in three new sub-units, for further specialised investigations. The superficial and organic-rich sub-unit is labelled Humipedon. In the rest of the article, authors explain the different constituents of a general humipedon, introducing even novice soil scientists to field practice and topsoil observation. A general overview of the variety of humipedons that one may expect to find all over planet Earth, classified in humus systems and forms, concludes the article.

International audience; Planet Earth is covered by very common Terrestrial (not submersed), Histic (peats) and Aqueous (tidal) humipedons. Beside these typical topsoils there are other more discrete humipedons, generated by the interaction of mineral matter with microorganisms, fungi and small plants (algae, lichens and mosses). In some cases roots and their symbionts can be a driving force of litter biotransformation, in other cases a large amount of decaying wood accommodates particular organisms which interfere with and change the normal process of litter decomposition. Particular microorganisms inhabit submerged sediments or extreme environments and can generate specialised humipedons with grey-black or even astonishingly flashing colours. We describe all these common but still unknown humipedons, defining diagnostic horizons and proposing a first morpho-functional classification, which still has to be improved. At the end of the article, the hypothesis of evolving and interconnected Cosmo, Aero, Hydro, Humi, Co, Litho and Geopedons (related to the microbiota) is formulated as a speculative curiosity.

International audience; Agro humus systems correspond to agricultural humipedons. Specific terms and diagnostic horizons are defined and topsoil profiles are described. With this new vocabulary, which focuses on the biological structure of the A horizon, we can compare these humipedons with their original natural expression. Under human pressure for agricultural purposes, natural humipedons evolve toward anthropic Mull (See Humusica 1, articles 5 and 6 for natural humus horizons) or Amphi (Mull with layers of still not incorporated OH organic horizons) humus systems. In each humus system, we define a few humus forms in order to estimate the biological health of the soil, with a rapid observation realisable in the field by the naked eye. Histic anthropic Anmoor is also possible, as well as Hydro or Epihistic intergrades to Terrestrial systems. WRB qualifiers and Soil Taxonomy subgroup adjectives are reported at the end of the article and can be used for a more detailed classification.

International audience; In this article, we present the Terrestrial intergrades from never or only few days submersed humipedons, without permanent hydromorphic signs, until humipedons with presence of signs of partial asphyxia. Specific terms are defined and diagnostic horizons illustrated, both with the help of text explanations and photographs. The article ends with a table working as a classification field key.

The synthesis of experimental understanding of catchment behaviour and its translation into qualitative perceptual models is an important objective of hydrological sciences. We explore this challenge by examining the cumulative understanding of the hydrology of three experimental catchments and how it evolves through the application of different investigation techniques. The case study considers the Huewelerbach, Weierbach and Wollefsbach headwater catchments of the Attert basin in Luxembourg. Subsurface investigations including bore holes and pits, analysis of soil samples and Electrical Resistivity Tomography measurements are presented and discussed. Streamflow and tracer data are used to gain further insights into the streamflow dynamics of the catchments, using end-member mixing analysis and hydrograph separation based on dissolved silica and electrical conductivity. We show that the streamflow generating processes in all three catchments are controlled primarily by the subsolum and underlying bedrock. In the Huewelerbach, the permeable sandstone formation supports a stable groundwater component with little seasonality, which reaches the stream through a series of sources at the contact zone with the impermeable marls formation. In the Weierbach, the schist formation is relatively impermeable and supports a ‘fill and spill’-type of flow mechanism; during wet conditions, it produces a delayed response dominated by pre-event water. In the Wollefsbach, the impermeable marls formation is responsible for a saturation-excess runoff generating process, producing a fast and highly seasonal response dominated by event water. The distinct streamflow generating processes of the three catchments are represented qualitatively using perceptual models. The perceptual models are in turn translated into quantitative conceptual models, which simulate the hydrological processes using networks of connected reservoirs and transfer functions. More generally, the paper illustrates the evolution of perceptual models based on experimental fieldwork data, the translation of perceptual models into conceptual models and the value of different types of data for processes understanding and model representation. Regoliths encompass different materials from the fresh bedrock to the top of the organic horizons. The occurrence and evolution of these materials are determined by deposition, erosion and weathering processes that are specific for each region. The origin and interaction of the regolith layers are still important issues in the study of critical zone functioning. Studies that attempt to understand the processes responsible for the structure and the evolution of regoliths often focus either on the soil or on the bedrock compartment, and often from a narrowly focused approach using just a single tool such as major element patterns or mineralogy. This limits the understanding of the complete regolith composition and evolution. The present study proposes the combination of mineralogy, major and trace element concentrations, and Sr-Nd-Pb-U isotopes as an extremely useful procedure for tracking the spatial and temporal origin of regolith materials and understanding their stratification. This multi-tracer approach was applied on a regolith profile from the south-western edge of the Rhenish Massif, which is characterised by the occurrence of slate bedrocks and overlying Pleistocene Periglacial Slope Deposits (PPSD). The data allowed the differentiation of three compartments within the regolith: 1) the organic compartment, where low (206)pb/(207)pb and Sr-87/Sr-86 isotopic ratios reflected the impact of atmosphere-derived components; 2) the PPSD compartment, whose upper horizons were characterised by the presence of atmosphere-derived particles rich in Cd, Sn, Sb, Hg and Pb and by relatively low Pb-206/Pb-207 and Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios, whereas the lower horizons showed Nb enrichments in their matrix and a mineralogical composition pointing to ancient volcanic events; and 3) the weathered slate compartment, whose weathering progression and genetic relationship with the PPSD were particularly well tracked with Sr-87/Sr-86 and Nd-143/Nd-144 isotope ratios, ((UU)-U-234-U-/238) activity ratios and positive Ce anomalies. The results prove the efficiency of radiogenic isotope measurements combined with the analysis of major and trace elements to complete regolith studies. Moreover, these isotopes and elements are shown to be potential geochemical tracers of exchange processes at the water-mineral interface. This approach allows for the first time the description of an evolution scheme of a complete slate regolith, which covers a large part of the Rhenish Massif.

The conference will cover areas like Soils – Our Common Future” stresses the vital interconnection between soil and life, as well as its importance for the future of the human society.; International audience; The survey of few main morphological soil aggregates (with intrinsic biological, chemical and physical contents) reveals the existence of different humus systems. Recognizable by naked eyes in the field, each humus system is confined in an ecological frame (climate, vegetation, substrate and soil) and results from a specific process of plants and soil coevolution. The scope of this cooperation is to implement and store in the soil system a maximum of energy fixed in organic-mineral aggregates. The goal is reached thanks to different humus systems that allow the storage in the soil of organic matter, whose availability is controlled by plants and soil organisms in each given ecological frames. The process may be studied even in anthropic ecosystem, as productive agricultural crops, by comparison with similar but more natural soils. The final slides are dedicated to the presentation of a field manual under publication, in which the main humus systems and forms covering our planet have been illustrated.

Three different statistical models were used to regionalize the winter stormflow coefficient for mesoscale basins of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the neighbouring Rhineland Palatinate (Germany). The methodology is derived from a previous study, in which winter stormflow coefficients were regionalized for the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg only. The models are based on regression analysis and it is shown that model performances do not differ considerably between parsimoniously and heavily parameterized models. Next, a regionalization procedure based on a raster grid was performed, producing a qualitative grid-based analysis of runoff-producing areas for the mesoscale. The winter runoff coefficient turned out to be highly correlated with the permeability of the lithology, yet not with basin area. The grid appeared to be useful in merging basin characteristics, which were used in a statistical model to describe the winter stormflow coefficients.

In this study two approaches are used to predict winter storm flow coefficients in meso-scale basins (10 km² to 1000 km²) with a view to regionalization. The winter storm flow coefficient corresponds to the ratio between direct discharge and rainfall. It is basin specific and supposed to give an integrated response to rainfall. The two approaches, which used the permeability of the substratum and dominating runoff generation processes as basin attributes are compared. The study area is the Rhineland Palatinate and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the study focuses on the Nahe basin and its 16 sub-basins (Rhineland Palatinate). For the comparison, three statistical models were derived by means of regression analysis. The models used the winter storm flow coefficient as the dependent variable; the independent variables were the permeability of the substratum, preliminary derived dominating runoff generation processes and a combination of both. It is demonstrated that the permeability and the preliminary derived processes carry different layers of information. Cross-validation and statistical tests were used to determine and evaluate model differences. The cross-validation resulted in a best model performance for the model that used both parameters, followed by the model that used the dominant runoff generation processes. From the statistical tests it was concluded that the models come from different populations, carrying different information layers. Analysis of the residuals of the models indicated that the permeability and runoff generation processes did provide complementary information. Simple linear models appeared to perform well in describing the winter storm flow coefficient at the meso-scale when a combination of the permeability of the substratum and dominating runoff generation processes served as independent parameters.

The dominant processes concept was used to develop a regionally applicable rainfall—runoff model. The first-order runoff processes are identified through a combination of field investigations, physico-geographical analysis of the research area, the Alzette River basin in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, and discharge data series analysis. Lithology appeared to be the major source of discrepancy in hydrological behaviour over the total area. As a result, the hydrological behaviour of each lithological substratum was characterized and conceptualized into a parsimonious model structure. The runoff signals were calibrated against the hourly-recorded discharge series of eight sub-basins, with parameter sensitivity and correlation analysis outlining the need for minor corrections to the model structure. Validation against another set of 10 sub-basins showed good results for the regional parameter set, with an average loss in efficiency (R eff) of 0.04, compared to the reference model, with a mean R eff o...

Changes in spatio-temporal rainfall patterns have an effect on the hydrological behavior of river basins, the magnitude of the effects depending among others on the physiographic basin characteristics. To assess climate and discharge fluctuations, a visualization tool was developed as a contribution to exploratory data analysis. The tool combined statistical tests of hydro-climatological variables with physiographic basin characteristics. Test results agree with previous studies and suggested a relationship between rainfall, discharge and mean date of the annual maximum discharge on the one the hand and lithology, altitude and west to east positioning of the basins on the other hand. The visualization tool capable of combining the statistical test results with the geologic and topographic configuration of the study area and allowed a reflection on the hydro-climatological as well as spatio-temporal behavior of meso-scale basins by means of exploratory data analysis.

Legacy soil data have been produced over 70 years in nearly all countries of the world. Unfortunately, data, information and knowledge are still currently fragmented and at risk of getting lost if they remain in a paper format. To process this legacy data into consistent, spatially explicit and continuous global soil information, data are being rescued and compiled into databases. Thousands of soil survey reports and maps have been scanned and made available online. The soil profile data reported by these data sources have been captured and compiled into databases. The total number of soil profiles rescued in the selected countries is about 800,000. Currently, data for 117, 000 profiles are compiled and harmonized according to GlobalSoilMap specifications in a world level database (WoSIS). The results presented at the country level are likely to be an underestimate. The majority of soil data is still not rescued and this effort should be pursued. The data have been used to produce soil property maps. We discuss the pro and cons of top-down and bottom-up approaches to produce such maps and we stress their complementarity. We give examples of success stories. The first global soil property maps using rescued data were produced by a top-down approach and were released at a limited resolution of 1 km in 2014, followed by an update at a resolution of 250 m in 2017. By the end of 2020, we aim to deliver the first worldwide product that fully meets the GlobalSoilMap specifications.
