Abstract A novel programmable implantable neurostimulation platform based on photonic power transfer has been developed for various clinical applications with the main focus of being safe to use with MRI scanners. The wires usually conveying electrical current from the neurostimulator to the electrodes are replaced by optical fibers. Photovoltaic cells at the tip of the fibers convert laser light to biphasic electrical impulses together with feedback signals with 54% efficiency. Furthermore, a biocompatible, implantable and ultra-flexible optical lead was developed including custom optical fibers. The neurostimulator platform incorporates advanced signal processing and optical physiological sensing capabilities thanks to a hermetically sealed transparent nonmetallic casing. Skin transparency also allowed the development of a high-speed optical transcutaneous communication channel. This implantable neurostimulation platform was first adapted to a vagus nerve stimulator for the treatment of epilepsy. This neurostimulator has been designed to fulfill the requirements of a class III long-term implantable medical device. It has been proven compliant with standard ISO/TS10974 for 1.5 T and 3 T MRI scanners. The device poses no related threat and patients can safely undergo MRI without specific or additional precautions. Especially, the RF induced heating near the implant remains below 2 °C whatever the MRI settings used. The main features of this unique advanced neurostimulator and its architecture are presented. Its functional performance is evaluated, and results are described with a focus on optoelectronics aspects and MRI safety.

Abstract In this paper we present random walk based solutions to diffusion in semi-permeable layered media with varying diffusivity. We propose a novel transit model for solving the interaction of random walkers with a membrane. This hybrid model is based on treating the membrane permeability and the step change in diffusion coefficient as two interactions separated by an infinitesimally small layer. By conducting an extensive analytical flux analysis, the performance of our hybrid model is compared with a commonly used membrane transit model (reference model). Numerical simulations demonstrate the limitations of the reference model in dealing with step changes in diffusivity and show the capability of the hybrid model to overcome this limitation and to offer substantial gains in computational efficiency. The suitability of both random walk transit models for the application to simulations of diffusion tensor cardiovascular magnetic resonance (DT-CMR) imaging is assessed in a histology-based domain relevant to DT-CMR. In order to demonstrate the usefulness of the new hybrid model for other possible applications, we also consider a larger range of permeabilities beyond those commonly found in biological tissues.

The Slutsky equation, central in consumer choice theory, is derived from the usual hypotheses underlying most standard models in Economics, such as full rationality, homogeneity, and absence of interactions. We present a statistical physics framework that allows us to relax such assumptions. We first derive a general fluctuation-response formula that relates the Slutsky matrix to spontaneous fluctuations of consumption rather than to response to changing prices and budget. We then show that, within our hypotheses, the symmetry of the Slutsky matrix remains valid even when agents are only boundedly rational but non-interacting. We finally propose an ‘animal spirit’ model where agents are influenced by the choice of others, leading to a phase transition beyond which consumption is dominated by herding (or ‘fashion’) effects. In this case, the individual Slutsky matrix is no longer symmetric, even for fully rational agents. The vicinity of the transition features a peak in asymmetry.

Ultra high resolution lithography (sub-15 nm) could be developed using the directed self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs), for which a high incompatibility – i.e. high-χ – between the blocks is necessary. Here we present an industrial compatible scheme of the annealing processes performed on different PS-b-PDMS BCPs, presenting the horizontal cylindrical morphology to form line/space patterns by graphoepitaxy. For BCPs with a larger molecular weight (period 15 nm), we compare the annealing performances of different solvents with an emphasis on solvents satisfying the manufacturing requirements, where butylacetate appears to be well suited. Furthermore, we show that a lower molecular weight BCP (period 10 nm) presents a good self-assembly by thermal annealing. Both annealing processes developed here are fully integrable in a microelectronics environment for high resolution lithography. A highly anisotropic toughness behavior has been revealed on a forged AA6061 aluminum alloy by toughness tests with CT specimens. The toughness values with specimens loaded on the longitudinal direction are larger than that loaded on the transverse direction due to the anisotropic shape and distribution of coarse precipitates induced by the morphological anisotropy of grains during forging process. Synchrotron radiation computed tomography analysis on as-received material and arrested cracks revealed different fracture modes for the two loading configurations. The damage mechanism has been validated by finite element simulations based on the Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman micromechanical damage model with different sets of damage parameters for the two loading configurations obtained from quantitative void volume fraction analysis on SRCT data, in situ SEM experiments, and SRCT microstructural analysis.
