Storyline drawings are a popular visualization of interactions of a set of characters over time, e.g., to show participants of scenes in a book or movie. Characters are represented as $x$-monotone curves that converge vertically for interactions and diverge otherwise. Combinatorially, the task of computing storyline drawings reduces to finding a sequence of permutations of the character curves for the different time points, with the primary objective being crossing minimization of the induced character trajectories. In this paper, we revisit exact integer linear programming (ILP) approaches for this NP-hard problem. By enriching previous formulations with additional problem-specific insights and new heuristics, we obtain exact solutions for an extended new benchmark set of larger and more complex instances than had been used before. Our experiments show that our enriched formulations lead to better performing algorithms when compared to state-of-the-art modelling techniques. In particular, our best algorithms are on average 2.6-3.2 times faster than the state-of-the-art and succeed in solving complex instances that could not be solved before within the given time limit. In this article we explore a symplectic packing problem where the targets and domains are $2n$-dimensional symplectic manifolds. We work in the context where the manifolds have first homology group equal to $\mathbb{Z}^n$, and we require the embeddings to induce isomorphisms between first homology groups. In this case, Maley, Mastrangeli and Traynor showed that the problem can be reduced to a combinatorial optimization problem, namely packing certain allowable simplices into a given standard simplex. They designed a computer program and presented computational results. In particular, they determined the simplex packing widths in dimension four for up to $k=12$ simplices, along with lower bounds for higher values of $k$. We present a modified algorithmic approach that allows us to determine the $k$-simplex packing widths for up to $k = 13$ simplices in dimension four and up to $k = 8$ simplices in dimension six. Quantum annealing is getting increasing attention in combinatorial optimization. The quantum processing unit by D-Wave is constructed to approximately solve Ising models on so-called Chimera graphs. Ising models are equivalent to quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) problems and maximum cut problems on the associated graphs. We have tailored branch-and-cut as well as semidefinite programming algorithms for solving Ising models for Chimera graphs to provable optimality and use the strength of these approaches for comparing our solution values to those obtained on the current quantum annealing machine D-Wave 2000Q. This allows for the assessment of the quality of solutions produced by the D-Wave hardware. It has been a matter of discussion in the literature how well the D-Wave hardware performs at its native task, and our experiments shed some more light on this issue.

We consider the coordinate assignment phase of the well known Sugiyama framework for drawing directed graphs in a hierarchical style. The extensive literature in this area has given comparatively little attention to a prescribed width of the drawing. We present a minimum cost flow formulation that supports prescribed width and optionally other criteria like lower and upper bounds on the distance of neighbouring nodes in a layer or enforced vertical edges segments. Compacting orthogonal drawings is a challenging task. Usually algorithms try to compute drawings with small area or edge length while preserving the underlying orthogonal shape. We present a one-dimensional compaction algorithm that alters the orthogonal shape of edges for better geometric results. An experimental evaluation shows that we were able to reduce the total edge length and the drawing area, but at the expense of additional bends., Comment: Submitted to 25th International Symposium on Graph Drawing & Network Visualization

A storyline visualization is a layout that represents the temporal dynamics of social interactions along time by the convergence of chronological lines. Among the criteria oriented at improving aesthetics and legibility of a representation of this type, a small number of line crossings is the hardest to achieve. We model the crossing minimization in the storyline visualization problem as a multi-layer crossing minimization problem with tree constraints. Our algorithm can compute a layout with the minimum number of crossings of the chronological lines. Computational results demonstrate that it can solve instances with more than 100 interactions and with more than 100 chronological lines to optimality., Comment: Appears in the Proceedings of the 24th International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization (GD 2016)

We study the probability distribution function of the ground-state energies of the disordered one-dimensional Ising spin chain with power-law interactions using a combination of parallel tempering Monte Carlo and branch, cut, and price algorithms. By tuning the exponent of the power-law interactions we are able to scan several universality classes. Our results suggest that mean-field models have a non-Gaussian limiting distribution of the ground-state energies, whereas non-mean-field models have a Gaussian limiting distribution. We compare the results of the disordered one-dimensional Ising chain to results for a disordered two-leg ladder, for which large system sizes can be studied, and find a qualitative agreement between the disordered one-dimensional Ising chain in the short-range universality class and the disordered two-leg ladder. We show that the mean and the standard deviation of the ground-state energy distributions scale with a power of the system size. In the mean-field universality class the skewness does not follow a power-law behavior and converges to a nonzero constant value. The data for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model seem to be acceptably well fitted by a modified Gumbel distribution. Finally, we discuss the distribution of the internal energy of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model at finite temperatures and show that it behaves similar to the ground-state energy of the system if the temperature is smaller than the critical temperature., Comment: 15 pages, 20 figures, 1 table

We study the Ising spin glass on random graphs with fixed connectivity z and with a Gaussian distribution of the couplings, with mean \mu and unit variance. We compute exact ground states by using a sophisticated branch-and-cut method for z=4,6 and system sizes up to N=1280 for different values of \mu. We locate the spin-glass/ferromagnet phase transition at \mu = 0.77 +/- 0.02 (z=4) and \mu = 0.56 +/- 0.02 (z=6). We also compute the energy and magnetization in the Bethe-Peierls approximation with a stochastic method, and estimate the magnitude of replica symmetry breaking corrections. Near the phase transition, we observe a sharp change of the median running time of our implementation of the algorithm, consistent with a change from a polynomial dependence on the system size, deep in the ferromagnetic phase, to slower than polynomial in the spin-glass phase., Comment: 10 pages, RevTex, 10 eps figures. We investigate the nature of the low-energy, large-scale excitations in the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass with Gaussian couplings and free boundary conditions, by studying the response of the ground state to a coupling-dependent perturbation introduced previously. The ground states are determined exactly for system sizes up to 12^3 spins using a branch and cut algorithm. The data are consistent with a picture where the surface of the excitations is not space-filling, such as the droplet or the ``TNT'' picture, with only minimal corrections to scaling. When allowing for very large corrections to scaling, the data are also consistent with a picture with space-filling surfaces, such as replica symmetry breaking. The energy of the excitations scales with their size with a small exponent \theta', which is compatible with zero if we allow moderate corrections to scaling. We compare the results with data for periodic boundary conditions obtained with a genetic algorithm, and discuss the effects of different boundary conditions on corrections to scaling.
