Subterrestrial neutron spectra show weak but consistent anomalies at multiplicities ~100 and above. The origin of the excess events remains ambiguous, but, in principle, it could be a signature of Dark Matter WIMP annihilation-like interaction with a massive Pb target. However, since the results of the available measurements are below the 5-sigma discovery level, and the observed anomalous structures are on a significant muon-induced background, an independent verification at even greater depth is needed. For that purpose, we have launched NEMESIS 1.4 - a new dedicated experiment consisting of a 1134 kg Pb target and 14 He-3 detectors with PE moderators and a fully digital readout. NEMESIS 1.4 has been taking data at the deepest level (1.4 km, 4000 m.w.e.) of the Pyhasalmi mine, Finland, since November 2022. We describe the idea behind the new setup, compare the first results with the previous data and Monte Carlo simulations, and give the outlook for further research. If the existence of the anomalies is unambiguously confirmed and the model interpretation positively verified, this will be the first Indirect Detection of Dark Matter in the laboratory., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, proceedings of the TAUP 2023 conference

5. Information as a consumer protection instrument on the consumer credit market

The aim of the article was to assess the opinions of consumer credit borrowers on the information message provided to them by lenders at the pre-contractual stage. The opinions were presented in the context of the demographic characteristics of the respondents. The research question posed was whether, taking into account demographic characteristics, the assessment of consumer credit borrowers regarding the information message obtained at the pre-contractual stage varied. The research methodology included a questionnaire and Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI). For the information analysis, we employed the following non-parametric tests: the chi-square test of independence, the Mann–Whitney U test and the Kruskal–Wallis H test. No significant differences were observed in all the parameters of the assessment of the information message, which means that the answer to the research question was negative. The findings suggest that even though borrowers may positively assess the compliance with the information obligations by lenders, it does not mean that all credit decisions made were rational and appropriate to their financial situation. Our study focused on the consumer protection and employed non-parametric tests to analyze the consumer credit borrowers’ assessment of the information provided to them by lenders. 6. Influence of Non-Invasive Zirconium Oxide Surface Treatment on Phase Changes

The aim of the research was to find a zirconia treatment method that would reduce or minimize the transformation from the tetragonal phase to the monoclinic phase. Background: Yttria-stabilized zirconia is increasingly chosen for the base of permanent prosthetic restorations. To achieve a good bond between the prosthetic cup and the veneer material, the material must be treated to achieve surface development. This is a mechanical process, during which an unfavorable transformation from the tetragonal into the monoclinic phase takes place, which leads to the weakening of the internal structure of zirconium dioxide, and later damages the prosthetic restoration. Methods: The tested material consisted of cylindrical samples of 3Y-TZP CeramillZi zirconium oxide, which were sintered after cutting out from the block. After sintering, the samples were subjected to the following types of processing: laser structuring, chemical etching and plasma etching. After the surface treatments, the samples were subjected to diffraction tests to determine the phase composition. Next, the wettability was tested to determine the surface free energy. Results: On the basis of the conducted tests, it was noticed that the applied treatments caused a phase transformation from the tetragonal to the monoclinic phase. After the process of chemical etching, the range of the monoclinic phase for the sample was 5%; after plasma etching, it was 8%, and after laser structuring, it was 2%. In addition, post-surface free energy studies have shown that zirconia is wetted better with an apolar than a polar liquid. Conclusions: The obtained results indicate that the transformation was minimized with the treatments we applied; that is why they are called non-invasive methods. According to the literature data, depending on the parameters of the sandblasting process, the percentage of the monoclinic phase in the treated surfaces ranges from 22% to 52%, which confirms the above-mentioned conclusion.

7. The Gender Gap in the Visegrád Group Countries Based on the Luxembourg Income Study

Gender equality is a fundamental human right and one of the core values of the European Union (EU). Great efforts have been made to defend this right and to promote gender equality within the member states and around the world. However, there are still significant differences between men and women, especially in terms of income. The main objective of the paper is to compare income distributions for gender groups across four Central European countries, Poland, Slovakia, Czechia and Hungary, i.e., the members of the Visegrád Group (V4). These countries share similar histories and similar economic development, but there are substantial differences between their approaches to economic reforms, including labour market policy. This, in turn, is reflected in different income distributions and income inequality patterns. There is a debated research issue regarding the methodology of measuring the gender gap – the traditional methods based on comparing means and medians seem unsatisfactory as they do not consider the shape of income distributions. The paper’s novelty lies in the application of the relative distribution concept, which goes beyond the typical focus on average income differences toward a full comparison of the entire distribution of women’s earnings relative to men’s. In the paper, we implement a parametric approach for estimating the relative distribution, which allows us to compare and visualise the “gap” between the gender groups at each distribution quantile. The basis for the calculations was the microdata from the Luxembourg Income Study (LIS). The statistical methods applied in the study were appropriate to describe the gender gap over the entire income range. The results of the empirical analysis helped to reveal similarities and substantial differences between the countries.

8. Isolation and Characterization of Novel Cellulose Micro/Nanofibers from Lygeum spartum Through a Chemo-Mechanical Process

Recent studies have focused on the development of bio-based products from sustainable resources using green extraction approaches, especially nanocellulose, an emerging nanoparticle with impressive properties and multiple applications. Despite the various sources of cellulose nanofibers, the search for alternative resources that replace wood, such as Lygeum spartum, a fast-growing Mediterranean plant, is crucial. It has not been previously investigated as a potential source of nanocellulose. This study investigates the extraction of novel cellulose micro/nanofibers from Lygeum spartum using a two-step method, including both alkali and mechanical treatment as post-treatment with ultrasound, as well as homogenization using water and dilute alkali solution as a solvent. To determine the structural properties of CNFs, a series of characterization techniques was applied. A significant correlation was observed between the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results. The FTIR results revealed the elimination of amorphous regions and an increase in the energy of the H-bonding modes, while the XRD results showed that the crystal structure of micro/nanofibers was preserved during the process. In addition, they indicated an increase in the crystallinity index obtained with both methods (deconvolution and Segal). Thermal analysis based on thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) confirmed improvement in the thermal properties of the isolated micro/nanofibers. The temperatures of maximum degradation were 335 °C and 347 °C. Morphological analysis using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) showed the formation of fibers along the axis, with rough and porous surfaces. The findings indicate the potential of Lygeum spartum as a source for producing high-quality micro/nanofibers. A future direction of study is to use the cellulose micro/nanofibers as additives in recycled paper and to evaluate the mechanical properties of the paper sheets, as well as investigate their use in smart paper.

The literature analysis did not indicate any studies on fluorination tests of carbon nanocomposite coatings doped with transition metals in a form of nanocrystalline metal carbide in amorphous carbon matrix (nc-MeC/a-C). As a model coating to investigate the effect of fluorination in a tetrafluoromethane (CF4) atmosphere, a nanocomposite carbon coating doped with chromium-forming nanocrystals of chromium carbides in a-C matrix (nc-CrC/a-C) produced by magnetron sputtering from graphite targets and using a Pulse-DC type medium frequency power supply was chosen. After the deposition of the gradient chromium carbonitride (CrCN) adhesive sublayer, the fluorination of the main coating was conducted in a reactive mode in an (Ar + CF4) atmosphere at various CF4 content. It was observed that the presence of CF4 in the atmosphere resulted in a reduced amount of chromium carbides formed in favor of chromium fluorides. Thus far, this is an observation that seems unnoticed by the carbon coatings researchers. Fluorine was assumed to bond much more readily to carbon than to chromium, due to the stability of tetrafluoromethane (CF4). The opposite seems to be true. The mechanical properties (nano-hardness and Young’s modulus) and tribological properties in the ‘pin-on-disc’ friction pair are presented, along with the analysis of bonds occurring between chromium, carbon, and fluorine by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Despite significant advancements in the field of oncology, cancers still pose one of the greatest challenges of modern healthcare. Given the cytoskeleton’s pivotal role in regulating mechanisms critical to cancer development, further studies of the cytoskeletal elements could yield new practical applications. Septins represent a group of relatively well-conserved GTP-binding proteins that constitute the fourth component of the cytoskeleton. Septin 9 (SEPT9) has been linked to a diverse spectrum of malignancies and appears to be the most notable septin member in that category. SEPT9 constitutes a biomarker of colorectal cancer (CRC) and has been positively correlated with a high clinical stage in breast cancer, cervical cancer, and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. SEPT9_i1 represents the most extensively studied isoform of SEPT9, which substantially contributes to carcinogenesis, metastasis, and treatment resistance. Nevertheless, the mechanistic basis of SEPT9_i1 oncogenicity remains to be fully elucidated. In this review, we highlight SEPT9’s and SEPT9_i1’s structures and interactions with Hypoxia Inducible Factor α (HIF-1 α) and C-Jun N-Terminal Kinase (JNK), as well as discuss SEPT9_i1’s contribution to aneuploidy, cell invasiveness, and taxane resistance—key phenomena in the progression of malignancies. Finally, we emphasize forchlorfenuron and other septin inhibitors as potential chemotherapeutics and migrastatics.

Exportin 1 (XPO1) is a crucial molecule of nucleocytoplasmic transport. Among others, it exports molecules important for oncogenesis from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. The expression of XPO1 is increased in numerous malignancies, which contributes to the abnormal localization of tumor suppressor proteins in the cytoplasm and subsequent cell cycle dysregulation. Selective inhibitors of nuclear export (SINEs) are novel anticancer agents that target XPO1, arrest tumor suppressor proteins in the nucleus, and induce apoptosis in cancer cells. Selinexor, a first-in-class SINE, has already been approved for the treatment of relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma and relapsed/refractory diffuse large B cell lymphoma not otherwise specified. It has also been proven effective in relapsed/refractory and previously untreated acute myeloid leukemia patients. In addition, numerous studies have yielded promising results in other malignancies of the hematopoietic system and solid tumors. However, future clinical use of selinexor and other SINEs may be hampered by their significant toxicity.

Chitin, a ubiquitous biopolymer, holds paramount scientific and economic significance. Historically, it has been primarily isolated from marine crustaceans. However, the surge in demand for chitin and the burgeoning interest in biopolymers have necessitated the exploration of alternative sources. Among these methods, the mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mori) has emerged as a particularly intriguing prospect. To isolate chitin from Bombyx mori, a chemical extraction methodology was employed. This process involved a series of meticulously orchestrated steps, including Folch extraction, demineralization, deproteinization, and decolorization. The resultant chitin was subjected to comprehensive analysis utilizing techniques such as attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). The obtained results allow us to conclude that the Bombyx mori represents an attractive alternative source of α-chitin.

Sustainable development is the subject of many economic analyses, but so far no attempt has been made to identify the main mechanism of interdependence between sustainable energy development and sustainable economic development in the second decade of the 21st century. The particular role of energy in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is due to the fact that the production, supply and use of energy underpin economic growth. The article fills this research gap and spawns both a better understanding of the essence of sustainable development as well as practical conclusions. The aim is to assess sustainable energy development and sustainable economic development in EU member states and to determine the correlation between the two in the EU. Substantive and formal methods were used to select diagnostic variables, including: the parametric method, the standardized sums method, and correlation analysis. The analysis period covers the years 2014–2021. The conducted research demonstrated a significant variation in the level of sustainable energy development and sustainable economic development among EU countries.

The aim of this study was to obtain a series of activated carbon samples by the chemical activation of low-rank coal. The precursor was impregnated with a NaOH solution. Activated carbons were characterized by determining their textural parameters and content of surface oxygen functional groups and by using an elemental analysis. The carbons were tested as potential adsorbents for the removal of liquid pollutants represented by rhodamine B. The effectiveness of rhodamine B removal from water solutions depended on the initial concentration of the dye, the mass of rhodamine B, and the pH and temperature of the reaction. The isotherm examination followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of the rhodamine B was 119 mg/g. The kinetic investigation favored the pseudo-second-order model, indicating a chemisorption mechanism. The thermodynamic assessment indicated spontaneous and endothermic adsorption, with decreased randomness at the solid–liquid interface. The experiment revealed that a 0.1 M HCl solution was the most effective regenerative agent.

Sustainable development counteracts climate change and strives for a good quality of life. It is a development based on economic, social and environmental goals which should be evaluated. Environmental taxes have to ensure enterprises’ development follows sustainability principles. The basis of environmental taxes is a physical unit of harmful substance emissions with a proven negative impact on the environment. The article’s main objective is to assess the impact of environmental taxes (Envtax) on the sustainable development of the transportation and storage enterprises (Susd) (NACE Rev. 2: H) from 2008 to 2018. We created integrated indicators of sustainable development and its components, single-equation and multi-equation models (the OLS estimation) and Model Autoregressive Moving Average with eXogenous (ARMAX) to verify the research hypothesis. The research results indicate that energy (Entax t), transport (Trtax) and pollution taxes (Poltax) from current and previous period significantly affect the development of transportation and storage enterprises within sustainability principles (economic: Ed, social: Sd, and environmental: Envd). There is a strong variation in the strength and direction of the impact of environmental taxes on the development of the transportation and storage enterprises following sustainability principles in Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, and Slovenia from 2008 to 2018. The results indicate that taxes are not effectively used and that implementing reforms in the European Union in this area is the right direction.

17. The Shortest Confidence Interval for the Ratio of Quantiles of the Dagum Distribution

J\k{e}drzejczak et al. (2018) constructed a confidence interval for a ratio of quantiles coming from the Dagum distribution, which is frequently applied as a theoretical model in numerous income distribution analyses. The proposed interval is symmetric with respect to the ratio of sample quantiles, which result may be unsatisfactory in many practical applications. The search for a confidence interval with a smaller length led to the derivation of the shortest interval with the ends being asymmetric relative to the ratio of sample quantiles. In the paper, the existence of the shortest confidence interval is shown and the method of obtaining such an interval is presented. The results of the calculation show a reduction in the length of the confidence intervals by several percent in relation to the symmetric confidence interval.

In the paper, we construct a confidence interval for such measures under the Dagum distribution which has been widely assumed as a~model for income distributions in empirical analyses Its properties are investigated on the basis of computer simulations. The constructed confidence interval is applied to the analysis of inequality income in Poland in 2015.

20. The Influence of TiO2–Lignin Hybrid Fillers in Low-Density Polyethylene Composites on Photocatalytic Performance and UV-Barrier Properties

The main objective of this study was to discover new packaging materials that could integrate one of the most expected properties, such as UV protection, with a self-cleaning ability defined as photocatalytic performance. Accordingly, new hybrid additives were used to transform LDPE films into materials with complex performance properties. In this study, titanium dioxide–lignin (TL) hybrid systems with a weight ratio of inorganic to organic precursors of 5-1, 1-1, and 1-5 were prepared using a mechanical method. The obtained materials and pristine components were characterized using measurement techniques and research methods, such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal stability analysis (TGA/DTG), measurement of the electrokinetic potential as a function of pH, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and particle size distribution measurement. It was found that hydrogen bonds were formed between the organic and inorganic components, based on which the obtained systems were classified as class I hybrid materials. In the next step, inorganic–organic hybrid systems and pristine components were used as fillers for a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) composite, 5 and 10% by weight, in order to determine their impact on parameters such as tensile elongation at break. Polymer composites containing titanium dioxide in their matrix were then subjected to a test of photocatalytic properties, based on which it was found that all materials with TiO2 in their structure exhibit photocatalytic properties, whereby the best results were obtained for samples containing the TiO2–lignin hybrid system (1-1). The mechanical tests showed that the thin sheet films had a strong anisotropy due to chill-roll extrusion, ranging from 1.98 to 3.32. UV–Vis spectroscopy revealed four times higher light absorption for composites in which lignin was present than for pure LDPE, in the 250–450 nm range. On the other hand, the temperature at 5% and 30% weight loss revealed by TGA testing increased the highest performance for LDPE/TiO2 materials (by 20.4 °C and 8.7 °C, respectively).

In this work, Ti-incorporated carbon coatings were used as substrates for modification with one- and two-component self-assembled monolayers of organosilane compounds using a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamp. This enabled the selective functionalization of surfaces with micrometric dimensions. The topography of the modified surfaces was defined using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The effectiveness of the modification was confirmed by measurements of the water contact angle and surface free energy using the Oss and Good method. Using a T-23 microtribometer with counterparts in the shape of balls that were made of steel, silicon nitride (Si3N4), and zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), the tribological properties of the obtained coatings were tested. These investigations showed that modification by using a PDMS stamp makes it possible to produce two-component ultrathin silane layers on Ti-containing carbon substrates. Two-component organosilane layers had higher hydrophobicity, a lower friction coefficient, and a smaller width of wear tracks than the one-component analogs. It was also found that the work of adhesion of the created surfaces had a significant influence on the value of the friction coefficient and the percentage value of the growth inhibition of bacteria.

Atherosclerosis affects human health in many ways, leading to disability or premature death due to ischemic heart disease, stroke, or limb ischemia. Poststenotic blood flow disruption may also play an essential role in artery wall impairment linked with hemolysis related to shear stress. The maximum shear stress in the atherosclerotic plaque area is the main parameter determining hemolysis risk. In our work, a 3D internal carotid artery model was built from CT scans performed on patients qualified for percutaneous angioplasty due to its symptomatic stenosis. The obtained stenosis geometries were used to conduct a series of computer simulations to identify critical parameters corresponding to the increase in shear stress in the arteries. Stenosis shape parameters responsible for the increase in shear stress were determined. The effect of changes in the carotid artery size, length, and degree of narrowing on the change in maximum shear stress was demonstrated. Then, a correlation for the quick initial diagnosis of atherosclerotic stenoses regarding the risk of hemolysis was developed. The developed relationship for rapid hemolysis risk assessment uses information from typical non-invasive tests for treated patients. Practical guidelines have been developed regarding which stenosis shape parameters pose a risk of hemolysis, which may be adapted in medical practice.

Abstract In the last decades, biological invasions become the main driver of biodiversity loss. The changes can be noticed not only in the above-ground diversity but also in the underground, including seed banks of native vegetation. In this study, we focus on Rudbeckia laciniata, a species introduced to many European and Asian countries, to characterize its soil seed bank as well as to answer the question, how the species influenced soil seed banks of meadow plant communities in two types of habitats (fresh and wet), where traditional mowing was abandoned. Within the habitats, we conducted our study on a three-step scale of invasion, from full invasion, through the transition zone to the control zone, where no invasion of the species has been observed so far. The majority of the R. laciniata seeds were located in the surface layer of soil. We detected, that 47% (in fresh meadow) and 56% (wet meadow) of recorded species occurred only in a soil seed bank, and were absent in aboveground vegetation. Emergence of native plants from the soil seed bank is low due to rapid shading of the soil surface by R. laciniata seedlings. However, a short-term seed bank of the species gives hope that returning to regular mowing brings the desired results in its the elimination from vegetation, in a fairly short time.

In this research, we aimed to design an eco-efficient composite based on alkali-activated materials (AAMs) with self-cleaning properties for sustainable construction. Significant emphasis was placed on determining the role of the type of precursor, the amount of sodium silicate, and the addition of titanium dioxide on the rheological and mechanical properties of AAMs. An important aspect of the research was the modification of AAM with titanium dioxide to obtain the self-cleaning properties. Titanium dioxide, thanks to its photocatalytic properties, enables the reduction of organic pollutants and nitrogen oxides in the urban atmosphere and promotes the cleaning of material surfaces. Blast furnace slag (BFS) was used as the source material, which was then substituted in subsequent formulations with metakaolinite at 50% and fly ash and zeolite at 30%. The best-activated AAMs, in which blast furnace slag and its mixture with metakaolinite were used as precursors, achieved compressive strengths of 50 MPa. BFS mixtures with pozzolans were more difficult to polymerize, although their final strengths were still relatively high, in the range of 33–37 MPa. Adding titanium dioxide (T) improved the final strengths and slightly lowered the heat of hydration and spreading of the AAM mortars. The best self-cleaning properties were achieved with composites that comprised a mixture of blast furnace slag, fly ash, and 2% titanium dioxide.

We present the case of a 27-year-old motorcyclist after a multi-organ trauma. He suffered a rupture of the aortic arch located in zone 2 and was disqualified from surgical replacement of the aortic arch due to active bleeding from parenchymal organs. Instead, he was provided with a physician-modified endograft (PMEG) to complete fenestrated thoracic endovascular aortic repair as a damage control procedure. No reports in the world literature are found regarding the use of PMEG technology in truly ruptured post-traumatic pseudo-aneurysm on the border of zone 1 and 2 of the aortic arch in emergency settings. The surgery provided temporary supply of the aorta and allowed all of the other surgical and orthopedic procedures to be completed. Endovascular treatment of aortic arch damage with PMEG is possible and can be effectively used for urgent indications when an open operation is not possible.

Sustainable development has been the focus of many analyses in economics. This article fills this research gap and enables a better understanding of the essence of sustainable development to help draw applicable conclusions. The aim is to assess sustainable energy and social development in EU countries and to examine their shared relationship in this area. To this end, this study uses a taxonomic method and correlation analysis. The analysis period covers the years 2014–2020. The research builds directly on the assumptions of the concept of sustainable development, with particular emphasis on energy and social aspects. The article is composed of two parts. The first, based on a literature review, discusses the essence of sustainable energy development and social sustainability. The second outlines the research methodology, including the underpinnings of synthetic measures and the results of the conducted empirical research.

Abstract Oral mucositis (OM) is one of the most frequent adverse events of high-dose conditioning chemotherapy with melphalan prior to autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT). It significantly reduces the patients’ quality of life. One of the preventive strategies for OM is cryotherapy. We retrospectively analyzed whether commercially available ice-cream could prevent OM during the melphalan infusion. We retrospectively analyzed 74 patients after AHSCT to see whether there is any correlation between OM and cryotherapy (ice-cream), melphalan dose (140 mg/m2 or 200 mg/m2). The incidence of OM in our study inversely correlated with cryotherapy in the form of ice-cream. Out of 74 patients receiving conditioning chemotherapy with high-dose melphalan, 52 received cryotherapy. Fifteen patients in the cryotherapy group (28.84%) developed OM, whereas 13 patients (59.09%) developed it in the group without cryotherapy. A search for neutrino and antineutrino events correlated with 2,350 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is performed with Borexino data collected between December 2007 and November 2015. No statistically significant excess over background is observed. We look for electron antineutrinos ($\bar{\nu}_e$) that inverse beta decay on protons with energies from 1.8\,MeV to 15\,MeV and set the best limit on the neutrino fluence from GRBs below 8\,MeV. The signals from neutrinos and antineutrinos from GRBs that scatter on electrons are also searched for, a detection channel made possible by the particularly radio-pure scintillator of Borexino. We obtain currently the best limits on the neutrino fluence of all flavors and species below 7\,MeV. Finally, time correlations between GRBs and bursts of events are investigated. Our analysis combines two semi-independent data acquisition systems for the first time: the primary Borexino readout optimized for solar neutrino physics up to a few MeV, and a fast waveform digitizer system tuned for events above 1\,MeV., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Immunization against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has significantly limited the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and reduced the associated complications, especially mortality. To prolong immunity, an immune booster was implemented. We evaluated the role of SARS-CoV-2 infection history in the vaccination schedules of kidney and liver transplant recipients and patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). To this end, we retrospectively analyzed the data of 78 solid organ transplantation (SOT) recipients and 40 patients with immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy as representatives of the CKD group. Patients received two or three doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine. At the follow-up, antibody (Ab) titer, graft function, COVID-19 history, and patients’ clinical condition were assessed. Ab level was higher after two doses in patients with a COVID-19 history over three doses in patients with no COVID-19 history. Compared to three doses, subjects who were administered two doses had a longer median time to infection. Positive antibodies, in response to the third dose, were not observed in up to 8.4% of SOT patients. The results show that the vaccination schedule should take into account the vaccine response rate and COVID-19 history. So-called hybrid immunity appears to be most efficient at providing humoral responses against SARS-CoV-2 infection in immunocompromised patients.

Nanoparticles are extremely promising components that are used in diagnostics and medical therapies. Among them, silica nanoparticles are ultrafine materials that, due to their unique physicochemical properties, have already been used in biomedicine, for instance, in cancer therapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the cytotoxicity of three types of nanoparticles (SiO2, SiO2-SH, and SiO2-COOH) in relation to red blood cells, as well as the impact of silicon dioxide nanoparticles on biological membranes and liposome models of membranes. The results obtained prove that hemolytic toxicity depends on the concentration of nanoparticles and the incubation period. Silica nanoparticles have a marginal impact on the changes in the osmotic resistance of erythrocytes, except for SiO2-COOH, which, similarly to SiO2 and SiO2-SH, changes the shape of erythrocytes from discocytes mainly towards echinocytes. What is more, nanosilica has an impact on the change in fluidity of biological and model membranes. The research gives a new view of the practical possibilities for the use of large-grain nanoparticles in biomedicine.

Bacterial cellulose is a unique biopolymer that has found numerous biomedical applications, such as being an excellent wound-dressing material or a carrier for delivering active compounds. The purpose of this study was to analyze the ability of modified bacterial cellulose (BC) using low-pressure Ar plasma to control the release of glycoside hydrolases with antibiofilm activity, namely PelAh and PslGh, from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The chemical composition and morphology of the BC surfaces were characterized using photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The analyses revealed significant changes in the chemical composition of the BC surface due to the introduction of charged functional groups and the conversion of its well-ordered structure into a more amorphous form. The release profiles of enzymes from both forms of the carrier were different and depended on their structural properties. However, a significant impact of BC modification on protein release behavior from the carrier was observed only for PslGh. Both enzymes, when immobilized on pristine and argon plasma-modified BC, retained their ability to effectively reduce biofilm levels, similarly to their soluble form. Ar plasma-modified BC with immobilized specific hydrolases can be used as an effective tool for inhibiting P. aeruginosa biofilm development.

Borexino is a liquid scintillation detector located deep underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS, Italy). Thanks to the unmatched radio-purity of the scintillator, and to the well understood detector response at low energy, a new limit on the stability of the electron for decay into a neutrino and a single mono-energetic photon was obtained. Neutrino produced in a chain of nuclear reactions in the Sun starting from the fusion of two protons, for the first time has been detected in a real-time detector in spectrometric mode. The unique properties of the Borexino detector provided an oppurtunity to disentangle pp-neutrino spectrum from the background components. A comparison of the total neutrino flux from the Sun with Solar luminosity in photons provides a test of the stability of the Sun on the 10$^{5}$ years time scale, and sets a strong limit on the power production in the unknown energy sources in the Sun of no more than 4\% of the total energy production at 90\% C.L., Comment: 15 pages, 2 tables, 3 figures

We report an improved geo-neutrino measurement with Borexino from 2056 days of data taking. The present exposure is $(5.5\pm0.3)\times10^{31}$ proton$\times$yr. Assuming a chondritic Th/U mass ratio of 3.9, we obtain $23.7 ^{+6.5}_{-5.7} (stat) ^{+0.9}_{-0.6} (sys)$ geo-neutrino events. The null observation of geo-neutrinos with Borexino alone has a probability of $3.6 \times 10^{-9}$ (5.9$\sigma$). A geo-neutrino signal from the mantle is obtained at 98\% C.L. The radiogenic heat production for U and Th from the present best-fit result is restricted to the range 23-36 TW, taking into account the uncertainty on the distribution of heat producing elements inside the Earth., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Introduction and objective With the development of tech-nology, the number of users of various mobile applications is growing, including those related to health. They are used by people with multiple health problems, including patients with tinnitus. Currently, there are several hundred tools available on the mobile application market for this group of patients, but most are in English. This review aims to identify mobile appli-cations in Polish that can be useful in tinnitus sound therapy. Brief description of the state of knowledge Based on a re-view of mobile apps available in the Google Play Store and after applying exclusion criteria, 16 apps were chosen. These were tools that may be useful in tinnitus sound therapy. These applications have the ability to generate different acoustic signals, are free of charge and are in the Polish language. Most of them are apps for relaxation, meditation, sleep, and only one (ReSound Tinnitus Relief) has been developed specifically for people suffering from tinnitus. Summary Despite the large number of apps that may be useful in tinnitus sound therapy, only a few have Polish menus. Besides, only one Polish language application was identified that has been specifically designed for people with tinnitus. As patients use various solutions, it is crucial to educate them about the apps’ functionality and validate them to make infor-med decisions about the tools they choose. The information obtained from the patient during the interview, combined with the data in this review, can help choose an app that meets the patient’s needs.

The gut epithelium is a habitat of a variety of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses and Archaea. With the advent of sophisticated molecular techniques and bioinformatics tools, more information on the composition and thus function of gut microbiota was revealed. The gut microbiota as an integral part of the intestinal barrier has been shown to be involved in shaping the mucosal innate and adaptive immune response and to provide protection against pathogens. Consequently, a set of biochemical signals exchanged within microbes and communication between the microbiota and the host have opened a new way of thinking about cancer biology. Probiotics are living organisms which administered in adequate amounts may bring health benefits and have the potential to be an integral part of the prevention/treatment strategies in clinical approaches. Here we provide a comprehensive review of data linking gut microbiota to cancer pathogenesis and its clinical course. We focus on gastrointestinal cancers, such as gastric, colorectal, pancreatic and liver cancer.

Abstract Clinical diagnosis of epilepsy depends heavily on the detection of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) from scalp electroencephalographic (EEG) signals, which by purely visual means is far from straightforward. Here, we introduce a simple signal analysis procedure based on scalp EEG zero-crossing patterns which can extract the spatiotemporal structure of scalp voltage fluctuations. We analyzed simultaneous scalp and intracranial EEG recordings from patients with pharmacoresistant temporal lobe epilepsy. Our data show that a large proportion of intracranial IEDs manifest only as subtle, low-amplitude waveforms below scalp EEG background and could, therefore, not be detected visually. We found that scalp zero-crossing patterns allow detection of these intracranial IEDs on a single-trial level with millisecond temporal precision and including some mesial temporal discharges that do not propagate to the neocortex. Applied to an independent dataset, our method discriminated accurately between patients with epilepsy and normal subjects, confirming its practical applicability.

Cohen syndrome (Q87.8;ORPHA:193; OMIM#216550) is an autosomal recessive inherited genetic disorder caused by mutation in the VPS13B/COH1 gene. It is characterized by variable clinical symptoms such as deformity of the head, face, hands and feet, eye abnormalities, abdominal obesity, neutropenia and nonprogressive intellectual disability. The typical lesions in the eyeball in Cohen syndrome include high myopia, retinal dystrophy, strabismus, maculopathy and lens subluxation. The present study describes the coexistence of bilateral macular edema with pale optic disc in a patient with a homozygous deletion in the VPS13B/COH1 gene.

BackgroundTinnitus is a phantom auditory sensation in the absence of an external stimulus. It is accompanied by a broad range of negative emotional symptoms and a significantly lower quality of life. So far, there is no cure for tinnitus, although various treatment options have been tried. One of them is mobile technology employing dedicated apps based on sound therapy. The apps can be managed by the patient and tailored according to their needs. ObjectiveThe study aims to assess the effect of a mobile app that generates background sounds on the severity of tinnitus. MethodsThe study involved 68 adults who had chronic tinnitus. Participants were divided into a study group (44 patients) and a control group (24 patients). For 6 months those in the study group used a free mobile app that enriched the sound environment with a background sound. Participants were instructed to use the app for at least 30 minutes a day using their preferred sound. The participants in the control group did not use the app. Subjective changes in the day-to-day functioning of both groups were evaluated using the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) questionnaire, a visual analog scale, and a user survey. Podstawowym zagadnieniem badawczym było ustalenie możliwości wydania decyzji o warunkach zabudowy dla inwestycji mieszkaniowej w sytuacji, gdy planowana inwestycja hipotetycznie mogłaby się znaleźć w strefie oddziaływania elektrowni wiatrowej, której budowę przewiduje miejscowy plan zagospodarowania przestrzennego. An externalized transapical guidewire (ETAG) technique has been used for safe delivery of high-profile devices through a tortuous aorta to zone 0, which is currently precluded after mechanical artificial aortic valve replacement (AVR). The aim of the study was to report one center’s experience (based on 3 cases) of a unique modification to the ETAG technique used for the first time during total endovascular aortic arch repair after AVR. This report contains technical notes regarding a new method of steering the guidewire from the apex inside the artificial aortic valve during total endovascular aortic arch repair after AVR and the details crucial in preparation for this mini-invasive procedure. As a conclusion, the ETAG technique could be performed after mechanical AVR with active positioning of the guidewire carried out under the control of transesophageal echocardiography.
