1. Fatherhood experiences: A qualitative approach of cisgender and transgender fathers in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) situation with sperm donation

Abstract

Assisted reproductive technologies have offered new ways and pathways to conceive a child. However, very few is known about insights into the complexities and challenges faced by trans fathers in contemporary parenthood journeys. This qualitative study explores the experiences of transgender and cisgender fathers who conceived children through donor sperm insemination (DSI) and natural conception (NC). The study will examine the recognition and challenges associated with paternal experiences. Seventy-nine interviews (one per child) were conducted with 16 transgender fathers who conceived trough DSI, 15 infertile cisgender fathers who conceived trough DSI, and 17 cisgender fathers who conceived through NC. The study employed thematic analysis and the Five-Minute Speech Sample to assess family dynamics. Results indicate that in the Trans-DSI group, fatherhood was often defined within the social role of masculinity, with some expressing ‘intranquility’ (i.e., feelings of unease or insecurity). The Cis-DSI group showed more tranquility but faced challenges regarding biological filiation. The NC group exhibited diverse experiences. Findings suggest that fathers' self-confidence, especially for transgender and non-biologically related fathers, can be challenged. Recognizing these challenges can guide better support for families navigating diverse parenthood journeys.

Abstract

The stem cell niche plays a crucial role in the decision to either self-renew or differentiate. Recent observations lead to the hypothesis that O2 supply by blood and local O2 tension could be key components of the testicular niche of spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). In this study, we investigated the impact of different hypoxic conditions (3.5%, 1%, and 0.1% O2 tension) on murine and human SSCs in culture. We observed a deleterious effect of severe hypoxia (1% O2 and 0.1% O2) on the capacity of murine SSCs to form germ cell clusters when plated at low density. Severe effects on SSCs proliferation occur at an O2 tension ≤1% and hypoxia was shown to induce a slight differentiation bias under 1% and 0.1% O2 conditions. Exposure to hypoxia did not appear to change the mitochondrial mass and the potential of membrane of mitochondria in SSCs, but induced the generation of mitochondrial ROS at 3.5% and 1% O2. In 3.5% O2 conditions, the capacity of SSCs to form colonies was maintained at the level of 21% O2 at low cell density, but it was impossible to amplify and maintain stem cell number in high cell density culture. In addition, we observed that 3.5% hypoxia did not improve the maintenance and propagation of human SSCs. Finally, our data tend to show that the transcription factors HIF-1α and HIF-2α are not involved in the SSCs cell autonomous response to hypoxia.

3. Opto-mechanical expulsion of individual micro-particles by laser-induced shockwave in air

Abstract

It was recently demonstrated that laser filamentation was able to generate an optically transparent channel through clouds and fog for free-space optical communications applications. However, no quantitative measurement of the interaction between the laser-induced shockwave and the aerosol particles has been carried out so far, leaving the precise nature of the clearing mechanism up for discussion. A critical question was the maximum distance at which the filament could still act on the aerosol particle. Distances widely exceeding the filament diameter and its energy reservoir exclude other potential clearing effects like shattering or explosion by direct exposure to the laser. Here, we quantify the force exerted by the shockwave on a single aerosol microparticle. The force is measured by observing the ejection and displacement of the particle when trapped in an optical tweezer. We demonstrate that even for distances ranging from 1.5 to 5.5 mm away from the filament, thus widely exceeding the filamentary region, an acoustic force of 500 pN to 8 nN (depending on the initial laser power) acts on the aerosol particle and expels it away from the optical trap.

9. Live cells assessment of opto-poration by a single femtosecond temporal Airy laser pulse

Abstract

We report on the first study of live cell opto-poration by single temporally shaped femtosecond laser pulses. Based on an ad hoc developed cell staining protocol, we demonstrate the influence of the pulse temporal profile on the efficiency of poration and on cell viability at four hours comparing the results obtained for four different temporal pulse shapes: positive and negative temporal Airy, positively chirped, and 30 fs bandwidth limited pulses. Each pulse has been tested on a thousand cells. The most suitable pulses for opto-poration are the positive Temporal Airy Pulses (TAP+), likely because they enhance avalanche ionization compared to bandwidth-limited shorter pulses. We discuss the results in the context of previous studies, highlighting the differences between single and multi-pulse opto-poration strategies.

Abstract

We experimentally study entangled two-photon absorption in Rhodamine 6G as a function of the spatial properties of a high flux of broadband entangled photon pairs. We first demonstrate a key signature dependence of the entangled two-photon absorption rate on the type of entangled pair flux attenuation: linear, when the laser pump power is attenuated, and quadratic, when the pair flux itself experiences linear loss. We then perform a fluorescence-based Z-scan measurement to study the influence of beam waist size on the entangled two-photon absorption process and compare this to classical single- and two-photon absorption processes. We demonstrate that the entangled two-photon absorption shares a beam waist dependence similar to that of classical two-photon absorption. This result presents an additional argument for the wide range of contrasting values of quoted entangled two-photon absorption cross-sections of dyes in literature.

Abstract

Using the aerosol and cloud simulation chamber AIDA, we investigated the laser filament induced particle formation in ambient air, humid synthetic air, humid nitrogen, argon–oxygen mixture, and pure argon in order to simulate the particle formation under realistic atmospheric conditions as well as to investigate the influence of typical gas-phase atmospheric constituents on the particle formation. Terawatt laser plasma filaments generated new particles in the size range 3 to 130 nm with particle production rates ranging from 1 × 107 to 5 × 109 cm−3 plasma s−1 for the given experimental conditions. In all cases the particle formation rates increased exponentially with the water content of the gas mixture. Furthermore, the presence of a few ppb of trace gases like SO2 and α-pinene clearly enhanced the particle yield by number, the latter also by mass. Our findings suggest that new particle formation is efficiently supported by oxidized species like acids generated by the photoionization of both major and minor components of the air, including N2, NH3, SO2 and organics.

Abstract

We show that spectral phase shaping of fs-laser pulses can be used to optimize laser-cell membrane interactions in water environment. The energy and peak intensity thresholds required for cell poration with single pulse in the nJ range can be significantly reduced (25% reduction in energy and 88% reduction in peak intensity) by using temporal Airy pulses, controlled by positive third order dispersion, as compared to bandwidth limited pulses. Temporal Airy pulses are also effective to control the morphology of the induced pores, with prospective applications from cellular to tissue opto-surgery and transfection.

Resume Le nombre d’enfants nes par don de gametes croit par les conceptions realisees a l’etranger. Les couples s’engageant dans un don de gametes ne beneficient pas tous du meme accompagnement autour des questions soulevees par l’information a l’enfant. A travers une revue de la litterature, les auteurs explorent les donnees concernant les intentions d’information des parents a l’enfant et a l’entourage, l’influence de la question de l’anonymat, le taux effectif d’information, l’influence de l’âge de l’enfant, les modalites d’informations et les liens eventuels avec la dynamique familiale. Les resultats quantitatifs soulignent la complexite de cette tâche, puisque 10 a 90 % des couples declarent une intention d’informer leur enfant de sa conception par don, alors que 5 a 30 % le font effectivement apres la naissance tandis que 59 a 93 % des proches sont neanmoins informes. Les auteurs degageront les pistes psychopathologiques qui soutiennent cette possibilite de narration pour les parents : l’elaboration de leur infertilite, la representation du don, l’elaboration de la rivalite avec les donneurs, la notion de secret et d’intimite. L’objectif de cet article est de permettre aux soignants d’accompagner cette reflexion des futurs parents grâce a une meilleure comprehension des enjeux mobilises par cette question de l’information.

Abstract

As the premiere imaging device of the 20th century, the cathode-ray tube (CRT) was used in both raster and vector monitors for radar, oscilloscopes, television, computer graphics displays, video games, home computers, surveillance monitors, medical imaging, and more. The technology involved in the CRT has come to define mediated imagery, and how we perceive it, becoming a part of the cultures it conveys. Today, as flat-screen technologies have so quickly begun to replace bulkier CRTs, the cathode-ray tube’s long-held role as the dominant moving image display has come to an end. To the general public, the CRT was a technology that was used passively as the receiver of television broadcasts; its interactive uses, present since the first oscilloscopes, took longer to gain public notice. Early arcade games used monochrome raster CRTs, although some vector-based games were produced from 1977 to 1985, and after 1980 virtually all games used color monitors.

Unlike many children's television shows, Mister Rogers'Neighborhood did more than simply entertain or occupy children's attention. The show educated them in the affective domain, encouraging such things as appreciation for difference, collaboration, self-expression, and self-worth. It also introduced them to the areas of culture, art, and music through guests, trips, art objects and processes, and demonstrations, making it accessible and meaningful in a way that a child could understand. Resume Cette recherche s’interesse aux impacts eventuels du don d’ovocytes sur la construction de la parentalite et la dynamique familiale. Objectifs Les objectifs etaient d’evaluer la nature et le destin des problematiques psychiques mobilisees par l’experience de l’infertilite et du don d’ovocytes, et d’observer dans quelle mesure la grossesse et le temps du post-partum pouvaient constituer un temps d’elaboration de cette experience. Il s’agissait egalement d’observer la nature de l’alliance familiale au sein de ces familles et de determiner si l’experience d’infertilite et de don de gametes peut infiltrer la relation triadique pere-mere-bebe. Methode Nous avons mene une recherche longitudinale au sein de laquelle huit couples ont ete rencontres a 7–8 mois de grossesse et aux 3 mois de l’enfant. Des entretiens semi-directifs s’inspirant de l’interview pour les representations maternelles pendant la grossesse (IRMAG) et de l’entretien « R » de Stern ont ete realises. L’alliance familiale a ete evaluee grâce au jeu triadique de Lausanne. Resultats La grossesse et le temps du post-partum soutiennent de facon variable un processus d’elaboration de l’experience de l’infertilite et du don d’ovocytes. Pour certaines familles, cette experience peut infiltrer les relations triadiques et conduire a une alliance familiale dite « non fonctionnelle ».

Abstract

Summary Aim To assess the effects of water immersion on cardiovascular requirements, 30 min immersed versus air steady exercises at neutral temperature were compared in two settings:similar energy expenditure (60% maximal oxygen consumption; series 1) and similar ergometric workload (120 W; series 2). For 15 healthy male subjects, the arterial blood pressure, heart rate, thoracic fluid conductivity (TFC), cardiac index (CI) and stroke index (SI) were monitored at rest, during the exercise period and during 30 min of post-exercise recovery in two conditions. Plasma atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) was also measured. Results Resting water immersion increased TFC, CI, SI, and systolic arterial pressure (SAP). During exercise the average CI, SI and SAP were not different in water and air in series 1, but in series 2 CI, SI, heart rate, systolic and diastolic arterial pressures were higher in water. Plasma ANP was higher after immersed exercises. During recovery, CI was similar after either exercise, while SI was lower and heart rate higher following immersion, consistent with a lower effective circulatory volume than after exercise in air. TFC was high, as reflecting an increased interstitial fluid content in the lung. Conclusions Cardiovascular requirements for exercising in water were markedly higher than in air and straining of lung parenchyma.

Thirty-nine essays explore the vast diversity of video game history and culture across all the world's continents.Video games have become a global industry, and their history spans dozens of national industries where foreign imports compete with domestic productions, legitimate industry contends with piracy, and national identity faces the global marketplace. Abstract

Resume La prise en charge d’une infertilite masculine fait appel a un examen clinique, a des examens biologiques (spermogramme, bilan hormonal) et a un bilan d’imagerie. L’hypofertilite masculine est due soit a des pathologies testiculaires (infertilite secretoire), soit a un obstacle situe sur les voies seminales (infertilite excretoire). L’imagerie doit permettre de determiner avec precision le siege anatomique de l’anomalie et donc d’offrir un traitement adapte. L’echographie Doppler testiculaire couplee a l’echographie endorectale est l’examen de reference pour explorer l’homme hypofertile. L’IRM, du fait de sa bonne resolution spatiale et en contraste, permet une etude multiplanaire notamment des affections congenitales et inflammatoires du carrefour urogenital. Les principales anomalies responsables d’une infertilite masculine sont detaillees dans cet article.
