Abstract

This book assembles new methods showing the automotive engineer for the first time how hybrid vehicle configurations can be modeled as systems with discrete and continuous controls. These hybrid systems describe naturally and compactly the networks of embedded systems which use elements such as integrators, hysteresis, state-machines and logical rules to describe the evolution of continuous and discrete dynamics and arise inevitably when modeling hybrid electric vehicles. They can throw light on systems which may otherwise be too complex or recondite.Hybrid Systems, Optimal Control and Hybrid Vehicles shows the reader how to formulate and solve control problems which satisfy multiple objectives which may be arbitrary and complex with contradictory influences on fuel consumption, emissions and drivability. The text introduces industrial engineers, postgraduates and researchers to the theory of hybrid optimal control problems. A series of novel algorithmic developments provides tools for solving engineering problems of growing complexity in the field of hybrid vehicles.Important topics of real relevance rarely found in text books and research publications—switching costs, sensitivity of discrete decisions and there impact on fuel savings, etc.—are discussed and supported with practical applications. These demonstrate the contribution of optimal hybrid control in predictive energy management, advanced powertrain calibration, and the optimization of vehicle configuration with respect to fuel economy, lowest emissions and smoothest drivability. In this chapter another type of methods to solve optimal control problems is discussed. Direct methods transform the original problem via a discretization of the control and the state functions on a time grid to a nonlinear constrained optimization problem. This procedure is known as direct transcription of an optimal control problem and refers to the method of approximating the infinite-dimensional problem by a finite-dimensional one and to solve it with nonlinear programming algorithms.

Abstract

This chapter discusses predictive control strategies for minimizing tank-to-wheel/tank-to-meters energy losses. An eco-driving management for battery electric vehicles known as predictive trip management is proposed and is implemented using a dynamic programming algorithm to calculate the recommended maximal vehicle speed to safely reach the target destination. This strategy is implemented on a rapid- prototyping hardware on PC level and is demonstrated on a subcompact BEV vehicle. Two different predictive real-time energy managements for (Plug-) HEVs are proposed and both use an indirect shooting method to solve a (switched) optimal control problem. The control strategies are implemented on a rapid prototype hardware on ECU level as (event-triggered) nonlinear model-predictive control. The PHEV strategy can be configured for the operation modes: charge-sustaining and charge-blending. The latter is used when the target destination provides a charging facility and the total driving distance exceeds the electrical range for the current state of charge. In this case the entire electrical energy can be depleted but the internal combustion engine has to be started several times, to prevent the high-voltage battery from falling below its minimum value before the target destination is reached.

Abstract

In this chapter, a set of optimal control problems are formulated and the appropriate algorithms described in this book will be applied to their solution. Results are then compared and the applicability of each algorithm is discussed. Yet, obtaining information for the calibration and functional design of energy management from the solution of an optimal control problem is a rather heuristic and cumbersome process and it is rather unlikely that a satisfying calibration will be obtained in a reasonable time span. Also, this process does not exploit the full potential of the underlying theory. With some further assumptions that have only minor effects on the quality of the solution, results from the optimal control problem solution can be used directly to obtain parameters and lookup tables for rule-based energy management, which dramatically facilitates the calibration process and improves the quality of the results obtained.

Whenever a dynamic system has continuous-valued control inputs and states, but can switch between multiple subsystems with different dynamical behaviors, different numbers of active inputs and states, etc., then the dynamic system can be modeled as a hybrid system. Hybrid systems occur naturally in many technical applications as well as in applications from natural sciences as biology or chemistry. A simple example of a discrete decision may be the on/off command of a heating system. More complex decisions are gear choices or different operation modes of the internal combustion engine in automotive applications. In this book, the focus is on switched systems, a subclass of hybrid systems that switch between subsystems only in response to a command. This subclass already covers a great range of technical problems. This chapter provides the basic definitions for switched systems necessary to formulate optimal control problems.

The direct transcription methods of optimal control problems lead to large-scale nonlinear programming problems. One suitable framework for the solution of this type of optimization problems is sequential quadratic programming, which is described in Chap. 2. But it is crucial for large-scale applications, that the SQP-algorithm takes into account the particular properties and structure of the objective and constraint functions. The Karush–Kuhn–Tucker matrices, which occur in the subproblems, must be sparse, so that the linear equation systems can be efficiently solved. To accomplish this task for general problems the structure of the matrix must be determined, the derivatives have to be calculated, and a sparse Quasi-Newton update has to be implemented.

Bei Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans handelt es sich um ein Gram-negatives, unbewegliches, kokkoides Stabchen. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans ist bekannt als Ausloser einer aggressiven Parodontitis und Begleitkeim der Aktinomykose. Wir berichten uber eine Patientin, bei der unter oraler Antibiose mit Cefpodoxim und chirurgischem Debridement eine seit einem Bagatelltrauma bestehende, chronische Wunde uber der rechten Ferse abheilte. Bakteriologisch konnte reichlich Wachstum von Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans nachgewiesen werden, jedoch keine Aktinomyzeten. Die mogliche Bedeutung von Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans als Verursacher chronischer Wunden soll verdeutlicht werden.

The study reveals that stroke patients today can still experience gaps in the provision of healthcare and fragmented therapy. This is often the case on transferral from the inpatient to outpatient sector, causing complications that could be avoided by means of good discharge management across all sectors. Private health insurance can actively support and positively influence the treatment process in the form of case management. Individual contact with stroke patients and their relatives allows for early planning and organisation of the next steps, and offers patients the support they need during a difficult phase of life.

Abstract

The incidence of osteoporotic pelvic fractures is rapidly increasing. Following low energy trauma fractures are frequently classified as pelvic girdle fractures. Based on the pelvic expert group database of the German Trauma Society the estimated rate of osteoporotic pelvic ring fractures is about 51%. In cases of fractured pubic rami standard X-ray in anterior-posterior, inlet and outlet views should be carried out by computed tomography (CT) scanning to identify fractures of the sacrum. Only if pain persists and no fracture is evident with CT is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated. Therapy should be carried out under biomechanical instability aspects. Pubic rami fractures are stable and treated conservatively with sufficient pain medication, thromboembolic prophylaxis and physiotherapy. In cases of persisting pain or biomechanical instability operative treatment is indicated and stabilization methods should be chosen under biomechanical aspects. Therefore external fixator for pubic rami fractures and iliosacral screws, optionally with cement augmentation for posterior pelvic girdle fractures are the preferred techniques. Sacral fractures with severe osteolysis should be stabilized by lumbopelvic fixation techniques.

Abstract

Background Mid-shaft clavicular fractures are mainly treated conservatively with an average incidence of non-union in 4.5 %. Gender, age, grade of fragment dislocation and comminution are risk factors to develop a pseudarthrosis. In contrast to patients who where operated on, conservative treatment was also associated with a higher complication rate and pain level as well as a poor shoulder function and cosmetic result. Therefore more patients are treated operatively, especially modern minimally invasive techniques have been developed and remain as equals to the standard plate fixation. PATIENTS/MATERIAL: Within a period of 24 months patients with a mid-shaft clavicular fracture were included into a prospective, non-randomised multicentre study. A modified AO classification was used. Patients were treated either conservatively, by plating or intramedullary nailing. Pain level, cosmetic result, shoulder function and complication rate were documented as well as the influence of the profession on the therapeutic strategy and duration of unfitness for work. Results 120 patients (95 male, 25 female) were included in the study. Fractures were caused in 35 (29 %) by a direct, in 85 (71 %) by an indirect trauma mechanism. Because of their lower grade fractures with overlapping fragments 47 (39 %) patients were treated conservatively with a figure-of-eight-bandage. Patients with higher graded fractures and fragment displacement were stabilised either by intramedullary nailing (n = 20, 27 %) or plate fixation (n = 53, 73 %). 96 (80 %) patients were examined at a follow-up of eight weeks and eight months after injury. Early freedom from pain (p = 0.014), a better cosmetic result (p = 0.1) and an improved subjective (p = 0.004) and objective (p = 0.01) shoulder function were statistically significant in operated patients. Clavicle shortening was often found to be significant in conservatively treated patients (p = 0.006). Duration of unfitness for work depended on the physical activity in the job. The complication rate was 15 % for each therapy, non-union was detected in one (0.8 %) patient. Conclusion Mid-shaft clavicular fractures have to be classified by the criteria contact and number of fragments. Advantages of operative procedures are early freedom from pain and shoulder function recovery. Non-displaced low grade shaft fractures without shortening should be treated conservatively, whereas displaced low-grade shaft fractures have a better result after intramedullary nailing. Plate fixation should be predominantly used in dislocated and comminuted fractures as well as in patients with a high level of physical activity in their jobs.

Hintere Beckenringfrakturen sind oft mit Verletzungen der lumbopelvinen Weichteile assoziiert. In einer prospektiven Studie sollte die Inzidenz rupturierter Iliolumbalbander bei Beckenringfrakturen Typ B und C geklart werden. Zusatzlich wurde der Einfluss der triangularen vertebropelvinen Abstutzung (TVPA) zur Stabilisierung hinterer Beckenringfrakturen Typ C auf die lumbopelvine Region untersucht. Zwanzig Patienten wurden prospektiv mit einer Beckenringfraktur Typ B oder C magnetresonanztomographisch (1,5 T) untersucht. Retrospektiv wurden 30 Patienten hinsichtlich chronischer Schmerzen und klinischer lumbopelviner Instabilitaten nachuntersucht sowie Rontgenfunktionsaufnahmen der LWS angefertigt. Drei Patienten (einmal Becken-B-, 2-mal Becken-C-Fraktur) hatten eine inkomplette Ruptur des Lig. iliolumbale. Bei 5 Patienten korrelierte signifikant die Schmerzsymptomatik mit der klinisch und radiologisch gesicherten Instabilitat bei Materialauslockerung. Beckenringfrakturen Typ B und C konnen mit Verletzungen des Lig. iliolumbale assoziiert sein. Lumbopelvine Instabilitaten treten zusammen mit einer fruhzeitigen Auslockerung der TVPA auf.

Abstract

SummaryEndovenous procedures are increasingly being used to eliminate epifascial variose veins. The radiofrequency therapies VNUS Closure and VNUS Closure FAST Catheter have established themselves and boast very good results compared to other endovenous procedures with regard to closure rates and postoperative quality of life. Equipment and method: Between February 2005 and December 2009, a total of 2413 patients comprising 3366 great and small saphenous veins were operated upon at the Vascular and Venous Diseases Department of DERMATOLOGIKUM HAMBURG. 2241 great and small saphenous veins were treated with the VNUS Closure FAST catheter, 1125 great and small saphenous veins were treated with the Closure PLUS catheter system. Additionally, 264 recurrent varicose veins were treated with the Closure FAST system. Ultrasound examinations were conducted 7 days after the treatment, again 6 weeks after the treatment, and at the follow-up examination one year after treatment. Any recanalisations were treated immediately. Between January 2007 and January 2009, 57 patients were also treated for perforant veins between stages C-4 and C-6. Gender and age distributions, as well as CEAP classifications corresponded to standard distributions. Compression stockings were only administered in the case of advanced chronic venous insufficiency (C-4 to C-6). The patients were anticoagulated before treatment by means of a low molecular weight heparin as a single shot prophylactic. Anticoagulation through thrombocyte aggregation inhibitors or dicumarin was continued. Results: 1089 great and small saphenous veins were examined after removal with Closure PLUS radiofrequency therapy. The primary closure rate after 6 weeks was 98.9%; after one year, 91.2%; after two years 99.0%; after three years, 98.2%; and after four years, 100%. 2241 great and small saphenous veins were treated with the VNUS Closure FAST Radiofrequency System. 2096 great and small saphenous veins were examined after treatment. The primary closure rate after 7 days was 99.7%; after 6 weeks, 99.6%; after one year, 98.8%; and after two years, 100%. The rate of minor complications after Closure FAST Radiofrequency catheter treatment of the great saphenous vein was 5.3%; after treatment of the small saphenous vein, 5.9% in total. No major complications – such as deep vein thromboses or pulmonary embolisms – were caused, and neither was burning of the skin. The closure rate one week after RFS treatment was 84.6%; after 6 weeks, 86.2%; and after one year, 78.3%. In all of the recurring varicose veins, the recirculation was successfully eliminated. Conclusion: The VNUS Closure FAST Radiofrequency catheter represents a standardised, established procedure for treating epifascial varicose veins to ensure the certain elimination of recirculation. The development of Closure PLUS 6-French and 8-French catheter into Closure FAST Radiofrequency catheter has led not only to a reduced operation duration but also a safe and high closure rate after follow-up. With the new concept of segmental ablation the Closure FAST system eliminates the catheter pullback variability and standardises and simplifies the procedure. The success of the treatment is shown by the complete decomposition of the vein underneath the inflow of the superficial epigastric vein or the inflow of the gastrocnemic veins. However, the long term results for the Closure FAST system are awaited eagerly. The current high closure rates and high patient satisfaction rates give us cause to look ahead with hope.

Because of the increased spreading of ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) in Germany and due to the high allergenic potential of ragweed pollen, increasing diseases related to ragweed are likely. Ragweed blooms in the second half of the year (July to August), therefore polysensitized persons may suffer the entire year from allergic reactions. Since 1992, the sentinel health public offices have carried out allergy screenings on school children of grade 4 (approximately 10 years old) from the state of Baden-Wurttemberg. Since 2004, allergy screening for Ambrosia artemisiifolia and other allergens, which are known to trigger cross-reactions with ragweed as well as the native major allergen of ragweed and mugwort, Amb a 1 respectively Art v 1, were included in those investigations. Since 1992, no or a slight increase in the sensitization against the sxl-test (atopie screening) could be demonstrated in the investigations as well as in the results of questionnaires filled out by parents about the medical diagnosis of asthmatic diseases of the screened children. Atotal of 2,678 children were examined. 36.6% of them were sensitized against the sx1-test, 14.6% against the native Ambrosia artemisiifolia-allergen, 2.4% against the native major allergen of ragweed (Amb a 1) and 5.5% against the native major allergen of mugwort (Art v1). There was a high cross-reaction from native Ambrosia artemisiifolia-allergen to mugwort-allergen and to other allergens. The data on such positive sensitization does not necessarily involve a clinical relevance. Only a suitable differential diagnosis may give answers on the clinical importance. Even though from the current state of spread of ragweed no conclusion can be drawn on potential health risks, the further spreading of ragweed should be prevented in the terms of the precautionary principle and of the consideration of proportionality.

Abstract

Class II genes of the bovine major histocompatibility complex (MHC) were investigated by Southern blot analysis using human cDNA probes for DQ alpha, DQ beta, DR alpha and DR beta. The presence of a DQ-like and a DR-like subregion in cattle was clearly indicated. Highly polymorphic restriction fragment patterns were obtained when genomic DNA, digested with any one of the BamHI, EcoRI or PvuII restriction enzymes, was hybridized with the DQ alpha and the DQ beta probe. The polymorphisms were interpreted genetically by analysing five paternal half-sib families of the Swedish Red and White breed. The material comprised, besides the bulls, 28 offspring and their dams. The analysis resolved 9 and 12 allelic variants of DQ alpha and DQ beta respectively. Thus, this investigation establishes a method for routine typing of MHC class II gene polymorphism in cattle. The results were entirely consistent with close linkage of DQ alpha and DQ beta since no recombinant was found and since alleles at these loci occurred in complete linkage disequilibrium in the material investigated. Close linkage between DQ and the blood group locus M, which has previously been found to be closely linked to the serologically defined BoLA-A locus, was also indicated. In this study DNA was isolated from frozen semen samples of dead bulls, which shows that this type of analysis will be useful in genetic investigations in cattle breeds, where artificial insemination is practised.

Abstract

A patient presented suffering from neural pain in the medial foot for a period of over 20 years.Diagnostic showed a widely spread soft-tissue tumor consisting of confluent glomuvenous malformations that was responsible for the immense pain syndrome.The solitary or multiform-appearing knots are not compressible and manifest as the characteristic syndromes of regional pain, sensitivity to coldness, or local pressure pain. Alternatively, the patient could also be completely symptom-free.Because of the dimension of the tumor and the degree of suffering, a radical resection with simultaneous microsurgical reconstruction was carried out. Twelve weeks postoperatively, healing of the flap stabilized, the foot is fully weight-bearing, and the patient is pain-free.

Abstract

A search for gravitinos produced in e±p collisions is performed using the H1 detector at HERA. The data were taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 64.3 pb -1 for e+p collisions and 13.5 pb-1 for e -p collisions. If R-parity is not conserved, the t-channel exchange of a selectron can produce a neutralino, which, in models where the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle, subsequently decays into a photon and a light gravitino. The resulting event signature, which involves an isolated photon, a jet and missing transverse energy, is analysed for the first time at HERA. No deviation from the Standard Model is found. Exclusion limits on the cross section and on R-parity-violating Yukawa couplings are derived in a Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking scenario. The results are independent of the squark sector. Neutralinos and supersymmetric partners of the left-handed electron with masses up to 112 GeV and 164 GeV, respectively, can be ruled out at the 95% confidence level for R-parity-violating couplings λ′ equal to 1, in some parts of the parameter space of the considered model. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Measurements are presented of inclusive charm and beauty cross sections in e$^+$p collisions at HERA for values of photon virtuality Q$^2$ > 150 GeV$^2$ and of inelasticity 0.1 < y < 0.7. The charm and beauty fractions are determined using a method based on the impact parameter, in the transverse plane, of tracks to the primary vertex, as measured by the H1 vertex detector. The data are divided into four regions in Q$^2$ and Bjorken x, and values for the structure functions $F_2^{c\overline{c}}$ and $F_2^{b\overline{b}}$ are obtained. The results are found to be compatible with the predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Abstract

A search for scalar top quarks in R-parity violating supersymmetry is performed in e(+)p collisions at HERA using the H1 detector. The data, taken at roots = 319 GeV and 301 GeV, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 106 pb(-1). The resonant production of scalar top quarks t in positron quark fusion via an R-parity violating Yukawa coupling lambda' is considered with the subsequent bosonic stop decay t --> BW. The R-parity violating decay of the sbottom quark b --> dv(e) and leptonic and hadronic W decays are considered. No evidence for stop production is found in the search for bosonic stop decays nor in a search for the direct R-parity violating decay t --> eq. Mass dependent limits on lambda' are obtained in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. Stop quarks with masses up to 275 GeV can be excluded at the 95% confidence level for a Yukawa coupling of electromagnetic strength. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The proton structure function F-2(x, Q(2)) is measured in inelastic QED Compton scattering using data collected with the H1 detector at HERA. QED Compton events are used to access the kinematic range of very low virtualities of the exchanged photon, Q(2), down to 0.5 GeV2, and Bjorken x up to similar to 0.06, a region which has not been covered previously by inclusive measurements at HERA. The results are in agreement with the measurements from fixed target lepton-nucleon scattering experiments. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

A search for the Higgsstrahlung process e + e − → hZ is described, where the neutral Higgs boson h is assumed to decay into hadronic final states. In order to be sensitive to a broad range of models, the search is performed independent of the flavour content of the Higgs boson decay. The analysis is based on e + e − collision data collected by the OPAL detector at energies between 192 and 209 GeV. The search does not reveal any significant excess over the Standard Model background prediction. Results are combined with previous searches at energies around 91 and at 189 GeV. A limit is set on the product of the cross-section and the hadronic branching ratio of the Higgs boson, as a function of the Higgs boson mass. Assuming the hZ coupling predicted by the Standard Model, and a Higgs boson decaying only into hadronic final states, a lower bound of 104 GeV / c 2 is set on the mass at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract

Deep-inelastic positron-proton interactions at low values of Bjorken-x down to x \approx 4.10^-5 which give rise to high transverse momentum pi^0 mesons are studied with the H1 experiment at HERA. The inclusive cross section for pi^0 mesons produced at small angles with respect to the proton remnant (the forward region) is presented as a function of the transverse momentum and energy of the pi^0 and of the four-momentum transfer Q^2 and Bjorken-x. Measurements are also presented of the transverse energy flow in events containing a forward pi^0 meson. Hadronic final state calculations based on QCD models implementing different parton evolution schemes are confronted with the data.

Abstract

Cross sections for the production of two isolated muons up to high di-muon masses are measured in ep collisions at HERA with the H1 detector in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 71 pb-1 at a centre of mass energy of √s=319 GeV. The results are in good agreement with Standard Model predictions, the dominant process being photon-photon interactions. Additional muons or electrons are searched for in events with two high transverse momentum muons using the full data sample corresponding to 114 pb-1, where data at √s=301 GeV and √s=319 GeV are combined. Abstract

Deep-inelastic e^\pm p scattering at high squared momentum transfer Q^2 up to 30000 GeV^2 is used to search for eq contact interactions associated to scales far beyond the HERA centre of mass energy. The neutral current cross section measurements d sigma / d Q^2, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 16.4 pb^-1 of e^- p data and 100.8 pb^-1 of e^+ p data, are well described by the Standard Model and are analysed to set constraints on new phenomena. For conventional contact interactions lower limits are set on compositeness scales Lambda ranging between 1.6 - 5.5 TeV. Couplings and masses of leptoquarks and squarks in R-parity violating supersymmetry are constrained to M / lambda > 0.3 - 1.4 TeV. A search for low scale quantum gravity effects in models with large extra dimensions provides limits on the effective Planck scale of M_S > 0.8 TeV. A form factor analysis yields a bound on the radius of light quarks of R_q < 1.0 x 10^-18 m., 15 pages, 5 figures and 5 tables

Abstract

The nonobese diabetic (NOD) mouse is a useful model for human autoimmune diabetes. The gene for the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 has previously been suggested as a probable susceptibility candidate for the NOD mouse disease. In this study, we investigated how overexpression of Bcl-2 in lymphocytes might affect insulitis in NOD mice. A bcl-2 transgene expressed constitutively under the SV40-promoter and the 5'Igh enhancer, Emu, was bred onto NOD background. Two bcl-2 transgenic NOD strains were produced and analysed, one with overexpression of Bcl-2 on only B cells and the other with overexpression of Bcl-2 on both B and T cells. Subsequent to verification of expression pattern and functionality of the transgene, insulitis intensity was investigated in different backcross generations of the two transgenic strains. Overexpression of Bcl-2 on both B and T cells leads to a statistically significant protection of the mice from insulitis compared with normal littermates. Overexpression of Bcl-2 on only B cells, on the other hand, does not have any statistically significant effect on insulitis. Possible mechanisms for the effect of Bcl-2 on insulitis in NOD mice are discussed.

Abstract

Searches for first generation scalar and vector leptoquarks, and for squarks in R-parity violating SUSY models with the direct decay of the squark into Standard Model particles, have been performed using e+e- collisions collected with the OPAL detector at LEP at e+e- centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209 GeV. No excess of events is found over the expectation from Standard Model background processes. Limits are computed on the leptoquark couplings for different values of the branching ratio to electron-quark final states.

Abstract

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is a small, gram-negative, non-motile, coccobacillus. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is known to cause periodontal disease and to be associated with actinomycosis.We report a patient developed a chronic wound following trauma about the right heel. The lesion resolved after oral antibiotic therapy with cefpodoxime und surgical debridement. Bacterial cultures grew abundant Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, but no actinomyces species.The importance of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in chronic wounds needs to be explored.

Abstract

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS A 27-year-old woman presented with increased bleeding tendency and known oculocutaneous albinism. In addition to frequent nasal and gingival bleedings she had since childhood spontaneous extensive cutaneous bleedings. In addition she was extreme sensitive to UV light with visual disturbances. Bone-marrow biopsy when aged 9 years had revealed abnormal pigment-storing cells. Physical examination showed a very fair skin and hair, spontaneous nystagmus and extensive rash in the face. INVESTIGATIONS Prothrombin, partial thromboplastin and thrombin times as well as fibrinogen level were normal. On re- admission bleeding time varied greatly, while platelet count was normal. Mean platelet volume was slightly reduced. Von Willebrand antigen, factor VIII:C, factor IX:C, factor XIII and alpha (2)-antiplasmin were all normal. Aggregometry indicated abnormal platelet function; there was reduced platelet aggregation after stimulation with adenosine diphosphate. Flow cytometry of whole blood demonstrated abnormal storage function of thrombocytic delta-granules. The underlying cause of the described symptoms was shown to be a gene defect in typical location on the long arm of chromosome 10. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT The triad of tyrosinase-positive oculocutaneous albinism, abnormal thrombocytic delta-granules and ceroid deposition in the cells of the reticuloendothelial system or the bone-marrow is called Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (after those who first reported it). There is as yet no causal treatment. But the patient was advised to use a nasal spray of desmopressin for spontaneous or difficult to stop bleedings after minor injuries. Desmopressin i. v. should be given prophylactically before any operation.

Abstract

Using about 3.9 million hadronic Z decays from e + e − collisions recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies s ≈M Z , the branching ratio for the decay D − s →τ − ν τ has been measured to be BR ( D − s →τ − ν τ )=(7.0±2.1( stat )±2.0( syst ))%. This result can be used to derive the decay constant of the D − s meson: f D s =(286±44( stat )±41( syst )) MeV .

Abstract

Data on muon pair production obtained by the OPAL collaboration at centre of mass energies near the Z peak are analysed. Small angular mismatches between the directions of the two muons are used to assess the effects of initial state photon radiation and initial-final-state radiation interference on the forward-backward asymmetry of muon pairs. The dependence of the asymmetry on the invariant mass of the pair is measured in a model-independent way. Effective vector and axial-vector couplings of the Z boson are determined and compared to the Standard Model expectations., 31 pages, 8 figures, Accepted by Physics Letters B
