Abstract

Context. Protostellar jets are an important agent of star formation feedback, tightly connected with the mass-accretion process. The history of jet formation and mass ejection provides constraints on the mass accretion history and on the nature of the driving source. Aims. We characterize the time-variability of the mass-ejection phenomena at work in the class 0 protostellar phase in order to better understand the dynamics of the outflowing gas and bring more constraints on the origin of the jet chemical composition and the mass accretion history. Methods. Using the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) interferometer, we have observed the emission of the CO 2–1 and SO NJ = 54–43 rotational transitions at an angular resolution of 1.0 00 (820 au) and 0.400 (330 au), respectively, toward the intermediate mass class 0 protostellar system Cep E. Results. The CO high-velocity jet emission reveals a central component of ≤400 au diameter associated with high-velocity molecular knots that is also detected in SO, surrounded by a collimated layer of entrained gas. The gas layer appears to be accelerated along the main axis over a length scale δ0 ∼ 700 au, while its diameter gradually increases up to several 1000 au at 2000 au from the protostar. The jet is fragmented into 18 knots of mass ∼10−3 M, unevenly distributed between the northern and southern lobes, with velocity variations up to 15 km s−1 close to the protostar. This is well below the jet terminal velocities in the northern (+65 km s−1) and southern (-125 km s-1)lobes. The knot interval distribution is approximately bimodal on a timescale of ∼50–80 yr, which is close to the jet driving protostar Cep E-A and ∼150−20 yr at larger distances >1200. The mass-loss rates derived from knot masses are steady overall, with values of 2.7 x 10−5 M yr−1 and 8.9 x 10−6 M yr−1 in the northern and southern lobe, respectively. Conclusions. The interaction of the ambient protostellar material with high-velocity knots drives the formation of a molecular layer around the jet. This accounts for the higher mass-loss rate in the northern lobe. Abstract

The latest developments in astrochemistry have shown how some molecular species can be used as a tool to study the early stages of the solar-type star formation process. Among them, the more relevant species are the interstellar complex organic molecules (iCOMs) and the deuterated molecules. Their analysis give us information on the present and past history of protostellar objects. Among the protostellar evolutionary stages, Class I protostars represent a perfect laboratory in which to study the initial conditions for the planet formation process. Indeed, from a physical point of view, the Class I stage is the bridge between the Class 0 phase, dominated by the accretion process, and the protoplanetary disk phase, when planets form. Despite their importance, few observations of Class I protostars exist and very little is known about their chemical content. In this paper we review the (few) existing observations of iCOMs and deuterated species in Class I protostars. In addition, we present new observations of deuterated cyanoacetylene and thioformaldehyde towards the Class I protostar SVS13-A. These new observations allow us to better understand the physical and chemical structure of SVS13-A and compare the cyanoacetylene and thioformaldehyde deuteration with other sources in different evolutionary phases., 51 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Formation of interstellar complex organic molecules is currently thought to be dominated by the barrierless coupling between radicals on the interstellar icy grain surfaces. Previous standard DFT results on the reactivity between CH$_3$ and HCO on amorphous water surfaces, showed that formation of CH$_4$ + CO by H transfer from HCO to CH$_3$ assisted by water molecules of the ice was the dominant channel. However, the adopted description of the electronic structure of the biradical (i.e., CH$_3$/HCO) system was inadequate (without the broken-symmetry (BS) approach). In this work, we revisit the original results by means of BS-DFT both in gas phase and with one water molecule simulating the role of the ice. Results indicate that adoption of BS-DFT is mandatory to describe properly biradical systems. In the presence of the single water molecule, the water-assisted H transfer exhibits a high energy barrier. In contrast, CH$_3$CHO formation is found to be barrierless. However, direct H transfer from HCO to CH$_3$ to give CO and CH$_4$ presents a very low energy barrier, hence being a potential competitive channel to the radical coupling and indicating, moreover, that the physical insights ofthe original work remain valid., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS main journal. Abstract

Context. Low-mass protostars drive powerful molecular outflows that can be observed with millimetre and submillimetre telescopes. Various sulfuretted species are known to be bright in shocks and could be used to infer the physical and chemical conditions throughout the observed outflows. Aims. The evolution of sulfur chemistry is studied along the outflows driven by the NGC 1333-IRAS4A protobinary system located in the Perseus cloud to constrain the physical and chemical processes at work in shocks. Methods. We observed various transitions from OCS, CS, SO, and SO2 towards NGC 1333-IRAS4A in the 1.3, 2, and 3 mm bands using the IRAM NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array and we interpreted the observations through the use of the Paris-Durham shock model. Results. The targeted species clearly show different spatial emission along the two outflows driven by IRAS4A. OCS is brighter on small and large scales along the south outflow driven by IRAS4A1, whereas SO2 is detected rather along the outflow driven by IRAS4A2 that is extended along the north east-south west direction. SO is detected at extremely high radial velocity up to + 25 km s-1 relative to the source velocity, clearly allowing us to distinguish the two outflows on small scales. Column density ratio maps estimated from a rotational diagram analysis allowed us to confirm a clear gradient of the OCS/SO2 column density ratio between the IRAS4A1 and IRAS4A2 outflows. Analysis assuming non Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium of four SO2 transitions towards several SiO emission peaks suggests that the observed gas should be associated with densities higher than 105 cm-3 and relatively warm (T > 100 K) temperatures in most cases. Conclusions. The observed chemical differentiation between the two outflows of the IRAS4A system could be explained by a different chemical history. The outflow driven by IRAS4A1 is likely younger and more enriched in species initially formed in interstellar ices, such as OCS, and recently sputtered into the shock gas. Abstract

We present the first census of the interstellar Complex Organic Molecules (iCOMs) in the low-mass Class I protostar SVS13-A, obtained by analysing data from the IRAM-30m Large Project ASAI (Astrochemical Surveys At IRAM). They consist of an high-sensitivity unbiased spectral survey at the 1mm, 2mm and 3mm IRAM bands. We detected five iCOMs: acetaldehyde (CH$_3$CHO), methyl formate (HCOOCH$_3$), dimethyl ether (CH$_3$OCH$_3$), ethanol (CH$_3$CH$_2$OH) and formamide (NH$_2$CHO). In addition we searched for other iCOMs and ketene (H$_2$CCO), formic acid (HCOOH) and methoxy (CH$_3$O), whose only ketene was detected. The numerous detected lines, from 5 to 37 depending on the species, cover a large upper level energy range, between 15 and 254 K. This allowed us to carry out a rotational diagram analysis and derive rotational temperatures between 35 and 110 K, and column densities between $3\times 10^{15}$ and $1\times 10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$ on the 0."3 size previously determined by interferometric observations of glycolaldehyde. These new observations clearly demonstrate the presence of a rich chemistry in the hot corino towards SVS13-A. The measured iCOMs abundances were compared to other Class 0 and I hot corinos, as well as comets, previously published in the literature. We find evidence that (i) SVS13-A is as chemically rich as younger Class 0 protostars, and (ii) the iCOMs relative abundances do not substantially evolve during the protostellar phase., Comment: 24 pages, MNRAS in press

Abstract

Complex Organic Molecules (COMs) have been detected in the interstellar medium (ISM). However, it is not clear whether their synthesis occurs on the icy surfaces of interstellar grains or via a series of gas-phase reactions. As a test case of the COMs synthesis in the ISM, we present new quantum chemical calculations on the formation of acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) from the coupling of the HCO and CH3 radicals, both in gas phase and on water ice surfaces. The binding energies of HCO and CH3 on the amorphous water ice were also computed (2333 and 734 K, respectively). Results indicate that, in gas phase, the products could be either CH3CHO, CH4 + CO, or CH3OCH, depending on the relative orientation of the two radicals. However, on the amorphous water ice, only the CH4 + CO product is possible due to the geometrical constraints imposed by the water ice surface. Therefore, acetaldehyde cannot be synthesized by the CH3 + HCO coupling on the icy grains. We discuss the implications of these results and other cases, such as ethylene glycol and dimethyl ether, in which similar situations can occur, suggesting that formation of these molecules on the grain surfaces might be unlikely.

9. The Complex (Organic) Puzzle of the Formation of Hydrogen Cyanide and Isocyanide on Interstellar Ice Analogues.

Abstract

Aiming to constrain the surface formation of HCN and HNC in the dense interstellar medium on ice-covered dust grains, we investigate the interaction of CN radicals with H 2 O and CO ices and their subsequent reactivity with H and H 2 . CN radicals can physisorb on both ices. However, on H 2 O ice, a hemibond formation is the most common binding mode, while on CO ice, the CN-CO van der Waals complex can form NCCO with a small energy barrier. We show low barrier or barrierless pathways to the formation of HCN and HNC for the reaction H + CN on both ices. Reactivity with H 2 involves activation energy barriers to form HCN, which may be overcome by quantum tunneling, while HNC formation is unlikely. The formation of HCN and HNC competes with the formation of NH 2 CHO on H 2 O and HCOCN on CO.

10. Formation of S-Bearing Complex Organic Molecules in Interstellar Clouds via Ice Reactions with C 2 H 2 , HS, and Atomic H.

Abstract

The chemical network governing interstellar sulfur has been the topic of unrelenting discussion for the past few decades due to the conspicuous discrepancy between its expected and observed abundances in different interstellar environments. More recently, the astronomical detections of CH 3 CH 2 SH and CH 2 CS highlighted the importance of interstellar formation routes for sulfur-bearing organic molecules with two carbon atoms. In this work, we perform a laboratory investigation of the solid-state chemistry resulting from the interaction between C 2 H 2 molecules and SH radicals-both thought to be present in interstellar icy mantles-at 10 K. Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy and quadrupole mass spectrometry combined with temperature-programmed desorption experiments are employed as analytical techniques. We confirm that SH radicals can kick-start a sulfur reaction network under interstellar cloud conditions and identify at least six sulfurated products: CH 3 CH 2 SH, CH 2 CHSH, HSCH 2 CH 2 SH, H 2 S 2 , and tentatively CH 3 CHS and CH 2 CS. Complementarily, we utilize computational calculations to pinpoint the reaction routes that play a role in the chemical network behind our experimental results. The main sulfur-bearing organic molecule formed under our experimental conditions is CH 3 CH 2 SH, and its formation yield increases with the ratios of H to other reactants. It serves as a sink to the sulfur budget within the network, being formed at the expense of the other unsaturated products. 11. Streamers feeding the SVS13-A protobinary system: astrochemistry reveals accretion shocks?

Abstract

We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) high-angular resolution (∼50 au) observations of the binary system SVS13-A. More specifically, we analyse deuterated water (HDO) and sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) emission. The molecular emission is associated with both the components of the binary system, VLA4A and VLA4B. The spatial distribution is compared to that of formamide (NH 2 CHO), previously analysed in the system. Deuterated water shows an additional emitting component spatially coincident with the dust-accretion streamer, at a distance ≥120 au from the protostars, and at blue-shifted velocities (>3 km s -1 from the systemic velocities). We investigate the origin of the molecular emission in the streamer, in light of thermal sublimation temperatures calculated using updated binding energy (BE) distributions. We propose that the observed emission is produced by an accretion shock at the interface between the accretion streamer and the disk of VLA4A. Thermal desorption is not completely excluded in case the source is actively experiencing an accretion burst.

12. Non-energetic Formation of Ethanol via CCH Reaction with Interstellar H 2 O Ices. A Computational Chemistry Study.

Abstract

Ethanol (CH 3 CH 2 OH) is a relatively common molecule, often found in star-forming regions. Recent studies suggest that it could be a parent molecule of several so-called interstellar complex organic molecules (iCOMs). However, the formation route of this species remains under debate. In the present work, we study the formation of ethanol through the reaction of CCH with one H 2 O molecule belonging to the ice as a test case to investigate the viability of chemical reactions based on a "radical + ice component" scheme as an alternative mechanism for the synthesis of iCOMs, beyond the usual radical-radical coupling. This has been done by means of DFT calculations adopting two clusters of 18 and 33 water molecules as ice models. Results indicate that CH 3 CH 2 OH can potentially be formed by this proposed reaction mechanism. The reaction of CCH with H 2 O on the water ice clusters can be barrierless (because of the help of boundary icy water molecules acting as proton-transfer assistants), leading to the formation of vinyl alcohol precursors (H 2 CCOH and CHCHOH). Subsequent hydrogenation of vinyl alcohol yielding ethanol is the only step presenting a low activation energy barrier.
