Abstract

Abstract The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using $$19.7(16.3)\times 10^{20}$$ 19.7 ( 16.3 ) × 10 20 protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional $$4.7\times 10^{20}$$ 4.7 × 10 20 POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}$$ sin 2 θ 13 and the impact of priors on the $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}}$$ δ CP measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $$\sin ^2\theta _{23}$$ sin 2 θ 23 with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}$$ sin 2 θ 13 from reactors, $$\sin ^2\theta _{23}=0.561^{+0.021}_{-0.032}$$ sin 2 θ 23 = 0 . 561 - 0.032 + 0.021 using Feldman–Cousins corrected intervals, and $$\varDelta {}m^2_{32}=2.494_{-0.058}^{+0.041}\times 10^{-3}~\text {eV}^2$$ Δ m 32 2 = 2 . 494 - 0.058 + 0.041 × 10 - 3 eV 2 using constant $$\varDelta \chi ^{2}$$ Δ χ 2 intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}}=-1.97_{-0.70}^{+0.97}$$ δ CP = - 1 . 97 - 0.70 + 0.97 using Feldman–Cousins corrected intervals, and $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}}=0,\pi $$ δ CP = 0 , π is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than $$2\sigma $$ 2 σ credible level using a flat prior in $$\delta _{\textrm{CP}},$$ δ CP , and just below $$2\sigma $$ 2 σ using a flat prior in $$\sin \delta _{\textrm{CP}}.$$ sin δ CP . When the external constraint on $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}$$ sin 2 θ 13 is removed, $$\sin ^2\theta _{13}=28.0^{+2.8}_{-6.5}\times 10^{-3},$$ sin 2 θ 13 = 28 . 0 - 6.5 + 2.8 × 10 - 3 , in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. These results are consistent with previous T2K analyses.

Abstract

We report the first search result for the flux of astrophysical electron antineutrinos for energies ${ \mathcal O }(10)\,\mathrm{MeV}$ in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector. In 2020 June, gadolinium was introduced to the ultrapure water of the SK detector in order to detect neutrons more efficiently. In this new experimental phase, SK-Gd, we can search for electron antineutrinos via inverse beta decay with efficient background rejection thanks to the high efficiency of the neutron tagging technique. In this paper, we report the result for the initial stage of SK-Gd, during 2020 August 26, and 2022 June 1 with a 22.5 × 552 kton · day exposure at 0.01% Gd mass concentration. No significant excess over the expected background in the observed events is found for the neutrino energies below 31.3 MeV. Thus, the flux upper limits are placed at the 90% confidence level. The limits and sensitivities are already comparable with the previous SK result with pure water (22.5 × 2970 kton · day) owing to the enhanced neutron tagging. Operation with Gd increased to 0.03% started in 2022 June.

Abstract

Abstract The electron (anti-)neutrino component of the T2K neutrino beam constitutes the largest background in the measurement of electron (anti-)neutrino appearance at the far detector. The electron neutrino scattering is measured directly with the T2K off-axis near detector, ND280. The selection of the electron (anti-)neutrino events in the plastic scintillator target from both neutrino and anti-neutrino mode beams is discussed in this paper. The flux integrated single differential charged-current inclusive electron (anti-)neutrino cross-sections, dσ/dp and dσ/d cos(θ), and the total cross-sections in a limited phase-space in momentum and scattering angle (p > 300 MeV/c and θ ≤ 45°) are measured using a binned maximum likelihood fit and compared to the neutrino Monte Carlo generator predictions, resulting in good agreement.

Abstract

Axial Seamount, an active submarine volcano on the Juan de Fuca Ridge at 46°N, 130°W, erupted in January 1998 along 11 km of its upper south rift zone. We use ship‐based multibeam sonar, high‐resolution (1 m) bathymetry, sidescan sonar imagery, and submersible dive observations to map four separate 1998 lava flows that were fed from 11 eruptive fissures. These new mapping results give an eruption volume of 31 × 106 m3, 70% of which was in the northern‐most flow, 23% in the southern‐most flow, and 7% in two smaller flows in between. We introduce the concept of map‐scale submarine lava flow morphology (observed at a scale of hundreds of meters, as revealed by the high‐resolution bathymetry), and an interpretive model in which two map‐scale morphologies are produced by high effusion‐rate eruptions: “inflated lobate flows” are formed near eruptive vents, and where they drain downslope more than 0.5–1.0 km, they transition to “inflated pillow flows.” These two morphologies are observed on the 1998 lava flows at Axial. A third map‐scale flow morphology that was not produced during this eruption, “pillow mounds,” is formed by low effusion‐rate eruptions in which pillow lava piles up directly over the eruptive vents. Axial Seamount erupted again in April 2011 and there are remarkable similarities between the 1998 and 2011 eruptions, particularly the locations of eruptive vents and lava flow morphologies. Because the 2011 eruption reused most of the same eruptive fissures, 58% of the area of the 1998 lava flows is now covered by 2011 lava.

Abstract

There is today a growing need to accurately model the angular scattering response of metasurfaces for optical analog processing applications. However, the current metasurface modeling techniques are not well suited for such a task since they are limited to small angular spectrum transformations, as shall be demonstrated. The goal of this work is to overcome this limitation by improving the modeling accuracy of these techniques and, specifically, to provide a better description of the angular response of metasurfaces. This is achieved by extending the current methods, which are restricted to dipolar responses and weak spatially dispersive effects, so as to include quadrupolar responses and higher-order spatially dispersive components. The accuracy of the newly derived multipolar model is demonstrated by predicting the angular scattering of a dielectric metasurface placed in a vacuum. This results in a modeling accuracy that is substantially better than the standard dipolar model.

Abstract

Optical metasurfaces rely on subwavelength scale nanostructures, which puts significant constraints on nanofabrication accuracies. These constraints are becoming increasingly important, as metasurfaces are maturing toward real applications that require the fabrication of very large area samples. Here, we focus on beam steering gradient metasurfaces and show that perfect nanofabrication does not necessarily equate with best performances: metasurfaces with missing elements can actually be more efficient than intact metasurfaces. Both plasmonic metasurfaces in reflection and dielectric metasurfaces in transmission are investigated. These findings are substantiated by experiments on purposely misfabricated metasurfaces and full-wave calculations. A very efficient quasi-analytical model is also introduced for the design and simulations of metasurfaces; it agrees very well with full-wave calculations. Our findings indicate that the substrate properties play a key role in the robustness of a metasurface and the smoothness of the approximated phase gradient controls the device efficiency.

9. Urban wildlife and arborists: environmental governance and the protection of wildlife during tree care operations

Abstract

When working with urban trees, arborists can negatively impact urban wildlife. There have been recent efforts to strengthen wildlife protection and conservation during arboricultural practices, both legislatively and voluntarily through arboriculture organizations. To examine arborists’ perceptions of these environmental policies and understand their experiences with urban wildlife, we conducted an international online survey of 805 arborists. Many respondents (n = 481, 59.8%) reported being involved in tree work that resulted in wildlife injury or death, despite most respondents reportedly modifying work plans or objectives after encountering wildlife (n = 598, 74.3%). Decisions to modify or cease work were most heavily influenced by the legal protection of species, wildlife having young, and the overall management objectives. Support for new wildlife best management practices (BMPs) was high (n = 718, 90.3%), as was awareness of wildlife and arboriculture-related legislation (n = 611, 77.2%). The findings demonstrate support amongst arborists for the implementation of wildlife policies to protect wildlife in urban forestry; however, implementation of such policies would require a non-prescriptive approach that is relevant to a diversity of wildlife concerns globally, causing concern amongst arborists about the applicability of such a document. Concerns also included the economic impacts of voluntary wildlife protection policies in arboriculture, where competitors may not adhere to industry standards or best practices. Given the support of arborists for increased wildlife protection policies, we recommend the development of international wildlife-focused BMPs for arboriculture, especially as an intermediary until legislation can be implemented or more rigorously enforced.

Abstract

Background: Climate change will have significant consequences for species. Species range shifts induce the emergence of new hybrid zones or the spatial displacement of pre-existing ones. These hybrid zones may become more porous as alleles are passed from one species to another. Currently, hybridization between highly divergent species living in sympatry seems extremely limited. Indeed, this phenomenon involves breaking two barriers. The first is the pre-mating barrier, related to the reproductive phenology of the two species. The second is the post-zygotic barrier, related to the genetic divergence between these species. Here, we were interested in identifying new hybridization patterns and potential implications, especially in the context of environmental modifications.Methods: We sampled Telestes souffia and Parachondrostoma toxostoma wild specimens from different locations across France and genotyped them for SNP markers. We identified discriminant loci using F1-hybrid specimens and parental species and performed principal component analysis and Bayesian model-based clustering to analyze phylogenetic information. Furthermore, we assessed deviation in allele frequency from F1 to F2 and for Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium for F2 and assessed gene function associated with two F2 cohorts.Results: We demonstrate that by breaking the ecological barrier, massive introgressive hybridization is possible between two endemic lineages of Cyprinidae belonging to two distinct genera. For both cohorts studied (=2 cm and >2 cm), a large majority of loci (>88%) presented no deviation in allele frequency and no departure from the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. For individuals beyond the 2 cm stage, two phenomena were observed. The first was an allelic imbalance in favor of P. toxostoma, for some genomic regions, with genes involved in developmental regulatory processes, cytoskeletal organization, and chromosome organization. The second was an excess of heterozygous loci coupled with an equilibrium of allelic frequencies for genes involved in immune response and kidney/liver development. Moreover, the 2 cm-sized specimens with high mortality yielded a particular genomic signature.Conclusion: Our study displayed important results for understanding the early stages of hybridization between divergent lineages and predicting the emergence of future hybrid zones in the wild. Moreover, this hybridization generates a wide spectrum of hybrids that are a potential source of important evolutionary novelties.

Abstract

International audience; Mean values of the number of protons and neutrons of the primary fission fragments at scission are determined for the asymmetric fission of 16 fissioning isotopes, from Ac219 up to Np238. Our results confirm that the main asymmetric fission mode around the heavier uranium isotopes is indeed characterized by an average atomic number around 〈ZH〉=54 in the heavy fission fragments. However, they also unambiguously show a stabilization effect in the light fission fragments around 〈NL〉=52–54 in the neutron-deficient thorium and actinium isotopes. This is a clear signature that these deformed proton and neutron shell closures around 54 play a major role in the nuclear fission process. The evolution along the thorium chain shows that the neutron shell appears to be dominant in the asymmetric fission of the lighter thorium isotopes, in contrast to the heavier thorium isotopes for which the stabilization originates from the proton shell.

Abstract

We review three different approaches for the calculation of electromagnetic multipoles, namely, the Cartesian primitive multipoles, the Cartesian irreducible multipoles, and the spherical multipoles. We identify the latter as the best suited to describe the scattering of electromagnetic radiation, as exemplified for an amorphous silicon sphere. These multipoles are then used to calculate the optical force acting on semiconductor, dielectric or metallic particles in a wide wavelength range, from the dipolar regime down to the Mie regime.

They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants-neutron stars and black holes-are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokandeʼs response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. Once the next galactic supernova happens, this ability will be a powerful tool for guiding simulations toward a precise reproduction of the explosion mechanism observed in nature.

Abstract

Super-Kamiokande has been searching for neutrino bursts characteristic of core-collapse supernovae continuously, in real time, since the start of operations in 1996. The present work focuses on detecting more distant supernovae whose event rate may be too small to trigger in real time, but may be identified using an offline approach. The analysis of data collected from 2008 to 2018 found no evidence of distant supernovae bursts. This establishes an upper limit of 0.29 yr−1 on the rate of core-collapse supernovae out to 100 kpc at 90% C.L. For supernovae that fail to explode and collapse directly to black holes the limit reaches to 300 kpc.

Abstract

Hybrid metal-dielectric nanostructures have recently gained prominence because they combine strong field enhancement of plasmonic metals and the several low-loss radiation channels of dielectric resonators, which are qualities pertaining to the best of both worlds. In this work, an array of such hybrid nanoantennas is successfully fabricated over a large area and utilized for bulk refractive index sensing with a sensitivity of 208 nm/RIU. Each nanoantenna combines a Si cylinder with an Al disk, separated by a SiO2 spacer. Its optical response is analyzed in detail using the multipoles supported by its subparts and their mutual coupling. The nanoantenna is further modified experimentally with an undercut in the SiO2 region to increase the interaction of the electric field with the background medium, which augments the sensitivity to 245 nm/RIU. A detailed multipole analysis of the hybrid nanoantenna supports our experimental findings.

Abstract

Understanding the behavior of surfactants at interfaces is crucial for many applications in materials science and chemistry. Optical tweezers combined with trajectory analysis can become a powerful tool for investigating surfactant characteristics. In this study, we perform trap-and-track analysis to compare the behavior of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) at water–glass interfaces. We use optical tweezers to trap a gold nanoparticle and statistically analyze the particle’s movement in response to various surfactant concentrations, evidencing the rearrangement of surfactants adsorbed on glass surfaces. Our results show that counterions have a significant effect on surfactant behavior at the interface. The greater binding affinity of bromide ions to CTA+ micelle surfaces reduces the repulsion among surfactant head groups and enhances the mobility of micelles adsorbed on the interface. Our study provides valuable insights into the behavior of surfactants at interfaces and highlights the potential of optical tweezers for surfactant research. The development of this trap-and-track approach can have important implications for various applications, including drug delivery and nanomaterials.

Abstract

Abstract

Low-energy fission of and radioactive beams, provided by the Fragment Separator (FRS) of the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung facility (GSI), has been studied using the Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams / Studies on Fission with Aladin (R3B/SOFIA) setup. The latter allows us, on an event-by-event basis, to simultaneously identify, in terms of their mass and atomic numbers, the fissioning nucleus in coincidence with both fission fragments after prompt-neutron emission. This article reports new results on elemental, isotonic, isobaric, and isotopic yields. Moreover, the high accuracy of our data allowed us to study in detail proton even-odd staggering, from elemental yields; neutron excess, from isotopic yields; and total prompt-neutron multiplicity, from the difference of masses of the fissioning nucleus and fission fragments. These results are then compared to previous experimental data in order to probe how these fission observables change as function of the excitation energy and atomic and neutron numbers of the compound nucleus.

Abstract

The Super-Kamiokande detector can be used to search for neutrinos in time coincidence with gravitational waves detected by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration (LVC). Both low-energy ($7-100$ MeV) and high-energy ($0.1-10^5$ GeV) samples were analyzed in order to cover a very wide neutrino spectrum. Follow-ups of 36 (out of 39) gravitational waves reported in the GWTC-2 catalog were examined; no significant excess above the background was observed, with 10 (24) observed neutrinos compared with 4.8 (25.0) expected events in the high-energy (low-energy) samples. A statistical approach was used to compute the significance of potential coincidences. For each observation, p-values were estimated using neutrino direction and LVC sky map ; the most significant event (GW190602_175927) is associated with a post-trial p-value of $7.8\%$ ($1.4\sigma$). Additionally, flux limits were computed independently for each sample and by combining the samples. The energy emitted as neutrinos by the identified gravitational wave sources was constrained, both for given flavors and for all-flavors assuming equipartition between the different flavors, independently for each trigger and by combining sources of the same nature., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. v2: adding corrections from The Astrophysical Journal review

Abstract

Hybrid structures that combine dielectric resonators with plasmonic structures hold great promises due to the diversity of optical modes they possess. Here, we explore the physics underlying the scattering response of a hybrid nanoantenna made of a metal disk placed on top of a dielectric cylinder and study the hybridization of the different modes excited in the dielectric and metallic parts. Surprisingly, we note that the signature of an anapole state – usually only seen in high refractive index dielectrics – can be observed in the metallic part of the system. The Cartesian multipoles excited in the dielectric and metal interfere in a complex manner, leading to an unexpected high-order vector spherical multipolar response in the far-field. These effects are thoroughly studied in terms of the near-field and absorption enhancements. We also show that very fine control over the multipoles' resonant positions can be achieved by varying the geometry of the structure. This flexibility renders this system very promising for sensing applications. Based on these developments, we have designed and fabricated such hybrid nanoantennas using silicon and aluminum and measured a preliminary sensitivity of 160 nm/RIU, which is competing with conventional sensors based on localized surface plasmon resonances.

Abstract

In this work, we use finite elements simulations to study the far field properties of two plasmonic structures, namely a dipole antenna and a cylinder dimer, connected to a pair of nanorods. We show that electrical, rather than near field, coupling between the modes of these structures results in a characteristic Fano lineshape in the far field spectra. This insight provides a way of tailoring the far field properties of such systems to fit specific applications, especially maintaining the optical properties of plasmonic antennas once they are connected to nanoelectrodes. This work extends the previous understanding of Fano resonances as generated by a simple near field coupling and provides a route to an efficient design of functional plasmonic electrodes.

Abstract

We report measurements of the flux-integrated ν̅μ and ν̅μ + νμ charged-current cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets using the T2K anti-neutrino beam with a mean beam energy of 0.86 GeV. The signal is defined as the (anti-)neutrino charged-current interaction with one induced $\mu^\pm$ and no detected charged pion or proton. These measurements are performed using a new WAGASCI module recently added to the T2K setup in combination with the INGRID Proton Module. The phase space of muons is restricted to the high-detection efficiency region, $p_{\mu}>400~{\rm MeV}/c$ and $\theta_{\mu}200~{\rm MeV}/c$, $\theta_{\pi}600~{\rm MeV}/c$, $\theta_{\rm p}

Abstract

We provide a self-consistent extension of the Lorentz reciprocity theorem and the Poynting theorem for media possessing electric and magnetic dipolar and quadrupolar responses related to electric and magnetic fields and field gradients thus corresponding to weak spatial dispersion. Using these two theorems, we respectively deduce the conditions of reciprocity and gainlessness and losslessness that apply to the various tensors mediating the interactions of these multipole moments and the associated fields and field gradients. We expect that these conditions will play an essential role in developing advanced metamaterial modeling techniques that include quadrupolar and spatially dispersive responses.

Abstract

After providing a detailed overview of nanofabrication techniques for plasmonics, we discuss in detail two different approaches for the fabrication of metallic nanostructures based on e-beam lithography. The first approach relies on a negative e-beam resist, followed by ion beam milling, while the second uses a positive e-beam resist and lift-off. Overall, ion beam etching provides smaller and more regular features including tiny gaps between sub-parts, that can be controlled down to about 10 nm. In the lift-off process, the metal atoms are deposited within the resist mask and can diffuse on the substrate, giving rise to the formation of nanoclusters that render the nanostructure outline slightly fuzzy. Scattering cross sections computed for both approaches highlight some spectral differences, which are especially visible for structures that support complex resonances, such as Fano resonances. Both techniques can produce useful nanostructures and the results reported therein should guide the researcher to choose the best suited approach for a given application, depending on the available technology.

Abstract

Dielectric metasurfaces have shown prominent applications in nonlinear optics due to strong field enhancement and low dissipation losses at the nanoscale. Chalcogenide glasses are one of the promising materials for the observation of nonlinear effects thanks to their high intrinsic nonlinearities. Here, we demonstrate, experimentally and theoretically, that significant second harmonic generation (SHG) can be obtained within amorphous Selenium (Se)-based chalcogenide metasurfaces by exploiting the coupling between lattice and particle resonances. We further show that the high-quality factor resonance at the origin of the SHG can be tuned over a wide wavelength range using a simple and versatile fabrication approach. The measured second harmonic intensity is orders of magnitude higher than that from a dewetted Se film consisting of random Se nanoparticles. The achieved conversion efficiency in the resonance region is of the order of 10−6 which is comparable with direct bandgap materials and at least two orders of magnitude higher than that of conventional plasmonics- and Si-based structures. Fabricated via a simple and scalable technique, these all-dielectric architectures are ideal candidates for the design of flat nonlinear optical components on flexible substrates.

34. Multipolar origin of electromagnetic transverse force resulting from TE/TM wave interference

Abstract

In this paper, we aim at unveiling the underlying physical mechanism for transversal optical forces, appearing due to the simultaneous illumination of a spherical object with two plane waves possessing different polarizations. The appearance of such a transversal force is quite counterintuitive since it seems to contradict the law of momentum conservation. We consider the cases of perfect electric conductor (PEC) and silver spheres illuminated by two orthogonally polarized plane waves propagating obliquely with respect to each other. Interestingly, the Poynting vector in these cases acquires a nonzero component transverse to the plane of propagation. Since the momentum transfer is related to the energy transfer, or equivalently, to non-negligible Poynting vector pointed in a particular direction, an arbitrary object placed in such external field is expected to experience a transversal force. To cast light upon this peculiar effect, we use a surface integral equation method and, along with the Maxwell stress tensor formalism, find the optical force acting on various spheres. We observe this effect for PEC spheres of different sizes and find that they are indeed subject to such transversal force. We find an explanation for this phenomenon via interference effects between selected multipoles excited in the structure. With recently developed methods, we expand the optical force into contributing pairs of selected multipoles and show that, depending on the phase between each multipole pair, the sign and direction of the force can be controlled. We also compare the results for silver and PEC spheres and find that the transversal force magnitude in silver has higher values for more limited range of sphere radii, as compared to PEC.

We perform a systematic study showing the evolution of the multipoles along with the spectra for a hybrid metal-dielectric nanoantenna, a Si cylinder and an Ag disk stacked one on top of another, as its dimensions are varied one by one. We broaden our analysis to demonstrate the "magnetic light" at energies above 1 eV by varying the height of the Ag on the Si cylinder and below 1 eV by introducing insulating spacing between them. Abstract

A search for neutrinos produced in coincidence with Gamma-Ray Bursts(GRB) was conducted with the Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector. Between December 2008 and March 2017, the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network recorded 2208 GRBs that occurred during normal SK operation. Several time windows around each GRB were used to search for coincident neutrino events. No statistically significant signal in excess of the estimated backgrounds was detected. The $\bar\nu_e$ fluence in the range from 8 MeV to 100 MeV in positron total energy for $\bar\nu_e+p\rightarrow e^{+}+n$ was found to be less than $\rm 5.07\times10^5$ cm$^{-2}$ per GRB in 90\% C.L. Upper bounds on the fluence as a function of neutrino energy were also obtained., Comment: 29 pages, 16 figures, 5 tables, accepted by PTEP

Abstract

We have searched for proton decay via p→e+π0 and p→μ+π0 modes with the enlarged fiducial volume data of Super-Kamiokande from April 1996 to May 2018, which corresponds to 450 kton·years exposure. We have accumulated about 25% more livetime and enlarged the fiducial volume of the Super-Kamiokande detector from 22.5 kton to 27.2 kton for this analysis, so that 144 kton·years of data, including 78 kton·years of additional fiducial volume data, has been newly analyzed. No candidates have been found for p→e+π0 and one candidate remains for p→μ+π0 in the conventional 22.5 kton fiducial volume and it is consistent with the atmospheric neutrino background prediction. We set lower limits on the partial lifetime for each of these modes: τ/B(p→e+π0)>2.4×1034 years and τ/B(p→μ+π0)>1.6×1034 years at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

Hyper-Kamiokande is the next generation underground water Cherenkov detector that builds on the highly successful Super-Kamiokande experiment. The detector which has an 8.4~times larger effective volume than its predecessor will be located along the T2K neutrino beamline and utilize an upgraded J-PARC beam with 2.6~times beam power. Hyper-K's low energy threshold combined with the very large fiducial volume make the detector unique, that is expected to acquire an unprecedented exposure of 3.8~Mton$\cdot$year over a period of 20~years of operation. Hyper-Kamiokande combines an extremely diverse science program including nucleon decays, long-baseline neutrino oscillations, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astrophysical origins. The scientific scope of this program is highly complementary to liquid-argon detectors for example in sensitivity to nucleon decay channels or supernova detection modes. Hyper-Kamiokande construction has started in early 2020 and the experiment is expected to start operations in 2027. The Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration is presently being formed amongst groups from 19 countries including the United States, whose community has a long history of making significant contributions to the neutrino physics program in Japan. Abstract

The Endeavour Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge is well known for its abundance of hydrothermal vents and chimneys. One-meter scale multibeam mapping data collected by an autonomous undersea vehicle revealed 572 chimneys along the central 14 km of the segment, although only 47 are named and known to be active. Hydrothermal deposits are restricted to the axial graben and the near-rims of the graben above a seismically mapped axial magma lens. The sparse eruptive activity on the segment during the last 4,300 years has not buried inactive chimneys, as occurs at more magmatically robust mid-ocean ridges.

Abstract

In this Letter, we demonstrate how harmonic oscillator equations can be integrated in a neural network to improve the spectral response prediction for an optical system. We use the optical properties of a one-dimensional nanoslit array for a practical implementation of the study. This method allows to build more generalizable relations between the input parameters of the array and its optical properties, showing a 20-fold improvement for parameters outside the range used for the training. We also show how this model generates the output spectrum from phenomenological relationships between the input parameters and the output spectrum, indicating how it grasps the physical mechanisms of the optical response of the structure. Abstract

International audience; Taking benefit of the R3B/SOFIA setup to measure the mass and the nuclear charge of both fission fragments in coincidence with the total prompt-neutron multiplicity, the scission configurations are inferred along the thorium chain, from the asymmetric fission in the heavier isotopes to the symmetric fission in the neutron-deficient thorium. Against all expectations, the symmetric scission in the light thorium isotopes shows a compact configuration, which is in total contrast to what is known in the fission of the heavier thorium isotopes and heavier actinides. This new main symmetric scission mode is characterized by a significant drop in deformation energy of the fission fragments of about 19 MeV, compared to the well-known symmetric scission in the uranium-plutonium region.

Abstract

We report the measurements of single and double differential cross section of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon with a single positively charged pion in the final state at the T2K off-axis near detector using $5.56\times10^{20}$ protons on target. The analysis uses data control samples for the background subtraction and the cross section signal, defined as a single negatively charged muon and a single positively charged pion exiting from the target nucleus, is extracted using an unfolding method. The model dependent cross section, integrated over the T2K off-axis neutrino beam spectrum peaking at $0.6$~GeV, is measured to be $\sigma = (11.76 \pm 0.44 \text{(stat)} \pm 2.39 \text{(syst)}) \times 10^{-40} \text{cm}^2$~$\text{nucleon}^{-1}$. Various differential cross sections are measured, including the first measurement of the Adler angles for single charged pion production in neutrino interactions with heavy nuclei target.

Abstract

A novel approach is introduced to determine the time evolution of optical forces and torques on arbitrary shape nanostructures by combining Maxwell's stress tensor with the surface integral equation method (SIE). Conventional time averaging of Maxwell’s stress tensor allows obtaining an elegant form in terms of surface currents for the force exerted on nanostructures. Unfortunately, the information about the time dependence of the force – which can be very important in ultrafast photonics experiments and in nano-manipulation applications – is lost in such an approach. To overcome this, we have developed a time-domain method based on the inverse Fourier transform of the frequency-domain SIE. The calculations in the frequency domain allow accurately taking into account the dispersion of the permittivity function of the system and the use of surface currents enables the rigorous treatment of intricate geometries for the scatterer. Furthermore, the integration of Maxwell’s stress tensor directly on the scatterer’s boundary significantly reduces the required computation time and increases the accuracy of the method. We show quite unusual sum frequency-like terms in the dynamics of the force appearing in Maxwell’s stress tensor, which normally vanish for the time-averaged force. To illustrate this effect, we study how the pulse duration influences the dynamics of optical force in the case of a rectangular shape and Gaussian pulses illuminating thin film at normal incidence. In the framework of the developed numerical method, we study the influence of the sum-frequency-like terms on the dynamics of optical forces in the case of a spherical scatterer.

Abstract

The electron (anti-)neutrino component of the T2K neutrino beam constitutes the largest background in the measurement of electron (anti-)neutrino appearance at the far detector. The electron neutrino scattering is measured directly with the T2K off-axis near detector, ND280. The selection of the electron (anti-)neutrino events in the plastic scintillator target from both neutrino and anti-neutrino mode beams is discussed in this paper. The flux integrated single differential charged-current inclusive electron (anti-)neutrino cross-sections, dσ/dp and dσ/d cos(θ), and the total cross-sections in a limited phase-space in momentum and scattering angle (p > 300 MeV/c and θ ≤ 45°) are measured using a binned maximum likelihood fit and compared to the neutrino Monte Carlo generator predictions, resulting in good agreement., Journal of High Energy Physics, 2020 (10), ISSN:1126-6708, ISSN:1029-8479

Abstract

We investigate optical forces in the time domain, instead of using the time-average Maxwell stress tensor. We demonstrate first that a plane wave causes on a physical object an optical pressure that fluctuates at optical frequency in the time domain. The analytical formula for the optical force dynamics is presented for this case. The case for two-wave illumination with slightly different frequencies is considered next. It is shown that in this case the optical force acquires a component at the beating frequency. The analytical expression for the transient force is deduced and its relation with average force explained in detail.

Abstract

The silencing of the second harmonic generation process from plasmonic nanostructures corresponds to the limited far-field second harmonic radiation despite the huge fundamental electric field enhancement in the interstice between two plasmonic nanoparticles forming a nanodimer. In this article, we report a comprehensive investigation of this effect using a surface integral equation method. Various geometries are considered, including nanoantennas with cylindrical and rectangular arms as well as nanodimers with surface defects. The existence of the silencing of the second harmonic generation from plasmonic nanogaps is first confirmed, and the problem of the origin of the second harmonic light from these plasmonic nanostructures is addressed in detail. Our results show that the distribution of the second harmonic sources, especially on the arm sides, plays a non-negligible role in the overall second harmonic emission. This contribution is induced by retardation effects at the pump wavelength and results in a dipolar second harmonic emission.

Abstract

Second-harmonic generation in plasmonic nanostructures is known to enable the observation of modes with vanishing dipolar moments, i.e., having small radiation losses and thus long lifetimes. With the aid of a full wave numerical method, we study the far-field temporal dynamics of the linear and nonlinear responses of a silver nanorod driven by femtosecond pulses. The results show that the plasmons lifetime is observable in the decaying field oscillations surviving after the exciting pulse, for both processes, and fits with the damped harmonic oscillator model. In addition, using a detailed mode analysis, we find that the multipolar characteristic of the nonlinear radiation is strongly influenced by both the pulse central frequency and width. Implications for the accurate measurement of plasmon lifetime with the help of nonlinear optics are discussed, especially the need to carefully disentangle the linear and nonlinear plasmon dynamics.
