Ramularia leaf spot is a major economic disease of barley caused by the dothidiomycete fungus Ramulariacollo-cygni. The fungus has a complex life cycle which includes extensive late season spore release events and a seed-borne phase. Predicting disease epidemics during the growing season remains a difficult challenge. To better understand the interaction between spore movement and disease epidemics, spore samplers were set up in Germany (two sites over 4 years), Poland (seven sites over 2 years) and the UK (two sites over 9 years), where the disease has been observed. Spore concentrations were determined using a real time PCR assay, and meteorological data were obtained from co-located automatic stations. Spore release events were seen to peak in June on mainland Europe and July in the UK. The pattern of spore release was broadly similar across countries with earlier peaks in mainland Europe. A relationship was observed in the UK between July spore levels and disease in following winter barley crops. Rainfall and temperature were proposed as significant drivers of spore release in these months. The major environmental parameter associated with spore release across the two UK sites was crop surface wetness, although some site-specific interactions were noted for rainfall and wind movement. Regression analysis of spore patterns and disease epidemics indicates a relationship between spore levels 75–105 days pre harvest and final disease levels in UK winter barley crops. This relationship was not observed in spring barley. The implications on risk forecasts are discussed.

Lynch syndrome (LS), an autosomal dominant disorder caused by pathogenic germline variants in DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes, represents the most common hereditary colorectal cancer (CRC) syndrome. Lynch syndrome patients are at high risk of CRC despite regular endoscopic surveillance.Our aim was to investigate the diagnostic performance of artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted colonoscopy in comparison to High-Definition white-light endoscopy (HD-WLE) for the first time.Patients ≥18 years with LS, with a pathogenic germline variant (MLH1, MHS2, MSH6), and at least one previous colonoscopy (interval 10-36 months) were eligible. Patients were stratified by previous CRC and affected MMR gene with a 1:1 allocation ratio (AI-assisted vs. HD white-light endoscopy) in this exploratory pilot trial.Between Dec-2021 and Dec-2022, 101 LS patients were randomised and 96 patients were finally analyzed after exclusion of 5 patients due to insufficient bowel preparation. In the HD-WLE arm, adenomas were detected in 12/46 patients compared to 18/50 in the AI arm (26.1% [95% CI 14.3-41.1] vs. 36.0% [22.9-50.8]; p = 0.379). The use of AI-assisted colonoscopy especially increased detection of flat adenomas (Paris classification 0-IIb) (examinations with detected flat adenomas: 3/46 [6.5%] vs. 10/50 [20%]; p = 0.07; numbers of detected flat adenomas: 4/20 vs. 17/30, p = 0.018). The median withdrawal time did not differ significantly between HD-WLE and AI (14 vs. 15 min; p = 0.170).We here present first data suggesting that real-time AI-assisted colonoscopy is a promising approach to optimize endoscopic surveillance in LS patients, in particular to improve the detection of flat adenomas.

Poland’s inhabitants have often expressed disbelief and negative attitudes toward social isolation, combined with restlessness. This is due to a tendency to discount troubling informa tion while facing the unknown and counter-argue against information that causes discomfort and fear. This tendency helps humans to maintain hope and well-being. The study aimed to determine if Polish citizens tend to downplay or even deny danger when faced with a death threat. The study comprised 58 adults – 46 females 12 males, aged 21 to 49. The participants were asked to answer 12 questions defining their beliefs and attitudes towards the COVID-19 pandemic threat and its consequences. The subjects gave answers on the 5-point Likert scale, from "definitely not" to "definitely yes". The findings of the present study show that a considerable number of the participants tend to exhibit an optimistic bias. This is reflected in their direct statements and in the lack of congruence of their opinions. They do feel the threat of becoming ill but also seem to believe it need not affect them personally. They are also relatively optimistic about the outcomes of the pandemic. At the same time, they realize that COVID-19 may lead to severe psychological, neurological, and mental disorders. The study confirmed a tendency to deny the threat that can pose a severe risk to health and psychological well-being. This is a manifestation of an optimism bias that has its roots in the way the human brain works. The participants did express concerns about the future but at the same time hoped that life after the pandemic would return to normal. It reflects a benevolent facet of self-deception since it makes it possible to cope with highly threatening and impossible to control events.

Background: The anti-DFS70 autoantibodies are one of the most commonly and widely described agent of unknown clinical significance, frequently detected in healthy individuals. It is not known whether the DFS70 autoantibodies are protective or pathogenic. One of the factors suspected of inducing the formation of anti-DFS70 antibodies is increased oxidative stress. We evaluated the coexistence of anti-DFS70 antibodies with selected markers of oxidative stress and investigated whether these antibodies could be considered as indirect markers of oxidative stress. Methods: The intensity of oxidative stress was measured in all samples via indices of free-radical damage to lipids and proteins such as total oxidant status (TOS), concentrations of lipid hydroperoxides (LPH), lipofuscin (LPS), and malondialdehyde (MDA). The parameters of the non-enzymatic antioxidant system, such as total antioxidant status (TAS) and uric acid concentration (UA), were also measured, as well as the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD). Based on TOS and TAS values, the oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated. All samples were also tested with indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and 357 samples were selected for direct monospecific anti DFS70 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) testing. Results: The anti-DFS70 antibodies were confirmed by ELISA test in 21.29% of samples. Compared with anti-DFS70 negative samples we observed 23% lower concentration of LPH ( P = .038) and 11% lower concentration of UA ( P = .005). TOS was 20% lower ( P = .014). The activity of SOD was up to 5% higher ( P = .037). The Pearson correlation showed weak negative correlation for LPH, UA, and TOS and a weak positive correlation for SOD activity. Conclusion: In samples positive for the anti-DFS70 antibody a decreased level of oxidative stress was observed, especially in the case of samples with a high antibody titer. Anti-DFS70 antibodies can be considered as an indirect marker of reduced oxidative stress or a marker indicating the recent intensification of antioxidant processes.

Endoscopic vacuum therapy (EVT) has become a standard treatment method for esophageal perforations in adults. However, experience with EVT in infants is scarce. In this retrospective case series, we report on four very young infants who were successfully treated with EVT for esophageal perforations of different etiology.Four infants were diagnosed with esophageal perforations on day 7, 32, 35 and 159 of life, respectively. The youngest one was prematurely born in the 31Complete closure of the perforation/leakage could be achieved in all four infants (100%) after 22 days of continuous EVT (median value; range 7-39) and 4.5 EVT exchanges (median value; range 1-12). No serious adverse events occurred.EVT is an effective and safe addition to our therapeutic armamentarium in the management of esophageal perforations irrespective of its etiology. Here we prove the feasibility of EVT even in very young infants. The use of an extra thin vacuum open-pore drainage film is helpful to cope with the small esophageal diameter. EVT settings and exchange rates similar to those known from adult treatment were used.

IntroductionThe image of a politician primes people to judge his/her personality traits. Voters are looking for such qualities as honesty, intelligence, friendliness, sincerity, and trustworthiness. Most studies, however, concentrate on the evaluation of faces, and only some take into account the candidate’s attire.Material and methodsThe research included 320 participants between 18 and 78 years. It aimed to assess whether the parliamentary candidate’s attire affects voters’ evaluation of his personality traits. A description of his program was also presented to determine whether it affected the candidate’s evaluation. Participants observed four versions of a fictional candidate’s election materials: the candidate dressed in a formal suit or dressed casually and dressed formally or casually but bearing a doctor’s degree. We used a self-constructed questionnaire to evaluate selected traits of the candidate’s character.ResultsThe findings revealed that participants believed an individual in casual wear to be more active, attractive, open to people and the world, friendly, honest, and reliable, and only more smart, and effective while dressed formally. Also, the academic degree proved to be of importance. Accordingly, the same person with a doctorate was additionally evaluated as competent, responsible when dressed casually, and responsible when wearing a suit. It confirms the assumption that the informal dress and academic degree are most influential. The program description proved to be of no significance.ConclusionsOur study shows that the way the candidate was dressed affected the evaluation of his personality characteristics. The participants attributed the casually dressed candidate the traits expected from a politician.

One of the primary challenges facing synthetic biology is reconstituting a living system from its component parts. A particularly difficult landmark is reconstituting a self-organizing system that can undergo autonomous chromosome compaction, segregation, and cell division. Here, we discuss how the syn3.0 minimal genome can inform us of the core self-organizing principles of a living cell and how these self-organizing processes can be built from the bottom up. The review underscores the importance of fundamental biology in rebuilding life from its molecular constituents.

Post-tetanic potentiation (PTP) of force depends on intramuscular Ca2+ levels and sensitivity and may be affected by fatigue. The aim of this study was to determine the ability of isolated fast fatigue-resistant (FR) and fast-fatigable (FF) motor units (MUs) to potentiate force evoked with single and 40-Hz electrical stimulation after 5 weeks of voluntary weight-lifting training. Tetanic contractions evoked by gradually increasing (10–150 Hz) stimulation frequency served as conditioning stimulation. Additionally, the concentration of myosin light chain kinase and proteins engaged in calcium handling was measured in rat fast medial gastrocnemius muscle. After the training, the potentiation of twitch force and peak rate of force development was increased in FF but not FR MUs. Force potentiation of 40-Hz tetanic contractions was increased in both fast MU types. After the training, the twitch duration of FR MUs was decreased, and FF MUs were less prone to high-frequency fatigue during conditioning stimulation. Muscle concentration of triadin was increased, whereas concentrations of ryanodine receptor 1, junctin, FKBP12, sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase 1, parvalbumin, myosin light chain kinase, and actomyosin adenosine triphosphatase content were not modified. After short-term resistance training, the twitch contraction time and twitch:tetanus force ratio of FR MUs are decreased, and PTP ability is not changed. However, PTP capacity is increased in response to submaximal activation. In FF MUs increase in PTP ability coexists with lesser fatigability. Further work is required to find out if the increase in triadin concentration has any impact on the observed contractile response.

Fully digital impedance bridges are emerging as measuring instruments for primary electrical impedance metrology and the realization of impedance units and scales. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of electronic fully digital impedance bridges for both generating (based on digital-to-analog converters) and digitizing (based on analog-to-digital converters) bridges. The sources of measurement error are analyzed in detail and expressed by explicit mathematical formulas ready to be applied to the specific bridge and measurement case of interest. The same can be employed also as a basis to optimize the design and the operating parameters of digital bridges and evaluate the measurement uncertainty. A practical application of the analysis to the digital bridges developed and measurements performed in the framework of an international research project is presented.

Background and aims: An inverse relationship between lipid levels and atrial fibrillation (AF) has been suggested, but whether the association is upheld for all age groups remains unclear. The aim of the study was to examine associations between lipid levels and AF by age groups in a nationwide study in Poland. Methods: Multivariate Poisson regression models were used to estimate prevalence ratios (PRs) for AF by lipid levels. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), non-HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C ratios were grouped into quartiles. Results: Of the 13,724 participants, 5.2% (n = 708) had AF. People with AF were older with more comorbidities, but lower lipid levels (all p < 0.05). The prevalence of AF was inversely associated with LDL-C (Adjusted PR (95% Confidence Interval) highest versus lowest quartile: 0.60 (0.48, 0.75)), TC (0.61 (0.49, 0.75)) and non-HDL-C (0.63 (0.51, 0.78)). The prevalence of AF was inversely associated with HDL-C (0.58 (0.46, 0.74)), but this was not statistically significant for people aged 75 years and older. For the LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, the prevalence of AF was only inversely associated with higher levels for people aged 75 years and older (0.75 (0.61, 0.94)). There was no statistically significant difference in prevalence of AF by TG levels. Conclusions: The results suggest an inverse relationship between lipid levels and AF. The early and definitive diagnosis of malignant bile duct stenoses is essential for a timely and adequate therapy. However, tissue sampling with transpapillary brush cytology (BC) or forceps biopsy (FB) remains challenging. With this study, we aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of different tissue sampling modalities (BC, FB without/after previous balloon dilatation). Standardized database research identified all patients, who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiography with BC and/or FB for indeterminate bile duct stenosis between January 2010 and April 2018 and with a definitive diagnosis. 218 patients were enrolled (149 cases with malignant and 69 with benign disease). Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults. The development of distant metastases is associated with a poor prognosis. Ephrine receptors (Eph) are the largest subpopulation of tyrosine kinase receptors. They play an important role in processes related to the formation and progression of cancer. The aim of the study was to evaluate the expression of ephrin receptors EphA1, EphA5, and EphA7 in uveal melanoma and its associations with clinicopathological parameters, overall survival, and disease-free survival. The study included 94 previously untreated patients who underwent enucleation due to uveal melanoma. High expression of EphA1 was positively correlated with a smaller tumor size, less frequent extra-scleral extension, lower mitotic activity, and more frequent vitreous hemorrhage. High expression of EphA5 was associated with less frequent chromosome 3 loss, absence of distant metastases, and more frequent vitreous hemorrhage. High expression of EphA7 was associated with a more frequent primary tumor location in the posterior pole. High EphA5 expression was associated with longer overall survival time. The above findings indicate that high expression of EphA1 and EphA5 can be considered a beneficial prognostic factor in uveal melanoma. © 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

We present here a comprehensive analysis of the error sources in electronic fully-digital impedance bridges, for both sourcing and digitizing bridges. This work can be used as a basis to optimize the design and the operating parameters of digital bridges, and in the evaluation of the uncertainty.

Our thinking is grounded in our sensory, motor, affective, and interpersonal experience. Recent psychological studies confirmed that our cognition is not only embodied but also embedded since it arises from interactions with its social and cultural environments, which makes it possible to create image schemas and conceptual metaphors. Those schemas facilitate acting in everyday, routine situations, but make it difficult to depart from them since they are frames that limit our ability to see the alternatives. They are intricately linked to our world view and, therefore, resistant to changes because the latter threaten the feeling of security. This paper is aimed at evaluating people’s ability to change the existing schema. In the study, participants were asked to create a completely new story based on two well.known stories in which they had previously inserted the missing words. It was found that most participants exhibited considerable difficulties in departing from the formerly established schemas. Moreover, the emotionally loaded story proved to be more difficult to change.

This paper presents a sampling measurement system designed to compare ac standard resistors within a range from 1 $\text{m}\Omega $ to 10 $\Omega $ at frequencies ranging from 40 Hz to 10 kHz and for measurement currents up to 10 A. The system allows simultaneous measurement of both components of impedance of the calibrated resistor relative to the reference resistor. Built on the basis of commercial PXI modules, complemented by modules developed by the authors, the system stands out relatively simple structure and fully automatic operation. In order to reduce the impact of parasitic impedances on the comparison accuracy, a completely automated interchange method and the original way of connecting a digitizer to the compared impedances were applied. The consistency of the measured ac resistance ratios from 1:1 to 1:10 is better than 1 $\mu \Omega /\Omega $ and phase difference better than 6 $\mu $ rad, over the entire frequency range. The results of several comparisons and the analysis of their uncertainty show that for the comparisons of resistors with a resistance ratio close to one, the relative uncertainty of the resistance ratio measurement is 2.3 $\mu \Omega /\Omega $ ( $k=2$ ) over the entire frequency range. The uncertainty of the difference between the time constants of the compared resistors is at the level of 0.2 ns ( $k=2$ ) at 1 kHz.

The core objective of EMPIR project 17RPT04 VersICaL is to improve the European measurement infrastructure for electrical impedance, with particular emphasis on the capabilities of developing NMIs and calibration centres. The project will seek to exploit the results of existing research on digital impedance bridges (DIBs) by designing, constructing and validating simple, affordable versions suitable to realise the impedance scale in the range 1 nF to 10 μF and 1 mH to 10 H with relative uncertainties in the range 10-5 to 10-6. The first results of the research project, including the bridge designs and details of a polyphase digitally synthesized multichannel source capable of providing voltage outputs of precise ratio and phase are presented.

High-resolution multiplying digital-to-analog converters (MDACs) are often used as digitally controlled ac voltage dividers in precise instruments and measurement systems. Proper application of these converters requires knowledge of their parameters, especially amplitude and phase errors, which are usually not specified by MDAC manufacturers. This paper presents the results of investigations of voltage amplitude ratio errors and phase errors, as well as the time stability of voltage ratio and phase shift of selected commercial 16- and 18-bit MDACs. These parameters were measured with a dedicated high-resolution sampling system. The amplitude ratio and phase errors were determined as a function of the MDAC digital input word. Phase errors were also determined as a function of frequency.

Multichannel digital sinewave generators play a key role in digital automated impedance bridges. Along with the technological progress in the development of commercial data acquisition (DAQ) boards, which brings with it improvements in their metrological and functional properties, it is possible to realize the DAQ-based high-precision multichannel generators. This paper describes the evaluation of properties of three commercial DAQs, available in the form of PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation modules and working as two-channel generators supervised by software developed by the authors. Due to the fact that the main application area of these generators is digital impedance bridges, this paper presents research results the most relevant for the impedance bridges, i.e., the stability of amplitude ratio and phase difference as well as total harmonic distortion and spurious-free dynamic range. The results and conclusion presented in this paper may be useful when choosing DAQs intended to be used in the multichannel generators.

This study aimed at investigating the effects of 2, 4 and 8 weeks of endurance training on the contractile properties of slow (S), fast fatigue resistant (FR) and fast fatigable (FF) motor units (MUs) in rat medial gastrocnemius (MG) in relation to the changes in muscle mitochondrial biogenesis. The properties of functionally isolated MUs were examined in vivo. Mitochondrial biogenesis was judged based on the changes in mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA), the content of the electron transport chain (ETC) proteins and PGC-1α in the MG. Moreover, the markers of mitochondria remodeling mitofusins (Mfn1, Mfn2) and dynamin-like protein (Opa1) were studied using qPCR. A proportion of FR MUs increased from 37.9% to 50.8% and a proportion of FF units decreased from 44.7% to 26.6% after 8 weeks of training. The increased fatigue resistance, shortened twitch duration, and increased ability to potentiate force were found as early as after 2 weeks of endurance training, predominantly in FR MUs. Moreover, just after 2 weeks of the training an enhancement of the mitochondrial network remodeling was present as judged by an increase in expression of Mfn1, Opa1 and an increase in PGC-1α in the slow part of MG. Interestingly, no signs of intensification of mitochondrial biogenesis assessed by ETC proteins content and mtDNA in slow and fast parts of gastrocnemius were found at this stage of the training. Nevertheless, after 8 weeks of training an increase in the ETC protein content was observed, but mainly in the slow part of gastrocnemius. Concluding, the functional changes in MUs' contractile properties leading to the enhancement of muscle performance accompanied by an activation of signalling that controls the muscle mitochondrial network reorganisation and mitochondrial biogenesis belong to an early muscle adaptive responses that precede an increase in mitochondrial ETC protein content.

This paper presents a digital automatic unbalanced bridge designed for comparing the impedances of $R-R$ , $R-C$ , and $C-C$ . The measurement principle uses initial balancing of the bridge using two digital sine wave sources, then measuring the ratio of voltage drops on the compared impedances as well as the finite bridge unbalance voltage. The present method is novel because it is not necessary to obtain a complete voltage nulling and also because it is readily implemented with a commercial data acquisition (DAQ) card. An NI USB6281 DAQ card was used to obtain the results; this card combines the two 16-bit digital-to-analog converters with one multiplexed 18-bit analog-to-digital converter. Such a measurement system, which is relatively simple and inexpensive, can compare impedances with an error below 10 ppm. Some considerations concerning the relationship between the measurement accuracy of unbalanced voltage and the level of the bridge unbalance are given.

DEMETRA, the 'DEMonstrator of Egnss services based on Time Reference Architecture', is an European Project funded by the European Union in the Horizon 2020 program. The main aim of the project was to develop and test a prototype of Time Service Provider based the European Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) providing innovative or improved time services based on different technologies and embedded in a modular architecture. The main innovative features are time certification, non-repudiation, integrity, reliability, resilience. The demonstrator has been developed and tested during the years 2015-2016. Nine different time services were developed and tested also in real environment at users premises. The paper reports the results of the experimental campaigns and the main lesson learned also by the trials with potential users.

Innate lymphocyte cells (ILCs), a novel family of innate immune cells are considered to function as key orchestrators of immune defences at mucosal surfaces and to be crucial for maintaining an intact intestinal barrier. Accordingly, first data suggest depletion of ILCs to be involved in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated damage of the intestinal mucosa and subsequent microbial translocation. However, although ILCs are preferentially localized at mucosal surfaces, only little is known regarding distribution and function of ILCs in the human gastrointestinal tract. Here, we show that in HIV(-) individuals composition and functional capacity of intestinal ILCs is compartment-specific with group 1 ILCs representing the major fraction in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract, whereas ILC3 are the predominant population in ileum and colon, respectively. In addition, we present first data indicating that local cytokine concentrations, especially that of IL-7, might modulate composition of gut ILCs. Distribution of intestinal ILCs was significantly altered in HIV patients, who displayed decreased frequency of total ILCs in ileum and colon owing to reduced numbers of both CD127(+)ILC1 and ILC3. Of note, frequency of colonic ILC3 was inversely correlated with serum levels of I-FABP and sCD14, surrogate markers for loss of gut barrier integrity and microbial translocation, respectively. Both expression of the IL-7 receptor CD127 on ILCs as well as mucosal IL-7 mRNA levels were decreased in HIV(+) patients, especially in those parts of the GI tract with reduced ILC frequencies, suggesting that impaired IL-7 responses of ILCs might contribute to incomplete reconstitution of ILCs under effective anti-retroviral therapy. This is the first report comparing distribution and function of ILCs along the intestinal mucosa of the entire human gastrointestinal tract in HIV(+) and HIV(-) individuals., Author summary Current treatment regimens are very effective in blocking replication of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, due to ongoing activation of the immune system this often does not fully restore human health. The mechanisms underlying such activation of the immune system are only incompletely understood but are likely to include HIV-induced injury of the gut epithelial barrier and subsequent intrusion of gut flora components into the systemic circulation (microbial translocation). This study looks at the distribution and function of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in the gut mucosa of HIV(-) and HIV(+) patients as these cells are important for maintaining an intact gut epithelium. We found that composition of the intestinal ILC pool differs between the specific segments of the digestive tract and is significantly altered in HIV(+) patients. Furthermore, our data suggest a link between dys-regulated intestinal ILCs and loss of intestinal barrier function in HIV infection, thereby allowing for microbial translocation and systemic immune activation. This finding is new and highlights the important role played by the gut immune system in HIV-induced illness.

During 2015-2016, a European Consortium of 15 partners from 8 different countries, developed the DEMETRA (DEMonstrator of EGNSS services based on Time Reference Architecture), a project funded by the European Union in the frame of the Horizon 2020 program. This project aims at developing and experimenting time dissemination services dedicated to specific users like traffic control, energy distribution, finance, telecommunication, and scientific institutions. Nine services have been developed. These services provide time dissemination with accuracy levels from millisecond to the sub-ns, and also additional services like certification, calibration, or integrity. Five of these services are based on the European GNSS. After a development phase (see PTTI 2016 presentation) the full DEMETRA system has been working during six months for demonstration. The paper will report about the experimentation results, showing performances and limits of the proposed time dissemination services, aiming to foster the exploitation of the European GNSS for timing applications.

Absolute polymorphonuclear (PMN) counts in ascites define spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP), a severe form of bacterial infection in liver cirrhosis. Bacterascites, another form of ascites infection, can progress to SBP or may resolve spontaneously but is not reflected by absolute PMN counts. We investigated whether the relative ascites PMN count (the absolute PMN count divided by the absolute leukocyte count) provides additional information to detect bacterascites or predict SBP.Hospitalized patients with liver cirrhosis requiring paracentesis were stratified with respect to a diagnosis of bacterascites and SBP with a prospective follow-up for 1 year. Diagnostic power of relative PMN counts in ascites was evaluated by receiver operating characteristics curves.At inclusion, we observed 28/269 (10%) and 43/269 (16%) episodes of BA and SBP, respectively. Unlike absolute PMN counts, relative PMN counts in ascites were significantly elevated in bacterascites (p = 0.001). During follow-up, 16 and 30 further episodes of BA and SBP were detected, respectively. Relative PMN counts increased significantly once patients developed BA (p = 0.001). At a threshold of 0.20 for the relative PMN count, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values for bacterascites which required antibiotic treatment were 83, 75, 26 and 98%, respectively (p 0.001). Furthermore, a relative PMN count in ascites ≥0.13 and MELD score17 was independent factors associated with occurrence of SBP during follow-up.The relative PMN count is a cheap immunological marker linked to bacterascites and future SBP, which may help to stratify patients according to their risk of infection.

An integrity checking and recovery (ICAR) system is presented here, which protects file system integrity and automatically restores modified files. The system enables files cryptographic hashes generation and verification, as well as configuration of security constraints. All of the crucial data, including ICAR system binaries, file backups and hashes database are stored in a physically write-protected storage to eliminate the threat of unauthorised modification. A buffering mechanism was designed and implemented in the system to increase operation performance. Additionally, the system supplies user tools for cryptographic hash generation and security database management. The system is implemented as a kernel extension, compliant with the Linux security model. Experimental evaluation of the system was performed and showed an approximate 10% performance degradation in secured file access compared to regular access.

Four eastern cottonwood clones, including standard operational clone ST66 and three advanced clonal selections were produced and included in a test utilizing five different plant propagation methods. Despite relatively large first-year growth differences among clones, all clones demonstrated similar responses to the treatments and clone × cutting treatment interactions were generally non-significant. The effects of changing cutting lengths are consistent with previous studies which indicated the potential for increased plant survival and growth with increased cutting lengths. Differences in stored carbohydrate reserves alone do not appear to completely control first-year growth and development of cuttings. First-year growth of 51 cm long cuttings planted 30.5 cm deep was greater than the same cuttings planted 48 cm deep. Stem form of plants derived from whip-tip propagation did not differ from plants derived from standard, unrooted cuttings. This propagation method offers the potential of far greater production capacity from a cutting orchard and rapid bulk-up of new or limited clones. Stand uniformity assessments suggest that surviving trees of each individual cutting treatment exhibit similar levels of growth variation. Optimization of plantation establishment techniques has the potential to increase growth of young Populus plantations.
