- Abstract
Zintl-phase materials have attracted significant research interest owing to the interplay of magnetism and strong spin--orbit coupling, providing a prominent material platform for axion electrodynamics. Here, we report the single-crystal growth, structure, magnetic and electrical/thermal transport properties of the antiferromagnet layer Zintl-phase compound β-EuIn
2 As2 . Importantly, the new layered structure of β-EuIn2 As2 , in rhombohedral (R3m) symmetry, contains triangular layers of Eu2+ ions. The in-plane resistivity r(H, T) measurements reveal metal behavior with an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition (TN ~ 23.5 K), which is consistent with the heat capacity Cp (H, T) and magnetic susceptibilityΧ (H, T) measurements. Negative MR was observed in the temperature range from 2 K to 20 K with a maximum MR ratio of 0.06. Unique 4f7 J = S = 7/2 Eu2+ spins were supposed magnetically order along the c-axis. The Seebeck coefficient shows a maximum thermopower |Smax | of about 40 µV K-1 . The kink around 23 K in the Seebeck coefficient originates from the effect of the antiferromagnetic phase on the electron band structure, while the pronounced thermal conductivity peak at around 10 K is attributed to the phonon--phonon Umklapp scattering. The results suggest that the Eu2+ spin arrangement plays an important role in the magnetic, electrical, and thermal transport properties in β-EuIn2 As2 , which might be helpful for future potential technical applications. - Abstract
Background: Saturated fat (SFA), x-6 (n-6) polyunsaturated fat (PUFA), and trans fat (TFA) influence risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), but attributable CHD mortalities by country, age, sex, and time are unclear. Methods and Results: National intakes of SFA, n-6 PUFA, and TFA were estimated using a Bayesian hierarchical model based on country-specific dietary surveys; food availability data; and, for TFA, industry reports on fats/oils and packaged foods. Etiologic effects of dietary fats on CHD mortality were derived from meta-analyses of prospective cohorts and CHD mortality rates from the 2010 Global Burden of Diseases study. Absolute and proportional attributable CHD mortality were computed using a comparative risk assessment framework. In 2010, nonoptimal intakes of n-6 PUFA, SFA, and TFA were estimated to result in 711 800 (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 680 700-745 000), 250 900 (95% UI 236 900-265 800), and 537 200 (95% UI 517 600-557 000) CHD deaths per year worldwide, accounting for 10.3% (95% UI 9.9%-10.6%), 3.6%, (95% UI 3.5%-3.6%) and 7.7% (95% UI 7.6%-7.9%) of global CHD mortality. Tropical oil-consuming countries were estimated to have the highest proportional n-6 PUFA- and SFAattributable CHD mortality, whereas Egypt, Pakistan, and Canada were estimated to have the highest proportional TFA-attributable CHD mortality. From 1990 to 2010 globally, the estimated proportional CHD mortality decreased by 9% for insufficient n-6 PUFA and by 21% for higher SFA, whereas it increased by 4% for higher TFA, with the latter driven by increases in low- and middle-income countries. Conclusions: Nonoptimal intakes of n-6 PUFA, TFA, and SFA each contribute to significant estimated CHD mortality, with important heterogeneity across countries that informs nation-specific clinical, public health, and policy priorities. © 2016 The Authors.

- Abstract
Cisplatin resistance remains a major problem in the treatment of lung cancer. We have discovered that cisplatin resistant (CR) lung cancer cells, regardless of the signaling pathway status, share the common parameter which is an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and undergo metabolic reprogramming. CR cells were no longer addicted to the glycolytic pathway, but rather relied on oxidative metabolism. They took up twice as much glutamine and were highly sensitive to glutamine deprivation. Glutamine is hydrolyzed to glutamate for glutathione synthesis, an essential factor to abrogate high ROS via xCT antiporter. Thus, blocking glutamate flux using riluzole (an amyotropic lateral sclerosis approved drug) can selectively kill CR cells in vitro and in vivo. However, we discovered here that glutathione suppression is not the primary pathway in eradicating the CR cells. Riluzole can lead to further decrease in NAD(+) (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and lactate dehydrogenase-A (LDHA) expressions which in turn further heightened oxidative stress in CR cells. LDHA knocked-down cells became hypersensitive to riluzole treatments and possessed increased levels of ROS. Addition of NAD(+) re-stabilized LDHA and reversed riluzole induced cell death. Thus far, no drugs are available which could overcome cisplatin resistance or kill cisplatin resistant cells. CR cells possess high levels of ROS and undergo metabolic reprogramming. These metabolic adaptations can be exploited and targeted by riluzole. Riluzole may serve as a dual-targeting agent by suppression LDHA and blocking xCT antiporter. Repurposing of riluzole should be considered for future treatment of cisplatin resistant lung cancer patients., Department of Veterans Affairs, BLR&D Career Development Award-2; NIH/NCI; Woman Cancer Association of the University of Miami Award

- Abstract
The 95Zr(n, γ)96Zr reaction cross section is crucial in the modeling of s-process nucleosynthesis in asymptotic giant branch stars because it controls the operation of the branching point at the unstable 95Zr and the subsequent production of 96Zr. We have carried out the measurement of the 94Zr(18O, 16O) and 90Zr(18O, 16O) reactions and obtained the γ-decay probability ratio of 96Zr* and 92Zr* to determine the 95Zr(n, γ)96Zr reaction cross sections with the surrogate ratio method. Our deduced Maxwellian-averaged cross section of 66 ± 16 mb at 30 keV is close to the value recommended by Bao et al., but 30% and more than a factor of two larger than the values proposed by Toukan & Käppeler and Lugaro et al., respectively, and routinely used in s-process models. We tested the new rate in stellar models with masses between 2 and 6 M⊙ (Solar mass) and metallicities of 0.014 and 0.03. The largest changes—up to 80% variations in 96Zr—are seen in models of mass 3–4 M⊙, where the 22Ne neutron source is mildly activated. The new rate can still provide a match to data from meteoritic stardust silicon carbide grains, provided that the maximum mass of the parent stars is below 4 M⊙, for a metallicity of 0.03.

We observe D0-D? 0 mixing in the decay D0?K+? - using a data sample of integrated luminosity 976 fb-1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e +e- asymmetric-energy collider. We measure the mixing parameters x? 2=(0.090.22)10-3 and y?=(4.63.4)10-3 and the ratio of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favored decay rates RD=(3.530.13)10-3, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic combined. Our measurement excludes the no-mixing hypothesis at the 5.1 standard deviation level. 2014 American Physical Society.

- Abstract
We present a measurement of the branching fractions and charge-parity-(CP-)violating parameters in B??K decays. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772106 BB? pairs collected at the ?(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We obtain the branching fractions B(B0??K0)=(4.50.4(stat)0.3(syst))10-6, B(B+??K+)=(6.80.4(stat)0.4(syst))10-6 which are in agreement with their respective current world averages. For the CP-violating parameters, we obtain A?KS0=-0.360.19(stat)0. 05(syst),S?KS0=+0.910.32(stat)0.05(syst),A?K+=-0. 030.04(stat)0.01(syst), where A and S represent the direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetry, respectively. We find no evidence of CP violation in the decay channel B+??K+; however, we obtain the first evidence of CP violation in the B0??KS0 decay channel at the level of 3.1 standard deviations. 2014 American Physical Society.

- Abstract
Using data samples of 102106 (1S) and 158106 (2S) events collected with the Belle detector, a first experimental search has been made for double-charmonium production in the exclusive decays (1S,2S)?J/?(??)+X, where X=?c, ?cJ(J=0,1,2), ?c(2S), X(3940), and X(4160). No significant signal is observed in the spectra of the mass recoiling against the reconstructed J/? or ?? except for the evidence of ?c1 production with a significance of 4.6? for (1S)?J/?+?c1. The measured branching fraction B((1S)?J/?+?c1) is [3.901.21(stat)0.23(syst)]10-6. The 90% C.L. upper limits on the branching fractions of the other modes having a significance of less than 3? are determined. These results are consistent with theoretical calculations using the nonrelativistic QCD factorization approach. 2014 American Physical Society.

- Abstract
We report a search for charmless hadronic decays of neutral B mesons to ??K?(892)0. The results are based on a 711fb-1 data sample that contains 772106BB pairs, collected at the (4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e+e- collider. We observe the decay for the first time with a significance of 5.0 standard deviations and obtain its branching fraction B[B0???K?(892)0]=[2.60.7(stat)0.2(syst)]10-6. We also measure the CP-violating asymmetry as ACP[B0???K?(892)0]=-0.220.29(stat)0.07(syst). 2014 American Physical Society.

- Abstract
The relative γ -decay probability ratios of the neutron resonance states in 94Zr and 92Zr populated via two neutron transfer reactions, 92Zr(18O,16O)94Zr and 90Zr(18O,16O)92Zr, have been measured to test the validity of the surrogate ratio method (SRM) in determining the (n, γ ) reaction cross section. The cross sections of the 93Zr(n,γ )94Zr reaction are derived from the experimentally obtained ratios and the cross sections of the 91Zr(n,γ )92Zr reaction in the equivalent neutron energy range of En = 0–8MeV. The deduced cross sections of 93Zr(n,γ )94Zr reaction agree with the directly measured ones in the low-energy region, and with the evaluated ENDF/B-VII.1 data at higher energies of En > 3MeV. The agreement supports the concept of the SRM method to indirectly determine the (n,γ ) reaction cross sections.

- Abstract
In 2008 we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, research on this topic has continued to accelerate, and many new scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Accordingly, it is important to update these guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Various reviews have described the range of assays that have been used for this purpose. Nevertheless, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to measure autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. A key point that needs to be emphasized is that there is a difference between measurements that monitor the numbers or volume of autophagic elements (e.g., autophagosomes or autolysosomes) at any stage of the autophagic process vs. those that measure flux through the autophagy pathway (i.e., the complete process); thus, a block in macroautophagy that results in autophagosome accumulation needs to be differentiated from stimuli that result in increased autophagic activity, defined as increased autophagy induction coupled with increased delivery to, and degradation within, lysosomes (in most higher eukaryotes and some protists such as Dictyostelium) or the vacuole (in plants and fungi). In other words, it is especially important that investigators new to the field understand that the appearance of more autophagosomes does not necessarily equate with more autophagy. In fact, in many cases, autophagosomes accumulate because of a block in trafficking to lysosomes without a concomitant change in autophagosome biogenesis, whereas an increase in autolysosomes may reflect a reduction in degradative activity. Here, we present a set of guidelines for the selection and interpretation of methods for use by investigators who aim to examine macroautophagy and related processes, as well as for reviewers who need to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of papers that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a formulaic set of rules, because the appropriate assays depend in part on the question being asked and the system being used. In addition, we emphasize that no individual assay is guaranteed to be the most appropriate one in every situation, and we strongly recommend the use of multiple assays to monitor autophagy. In these guidelines, we consider these various methods of assessing autophagy and what information can, or cannot, be obtained from them. Finally, by discussing the merits and limits of particular autophagy assays, we hope to encourage technical innovation in the field. © 2012 Landes Bioscience.

- Abstract
Background Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), fruit juice, and milk are components of diet of major public health interest. To-date, assessment of their global distributions and health impacts has been limited by insufficient comparable and reliable data by country, age, and sex. Objective To quantify global, regional, and national levels of SSB, fruit juice, and milk intake by age and sex in adults over age 20 in 2010. Methods We identified, obtained, and assessed data on intakes of these beverages in adults, by age and sex, from 193 nationally- or subnationally-representative diet surveys worldwide, representing over half the world's population. We also extracted data relevant to milk, fruit juice, and SSB availability for 187 countries from annual food balance information collected by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. We developed a hierarchical Bayesian model to account for measurement incomparability, study representativeness, and sampling and modeling uncertainty, and to combine and harmonize nationally representative dietary survey data and food availability data. Results In 2010, global average intakes were 0.58 (95%UI: 0.37, 0.89) 8 oz servings/day for SSBs, 0.16 (0.10, 0.26) for fruit juice, and 0.57 (0.39, 0.83) for milk. There was significant heterogeneity in consumption of each beverage by region and age. Intakes of SSB were highest in the Caribbean (1.9 servings/day; 1.2, 3.0); fruit juice consumption was highest in Australia and New Zealand (0.66; 0.35, 1.13); and milk intake was highest in Central Latin America and parts of Europe (1.06; 0.68, 1.59). Intakes of all three beverages were lowest in East Asia and Oceania. Globally and within regions, SSB consumption was highest in younger adults; fruit juice consumption showed little relation with age; and milk intakes were highest in older adults. Conclusions Our analysis highlights the enormous spectrum of beverage intakes worldwide, by country, age, and sex. These data are valu

- Abstract
The influence of second-generation products on the particle mass yield of β-caryophyllene ozonolysis was systematically tested and quantified. The approach was to vary the relative concentrations of first- and second-generation products by controlling ozone concentration, while observing the change in particle mass yield. For all organic particle mass concentrations M
org of this study (0.5 < Morg < 230 µgm-3 ), the data show that particle-phase organic material was in large part composed of second-generation products. For 0.5 < Morg < 10 µg m-3 , a range which overlaps with atmospheric concentrations, the particle mass yield was not sensitive to ozone exposure, implying that the constituent molecules were rapidly produced at all investigated ozone exposures. In contrast, for Morg > 10 µg m-3 the particle mass yield increased with ozone exposure. These different dependencies on ozone exposure with Morg are explained by a combination of the ozonolysis lifetimes of the first- generation products and the volatility distribution of the resulting second-generation products. First-generation products that have short lifetimes produce low-volatility second-generation products whereas first-generation products that have long lifetimes produce high-volatility second-generation products. The ultimate particle mass yield was defined by mass-based stoichiometric yields α0 = 0.17 ± 0.05, α1 = 0.11 ± 0.17, and α2 = 1.03 ± 0.30 for corresponding saturation concentrations of 1, 10, and 100 µg m-3 . Terms α0 and α1 had low sensitivity to the investigated range of ozone exposure whereas term α2 increased from 0.32 ± 0.13 to 1.03 ± 0.30 as the ozone exposure was increased. These findings potentially allow for simplified yet nevertheless accurate parameterizations in air quality and climate models that seek to represent the ozonolysis particle mass yield of certain classes of biogenic compounds. Feed efficiency (FE) is critical in pig production, as feed accounts for more than 70% of production costs. Improving FE would increase profit while also reduce impact on environment of pig production. To evaluate the differences of serum metabolites in Duroc breeding pig with different feed efficiency, serum samples were collected and analyzed with untargeted metabolomics by using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with a Q-Exactive hybrid quadrupole-Orbitrap mass. There were 3,817 peaks identified from the serum samples. The differential analysis of metabolites showed differences between high/low efficiency feed group. L-Isoleucine, β-Muricholic acid, 2-Hydroxyhippuric acid, Methoxyphenylacetic acid, 1-Vinylimidazole, Caprolactam, and ent-8-iso Prostaglandin F2α were significant compounds from the high efficiency feed group, while DL-α-Aminocaprylic acid, Creatine, Citric acid, and 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-tetranor Prostaglandin D2 were significant compounds from the low efficiency feed group. However, most peaks were still not identified. The further identification is expected to help find more factors affecting the feed efficiency high or low. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The compositions of metabolites can be regarded as the biochemical fingerprints of biological reactions. They could be used to trace the possible metabolic pathways and evaluate the physiological requirement of organism. The serum samples were collected from black pig. Untargeted metabolomics analysis was performed using an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with a Q-Exactive hybrid quadrupole-Orbitrap mass. There were 3,082 peaks identified from the serum samples. The differential analysis of metabolites showed differences between high/low weight group. 6-Methoxyquinoline, 4-Hydroxymandelic acid, 2,2',4,4'-Tetrahydroxybenzophenone, Serotonin, trans-4-Hydroxy-L-proline, DL-Tryptophan, 2-[(1S) -1-Hydroxyethyl]-4 (1H) -quinazolinone, (+/-) 9-HpODE were significant compounds from the high weight group, while Bis (4-ethylbenzylidene) sorbitol and Decanoylcarnitine were significant compounds from the low weight group. - Abstract
Different dispersants were added in the dispersion process to improve the efficiency of fluorite flotation. The types and dosage of dispersant on the improvement of fluorite flotation were investigated; when the sodium polyacrylate (SPA) was used as the dispersant and its addition is 0.5%, the concentrate grade of CaF2 increased from 90% to 98% and the fluorite recovery increased from 81% to 85%. Methods of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) were used to characterize the sample. According to the analysis of results, the optimal sample consisted of CaF2 and very little CaCO3 in the size range of 0–5 μm. It could be concluded that the mechanism of improvement for the concentrate grade and recovery of CaF2 was attributed to the change of potential energy barrier which caused the separation of particles with different charge. All results indicate that SPA has a great potential to be an efficient and cost-effective dispersant for the improvement of fluorite flotation.
