1. A double-station meteor camera set-up in the Canary Islands – CILBO

Abstract: This paper describes a double-station camera set-up in the Canary Islands, called CILBO (Canary Island Long-Baseline Observatory). Image-intensified video cameras – one camera on Tenerife and one on La Palma – monitor the same volume of the atmosphere. They are located in automated roll-off roofs. From the obtained data, the meteoroid trajectory can be computed. A second camera on Tenerife is equipped with an objective grating. For bright meteors (typically 0 mag or brighter), a spectrum is recorded which allows constraining the chemical composition of the meteor. The system is completely automated and sends the obtained data after every observation night to a central FTP server. It has been in operation for about 2 yr and the first scientific results have been produced.

Abstract: The discovery of almost 2000 exoplanets has revealed an unexpectedly diverse planet population. Observations to date have shown that our Solar System is certainly not representative of the general population of planets in our Milky Way. The key science questions that urgently need addressing are therefore: What are exoplanets made of? Why are planets as they are? What causes the exceptional diversity observed as compared to the Solar System? EChO (Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory) has been designed as a dedicated survey mission for transit and eclipse spectroscopy capable of observing a large and diverse planet sample within its four-year mission lifetime. EChO can target the atmospheres of super-Earths, Neptune-like, and Jupiter-like planets, in the very hot to temperate zones (planet temperatures of 300K-3000K) of F to M-type host stars. Over the next ten years, several new ground- and space-based transit surveys will come on-line (e.g. NGTS, CHEOPS, TESS, PLATO), which will specifically focus on finding bright, nearby systems. The current rapid rate of discovery would allow the target list to be further optimised in the years prior to EChO's launch and enable the atmospheric characterisation of hundreds of planets. Placing the satellite at L2 provides a cold and stable thermal environment, as well as a large field of regard to allow efficient time-critical observation of targets randomly distributed over the sky. A 1m class telescope is sufficiently large to achieve the necessary spectro-photometric precision. The spectral coverage (0.5-11 micron, goal 16 micron) and SNR to be achieved by EChO, thanks to its high stability and dedicated design, would enable a very accurate measurement of the atmospheric composition and structure of hundreds of exoplanets., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures. 3. Mineralogical analysis of 14 PHAs from ViNOS data

Abstract: Potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs) are objects that can have close encounters with Earth and are significantly large to cause significant regional damage in the event of impact. The mitigation strategy requires to understand their physical properties. We aim to investigate the physical nature of PHAs, using data obtained within the framework of the Visible NEOs Observations Survey (ViNOS). We analysed and characterized a sample comprised of 14 of these objects. To conduct this study, we obtained visible spectra of 14 PHAs in the 0.5–0.9-μm region using the 2.5 m Nordic Optical Telescope, located at the El Roque De Los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma (Spain). The resulting spectra were combined with their corresponding near-infrared counterparts, available in the literature from the Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey (SMASS). We performed a taxonomical classification, computed several diagnostic spectral parameters (slopes, band centres, and band area ratios), and provide completely new mineralogical information for 10 of these objects. We also compared the data with laboratory spectra of meteorites from the RELAB data base. Among the studied sample of PHAs, approximately 90 per cent of the objects (13 out of 14) were classified as silicaceous (S-types and subclasses). Only one object, 489 486, was classified as carbonaceous. Five of the studied PHAs did not have previous taxonomic classifications. The comparisons of the silicaceous PHAs with meteoritic spectra yielded, in all cases, ordinary chondrites as the best match for meteoritic analogues. The computed mineralogy of all of our targets is also consistent with this results.

5. Exogenic Basalt on Asteroid (101955) Bennu

Abstract: When rubble-pile asteroid 2008 TC3 impacted Earth on October 7, 2008, the recovered rock fragments indicated that such asteroids can contain exogenic material. However, spacecraft missions to date have only observed exogenous contamination on large, monolithic asteroids that are impervious to collisional disruption. Here we report the presence of meter-scale exogenic boulders on the surface of near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu - the 0.5-km, rubble-pile target of the OSIRIS-REx mission which has been spectroscopically linked to the CM carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. Hyperspectral data indicate that the exogenic boulders have the same distinctive pyroxene composition as the howardite-eucrite-diogenite (HED) meteorites that come from (4) Vesta, a 525-km diameter asteroid that has undergone differentiation and extensive igneous processing. Delivery scenarios include the infall of Vesta fragments directly onto Bennu or indirectly onto Bennu’s parent body, where the latter’s disruption created Bennu from a mixture of endogenous and exogenic debris. Our findings demonstrate that rubble-pile asteroids can preserve evidence of inter-asteroid mixing that took place at macroscopic scales well after planetesimal formation ended. Accordingly, the presence of HED-like material on the surface of Bennu provides previously unrecognized constraints on the collisional and dynamical evolution of the inner main belt.

6. Characterisation of the new target of the NASA Lucy mission: asteroid 152830 Dinkinesh (1999 VD57)

Abstract: The NASA Lucy mission is aimed at the study of the very interesting population of Jupiter Trojans, considered as time capsules from the origin of our solar system. During its journey, the mission will pass near a main belt asteroid, Donaldjohanson. Recently, NASA has announced that a new asteroid in the belt will also be visited by Lucy: 152830 Dinkinesh (1999 VD57). The main goal of this work is to characterise this newly selected target, asteroid Dinkinesh, in order to provide critical information to the mission team. To achieve it, we have obtained visible spectra, colour photometry, and time-series photometry of Dinkinesh, using several telescopes located at different observatories. For the spectra we used the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), in the island of La Palma (Spain); for the colour photometry the 4.3m Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT), near Happy Jack, Arizona (USA) was used; and for the time-series photometry we used the 82cm IAC80 telescope located in the island of Tenerife (Spain). Both visible spectrum and reflectance values computed from colour photometry show that Dinkinesh is an S-type asteroid, i.e., it is composed mainly of silicates and some metal. According to observations done by the NEOWISE survey, S-type asteroids have typical geometric albedo of $p_V$ = 0.223 $\pm$ 0.073. From our time-series photometry, we obtained an asteroid mean magnitude $r'$ = 19.99 $\pm$ 0.05, which provides an absolute magnitude $H_{r'}$ = 17.53 $\pm$ 0.07 assuming $G$ = 0.19 $\pm$ 0.25 for S-types. Using our colour-photometry, we transformed $H_{r'}$ to $H_V$ = 17.48 $\pm$ 0.05. This value of absolute magnitude combined with the geometric albedo provides a mean diameter for Dinkinesh of $\sim$900 m, ranging between a minimum size of 542 m and a maximum size of 1309 m., 4 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

7. Asteroids' reflectance from Gaia DR3: Artificial reddening at near-UV wavelengths

Abstract: Aims. We aim to assess the suitability in the near-ultraviolet (NUV) region of the solar analogues selected by the team responsible for the asteroid reflectance included in Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) and to suggest a correction (in the form of multiplicative factors) to be applied to the Gaia DR3 asteroid reflectance spectra to account for the differences with respect to the solar analogue Hyades 64. Results. We find that the solar analogues selected for Gaia DR3 to compute the reflectance spectra of the asteroids of this data release have a systematically redder spectral slope at wavelengths shorter than 0.55 {\mu}m than Hyades 64. We find that no correction is needed in the red photometer (RP, between 0.7 and 1 {\mu}m), but a correction should be applied at wavelengths below 0.55 {\mu}m, that is in the blue photometer (BP). After applying the correction, we find a better agreement between Gaia DR3 spectra, ECAS, HST, and our set of ground-based observations with the TNG. Conclusions. Correcting the near-UV part of the asteroid reflectance spectra is very important for proper comparisons with laboratory spectra (minerals, meteorite samples, etc.) or to analyse quantitatively the UV absorption (which is particularly important to study hydration in primitive asteroids). The spectral behaviour at wavelengths below 0.5 {\mu}m of the selected solar analogues should be fully studied and taken into account for Gaia DR4, Comment: 5 pages plus appendix. Abstract: NASA’S Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft recently arrived at the near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu, a primitive body that represents the objects that may have brought prebiotic molecules and volatiles such as water to Earth1. Bennu is a low-albedo B-type asteroid2 that has been linked to organic-rich hydrated carbonaceous chondrites3. Such meteorites are altered by ejection from their parent body and contaminated by atmospheric entry and terrestrial microbes. Therefore, the primary mission objective is to return a sample of Bennu to Earth that is pristine—that is, not affected by these processes4. The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft carries a sophisticated suite of instruments to characterize Bennu’s global properties, support the selection of a sampling site and document that site at a sub-centimetre scale5,6,7,8,9,10,11. Here we consider early OSIRIS-REx observations of Bennu to understand how the asteroid’s properties compare to pre-encounter expectations and to assess the prospects for sample return. The bulk composition of Bennu appears to be hydrated and volatile-rich, as expected. However, in contrast to pre-encounter modelling of Bennu’s thermal inertia12 and radar polarization ratios13—which indicated a generally smooth surface covered by centimetre-scale particles—resolved imaging reveals an unexpected surficial diversity. The albedo, texture, particle size and roughness are beyond the spacecraft design specifications. On the basis of our pre-encounter knowledge, we developed a sampling strategy to target 50-metre-diameter patches of loose regolith with grain sizes smaller than two centimetres4. We observe only a small number of apparently hazard-free regions, of the order of 5 to 20 metres in extent, the sampling of which poses a substantial challenge to mission success.

Abstract: During its approach to asteroid (101955) Bennu, NASA’s Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identiﬁcation, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft surveyed Bennu’s immediate environment, photometric properties, and rotation state. Discovery of a dusty environment, a natural satellite, or unexpected asteroid characteristics would have had consequences for the mission’s safety and observation strategy. Here we show that spacecraft observations during this period were highly sensitive to satellites (sub-meter scale) but reveal none, although later navigational images indicate that further investigation is needed. We constrain average dust production in September 2018 from Bennu’s surface to an upper limit of 150 g/s averaged over 34 min. Bennu’s disk-integrated photometric phase function validates measurements from the pre-encounter astronomical campaign. We demonstrate that Bennu’s rotation rate is accelerating continuously at 3.63 ± 0.52 × 10^(–6) degrees/sq. day, likely due to the Yarkovsky–O’Keefe–Radzievskii–Paddack (YORP) effect, with evolutionary implications.

Abstract: This is the fourth data paper publishing lightcurve survey work of 52 Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs) using 10 telescopes available to the EURONEAR network between 2017 and 2020. Forty six targets were not observed before our runs (88% of the sample) but some of these were targeted during the same oppositions mainly by Brian Warner. We propose new periods for 20 targets (38% of the sample), confirming published data for 20 targets, while our results for 8 targets do not match published data. We secured periods for 15 targets (29% of the sample), candidate periods for 23 objects (44%), tentative periods for 11 asteroids (21%), and have derived basic information about 3 targets (6% of the sample). We calculated the lower limit of the ellipsoid shape ratios a/b for 46 NEAs (including 13 PHAs). We confirmed or suggested 4 binary objects, recommending two of them for follow-up during future dedicated campaigns. © Crown 2022., The Isaac Newton Telescope is operated on the island of La Palma by the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes in the Spanish Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. 11. Near-ultraviolet absorption distribution of primitive asteroids from spectrophotometric surveys

Abstract: Context. Hydrated minerals, such as phyllosilicates, on asteroids can provide constraints on the temperature or compositional distribution of the early Solar System. Previous studies pointed out the possibility that absorption in the near-ultraviolet (NUV, 0.35–0.5 μm) wavelength region is a proxy for hydrated minerals in primitive asteroids. However, the radial distribution of the NUV absorption among primitive asteroids was not revisited after the Eight Color Asteroid Survey (ECAS). Aims. Our objectives are first to evaluate the possibility of using the NUV absorption as diagnostics of hydrated minerals based on the recent datasets of primitive asteroids and hydrated carbonaceous chondrites, and second to investigate the reflectance spectrophotometry of the primitive asteroids in the NUV as functions of heliocentric distance and size. Methods. The NUV and visible reflectance spectrophotometry of more than 9000 primitive asteroids was investigated using two spectrophotometric surveys, ECAS and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), which cover wavelengths down to 0.32 μm and 0.36 μm, respectively. We classified asteroids from the main asteroid belt, the Cybele and Hilda zones, and Jupiter Trojans based on Tholen’s taxonomy and described the statistical distribution of primitive asteroid types. We also examined the relationship of the NUV, 0.7 μm, and 2.7 μm absorptions among primitive asteroids and hydrous carbonaceous chondrites CI and CM. Results. We find strong correlations between the NUV and the OH-band (2.7 μm) absorptions for primitive asteroids and hydrated meteorites, suggesting the NUV absorption can be indicative of hydrated silicates. Moreover, there is a great difference in the NUV absorption between the large asteroids (diameter d > 50 km) and small asteroids (d < 10 km) in the taxonomic distribution. The taxonomic distribution of asteroids differs between the inner main belt and middle-outer main belt. Notably, the C types are dominating large members through the main belt and the F types are dominating small asteroids of the inner main belt. The asteroids beyond the main belt consist mostly of P and D types, although P types are common everywhere in the main belt. The peculiar distribution of F types might indicate a different formation reservoir or a displacement process of F types in the early Solar System. The strongest absorptions of the NUV and 0.7 μm band were observed in G types, which likely comprise CM-like Fe-rich phyllosilicates. On the other hand, according to a recent sample return from an F-type asteroid (162173) Ryugu, the F types with the OH-band at 2.7 μm and the shallow NUV absorption could comprise CI-like Mg-rich phyllosilicates.

12. Physical and dynamical characterization of hyperbolic comet C/2017 U7(PANSTARRS)

Abstract: We present here a dynamical and observational study of the comet C/2017 U7 (PANSTARRS). This comet was discovered in 2017 and found to have a hyperbolic orbit. Our dynamical analysis shows that the object has probably originated in the Oort cloud, however an interstellar origin cannot be discarded. The observations were obtained in 2018 and 2019 using the Goodman High Throughput Spectrograph (GHTS) at the SOAR telescope. We obtained visible spectra covering the wavelength range of and also images in the SDSS filters system. Both the low-resolution reflectance spectrum and the reflectance spectra derived from the SDSS filters show an atypical band at . We conducted a comparative study of the colors and reflectance spectra of different small body populations (e.g., comets, Centaurs, and trans-Neptunian objects or TNOs) from the literature and concluded that the spectra and the colors of this comet are atypical, showing only some overlap with those of some known members of the TNOs and Centaurs, within the large uncertainties of the measurements of those populations. It is found that the feature and overall spectral shape can be reproduced by laboratory spectra of kerite, a template for aliphatic-rich hydrocarbons that has been previously identified in NIR cometary spectra absorptions. It is tentatively proposed that the unusual spectral shape is the result of a particle size distribution of dust grains in the coma or on the surface that has arisen due to a low grain ejection velocity from the surface and large nucleus size.

14. Near-ultraviolet to visible spectroscopy of the Themis and Polana-Eulalia complex families

Abstract: Aims. The aim of our study is to obtain the near-ultraviolet to visible (NUV-VIS, 0.35 - 0.95 micron) reflectance spectra of primitive asteroids with a focus on members of the Themis and Polana-Eulalia complex families. This characterization allows us to discuss the origin of two recent sample return mission target asteroids, (162173) Ryugu and (101955) Bennu. Methods. We obtain low-resolution visible spectra of target asteroids down to 0.35 micron using the telescopes located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory and revisit spectroscopic data that have already been published. We study the characteristics of the NUV-VIS reflectance spectra of primitive asteroids, focusing on data of the Themis family and the Polana-Eulalia family complex. Finally, we compare the NUV characteristics of these families with (162173) Ryugu and (101955) Bennu. In this work, we also study systematic effects due to the use of the five commonly used stars in Landolt's catalog as solar analogs to obtain the asteroid reflectance in the NUV wavelength range. We compare the spectra of five G-stars in Landolt's catalog with the spectrum of the well-studied solar analog Hyades 64, also observed on the same nights. Results. We find that many widely used Landolt's G-type stars are not solar analogs in the NUV wavelength spectral region and thus are not suitable for obtaining the reflectance spectra of asteroids. We also find that, even though the Themis family and the Polana-Eulalia family complex show a similar blueness at visible wavelengths, the NUV absorption of the Themis family is much deeper than that of the Polana-Eulalia family complex. We did not find significant differences between the New Polana and Eulalia families in terms of the NUV-VIS slope. 15. (20882) 2000 VH57: AN INNER MAIN-BELT BINARY ASTEROID

Abstract: CCD photometric observations of the inner main-belt asteroid (20882) 2000 VH57 were made from 2018 Sept. 15 through Oct. 20. Analysis of the data showed that the asteroid is binary with a primary rotational period of 2.5586 hr and a satellite orbital period of 32.81 hr. Mutual eclipse/occultation events indicate a lower limit on the secondary-to-primary mean diameter ratio (Ds/Dp) of 0.23. During the period of observations, the primary and secondary lightcurves evolved as the viewing aspect changed. In particular, the depth of the secondary event increased significantly towards the end of the observations.

Abstract: Context. Asteroid (6478) Gault was discovered to exhibit a comet-like tail in observations from December 2018, becoming a new member of the so-called active asteroid population in the main asteroid belt. Aims. We seek to investigate the grain properties of the dust ejected from asteroid (6478) Gault and to give insight into the activity mechanism(s). Methods. We use a Monte Carlo dust tail brightness code to retrieve the dates of dust ejection, the physical properties of the grains, and the total dust mass losses during each event. The code takes into account the brightness contribution of the asteroid itself. The model is applied to a large data set of images spanning the period from 2019 January 11 to 2019 March 13. In addition, we carried out both short- and long-term photometric measurements of the asteroid. Results. It is shown that, to date, asteroid (6478) Gault has experienced two episodes of impulsive dust ejection, which took place around 2018 November 5 and 2019 January 2. These two episodes released at least 1.4 × 10 7 kg and 1.6 × 10 6 kg of dust, respectively, at escape speeds. The size distribution, consisting of particles in the 1 μm-1 cm radius range, follows a broken power law with bending points near 15 μm and 870 μm. On the other hand, the photometric series indicate a nearly constant magnitude over several 5-7.3 h periods, which is a possible effect of the masking of a rotational light curve by the dust. Conclusions. The dust particles forming Gault's tails were released from the asteroid at escape speeds, but the specific ejection mechanism is unclear until photometry of the dust-free asteroid are conducted to assess whether this was related to rotational disruption or to other possible causes. © ESO 2019., We would like to thank the reviewer for his/her constructive comments which helped to substantially improve the quality of the paper. Abstract: EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25th of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Abstract: Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very important astrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highest energies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of the longitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples.

Abstract: We present observations and dust tail models of activated asteroid P/2015 X6 from deep imaging data acquired at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) from 2015 mid-December to 2016 late January. The results of the modeling indicate that the asteroid has undergone sustained dust loss over a period of two months or longer. The dust parameters, derived from multidimensional fits of the available images, are compatible with either ice sublimation or rotational instability processes. An impulsive event, as might be associated with an impact with another body, is less likely. A power-law distribution of particles, with minimum and maximum radii of 1 mu m and 1 cm and a power index of -3.3, is found to be consistent with the observations. Depending on the model of ejection velocity adopted, the particle velocities are found to be in the range of 0.3-10 m s(-1). The activation time was between 18 and 26 days before discovery. The total mass ejected from that time to the most recent observation is in the range 5-9 x 10(6) kg. Abstract: Meteor and fireball observations are key to the derivation of both the inventory and physical characterization of small solar system bodies orbiting in the vicinity of the Earth. For several decades, observation of these phenomena has only been possible via ground-based instruments. The proposed JEM-EUSO mission has the potential to become the first operational space-based platform to share this capability. In comparison to the observation of extremely energetic cosmic ray events, which is the primary objective of JEM-EUSO, meteor phenomena are very slow, since their typical speeds are of the order of a few tens of km/sec (whereas cosmic rays travel at light speed). The observing strategy developed to detect meteors may also be applied to the detection of nuclearites, which have higher velocities, a wider range of possible trajectories, but move well below the speed of light and can therefore be considered as slow events for JEM-EUSO. Abstract: An Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) is mandatory and a key element of a space-based mission which aims to detect Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR). JEM-EUSO has a dedicated atmospheric monitoring system that plays a fundamental role in our understanding of the atmospheric conditions in the Field of View (FoV) of the telescope. Our AMS consists of an infrared camera and a LIDAR device that are being fully designed with space qualification to fulfil the scientific requirements of this space mission. This AMS will provide information of the cloud cover in the FoV of JEM-EUSO, as well as measurements of the cloud top altitudes with an accuracy of 500 m and the optical depth profile of the atmosphere transmittance in the direction of each air shower with an accuracy of 0.15 degree and a resolution of 500 m. This will ensure that the energy of the primary UHECR and the depth of maximum development of the EAS (Extensive Air Shower) are measured with an accuracy better than 30% and 120 g/cm2, for EAS occurring either in the clear sky or with the EAS depth of maximum development above optically thick cloud layers. Moreover novel stereoscopic and radiometric retrieval techniques are under development to infer the Cloud Top Height (CTH) from the brightness temperature patterns obtained from the infrared camera.

Abstract: We are conducting tests of optical and electronics components of JEM-EUSO at the Telescope Array site in Utah with a ground-based "EUSO-TA" detector. The tests will include an engineering validation of the detector, cross-calibration of EUSO-TA with the TA fluorescence detector and observations of air shower events. Also, the proximity of the TA?s Electron Light Source will allow for convenient use of this calibration device. In this paper, we report initial results obtained with the EUSO-TA telescope. Abstract: Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very importantastrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highestenergies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of thelongitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples. Abstract: In this paper we describe the main characteristics of the JEM-EUSO instrument. The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO) of the International Space Station (ISS) will observe Ultra High-Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) from space. It will detect UV-light of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) produced by UHECRs traversing the Earth?s atmosphere. For each event, the detector will determine the energy, arrival direction and the type of the primary particle. The advantage of a space-borne detector resides in the largefield of view, using a target volume of about 10 12 tons of atmosphere, far greater than what is achievable from ground. Another advantage is a nearly uniform sampling of the whole celestial sphere. The corresponding increase in statistics will help to clarify the origin and sources of UHECRs and characterize the environment traversed during their production and propagation. JEM-EUSO is a 1.1 ton refractor telescope using an optics of 2.5 m diameter Fresnel lenses to focus the UV-light from EAS on a focal surface composed of about 5000 multi-anode photomultipliers, for a total of 3x10^5 channels. A multi-layer parallel architecture handles front-end acquisition, selecting and storing valid triggers. Each processing level filters the events with increasingly complex algorithms using FPGAs and DSPs to reject spurious events and reduce thedata rate to a value compatible with downlink constraints. Abstract: JEM-EUSO telescope on International Space Station will detect UV fluorescence emission from Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) induced Extensive Air Showers (EAS) penetrating in the atmosphere. The accuracy of reconstruction of the properties of the primary UHECR particles from the measurements of UV light depends on the extinction and scattering properties of the atmosphere at the location of the EAS and between the EAS and JEM-EUSO. The Atmospheric Monitoring system of JEM-EUSO will use the LIDAR, operating in the UV band, and an infrared camera to detect cloud and aerosol layer features across the entire 60? field of view of JEM-EUSO telescope, to measure the cloud top altitudes with the accuracy of 500 m and the optical depth profile of the atmosphere in the direction of each EAS with the accuracy 0.15 and resolution of 500 m. This should ensure that the energy of the primary UHECR particles and the depth of EAS maxima are measured with the accuracy better than 30% and 120 g/cm2, respectively.

27. Modeling the photometric and dynamical behavior of Super-Schmidt meteors in the Earth's atmosphere

Abstract: Faint meteors observed with Super-Schmidt cameras are re-examined in order to assess whether their dynamical and photometric behavior can be described by means of the single body theory. Velocities, decelerations and magnitudes are tted simultaneously to synthetic curves resulting from integration of the appropriate set of dierential equations. The parameters determined by this procedure are the ablation coecient, the shape-density coecient and the preatmospheric mass of each individual meteoroid. It turns out that 73% of the meteors analyzed here (with magnitudes in the range from +2.5 to 5) are reasonably well described by this theory, suggesting that they did not undergo signicant fragmentation during their atmospheric flight. Nevertheless, we identify some systematic dierences between observed and theoretical light curves of meteors for which the t is good. Meteoroid bulk densities are estimated from the retrieved shape-density coecients. The distributions of individual values are broad, indicating that objects of dierent densities coexist within the same meteoroid population. The average density is found to be 2400, 1400, and 400 kg m 3 for A-type, B-type and C-type meteoroids, respectively. These results do not conrm the large values determined from quasicontinuous fragmentation models.

Abstract: After the early observations of the disrupted asteroid P/2016 G1 with the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), and the modeling of the dust ejecta, we have performed a follow-up observational campaign of this object using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) during two epochs (June 28 and July 11, 2016). The analysis of these HST images with the same model inputs obtained from the GTC images revealed a good consistency with the predicted evolution from the GTC images, so that the model is applicable to the whole observational period from late April to early July 2016. This result confirms that the resulting dust ejecta was caused by a relatively short-duration event with onset about 350 days before perihelion, and spanning about 30 days (HWHM). For a size distribution of particles with a geometric albedo of 0.15, having radii limits of 1 $\mu$m and 1 cm, and following a power-law with index --3.0, the total dust mass ejected is $\sim$2$\times$10$^7$ kg. As was the case with the GTC observations, no condensations in the images that could be attributed to a nucleus or fragments released after the disruption event were found. Abstract: We present observations and models of the dust environment of activated asteroid P/2013 P5 (PANSTARRS). The object displayed a complex morphology during the observations, with the presence of multiple tails. We combined our own observations, all made with instrumentation attached to the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) on La Palma, with previously published Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images to build a model aimed at fitting all the observations. Altogether, the data cover a full 3-month period of observations which can be explained by an intermittent dust loss. The most plausible scenario is that of an asteroid rotating with the spinning axis oriented perpendicular to the orbit plane and loosing mass from the equatorial region, consistent with a rotational break-up. Assuming that the ejection velocity of the particles (v$\sim$0.02-0.05 m s$^{-1}$) corresponds to the escape velocity, the object diameter is constrained to $\sim$30-130 m for bulk densities 3000 to 1000 kg m$^{-3}$., Accepted by ApJ

30. A double-station meteor camera setup in the Canary Islands – CILBO

Abstract: Meteors are caused by dust particles in the solar system which enter the Earth's atmosphere. Using double-station camera setups, the precise trajectory of these dust particles can be determined. The initial heliocentric orbits of the dust can be derived and valuable information about their distribution, velocities, and composition can be determined. This paper describes a double-station camera setup in the Canary Islands, called CILBO (Canary Island Long-Baseline Observatory). It makes use of automated roll-off roofs to house one camera on Tenerife, one on La Palma, monitoring the same volume of the atmosphere. From the obtained data, the meteoroid trajectory can be computed. A second camera on Tenerife is equipped with an objective grating. For bright meteors, a spectrum is recorded which allows to constrain the chemical composition of the meteor. The system is completely automated and sends the obtained data after every observing night to a central ftp server. It has been in operation for almost two years and the first scientific results are produced.

Abstract: Main-Belt Comet P/2012 T1 (PANSTARRS) has been imaged using the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope (WHT) at six epochs in the period from November 2012 to February 2013, with the aim of monitoring its dust environment. The dust tails brightness and morphology are best interpreted in terms of a model of sustained dust emission spanning 4 to 6 months. The total dust mass ejected is estimated at $\sim$6--25$\times10^6$ kg. We assume a time-independent power-law size distribution function, with particles in the micrometer to centimeter size range. Based on the quality of the fits to the isophote fields, an anisotropic emission pattern is favored against an isotropic one, in which the particle ejection is concentrated toward high latitudes ($\pm45^\circ$ to $\pm90^\circ$) in a high obliquity object ($I$=80$^\circ$). This seasonally-driven ejection behavior, along with the modeled particle ejection velocities, are in remarkable agreement to those we found for P/2010 R2 (La Sagra) \citep{Moreno11a}., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Assuming a short-duration event scenario, as suggested by the quick vanishing of the dust tail brightness with time, and numerically integrating the equation of motion of individual particles ejected from the surface, we have developed a tail model from which we estimate the parameters associated with the geometry of the ejection, the size distribution, and the velocity distribution of the ejected particles, as well as the total mass ejected. We found a weak inverse power-law dependence of ejection velocity versus particle radius, with velocities ranging from 50 to 80 m s–1 for particle radii in the range from 5 cm to 8 × 10–5 cm, respectively. These velocities are very different from those expected from ice sublimation at the asteroid heliocentric distance (~3 AU) and suggest a collision scenario as a likely cause of the outburst. We found that the ejected particles are distributed in size following a power law of index -3, and, based on the ejecta mass and scaling laws, the impactor size is estimated at 30-90 m in radius, assuming an impact velocity of ~5 km s–1, and the same density (1500 kg m–3) for the asteroid as for the projectile. We have inferred an asymmetry in the ejecta along the axis normal to the asteroid orbit plane, a likely indicator of an oblique impact. The impact is estimated to have occurred on November 27, with an accuracy not better than ±3 days.

Abstract: The dust ejecta of Main-Belt Comet P/2010 A2 (LINEAR) have been observed with several telescopes at the at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on La Palma, Spain. Application of an inverse dust tail Monte Carlo method to the images of the dust ejecta from the object indicates that a sustained, likely water-ice driven, activity over some eight months is the mechanism responsible for the formation of the observed tail. The total amount of dust released is estimated to be 5E7 kg, which represents about 0.3% of the nucleus mass. Abstract: We present multiwavelength (X-ray/optical/near-infrared/millimetre) observations of GRB 051022 between 2.5 hours and ~1.15 yr after the event. It is the most intense gamma-ray burst (~ 10^-4 erg cm^-2) detected by HETE-2, with the exception of the nearby GRB 030329. Optical and near infrared observations did not detect the afterglow despite a strong afterglow at X-ray wavelengths. Millimetre observations at Plateau de Bure (PdB) detected a source and a flare, confirming the association of this event with a moderately bright (R = 21.5) galaxy. Spectroscopic observations of this galaxy show strong [O II], Hbeta and [O III] emission lines at a redshift of 0.809. The spectral energy distribution of the galaxy implies Av (rest frame) = 1.0 and a starburst occuring ~ 25 Myr ago, during which the star-forming-rate reached >= 25 Msun/yr. In conjunction with the spatial extent (~ 1'') it suggests a very luminous (Mv = - 21.8) blue compact galaxy, for which we also find with Z Zsun. The X-ray spectrum shows evidence of considerable absorption by neutral gas with NH, X-ray = 3.47(+0.48/-0.47) x 10^22 cm^-2 (rest frame). Absorption by dust in the host galaxy at z = 0.809 certainly cannot account for the non-detection of the optical afterglow, unless the dust-to-gas ratio is quite different than that seen in our Galaxy (i.e. large dust grains). It is likely that the afterglow of the dark GRB 051022 was extinguished along the line of sight by an obscured, dense star forming region in a molecular cloud within the parent host galaxy. This galaxy is different from most GRB hosts being brighter than L* by a factor of 3. We have also derived a SFR ~ 50 Msun/yr and predict that this host galaxy will be detected at sub-mm wavelengths., 7 Pages, 7 figures. Accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract: We report 0.9-1.4 micron spectroscopic observations of NGC1068 collected during the commissioning phase of the near infrared camera spectrometer (NICS) of the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). These yielded the first extragalactic measurement of [PII] (1.188 micron) line emission. In the central 0.75"x2" the [FeII]/[PII] line-intensity ratio is close to unity, similar to that measured in the Orion bar and a factor of about 20 smaller than in supernova remnants. This indicates that most of iron is locked into grains and, therefore, argues against shock excitation being the primary origin of [FeII] line emission in the central regions of NGC1068. We propose the [FeII]/[PII] ratio as a simple and effective tool to study and perhaps resolve the long debated questions related to the origin of [FeII] line emission and, more generally, to constrain the role of shock excitation in active galaxies., 4 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: We present complete near-infrared (0.85-2.45 um), low-resolution (~100) spectra of a sample of 26 disk L-dwarfs with reliable optical spectral type classification. The observations have been obtained with NICS at the TNG using a prism-based optical element (the Amici device) that provides a complete spectrum of the source on the detector. Our observations show that low-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy can be used to determine the spectral classification of L-dwarfs in a fast but accurate way. We present a library of spectra that can be used as templates for spectral classification of faint dwarfs. Abstract: Near-Earth asteroid 2012 DA14 made its closest approach on February 15, 2013, when it passed at a distance of 27,700 km from the Earth's surface. It was the first time an asteroid of moderate size was predicted to approach that close to the Earth, becoming bright enough to permit a detailed study from ground-based telescopes. Asteroid 2012 DA14 was poorly characterized before its closest approach. We acquired data using several telescopes on four Spanish observatories: the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and the 3.6m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), both in the El Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM, La Palma); the 2.2m CAHA telescope, in the Calar Alto Observatory (Almeria); the f/3 0.77m telescope in the La Hita Observatory (Toledo); and the f/8 1.5m telescope in the Sierra Nevada Observatory (OSN, Granada). We obtained visible and near-infrared color photometry, visible spectra and time-series photometry. Visible spectra together with color photometry of 2012 DA14 show that it can be classified as an L-type asteroid, a rare spectral type with a composition similar to that of carbonaceous chondrites. The time-series photometry provides a rotational period of 8.95 +- 0.08 hours after the closest approach, and there are indications that the object suffered a spin-up during this event. The large amplitude of the light curve suggests that the object is very elongated and irregular, with an equivalent diameter of around 18m. We obtain an absolute magnitude of H_R = 24.5 +- 0.2, corresponding to H_V = 25.0 +- 0.2. The GTC photometry also gives H_V = 25.29 +- 0.14. Both values agree with the value listed at the Minor Planet Center shortly after discovery. From the absolute photometry, together with some constraints on size and shape, we compute a geometric albedo of p_V = 0.44 +- 0.20, which is slightly above the range of albedos known for L-type asteroids (0.082 - 0.405)., 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Abstract: We present the preliminary results of a programme aimed at defining a low-resolution near-infrared spectral classification scheme for faint M, L, and T-dwarfs. The method is based on the global shape of R˜100 complete near-infrared spectra from 0.8 to 2.4μm as obtained through a high-throughput prism-based optical element, the Amici device, mounted inside the NICS instrument at the TNG 3.5m telescope (Baffa et al. 2001; Oliva 2000). The aim of our project is to provide an efficient classification scheme based on very low-resolution near infrared spectroscopy, which can be carried on at a 4m-class telescope. The results for the L-type dwarfs have already been presented in Testi et al. (2001), sample spectra for the M and T-dwarfs range are shown in Figure 1. A preliminary application of the method to the classification of young embedded brown-dwarf candidates has been successfully attempted by Testi et al. (2002) and Natta et al. (2002). The method is shown to be accurate and competitive: the high system throughput coupled with the possibility of obtaining in a “single shot” the complete spectrum of the objects make the NICS/TNG system more efficient than existing large telescopes.

Abstract: We have obtained low resolution infrared spectra of 21 brown dwarf candidates, selected from a survey performed at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. The spectra were obtained at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (La Palma), using the NICS spectrometer in the Amici configuration, which allows to observe the range 0.85–2.45 μm in a single shot. The bands shown by most of the spectra confirm that we are dealing with low effective temperature objects. Preliminary results of spectral classification are presented.

47. DUST LOSS FROM ACTIVATED ASTEROID P/2015 X6.

Abstract: We present observations and dust tail models of activated asteroid P/2015 X6 from deep imaging data acquired at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) from 2015 mid-December to 2016 late January. The results of the modeling indicate that the asteroid has undergone sustained dust loss over a period of two months or longer. The dust parameters, derived from multidimensional fits of the available images, are compatible with either ice sublimation or rotational instability processes. An impulsive event, as might be associated with an impact with another body, is less likely. A power-law distribution of particles, with minimum and maximum radii of 1 μm and 1 cm and a power index of −3.3, is found to be consistent with the observations. Depending on the model of ejection velocity adopted, the particle velocities are found to be in the range of 0.3–10 m s−1. The activation time was between 18 and 26 days before discovery. The total mass ejected from that time to the most recent observation is in the range 5–9 × 106 kg. No dust features giving indication of past activity earlier than the activation time have been observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

49. ON THE DUST ENVIRONMENT OF MAIN-BELT COMET 313 P/Gibbs.

Abstract: We present observations carried out using the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias and an interpretative model of the dust environment of activated asteroid 313 P/Gibbs. We discuss three different models relating to different values of the dust parameters, i.e., dust loss rate, maximum and minimum sizes of particles, power index of the size distribution, and emission pattern. The best model corresponds to an isotropic emission of particles which started on August 1. The sizes of grains were in the range of 0.1−2000 μm, with velocities for 100 μm particles between 0.4−1.9 m s−1, with a dust production rate in the range of 0.2−0.8 kg s−1. The dust tails’ brightnesses and morphologies are best interpreted in terms of a model of sustained and low dust emission driven by water-ice sublimation, spanning since 2014 August 1, and triggered by a short impulsive event. This event produced an emission of small particles of about 0.1 μm with velocities of ∼4 m s−1. Abstract: Ryugu is a carbonaceous rubble-pile asteroid visited by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Small rubble pile asteroids record the thermal evolution of their much larger parent bodies. However, recent space weathering and/or solar heating create ambiguities between the uppermost layer observable by remote-sensing and the pristine material from the parent body. Hayabusa2 remote-sensing observations find that on the asteroid (162173) Ryugu both north and south pole regions preserve the material least processed by space weathering, which is spectrally blue carbonaceous chondritic material with a 0-3% deep 0.7-µm band absorption, indicative of Fe-bearing phyllosilicates. Here we report that spectrally blue Ryugu's parent body experienced intensive aqueous alteration and subsequent thermal metamorphism at 570-670 K (300-400 °C), suggesting that Ryugu's parent body was heated by radioactive decay of short-lived radionuclides possibly because of its early formation 2-2.5 Ma. The samples being brought to Earth by Hayabusa2 will give us our first insights into this epoch in solar system history., (© 2021. The Author(s).)
