After clinical Mycoplasma bovis mastitis outbreaks in dairy herds, M. bovis can persist as subclinical intramammary infections. Identification and culling of sub-clinically infected cows may be warranted to reduce future pathogen transmission and disease. In this study, apparent cow-level prevalences of M. bovis intramammary infection within 4 milking herds immediately following outbreaks of clinical disease due to M. bovis were determined utilising PCR and culture. All clinically affected M. bovis cows had been culled from the herds prior to herd sampling. Composite milk samples were collected once from each cow (n = 2,258) using a routine milk recording sampling technique. These samples were pooled for PCR screening; positive pools were analysed in different sized pools as needed from large to small, until individual PCR-positive animals could be identified. Despite M. bovis seroprevalences of 76% (herd 1), 40% (herd 2), 20% (herd 3) and 16% (herd 4), apparent prevalences of intramammary infection in the main milking group based on PCR in herds 1 to 4 were 0.2% (1/497), 0.0% (0/475), 0.1% (1/816) and 0.0% (0/444), respectively. Due to the low apparent prevalences of subclinical intramammary mycoplasma infections in these herds and the high expense associated with milk sample collection and testing, the return on diagnostic investment was very limited, particularly considering that additional cows are likely to have been colonised with mycoplasma in other anatomical sites. The results of this study suggest that pursuing identification of cows with subclinical intramammary mycoplasma infections following resolution of clinical M. bovis disease outbreaks in dairy herds may be of minimal benefit in programs designed to control or eradicate M. bovis.

OBJECTIVE: To report anthelmintic resistance in gastrointestinal nematode parasites of cattle on commercial dairy farms in the Macalister Irrigation District of Gippsland, Victoria. METHODS: Faecal egg count reduction tests (FECRTs) were used to assess anthelmintic resistance on 20 Macalister Irrigation District dairy farms between May 2013 and June 2014. All three currently available anthelmintic classes for cattle nematodes in Australia were tested. Faecal samples were collected 10-14 days post-treatment for individual faecal egg counts (FEC) and larval differentiation. This study employed a semi-quantitative, multiplexed tandem PCR (MT-PCR) to assess the prevalence and infection intensity of four genotypes (buffeli, chitose, ikeda and type 5) of Theileria orientalis in cattle in Australia. Genomic DNA samples from blood samples (n=448) collected from 27 to 32 dairy cows from each of 15 dairy herds with a history of recent theileriosis outbreaks (Group 1), and from blood samples available from 24 cows with or without oriental theileriosis (Group 2) were tested using MT-PCR. Results revealed that all four genotypes were present in Group 1 cattle; genotype buffeli had the highest prevalence (80.5%), followed by genotypes ikeda (71.4%), chitose (38.6%) and type 5 (20.3%). Genotype ikeda had the highest average infection intensity in the cattle (relating to 55,277 DNA copies), followed by buffeli, chitose and type 5 (6354-51,648 copies). The effects of feeding and management systems on the health and welfare of grazing dairy cows were investigated by comparing the claw health of cows fed grain during milking and pasture silage in the paddock (Control), with cows fed a grain-based partial mixed ration (PMR) on a concrete feed pad. Cows were assessed on three occasions during lactation: (1) early lactation (20-81 days in milk [DIM]) before allocation to feeding treatments; (2) mid-lactation (97-158 DIM) immediately following an intensive feeding experiment, and (3) late lactation (173-243 DIM) several months after return to initial management groups. At the final examination, claw puncture resistance was measured. The results showed that for the most prevalent lesions (white line disease, paintbrush haemorrhage and traumatic bruising), there was no effect of feeding system or amount of supplement on the presence of the moderate to severe forms in early lactation, but cows were more likely to have a particular lesion at the second assessment if it was present in early lactation. Puncture resistance of the claw was not related to presence of a lesion for any of the most prevalent lesion types. It was concluded for this herd that for most indicators of claw health, there was no overall effect of different feeding systems (supplement fed during milking or on a feed pad) or amount of supplement.

Management of herd bulls, which may be used at the end of the artificial breeding period or to mate heifers, is often well below optimal on many dairy farms. On some farms, the result of this is reduced reproductive performance over the period in which the bull is run with the herd.

Objective To assess the association between the findings from vaginoscopic examination of postpartum dairy cows with peripartum reproductive disease and their subsequent reproductive performance, and to determine the factors that might be associated with a positive vaginoscopic examination (VV). Methods Cows (n = 1325) from 17 seasonal calving dairy herds were enrolled if they had been calved at least 7 days and had at least one of the following conditions that placed them at risk of endometritis: retained fetal membranes (RFM), dystocia, a dead calf, hypocalcaemia, twin birth, calving induction or an observed vulval discharge (VD). Examination was undertaken 28–37 days before mating start date (MSD) within each herd. All cows were body condition scored (BCS) and were VV scored on a scale of 0 (clear) to 3 (purulent). The uterus and ovaries were assessed by rectal palpation. Results Cows with a positive VV score (1–3) were less likely to conceive to first service and had a lower pregnancy proportion than cows that had a negative VV score (score 0). Mean MSD to conception interval was longer in VV-positive cows. A positive VV score was associated with a low BCS, primiparity, intrapelvic uterus, poor uterine tone, large uterus, RFM, VD, dystocia, dead calf and twins. Conclusion In the present study a positive VV score was associated with reduced reproductive performance and was more common in primiparous and low BCS cows. Of the at-risk cows, those with RFM, VD, dystocia, dead calf or twins were more likely to have a positive VV score.

Multilocus sequence typing analysis of Streptococcus uberis has identified a cluster of isolates associated with clinical and subclinical mastitis and a cluster associated with cows with low somatic cell counts in their milk. Specific groups of genotypes (global clonal complex [GCC] sequence type 5s [ST5s] and GCC ST143s) were highly associated ( P = 0.006) with clinical and subclinical mastitis and may represent a lineage of virulent isolates, whereas isolates belonging to GCC ST86 were associated with low-cell-count cows. This study has, for the first time, demonstrated the occurrence of identical sequence types (ST60 and ST184) between different continents (Australasia and Europe) and different countries (Australia and New Zealand). The standardized index of association and the empirical estimation of the rate of recombination showed substantial recombination within the S. uberis population in Australia, consistent with previous multilocus sequence type analyses.

A controlled trial was conducted in 5 pasture-grazed commercial dairy herds in Australia in 2012 to determine whether premilking teat disinfection and drying of teats reduces clinical mastitis incidence during early lactation by at least 50%. A 50% reduction was estimated to be the minimum required to justify additional costs of labor, disinfectants, and other resources if premilking teat disinfection was implemented in a 500-cow herd averaging 8 clinical cases per 100 cow-months. A secondary aim was to determine whether this premilking teat disinfection routine reduces incidence of new udder infections. Treatment was applied in each herd for approximately 60 d (range of 59.5 to 61 d), commencing in each herd soon after the start of the herd's main or only calving period. Within each herd, cows were allocated to either the treatment (premilking disinfection) or the control (no premilking disinfection) group based on their herd identity number. During the trial period, any cow having a new case of clinical mastitis or an individual cow cell count greater than 250,000 cells/mL of milk (when preceded by individual cow cell counts of 250,000 cells/mL of milk or below) was deemed to have had a new infection. Overall, neither clinical mastitis incidence nor new infection rate differed significantly between treatment and control groups. Over the whole study period, 98 of the 1,029 cows in the premilking disinfection group and 97 of the 1,025 cows in the control group had clinical mastitis. Total cow-days at risk of clinical mastitis were similar in each group. However, clinical incidence rates were markedly lower in treatment cows in one herd (herd 3; incidence rate ratio=0.34) and there was some evidence that new infection incidence rates were lower in treated cows in this herd (incidence rate ratio=0.42). Rainfall during the study period was below long-term district average in all 5 study herds. Cows' teats were less dirty than in previous, wetter years for the 4 herds where no significant clinical mastitis response was detected but some teat soiling was observed in herd 3 during the study period. Routine application of premilking teat disinfection in pasture-grazed herds is unlikely to produce a worthwhile (economic) reduction in the number of clinical mastitis cases when teats are relatively clean and dry and the clinical mastitis incidence is low. However, premilking disinfection might be worthwhile during periods when teats are heavily soiled and the incidence of clinical mastitis due to environmental pathogens is high.

This study was undertaken because clinicians and farmers have observed that a considerable number of cows diagnosed with Streptococcus uberis mastitis have recurrences of mastitis in the same or a different quarter. The study was an attempt to answer whether these recurring cases were due to treatment failure (in which case a search would have begun for a better treatment for Strep. uberis mastitis) or due to reinfection with a different strain of Strep. uberis. Using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), we determined that the majority of recurrences (20 of 27) were caused by a new strain of Strep. uberis, indicating that treatment of the initial infection had been successful. A small number of recurrences (5 of 27) were caused by the initial strain, indicating persistence. The remaining 2 recurrences occurred in a new quarter but with the initial strain of Strep. uberis, indicating either spread between quarters or reactivation of a previous subclinical infection. Analysis of the PFGE profiles failed to reveal any strain-specific propensity to persist, because strains causing recurrences occurred in most of the major clusters.

SUMMARY Thirty-four farms in the Macalister Irrigation District in Gippsland, Victoria, using sustained-release monensin capsules in 5102 cattle in the 1990 bloat season were surveyed. Questions were asked about the prevention and incidence of bloat in 1989 and 1990. Eight farms not using the capsules were selected to act as controls. Relatively low rates of broken capsules (0.6%), injury to animals at administration (0.06%) and regurgltation (1.02%) were reported. A variety of preventive techniques were used. There was a significant decrease in the use of pasture spraying, drinking water administration and flank spraying of anti-bloat substances on the farms using the capsules in the 1990 season, with no compensatory rise in the use of other techniques. There was no significant change in bloat prevention techniques used on the control farms over the same period. Significantly fewer cattle on the farms using capsules were treated for, and fewer died of clinical bloat in 1990 than in 1989. There was no significant change in the incidence of bloat on the control farms over the same period. It was considered that the anti-bloat capsules were effective in reducing the incidence of clinical bloat in pasture-fed dairy cattle.

The professional application of agents to the manipulation of fertility of cows requires basic and applied knowledge of the physiologic mechanisms that are affected and of the pharmacologic agents that are used. In all areas of the pharmacologic manipulation of fertility, the achievement is less than the ideal, and further research is required to improve the efficiency of treatments. The induction of estrus in acyclic animals can involve a reduction in the depth of anestrus, pretreatment with progestagen to ensure estrous behavior and the formation of a normal corpus luteum, and then treatment with exogenous gonadotropin. Responsiveness to treatment can be variable and reflects the depth of anestrus of the animals. Improved treatment regimens require a knowledge of the basic mechanisms involved with the depth of anestrus, a means of assessing the depth of anestrus, and an understanding of the hormonal requirements of ovarian follicles for development and maturation in animals at different depths of anestrus. The optimal precision in the synchronization of estrus (and ovulation) in cyclic animals requires the synchronization of both follicular waves and the end of progestational phase. The end of progestational phase can be synchronized effectively using prostaglandin F2a (or analogs), or by treatment with progestagens with or without luteolytic agents. Procedures to synchronize follicular waves need to be established. The induction of superovulation can be achieved readily using gonadotropins prior to estrus synchronization using prostaglandin F2a. The responses to standard treatments in terms of ovulation rates and yield of transferable embryos are highly variable. The development of procedures to reduce this variability requires an understanding of the intra-ovarian mechanisms involved in recruitment of follicles for a wave of follicular growth, in the selection of dominant follicles for further development, and in the mechanisms controlling follicular atresia. Cystic ovarian disease can be treated effectively using HCG or GnRH (follicular cysts) or prostaglandin F2a (luteal cysts). The basic mechanisms resulting in failure of estrogen positive feedback on LH secretion (that results in cystic follicles) remain to be determined. Small but significant increases in pregnancy rates can be achieved treating cows with prostaglandin during the post-partum period, with prostaglandin to induce estrus for insemination, with GnRH or HCG at estrus, and with GnRH or progestagen treatment during diestrus. Beneficial effects of treatment have been shown in some trials but not in others.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Cows (n = 2,053) from 6 seasonally calving dairy herds were enrolled in a trial to compare the efficacy of 2 dry cow treatments. Cows received either a combination dry cow therapy of 600 mg of cloxacillin (CL) followed by an internal teat sealant (ITS) containing 2.6 g of bismuth subnitrate in all 4 quarters immediately following their final milking for the season, or only an intramammary infusion of 600 mg of CL. All cases of clinical mastitis were recorded and cultured during the first 150 d of lactation in each herd, and cow somatic cell count (SCC) was measured between 7 and 50 d postcalving. A large difference was found between treatment groups in the rate at which cows were diagnosed with clinical mastitis over the first 21 d of lactation, after which time the rate at which cows were diagnosed with clinical mastitis was similar between treatment groups. Analysis of the relative proportions of cows with clinical mastitis was performed at both the gland and cow levels. The relative risk (RR) of clinical mastitis diagnosed within 21, 30, and 100 d of calving in a gland treated with the ITS-CL combination was, respectively, 0.30 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.21–0.44], 0.39 (0.28–0.53), and 0.58 (0.46–0.75) that of the CL group. An interaction between treatment and previous SCC was found when clinical mastitis was analyzed at the cow level. In a subset of cows that had low SCC in their previous lactation, the RR of mastitis in cows with the ITS-CL combination within 21, 30, and 100 d of calving was, respectively, 0.54 (95% CI = 0.33–0.87), 0.57 (0.37–0.88), and 0.69 (0.50–0.99) that of cows that received only CL at drying off. In the subset of cows that had at least 1 high SCC in the previous lactation, the RR of mastitis in the ITS-CL combination group within 21, 30, and 100 d of calving was, respectively, 0.26 (95% CI = 0.16–0.44), 0.37 (0.24–0.57), and 0.72 (0.55–0.96) that of the CL-only group. The ITS-CL combination of dry cow treatments was associated with a reduction in subclinical mastitis [SCC ≥250,000 cells/mL; RR = 0.80 (95% CI = 0.65–0.98)] when compared with treatment with CL alone. The use of an ITS in combination with CL dry cow treatment was associated with significantly lower clinical and subclinical mastitis in the following lactation, with a greater difference found in cows that had a history of subclinical mastitis in the previous lactation.

In 653 mature dairy cows examined for lameness between February 1987 and July 1988 there were 783 lesions identified. Most of these were located below the pastern (90.5%) and most lesions involved hindlimbs (79%). Of digital and interdigital lesions, hind limbs had the most lesions (69.2%). Medial digits of forelimbs were least affected (7.8%) and lateral digits of hindlimbs were the most affected (44.4%). Lateral digits of forelimbs were slightly more affected than medial digits of hindlimbs (17.0% vs 14.8%). Ten different types of lesions contributed to 84.5% of foot lameness. Most common were axial wall cracks (21.7%), underrun sole (14.6%), footrot (13.0%), punctured sole (9.3%) and white line disease (7.2%). Age, rainfall and the early lactation period were factors determining the incidence of lameness.

To determine the effect of intrauterine cephapirin (0.5 g) treatment on the reproductive performance of cows diagnosed as at risk of developing endometritis.Cows (n = 1325) from 17 seasonal calving dairy herds were enrolled if they had been calved for more than 6 days and had a condition that placed them at risk of endometritis. Half were treated with intrauterine cephapirin at an examination performed 28-37 days prior to mating start date (MSD). Cows were scored for body condition, their vaginal discharge was scored using vaginoscopy (VV), and the uterus and ovaries were assessed by rectal palpation.Overall, there was no significant treatment effect on reproductive performance. In 945 modified at risk (MAR) cows the effect of treatment varied with the calving to treatment interval (CTI) and VV status. For the subset of 229 MAR cows with CTIor = 28 days, treatment improved the proportions of first-service conception (OR 3.1; P0.01) and 6-week in-calf (OR 2.1; P0.05), and reduced the mean MSD to conception interval by 20 days (P0.05). The difference was greater in cows with a positive VV score (1-3). Treated VV-negative cows with CTI48 days had a reduced proportion of cows in-calf by 6 weeks (OR 0.58; P = 0.056) compared with untreated cows.Intrauterine cephapirin infusion of MAR cows improved reproductive performance, depending on CTI. The greater treatment effect in VV-positive cows suggests that VV scoring is a useful tool for the diagnosis of endometritis.

Objective To determine the effect of induction of parturition on health, milk production and reproductive performance of dairy cows. Design A prospective cohort study in 62 dairy herds. Procedure Health, milk production and fertility indices were documented for 1449 dairy cows treated with dexamethasone trimethylacetate, with or without prostaglandin to induce calving. Equivalent data was collected for 603 untreated herd mates that calved at approximately the same time. Results The median interval from initial treatment to calving was 11 days. Induction was associated with a substantially lower calf survival and commercial value of surviving calves. Calf viability and value was lower when induced cows were at an earlier stage of pregnancy. Retained foetal membranes, photosensitisation and other problems were significantly more frequent in the induced group compared to the untreated group. Milk production of induced cows was approximately 4% lower than untreated ones, but the majority of reproductive indices were not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions The practice of induction of parturition in seasonal calving dairy herds is a reliable way of shortening the gestation period of cows. Costs associated with morbidity and mortality of induced cows and losses in lactation and calf production are offset by benefits of improved reproductive performance and more efficient management of the herd. The welfare aspects of induction on calf survival must be considered.

The objective of this study was to compare the reproductive performance of anoestrous dairy cows treated just prior to the mating start date (MSD) with a Controlled Internal Drug Releasing Device (CIDR) which was placed intravaginaly for either 6 or 8 days, and a combination of oestradiol benzoate. Lactating dairy cows (n - 926) that had been diagnosed with anovulatory anoestrus were divided into two sub-groups. A hormonal treatment protocol that involved the use of a CIDR device containing 1.9 g of progesterone was inserted into the vagina of each cow and left intravaginally for either 6 (6-day group, n - 441) or 8 days (8-day group, n - 485). Every cow in the trial was inseminated after being detected in oestrus from Day -2 onwards (where Day 0, was a herd's MSD), using an appropriate detection aid according to the herds' preference. Cows that had been seen in oestrus and were inseminated by Day 2 were selected for re-synchrony. The standardised re-synchrony involved the re-insertion of a previously used CIDR device into the vagina of each cow on Day 14, together with an injection of 1.0mgoestradiol benzoate i.m. This CIDR device was removed on Day 22 and each of these cows injected with 1.0 mg oestradiol benzoate i.m. on Day 23. Each re-synchronised cow that was detected in oestrus was re-inseminated. Treatment with an 8-day CIDR increased the proportion of cows submitted for insemination within the first 3 days of the MSD, compared with the 6-day group (83.7% vs 71.2 %, respectively, P 0.001), as well as the proportion of cows conceiving within the first 3 days of MSD (36.2% vs 27.7 %, P = 0.02), but reduced both the interval from MSD to the first service (4.5. + 0.5 vs 6.8 + 0.7, P = 0.01), and the interval from MSD to conception (28.1 + 1.5 vs 34.0 + 1.8, P =0.009). A greater percentage of the cows in the 6-day group that were not pregnant to the first insemination were submitted for a second insemination by Day 28 compared with the 8-day group (81.1 % vs 68.3 %, P 0.001). Conception rates for cows submitted for this second insemination by Day 28 of the MSD were also higher in the 6-day than in the 8-day group (48.4 % vs 33.9 %, P = 0.009). The percentage of cows pregnant at the end of a herd's AI period of 6 weeks did not differ (57.1% vs 54.8%for 8-day and 6-day groups, respectively, P = 0.42); neither did the proportion of cows pregnant at the end of the a herd's combined AI and natural mating period of 21 weeks (81.4% vs 79.2 %, for 8-day and 6-day groups respectively P = 0.36). Treatment of anovulatory anoestrous dairy cows with a combination of an 8-day CIDR and oestradiol benzoate before the MSD improved their reproductive performance by increasing the portion of cows submitted for insemination within the first 3-days of the MSD by reducing the interval from MSD to first service and by increasing the conception rate to the first insemination to collectively reduce the average interval from MSD to conception.

Objective To estimate the accuracy of real-time ultrasonography to detect pregnancy in dairy cows at 28 to 35 days after insemination. Methods Cows that did not return to oestrus between 18 and 24 days after a first insemination (n = 526) were examined by transrectal ultrasonography from 28 to 35 days after insemination. Pregnancy was confirmed by the observation of a foetus, but fluid in the uterine horn and the presence of embryonic membranes were also noted. When pregnancy was not confirmed by the observation of a foetus, a second examination 7 days later, confirmed these remaining cows as pregnant or not pregnant to the first insemination. Detection of pregnancy at this early examination was compared with manual transrectal pregnancy examination performed 10 to 13 weeks after insemination (13-week examination). Results There were 44% of cows that were pregnant to the first service, 34% that had returned for a second service 18 to 24 days after the first insemination, and 20% of cows that were not pregnant, and had not returned normally for a second service (non-pregnant, non-return) within 24 days of their initial insemination. The presence of a foetus at 28 to 35 days after insemination was accurately predicted by a simplified method where uterine fluid accumulation and embryonic membranes were observed. Foetal loss between the early detection and the 13-week examination (9% of pregnancies) indicated that 28 to 35 days post insemination was too early to reliably detect pregnancy. Conclusion Early examination of pregnancy with trans-rectal ultrasonography is an accurate method to identify non-pregnant, non-return cows. The examination can be simplified by the observation of uterine fluid accumulation and embryonic membranes, as opposed to the more involved process of observing the foetus.

The use of an ultrasonic Doppler probe for pregnancy diagnosis was evaluated. Data from the examination of 1115 cattle were analysed. Comparison of the probe with manual rectal palpation by an experienced clinician yielded a sensitivity of 92.8 +/- 1.6% (+/- 95% confidence interval) and a specificity of 75.8 +/- 7.4%. This level of accuracy was found to be insufficient to recommend the probe be used by farmers for the diagnosis of pregnancy.

The study, Involving 37 dairy cows at pasture, revealed significant differences from the pattern of the disease occurring In the northern hemisphere where cows In older age groups, of larger frame size, higher production and fed high grain rations are at Increased risk. Affected cows were diagnosed over a 10-month period and represented approximately 0.06% of the dairy cow population. Most cases were diagnosed In the early lactation period. Evidence for a genetic predisposition was suggested by the discovery that one sire generated a disproportionately large number (9) of the cows with LDA. Although affected cows were average producers in their herds, being a member of a high-producing herd was a significant risk factor.

Inherited epidermal dysplasia (IED), formerly called baldy calf syndrome, is a lethal disease of calves of Holstein-Friesian ancestry. The disease causes progressive illthrift and skin, horn and hoof lesions, which can be confused with inherited zinc deficiency. The clinicopathological features and ancestry of 10 affected calves in Gippsland, Victoria are described.

SUMMARY Sixty-eight cases of uterine prolapse in pastured dairy cows were treated in 2 consecutive spring calving seasons in East Gippsland, Victoria. Fifty cows survived (73.5%). Of 43 cows available for followup, 36 (84%) conceived in the mating period following the prolapse, taking 10 d longer to conceive than herd mates that calved on the same day. Three of the 36 cows (8%) that conceived, aborted, this occurring in the middle trimester of pregnancy. No prolapses occurred at the following calving but one case had suffered uterine prolapse 2 years previously. The conclusions drawn from these observations are that cows with uterine prolapse have a good chance of surviving if treated, that treatment is cost-effective, that uterine prolapse is unlikely to reoccur and treated cows have a good chance of conceiving. The veterinarians involved in this investigation were reasonably accurate in their ability to predict long term survival but not as good in predicting ability to conceive again.

On average, 25% of Holstein-Friesian (HF) cows in pasture-fed herds in Victoria experience extended periods of anovulatory anoestrus (AA) (1). Their conception rates to first insemination (1 AI) are lower than those obtained in spontaneously ovulating (cycling; CYC) herdmates when AA cows have been treated with progesterone (P4) and oestradiol benzoate (ODB) to stimulate oestrus and induce ovulation (30% v. 45%; 1). The aim is to compare plasma P4 concentrations (PPC) and corpus luteum (CL) size in HF cows from 25 to 37 days after 1AI associated with a spontaneous ovulation or an induced ovulation involving treatment for AA, and were pregnant to that 1AI or had an extended luteal phase and were not pregnant. Blood was sampled from each of 127 HF cows in 3 herds at 25, 30 and 37 days after their 1AI (day 0). These cows had not been observed in oestrus after these inseminations. Their pregnancy status was diagnosed by uterine ultrasonography on days 30 and 37 when the dimensions of each CL were also recorded. A standard treatment for AA had been used with 96 of the 127 cows and meant that ovulation had been induced with injected ODB (1 mg). Eighteen of the 96 cows (18.75%) treated for AA had elevated PPC on day 25 but were not diagnosed pregnant on days 30 or 37. The average PPC for all cows increased from 5.6 ng/mL on day 25 to 6.9 ng/ml on day 30 and to 7.4 ng/mL on day 37 (P 0.2). The average diameter of the CL on day 30 was 3.12 cm compared to 3.27 cm on day 37 (P>0.1). These averages were not influenced by pregnancy status or whether the animal had either ovulated spontaneously or been treated for AA. The average PPC in cows treated for AA was lower than spontaneously ovulating contemporaries from day 25 to day 37 after 1AI. These averages were not affected by pregnancy status and were not associated with differences in CL size. Coxo-femoral dislocation was diagnosed in 40 dairy cows. Of the 40 cases, 19 were in a cranio-dorsal direction, 2 caudo-dorsal, 17 caudo-ventral (into the obturator foramen), and 2 cranio-ventral. Thirty cases (75%) were successfully treated by closed reduction. Most cows were treated within 12 h of the dislocation occurring. Treatment was less successful in cases of caudo-ventral dislocation and unsuccessful cases predominated among cows with concurrent obstetrical paralysis or milk fever, and very heavy Friesians.

Details were recorded of 47 cases of coxo-femoral dislocation observed in cattle over 1 year. Treatment was successful in 20/47 (42.6%) cases using a method of closed reduction. Factors that most strongly influenced the prognosis were identified. The most useful single prognostic factor was whether the cow was able to stand before reduction. Other factors that also had a strong positive influence on the prognosis were: age less than 3y, bodyweight less than 400kg and duration of dislocation less than 12h. Nineteen unsuccessful cases were examined at the knackery. Four were found to have a fracture of the proximal femur. The coxo-femoral joint was carefully dissected in the other 15 cases and there was no evidence of hip dysplasia. A seasonal incidence of dislocations, which coincides with the calving and mating periods, was demonstrated during the survey and from practice records for the previous 3 years.

A trial involving 25 herds was conducted in the Maffra area of Victoria to study pregnancy rates after injection of synthetic Gn-RH at service. Of 3502 cows having a first service, 674 cows were injected by the farmer at first service with a single intramuscular injection of 250 micrograms of synthetic Gn-RH, while the remaining 2828 cows acted as untreated controls. First service pregnancy rates were 58.8% in the group treated with Gn-RH and 54.1% in the untreated group, a 4.7% increase or an odds ratio of 1.21 (P less than 0.05). However, adjustment for the potentially confounding variables calving to first service interval and herd reduced the odds ratio to 1.07 (P less than 0.4). Treatment with Gn-RH at second or third service did not alter pregnancy rate to that service compared to untreated services. There was no interaction of treatment with Gn-RH at first service with calving to service interval. It is concluded that injection of 250 micrograms of synthetic Gn-RH at the time of service does not increase pregnancy rate to that service.

Cor pulmonale was diagnosed in a 4-year-old beef cow at pasture. Clinical and pathological evidence for the diagnosis included ventral oedema, respiratory distress, chronic interstitial pneumonia and cardiac failure. The cause of the pneumonia was not identified.

In seasonally calving dairy herds in the Macalister Irrigation Area of Gippsland, Victoria, cows that had not been observed in oestrus by the start of the mating season and which had inactive ovaries based on rectal palpation and progesterone assay were treated with a hormonal treatment (n = 49). Mature cows had calved at least 40 days previously and 2-year-olds had been calved at least 60 days. The treatment consisted of a norgestomet implant and a norgestomet and oestradiol injection on day 1; prostaglandin analogue Prosolvin) on day 8; withdrawal of implant on day 10 and an injection of PMSG; and fixed time artificial insemination 54 to 56 h after implant withdrawal. This treatment was called the Syncro-mate regimen. Control cows (n = 46) were injected with water on days 1, 8 and 10 and artificially inseminated or served by a bull when seen on heat. Forty seven percent of the treated cows became pregnant within 14 days from the start of treatment compared with 20% of control cows (P less than 0.01). There was an effect of age group on the response to treatment. A greater proportion of 2-year-old cows than mature cows became pregnant within 14 days of treatment (79% of 19 v. 27% of 20; Chi square interaction, treatment by age, 6.4, P less than 0.05). In the younger cows there was also a gain of 22 days in the treatment to conception interval over the control cows (P less than 0.001). It was concluded that the Syncro-mate regimen can be an effective treatment for post partum anoestrus in dairy cows under certain conditions.

This paper reports additions to our previously described veterinary health and management program for dairy herds. These include a graphical representation of mean milk production per cow per day, a current and historical record of the distribution of the herd in reproduction states, a standardised index of clinical mastitis and an index of the degree of nutritional anoestrus in a herd. For seasonally-calving herds, new categories of cows requiring examination or consideration have been added to selection lists. These are cows which have no oestrus recorded for 30 days preceding a nominated date for the commencement of breeding and those which have no oestrus recorded for 30 days after the nominated date.

Anoestrous dairy cows in seasonally calving herds in the Macalister Irrigation District of Gippsland, Victoria were treated at the start of the mating period with a progesterone releasing intravaginal device (CIDR). The CIDR was inserted for 7 days and 400 IU of PMSG was injected intramuscularly at removal. There was no clinically useful difference among cows receiving the CIDR, a placebo and untreated cows in the interval from treatment to either first oestrus or conception, the conception rate to first service or percent pregnant by the end of mating. Analyses of data from 2-year-old cows, older cattle, cows calved at least 45 days or cows calved at least 55 days and cows treated 3 weeks after the start of mating did not show improved reproductive performance following treatment with the CIDR.

Objective To determine the effectiveness of treatment of lactating cows with high somatic cell counts in milk. Design Randomised clinical trial. Methods Single pooled quarter samples of milk were obtained from cows with somatic cell counts above 500,000 cells/mL on fifty farms. Milk samples were cultured for known mastitis bacterial pathogens. Cows were randomly allocated to treated and untreated groups. Treated cows received both intramammary cloxacillin and parenteral erythromycin. Single pooled quarter milk samples were obtained at 6 weeks after treatment and were cultured for the presence of pathogenic bacteria. The percentage of samples with no growth at the post-treatment culture was used as an estimate of the bacteriological cures for each pathogen type and for each treatment group. Somatic cell counts of cows were compared between treatment groups and within pathogen group. The number of cows that completed a full lactation were compared between each treatment group and within each pathogen group. Results Treatment had no effect upon bacteriological cures, irrespective of pathogen present or the presence of bacteria during the previous lactation. There was no effect of treatment upon somatic cell count except for cows infected with Streptococcus dysgalactiae in which treatment caused a significant lowering of cell counts. This effect was not present in the subsequent lactation. Treatment of chronically infected cows did not alter the probability of a cow completing a full lactation but did improve the probability of newly infected cows being retained for the next lactation. Twenty-eight of 214 treated cows developed clinical mastitis in more than one quarter after treatment, thus indicating a poor technique by farmers for the insertion of intramammary antibiotics. Conclusions Treatment during lactation of cows with high somatic cell counts in milk is ineffective in reducing bacterial infections and in reducing somatic cell counts to acceptable numbers.

This experiment compared the reproductive performance of synchronised anoestrous dairy cows that were treated initially with a combination of progesterone and oestradiol benzoate and then with either gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) or oestradiol benzoate to resynchronise returns to service. It was hypothesised that injecting anoestrous dairy cows with GnRH 12-15 days after insemination and coinciding with the time of insertion of a controlled intravaginal progesterone-releasing (CIDR) device would increase conception rates to the preceding 1st insemination compared with oestradiol benzoate treated cows; both GnRH and oestradiol benzoate would resynchronising the returns to service of those cows that did not conceive to the preceding insemination. Groups of cows in 11 herds were presented for a veterinary examination after they had not been seen in oestrus postpartum. Those cows diagnosed with anovulatory anoestrus (n = 1112) by manual rectal palpation and / or ultrasonography were enrolled in the trial. Each enrolled cow was injected with 2mg oestradiol benzoate i.m. on Day -10, (where Day 0 was the 1st day of the planned insemination) concurrently with vaginal insertion of a CIDR device. The device inserted was withdrawn on Day -2 and then each cow injected i.m. with 1 mg of oestradiol benzoate on Day -1 unless it was in oestrus. Observation for oestrus preceded each insemination. Every cow that had been inseminated on Days -1,0,1 or 2 was presented for treatment for resynchrony on Day 14 (n=891). They were divided into 2 groups; those with an even number were each injected i.m. with 250 µg of a GnRH agonist (Treatment group n = 477); each of the cows with an odd number injected i.m. with 1mg of oestradiol benzoate (control group, n = 414). Each GnRH or oestradiol benzoate injection preceded reinsertion of a CIDR device previously inserted from Days -10 to -2. It was withdrawn on Day 22, 24 hours before injecting 1mg oestradiol benzoate. Cows observed in oestrus were submitted for a 2nd insemination. Every enrolled cow still present in the herd was pregnancy tested by palpation of uterine contents per rectum about 6 weeks later and again at the end of a herd's seasonal breeding programme. The alternative use of GnRH instead of oestradiol benzoate did not affect the percentage of cows conceiving within 3 days of the mating start date (MSD) (35.6 %vs 35.3 %, P=0.90), resubmission rates for a 2nd insemination among cows not pregnant to the 1st insemination (81.6 % vs 83.5 %, P=0.41), 6-week pregnancy rate (59.3 % vs 60.6 %, P=0.65), 21-week pregnancy rate (86.6 vs 85.0, P=0.36), mean interval from MSD to conception (32.5 + 1.8 days vs 29.9 + 1.8 days, P = 0.26) or conception rate of cows reinseminated by Day 28 (43.3 % vs 38.8 %, P=0.39). When GnRH conception rate of cows reinseminated by Day 28 (43.3% vs was compared with oestradiol benzoate, it did not increase conception rates to the 1st service; it was as effective as oestradiol benzoate in synchronising returns to service in previously treated anoestrous cows that did not conceive to the 1st service. Its use affected neither conception rates to the preceding 1st inseminations nor to the following 2nd inseminations.

Background To examine the association of education with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Method This study included 141,230 male and 336,637 female EPIC-participants, who were recruited between 1992 and 2000. Education, which was assessed by questionnaire, was classified into four categories; BMI and WC, measured by trained personnel in most participating centers, were modeled as continuous dependent variables. Associations were estimated using multilevel mixed effects linear regression models. Results Compared with the lowest education level, BMI and WC were significantly lower for all three higher education categories, which was consistent for all countries. Women with university degree had a 2.1 kg/m2 lower BMI compared with women with lowest education level. For men, a statistically significant, but less pronounced difference was observed (1.3 kg/m2). The association between WC and education level was also of greater magnitude for women: compared with the lowest education level, average WC of women was lower by 5.2 cm for women in the highest category. For men the difference was 2.9 cm. Conclusion In this European cohort, there is an inverse association between higher BMI as well as higher WC and lower education level. Public Health Programs that aim to reduce overweight and obesity should primarily focus on the lower educated population.
