The serotonin transporter (5-HTT) plays an important role in regulating serotonergic transmission via removal of serotonin (5-HT) from synaptic clefts. Alterations in 5-HTT expression and subsequent 5-HT transmission have been found to be associated with changes in behaviour, such as fearfulness or activity, in humans and other vertebrates. In humans, alterations in 5-HTT expression have been suggested to be able to lead to better learning performance, with more fearful persons being better at learning. Similar effects of the variation in the 5-HTT on fearfulness have been found in chickens, and in this study, we investigated effects on learning. Therefore, we tested 52 adult laying hens, differing in their functional 5-HTT genotype (W/W, W/D and D/D) in an operant learning paradigm in three different phases (initial learning, reversal learning and extinction) and in a tonic immobility test for fearfulness. We found that the 5-HTT polymorphism affects the initial learning performance of laying hens, with homogeneous wild-type (W/W) hens being the slowest learners, and the most fearful birds. W/W hens, showed significantly more choices to solve the initial learning task (LME, p = 0.031) and had the highest latencies in a tonic immobility test (p = 0.039), indicating the highest fearfulness. Our results provide interesting first insights into the role of 5-HTT in chickens and its sensitive interaction with the environment. We further suggest that the 5-HTT gene can be an interesting target gene for future breeding strategies as well as for further experimental studies.

RésuméL’histiocytose langerhansienne pulmonaire est une pneumopathie infiltrante diffuse kystique rare, de cause inconnue, qui touche électivement les jeunes patients fumeurs des deux sexes. Les travaux multicentriques menés par le centre de référence ont permis de mieux connaître l’histoire naturelle à court et moyen termes de la maladie et de préciser les modalités de suivi des patients. Une altération importante de la fonction respiratoire peut survenir précocement après le diagnostic chez une proportion significative de patients. Le risque d’une telle évolution diminue après le sevrage tabagique. La cladribine, cystostatique analogue des purines, peut entraîner une amélioration franche de la fonction respiratoire des patients ayant une forme clinique progressive de la maladie, mais ce traitement demeure du domaine de la recherche clinique. Les traitements spécifiques de l’hypertension pulmonaire (anti-récepteurs de l’endothéline, inhibiteurs des phosphodiestérases) peuvent être utilisés avec prudence chez les patients ayant une hypertension pulmonaire sévère, dans des centres spécialisés. La mise en évidence de la présence de la mutation V600E de l’oncogène BRAF dans près de 50 % des lésions d’histiocytose langerhansienne, y compris pulmonaires, constitue une avancée importante dans la compréhension de la pathogénie de cette maladie et ouvre la voie à des approches thérapeutiques plus ciblées.SummaryPulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a rare diffuse cystic interstitial pneumonia of unknown etiology that occurs selectively in young smokers of both genders. Importantly, smoking cessation is associated with a decreased risk of subsequent deterioration. Cladribine, a purine analogue, chemotherapy may dramatically improve lung function in patients with progressive pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis, but this treatment should be used only in the setting of clinical research. Specific pulmonary hypertension therapies (anti-endothelin receptors, inhibitors of phosphodiesterases) may be used with caution in specialized centres for patients with severe pulmonary hypertension, and seem to be well tolerated. The recent identification of the V600E mutation of the BRAF oncogene in approximately half of the Langerhans cell histiocytosis lesions, including pulmonary granulomas, represents an important step forward in the understanding of the pathogenesis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Potentially it opens the way to targeted therapies.

Background Gastroparesis is a complex clinical entity; many aspects of which remain unknown. Although most patients have idiopathic, diabetic, or postsurgical gastroparesis, many are thought to have measurable neuromuscular abnormalities. Immunotherapy has recently been utilized to treat suspected autoimmune gastrointestinal dysmotility. Methods Fourteen patients with symptoms of gastroparesis (Gp) who were refractory to drug/device were selected from 443 Gp patients from 2013 to 2015 who were treated at the University of Louisville motility center. All patients underwent a structural and psychiatric evaluation along with detailed psychological and behavioral examination to rule out eating disorders. We performed detailed neuromuscular evaluation and all 14 patients received at least 12 weeks of intravenous immunoglobulin (400 mg/kg infusion weekly). Response was defined subjectively (symptomatic improvement) using standardized IDIOM score system. Key Results All 14 patients had serological evidence and/or tissue evidence of immunological abnormality. Post-IVIG therapy, there was a significant improvement in symptoms scores for nausea, vomiting, early satiety, and abdominal pain. Conclusions and Inferences Although limited by the absence of placebo group, the data illustrate the role of autoimmunity and neuromuscular evaluation in patients with gastroparesis and support the utility of a diagnostic trial of immunotherapy in an effort to improve therapeutic outcomes for such patients.

During the last two years, 80 patients with definite chronic rheumatoid arthritis were treated with interferon-gamma. Considerable improvement in the clinical picture occurred in 58, with pain decreasing rapidly and lastingly or even disappearing. Even in largely immobile patients the ability to walk and general mobility were nearly fully restored. The treatment was well tolerated in 74 patients. As the substance is administered subcutaneously it is suitable for out-patient treatment.

Published online 7 August 2007; Low-spin states of $^{182}Ir$ were populated through the $\beta^+/EC$ decay of $^{182}Pt$. Two strong $E2$ transitions were observed for the first time: a 25.7keV transition in $^{182}Ir$ and a 34.0keV transition in Re of probable mass A = 178. Spin and parity, $I^\pi = 3^+$, are firmly assigned to the $^{182}Ir$ ground state (g.s.). For the excited states, the parity is established and the spin determined or restricted. These assignments support most of the interpretations of the level structure previously suggested. The systematics for the known $5^+ \to 3^+$ transitions in $\pi h_{9/2} \bigotimes ν 1/2^-[521]$ bands is presented. Using a semi-microscopic two-quasiparticle axial-rotor coupling model, particle configurations have been attributed or suggested for most of the coupled states lying at low energy in $^{182}Ir$.

Laser spectroscopy measurements have been performed on neutron-deficient and stable Ir isotopes using the COMPLIS experimental setup installed at ISOLDE-CERN. The radioactive Ir atoms were obtained from successive decays of a mass-separated Hg beam deposited onto a carbon substrate after deceleration to 1kV and subsequently laser desorbed. A three-color, two-step resonant scheme was used to selectively ionize the desorbed Ir atoms. The hyperfine structure (HFS) and isotope shift (IS) of the first transition of the ionization path $5d^{7}6s ^{2}^{4}F_{9/2} \to 5d^{7}6s6p ^{6}F_{11/2}$ at 351.5nm were measured for $^{182-189}$Ir, $^{186}Ir^{m}$ and the stable $^{191,193}$Ir. The nuclear magnetic moments μI and the spectroscopic quadrupole moments Qs were obtained from the HFS spectra and the change of the mean square charge radii from the IS measurements. The sign of μI was experimentally determined for the first time for the masses 182≤A≤189 and the isomeric state $^{186}Ir^ m$ . The spectroscopic quadrupole moments of $^{182}$Ir and $^{183}$Ir were measured also for the first time. A large mean square charge radius change between $^{187}$Ir and $^{186}Ir^g$ and between $^{186}Ir^m$ and $^{186}Ir ^g$ was observed corresponding to a sudden increase in deformation: from β2 ≃ + 0.16 for the heavier group A = 193, 191, 189, 187 and 186m to β2 ≥ + 0.2 for the lighter group A = 186g, 185, 184, 183 and 182. These results were analyzed in the framework of a microscopic treatment of an axial rotor plus one or two quasiparticle(s). This sudden deformation change is associated with a change in the proton state that describes the odd-nuclei ground state or that participates in the coupling with the neutron in the odd-odd nuclei. This state is identified with the π3/2+[402] orbital for the heavier group and with the π1/2-[541] orbital stemming from the 1h _9/2 spherical subshell for the lighter group. That last state seems to affect strongly the observed values of the nuclear moments.

The γ-ray de-excitations following the β-decay of 83Ga and the β-n decay of 84Ga have been studied. The radioactive species were produced using the PARRNe on-line mass-separator installed at the IPN Orsay Tandem accelerator. Two γ-lines were attributed to 83Ge with the aid of β-γ and γ-γ coincidences. The Z identification of the γ-lines was provided by time analysis of a buid-up/decay cycle. The excited levels of 83Ge can be explained by the coupling of the single neutron state ν2d 5/2 to the first 2+ excitation of the 82Ge core.

The PARRNe facility has been used to produce neutron-rich isotopes 83,84Gaby the ISOL method. Their decay has been studied, and β-γ coincidence and γ-γ coincidence data were collected as a function of time. The first two excited levels in 83Ge and the first excited level in 84Ge have been measured for the first time.

In the framework of the PARRNe program (Production d’Atomes Radioactifs Riches en Neutrons) of IPN Orsay, various techniques are currently used to characterize the release properties of elements of interest from a UCX target. On-line studies have been carried out with two plasma ion sources: a Nier–Bernas and a hot plasma ISOLDE-type (the ISOLDE collaboration kindly supplied us a MK5 ion source for these studies). In parallel, the analysis of the chemical and structure properties of some UCX samples as function of heating conditions has been carried out. Such data are essential to determine optimal conditions for the production of isotopes by the isotope separator on-line (ISOL) technique. First results are presented here for Kr and Ag. Investigations for other kinds of fission targets are planned.

In order to probe neutron rich radioactive noble gases produced by photo-fission, a PARRNe-1 experiment (Production d’Atomes Radioactifs Riches en Neutrons) has been carried out at CERN. The incident electron beam of 50 MeV was delivered by the LIL machine: LEP Injector Linac. The experiment allowed us to compare under the same conditions two production methods of radioactive noble gases: fission induced by fast neutrons and photo-fission. The obtained results show that the use of the electrons is a promising mode to get intense neutron rich ion beams. After the success of this photo-fission experiment, a conceptual design for the installation at IPN Orsay of a 50 MeV electron accelerator close to the PARRNe-2 device has been worked out: ALTO Project. This work has started within a collaboration between IPNO, LAL (Laboratoire de l’Accelerateur Lineaire) and CERN groups.

The release properties of UCx and molten U thick targets associated with a Nier–Bernas ion source have been studied. Two experimental methods are used to extract the release time. Results are presented and discussed for Kr, Cd, I and Xe.

Low-spin states of 184Au have been studied using the β+/EC decay of 184Hg. γ-ray and conversion-electron singles spectra were recorded with 184Hg mass-separated sources. For γ-γ-t and X-γ-t coincidence measurements, mercury nuclei were produced in the 148Sm + 40Ar reaction and transported by a He-jet system. The electron spectra were recorded from 184Hg sources produced at ISOLDE. A level scheme of 184Au including 48 transitions is proposed. The experimental results are interpreted in the frame of a semi-microscopic axial-rotor-plus-two-quasiparticle model developed in the context of the HF+BCS approximation.

High-resolution measurements of low-energy conversion electrons have been performed in odd and odd–odd nuclei with masses around A=182. The experimental setup, a magnetic spectrograph coupled to a specific tape transport system, is described. Three experiments have been performed and the main results are presented.

Laser spectroscopy measurements have been performed on neutron deficient iridium isotopes. The hyperfine structure and isotope shift of the optical Ir I transition 5d76s24F9/2 → 5d76s6p 6F11/2 at 351.5 nm have been studied for the 182–189Ir, \(^{186} {\text{Ir}}^\user1{m} \) and 191,193Ir isotopes. The nuclear magnetic and quadrupole moments were obtained from the HFS measurements and the changes of the mean square charge radii from the IS measurements. A large mean square charge radius change between 187Ir and 186Ir and between \(^{186} {\text{Ir}}^\user1{m} \) and \(^{186} {\text{Ir}}^\user1{g} \) has been observed.

Laser spectroscopy measurements have been carried out on very neutron-deficient isotopes of Au, Pt and Ir, produced as daughter elements from a Hg ISOLDE beam. For these transitional region nuclides, the hyperfine structure (HFS) and isotope shift (IS) were measured by Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (RIS). Magnetic moments μ, spectroscopic quadrupole moments Qs and changes of the nuclear mean square charge radius δ〈rc 2〉along isotopic series have been extracted. For some results, a detailed comparison with theoretical predictions is presented.

The latest results of the research and development program Production d'Atomes Radioactifs Riches en Neutrons (PARRNe) at Institut de Physique Nucleaire (IPN) Orsay are presented. The production of neutron rich isotopes by fast neutron induced fission in a liquid depleted uranium target was measured. A comparison of the production rates with a uranium carbide (UCx) target is given.

Isotope shift and hyperfine structure measurements have been performed on the short lived184Au nucleus using the COMPLIS apparatus installed at ISOLDE. The charge radius change and the magnetic and quadrupole moments of both isomeric and ground states have been deduced. The184Au ground state appears to be slightly more deformed than the isomeric state.

Resonance ionization spectroscopy (RIS) was performed on desorbed Au, and the complete hyperfine spectrum of both isomeric and ground states of the short lived 184Au nucleus has been recorded from the 5d106s S1y2 ! 5d106p P3y2 optical transition. The nuclear moments of both states and the mean square charge radius changes were measured. The magnetic moments were determined to be m 184g I­5 ­ 12.07s2dmN and m I­2 ­ 11.44s2dmN and the spectroscopic quadrupole moments to be Q 184g s ­ 14.65s26db and Q184m s ­ 11.90s16d b. A difference in the mean square charge radius dkr2 c l184g,184m ­ 20.036s3d fm2 was found. [S0031-9007(97)03992-6]

We present here a study of the thermal and physical properties of graphite targets for the SPIRAL project. The main objective was to develop an optimized set-up both mechanically and thermally resistant, presenting good release properties (hot targets with thin slices). We show here the results of irradiation tests concerning the mechanical and thermal resistance of the first prototype of SPIRAL target with conical geometry. We also study the micro-structural properties of the graphite target in order to check that the release properties are not deteriorated by the irradiation. Finally, we present the results concerning the latest pilot target internally heated by an electrical current. This setup has been especially designed to be used in case of low power primary beams.

Introduction Les pneumopathies interstitielles diffuses (PID) sont une complication classique des myosites responsable d’une morbi-mortalite importante. Le traitement optimal de ces PID n’est pas codifie faute d’essais therapeutiques de bonne qualite. L’objectif de notre etude est d’evaluer l’efficacite des traitements utilises sur une cohorte retrospective. Methodes Etude retrospective multicentrique dans 4 centres hospitalo-universitaires Parisiens. Quatre-vingt-un patients traites entre 1994 et 2014 ont ete inclus. La reponse au traitement a court (≈ 3 mois), moyen (≈ 1 an) et long (dernieres donnees) termes a ete evaluee sur les variations de la CVF et de la DLCO. L’amelioration etait definie par une augmentation de la CVF > 10 % de la theorique (%th) ou de la DLCO > 15 %th. Enfin, nous avons compare la variation de ces parametres a court et long termes a l’aide d’un test de Pearson. Resultats A l’inclusion, la CVF moyenne etait de 56 ± 19 %th et la DLCO moyenne a 41 ± 13 %th. En premiere ligne, 48 patients ont recu des corticosteroides (CS) seuls et 33 des CS en association avec des immunosuppresseurs (IS : cyclophosphamide, n = 10 ; rituximab, n = 9 ; mycophenolate mofetil, n = 4 ; methotrexate, n = 5 ; azathioprine, n = 4 ; IgIV, n = 4). Trente-trois patients ont recu des bolus de CS. A court-terme, la premiere ligne a permis une amelioration respective de la CVF et de la DLCO de 9 ± 12 %th ( p p p re annee) en raison d’une reponse initiale insuffisante. A moyen-terme, sur l’ensemble de la population, l’amelioration respective de la CVF et de la DLCO etait de 14 ± 14 %th ( p p p p Conclusion Notre etude permet l’evaluation de l’efficacite du traitement des PID des myosites sur une cohorte importante. Elle suggere que l’utilisation initiale de bolus de CS apporte un benefice supplementaire et que la reponse a court-terme est predictive des resultats a long-terme.

Besides its established functions in intermediary metabolism and developmental processes, the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor β/δ (PPARβ/δ) has a less defined role in tumorigenesis. In the present study, we have identified a function for PPARβ/δ in cancer cell invasion. We show that two structurally divergent inhibitory ligands for PPARβ/δ, the inverse agonists ST247 and DG172, strongly inhibit the serum- and transforming growth factor β (TGFβ)-induced invasion of MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells into a three-dimensional matrigel matrix. To elucidate the molecular basis of this finding, we performed chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-Seq) and microarray analyses, which identified the gene encoding angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4) as the major transcriptional PPARβ/δ target in MDA-MB-231 cells, previously implicated in TGFβ-mediated tumor progression and metastatic dissemination. We show that the induction of ANGPTL4 by TGFβ and other oncogenic signals is strongly repressed by ST247 and DG172 in a PPARβ/δ-dependent fashion, resulting in the inhibition of ANGPTL4 secretion. This effect is attributable to these ligands' ability to induce a dominant transcriptional repressor complex at the site of transcription initiation that blocks preinitiation complex formation through an histone deacetylase-independent, non-canonical mechanism. Repression of ANGPTL4 transcription by inverse PPARβ/δ agonists is functionally linked to the inhibition of cancer cell invasion into a three-dimensional matrix, as (i) invasion of MDA-MB-231 cells is critically dependent on ANGPTL4 expression, (ii) recombinant ANGPTL4 stimulates invasion, and (iii) reverses the inhibitory effect of ST247 and DG172. These findings indicate that a PPARβ/δ-ANGPTL4 pathway is involved in the regulation of tumor cell invasion and that its pharmacological manipulation by inverse PPARβ/δ agonists is feasible.

Pneumococci are responsible for lower respiratory tract infections (bronchitis and pneumonia) and invasive infections (bacteremia and meningitis). Pneumococcal vaccination is recommended for adults at high risk of pneumococcal infection. Asthma is not currently considered as an indication for pneumococcal vaccination and this vaccination is indicated only in case of respiratory insufficiency. Indeed, asthma is not usually considered as a risk factor for pneumococcal infection and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine does not decrease mortality in patients presenting with COPD. According to several recent epidemiological studies, asthma is associated with a doubled risk of pneumonia and invasive infections. This epidemiological association is supported by biological data suggesting increased susceptibility to pneumococcal infection in asthmatic patients. Pneumococci are responsible for 10 to 15% of acute exacerbations and onset of often-severe pneumonia in patients presenting with COPD. The recent availability of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines could be interesting for these patients, but their clinical and cost effectiveness will have to be demonstrated before they can be recommended for these conditions.

The controlled clinical trial reported here is part of a multicenter clinical and basic research project, sponsored by the German Federal Minister of Science and Technology, directed by a standing commission of the president of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, and coordinated by the Max-Planck-Institut fur Biochemie, Munchen. Overall, 249 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were enrolled by 16 participating hospitals. In addition to NSAID treatment, patients were randomly given either interferon gamma (IFN-γ) or placebo. In the IFN-γ group, 107 patients were evaluated and in the control group, 116 patients were evaluated. The response rate after 3 months of treatment, according to joint pain indexes, was significantly higher in the IFN-γ group with an error probability of 1%. IFN-γ was able to reduce the quantity of corticosteroids administered. Compared with the control group, the IFN-γ group benefited considering all parameters measured. Most important side effects were transient fever and transient influenza-like symptoms; all other adverse events were comparable in both groups.

A new experimental setup PILIS II has been installed on-line with the ISOCELE isotope separator (IPN, Orsay). The mass-separated ions are slowed from 30 kV to 500 V and implanted on a graphite collecting disk. The atoms are then thermally desorbed at the implantation region by Nd: YAG laser pulses and selectively ionized by three laser beams. The ions created are mass identified by a time-of-flight (TOF) system. Two versions of the TOF system with accelerating voltages of 1.5 and 30 kV were used to carry out hyperfine structure measurements. With the 30 kV system we obtained an overall detection efficiency of 1.4 × 10−5. First measurements were performed on very light gold and platinum isotopes. It has been shown that PILIS II is well adapted to study very short half-life isotopes ( T 1 2 ∼ 1 s ).

We present the first photoelectron spectrometry experiment on a singly charged ion beam. Taking advantage of the high photon flux emitted in the undulator SU6 of Super‐ACO, we have measured photoelectron spectra produced in the resonant photoionization of Ca+ ions at 33.2‐eV photon energy. The success of this experiment depended strongly on the photon flux available. We demonstrate the capability of photoelectron spectrometry to precisely calibrate the photon spectrum emitted in the undulator.

The first measurement of photoelectron spectra emitted in the photoionization of a singly charged-ion beam by synchrotron radiation is reported. A Ca + -ion beam is resonantly photoionized by the monochromatized photon beam of the SU6 undulator of the SuperACO Storage Ring at 33.20 eV photon energy. The values observed for the kinetic energy and for the intensity of the photoelectron line are in good agreement with the predicted values. The success of this feasibility experiment opens up wide opportunities for similar photoionization and Auger studies on multiply charged ions

Introduction Idelalisib (Zydelig® (Gilead Sciences, Inc)) est indique depuis peu pour le traitement des hemopathies lymphoides B de bas grade. Nous rapportons cinq patients ayant developpe une pneumopathie attribuee a l’idelalisib (PI). Resultats Il s’agissait de 3 hommes et 2 femmes, âges de 71,8 ans ± 9,1 ans. Quatre d’entre eux avaient une leucemie lymphoide chronique refractaire et un presentait une maladie de Waldenstrom (MD) evolutive. Les symptomes (toux, dyspnee et fievre) se sont installes en quelques semaines pour 4 patients et en 5 jours pour le dernier. Quatre patients ont necessite une oxygenotherapie et une admission en reanimation. Deux patients ont ete intubes et ventiles. Le scanner thoracique montrait des opacites en verre depoli chez 4 patients, associees a des condensations alveolaires dans un cas. Un patient presentait des condensations alveolaires isolees. Un lavage broncho-alveolaire a ete realise chez 3 patients, et montrait une alveolite lymphocytaire dans 2 cas. La recherche de pathogenes ou d’une autre toxicite medicamenteuse a permis d’ecarter un diagnostic alternatif. L’idelalisib a ete arrete chez tous les patients. Trois ont recu des corticoides par voix generale et ont evolue de facon favorable. Une autre patiente a evolue spontanement favorablement apres l’arret du traitement. Le dernier patient avec la MD est decede 12 jours apres son admission d’une defaillance multiviscerale associee a des signes de toxicite cutanee rapportes a l’idelalisib. Il n’avait pas recu de corticoides. Conclusion Il s’agit a notre connaissance de la premiere serie de cas decrivant la presentation clinique des PI. Une toxicite pulmonaire medicamenteuse doit etre envisagee dans l’approche diagnostique d’une pneumopathie survenant chez un patient traite par idelalisib.

Changes in mean-square charge radius δ〈r2〉, and magnetic dipole moments μ1 have been measured for a series of neutron-deficient gold isotopes between A = 186 and 196, and for neutronrich 198,199Au, using the PILIS system on-line with the ISOCELE mass separator. These measurements confirm the existence of the shape transition between A = 186 and 187. The measured μ1 values have been compared with calculations using Nilsson, and symmetric-rotor-plus-quasiparticle models. The results are consistent with the interpretation that 186Au is prolate, and that the heavier isotopes have oblate, or possibly triaxial deformation.

NESTER ACC; The release properties of a UCx thick target associated with a hot plasma ion source have been studied. Measurements have been performed for various elements: Kr, Ag, Sn, I and Xe. The analysis is made assuming pure diffusion or pure effusion as the release processes. The results obtained are compared to the data available in the literature.

Laser spectroscopy measurements have been carried out on the neutron-rich tin isotopes with the COMPLIS experimental setup. Using the $5{s}^{2}5{p}^{2\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}3}{P}_{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5{s}^{2}5p6s\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{}^{3}{P}_{1}$ optical transition, hyperfine spectra of $^{126\ensuremath{-}132}\mathrm{Sn}$ and $^{125,127,129\ensuremath{-}131}\mathrm{Sn}{}^{m}$ were recorded for the first time. The nuclear moments and the mean square charge radius variation ($\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\langle}{r}_{c}^{2}\ensuremath{\rangle}$) were extracted. From the quadrupole moment values, these nuclei appear to be spherical. The magnetic moments measured are thus compared with those predicted by spherical basis approaches. From the measured $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\langle}{r}_{c}^{2}\ensuremath{\rangle}$, the absolute charge radii of these isotopes were deduced in particular that of the doubly magic $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}$ nucleus. The comparison of the results with several mean-field-type calculations have shown that dynamical effects play an important role in the tin isotopes.

Radioactive ion beam intensities have been measured at ISOL (isotope separation on-line) facilities from many different targets, but only rarely these intensities are converted into production cross-sections. Here we discuss the method and possible problems in this conversion at the examples of Kr and Xe produced by 1.4 GeV-proton-induced fission of 238U at ISOLDE and Rb and Cs produced by approx. 10 MeV-neutron-induced fission of 238U at PARRNe.

A first version of an isotopic separator on line test bench has been built in order to test the feasibility of the production of radioactive species from 96 MeV/u of /sup 20/Ne impinging on a thick target of MgO. This test bench was equipped with a very compact ECR ion source (Nanogan) entirely made from permanent magnets and operating at 10 GHz. We succeeded in producing and ionizing /sup 18/Ne/sup 2,4+/; /sup 19/Ne/sup 1,2,3,4+/ and /sup 23,24/Ne/sup 1+/. We then decided to build a new higher performance separator (SIRa) allowing the use of different types of ion sources. It will be completed by the end of 1993. >

The variation of the mean square charge radius ( δ 〈 r 2 〉 ) between these nuclei and the nuclear moments of the isomers and the odd isotopes were thus measured. From the quadrupole moments values, all these nuclei appear to be spherical. The experimental magnetic moments are thus compared with the Schmidt values calculations. Moreover, the measured δ 〈 r 2 〉 are compared with several mean field calculations.

Yields of neutron-rich isotopes produced by fast neutron induced fission of 238 U were measured at the ISOL set-up Production dAtomes Radioactifs Riches en Neutrons. A surface ion source was used to ionize selectively elements with low ionization potentials. In order to observe also the most n-rich isotopes, the identification was achieved by a combined measurement of b- and c-rays and b-delayed neutrons. The flux of fast neutrons inducing fission was generated by a 1 lA beam of 26 MeV deuterons stopped in a graphite converter. The target was a standard ISOLDE type 238 UC

A PARRNe 1 experiment (Production d'Atomes Radioactifs Riches en Neutrons) aimed at the production of neutron-rich radioactive noble gases produced by photofission has been performed at CERN. The LEP Pre-Injector (LPI) has been used to deliver a 50 MeV electron beam. The results obtained show clearly that the use of an electron beam to produce neutron-rich fission fragments for futur RNB facilities is an option that should not be neglected.

Using the 5s 25p 23P 0 → 5s 25p6s 3P 1 optical transition, hyperfine spectra of 126-132Sn and 125m, 127m, 129m-131mSn where recorded for the first time. The variation of the mean-square charge radius ( δ〈r 2〉) between these nuclei and nuclear moments of the isomers and the odd isotopes were thus measured. An odd-even staggering which inverts at A = 130 is clearly observed. This indicates a small appearance of a plateau on the δ〈r 2〉 which has to be confirmed by measuring the isotope shift beyond A = 132.

The PARRNe (Production d’Atomes Radioactifs Riches Neutrons) R&D program is dedicated to the determination of the best conditions for the production of neutron-rich beam in prospect of the SPIRAL2 project. A complete description of this program, its subdivisions (PARRNe 0, 1 and 2 sub-programs) and the different experimental setup involved can be found in [1,2]. An experiment using the “PARRNE 1” procedure aimed at measuring on-line production of rare gases was performed at CERN.
