Abstract

All major JET systems have been fully commissioned for D-T and the DTE1 series of experiments has started with the D-T fuel mixture and operating conditions foreseen for ITER. In the area of ITER physics, significant results have been produced in both D-D and D-T. In D-D, the LH threshold power database has been extended, the bounds on edge-electron temperature and density in ELMy H-modes have been defined and the advantages of Types I and III ELMy discharges have been compared. In D-T plasmas, the isotope effect on H-mode threshold power and transport has been determined so that a more accurate assessment can be made of the ignition margin and heating requirements for ITER. Trace tritium experiments have provided first particle transport measurements and an assessment of the ITER reference ion-cyclotron resonance-frequency heating scenarios has been started, In the area of fusion performance, record D-D neutron yields have been obtained by controlling the plasma and current profiles in hot ion ELM-free H-modes and optimized shear modes. In D-T, internal transport barriers have been readily established in optimized shear discharges and Alfven eigenmodes have been observed.

Abstract

The JET neutral beam injection system has proved to be both effective and reliable as a plasma heating device. The ion heating and plasma fuelling characteristics of the system are ideally suited to the production of high fusion performance plasmas while the flexibility in the choice of beam species (H, D, T, 3 He or 4 He) and the ability to inject into almost any JET plasma configuration allows a wide variety of related physics experiments to be carried out. The capability to inject (for the first time) tritium beams was essential to the successful execution of the first tritium experiments in which 1.7 MW of power from DT fusion reactions was generated.

Abstract

An account is given of the high performance plasmas established by development of the H-mode regime in JET in the experimental campaigns up to 1992. High performance in this case is measured in terms of the confinement enhancement achieved over the L-mode scaling as measured using the plasma diamagnetism. Three JET H-mode regimes have achieved enhancement factors (H G DIA ) over Goldston L-mode scaling of 2.5 < H G DIA < 4.0. These are the Pellet Enhanced Performance (PEP) H-MODE, the high bootstrap fraction (high β POL ) H-mode and the Hot Ion (HI) H-mode. The phenomenology of these three regimes is reviewed and contrasts and common threads are elucidated

Abstract

Since the initial operation of the JET ICRF system in 1985, up to 22 MW has been coupled to the plasma, many heating scenarios have been demonstrated and the main technological problem of RF-specific impurity production overcome. Many developments of the antennae have taken place over this period, notably the replacement of the water-cooled nickel screens with indirectly cooled beryllium screens, and the forthcoming installation of eight new A2 antennae for operation during the pumped divertor phase of JET. The A2 antennae include enhanced provision for fast wave current drive experiments on JET. This paper describes the beryllium screens, the technological results from operation and subsequent inspection of these screens, the design of the A2 antennae and the results from high power RF testing of a model of the A2 antenna.

Abstract

The lower hybrid current drive experiment on JET (Joint European Torus), which is aimed at generating current in the plasma by launching a wave at 3.7 GHz into the torus, is described. The experiment required building a large high-power microwave generator and antenna. The generator can provide 15 MW for 10 s or 12 MW for 20 s. The power will be fed to a phased-array antenna consisting of 48 stainless steel modules assembled in an array of 384 waveguides. The antenna position will be controlled in real time in order to optimize the coupling to the plasma. The phasing between different modules can be set to vary the N/sub /// between 1.8 and 2.4. >

Abstract

After one year of operation the new A2 ICRF system installed for the pumped divertor phase of JET has achieved a coupled power of 16 MW, a coupled energy of 70 MJ, and combined heating with NB of 32 MW, each in ITER relevant high density, highly radiating, ELMy H-mode plasmas. The generators and antenna system now operates over 30 kV, with rapid, on-line matching and phase control of four coupled current straps. The coupling to the plasma and heating efficiency are phase dependent-coupling improves but heating efficiency falls with decreasing k/spl par/; good heating in monopole phasing has been observed after installation of a new separator between the set of antennae in one of the modules. Cross-coupling between straps enhances the imbalance in plasma coupling of the inner and outer straps of the array due to a mismatch in the feed lines. Modifications to reduce this imbalance and improve low k/spl par/ operation are described. The A2 array is similar in size to one row of the current ITER in-port antenna design. The implications for such a design are discussed.

Abstract

The performance of ICRF systems are often degraded by ELMS. The transient increase in coupling increases VSWR at the generator, which may trip/crowbar the generator. JET plan to insert a tuned length of 105 ohm line into the 30 ohm line between the antenna and the existing stub. At four discrete frequencies, the change in antenna load can then be tracked by the frequency to maintain low VSWR at the generator. The JET system will accept a coupling in the range 2–10 ohms, requiring the electrical length between the antenna and 105 ohm line to be set within a few centimetres, and a frequency scan of 300 kHz with millisecond response time.

The full Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD) launcher in JET has been completed and installed. Up to 6 MW has been coupled to the plasma and 2 MA full current drive was achieved with 4 MW of LH power. Coupling is improved by using active feedback control on the launcher and plasma position. A new launcher design concept, called Hyperguide, has been developed and tested successfully in JET to replace eventually conventional launchers using multijunctions for next step machines like ITER.

Abstract

JET was extensively modified in the 1992/93 shutdown. The new pumped divertor and many new systems were brought into operation early in 1994. Operations have progressed to 4MA plasma current and, with substantial additional heating, H-mode confinement results confirm the expected scaling. The high power handling capability of the pumped divertor with sweeping is estimated at 20MW for 20s. H-mode plasmas have large Type I ELMs. With lower hybrid heating alone, 2MA full current drive has been achieved with good efficiency, with ICRF power, effective heating and direct electron heating have been demonstrated.

Abstract

Two devices operational with Teslas NbTi coils have been built in order to undertake developmental programmes in superconducting magnets for fusion and high field research. The inner bore for experiments is in the 300 mm range. This paper describes the cryostat system which enables superfluid helium at 1.8 K and atmospheric pressure to be used. Some constructional details concerning the main components are given. The result of the cryogenics tests are finally presented: a fully automated operation at 1.8 K with a rather small standard pump and a liquid helium consumption less than 4 lh -t-1 fed at 4.2 K.

A large lower hybrid current drive launcher has been designed for coupling 12 MW of 3.7 GHz power to the JET plasma for 20 second pulses. The launcher utilises the multijunction technique to achieve 384 waveguides at the grill mouth in a single JET port, with a central N || of 1.8. The design features of this launcher are described with details of the principal components and the results of high power RF tests of these components.

Abstract

The main results are: a peak power deposition profile generating large internal temperature relaxation (giant sawteeth) , a comparison of results using antennae with different wavelength radiation patternsand the low level ofimpurity effect.

Abstract

The electrostatic screens for the A1 JET ICRF antennae are required to be water-cooled in order to extend the pulse length to 20 seconds. Whilst many features found beneficial in the uncooled (Ao) antenna have been retained, the provision of cooling, improvements in shape and interfacing with the toroidal limiter have much increased the complexity. The screens are fabricated in high purity nickel and manufacture has involved the development of machining, forming and welding processes to obtain the required mechanical performance. Tests of samples, a short proof assembly and a prototype screen have qualified the design and manufacturing processes. Magnetic forces during disruptions are reduced by the use of resistive electrical contacts, and the screen cooling is also used to cool the antenna side protection between pulses.

Abstract

Thermal properties of superfluid helium have been studied for more than 30 years; now they are being utilized in numerous laboratories investigating specific applications of superconductivity. One of the properties of great importance is its high thermal conductivity, which makes the liquid heat capacity of a cooling bath almost fully available to absorb local heat pulses. This behavior is of great interest for the cryogenic stabilization of pulsed superconducting magnet systems[1].

Abstract

Two antennae have been installed in JET and operated to the maximum design capability of the generators. 4.5 MW, 10 MJ have been coupled to the plasma which heated up to a maximum stored energy of 3 MJ with central temperatures of T e0=5 keV and T i0=4 keV without increase of the relative impurity concentration. Degradation of energy confinement is observed according to an L mode scaling. The effect of k/sub //// shaping is discussed using a quadrupole antenna. Hydrogen and helium 3 minority heating regimes give similar results.
