Abstract

Summary: Background: Insulin resistance (IR) is an important risk factor for multiple chronic diseases, increasing mortality and reducing life expectancy. The associations between emerging surrogates for IR, triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) and TyG-related indicators, with all-cause mortality and life expectancy in middle-aged and older patients in primary care are unclear. Methods: This study originated from the Polish primary care cohort LIPIDOGRAM2015, including patients aged ≥45 years. Baseline fasting triglycerides and fasting glucose were used to derive TyG. Other TyG-related indicators included TyG-adjusted body mass index (TyG-BMI), TyG-adjusted waist circumference (TyG-WC), TyG-adjusted waist-to-hip, and TyG-adjusted waist-to-height. In this longitudinal analysis, we assessed associations between TyG-related indicators with total all-cause mortality, premature (age at death ≤75 years) all-cause mortality and years of life lost (YLL). Findings: We included 10,688 patients (mean age 61.8 ± 9.3 years; 63.5% female). Cumulative total and premature all-cause mortality were 7.2% and 4.6%, respectively, during 5.7 years (IQR 5.6–5.7) of follow-up. Lowest (Q1) and highest quartile (Q4) of TyG-BMI and TyG-WC were associated with total all-cause mortality (second quartile [Q2]: reference; TyG-BMI: Q1: aHR 1.33, 95% CI 1.07–1.65, Q4: aHR 1.28, 95% CI 1.03–1.58; TyG-WC: Q1: aHR 1.44, 95% CI 1.14–1.82, Q4: aHR 1.29, 95% CI 1.04–1.59), similar results for premature all-cause mortality. Within age 45–80 years, compared with Q2 and third quartile, YLL were 4.49 and 5.46 years for TyG-BMI Q1 and Q4, respectively, 3.24 and 5.31 years for TyG-WC Q1 and Q4, respectively. Interpretation: TyG-BMI and TyG-WC demonstrated a U-shaped association with total and premature all-cause mortality. Low and high levels of TyG-BMI and TyG-WC were associated with reduced life expectancy. Despite the relatively short follow-up period, significant associations were still observed, but longer follow-up studies are required to further explore these relationships. Abstract

Both preserved gapless states and gapping of Dirac states due to broken time reversal symmetry in bismuth chalcogenide topological insulators with surface and bulk magnetic impurities have been observed and reported in the literature. In order to shed more light on the mechanism of such effects we have performed comprehensive element selective study of the impact of Fe impurity position in the Bi _2 Se _3 lattice on its magnetism. The iron atoms were imbedded in the structure (volume dopants) or deposited on the surface (adatoms) and they revealed striking phenomena. Volume doping preserves non-trivial topology of Bi _1.98 Fe _0.02 Se _3 . Fe atoms not only substitute Bi, but also locate in van der Waals gap. The former are magnetically isotropic, while the latter reveal large magnetic moment (4.5 μ _B ) with perpendicular anisotropy if located near the surface. Majority of Fe adatoms on the surface of Bi _2 Se _3 exhibit weaker moment (3.5 μ _B ) with in-plane anisotropy, as expected for non-interacting species. Negligible interaction between surface electronic states and magnetic adatoms is confirmed by identical vibration spectra of Fe deposited on TI surface of Bi _2 Se _3 and non-TI surface of Bi _2 S _3 . The data gathered show how indispensable is the knowledge of the magnetic impurity distribution for applications of bismuth chalcogenide systems.

4. Performance analysis of a microbolometer camera with and without Peltier tempera-ture stabilizer

Abstract

The article presents thermal modelling of a microbolometer detector inside the FPA (Focal Plane Array) camera.This modelling assumes heat transfer from/to the bolometer matrix through the multilayer structure. The Peltier cooler is one of the layer which enables the equalization and stabilization of the temperature below the FPA. The presented model allows to simulate the heat transfer by radiation between the matrix and an object and the impact of Peltier device on the FPAtemperature. The parasitic radiation heat transfer between the detector and surrounding objects resulting in the non-uniformity of the generated signal is neglected. Abstract

Background: The anti-DFS70 autoantibodies are one of the most commonly and widely described agent of unknown clinical significance, frequently detected in healthy individuals. It is not known whether the DFS70 autoantibodies are protective or pathogenic. One of the factors suspected of inducing the formation of anti-DFS70 antibodies is increased oxidative stress. We evaluated the coexistence of anti-DFS70 antibodies with selected markers of oxidative stress and investigated whether these antibodies could be considered as indirect markers of oxidative stress. Methods: The intensity of oxidative stress was measured in all samples via indices of free-radical damage to lipids and proteins such as total oxidant status (TOS), concentrations of lipid hydroperoxides (LPH), lipofuscin (LPS), and malondialdehyde (MDA). The parameters of the non-enzymatic antioxidant system, such as total antioxidant status (TAS) and uric acid concentration (UA), were also measured, as well as the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD). Based on TOS and TAS values, the oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated. All samples were also tested with indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and 357 samples were selected for direct monospecific anti DFS70 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) testing. Results: The anti-DFS70 antibodies were confirmed by ELISA test in 21.29% of samples. Compared with anti-DFS70 negative samples we observed 23% lower concentration of LPH ( P = .038) and 11% lower concentration of UA ( P = .005). TOS was 20% lower ( P = .014). The activity of SOD was up to 5% higher ( P = .037). The Pearson correlation showed weak negative correlation for LPH, UA, and TOS and a weak positive correlation for SOD activity. Conclusion: In samples positive for the anti-DFS70 antibody a decreased level of oxidative stress was observed, especially in the case of samples with a high antibody titer. Anti-DFS70 antibodies can be considered as an indirect marker of reduced oxidative stress or a marker indicating the recent intensification of antioxidant processes.

Abstract

Background and aims: An inverse relationship between lipid levels and atrial fibrillation (AF) has been suggested, but whether the association is upheld for all age groups remains unclear. The aim of the study was to examine associations between lipid levels and AF by age groups in a nationwide study in Poland. Methods: Multivariate Poisson regression models were used to estimate prevalence ratios (PRs) for AF by lipid levels. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), non-HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C ratios were grouped into quartiles. Results: Of the 13,724 participants, 5.2% (n = 708) had AF. People with AF were older with more comorbidities, but lower lipid levels (all p < 0.05). The prevalence of AF was inversely associated with LDL-C (Adjusted PR (95% Confidence Interval) highest versus lowest quartile: 0.60 (0.48, 0.75)), TC (0.61 (0.49, 0.75)) and non-HDL-C (0.63 (0.51, 0.78)). The prevalence of AF was inversely associated with HDL-C (0.58 (0.46, 0.74)), but this was not statistically significant for people aged 75 years and older. For the LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, the prevalence of AF was only inversely associated with higher levels for people aged 75 years and older (0.75 (0.61, 0.94)). There was no statistically significant difference in prevalence of AF by TG levels. Conclusions: The results suggest an inverse relationship between lipid levels and AF. Abstract

Background: Physicians' adherence to guideline-recommended therapy is associated with short-term clinical outcomes in heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, its impact on longer-term outcomes is poorly documented. Here, we present results from the 18-month follow-up of the QUALIFY registry. Methods and results: Data at 18 months were available for 6118 ambulatory HFrEF patients from this international prospective observational survey. Adherence was measured as a continuous variable, ranging from 0 to 1, and was assessed for five classes of recommended HF medications and dosages. Most deaths were cardiovascular (CV) (228/394) and HF-related (191/394) and the same was true for unplanned hospitalizations (1175 CV and 861 HF-related hospitalizations, out of a total of 1541). According to univariable analysis, CV and HF deaths were significantly associated with physician adherence to guidelines. In multivariable analysis, HF death was associated with adherence level [subdistribution hazard ratio (SHR) 0.93, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.87–0.99 per 0.1 unit adherence level increase; P = 0.034] as was composite of HF hospitalization or CV death (SHR 0.97, 95% CI 0.94–0.99 per 0.1 unit adherence level increase; P = 0.043), whereas unplanned all-cause, CV or HF hospitalizations were not (all-cause: SHR 0.99, 95% CI 0.9–1.02; CV: SHR 0.98, 95% CI 0.96–1.01; and HF: SHR 0.99, 95% CI 0.96–1.02 per 0.1 unit change in adherence score; P = 0.52, P = 0.2, and P = 0.4, respectively). Conclusion: These results suggest that physicians' adherence to guideline-recommended HF therapies is associated with improved outcomes in HFrEF. Abstract

Results of X-ray absorption spectroscopy study on Gd doped (Tl 0.5 Pb 0.5 )Sr 2 (Ca 1− x Gd x )Cu 2 O z . ( x =0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) superconductors are reported. The Gd L 3 absorption edges were studied in the XANES (near-edge) region and in the EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption) region. The XANES spectra are typical for Gd in oxide compounds with the absorption edge followed by a strong “white line” peak which slightly decreases its intensity with increasing Gd content x . The Fourier transformed EXAFS spectra reveal two well resolved peaks corresponding to the oxygen nearest neighbours and the cation next neighbour shell, respectively. From simulations and of the EXAFS spectra to the structure of the host 1212 compound the location site of gadolinium is determined and its possible influence on the local structural environment of the site is analyzed.

Abstract

IR, Raman, X-ray, electron absorption and luminescence studies have been performed for novel laser Nd 3 BWO 9 and Eu 3 BWO 9 borotungstates exhibiting non-centrosymmetric crystal structures. The assignment of observed vibrational modes to respective symmetry and vibrations of atoms has been proposed. These studies have shown that vibrational and electronic properties of these crystals can be better explained when P 6 3 symmetry is assumed, instead of previously proposed P 3 one. The crystal structure refinement has also confirmed that symmetry of the Eu 3 BWO 9 borotungstates is P 6 3 , not P 3.

Abstract

ScFe4Al8 and YFe4Al8 crystallise in the tetragonal structure of the ThMn12–type. Whilst there exists antiferromagnetic ordering in the Fe sublattice below about 100–200 K in these compounds, they can be considered the reference materials for the RFe4Al8 where R = magnetic lanthanide, U or Np. Our recent magnetic measurements in a low magnetic field of 50 Oe have revealed another pronounced anomaly in the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility at lower temperature (LT) than the Neel point. There is a clear difference in the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility measured in zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled mode (FC). Thus a deviation from stoichiometry, spin–reorientation transition (SRT) and spin–glass (SG) state are discussed as possible reasons for the LT anomalies. The magnetic susceptibility of unoriented single crystals of ScFe4Al8 and YFe4Al8 does not follow either the Curie–Weiss or the modified Curie–Weiss law. Abstract

Dielectric and ultrasound measurements of berthierite FeSb 2 S 4 reported in the literature revealed a phase transition at T c =348 K. In the present study the phase transition was confirmed by Mossbauer spectra exhibiting anomalous behavior close to 350 K. Precise lattice parameters measured in the temperature region 305–380 K show a change of slope at about 350 K. The crystal structure of FeSb 2 S 4 has been determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data at both room temperature and 370 K above the phase transition. The crystal structure is orthorhombic, Z =4. At 295 K a =11.412(2) A, b =3.763(1) A, c =14.161(3) A, and R =0.0280, and at 370 K a =11.421(2) A, b =3.771(1) A, c =14.173(3) A, and R =0.0274. No symmetry change has been observed. At both temperatures the space group of FeSb 2 S 4 is Pnma with small changes in atomic parameters and interatomic distances. The transition observed at 348 K is, therefore, to be classified as a weak phase transition going on without essential changes in the crystal structure.

Thermogravimetric in situ measurements of oxygen loss from (RE)Ba2Cu3O6 samples (RE=Y, Nd, Er) heated isothermally in a relatively high dynamic vacuum were made with a Cahn RG electrobalance. Single-phase orthorhombic samples of composition (RE)Ba2Cu3O7-x (highest oxygen content) were synthesized from stoichiometric (1:2:3) mixtures of high-purity (RE)2O3, BaCO3 and CuO. The original 1:2:3 mixture was prepared by the two-stage procedure described earlier. The crystal structure of the sample in the original orthorhombic phase was controlled by the X-ray powder method (CuKα radiation) using a Stadi P Stoe diffractometer with a position-sensitive detector. The decomposition curves are described by the sum of exponential terms corresponding to rapid and slow first-order processes in which differently sized grains of the powder samples are involved. The activation energies are estimated from appropriate Arrhenius plots.

Abstract

Electrical resistivity and low temperature magnetoresistivity (MR) measurements made on a single crystal of UCu${}_{2}$Si${}_{2}$ are reported. By using as a phonon reference the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of ThCu${}_{2}$Si${}_{2}$, we could establish that UCu${}_{2}$Si${}_{2}$ has both ferromagnetic (FM) and Kondo behaviors, which can be described by the underscreened Kondo lattice model. Our MR measurements revealed the presence of magnetic fluctuations within the FM order as it had been reported before for UGe${}_{2}$. Also, one of the calculated Fermi surface sheets exhibited nesting properties, being in perfect agreement with the previous neutron diffraction data, which supports the possibility of the presence of the spin-density wave (SDW) phase. In the ternary silicide considered here in the region of temperatures where the strong FM order exists, this phase is signalized by magnetic fluctuations. The latter may emerge as an ordered antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase of an SDW-like character when the local ferromagnetism disappears at a slightly lower temperature than its ${T}_{\mathrm{N}}$. The differences in the lack or observation of these two transitions in the temperature run were found to be strongly sample dependent.

Abstract

The aim of the paper was a search for polymorphism in LiNH4SeO4 (LASe) single crystals and the study of the structure of the only known α-modification of LASe. We found the α-LASe to be isomorphous with α-LiNH4SO4 (the space group Pca21). Two kinds of polytypes, the A with cA = c and the B with cB = 2c, were observed. The two polytypes were found to exist simultaneously in each single crystalline sample with the B-polytype prevailing. This superstructure is found to affect the α rightarrow β polymorphous transformation.

Abstract

The crystal structure refinement and electronic structure of the hexagonal paramagnetic ternary compound URuGa are investigated. The latter is calculated by employing full-potential local-orbital minimum basis full relativistic band-structure method, as well as probed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of both valence bands and $4f$ core levels. Good agreement is achieved between the theoretical and experimental XPS results, which show a very high delocalization of the $\mathrm{U}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}5f$ states in this intermetallic compound. The earlier reported possibility of an occurrence in URuGa of spin fluctuations has been confirmed. This phenomenon is supported by the bulk-measurement data of the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity.

Abstract

Electronic properties of the antiferromagnetic Kondo compound ${\mathrm{UCu}}_{5}\mathrm{Al}$ have been investigated through magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, and Hall coefficient measurements on single-crystal and polycrystalline samples. ${\mathrm{UCu}}_{5}\mathrm{Al}$ orders antiferromagnetically below 16 K and shows a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy. In the paramagnetic state, pronounced incoherent Kondo interactions and crystal field effects are observed. At low temperatures, in spite of the lack of coherence, ${\mathrm{UCu}}_{5}\mathrm{Al}$ exhibits some characteristic properties of heavy-fermion systems, namely, an enhanced susceptibility, and enhanced electronic specific heat coefficient, revealing an enhanced effective electron mass. The specific heat and transport properties evidence a competition between the Kondo effect and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions. This feature, together with the frustration of the magnetic interactions originating from atomic disorder appear to be important for the development of the heavy-fermion state in ${\mathrm{UCu}}_{5}\mathrm{Al}.$

Abstract

Ce6Pt11In14 crystallizes with a monoclinic unit cell (space group C2/m; lattice parameters: a=22.729(5) A, b=4.3960(10) A, c=14.780(3) A, β=118.35(3)°; Z=2). It is paramagnetic down to 1.9 K, and strongly anisotropic in the entire temperature range studied. The electrical resistivity along the b-axis shows Kondo features with a maximum located at 7 K. The transverse magnetoresistivity isotherms, measured in the incoherent region, follow a single-ion Kondo scaling with the characteristic temperature T*=4 K.

X-ray investigations of Eu2+-rich precipitates in NaCl single crystals have revealed the presence of two phases. Phase A of chemical formula EuCl2 with a CaF2-type structure and lattice parameter a = 6.969 (2) A preserves strictly the orientation of the matrix lattice. Phase B with the lattice parameter a = 7.47 (1) A and tentative formula EuCl2.2NaCl, containing Eu2+ ions and charge-compensating cation vacancies, is localized at subgrain boundaries and is thermally less stable than phase A.

Background: Neuropathy affects 25% of people with diabetes mellitus. The evaluation of disease severity is still a challenge for modern medicine. Many screening instruments are based primarily on clinical criteria. There is a lack of a simple, reliable and precise scoring system that could improve the classification of neuropathy and monitor disease progression using not only clinical criteria but also electroneurography. There is a need to find sensitive neurography parameters that reflect peripheral nerve impairments in this group of patients., Objectives: This study aimed to create a scoring system for diabetic neuropathy, based on electroneurography criteria, that reflects the natural course of the disease. A new scoring system will improve the treatment of patients with diabetes mellitus., Material and Methods: A total of 113 patients with distal symmetrical polyneuropathy (DSPN) were involved in the study. Median, ulnar, sural, tibial, and peroneal nerves were examined. Parameters such as amplitude, conduction velocity, distal latency, and F wave latency were analyzed. The results of nerve conduction studies in the investigated group were compared to those of the control group, which consisted of 61 healthy volunteers., Results: The most sensitive parameter of peripheral nerve impairment severity was a reduction of the sensory action potential amplitude in the peroneal nerve by 72.8% (p < 0.05). The observation of changes in sensory action potential amplitudes in the peroneal nerve is the most important element of our scoring system., Conclusions: A new electroneurography scoring system of DSPN severity should be based on sensory and motor action potential amplitudes that reflect axonal loss in the examined nerves and the nature of the disease.

25. Iron uptake pathway of Escherichia coli as an entry route for peptide nucleic acids conjugated with a siderophore mimic.

Abstract

Bacteria secrete various iron-chelators (siderophores), which scavenge Fe 3+ from the environment, bind it with high affinity, and retrieve it inside the cell. After the Fe 3+ uptake, bacteria extract the soluble iron(II) from the siderophore. Ferric siderophores are transported inside the cell via the TonB-dependent receptor system. Importantly, siderophore uptake paths have been also used by sideromycins, natural antibiotics. Our goal is to hijack the transport system for hydroxamate-type siderophores to deliver peptide nucleic acid oligomers into Escherichia coli cells. As siderophore mimics we designed and synthesized linear and cyclic N δ -acetyl-N δ -hydroxy-l-ornithine based peptides. Using circular dichroism spectroscopy, we found that iron(III) is coordinated by the linear trimer with hydroxamate groups but not by the cyclic peptide. The internal flexibility of the linear siderophore oxygen atoms and their interactions with Fe 3+ were confirmed by all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. Using flow cytometry we found that the designed hydroxamate trimer transports PNA oligomers inside the E. coli cells. Growth recovery assays on various E. coli mutants suggest the pathway of this transport through the FhuE outer-membrane receptor, which is responsible for the uptake of the natural iron chelator, ferric-coprogen. This pathway also involves the FhuD periplasmic binding protein. Docking of the siderophores to the FhuE and FhuD receptor structures showed that binding of the hydroxamate trimer is energetically favorable corroborating the experimentally suggested uptake path. 26. Characterization of Hot-Applied Joint Sealants and Their Components in Terms of Their Chemical Composition and Basic Performance Properties.

Abstract

Hot- and cold-applied joint sealants are materials commonly used for the surface repairs of the upper layers of asphalt or concrete road surfaces. Our investigations covered six hot-applied joint sealants, classified as the high-extension type N1 (elastic) or low-extension type N2 (normal), in accordance with the standard EN 14188-1; the sealants were obtained commercially from four European manufacturers. The present paper focuses on the characterization of the consistency of the joint sealants, the bituminous binders that contain them, and the characterization of their insoluble components. Additional testing methods included an FTIR analysis of the sealants and the extracted binders, as well as SEM, EDS, and sieving analyses of the insoluble material. Joint sealants are complex formulations and include a broad range of base asphalt binders and other components. Their compositions may vary widely, while still fulfilling the performance specifications. Through the extraction of the solvents and the separation of the crack sealants, it was found that radically different compositions of crack sealants resulted in the comparatively similar performance of the tested material. The EDS and FTIR analysis methods provided insights into the composition of the crack sealants and the types of mineral materials used.

27. Effects of Ni/Co doping on structural and electronic properties of 122 and 112 families of Eu based iron pnictides.

Abstract

Superconductivity in high-temperature superconductors such as cuprates or iron pnictides is typically achieved by hole or electron doping and it is of great interest to understand how doping affects their properties leading to superconductivity. To study it we conducted Fe and As K edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on several electron doped compounds from the 112 and 122 family of Eu-based iron pnictides. XANES and EXAFS results confirm that dopants are located at expected sites. For both families we found an electron charge redistribution between As and Fe occurring with doping. The changes it caused are stronger in the 112 family and they are bigger at As sites, which indicates that doped charges are predominantly localized on the dopant site. However, the results obtained do not provide clues why Ni doping in 122 family does not lead to occurrence of superconductivity., (© 2023. Springer Nature Limited.)

Abstract

Various neurological manifestations are observed in about 36.4% of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 and post-COVID neuropathy is one of them. There is lack of studies describing neurophysiological abnormalities in peripheral nerves in case of patients who had SARS-CoV-2 infection. The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in peripheral nervous system in case of COVID-19 survivors. In the presented study, 45 COVID-19 survivors who had nerve conduction study (NCS) were involved. Results were compared with control group consisting of healthy patients who had nerve conduction study before the COVID-19 pandemic. In our study group, neurophysiological abnormalities were present in the case of both sensory and motor nerve fibers. The most significant reduction of NCS parameters was observed in the case of sensory action potential amplitude of sural nerve. Moreover, that correlation was the most significant in the case of amplitude and conduction velocity in sensory and motor neuron fibers both in arms and legs. Those abnormalities were observed even 6 mo after COVID-19. Further investigation needs to be done regarding the polyneuropathies associated with human coronaviruses, and we should answer the question whether the virus directly damages peripheral nerves or factors mediating inflammatory response are responsible for the neural damage. Abstract

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, has forced all countries affected by it to introduce quarantine and isolation to prevent the spread of the virus, as well as masking and distancing. Not everyone is equally willing to follow the rules related to limit the extent of the coronavirus epidemic. This might be connected with personality traits, especially openness, positive attitude, and optimism. Materials and Methods : An online survey was created and completed by participants in April-May 2020. Self-assessment of personality traits and adherence to lockdown recommendations were assessed. A total of 7404 participants took part in the study, mainly from Poland (83.6%) and Italy (12.7%). Univariate and multivariate regression analysis was performed. Results: The participants were divided into groups depending on the degree of compliance with the lockdown rules. In the multivariate analysis, variables that increased the odds for stricter lockdown compliance were temporary work suspension OR 1.27 (95% CI 1.10-1.48), income level "we can't handle this situation" OR 1.67 (95%CI 1.20-2.33), and junior high school education OR 1.68 (95% CI 1.13-2.50). Other significant factors included age and place of residence. Each point of self-assessed sociability OR 1.07 (95% CI 1.00-1.13) also increased the likelihood of adhering to lockdown rules. Conclusions: Taking the basic demographic characteristics as well as working and health environment conditions traits into account may be helpful when forecasting epidemiological compliance during a pandemic, as well as in other public health tasks. The key role of self-assessed personality traits was not confirmed in this study. Reliability of the results is limited by significant disproportions in the size of the study groups.

30. Using Reclaimed Cement Concrete in Pavement Base Mixes with Foamed Bitumen Produced in Cold Recycling Technology.

Abstract

The paper presents the results of exploratory research on the use of reclaimed cement concrete in cold-recycled mixes with foamed bitumen. Because reclaimed cement concrete, unlike natural aggregates, is expected to have a residue of the non-hydrated cement covering the aggregate grains, which may result in a secondary cementation process after its application in a road base, this avenue was explored by tracking the time evolution of the compressive strength of the final material. The tests were performed using two mixtures, i.e., a reference mixture and a mixture containing 25% reclaimed cement concrete. The mixtures containing reclaimed cement concrete were characterized by increased uniaxial compressive strengths after each curing period (3, 4, 7, 14 and 28 days)-by 11.5 kPa on average and e.g., 498 kPa vs. 506 kPa after 28 days. The obtained differences between the mixtures were not found to be statistically significant. The small effects of the incorporation of reclaimed cement concrete were attributed to the time passed typically between the demolition and new pavement construction and to the presence of a second binding material-bitumen.

Abstract

In this work we present an automated approach to allergy recognition based on neural networks. Allergic reaction classification is an important task in modern medicine. Currently it is done by humans, which has obvious drawbacks, such as subjectivity in the process. We propose an automated method to classify prick allergic reactions using correlated visible-spectrum and thermal images of a patient's forearm. We test our model on a real-life dataset of 100 patients (1584 separate allergen injections). Our solution yields good results-0.98 ROC AUC; 0.97 AP; 93.6% accuracy. Additionally, we present a method to segment separate allergen injection areas from the image of the patient's forearm (multiple injections per forearm). The proposed approach can possibly reduce the time of an examination, while taking into consideration more information than possible by human staff., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

32. Analysis of the Effect of Photo and Hydrodegradation on the Surface Morphology and Mechanical Properties of Composites Based on PLA and PHI Modified with Natural Particles.

Abstract

Biodegradable polymer materials are increasingly used in the packaging industry due to their good properties and low environmental impact. Therefore, the work was performed on the injection molding of the bio-based composites of polylactide (PLA) and polyhydroxyalcanates (PHI) modified with two phases: reinforcing (walnut shell flour and cellulose) and coloring (beta carotene and anthocyanin). The produced materials were subjected to wide mechanical characteristics-tensile, flexural, and fatigue tests. Additionally, the influence of photo and hydrodegradation on the change of the surface structure and mechanical properties of the composites was assessed. The addition of natural fillers contributed to the improvement of the stiffness of the tested composites. PHI composites withstood a higher number of cycles during cyclic loading, but the stress values obtained in the static tensile test were higher for PLA composites. Moreover, a clear change of color was observed after both the photo and hydrodegradation process for all tested materials; however, after the degradation processes, the filler-modified materials underwent greater discoloration. For the composites based on PHI, the type of degradation did not affect the mechanical properties. On the other hand, for PLA composites, hydrolytic degradation contributed to a higher decrease in properties-the decrease in tensile strength for unmodified PLA after photodegradation was 4%, while after hydrodegradation it was 24%.

33. Surface Properties and Morphology of Boron Carbide Nanopowders Obtained by Lyophilization of Saccharide Precursors.

Abstract

The powders of boron carbide are usually synthesized by the carbothermal reduction of boron oxide. As an alternative to high-temperature reactions, the development of the carbothermal reduction of organic precursors to produce B 4 C is receiving considerable interest. The aim of this work was to compare two methods of preparing different saccharide precursors mixed with boric acid with a molar ratio of boron to carbon of 1:9 for the synthesis of B 4 C. In the first method, aqueous solutions of saccharides and boric acid were dried overnight at 90 °C and pyrolyzed at 850 °C for 1 h under argon flow. In the second method, aqueous solutions of different saccharides and boric acid were freeze-dried and prepared in the same way as in the first method. Precursors from both methods were heat-treated at temperatures of 1300 to 1700 °C. The amount of boron carbide in the powders depends on the saccharides, the temperature of synthesis, and the method of precursor preparation.

Abstract

Proprioception, or kinesthesia, is the sense of orientation responsible for perception of body and relative position of its parts. Kinaesthesia is received by receptors located in muscles and tendons. In this study a set of proprioception developing exercises was presented. Proprioception should be restored in case of musculoskeletal and neurological disorders. Proprioception training can also be used as a prophylaxis before starting various sporting activities. Proprioception developing exercises have significant meaning for the elderly, who are at risk of balance disorders. These exercises help developing motor memory and at the same time protect from falls.

Abstract

Background: IL-6 is strongly implicated in the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). IL-13 is the well-documented central mediator in allergic asthma. IL-6 is attributed to the proinflammatory activities in COPD as well as asthma. In COPD patients exacerbation is increased by serum IL-6. The association of IL-13 as well as IL-6 with the impaired respiratory function of asthma patients remains controversial., Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the concentration of IL-6 and IL-13 in the induced sputum of asthma and COPD patients, and to assess the possible association of these cytokines with the impairment of lung function., Methods: Twenty-six subjects with COPD and 18 subjects with asthma were enrolled in this study. IL-6 and IL-13 levels were measured in induced sputum by ELISA and correlated with the results of respiratory tests., Results: The induced sputum of COPD patients had a significantly higher IL-6 level than the sputum of asthma subjects while no significant differences were found in the levels of IL-13. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between IL-6 level and FEV(1) or FEV(1)/FVC in asthma patients (r = -0.59 and -0.54, respectively) and a negative correlation that did not reach statistical significance between IL-6 level and FEV(1), FEV(1)% or FVC in COPD subjects (r = -0.30, -0.30 and -0.38, respectively). There was no relationship between concentrations of IL-13 and impaired respiratory function., Conclusions: Our results confirmed that IL-6, but not of IL-13, is associated with respiratory disorders in both asthma and COPD patients., (Copyright © 2012 S.
