Contaminated sediments, poor water quality, and lost or altered habitat in Lower Green Bay and Fox River in the 1980s led to its listing as an Area of Concern by the International Joint Commission. Previous studies on the geophysics and health of the bay demonstrated the need for estimates of transport timescales. Such estimates can contribute to improved understanding of the transport and fate of nutrients, contaminants, and biogeochemical processes in the bay. This study reviews definitions of residence time and flushing time, estimates the temporal distribution of flushing time, the spatial and temporal distributions of residence time, and horizontal diffusivities. The study used a previously developed hydrodynamic model, a drifter experiment, a lake particle transport model, and methods appropriate for the estimation of transport timescales. The estimated residence time for lower Green Bay, 56 ± 16 days, is smaller than a previous estimate of 190 days for the whole bay, and had values similar to the estimated flushing times. The closeness between those timescales demonstrates the important role of water exchange across the Chambers Island transect. Flushing time and residence time do not follow the same trends in monthly variability because the former depends directly on water exchange across Chambers Island, while the later depends, in addition, on tributary inflows and the circulation patterns in the bay. The study includes a discussion of the relations between the timescales of transport and the previous studies of biogeochemical processes, such as trophic conditions, spatial distribution of cyanobacteria, cold-water intrusions, and hypoxia.

Sediment cores collected from several stations throughout Lake Baikal in water depths from 100 m off the Selenga River delta to the deepest basin of the lake (~1640 m), have been analyzed for sedimentary organic carbon, nitrogen, and the remineralized components in pore water. The organic carbon content of surface sediments generally varied from 2.3 to 3.2% by weight, and profiles typically showed an exponential decrease in both organic carbon and nitrogen in the upper 20–30 cm of the sediment column. Steady state models of organic matter diagenesis yield first order decomposition rate constants which range from 0.0009 to 0.022 y−1. The calculated residence times for the metabolizable fraction of the organic matter in these sediments increases roughly with increasing water depth and is on the order of 50–300 years. Pore water concentration profiles were determined for dissolved inorganic carbon, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), methane, and dissolved ammonium. At depth (25–30 cm) methane concentrations ranged from 50 to 800 μmol Lpw−1 and DOC from 400 to 900 μmol Lpw−1. Oxygen depletion in bottom waters of lakes and coastal regions is expanding worldwide. To examine the causes of hypoxia, we quantified the drivers of benthic oxygen uptake in Green Bay, Lake Michigan, USA, using 2 techniques, aquatic eddy covariance and sediment core incubation. We investigated benthic oxygen uptake along a gradient in C deposition, including shallow water near the riverine source of eutrophication and deeper waters of lower Green Bay where high net sediment deposition occurs. Time-averaged eddy covariance oxygen uptake was high near the source of eutrophication (11.5 mmol m−2 d−1) and at the shallower of the high deposition sites (9.8 mmol m−2 d−1). The eddy covariance technique revealed a decrease in benthic oxygen uptake with depth at the high deposition sites. These patterns were consistent with benthic uptake being driven by the deposition of autochthonous production. Additionally, eddy covariance revealed a nearly proportional relationship between benthic oxygen uptake and current velocity at all sites. Specifically, because of the lake seiche, water velocity typically varied 3× at a site and caused a 3× variation in benthic oxygen uptake. A summer storm also doubled bottom-water velocities and caused a further doubling of uptake to 28 mmol m−2 d−1. This high sensitivity of benthic oxygen uptake to seiche-driven water velocities indicates that redox conditions in surficial cohesive sediments are highly dynamic.

The Green Bay watershed, draining a total area of approximately 40,468 km2, comprises about a third of the Lake Michigan drainage. In the early years, fur trade was the dominant economic activity within the watershed. Later, when timber harvesting, papermaking, and agriculture came on the scene in the 19th and early 20th centuries, major environmental changes occurred in a relatively short period of time. Nutrient and sediment loadings, accompanied by organic wastes from sawmills and paper mills, resulted in a pollutant overload in the Fox River and in the eutrophication of the waters of lower Green Bay. Citizen complaints about these severely degraded conditions initiated a period of scientific investigation. Starting slowly with a few studies and surveys in the first half of the 20th century, serious investigatory work began at mid-century with support from the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute. Examples of topics that have been investigated since then with support from numerous sources are: biological oxygen demand (BOD), phosphorus and total suspended solids loads, trophic status and food chain efficiencies, coastal wetland characterization, dynamics of the benthic layer, algae and abiotic solids, phosphorus cycling and mass balance, PCBs, seasonal hypoxia, and climate change impacts. These studies have provided the scientific foundation for government-led programs such as the Green Bay Remedial Action Program, the PCB clean-up program, and the TMDL program. Progress has been made—reduction in BOD is an example—but a fuller rehabilitation of this large-scale ecosystem remains an elusive goal. The saga goes on.

We present water column thermal structure for two climatically different years: 2012, which experienced abnormally warm spring and summer air temperatures preceded by a relatively low ice winter and 2013, which experienced cooler than average spring and average summer air temperatures and preceded by average ice conditions. Mean bottom water temperatures for the season and during cold water intrusions were significantly warmer in 2012 than 2013 leading to a significantly reduced stratified season in 2012. Cold water intrusions were driven into southern Green Bay by southerly winds while intrusions were terminated when winds switched to persistent northerly winds. 2012 observed a significant increase in northerly winds relative to 2013, decreasing cold water intrusion presence and duration but winds did not fully explain the difference in thermal conditions for southern Green Bay. These cold bottom waters drive stratification in polymictic southern Green Bay while dimictic waters were found to have significantly warmer bottom temperatures during 2012 and a deeper mixed layer. Green Bay has sometimes been referred to as the largest freshwater “estuary” in the world. Its watershed, much of it in intensive agriculture, comprises one-third of the Lake Michigan basin and delivers one-third of the lake's total phosphorus load. At one time, the major tributary, the Fox River, was considered the most heavily industrialized river in North America, primarily from paper manufacturing. Deterioration in water quality and the loss of beneficial and ecological uses have been extensive and began well back into the last century. More recently, the bay has also become a test case for our resolve to remediate and restore ecosystems throughout the Great Lakes and elsewhere. Green Bay has stimulated a significant amount of widely relevant research on the fate and behavior of toxics, biogeochemistry, habitat, biodiversity, and ecological processes. The bay represents a true “proving ground” for adaptive restoration. Key findings of the recent summit on the Ecological and Socio-Economic Tradeoffs of Restoration in the Green Bay Ecosystem are summarized here. Foremost among recommendations of the workshop was the creation of a “Green Bay Ecosystem Simulation and Data Consortium” serving as a data clearing house, building upon the significant progress to date, and developing a modeling framework and visualization tools, furthering public outreach efforts, and ensuring a sustained growth in scientific expertise. Funding was estimated to be on the order of ~$15–20M over the next ~5 years – a modest investment relative to the value of the ecosystem and the long-term cost of inaction.

The last historic Hexagenia specimen in lower Green Bay was officially recorded in 1955. Field surveys and Hexagenia viability studies were completed to determine if lower Green Bay could support Hexagenia re-ecesis and where in the bay egg stocking could best be accomplished. The invertebrate field data were compared with historical population data based on earlier published studies in the 1950s, 1970s and 1990s to determine the bay's ecological trajectory to better understand the re-ecesis success potential of Hexagenia. No native Hexagenia were observed during this study. Deep water invertebrate diversity within the upper lower bay appears to be improving, whereas the diversity along the lower mid-bay may be deteriorating. Shallower, nearshore samples indicated a better condition with Caenis mayflies sparsely present, amphipods, isopods, gilled snails, odonates, oligochaetes, chironomids, and meiofauna present. These results suggested improved conditions shoreward versus degraded conditions deeper. Hexagenia egg viability and neonate growth indicated Hexagenia could successfully inhabit in situ Green Bay nearshore (

In nearly every instance in which the environment has been sampled on a higher resolution in time or space, fundamental processes have come to light that were previously undetected or unobserved. In this study, an autonomous dissolved phosphate sensor was deployed at the Entrance Light station in lower Green Bay, Lake Michigan in 2012 and 2013. Hourly phosphate sensor measurements were compared with other real time sensor data to gain insights into the processes occurring at this site. Results showed that the water column at this location undergoes repeated stratification and turnover during the course of the summer. Often, the stratification results from intrusions of cold hypolimnetic bottom water from the north, while turnover is associated with significant northerly and/or easterly wind events. It was observed that, during calm periods, dissolved phosphate concentrations increased at a rate that was stoichiometrically consistent with the consumption of dissolved oxygen during the remineralization of organic matter; specifically, areal oxygen consumption rates ranged from 3.2 to 43 mmol m−2 d−1 and oxygen to phosphate ratios ranged from 120 to 210. At other times, the inverse relationship between dissolved oxygen and dissolved phosphate was not stoichiometrically linked; during these times, areal oxygen depletion rates ranged from 51 to 240 mmol m−2 d−1 and oxygen to phosphate ratios ranged from 260 to 2300. Future strategic deployment of multiple in situ dissolved phosphate and other nutrient sensors will enhance the understanding of nutrient cycling in this important aquatic system.

Water, suspended-particles, and surface-sediment samples were collected from Green Bay, Lake Michigan, for the measurements of phosphorus (P) species, including dissolved/particulate-P, inorganic/organic-P, and five different forms of particulate-P, namely exchangeable- or labile-P (Ex-P), iron-bound-P (Fe-P), biogenic-apatite and/or CaCO3-associated-P (CFA-P), organic-P (Org-P) and detrital-apatite-P (Detr-P) to elucidate their reactivity and transformation pathways in the water column. Suspended particles contained mainly Ex-P (25 ± 15%), Fe-P (28 ± 12%) and Org-P (29 ± 7%). In contrast, Detr-P (34 ± 10%) and Org-P (36 ± 12%) were the predominant P species in surface sediment. Contents of Ex-P, Fe-P, Org-P and CFA-P decreased consistently from suspended-particles to surface-sediment, but an increase was observed for the Detr-P, indicating a net loss of Ex-P, Fe-P, Org-P and CFA-P from particulate into dissolved phase. Such active regeneration of P in the water column between particulate and dissolved phases may serve as an internal phosphate source in Green Bay, especially under hypoxic conditions. Degradation of organic matter in south central bay areas seemed to promote hypoxia and enhance the reductive-dissolution of Fe-P and preservation of Org-P under low-oxygen conditions in the central bay. Overall, Ex-P, Fe-P, CFA-P and Org-P species, which comprised up to 50–90% of total particulate-P, can be collectively considered as potentially-bioavailable-P (BAP). Under low-phosphate (0.022 ± 0.014 μM in Green Bay) and summer low-oxygen/hypoxic conditions, suspended-particles may release up to 71% of their BAP before deposited in sediment although the BAP regeneration decreased along the south-north transect in Green Bay.

The Laurentian Great Lakes (LGL) constitute one of the largest freshwater systems in the world while providing social and economic value to two powerful nations. The spatial scale of these inland seas falls between two endpoints: small lakes and oceans. Lacustrine in many characteristics, the LGL often require a scientific approach with attributes similar to those of oceanography. There is a strong sense that within the LGL support for scientific research has not kept pace with the need for process-oriented research and that we lack basic information needed to forecast change, mitigate impacts and restore and preserve the LGL. Consequently, 58 researchers met in September 2014 and identified five “Grand Challenges for Research in the LGL”: (1) How has this vast inland freshwater system responded to shifting climate in the past, and how will it respond in the future? (2) What is the current status of the most important ecosystem processes, including their variability in space and time? (3) What processes are characteristic only of large lakes, and how do the distinct habitats integrate into a whole? (4) What are the ecosystem responses to major anthropogenic forces such as nutrients and invasive species, and are these reversible? and (5) What are the small to large-scale linkages and feedbacks among societal decisions, biological systems, and physicochemical dynamics? An urgent need exists for a unified scientific voice that articulates the Grand Challenges for research in the LGL and the need for associated funding. This treatise describing the Grand Challenges develops that voice.

Water movement can influence the distribution of benthos, in part, by increasing food delivery; however, the impact of advective transport and turbulent diffusion on organic matter flux to nearshore benthic communities is not well quantified. In this study, we measured the vertical particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate phosphorus (PP) flux in nearshore Lake Michigan using two naturally occurring daughter/parent radionuclide pairs (234Th/238U and 90Y/90Sr) and compared these fluxes to coincident benthic chamber estimates of respiration and total phosphorus efflux by quagga mussels on the lakebed. We found that advective onshore transport and vertical convective mixing increased POC and PP flux to the nearshore benthos by a factor of ∼ 15 and ∼ 30 over offshore trap‐derived estimates of flux. From these results, we hypothesize that high benthos population densities are related to an edge effect created when the dominant mechanism of particle delivery transitions from gravitational settling to convection.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) are a growing problem in freshwater systems worldwide. CyanoHABs are well documented in Green Bay, Lake Michigan but little is known about cyanoHAB toxicity. This study characterized the diversity and spatial distribution of toxic or otherwise bioactive cyanobacterial peptides (TBPs) in Green Bay. Samples were collected in 2014 and 2015 during three cruises at sites spanning the mouth of the Fox River north to Chambers Island. Nineteen TBPs were analyzed including 11 microcystin (MC) variants, nodularin, three anabaenopeptins, three cyanopeptolins and microginin-690. Of the 19 TBPs, 12 were detected in at least one sample, and 94% of samples had detectable TBPs. The most prevalent TBPs were MCRR and MCLR, present in 94% and 65% of samples. The mean concentration of all TBPs was highest in the Fox River and lower bay, however, the maximum concentration of all TBPs occurred in the same sample north of the lower bay. MCs were positively correlated with chlorophyll and negatively correlated with distance to the Fox River in all cruises along a well-established south-to-north trophic gradient in Green Bay. The mean concentration of MC in the lower bay across all cruises was 3.0 +/- 2.3 μg/L. Cyanopeptolins and anabaenopeptins did not trend with the south-north trophic gradient or varied by cruise suggesting their occurrence is driven by different environmental factors. Results from this study provides evidence that trends in TBP concentration differ by congener type over a trophic gradient.

Quantifying rates of primary production and respiration is fundamental to understanding ecosystem function. This study utilized high-frequency time series, buoy-based sensor data to estimate daily primary production and respiration rates during the summers of 2012–2015 in southern Green Bay, Lake Michigan. Highly coherent diel oscillations of dissolved oxygen concentrations in epilimnetic waters were commonly observed for much of the summer via 30-min time intervals from the GLOS buoy (NOAA 45014) sensor array. Corrections for air–sea exchange based upon wind speed-derived gas exchange coefficients and saturation state, when combined with mixing depth, allow calculation of daytime net oxygen production and nighttime respiration. Thermistor string observations at 1-m intervals over the 13 m water depth showed the onset of thermal stratification, development of the thermocline, and occasional mixing events. For the summers of 2014 and 2015, during which a nearly continuous sensor record exists, gross primary production (GPP) and respiration (R) were estimated to be 342 ± 117 and 318 ± 83 mmol O2 m− 2 day−1 for GPP and − 325 ± 120 and − 306 ± 66 mmol O2 m− 2 day−1 for R, respectively. These results indicate that during most of the summer, southern Green Bay tends towards net autotrophy with production on average exceeding respiration by 9 ± 6% (SD). Cumulative net ecosystem production from June through September was estimated to be 3.2 and 1.3 mol C m− 2 in 2014 (118 days) and 2015 (113 days), respectively, and is sufficient to drive a significant portion of benthic respiration, the principal cause of seasonal bottom water hypoxia.

Increased sea level is the climate change effect expected to have the greatest impact on mangrove forest survival. Mangroves have survived extreme fluctuations in sea level in the past through sedimentation and belowground carbon (C) accumulation, yet it is unclear what factors may influence these two parameters. We measured sedimentation, vertical accretion, and belowground C accumulation rates in mangrove forests from the Republic of Palau and Vietnam to examine how diversity (high-Vietnam vs. low-Palau), land use, and location (fringe vs. interior) might influence these parameters. Land use in this study was identified as disturbance and restoration for all mangrove forests sampled in Palau and Vietnam, respectively. Summertime bottom water hypoxia has been a recurring water quality issue in Green Bay for decades. Evidence suggests that the magnitude and duration of hypoxia is highly variable from year to year, despite the fact that nutrient loading has been relatively constant for at least 20 years. The bay's size, orientation, and morphology (~ 20 × 200 km) with high riverine inflow and restricted mixing at the southern end, combined with extensive water mass exchange with Lake Michigan at the northern end, results in a changing hydrodynamic structure that plays a key role in the set up and persistence of stratification that leads to hypoxic conditions. Using both observed and modeled data, this study represents the first attempt to examine the spatial and temporal characteristics of the interactions among the atmospheric heat flux across the water surface, the advective heat flux driven by the circulation, and the intrusion of cold Lake Michigan bottom water into the hypolimnion. With the onset of positive solar heat fluxes in April, stratification generally exists continuously between late June and early September in regions deeper than 15–20 m, and develops discontinuously at depths less than 15 m. Critical improvements in developing realistic simulations of stratification in the bay were obtained via consideration of water clarity conditions that impact heat adsorption and varying default parameters, particularly in the vertical diffusivity, in the Lake Michigan model framework.

The nature and distribution of lipid biomarkers (n-alkanes, n-alkanols, sterols and triterpenols) were investigated in five dated sediment cores from the Pichavaram mangrove–estuarine complex in order to: 1) identify the organic matter (OM) sources and its preservation and 2) trace recent changes associated with coastal processes and anthropogenic activities. The mangrove sediment extracts have higher biomarker concentration (22.6 ± 13.3 μg/g dry weight) than the estuarine extracts (6.42 ± 4.92 μg/g dry weight). Triterpenols are dominant biomarkers in both estuarine and mangrove sediments, and constitute > 50% of the total lipid extracts. The presence of n-alkanols (n-C26,28,30) and abundance of phytosterols (stigmasterol and β-sitosterol) and triterpenols (taraxerol, β-amyrin, germanicol, and lupeol) indicate that mangrove vegetation is the primary source of sedimentary OM. The high abundance and unimodal distribution of the long-chain n-alkanes (mainly n-C25,27,29), and high values of Terrestrial Aquatic Ratio (TAR 2.4 to 41) and Carbon Preference Index (CPI > 8) indicate dominance (and better preservation) of higher plant derived immature OM in mangrove sediments. In contrast, the weak dominance of high molecular weight n-alkanes, low CPI (0.75 to 0.90) and TAR (1.9 to 5.7) values, and the presence of high C27 and C28 sterols indicate that phytoplankton/algal derived OM is more pronounced in estuarine sediments. Diagenetic changes in sedimentary OM indicate that some of the lipid fractions are reactive, and as a result, they degrade more rapidly than bulk OM. These compounds follow first order decay kinetics, and concur with the downcore diagenetic changes in coastal areas. Resistance to degradation among the different lipid classes show the trend: n-alkane > sterol > triterpenol > n-alkanol. Finally, the study indicates that less freshwater discharge from the Coleroon River is causing a gradual change in mangrove vegetation. There is less input of OM derived from mangrove vegetation into recent sediments. Biomarker trends also indicate that less salt tolerant Rhizophora spp. are gradually replaced by more salt tolerant vegetation consisting of Sueda spp. and Aviccenia spp.

Spatial and temporal distribution of trace metals and their cycling is a key issue for understanding the ongoing biogeochemical processes in coastal environments. Sediment cores were collected from six different sampling locations from the Rufiji delta mangrove forests in southeastern coastal Tanzania that are perceived to be impacted by urban development and agricultural activities in the catchment, and pollution in upstream sections of the Rufiji River. The chronology and sediment accumulation rates at these sampling sites were derived based on the distribution of Pb-210(excess) method. The trace metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were sequentially extracted as per the BCR method and analyzed. The results indicate that the mass accumulation rates range from 0.40 g cm(-2) year(-1) (cores NR3 and NR4) to 1.75 g cm(-2) year(-1) (core SR1). Trace metals in the cores are mainly associated with the residual phase and their abundances in sediments are ranked as Cr amp;gt; Zn amp;gt; Ni amp;gt; Cu amp;gt; Pb amp;gt; Cd. The results imply that trace metals in the Rufiji delta mangroves are mainly of crustal origin, and they are less sensitive to weathering. Further, these metals are least available for uptake by plants and they pose limited threat to the biota. Water quality impairment of Great Lakes beaches is caused by fecal pollution from point and nonpoint sources. Erosion due to wind or wave action, invasive vegetation and chronically wet, flooded or standing water are conditions that can magnify water quality problems at beaches. We investigated the hydrological and geophysical characteristics of the Bradford Beach on Lake Michigan (Milwaukee, WI) and the linkage between standing water and persistent contamination by fecal indicator bacteria (FIB). Our study showed that there is a positive correlation between high concentrations of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) in sand and high moisture content caused by standing water. The main factor associated with the formation of standing water was rainfall. There were also notable differences in standing water and/or wet sand conditions in the northern and southern parts of the beach. These differences could be accounted for by differences in ground water elevations and beach erosion and accretion patterns. Other important physical features of the beach were the presence of rain gardens and mean grain diameter (d 50 ). Rain gardens above the beach face that capture runoff contributed to transient increases in the water table, facilitating standing water formation. Standing water, stormwater runoff infiltrating through the sand and into groundwater as well as wave run up that delivered contaminated surface water to the back beach area were of health concern following heavy rainfall events. The outcomes of this study will likely be useful to beach managers investigating mechanisms/sources of fecal indicator bacteria loading and potential mitigative approaches.

[1] The horizontal and vertical flux of particulate material in the nearshore of southern Lake Michigan (0–40 m) was estimated with the naturally occurring radionuclide 234Th. Horizontal fluxes of 234Th supplemented apparent vertical fluxes of 234Th in the water column (based on local 234Th/238U disequilibria) by a factor of 7–14, reinforcing the importance of lateral transport in coastal environments. Calculated onshore transport of particulate material across the 40 m isobath was as high as 1.1 × 106 kg km−1 d−1, and exceeds estimates of terrigenous (riverine and bluff erosion) loading. Estimates of onshore flux of organic carbon exceeded areal primary productivity by as much as ∼300%, and should be considered in nearshore carbon budgets. Bottom-tethered sediment traps (placed 5 m above the bottom) measured sedimentation rates that were ∼1 order of magnitude lower than 234Th derived mass fluxes from the water column and ∼2 orders of magnitude lower than 234Th derived mass fluxes to the lakebed. We ascribe this difference to under collecting by the sediment trap either because of trap hydrodynamics or flux occurring below the trap capture plane. Cross-shore fluxes showed a periodicity of ∼4 days and correlated strongly with a topographic vorticity wave that is present throughout the year in southern Lake Michigan. The impact of this wave (as a driver of bidirectional cross-shore flux) on biogeochemical cycling and both nearshore and offshore food webs has not yet been explicitly considered.

Lake Huron’s submerged sinkhole habitats are impacted by high-conductivity groundwater that allows photosynthetic cyanobacterial mats to form over thick, carbon-rich sediments. To better understand nutrient cycling in these habitats, we measured the stable isotopic content of carbon and nitrogen in organic and inorganic carbon pools in Middle Island sinkhole, a ~23 m deep feature influenced by both groundwater and overlying lake water. Two distinct sources of dissolved CO2 (DIC) were available to primary producers. Lake water DIC (δ 13C = −0.1 ‰) differed by +5.9 ‰ from groundwater DIC (δ 13C = −6.0 ‰). Organic carbon fixed by primary producers reflected the two DIC sources. Phytoplankton utilizing lake water DIC were more enriched in 13C (δ 13C = −22.2 to −23.2 ‰) than mat cyanobacteria utilizing groundwater DIC (δ 13C = −26.3 to −30.0 ‰). Sinkhole sediments displayed an isotopic signature (δ 13C = −23.1 ‰) more similar to sedimenting phytoplankton than the cyanobacterial mat. Corroborated by sediment C/N ratios, these data suggest that the carbon deposited in sinkhole sediments originates primarily from planktonic rather than benthic sources. 210Pb/137Cs radiodating suggests rapid sediment accumulation and sub-bottom imaging indicated a massive deposit of organic carbon beneath the sediment surface. We conclude that submerged sinkholes may therefore act as nutrient sinks within the larger lake ecosystem.

The physical processes that drive the circulation and the thermal regime in the bay largely control the duration and persistence of hypoxic conditions in Green Bay. A review of previous studies, existing field data, our own measurements, hydrodynamic modeling, and spectral analyses were used to investigate the effects on the circulation and the thermal regime of the bay by the momentum flux generated by wind, the heat flux across the water surface, the Earth’s rotation, thermal stratification and the topography of the basin. Stratification and circulation are intimately coupled during the summer. Field data show that continuous stratification developed at regions deeper than 15–20 m between late June and September and that surface heat flux is the main driver of stratification. Summertime conditions are initiated by a transition in the dominant wind field shifting from the NE to the SW in late June and remain in a relatively stable state until bay vertical mixing in early September. It is during this stable period that conditions conducive to hypoxia are present. Wind parallel to the axis of the bay induces greater water exchange than wind blowing across the bay. During the stratified season flows in the bottom layers bring cold water from Lake Michigan to Green Bay and surface flows carry warmer water from the bay to Lake Michigan. Knowledge of the general patterns of the circulation and the thermal structure and their variability will be essential in producing longer term projections of future water quality in response to system scale changes.

Green Bay, Lake Michigan, USA, is the largest freshwater estuary in the Laurentian Great Lakes and receives disproportional terrestrial inputs as a result of a high watershed to bay surface area ratio. While seasonal hypoxia and the formation of "dead zones" in Green Bay have received increasing attention, there are no systematic studies on the dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its linkage to the development of hypoxia. During summer 2014, bulk dissolved organic carbon (DOC) analysis, UV-vis spectroscopy, and fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) coupled with PARAFAC analysis were used to quantify the abundance, composition and source of DOM and their spatiotemporal variations in Green Bay, Lake Michigan. Concentrations of DOC ranged from 202 to 571μM-C (average=361±73μM-C) in June and from 279 to 610μM-C (average=349±64μM-C) in August. In both months, absorption coefficient at 254nm (a254) was strongly correlated to bulk DOC and was most abundant in the Fox River, attesting a dominant terrestrial input. Non-chromophoric DOC comprised, on average, ~32% of bulk DOC in June with higher terrestrial DOM and ~47% in August with higher aquagenic DOM, indicating that autochthonous and more degraded DOM is of lower optical activity. PARAFAC modeling on EEM data resulted in four major fluorescent DOM components, including two terrestrial humic-like, one aquagenic humic-like, and one protein-like component. Variations in the abundance of DOM components further supported changes in DOM sources. Mixing behavior of DOM components also indicated that while bulk DOM behaved quasi-conservatively, significant compositional changes occurred during transport from the Fox River to the open bay.

The release of fecal pollution into surface waters may create environmental reservoirs of feces-derived microorganisms, including pathogens. Clostridium perfringens is a commonly used fecal indicator that represents a human pathogen. The pathogenicity of this bacterium is associated with its expression of multiple toxins; however, the prevalence of C. perfringens with various toxin genes in aquatic environments is not well characterized. In this study, C. perfringens spores were used to measure the distribution of fecal pollution associated with suspended sediments in the nearshore waters of Lake Michigan. Particle-associated C. perfringens levels were greatest adjacent to the Milwaukee harbor and diminished in the nearshore waters. Species-specific PCR and toxin gene profiles identified 174 isolates collected from the suspended sediments, surface water, and sewage influent as C. perfringens type A. Regardless of the isolation source, the beta2 and enterotoxin genes were common among isolates. The suspended sediments yielded the highest frequency of cpe -carrying C. perfringens (61%) compared to sewage (38%). Gene arrangement of enterotoxin was investigated using PCR to target known insertion sequences associated with this gene. Amplification products were detected in only 9 of 90 strains, which suggests there is greater variability in cpe gene arrangement than previously described. This work presents evidence that freshwater suspended sediments and sewage influent are reservoirs for potentially pathogenic cpe -carrying C. perfringens spores.

Green Bay, while representing only ~7% of the surface area and ~1.4% of the volume of Lake Michigan, contains one-third of the watershed of the lake, and receives approximately one-third of the total nutrient loading to the Lake Michigan basin, largely from the Fox River at the southern end of the bay. With a history of eutrophic conditions dating back nearly a century, the southern portion of the bay behaves as an efficient nutrient and sediment trap, sequestering much of the annual carbon and nitrogen input within sediments accumulating at up to 1 cm per year. Depositional fluxes of organic matter varied from ~0.1 mol C m22 yr21 to >10 mol C m−2 yr−1 and were both fairly uniform in stoichiometric composition and relatively labile. Estimates of benthic recycling derived from pore-water concentration gradients, whole-sediment incubation experiments, and deposition-burial models of early diagenesis yielded an estimated 40% of the carbon and 50% of the nitrogen recycled back into the overlying water. Remineralization was relatively rapid with ~50% of the carbon remineralized within ~15 yr of deposition, and a mean residence time for metabolizable carbon and nitrogen in the sediments of 20 yr. On average, organic carbon regeneration occurred as 75% CO2, 15% CH4, and 10% dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Carbon and nitrogen budgets for the southern bay were based upon direct measurements of inputs and burial and upon estimates of export and production derived stoichiometrically from a coupled phosphorus budget. Loadings of organic carbon from rivers were ~3.7 mol m−2 yr−1, 80% in the form of DOC and 20% as particulate organic carbon. These inputs were lost through export to northern Green Bay and Lake Michigan (39%), through sediment burial (26%), and net CO2 release to the atmosphere (35%). Total carbon input, including new production, was 4.54 mol m−2 yr−1, equivalent to ~10% of the gross annual primary production. Nitrogen budget terms were less well quantified, with nitrogen export ~54% of total inputs and burial ~24%, leaving an unquantified residual loss term in the nitrogen budget of ~22%.

A low-cost self-contained underwater particle image velocimetry (UWPIV) system has been developed to measure small-scale turbulent flow structures in situ. The UWPIV employs a compact continuous-wave laser and an optical scanner to deliver a light sheet that illuminates naturally occurring particles. Particle images are taken by a CCD camera along with an ultra-compact PC. The nontethered and compact design can be fit in two small underwater housings with all components powered by batteries: an ideal design for a variety of in situ deployments. The system has been field-tested in the coastal zone of Lake Michigan. Turbulent flow structures of the wave-current bottom boundary layer are measured right above the nearshore lakebed, which is densely covered by quagga mussels (Dreissena bugensis). Vertical profiles of mean velocity, Reynolds stresses, dissipation rate of the turbulent kinetic energy, turbulent viscosity, plankton particle concentration, and the turbulent flux of particles are presented and discussed.

Zeekoevlei is the largest freshwater lake in South Africa and has been suffering from hyper-eutrophic conditions since last few decades. We have used total P (TP), dissolved phosphate (PO4 3−), organic P (OP), calcium (Ca) and iron (Fe) bound P fractions to investigate the relevant physical, chemical and biological processes responsible for sedimentation and retention of P and to study phosphorus (P) dynamics in this shallow lake. In addition, redox proxies (V/Cr and Th/U ratios) are used to study the prevailing redox conditions in sediments. Adsorption by CaCO3 and planktonic assimilation of P are found to control P sedimentation in Zeekoevlei. Low concentration of the labile OP fraction in surface sediments restricts the release of P by bacterial remineralisation. Low molar Ca/P and Fe/P ratios indicate low P retention capacity of sediments, and P is most likely released by desorption from wind-induced resuspended sediments and mixing of pore water with the overlying water column.

We used elemental carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and hydrogen ratios (C/N, N/P and H/C) with total organic carbon (TOC) and total phosphorus (TP) as well as stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) to investigate the source and depositional conditions of organic matter in sediments from Zeekoevlei, the largest freshwater lake in South Africa. Typical C/N (10–12), H/C ratios (≥1.7) and δ13Corganic values (−22 to −19‰) together with the increase in TOC concentration indicate elevated primary productivity in lower middle (18–22 cm) and top (0–8 cm) sections of the sediment cores. Seepage of nutrients from a nearby waste water treatment plant, rapid urbanization and heavily fertilized farming in the catchments are responsible for the increased productivity. Consistent with this, measured δ15Norganic values (∼11‰) indicate increased raw sewage input towards the top-section of the core. Although cyanobacterial blooms are evident from the low δ15N values (∼3‰) in mid-section of the core, they did not outnumber the phytoplankton population. Low N/P ratio (∼0) and high TP (100–2,200 mg l−1) support cyanobacterial growth under N limited condition, and insignificant input of macrophytes towards the organic matter pool. Dredging in 1983, caused sub-aerial exposure of the suspended and surface sediments, and affected organic matter preservation in the upper mid-section (12–14 cm) of the core.

Despite major investments in point source reductions, portions of the Great Lakes, like Green Bay, remain hypereutrophic and are subject to persistent seasonal hypoxia. Phosphorus (P) is generally a limiting nutrient in the Great Lakes ecosystem, but not all P species are equally bioavailable, and the dynamics of nutrients and their correlation to algal bloom remain poorly characterized, in part, due to a lack of adequate quantification of P chemical speciation. During summer 2014, water samples were collected from seasonally hypoxic Green Bay for measurements of dissolved and particulate inorganic and organic P to examine P cycling dynamics along a steep nutrient gradient ranging from Fox River inflow dominated eutrophic waters in the southern bay to mesotrophic northern waters near the bay's connection with open Lake Michigan. River-derived dissolved and particulate P was quickly removed from the water column in southern Green Bay through biological uptake and sedimentation. Concentrations of phosphate or dissolved inorganic P (DIP) dramatically decreased from 828 ± 216 nM in the Fox River, comprising 57 ± 1% of the total dissolved P, to 24 ± 9 nM in northern Green Bay where dissolved organic P (DOP) became predominant (>80%). Generally low phosphate concentrations and extremely high dissolved organic C/P ratios (2090 ± 1160 in August 2014) suggested high DOP turnover rates and active transformation between DOP and DIP through organic degradation during P-limited conditions in Green Bay. Elevated DIP levels were accompanied by low dissolved oxygen in deeper waters (10-15m) of central Green Bay where hypoxia-development occurred, suggesting the release of DIP through particle regeneration under hypoxic conditions enhanced by lateral transport and sediment resuspension. High partition coefficients (Kd) of both inorganic and organic P and their significant negative correlation with suspended particulate matter concentrations indicated the particle-reactive nature of P in freshwater environments and may imply that DOP could also be bioavailable under P-limitation.

The nearshore zone of western Lake Michigan is poorly characterized both in terms of its fine scale bathymetry and its lakebed characteristics. Difficulties in characterizing the lakebed of this region arise in part because of its patchiness as well as the fact that much of the lakebed is not amenable to conventional sediment sampling techniques. With this in mind, high precision bathymetry and the lakebed characteristics of ∼17.5 km2 of the nearshore of western Lake Michigan (near Oak Creek, WI) were mapped using multi-beam and single beam sonar in conjunction with lakebed characterization and surface mapping software. Lakebed features showing nearshore bluff erosion material, glacial scouring, and isolated ridges were revealed in a 1.0 × 1.5 meter resolution map of the survey area. A map of the bottom characteristics, meanwhile, showed a patchwork of four distinct bottom types (area %): mostly rock (12.8%), cobble and sand (21.0%), mostly sand (60.3%), and clay outcrops (5.9%). All predicted bottom types were shown to be accurately characterized by direct observation with an ROV.

Benthic macroinvertebrates were sampled in the summer of 1997 using a standard D frame kick net along a transect across the Peshtigo wetland, a river delta wetland on the coast of Green Bay, Lake Michigan, to describe the spatial and temporal dynamics of the invertebrate community. Various abiotic factors, including sedimentation rates determined from 210Pb and 137Cs as a proxy for delivery of riverine organic matter, were also measured to determine which factors influenced these dynamics. Significant decreasing gradients in dissolved oxygen and pH with distance from the river, coupled with trends in sedimentation rates, chloride, and sum nitrate (nitrate + nitrite), revealed that riverine water was mixing with wetland water up to 100 m from the wetland-river interface. Aboveground primary production and total invertebrate densities exhibited Weibull type distributions, with highest rates and numbers occurring 20 to 100 m from the Peshtigo River. Invertebrate densities were largely represented by Asellus sp. isopods (12–53%) and exhibited highest numbers in September. Invertebrate diversity at the genus level linearly decreased with distance from the river based on the Simpson's index of diversity (r2 = 0.60, p < 0.05) and the Shannon-Wiener function (r2 = 0.73, p < 0.01). Patterns observed suggest that there is an “optimal” zone for benthic invertebrates in the Peshtigo wetland 20 to 60 m from the Peshtigo River that is protected from high-energy events (e.g., storms, boating) in the Peshtigo wetland by a buffer zone (0 to 20 m) but is close enough to benefit from replenished levels of dissolved oxygen, nutrients, and organic matter delivered via the Peshtigo River.

Sediment pore water samples obtained from a 19 m station in Green Bay in Lake Michigan were examined for levels of ambient dissolved methane and copper, and for the potential for in situ methane oxidation by methanotrophs found within surface sediments. The in situ methane concentration in the upper oxic sediment layer ranged from 20–150 μmol · 1−1 at this station. The activity of methanotrophs and the kinetics of methane oxidation in these sediments were demonstrated by the uptake of radiolabeled methane. Ks values varied between 4.1–9.6 nmol · cm3 of sediment slurry. High Vmax values (12.7–35.2 nmol · cm−3 · h−1) suggest a large population of methanotrophs in the sediments. An average methane flux to the oxic sediments of 0.24 mol · m−2 · year−1 was calculated from the pore water methane gradients. Pore water concentrations of copper in the upper sediment layer ranged from 10–120 nmol · 1−1. Based upon the copper concentration, other measured parameters, and equilibrium conditions defined by WATEQF4, an estimate for dissolved free Cu2+ concentration of 5–38 nmol · 1−1 pore water was obtained. Several factors control the rate of methane oxidation, including oxygen, methane, and the bioavailability of free Cu2+.

The sources and historical deposition of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in dated sediment cores from the Pichavaram mangrove–estuarine complex. The ΣPAH flux in mangrove and estuarine sediments was 0.064 ± 0.031 μg/cm2/yr and 0.043 ± 0.020 μg/cm2/yr, respectively. The PAH flux in sediments increased up-core, coinciding with rapid urbanization since the 1970s. The flux showed a decrease in recent years (since 1990), coinciding with less riverine discharge, and perhaps more effective implementation of environmental regulations. The sediments were dominated by low molecular weight PAHs, suggesting anthropogenic input. Ratios of specific PAH isomer pairs suggested a greater input of petrogenic vs. pyrogenic derived PAHs. Notably, the deposition of high molecular weight PAHs increase in mangrove surface sediments was due to lignite and firewood combustion. Because of their overall low concentration in sediments it is unlikely these PAHs pose an immediate ecological hazard.

Our capability to conduct precision sampling and observations at depth in aquatic environments has been greatly expanded through the use of ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles). We describe a simple, relatively inexpensive ROV-based sampling system designed to collect water samples from small sublacustrine hydrothermal springs. The system consists of a peristaltic pump connected to a 16 loop flow trapping high pressure valve powered and actuated electrically from the surface. Multiple thermistors serve to detect geothermally warmed regions of the lake bottom and to indicate when heated hydrothermal solutions are being sampled. The system has been used successfully to collect water samples from high temperature springs in Yellowstone Lake in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.

Water samples freshly collected from southern Green Bay were innoculated with radiolabelled hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC) and, after equilibration, separated into particle bound, dissolved organic matter (DOM) bound and freely dissolved phases. Ambient suspended matter (2.7–28ppm) and dissolved organic carbon (5.2–11.5 ppm) were high in concentration relative to the open Great Lakes, but HOC distribution coefficients were not significantly different between Green Bay and previously measured open Great Lakes values. HOC in the particle phase ranged from 3 % for 4-MCB to 53 % for BaP and DDT. HOC associated with DOM was generally higher than for open lake samples, and ranged from 2% for 2,2′,5,5′-TCB to 26.5% for 4-MCB.

RADIONUCLIDES in lake sediments may act as indicators of the sedimentation rate of particles on which they are adsorbed; these rates in turn provide a direct indication of the residence times of particles in the water column. The radionuclide 137Cs is anthropogenic (an atomic-bomb product), so that its concentration in sediments also reveals the input history of this species and thus a record of atmospheric contamination by this nuclide in the lake's watershed. Here we report measurements of 137Cs and the natural radionuclide 210Pb in cores from several stations throughout the three basins of Lake Baikal. The results confirm earlier indirect estimates1 of the mean sedimentation rate, and show that the effective settling rate of these radionuclides is the same as that in the Great Lakes; the longer residence times for Lake Baikal are therefore simply a consequence of its greater depth. As well as allowing estimates of fluxes at the sediment–water interface2–1, our results provide information on the timing of palaeolimnological events5, on the existence of different depositional zones throughout the lake, on the long-term (decadal) diffusion of nuclides in sediments6 and for the development of mass-balance models for sediments and contaminants7–9.

Assimilation and retention of a PCB congener, 2,4,5,2′,4′,5′-hexachlorobiphenyl (HCBP), by the oppossum shrimp, Mysis relicta, was followed during sediment ingestion and defecation using a 14C label. Uptake was rapid and essentially linear, with mysids reaching a [14C]HCBP specific activity equivalent to that in the labeled sediment within 2 wk. Assimilation efficiencies calculated from the relative depletion of the label in the fecal material averaged 53% (±7%). Sediment ingestion rates calculated from the activity required to supply the label retained were approximately 1 mg∙mysid−1∙d−1, in agreement with published estimates. The distribution of HCBP as a function of particle size indicates that particle-size selective feeding by detritivores can have a significant effect on calculated assimilation efficiencies. Given the vertical migration behavior of M. relicta, sediment ingestion is a potentially important pathway for the reintroduction of sediment-associated contaminants into the pelagic environment of deep lakes.

[1] Measurements of 234Th/238U disequilibria were made on an approximately bimonthly basis over the course of a year in nearshore (10–40 m deep) and offshore (160 m deep) surface waters of the southern basin of Lake Michigan (18,100 km2). The mean activity of 238U in Lake Michigan measured 230 ± 20 dpm m−3, approximately 1 order of magnitude lower than what is typically found in marine systems. [1] Analysis of summer surface wind fields over the Laurentian Great Lakes from 1980 to 1999 show a statistically significant shift in wind direction beginning around 1990. Directional changes in the average wind field over the Great Lakes basin are consistent with a southward migration of the dominant summer storm track. In Green Bay (NW Lake Michigan), we show that the new wind field has most likely resulted in a decrease in water mass exchange with Lake Michigan leading to a decrease in bottom water hypoxia, warmer bottom water temperatures and an increase in benthic microbial metabolism.
