Abstract

Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra–high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 yr of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above 4 EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in R.A. above 8 EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the 8–16 EeV energy bin is now also above the 5 σ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above 8 EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of 0.3% yr ^−1 at the 95% confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to 0.03 EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. Finally, model predictions are discussed and compared with observations, based on two source emission scenarios obtained in the combined fit of spectrum and composition above 0.6 EeV.

Abstract

Abstract We present a measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum above 100 PeV using the part of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory that has a spacing of 750 m. An inflection of the spectrum is observed, confirming the presence of the so-called second-knee feature. The spectrum is then combined with that of the 1500 m array to produce a single measurement of the flux, linking this spectral feature with the three additional breaks at the highest energies. The combined spectrum, with an energy scale set calorimetrically via fluorescence telescopes and using a single detector type, results in the most statistically and systematically precise measurement of spectral breaks yet obtained. These measurements are critical for furthering our understanding of the highest energy cosmic rays.

Abstract

Abstract The hybrid design of the Pierre Auger Observatory allows for the measurement of the properties of extensive air showers initiated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays with unprecedented precision. By using an array of prototype underground muon detectors, we have performed the first direct measurement, by the Auger Collaboration, of the muon content of air showers between $$2\times 10^{17}$$ 2×1017 and $$2\times 10^{18}$$ 2×1018 eV. We have studied the energy evolution of the attenuation-corrected muon density, and compared it to predictions from air shower simulations. The observed densities are found to be larger than those predicted by models. We quantify this discrepancy by combining the measurements from the muon detector with those from the Auger fluorescence detector at $$10^{{17.5}}\, {\mathrm{eV}} $$ 1017.5eV and $$10^{{18}}\, {\mathrm{eV}} $$ 1018eV . We find that, for the models to explain the data, an increase in the muon density of $$38\%$$ 38% $$\pm 4\% (12\%)$$ ±4%(12%) $$\pm {}^{21\%}_{18\%}$$ ±18%21% for EPOS-LHC, and of $$50\% (53\%)$$ 50%(53%) $$\pm 4\% (13\%)$$ ±4%(13%) $$\pm {}^{23\%}_{20\%}$$ ±20%23% for QGSJetII-04, is respectively needed.

Abstract

A search for time-directional coincidences of ultra-high-energy (UHE) photons above 10 EeV with gravitational wave (GW) events from the LIGO/Virgo runs O1 to O3 is conducted with the Pierre Auger Observatory. Due to the distinctive properties of photon interactions and to the background expected from hadronic showers, a subset of the most interesting GW events is selected based on their localization quality and distance. Time periods of 1000 s around and 1 day after the GW events are analyzed. No coincidences are observed. Upper limits on the UHE photon fluence from a GW event are derived that are typically at ∼7 MeV cm ^−2 (time period 1000 s) and ∼35 MeV cm ^−2 (time period 1 day). Due to the proximity of the binary neutron star merger GW170817, the energy of the source transferred into UHE photons above 40 EeV is constrained to be less than 20% of its total GW energy. These are the first limits on UHE photons from GW sources.

Abstract

A catalog containing details of the highest-energy cosmic rays recorded through the detection of extensive air showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented with the aim of opening the data to detailed examination. Descriptions of the 100 showers created by the highest-energy particles recorded between 2004 January 1 and 2020 December 31 are given for cosmic rays that have energies in the range 78–166 EeV. Details are also given on a further nine very energetic events that have been used in the calibration procedure adopted to determine the energy of each primary. A sky plot of the arrival directions of the most energetic particles is shown. No interpretations of the data are offered.

Abstract

An overview of the multi-messenger capabilities of the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented. The techniques and performance of searching for Ultra-High Energy neutrinos, photons and neutrons are described. Some of the most relevant results are reviewed, such as stringent upper bounds that were placed to a flux of diffuse cosmogenic neutrinos and photons, bounds placed on neutrinos emitted from compact binary mergers that were detected by LIGO and Virgo during their first and second observing runs, as well as searches for high energy photons and neutrons from the Galactic center that constrain the properties of the putative Galactic PeVatron, observed by the H.E.S.S. collaboration. The observation of directional correlations between ultra-high energy cosmic rays and either high energy astrophysical neutrinos or specific source populations, weighted by their electromagnetic radiation, are also discussed. They constitute additional multi-messenger approaches aimed at identifying the sources of high energy cosmic rays.

Abstract

We report a first measurement for ultrahigh energy cosmic rays of the correlation between the depth of shower maximum and the signal in the water Cherenkov stations of air-showers registered simultaneously by the fluorescence and the surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such a correlation measurement is a unique feature of a hybrid air-shower observatory with sensitivity to both the electromagnetic and muonic components. It allows an accurate determination of the spread of primary masses in the cosmic-ray flux. Up till now, constraints on the spread of primary masses have been dominated by systematic uncertainties. The present correlation measurement is not affected by systematics in the measurement of the depth of shower maximum or the signal in the water Cherenkov stations. The analysis relies on general characteristics of air showers and is thus robust also with respect to uncertainties in hadronic event generators. The observed correlation in the energy range around the ‘ankle’ at lg⁡(E/eV)=18.5–19.0 differs significantly from expectations for pure primary cosmic-ray compositions. A light composition made up of proton and helium only is equally inconsistent with observations. The data are explained well by a mixed composition including nuclei with mass A>4. Scenarios such as the proton dip model, with almost pure compositions, are thus disfavored as the sole explanation of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray flux at Earth. Abstract

This study proposes a block-based multicut Benders decomposition algorithm to solve the co-planning of transmission expansion and energy storage problem in a bi-level approach. The proposal breaks the chronological representative period into multiple subperiods blocks. This division makes it possible to use parallel computation methods to solve each block simultaneously, reducing the simulation time, which allows the use of a more extensive time window to model the variability of random variables of the system, such as wind and load. In the proposed algorithm, the master problem defines the State of Charge (SoC) of the energy storage devices between the blocks and the investment in transmission and energy storage devices. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, different sizes of representative periods are evaluated in three test systems: Garver 6-bus, IEEE-RTS 24-bus, and IEEE-118 188-bus. The tests compare the performance of the proposed block-based multicut Benders decomposition algorithm with the usual approach applied in the literature considering Benders decomposition and the complete problem formulated as a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem.

Abstract

O presente trabalho engloba como principal assunto moradias precárias e pessoas em situação de rua. Em seu decorrer é discriminado que a baixa renda e a pressão social são os principais fatores que levam pessoas ao desespero por uma casa própria, muitas vezes saindo de uma situação de rua para morar em locais inapropriados, onde a faltam recursos básicos que colocam em risco a vida dos moradores, sendo eles 53% população do estado de São Paulo. O fator do solo é muito relevante para prever deslizamentos e outros tipos de abalos, que interferem na segurança, e na qualidade de vida da população local. Ainda que a qualidade do solo, seja adequada, a utilização de materiais inapropriados gera grandes riscos, se os recursos da construção de moradias precárias tornam o ambiente inseguro, pode ser muito ruim para a saúde dessa população mais pobre e vulnerável que ali habita. O estudo evidenciou que projetos sociais, que viabilizam reformas incluindo materiais e utensílios reutilizáveis em bom estado, além de gerar o impacto para as famílias dando mais segurança a elas, concede também qualidade de vida, com a possibilidade de um lar digno. Adicionalmente. o trabalho tem envolvimento com os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS) 3, 6, 10, e 11 da Agenda 2030 da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU). Pois com o desenvolvimento correto e sustentável das construções e habitações sociais, a população terá saúde e bem-estar, acesso a água potável e saneamento as desigualdades serão reduzidas, e as cidades e comunidades serão sustentáveis.

Abstract

The use of biostimulants in second-crop maize (Zea mays) can promote higher physiological activity in plants, resulting in higher grain yield. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of phytohormones and nicotinamide on growth and yield traits of second-crop maize. The statistical design used was a randomized block design arranged in a factorial scheme with two doses of phytohormones (0 and 500 mL ha-1) × five concentrations of nicotinamide (0, 200, 400, 600, and 800 mg L-1) with four replications. The use of biostimulants favored all variables evaluated for the maize crop. The isolated use of phytohormones and nicotinamide promoted grain yields of 6089.6 and 6242.5 kg ha-1, respectively, representing gains of 6.0 and 11.6%, respectively, compared with the control. The application of 800 mg L-1 nicotinamide resulted in the highest maize grain yield. The use of phytohormones and nicotinamide, isolated or associated, was favorable for the growth characteristics and grain yield of second-crop maize. A synergistic effect was noted between phytohormones and nicotinamide on the first ear insertion height and number of rows per ear. RESUMO O uso de bioestimulantes no milho segunda safra (Zea mays) pode promover maior atividade fisiológica das plantas, resultando em maior produtividade de grãos. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar as características de crescimento e produtividade do milho segunda safra sob aplicação de fitormônios e nicotinamida. O delineamento estatístico utilizado foi em blocos casualizados dispostos em esquema fatorial com 2 doses de fitohormônios (0 e 500 mL ha-1) × 5 concentrações de nicotinamida (0, 200, 400, 600 e 800 mg L-1) com quatro repetições. O uso dos dois bioestimulantes favoreceu todas as variáveis avaliadas para a cultura do milho. O uso isolado de fitormônios e nicotinamida promoveu produtividades de grãos de 6.089,6 e 6.242,5 kg ha-1, representando respectivamente, ganhos de 6,0 e 11,6%, em relação à testemunha. A aplicação de 800 mg L-1 de nicotinamida proporcionou maior produtividade de grãos de milho. O uso de fitohormônios e nicotinamida, isolados ou associados, foram favoráveis às características de crescimento e produtividade do milho segunda safra. Houve efeito sinérgico de fitormônios e nicotinamida para altura de inserção da primeira espiga e o número de fileiras por espiga.

Abstract

Objective: To describe recommendations for the care and handling of preterm infants in the COVID-19 pandemic scenario. Methods: Integrated Literature Review (ILR) conducted in 2020 in databases in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) by extracting scientific productions from the databases: MEDLINE, SCIELO, PUBMED and LILACS, with a final sample of 14 publications. Results: Among the recommendations found in the studies analyzed, regarding childbirth, it is recommended to choose the best time, route and place, prioritizing the use of a negative pressure room. After delivery, newborns should have the umbilical cord clamped, be cleaned and dried as soon as possible, and isolated and tested early. After initial care, the use of a mask and hand hygiene is recommended before each meal or other close contact with the newborn. Ideally, suspected or contaminated RN should be kept in isolation and constantly monitored, with a quarantine period of at least 14 days. Conclusions: The knowledge of nurses and other health care professionals about prevention and control measures for newborn infection with COVID-19 is critical to the prevention, control, and reduction of the impact of the pandemic on the neonatal population. Abstract

We analyze the susceptible-infected-susceptible model for epidemic spreading in which a fraction of the individuals become immune by vaccination. This process is understood as a dilution by vaccination, which decreases the fraction of the susceptible individuals. For a nonzero fraction of vaccinated individuals, the model predicts a new state in which the disease spreads but eventually becomes extinct. The new state emerges when the fraction of vaccinated individuals is greater than a critical value. The model predicts that this critical value increases as one increases the infection rate reaching an asymptotic value, which is strictly less than the unity. Above this asymptotic value, the extinction occurs no matter how large the infection rate is.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Because impulse oscillometry (IOS) can detect changes in the small airways and is safer to perform during the COVID-19 pandemic than other pulmonary function tests, it may have value in investigating pulmonary sequelae in COVID-19 survivors. This study evaluated the performance of IOS in detecting lung abnormalities in COVID-19 survivors and investigated the associations of the findings with those of lung ultrasound (LUS) and spirometry. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 117 subjects underwent IOS at a frequency range of 4–20 Hz 2 months after COVID-19 diagnosis. They also underwent spirometry and LUS, and their aeration scores were calculated. RESULTS: On IOS, the resonance frequency was > 12 Hz, and the area under the reactance curve was > 3.60 cm H(2)O/L/s in 70 (59.8%) and 55 (47.0%) subjects, respectively. A heterogeneity of resistance between R4 and R20 (R4-R20) > 20% was observed in 60 (51.3%) participants. Based on their abnormalities in resistive and reactive parameters, 76 (65.0%) participants had abnormal IOS. Spirometry abnormalities were detected in 40 (34.2%) cases. LUS was abnormal in 51 (43.6%) participants, and the median aeration score was 0 (0–8) points. Abnormal IOS was associated with abnormal LUS (P < .001) and abnormal spirometry (P = .002). Abnormal spirometry had a significant but weaker association with abnormal LUS (P = .031). In participants who reported hospitalization, abnormal IOS was associated with both abnormal LUS (P = .001) and abnormal spirometry (P = .006). In participants who did not report hospitalization, abnormal IOS was associated with abnormal LUS (P < .001) but not abnormal spirometry (P = .063). CONCLUSIONS: In COVID-19 survivors, IOS detected changes even when spirometry was normal. In these individuals, IOS parameters were more strongly associated with abnormalities on LUS than with abnormalities on spirometry.

Abstract

In order to accommodate the uncertainty and variability of wind power, this paper proposes a scenario-based probabilistic model to assess the impact of intermittent wind power-based Renewable Energy Resources (RES) on the Transmission Network Expansion Planning (TNEP). The objectives comprise the evaluation of impacts considering the wind power penetration into connected and unconnected buses, as well as the optimization of reinforcements that must be made to avoid unwanted wind cutting operations and load shedding. The wind power uncertainties are represented through scenarios obtained from real historical series grouped by using the well-known k-means algorithm. The methodology performance is verified in a practical equivalent Brazilian southern system, modified to include a significant amount of wind energy. The obtained results show that the RES insertion impacts the TNEP task, changing the expansion decision.

Abstract

O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da suplementação com butirato de sódio nos níveis de glicose plasmática e no metabolismo lipídico de vacas no meio da lactação. Para isso, foram utilizadas 10 vacas (4 da raça Holandês e 6 da raça Jersey), multíparas, com 150 dias em lactação (DEL) e aleatoriamente divididas em 2 grupos: Grupo Controle (GC, n = %), que recebeu uma dieta padrão; Grupo Tratamento (GT, n = 5), que recebeu a dieta padrão mais 1,0g/kg de peso vivo por dia de butirato de sódio por um periodo de 8 dias. Amostras individuais de sangue foram coletadas diariamente durante o periodo experimental para análise de β-hidroxibutirato (BHB), ácidos graxos não esterificados (AGNE), triglicerídeos, colesterol e glicose. Pode ser observado que no GT os níveis de BHB plasmático foi maior (0,64 ± 0,03 mmol/l e 0,91 ± 0,03 mmol/l, para GC e GT, respectivamente, P = 0.001) e os níveis de glicose foram mais baixos que o GC (55,5 ± 0,84 mg/dL e 51,1 ± 0,75 mg/dL, para GT e GC, respectivamente, P < 0.0001). Esses resultados mostram que a suplementação de vacas com butirato de sódio pode regular a taxa de lipólise e as concentrações de AGNE, melhorando o estado de saúde do animal.

Abstract

This study examines rumen-fluid parameters and the biochemical profile of feedlot sheep supplemented with a commercial product composed of yeast culture and enzymatically hydrolyzed yeast during an abrupt change of diet. Eight sheep at 30 months of age, with an average weight of 40.2 ± 3.4 kg, were housed in individual stalls where they received the same diet twice daily, which was formulated according to the National Research Council [NRC] (2007). The animals were divided into two groups, namely, supplemented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SG, n = 4) and control (CG, n = 4). The experiment consisted of three periods: the first (seven days) consisted of an acclimation to the roughage-only diet; in the second period (five days), the animals of SG started to receive supplementation; lastly, in the third period (five days), all animals underwent a sudden change of diet, which was characterized by an alteration from 100% roughage to a 50:50 ratio (roughage:concentrate) without prior adaptation. Blood samples were collected to evaluate albumin, aspartate amino transferase, calcium, gamma glutamyl transferase, globulins, glucose, magnesium, potassium, sodium, total plasma proteins and urea. Rumen fluid was harvested to evaluate physical aspects. Supplementation increased the protozoa count; the rate of sedimentation and fluctuation remained within the physiological parameters; and total plasma proteins and globulin decreased. Therefore, the yeast appears to be a promising alternative for reducing the deleterious effects of an abrupt change of diet.

Abstract

This paper proposes a two-stage framework to solve the long-term transmission network expansion planning (TNEP) problem ensuring user-defined reliability levels and wind curtailment over the planning horizon. In the first stage, the static TNEP (S-TNEP) problem is solved to define where a set of new lines must be installed at the end of planning horizon. In the second stage, a multistage procedure is performed to solve the dynamic TNEP (D-TNEP) in order to determine the moment that each transmission line should be built. Both S-TNEP and D-TNEP are decomposed into investment decision and performance assessment through a bi-level scheme based on Benders decomposition; thus, the reliability is considered and evaluated over the planning process. The reliability and performance indexes are obtained through the non-chronological Monte Carlo simulation considering the random behavior of transmission lines failures, load fluctuations and uncertainties over wind availability. The loss of wind probability performance index is introduced to measure the probability of wind curtailment in each connection point of the system, and it is used to prevent wind farms from being underused. The proposed methodology is tested in modified versions of the 24-bus IEEE reliability test system and the IEEE 118-bus test system.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the associations of oral health literacy (OHL), sense of coherence (SOC) and other covariates with self-reported school performance (SRSP) in adolescents enrolled in public schools in Brazil.This was a cross-sectional study conducted with adolescents aged from 14 to 18 years enrolled in 6 public schools in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. Researchers carried out data collection at schools using a self-administered structured questionnaire. The dependent variable was SRSP. The explanatory factors included were sociodemographic characteristics, OHL, SOC, self-rated oral health, health behaviors, and experience of bullying. Analyses included simple and multiple logistic regression models.The final sample consisted of 385 adolescents with a mean age of 16 years. Poor school performance was associated (95%CI) with being male, with more than 1 sibling, individual whose last visit to the dentist was due to dental pain, with a lower level of OHL and SOC.OHL and SOC were important factors associated with SRSP performance together with other sociodemographic and oral health-related variables in high school students. Our findings reinforce the importance of intersectoral actions between the health and education sectors to promote better school performance among adolescents, including actions to improve OHL and SOC.

Abstract

We examine the development of the concept of parametric invariance in classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and thermodynamics, and particularly its relation to entropy. The parametric invariance was used by Ehrenfest as a principle related to the quantization rules of the old quantum mechanics. It was also considered by Rayleigh in the determination of pressure caused by vibration, and the general approach we follow here is based on his. Specific calculation of invariants in classical and quantum mechanics are determined. The Hertz invariant, which is a volume in phase space, is extended to the case of a variable number of particles. We show that the slow parametric change leads to the adiabatic process, allowing the definition of entropy as a parametric invariance.

Abstract

We study closed systems of particles that are subject to stochastic forces in addition to the conservative forces. The stochastic equations of motion are set up in such a way that the energy is strictly conserved at all times. To ensure this conservation law, the evolution equation for the probability density is derived using an appropriate interpretation of the stochastic equation of motion that is not the It\^o nor the Stratonovic interpretation. The trajectories in phase space are restricted to the surface of constant energy. Despite this restriction, the entropy is shown to increase with time, expressing irreversible behavior and relaxation to equilibrium. This main result of the present approach contrasts with that given by the Liouville equation, which also describes closed systems, but does not show irreversibility.

Abstract

We examine the analytical theories of heat developed by Laplace, Poisson and Carnot, and the thermodynamic theories based on the energy conservation and the principle of the increase of entropy formulated by Clausius. We present an analysis of the approaches developed by Maxwell, Gibbs, Planck, Duhem, Nernst, and De Donder as well as the irreversible thermodynamics of Prigogine, and the theory of liquid gas transition of van der Waals. We show that the thermodynamic potentials dominated the development of the theory of thermodynamics since Gibbs. They were introduced by Massieu under the name of characteristic functions and were demonstrated by Gibbs to have the suitable properties to characterize equilibrium of systems with variable composition, and to hold the convexity properties. We also show that the thermodynamic potentials were the relevant quantity in the Duhem approach to thermodynamics and to thermochemistry.

We examine the concept of probability from its emergence within the realm of the games of chance and the development of the theory of probability until the appearance of the treatise of Kolmogorov on this subject. The discipline related to that theory is framed as the science of aleatory events. Probability is understood as a primitive concept represented by a measure assigned to the space of events and obeying the fundamental postulates of the theory. The measurement of probability is the ratio of the number of the observed favorable outcomes and the total number of observed outcomes when these numbers are larger enough.
