1. Stacking Fault Energy Analyses of Additively Manufactured Stainless Steel 316L and CrCoNi Medium Entropy Alloy Using In Situ Neutron Diffraction

Abstract

Abstract Stacking fault energies (SFE) were determined in additively manufactured (AM) stainless steel (SS 316 L) and equiatomic CrCoNi medium-entropy alloys. AM specimens were fabricated via directed energy deposition and tensile loaded at room temperature. In situ neutron diffraction was performed to obtain a number of faulting-embedded diffraction peaks simultaneously from a set of (hkl) grains during deformation. The peak profiles diffracted from imperfect crystal structures were analyzed to correlate stacking fault probabilities and mean-square lattice strains to the SFE. The result shows that averaged SFEs are 32.8 mJ/m2 for the AM SS 316 L and 15.1 mJ/m2 for the AM CrCoNi alloys. Meanwhile, during deformation, the SFE varies from 46 to 21 mJ/m2 (AM SS 316 L) and 24 to 11 mJ/m2 (AM CrCoNi) from initial to stabilized stages, respectively. The transient SFEs are attributed to the deformation activity changes from dislocation slip to twinning as straining. The twinning deformation substructure and atomic stacking faults were confirmed by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The significant variance of the SFE suggests the critical twinning stress as 830 ± 25 MPa for the AM SS 316 L and 790 ± 40 MPa for AM CrCoNi, respectively.

Abstract

We report values of $R\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\sigma}({e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{hadrons})/\ensuremath{\sigma}({e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ for 85 center-of-mass energies between 2 and $5\mathrm{GeV}$ measured with the upgraded Beijing Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider.

Abstract

The branching fraction of the psi(2S) decay into tau(+) tau(-) has been measured for the first time using the BES detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. The result is B-tautau =(2.71+/-0.43+/-0.55) x 10(-3), where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. This value, along with those for the branching fractions into e(+)c(-) and mu(+)mu(-) of this resonance, satisfy well the relation predicted by the sequential lepton hypothesis. Combining all these values with the leptonic width of the resonance, the total width of the psi(2S) is determined to be (252+/-37) keV.

Abstract

Radiative decays of the radially excited charmonium resonance, \psi(2S), into \pi\pi, K Kbar and \eta\eta final states have been measured in a sample of 3.96 * 10^6 \psi(2S) events collected by the BES collaboration. The branching ratios B(\psi(2S) -> \gamma f_{2}(1270)) = (2.27 +- 0.26 +- 0.39) * 10^{-4} and B(\psi(2S) -> \gamma f_0(1710)) * B(f_0(1710) -> K^+ K^-) = (5.59 +- 1.12 +- 0.93) * 10^{-5} are obtained. When compared to the corresponding radiative J/\psi decays, the observed \psi(2S) radiative decay rates into \gamma f_2(1270) and \gamma f_0(1710) are consistent with the 15% rule., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

In a sample of 7.8 million J/{psi} decays collected in the Beijing Spectrometer, the process J/{psi}{yields}{gamma}{eta}{sub c} is observed for five different {eta}{sub c} decay channels: K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, K{sup {+-}}K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup {+-}} (with K{sub S}{sup 0}{yields}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}), {phi}{phi} (with {phi}{yields}K{sup +}K{sup -}) and K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}. From these signals, we determine the mass of {eta}{sub c} to be 2976.6{+-}2.9{+-}1.3 MeV. Combining this result with a previously reported result from a similar study using {psi}(2S){yields}{gamma}{eta}{sub c} detected in the same spectrometer gives m{sub {eta}{sub c}}=2976.3{+-}2.3{+-}1.2 MeV. For the combined samples, we obtain {gamma}{sub {eta}{sub c}}=11.0{+-}8.1{+-}4.1 MeV. (c) 2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

A sample of 3.95M $\psi(2S)$ decays registered in the BES detector are used to study final states containing pairs of octet and decuplet baryons. We report branching fractions for $\psi(2S)\to p\bar{p}$, $\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$, $\Sigma^0\bar{\Sigma}{}^0$, $\Xi^-\bar{\Xi}{}^+$, $\Delta^{++}\bar{\Delta}{}^{--}$, $\Sigma^+(1385)\bar{\Sigma}{}^-(1385)$, $\Xi^0(1530)\bar{\Xi}{}^0(1530)$, and $\Omega^-\bar{\Omega}{}^+$. 12. Serum levels of antioxidant vitamins in relation to coronary artery disease: a case control study of Koreans

Abstract

With the changes in trends of disease pattern from infectious to chronic degenerative disease, cardiovascular disease has been considered as the major cause of death in Korea. Numerous studies have been done on the antioxidant effects of some vitamins in the prevention of chronic illness, but not many in relation to the cardiovascular disease. Therefore, the relation between antioxidant vitamins, mainly alpha-tocopherol (alpha-T) and beta-carotene (beta-C), and coronary artery disease (CAD) such as angina pectoris and myocardial infarction has been investigated in this study. The blood samples were obtained from the CAD patients who were angiographically diagnosed within a month (100 case group). Patients who had an experience of PTCA or CABG were excluded from the study. Control subjects were healthy adults who had normal EKG values, no chest pain and no past history of cardiac disease (100 control group). All subjects were free for serum lipid lowering drugs. Serum alpha-T and beta-C were analysed using HPLC. In addition to antioxidant vitamins, serum lipids (total cholesterol, HDL, TG) were also measured. Each case and control was matched in terms of age and sex. And all the CAD risk factors such as blood pressure, smoking, alcohol, serum lipid profile and BMI were adjusted to determine pure effect(s) of alpha-T and beta-C on the CAD. The concentrations of both alpha-T and beta-C were significantly lower in the CAD group than those in control group (P0.05); in CAD group, mean values of alpha-T and beta-C were 11.9 +/- 7.2 (micrograms/ml), 35.8 +/- 3.1 (micrograms/dl) respectively. As for the levels of beta-C, it shows inverse relation with age, but not for the alpha-T levels. Serum levels of both vitamins did not show any significant differences in terms of sex, but men have a tendency o higher levels of beta-C, but lower levels of alpha-T.

Abstract

Evidence that stem cell factor (SCF) and c-Kit receptor tyrosine kinase expressed in the cerebellum during postnatal development, suggests a possible contribution of the SCF/Kit signaling pathway in the cerebellar development. In the present study, we prepared cerebellar cultures from C57Bl/6J mouse at postnatal day 6 to investigate the role of c-Kit receptor and SCF in regulation of cell growth and viability in the postnatal cerebellar cells. SCF increased the number of survival cells and density of calbindin and GFAP expression in the immunoblot analysis. Treatment with c-Kit antibody accelerated cellular loss in serum-free media and decreased the expression of calbindin and GFAP. The recovery effects of SCF on the cellular proliferation and the expression of functional proteins in the cultures containing c-Kit antibody suggest an involvement of SCF/Kit pathways in the control of postnatal development of cerebellar cells.

Abstract

We report experimental observations of relative blue-shifts in the particle-plasmon resonance of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) covered with a vanadium dioxide (VO2) film as the VO2 material undergoes a semiconductor-to-metal transition at approximately 67 °C. Although the extinction spectra of the Au NPs exhibit significant red-shifts in the presence of the surrounding VO2 film as compared to the same particles in air, the key result of this work is the dynamically controlled blue-shift of the Au-NP dipole resonance upon thermal switching of the VO2 overlayer from the semiconducting to the metallic state. We also report on the size and polarization dependence of the extinction spectra for both states, and present Mie theory calculations that confirm in a semi-quantitative way the observed trends in the VO2-induced modulation of the Au-NP plasmon resonance, and their origin in the VO2 dielectric function.
