[EN] The MOSCAB experiment (Materia OSCura A Bolle) uses the Geyser technique for dark matter search. The results of the first 0.5 kg mass prototype detector using superheated C3F8 liquid were very encouraging, achieving a 5 keV nuclear recoil threshold with high insensitivity to gamma radiation. Additionally, the technique seems to be easily scalable to higher masses for both in terms of complexity and costs, resulting in a very competitive technique for direct dark matter search, especially for the spin dependent case. Here, we report as well in the construction and commissioning of the big detector of 40 kg at the Milano-Bicocca University. The detector, the calibration tests and the evaluation of the background will be presented. Once demonstrated the functionality of the detector, it will be operated at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in 2015., We acknowledge the financial support of the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN) and Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO), Grants FPA2012-37528-C02-02, and Consolider MultiDark CSD2009-00064, and of the Generalitat Valenciana, Grants ACOMP/2014/153 and PrometeoII/2014/079.

Elastic and proton-dissociative $\rho^0$ photoproduction ( $\gamma p \rightarrow \rho^0 p$ , $\gamma p \rightarrow \rho^0 N$ , respectively, with $\rho^0 \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-$ ) has been studied in $ep$ interactions at HERA for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range $50 < W < 100$ GeV and for $|t| < 0.5$ GeV $^2$ , where $t$ is the square of the four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex; the results on the proton-dissociative reaction are presented for masses of the dissociated proton system in the range $M_N^2 < 0.1 W^2$ . For the elastic process, the $\pi^+\pi^-$ invariant mass spectrum has been investigated as a function of $t$ . As in fixed target experiments, the $\rho^0$ resonance shape is asymmetric; this asymmetry decreases with increasing $|t|$ , as expected in models in which the asymmetry is ascribed to the interference of resonant and non-resonant $\pi^+\pi^-$ production. The cross section has been studied as a function of $W$ ; a fit to the resonant part with the form $W^a$ gives $a=0.16\pm 0.06 \mbox{(stat.)} ^{+0.11}_{-0.15} \mbox{(syst.)}$ . The resonant part of the $\gamma p \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^- p$ cross section is $11.2\pm 0.1 \mbox{(stat.)} ^{+1.1}_{-1.2} \mbox{(syst.)}$ $\mu$ b at $\langle W\rangle=71.7$ GeV. The $t$ dependence of the cross section can be described by a function of the type $A_{\rho} \exp{(-b_{\rho} |t| + c_{\rho} t^2)}$ with $b_{\rho}= 10.9 \pm 0.3$ (stat.) $^{+1.0}_{-0.5}$ (syst.) GeV $^{-2}$ and $c_{\rho}= 2.7 \pm 0.9$ (stat.) $^{+1.9}_{-1.7}$ (syst.) GeV $^{-4}$ . The $t$ dependence has also been studied as a function of $W$ and a value of the slope of the pomeron trajectory $\alpha_{\mathbb{P}}^{\prime}= 0.23 \pm 0.15 \mbox{(stat.)} ^{+0.10}_{-0.07} \mbox{(syst.)}$ GeV $^{-2}$ has been deduced. The $\rho^0$ spin density matrix elements $r^{04}_{00}$ , $r^{04}_{1-1}$ and ${\frak R}{e[r^{04}_{10}]}$ have been measured and found to be consistent with expectations based on $s$ -channel helicity conservation. For proton-dissociative $\pi^+\pi^-$ photoproduction in the $\rho^0$ mass range, the distributions of the two-pion invariant mass, $W$ and the polar and azimuthal angles of the pions in the helicity frame are the same within errors as those for the elastic process. The $t$ distribution has been fitted to an exponential function with a slope parameter $5.8 \pm 0.3 \mbox{(stat.)} \pm 0.5 \mbox{(syst.)}$ GeV $^{-2}$ . The ratio of the elastic to proton-dissociative $\rho^0$ photoproduction cross section is $2.0 \pm 0.2 \mbox{(stat.)} \pm 0.7 \mbox{(syst.)}$ .

Photon diffractive dissociation, \(\gamma p \rightarrow Xp\), has been studied at HERA with the ZEUS detector using \(ep\) interactions where the virtuality \(Q^2\) of the exchanged photon is smaller than 0.02 GeV\(^2\). The squared four-momentum \(t\) exchanged at the proton vertex was determined in the range \(0.073< |t| < 0.40\) GeV\(^2\) by measuring the scattered proton in the ZEUS Leading Proton Spectrometer. In the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy interval \(176 < W < 225\) GeV and for masses of the dissociated photon system \(4 < M_X < 32\) GeV, the \(t\) distribution has an exponential shape, \(dN/d|t| \propto \exp{(-b|t|)}\), with a slope parameter \(b=6.8 \pm 0.9\) (stat.)\(^{+1.2}_{-1.1}\) (syst.) GeV\(^{-2}\).

A small electromagnetic sampling calorimeter, installed in the ZEUS experiment in 1995, significantly enhanced the acceptance for very low x and low Q 2 inelastic neutral current scattering, e+p → e+X, at HERA. A measurement of the proton structure function F2 and the total virtual photon-proton ( γ ∗ p ) cross-section is presented for 0.11 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 0.65 GeV2 and 2 × 10−6 ≤ x ≤ 6 × 10−5, corresponding to a range in the γ ∗ p c.m. energy of 100 ≤ W ≤ 230 GeV. Comparisons with various models are also presented.

Deep inelastic charged-current reactions have been studied ine+p ande−p collisions at a center of mass energy of about 300GeV in the kinematic regionQ2>200GeV2 andx>0.006 using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The integrated cross sections forQ2>200GeV2 are found to be \(\sigma _{e^ + p \to \bar \nu X} = 30.3_{ - 4.2 - 2.6}^{ + 5.5 + 1.6} pb\) and \(\sigma _{e^ - p \to \nu X} = 54.7_{ - 9.8 - 3.4}^{ + 15.9 + 2.8} pb\). Differential cross sections have been measured as functions of the variablesx, y andQ2. From the measured differential cross sectionsdσ/dQ2, theW boson mass is determined to be \(M_W = 79_{ - 7 - 4}^{ + 8 + 4} GeV\). Measured jet rates and transverse energy profiles agree with model predictions. A search for charged-current interactions with a large rapidity gap yielded one candidate event, corresponding to a cross section of \(\sigma _{e^ + p \to \bar \nu X} (Q^2 > 200 GeV^2 ; \eta _{\max }< 2.5) = 0.8_{ - 0.7}^{ + 1.8} \pm 0.1 pb\)

The reproduction of Braille writing has been, up until now, a purely manual job. To overcome this problem, many researchers have tried to develop a Braille reading machine in some way or another. Their efforts have not given a satisfying solution. The goal of the research described in this text is to develop a system that converts, within acceptable constraints, Braille (image) to a computer readable form (text). Having the text on a computer, a Braille printing house can reproduce it using an electronic Braille embosser. >

Data on the longitudinal and transverse shower profiles initiated by 10, 20, 30, 50, 75, and 100 GeV positive hadron beams are presented. They have been measured with a 6λ deep sampling hadronic calorimeter using 3.2 mm thick depleted uranium plates as absorber and 3.0 mm scintillator layers as active material. The scintillator is read out with wavelength shifter plates coupled to photomultipliers. The data are compared to Monte Carlo calculations, simulating both the development of hadronic cascades as well as detector effects.

We have exposed a sandwich calorimeter, consisting of 3.3 mm thick uranium pnterleaved with 2.6 mm thick scintillator tiles, to positive and negative electrons and pions and to protons in the momentum range of 0.5 to 10 GeV/c. We find that e/h is about 1 above 3 GeV/c, but decreases significantly for lower momenta. This ratio is the same for positive and negative pions and also for pions and protons of the same kinetic energy.

Four prototype modules following the same design as the ZEUS forward calorimeter (FCAL) modules have been constructed and tested with electrons, hadrons and muons in the momentum range of 1 to 100 GeV/ c . The main topics under investigation were: calibration, uniformity of response, noise, light yield, energy resolution and the electron to hadron response (e/h ratio). The result of the measurements is presented and the expected performance of the FCAL is discussed in the light of these results.

The ANTARES neutrino telescope, to be immersed depth in the Mediterranean Sea, will consist of a 3 dimensional matrix of 900 large area photomultiplier tubes housed in pressure resistant glass spheres. The selection of the optimal photomultiplier was a critical step for the project and required an intensive phase of tests and developments carried out in close collaboration with the main manufacturers worldwide. This paper provides an overview of the tests performed by the collaboration and describes in detail the features of the PMT chosen for ANTARES., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures. The subjet multiplicity has been measured in neutral current e+p interactions at Q**2 > 125 GeV**2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.6 pb-1. Jets were identified in the laboratory frame using the longitudinally invariant K_T cluster algorithm. The number of jet-like substructures within jets, known as the subjet multiplicity, is defined as the number of clusters resolved in a jet by reapplying the jet algorithm at a smaller resolution scale y_cut. Measurements of the mean subjet multiplicity, < n_sbj >, for jets with transverse energies E_T,jet >15 GeV are presented. Next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations describe the measurements well. The value of alpha_s(M_Z), determined from < n_sbj > at y_cut=10**-2 for jets with 25 < E_T,jet < 71 GeV, is alpha_s (M_Z) = 0.1187 +/- 0.0017 (stat.) +0.0024 / -0.0009 (syst.) +0.0093 / -0.0076 (th.)., Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables; submitted to Phys. The ANTARES collaboration is building a deep sea neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. This detector will cover a sensitive area of typically 0.1 km-squared and will be equipped with about 1000 optical modules. Each of these optical modules consists of a large area photomultiplier and its associated electronics housed in a pressure resistant glass sphere. The design of the ANTARES optical module, which is a key element of the detector, has been finalized following extensive R & D studies and is reviewed here in detail., 26 pages, 15 figures, to be published in NIM

New results on deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering (DIS), obtained by the ZEUS and H1 collaborations at the HERA collider (DESY, Hamburg) significantly expand the knowledge gained in earlier, fixed target experiments. The new kinematic domain accessed by the HERA experiments yielded the following results: • - quark and gluon densities rise rapidly for decreasing x (their fractional momentum). This behavior persists down to low values of Q 2 (minus the squared four momentum of the field quantum exchanged between lepton and hadron). • - the scaling violations over the entire kinematic domain (x > 10−5, Q 2 > 1 GeV2) are in quantitative agreement with perturbative QCD. • - the low x region allows a study of cross sections both from the point of view of QCD (small distance) and of Regge theory (high energy) and may lead to new insights into the transition of the perturbative into the non-perturbative regime. The low x region may also reveal differences between different realizations of perturbative, higher order QCD (DGLAP vs. BFKL) and ultimately even effects of ‘high density QCD’. • - diffractive DIS, observed at HERA for the first time, allows the study of the diffractive amplitude (‘the Pomeron’) at small distances. These studies are based on integrated luminosities of several tens of pb−1 for each experiment. Detector upgrades and higher luminosity will allow elaboration of these interesting results and will allow accurate measurements at high x and Q 2: a new and potentially very interesting domain onto which we have just started to set foot.

Events containing an isolated prompt photon with high transverse energy, together with a balancing jet, have been observed for the first time in photoproduction at HERA.The data were taken with the ZEUS detector, in a $\gamma p$ centre of mass energy range 120--250 GeV. The fraction of the incoming photon energy participating in the production of the prompt photon and the jet, $x_\gamma$, shows a strong peak near unity, consistent with LO QCD Monte Carlo predictions. In the transverse energy and pseudorapidity range $5\le \eTg < 10$ GeV, $-0.7 \le \eta^\gamma < 0.8$, $\eTj\ge 5$ GeV, and $-1.5\le \eta^{jet}\le 1.8$, with $\xgO > 0.8,$ the measured cross section is $15.3 \pm 3.8 \pm 1.8 pb$, in good agreement with a recent NLO calculation., Comment: 22 pages including 8 figures

Charged particle production has been measured in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) events using the ZEUS detector over a large range of $Q^2$ from 10 to $1280 {\rm\ GeV}^2$. The evolution with $Q$ of the charged multiplicity and scaled momentum has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit frame. The data are used to study QCD \linebreak coherence effects in DIS and are compared with corresponding \ee~data in order to test the universality of quark fragmentation., 33 pages, latex, 8 figures appended as uuencoded file

Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction ep → jet + X at Q2 below 4 GeV2 have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 0.55 pb-1. These cross sections are given in the kinematic region 0.2 < y < 0.85, for jet pseudorapidities in the ep-laboratory range -1 < ηjet < 2 and refer to jets at the hadron level with a cone radius of one unit in the η - φ plane. These results correspond to quasi-real photoproduction at centre-of-mass energies in the range 130-270 GeV and, approximately, for jet pseudorapidities in the interval -3 < ηjet(γρ CMS) < 0. These measurements cover a new kinematic regime of the partonic structure of the photon, at typical scales up to ∼300 GeV2 and photon fractional momenta down to xγ ∼ 10-2. Leading logarithm parton shower Monte Carlo calculations, which include both resolved and direct processes and use the predictions of currently available parametrisations of the photon parton distributions, describe in general the shape and magnitude of the measured ηjet and ETjet distributions.

The exclusive production of $\rho^0$ mesons in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering has been studied using the ZEUS detector. Cross sections have been measured in the range $7 < Q^2 < 25$ GeV$^2$ for $\gamma^*p$ centre of mass (c.m.) energies from 40 to 130 GeV. The $\gamma^*p \to \rho^0 p$ cross section exhibits a $Q^{-(4.2 \pm 0.8 ^{+1.4}_{-0.5})}$ dependence and both longitudinally and transversely polarised $\rho^0$'s are observed. The $\gamma^*p \to \rho^0 p$ cross section rises strongly with increasing c.m. energy, when compared with NMC data at lower energy, which cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. The data are compared with perturbative QCD calculations where the rise in the cross section reflects the increase in the gluon density at low $x$. the gluon density at low $x$., Comment: 22 pages, latex, 4 figures appended

This paper reports a search for excited electrons at the HERA electron-proton collider. In a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 26 nb−, no evidence was found for any resonant state decaying into e−γ, νW− or e−Z0. Limits on the coupling strength of an excited electron have been determined for masses between 45 and 225 GeV. This study also reports the observation of the wide-angle eγ Compton scattering process.

As a preparation for the ZEUS high resolution calorimeter, sampling calorimeters made from 3.2 mm plates of depleted uranium read out by plastic scintillator of 3 mm and 5 mm thickness have been built. The response of hadrons, electrons and muons has been measured in the energy range between 3 and 100 GeV. In agreement with predictions, the relative response of electrons and hadrons as well as the hadronic energy resolution depend strongly on the thickness of the plastic scintillator. For 3.2 mm depleted uranium and 3 mm thick scintillator we observe over the full energy range equal response for electrons and hadrons; a hadronic energy resolution of 34.5% E[ GeV ] is obtained. Results are given for the spatial resolution for electrons and hadrons. Finally, results from a lead scintillator calorimeter built as a prestudy before uranium plates were available are reported.

An analysis is presented of the reaction K − p → K 0 π − p at 4.2 GeV /c incident momentum, using analytical techniques in fully dimensional phase space. This methods allows to isolate the contributions of the 0+, 1− and 2+ (Kπ) partial waves in various helecity Separating well-understood contributions from the rest, the method is particularly useful for the detection of small effects (≈1% of the total final-state cross section) not visible in the mass distributions: (i) small cross-section contributions of 3− (Kπ partial waves, K∗(1780), are unambiguously isolated; (ii) 3.5σ evidence is given for Σ(1480) in the (p K 0) system; (iii) effects due to a second Kπ P-wave or the possible presence of a doubly peripheral mechanism are discussed. The method furthermore allows simultaneous treatment of the (Kπ) partial waves, pπ) partial waves and their interferences and of a Σ(1765) signal (with spin 5 2 ). While interferences within the (Kπ) and within the (pπ) systems are strongly determining the corresponding distributions, no interference between these systems is needed.

The Kπ− system produced in the reaction Kp → K0π−p at 4.2 GeV/c is studied using high-statistics bubble-chamber data. The spin-parity structure is analysed as a function of the K0π− mass up to 1.52 GeV. Production of K∗(890) and K∗(1420) is observed in helicity-0 and helicity-1 states. Contributions of natural and unnatural parity exchange are present. Considerable S-wave production is observed over the whole mass region considered. We also study the t′ dependence of the K∗(890) and K∗(1420) amplitudes. A comparison of our results on K∗(890) production with the results of an analysis of charge-exchange K∗(890) production, allows the separation of I = 0 and I = 1 exchange amplitudes. Some qualitative remarks are made concerning K∗(1420) production.

A partial-wave analysis of the low-mass (π+π−p) system produced in the reaction K−p → K−(π+π−p) at 4.2 GeV/c incident momentum is performed in order to study the two (π+π−p) enhancements around 1500 and 1700 MeV. It is found that the low-mass (π+π−p) system can be described using the spin-parity states J P = 1 2 + , 3 2 − and 5 2 + only. In the 1500 MeV region contributions are observed from the 1 2 + wave decaying into pϵ and the 3 2 − wave decaying into Δ++π−; in the 1700 MeV region contributions are found from the 1 2 + wave decaying into Δ++π−, the 3 2 − wave decaying into pϵ, and the 5 2 + wave decaying into pϵ.

Results are presented for the quasi two-body hypercharge exchange reactions of the type using data from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment. Total and differential cross sections and the momentum transfer dependence of the meson and hyperon resonance single density matrix elements are discussed. Amplitude analyses are performed for the first two reactions. The results are compared with quark model and duality predictions and with those from other related reactions.

Properties of Σ ± (1385) inclusively produced in 4.2 GeV/ c K − p interactions are studied. Inclusive cross sections are presented together with differential cross sections as functions of x and p t 2 for both Σ + (1385) and Σ − (1385). The complete density matrix for Σ + (1385) production at small momentum transfer is studied as a function of t and of recoil mass MM 2 . Substantial agreement with the predictions of the additive quark model is found. The Σ + (1385) production in the target fragmentation region is studied in the framework of the triple-Regge model.

The backward production of the B(1235) meson is studied in the reaction K−p→Σ−π+ω. This reaction is observed in the final state Σ−π+π+π−π0. A π+ω mass enhancement is visible in the region of the B meson for events with small |u|K− →Σ−) squared four-momentum transfer. The properties of the enhancement agree with those of the B meson. The cross section for K−p→Σ−B+ at 4.15 GeV c incident K− momentum is (3.2 ± 0.5) μb. The backward production of the B meson is compared with similar baryon exchange productions of the A1 and C(Q1) axial vector mesons observed in the same experiment.

A partial-wave analysis and an isospin analysis are presented of the ( K ππ) − systems produced in the reactions K − p → K − π − π + and K − p → K 0 π − π − p u sing the high-statistics bubble-chamber data at 4.2 GeV/ c . The energy dependence of J P = 1 + waves is investigated in a comparison with results at higher energy. The dominant 1 + 0+ ( K ∗ π) with its maximum in the Q 2 (1.4 GeV) region is an almost pure I = 1 2 state. The energy dependence of 1 + 0+ (K ∗ π) at low masses is consistent with pomeron exchange while at higher masses (including the Q 2 region) other natural exchanges are involved. The 1 ∗ 1+ (K ϱ ) has its maximum at about 1.3 GeV. The relative phase between these two 1 + states is consistent with Q 1 −Q 2 contribution to the 1 + state. Properties of the Q resonances are obtained in a fit of a two-resonance model to the 1 + date. There is no clear evidence for the 0 − resonance seen at SLAC.

The reaction of K−p → Σ+(1660)π− was studied in a 65 event/μb sample of Σππ(π), Λππ(π) and pK0π− final states. The main production features observed are that the Σ(1660) decaying into Σππ is mostly Λ(1405)π and is produced only at small t; the Σ(1660) decaying into Σπ shows both forward and backward production. This confirms earlier results suggesting the existence of two Σ(1660) resonances. An Adair analysis and a (model-dependent) moments analysis find a J = 32 preference for the Σ+ (1660)→ Λ(1405)π+ → Σ+π−π+; a Dalitz-Miller analysis of the decay Σ+(1660) → Λ(1405)π+ → Σ−π+π+ determines JP to be 32−. For the Σ+(1660) → Σ0π+ a moments analysis suggests J = 32. Branching ratios are determined, which (with the exceptation of the Λ(1405)π mode) are in reasonable agreement with results from formation experiments for the JP = 32− Σ(1660) resonance. We compare our branching ratios with SU(3) and SU(6) predictions; the latter comparison suggests that, unless there is strong configuration mixing, Σ(1660) → Λ(1405)π, if 32−, cannot be a member of the (70, 1−) multiplet.

A partial wave analysis of the K 0 π + π − system produced in the charge exchange reaction K − p → ( K 0 π + π − ) n at 4.2 GeV/ c has been performed both as a function of Kππ mass and of t ′. The 1 + S wave forms the largest contribution to the K ππ system and peaks at roughly the same mass as the Q in diffractive K ππ production. The polarization properties of the 1 + S ( K ∗ π) and 1 + S (Kϱ) waves differ fromt those of the diffractive 1 + wave. There is some evidence for a resonance contribution to 1 + S ( K ∗ π) . The strong 2 + wave the K ∗ (1420) and the K ϱ/ K ∗ ϱ decay branching ratio determined to be 0.36±0.10. An enhancement with spin-parity 1 − is observed under K ∗ (1420) .

π − ω interference is studied in the reactions K − p → π + π − (Λ 0 , ϵ) at 4.2 GeV/ c using data from a high statistics experiments in the CERN 2m HBC. The phenomenon is analysed in terms of the conventional formalism as well as in terms of a new model for π − ω interference proposed by Earles and Srivastava. Satisfactory agreement with the data is found for both models. The rate of ω → 2π obtained in the latter model is in agreement with the VMD (Vector Meson Dominance) prediction for ω → γ → ϱ → 2π.

A 2.5 standard deviation signal is observed for the decay K ∗− (1420) → K ∗− (892)π + π − . From this signal a partial width of 13.0 ± 5.0 MeV for the decay mode K ∗ (1420)→ K ∗ (892)ππ is deduced under the assumption that the ππ system is in an I = 1 state. For the rare decay mode K ∗ (892)→ K ππ no signal is observed. The following upper limits can be given for the decay widths: Γ K ∗− (892) → K − π + π − keV , Γ K ∗− (892) → K 0 π − π 0 keV , Γ K ∗0 (892) → K 0 π + π − keV .

We report on the results of a partial-wave analysis of the 3π system produced by baryon exchange in the reaction K − p→ Σ − π + π + π − at 4.2 GeV/ c . We confirm the existence of an enhancement in the 1 + S( ϱπ ) wave as previously established from a Dalitz plot analysis of the same data. The phase variation of this wave is found to be consistent with that expected for a resonance and thus the enhancement is identified with A 1 production. No clear signal for this state is found in either the reaction K − p→ Σ + π + π + π − π − or K − p→ Λπ + π − π 0 . We also find production via baryon exchange of the A 2 in all three reactions and the ω and ω ∗ (1975) in the third reaction.

The photoproduction reaction γp → μ+ μ-p has been studied in ep interactions using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 43.2pb-1. The Υ meson has been observed in photoproduction for the first time. The sum of the products of the elastic Υ(1S), Υ(2S),Υ(3S) photoproduction cross sections with their respective branching ratios is determined to be 13.3 ± 6.0(stat.)-2.3+2.7(syst.) pb at a mean photon-proton centre of mass energy of 120 GeV. The cross section is above the prediction of a perturbative QCD model. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Differential dijet cross sections have been measured with the ZEUS detector for photoproduction events in which the hadronic final state containing the jets is separated with respect to the outgoing proton direction by a large rapidity gap. The cross section has been measured as a function of the fraction of the photon (ϰγOBS) and pomeron (βOBS) momentum participating in the production of the dijet system. The observed ϰγOBS dependence shows evidence for the presence of a resolved- as well as a direct-photon component. The measured cross section da/dβOBS increases as βOBS increases indicating that there is a sizeable contribution to dijet production from those events in which a large fraction of the pomeron momentum participates in the hard scattering. These cross sections and the ZEUS measurements of the diffractive structure function can be described by calculations based on parton densities in the pomeron which evolve according to the QCD evolution equations and include a substantial hard momentum component of gluons in the pomeron.

We report the first observation of charmed mesons with the ZEUS detector at HERA using the decay channel ${\rm D}^{*+}\rightarrow (\Do \rightarrow {\rm K}^-\pi^+)\pi^+$ (+ c.c.). Clear signals in the mass difference $\Delta M$=$M$(D$^*$)--$M$(D$^0)$ as well as in the $M(K\pi)$ distribution at the D$^0$ mass are found. The $ep$ cross section for inclusive \DSpm\ production with $Q^2, Comment: 19 pages, latex, 3 figures appended as uuencoded file
