Abstract

In this work we present a search for (solar) chameleons with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). This novel experimental technique, in the field of dark energy research, exploits both the chameleon coupling to matter (βm) and to photons (βγ) via the Primakoff effect. By reducing the X-ray detection energy threshold used for axions from 1 keV to 400 eV CAST became sensitive to the converted solar chameleon spectrum which peaks around 600 eV. Even though we have not observed any excess above background, we can provide a 95% C.L. limit for the coupling strength of chameleons to photons of βγ≲1011 for 1

Abstract

Solidly Mounted Resonators (SMRs) for high frequency RF filters and sensing applications often display spurious resonances that distort their frequency response. In this work, we try to identify the origin of spurious resonances accompanying the main series resonances in AlN-based SMRs with the help of modified Butterworth Van Dyke (BVD) and Mason’s models. By manufacturing SMRs of different sizes and shapes and studying the influence of the position of the electrical probing spot, we have demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally that devices with larger areas are more likely to display these additional peaks. Our updated models accurately simulate the frequency response of the SMRs, revealing that spurious peaks are mostly related to the resistance of the electrodes. Our study clarifies the origin of the spurious resonances and offers solutions for both, the optimal design and measurement method of SMRs. This work was supported in part by the UPC University. Abstract

The exploration of the universe has recently entered a new era thanks to the multimessenger paradigm, characterized by a continuous increase in the quantity and quality of experimental data that is obtained by the detection of the various cosmic messengers (photons, neutrinos, cosmic rays and gravitational waves) from numerous origins. They give us information about their sources in the universe and the properties of the intergalactic medium. Moreover, multi-messenger astronomy opens up the possibility to search for phenomenological signatures of quantum gravity. On the one hand, the most energetic events allow us to test our physical theories at energy regimes which are not directly accessible in accelerators; on the other hand, tiny effects in the propagation of very high energy particles could be amplified by cosmological distances. After decades of merely theoretical investigations, the possibility of obtaining phenomenological indications of Planck-scale effects is a revolutionary step in the quest for a quantum theory of gravity, but it requires cooperation between different communities of physicists (both theoretical and experimental). Abstract

BornAgain is a free and open-source multi-platform software framework for simulating and fitting X-ray and neutron reflectometry, off-specular scattering, and grazing-incidence small-angle scattering (GISAS). This paper concentrates on GISAS., BornAgain is a free and open-source multi-platform software framework for simulating and fitting X-ray and neutron reflectometry, off-specular scattering, and grazing-incidence small-angle scattering (GISAS). This paper concentrates on GISAS. Support for reflectometry and off-specular scattering has been added more recently, is still under intense development and will be described in a later publication. BornAgain supports neutron polarization and magnetic scattering. Users can define sample and instrument models through Python scripting. A large subset of the functionality is also available through a graphical user interface. This paper describes the software in terms of the realized non-functional and functional requirements. The web site https://www.bornagainproject.org/ provides further documentation.

Abstract

In this paper we present an updated version of the well-known one dimensional model for Solidly Mounted Resonators (SMRs) based on Aluminum Nitride (AIN) for harsh environments at 2.4 GHz in sensing applications. Our model covers from 22°C up to 422°C and presents this performance. Qa=900,Or=350 and keff=6.17% at 22°C to a Qa=380,Qr=150 and keff=5.48% at 422°C Also we have verified our model using measurements from fabricated SMRs with an acoustic reflector of seven alternating layers of low and high acoustic impedance. Abstract

Beam facing elements of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) Linear Particle Accelerator prototype (LIPAc) must stop 5–40 MeV D+ ions with a peak current of 125 mA. The duty cycle of the beam loading varies from 0.1% to 100% (CW), depending on the device, with the ions being stopped in the first hundreds microns of the beam facing material. For intermediate duty cycles up to CW, the thermal load can be considered a heat flux load on the boundary, but this approximation gets too conservative as the duty cycle is reduced because the thermal diffusion becomes more important. Instant heat flux produced by the beam can reach up to 3 GW/m2 in elements such as the beam dump and slits during short times of hundredths of microseconds. In these cases, the accuracy of the volumetric heat generation is critical for obtaining realistic results. Meshfree Galerkin methods discretize a continuum using scattered nodes. As opposed to FEM, no predefined connectivity is needed between the nodes, so C∞ (infinitely differentiable) locally supported shape functions can be used to approximate both the trial and the test functions. This feature makes these type of methods well suited for those problems where the domain experiences very large deformations or has high gradients of the state variables. Radial basis (RBF) and moving least squares (MLS) functions have been applied to the simulation of complex nonlinear mechanical problems involving large strains and displacements (e.g. flexible multibody dynamics). When compared to Finite Element Method (FEM), they present higher robustness under large strains and a better precision for the same computer calculation time when dealing with rough discretizations. All these results have been previously shown in [3] . The experience gained with those applications and the reproductivity characteristics of the shape functions suggest that the number of degrees of freedom needed for a precise analysis of shallow volumetric heat loads can be drastically reduced from that of the usual FEM approach. We describe the development and implementation of a coupled nonlinear thermo-mechanical formulation which takes into account the particularities of the meshfree discretization. Numerical experiments of beam facing elements are presented and compared with FEM results.

Resumen: Introducción: La hiperuricemia secundaria al síndrome de lisis tumoral (SLT) es una complicación importante en neoplasias con rápida proliferación y destrucción celular.El objetivo del estudio fue comparar la eficacia de la rasburicasa con la del alopurinol en la reducción de los niveles plasmáticos de ácido úrico, creatinina y fósforo en niños con SLT. Pacientes y método: Se realizó un estudio comparativo observacional no aleatorizado del tratamiento con alopurinol o rasburicasa en 32 niños con enfermedad oncohematológica ingresados en la unidad de cuidados intensivos pediátricos con SLT establecido o alto riesgo de desarrollarlo. Desde enero de 1991 hasta enero de 2003 16 pacientes recibieron alopurinol (10mg/kg/día cada 8h) y desde febrero de 2003 hasta junio de 2009 16 pacientes recibieron rasburicasa (0,2mg/kg/día, una dosis diaria). Se determinaron los niveles plasmáticos de ácido úrico, creatinina y fósforo previo al tratamiento y a las 4, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72 y 96h. Resultados: Los niveles basales de ácido úrico fueron similares en ambos grupos. Abstract

Carbon fuelling experiments have been performed in ECRH TJ-II plasmas by injecting C 2 H 4 (ethylene) at several radial positions through gas injection ports located on poloidal diagnosted limiters. Simultaneous plasma edge characterization has been performed with atomic beams (He, Li) and by emission spectroscopy. From comparisons of plasmas having He and H as the main species it has been determined that physical sputtering in the interaction region between the plasma and the vacuum vessel is the source of intrinsic carbon contamination. Target plasmas with a range of magnetic configurations and having different edge topologies have been also used. In particular, configurations with rational numbers that result in island chains at the edge have been explored for possible application as ‘divertor-type’ plasmas. Fuelling efficiencies of a few percent for injected carbon have been deduced and clear enhanced screening for chemically bounded carbon is observed to occur in the presence of peripheral magnetic islands.

Abstract

Clinical and pathological features are described in two young Canary goats with chronic renal disease. The kidneys were characterized pathologically by interstitial fibrosis, interstitial infiltrates of mononuclear cells, tubular dilation, cystic glomerular atrophy and immature glomeruli and tubules. The clinical and pathological findings suggest that these goats had dysplasia of the kidneys. These cases may represent the first report of renal dysplasia in goats, and discuss the pathogenetic significance and comparative pathology of the lesions, important for differential diagnosis of this process to become a familial (inherited) disease. This report indicates that renal dysplasia may be an important cause of renal failure in young goats and it should be considered among congenital disorders of goats.

Abstract

We present the results of a search for a high-energy axion emission signal from 7Li (0.478 MeV) and D(p,gamma)3He (5.5 MeV) nuclear transitions using a low-background gamma-ray calorimeter during Phase I of the CAST experiment. These so-called "hadronic axions" could provide a solution to the long-standing strong-CP problem and can be emitted from the solar core from nuclear M1 transitions. This is the first such search for high-energy pseudoscalar bosons with couplings to nucleons conducted using a helioscope approach. Abstract

Objective To evaluate the risk of hyponatremia following administration of hypotonic (HT) or isotonic (IT) fluids in postoperative paediatric patients. Methods Randomised controlled trial phase IV. Surgical paediatric patients who required IV fluids for at least 6 h, aged 6 months to 15 years, >6 kg weight, serum sodium 130–150 mEq/L at admission were included. Patients were randomised to receive 5% dextrose 0,3% saline solution (HT) or 5% dextrose 0,9% saline solution (IT). We analysed plasma levels of sodium, calcium and potassium on admission, 8, 24, 48 h and PICU discharge. Statistics analysis p Results 137 patients were included, 66 HT and 71 IT. Baseline characterics were similar in both groups. The highest frequency of hyponatremia occurs at 8 h (20.5%) and 24 h (27.3%) of income. Patients receiving HT fluid have at greater risk of developing hyponatremia than those receiving IT fluid at 8, 24 h and at discharge. Sodium leves are shown in table. The risk is 12,5 (OR 12,5 95% 3,49- 45.1) times higher at 8 h and 5,4 (1,28–23,37) times higher at 24 h. Severe hyponatremia ( Conclusions Postoperative paediatric patient have more risk of hyponatremia if they receive an HT fluid. Calcium and potassium supplements are not needed at least in the first 24 h.

Abstract

We study the presence of an additional peak appearing at the series resonance of SMRs due to the resistance of thin metallic electrodes, especially relevant in devices with large area. To properly account for this effect, we have modified the traditional Mason and BVD models by adding a parallel branch with different series resistors. Finally, we validated these models with fabricated resonators. This work is important for SMRs sensing applications as the presence of the spurious peak can distort the response of the sensor by limiting its resolution and limit of detection.

Many improvements of the design from former phases are implemented, particularly a reduction of beam losses and operational costs thanks to the superconducting accelerator concept, the re-location of the quench tank outside the test cell (TC) with a reduction of tritium inventory and a simplification on its replacement in case of failure, the separation of the irradiation modules from the shielding block gaining irradiation flexibility and enhancement of the remote handling equipment reliability and cost reduction, and the water cooling of the liner and biological shielding of the TC, enhancing the efficiency and economy of the related sub-systems. In addition, the maintenance strategy has been modified to allow a shorter yearly stop of the irradiation operations and a more careful management of the irradiated samples. The design of the IFMIF plant is intimately linked with the EVA phase carried out since the entry into force of IFMIF/EVEDA in June 2007. These last activities and their on-going accomplishment have been thoroughly described elsewhere (Knaster J et al [19]), which, combined with the present paper, allows a clear understanding of the maturity of the European–Japanese international efforts. This released IFMIF Intermediate Engineering Design Report (IIEDR), which could be complemented if required concurrently with the outcome of the on-going EVA, will allow decision making on its construction and/or serve as the basis for the definition of the next step, aligned with the evolving needs of our fusion community.
