Abstract

One of the main challenges of tissue engineering in dentistry is to replace bone and dental tissues with strategies or techniques that simulate physiological tissue repair conditions. This systematic review of in vitro studies aimed to evaluate the influence of the addition of nanohydroxyapatite (NHap) to scaffolds on cell proliferation and osteogenic and odontogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells. In vitro studies on human stem cells that proliferated and differentiated into odontogenic and osteogenic cells in scaffolds containing NHap were included in this study. Searches in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, OpenGrey, ProQuest, and Cochrane Library electronic databases were performed. The total of 333 articles was found across all databases. After reading and analyzing titles and abstracts, 8 articles were selected for full reading and extraction of qualitative data. Results showed that despite the large variability in scaffold composition, NHap-containing scaffolds promoted high rates of cell proliferation, increased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity during short culture periods, and induced differentiation, as evidenced by the high expression of genes involved in osteogenesis and odontogenesis. However, further studies with greater standardization regarding NHap concentration, type of scaffolds, and evaluation period are needed to observe possible interference of these criteria in the action of NHap on the proliferation and differentiation of human stem cells.

Abstract

This study reports the first occurrence of Muscidifurax raptorellus (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) in Brazil. Chicken manure samples, collected at two-week interval, were taken to the laboratory and the pupae were extracted by the method of flotation. Each pupa was placed in capsules of colorless gelatin until the emergence of dipterous or their parasitoids. In the study, ten pupae of Fannia pusio (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Fanniidae) were obtained, two of which yielded the parasitoid M. raptorellus . The percentage of parasitism was 5.0%.

Abstract

Very-high Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astroparticle physics is a relatively young field, and observations over the past decade have surprisingly revealed almost two hundred VHE emitters which appear to act as cosmic particle accelerators. These sources are an important component of the Universe, influencing the evolution of stars and galaxies. At the same time, they also act as a probe of physics in the most extreme environments known - such as in supernova explosions, and around or after the merging of black holes and neutron stars. However, the existing experiments have provided exciting glimpses, but often falling short of supplying the full answer. A deeper understanding of the TeV sky requires a significant improvement in sensitivity at TeV energies, a wider energy coverage from tens of GeV to hundreds of TeV and a much better angular and energy resolution with respect to the currently running facilities. The next generation gamma-ray observatory, the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), is the answer to this need. In this talk I will present this upcoming observatory from its design to the construction, and its potential science exploitation. CTAO will allow the entire astronomical community to explore a new discovery space that will likely lead to paradigm-changing breakthroughs. In particular, CTA has an unprecedented sensitivity to short (sub-minute) timescale phenomena, placing it as a key instrument in the future of multi-messenger and multi-wavelength time domain astronomy. Abstract

The study of dispersion phenomena in electromagnetic waves reflected by lossy materials at infrared and lower frequencies is a topic which finds a number of applications in microwave and optical engineering. Metamaterials and metasurfaces, for example, are dispersive media which feature unique abilities to control electromagnetic fields, and this has stimulated the development of new and promising applications in the areas of antenna technology, Communications and Electromagnetic Compatibility. A number of other applications can also be found in Optics and Optoelectronic device technologies. From the educational point of view, the learning process of the fundamental principles behind these topics is challenging for both undergraduate and doctoral students. This is in part due to the need of conciliating concepts and mathematical developments that are covered in both Optics and Electromagnetics courses from different perspectives and nomenclature.

Abstract

The earth electrical resistance (R ES ) plays a major role in the safety of both personnel and instrumentation. The purpose of a ground is to provide a safe path for the dissipation of fault currents, lightning strikes, static discharges… To study and test systems in the laboratory we need tools to reproduce real conditions in terms of structure design and soil profiles, which are important in these types of installation. A conditioning fact is that it is known that R ES is roughly inversely proportional to soil conductivity, so the design must consider the characteristics of the terrain. Finite Element simulations (FEM) have demonstrated that are a very powerful software resource to study different optimization strategies to reduce the R ES . Our research work has used COMSOL Multiphysics software to reproduce conditions in a high resistivity soil and different earth electrical structures of electrodes has been proved to evaluate the improvements that should be adopted to minimize R ES value [1].

RESUMEN: Introducción: La terapia fotodinámica (TF) incluye una combinación de una fuente de luz y un agente fotosensibilizante para inducir dano ̃ tisular a través de la generación de oxígeno singlete. Aunque la TF se ha aprobado para otras indicaciones, su uso en el fotodano ̃ facial resulta incierto. Objetivo: Valorar la eficacia y seguridad de la TF en el fotoenvejecimiento de la piel del rostro. Métodos: Se incluyeron todos los ensayos clínicos aleatorizados (ECA) que evalúan la eficacia y seguridad de cualquier forma de TF tópica para el tratamiento del fotodano ̃ facial (dermatoheliosis) o fotoenvejecimiento en pacientes mayores de 18 anos. ̃ Se consideró la TF que utiliza cualquier dosis de agente fotosensibilizante, así como cualquier fuente lumínica. Los comparadores fueron: exfoliación química, luz pulsada intensa (IPL), diodo emisor de luz (LED), dermoabrasión o microdermoabrasión, láseres ablativos o no ablativos, inyectables, cirugía, placebo y/o ausencia de tratamiento. Se llevó a cabo una búsqueda sistemática en las bases de datos de los registros de PubMed, Embase, Lilacs, Google Scholar y ECA. Resultados: La búsqueda se realizó hasta el mes de mayo de 2016. Cuatro autores seleccionaron y valoraron de manera independiente la calidad metodológica de cada ECA. Con arreglo a los criterios de inclusión, se incluyeron 12 estudios (6 ensayos sobre aminolevulinato [ALA] y 6 sobre metiloaminolevulinato [MAL]), aunque la mayoría de ellos contenían limitaciones metodológicas, particularmente en cuanto a la descripción de la aleatorización y la valoración a ciegas de los asesores de los pacientes/resultados. Discusión y conclusiones: Los resultados generales indicaron que la TF, tanto con ALA como con MAL, era una terapia efectiva y segura para el tratamiento del fotodano ̃ facial, aunque se encontró evidencia de alta calidad principalmente en los estudios realizados sobre MAL. ABSTRACT: Introduction: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves the combination of a light source and a photosensitizing agent to induce tissue damage via the generation of singlet oxygen. Although topical PDT has been approved for other indications, its use in facial photodamage is uncertain. Aims: To assess the efficacy and safety of PDT in facial skin photoaging. Methods: All randomized clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy and safety of any form of topical PDT for the treatment of facial photodamage (dermatoheliosis) or photoaging in patients older than 18 years, were included. Photodynamic-therapy using any topical photo- sensitizing agent at any dose, and with any light-source, were considered. Comparators were chemical exfoliation, intense pulsed light (IPL), light emitting diodes (LED), dermabrasion or microdermabrasion, ablative or non-ablative lasers, injectables, surgery, placebo and/or no treatment. A systematic search in PubMed, Embase, Lilacs, Google Scholar and RCT’s registry databases, was performed. Results: Search was conducted up to May 4th 2016. Four authors independently selected and assessed methodological quality of each RCT. According to inclusion criteria, twelve studies were included (6 aminolevulinate (ALA) trials and 6 methyl aminolevulinate (MAL) trials), but the majority of them had methodological constraints particularly in randomization description and patients/outcome assessors blindness. Discussion and conclusions: Overall results indicated that PDT either with ALA or with MAL was effective and safe for facial photodamage treatment, but high quality of evidence was found mainly for MAL studies. Abstract

There is no consensus about the role of adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in the management of Fournier’s gangrene. The aim of this study was to compare the evolution of patients with Fournier’s gangrene treated with all classical measures with and without adjuvant HBOT. A retrospective comparative study regarding the evolution of patients treated for Fournier’s gangrene was conducted in two periods. In period I, from 1990 to 2002, patients received standard treatments for Fournier’s gangrene, which consisted of surgical debridement, antibiotic therapy and intensive care. In period II, from 2012 to 2019, adjunctive HBOT was added to the classical management strategy. All patients were assigned into four groups according to the anatomical severity classification and the area affected after the first debridement. This classification ensured that the groups could be comparable. The total number of patients in this study was 197, and these patients were divided into control group (118/59.9%) and HBOT group (79/40.1%). The mean age, comorbidities, and anatomical severity classification were similar between the two groups. In period I, 34 out of 118 (28.8%) patients died, while in the HBOT group, 3 out of 77 (3.7%) patients died (P < 0.001). The use of adjuvant HBOT in combination with classical treatment was associated with reduced mortality. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board and the Ethics Committee of Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo, Brazil (No. 08/2018) on May 2, 2018.

Abstract

In this paper, diffraction properties of several gratings are considered on the basis of the Fourier physical theory. Binary gratings with unequal strip width are of particular interest, as well as the case of two interlaced gratings of the same period. Under scope are absorptive gratings, phase gratings, and mixed gratings. Some variants of binary gratings, as the so called Bi-Ronchi gratings (2D-gratings), are also discussed. In particular, phase gratings with absorption (mixed gratings) are also taken into account. The interferograms generated for this type of gratings are shown in this work. As examples, the patterns for a spherical mirror are obtained for different grating parameters and different values of primary aberrations. Some of the resulting relevant properties are remarked. Related experimental works from several structures of the gratings are shown. This study can be used not only for optical testing, but also for light gratings for particle diffraction or to describe diffraction effects of micro-gratings.

Abstract

The study involved 75 autochthonous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) obtained from Valtellina Casera Protected Designation of Origin cheese and provides data on their antibiotic resistance (AR), antimicrobial activity and safety aspects. High biodiversity was revealed, assigning the isolates to 16 species. In the curd Streptococcus thermophilus was predominant, while Enterococcus and the Lactobacillus casei group prevailed in ripened cheese. One Lactobacillus rhamnosus was resistant to penicillin G. The presence of 19 tetracycline-resistant strains indicates that tetracycline resistance is emerging in dairy sources. Seven Enterococcus faecalis, one Lactococcus garvieae and one Lactoc. lactis subsp. lactis showed the presence of the int gene that is responsible for the transfer of tetracycline resistance. Six En. faecalis inhibited Listeria monocytogenes and closely related LAB, and four of these harbored the entAS48 gene. Genes associated with virulence factors were detected in En. faecalis but not in En. faecium. A low spread of AR in wild LAB and a low occurrence of safety hazards in enterococci strains were highlighted. Practical Application In recent years, raw milk cheese have received increasing attention for their microbial biodiversity and as a source of food bio-preservatives, but they could also provide a vehicle for antibiotic resistance. The results of this study showed that wild microbiota of Valtellina Casera cheese is characterized by an important activity inhibiting growth of Listeria monocytogenes. These probably actively contribute to ensure the safety and quality of this cheese. The presence of tetracycline resistance among En. faecalis and Str. thermophilus may indicate that this resistance is emergent in dairy sources, a point that needs further investigation. En. faecium from artisanal Valtellina Casera cheese did not show antibiotic resistance and did not harbor any of the virulence genes associated to the hospital-associated clade according to European Food Safety Authority.

Abstract

The proper evaluation of crustal deformations in the Aswan (Egypt) region is crucial due to the existence of one major artificial structure: the Aswan High Dam. This construction induced the creation of one of the major artificial lakes: Lake Nasser, which has a surface area of about 5200 km 2 with a maximum capacity of 165 km 3 . The lake is nearly 550 km long (more than 350 km within Egypt and the remainder in Sudan) and 35 km across at its widest point. Great attention has focused on this area after the November 14, 1981 earthquake ( M L = 5.7), with its epicenter southwest of the High Dam. In order to evaluate the present-day kinematics of the region, its relationship with increasing seismicity, and the possible influence of the Aswan High Dam operation, a network of 11 GPS sites was deployed in the area. This network has been reobserved every year since 2000 in campaign style. We present here the results of the analysis of the GPS campaign time-series. These time-series are already long enough to derive robust solutions for the motions of these stations. The computed trends are analyzed within the framework of the geophysical and geological settings of this region. We show that the observed displacements are significant, pointing to a coherent intraplate extensional deformation pattern, where some of the major faults (e.g., dextral strike-slip Kalabsha fault and normal Dabud fault) correspond to gradients of the surface deformation field. We also discuss the possible influence of the water load on the long-term deformation pattern.

Abstract

The question of whether reinforcing steel can be protected with activated fly ash cement as effectively as with Portland cement is explored in this study. Corrosion potential (Ecorr) and polarisation resistance (Rp) values for steel electrodes embedded in Portland cement mortar and two fly ash mortars, respectively activated with NaOH and waterglass+NaOH solutions, are monitored. Chloride-free activated fly ash mortars are found to passivate steel reinforcement as speedily and effectively as Portland cement mortars, giving no cause to fear that corrosion may limit the durability of reinforced concrete structures built with these new types of activated fly ash cement. The polarisation curves and the response to short-term anodic current pulses (galvanostatic pulse technique) obtained further corroborate the full and stable passivation of the steel by the concrete manufactured with these binders.

Abstract

Resumen El hidrops fetal temprano es un fenomeno frecuente que forma parte de numerosos procesos patologicos. Sin embargo, la tasa de diagnosticos se encuentrapor debajo de su incidencia. Los hallazgos ecograficos indirectos relacionados con fallo cardiaco de diferente origen son mas frecuentes en el primer trimestre. Es estos casos, el aumento del pliegue nucal sueleser el primer signo ecografico de hidrops temprano.En el estudio realizado sobre 30 casos en los que sedetermino el cariotipo fetal por un pliegue nucal mayor de 3 mm antes de la semana 14 de gestacioncomo indicacion, el indice de cromosomopatias fue del 36,7 frente al 3,1% de cariotipos anormales obtenidos cuando la indicacion fue otra. Ademas, se observo un 50% de anomalias asociadas entre los quepresentaron algun signo temprano de hidrops y un 47% de mortalidad fetal asociada. La medicion delpliegue nucal ofrece la oportunidad de realizar un cribado temprano de aneuploidias, cardiopatias u otrasafecciones fetales.

Abstract

IC level built-in self-test and IEEE 1149.1 boundary-scan architecture offer potential benefits at all phases of a product's life cycle: development, manufacturing, and field deployment. During early model debugging, for example, boundary scan rapidly flushes out structural defects such as solder bridges or opens. During manufacturing test, BIST and boundary scan can improve coverage, reduce test and diagnosis time, and reduce test capital. In the field, embedded boundary-scan and BIST capabilities may facilitate accurate system diagnostics that isolate defects to individual field-replaceable units. Before investing in these design-for-testability features, however, a product development team should carefully consider their costs as well as their benefits. So far, tools for accurately evaluating these economic trade offs have not been available. At Lucent Technologies, therefore, we have developed a framework to guide a cost-benefit analysis of an investment in BIST and/or boundary scan. The framework is in its formative stages and will continue to evolve. BIST and boundary scan affect cost at all levels of product integration and during all phases of the product life cycle. This analysis framework helps developers decide if the benefits are worth the costs.

Abstract

The main problem of the building sector is the limited durability of reinforcing concrete structures under highly aggressive environments due to the corrosion of reinforcements. In order to demonstrate that stainless steels are the adequate solution to avoid corrosion of reinforced concrete structures by contained chlorides, the corrosion behaviour of AISI 304 and AISI 316L stainless steels in mortar with two chloride doses is compared with the corrosion behaviour of three new stainless steels of low Ni content and reduced cost, and with the traditional carbon steel. The lowest chloride contamination (2% Cl-) has been used in this research to provoke corrosion in an active state of reinforcing carbon steel, whereas the highest one (5% Cl-) exceeds all expected levels found in the natural environment, including sea water. The new stainless steels remain in the passive state in mortar specimens with both chloride contents. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The activities concerned with the evaluation, repair and restoration of structures are estimated to amount to 35% of the total volume of the work in the building sector and this continues to increase. The corrosion of rebars in the reinforced concrete structures (RCS) is the main reason for their degradation, so the use of reinforcing stainless steels seems to be one of the possible solutions with most probabilities of solving this problem. In this work, in order to demonstrate the advantages of using reinforcing stainless steels, the corrosion behaviour of AISI 304 and 316 reinforcements embedded in concrete slabs (C35/45 and C60/70 concrete) with two chloride contents are compared with three low-cost and low-Ni austenoferritic stainless steels and with the conventional carbon steel. The lower chloride contamination selected in this research, was enough to cause the corrosion in the active state of the carbon steel reinforcements, whereas the highest one exceeded the expected contamination in the natural environments, including sea media. The metallic materials remaining in the passive state can be considered, from the point of view of corrosion resistance, adequate as reinforcements in the RCS. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd.
