Abstract: The results of a measurement of the proton structure function F_2(x,Q^2)and the virtual photon-proton cross section are reported for momentum transfers squared Q^2 between 0.35 GeV^2 and 3.5 GeV^2 and for Bjorken-x values down to 6 10^{-6} using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1995. The data represent an increase in kinematic reach to lower x and Q^2 values of about a factor of 5 compared to previous H1 measurements. Including measurements from fixed target experiments the rise of F_2 with decreasing x is found to be less steep for the lowest Q^2 values measured. Abstract: A measurement of the inclusive cross section for the deep-inelastic scattering of positrons off protons at HERA is presented at momentum transfers $8.5 \leq Q^2 \leq 35 GeV^2$ and large inelasticity $y = 0.7$, i.e. for the Bjorken-x range $0.00013 \leq x \leq 0.00055$. Using a next-to-leading order QCD fit to the structure function F_2 at lower y values, the contribution of F_2 to the measured cross section at high y is calculated and, by subtraction, the longitudinal structure function F_{L} is determined for the first time with an average value of $F_L=0.52 \pm 0.03 (stat)$^ {+0.25}_{-0.22}$ (syst) at $Q^2=15.4 GeV^2$ and $x=0.000243$., 17 pages, latex, 4 Figures

Abstract: At the electron-proton collider HERA the inclusive D-*+/- meson photoproduction cross section has been measured with the H1 detector in two different, but partly overlapping, kinematical regions. For the first, where [W-gamma p] approximate to 200 GeV and Q(2) < 0.01 GeV2, the result is sigma(gamma p --> c(c) over barX$) = (13.2 +/- 2.2(-1.7-4.8)(+2.1+9.9)) mu b. The second measurement for Q(2) < 4 GeV2 yields sigma(gamma p) --> c(c) over barX$) = (9.3 +/- 2.1(-1.8-3.2)(+1.9+6.9)) mu b at [W-gamma p] approximate to 142 GeV and sigma(gamma p --> c(c) over barX$) = (20.6 +/- 5.5(-3.9-7.2)(+4.3+15.4)) mu b at [W-gamma p] approximate to 230 GeV, respectively. The third error accounts for an additional uncertainty due to the proton and photon parton density parametrizations. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the D-*+/- transverse momentum and rapidity. The results compare reasonably well with next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Evidence for diffractive photoproduction of charm quarks is presented.

Abstract: The total cross sections for the elastic electroproduction of $\rh0$ and $J/\Psi$ mesons for $Q^2$ $>$ 8 GeV$^2$ and $ \simeq 90$ GeV/c$^2$ are measured at HERA with the H1 detector. The measurements are for an integrated electron$-$proton luminosity of $\simeq$~3~pb$^{-1}$. The dependences of the total virtual photon$-$proton ($\gamma^* p$) cross sections on $Q^2$, $W$ and the momentum transfer squared to the proton ($t$), and, for the $\rho$, the dependence on the polar decay angle ($\cos \theta^*$), are presented. The $J/\Psi$ : $\rh0$ cross section ratio is determined. The results are discussed in the light of theoretical models and of the interplay of hard and soft physics processes.

5. Neogene Full Cycle Shelf/Slope/Basin System Analogue, West of Shetlands, UK

Abstract: The availability of a 3D seismic dataset allows for the review of a preserved full cycle shelf-to-slope-to-basin setting from near water bottom Neogene deposits in the West of Shetlands, UK. This goes beyond the 2D interpretations that proliferate most previous technical papers. The use of 3D seismic data visualisation allows a comprehensive review of imaging and interpreting of the key geomorphologies associated with shelf, slope and deep water basin settings. The resolution of the Neogene sediments is enhanced by creating and analysing the principal seismic attributes Sweetness and Spectral Decomposition that are conducive for optimal stratigraphic interpretations. The Neogene analogue has invaluable reference material to pursue potential reservoir systems of the older Palaeocene Vaila sands in the West of Shetlands, and also worldwide.

Abstract: Measurements of the scattered electron energy spectrum and the differential cross sections dσ/d log(x) and dσ/dQ2 for inclusive neutral current deep inelastic electron-proton scattering are presented. The data were obtained with the H1 detector at HERA during its first running period in which 26.7 GeV electrons collided with 820 GeV protons. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.3 nb−1 and allow the first studies of the structure of the proton at values of x down to 10−4 for Q2 > 5 GeV2.

Abstract: We present first results on the total photoproduction cross section measurement with the H1 detector at HERA. The data were extracted from low Q2 collisions of 26.7 GeV electrons with 820 GeV protons. The γp total cross section has been measured by two independent methods in the γp center of mass energy range from 90 to 290 GeV. For an average center of mass energy of 195 GeV a value of σtot (γp) = 159 ± 7 (stat.) ± 20 (syst.) μb was obtained.

Abstract: We report on the investigation of the final state in interactions of quasi-real photons with protons. The data were taken with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider. Evidence for hard interactions is seen in both single particle spectra and jet formation. The data can best be described by inclusion of resolved photon processess as predicted by QCD.

10. Smart medical systems

Abstract: In the past century, enormous advances in medical knowledge and technology have aided physicians in the care of patients, with dramatic reductions in morbidity and mortality. As medicine evolves, diagnostic and therapeutic techniques are expanding the human-machine interface and changing the ways medicine is practiced. Looking ahead, medical systems are being developed that require very little direct involvement of physicians. An extreme example is the emergence of "smart" medical systems that are being prototyped for remote harsh environments, including space. Some of the considerations and accomplishments for developing such systems are described in this paper.

Abstract: General aspects of the H1 detector at the electron-proton storage ring HERA as well as technical descriptions of the magnet, luminosity system, trigger, slow-control, data acquisition and off-line data handling are given. The three major components of the detector, the tracking, calorimeter and muon detectors, will be described in a forthcoming article. The present paper describes the detector that was used from 1992 to the end of 1994. After this a major upgrade of some components was undertaken. Some performance figures from luminosity runs at HERA during 1993 and 1994 are given.

Abstract: We present a search for excited electrons, neutrinos and quarks using the H1 detector at the $ep$ collider HERA, based on data taken in 1994 with an integrated luminosity of 2.75 pb$^{-1}$. Radiative decays of excited quarks and neutrinos have been investigated as well as decays of excited electrons into all possible electroweak gauge bosons. Abstract: We introduce a network of networks (NoN) model to solve image regularization problems. The method is motivated by the fact that natural image formation involves both local processing and globally coordinated parallel processing. Both forms are readily implemented using an NoN architecture. The modeling is very powerful in that it achieves high-quality adaptive processing, and it reduces the computational difference between inhomogeneous and homogeneous conditions. This method is able to provide fast, quality imaging in early vision, and its replicating structure and sparse connectivity readily lend themselves to hardware implementations.

Abstract: The transition between photoproduction and deep-inelastic scattering is investigated in jet production at the HERA ep collider, using data collected by the H1 experiment. Measurements of the differential inclusive jet cross-sections dsigep/dEt* and dsigmep/deta*, where Et* and eta* are the transverse energy and the pseudorapidity of the jets in the virtual photon-proton centre of mass frame, are presented for 0 < Q2 < 49 GeV2 and 0.3 < y < 0.6. The interpretation of the results in terms of the structure of the virtual photon is discussed. The data are best described by QCD calculations which include a partonic structure of the virtual photon that evolves with Q2., 20 pages, 5 Figures

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra of charged particles produced in deep inelastic scattering are measured as a function of the kinematic variables x_B and Q2 using the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA. The data are compared to different parton emission models, either with or without ordering of the emissions in transverse momentum. Abstract: A search for leptoquarks at HERA was performed in H1 using 1994 $e^+ p$ data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about $3 \pb^{-1}$. Single leptoquarks were searched for in direct positron-quark fusion processes taking into account possible decays into lepton-quark pairs of either the first, the second, or the third generation. No significant deviation from the Standard Model predictions is found in the various final states studied and mass dependent exclusion limits are derived on the Yukawa couplings of the leptoquarks. Compared with earlier results from an analysis of $e^-p$ data, exclusion limits are considerably improved for leptoquarks which could be produced via $e^+$-{\it valence~quark} fusion. For leptoquarks with lepton flavour conserving couplings, masses up to $275 \GeV$ (depending on the leptoquark type) are excluded for coupling values larger than $\sqrt{ 4 \pi \alpha_{em}}$. For leptoquarks with lepton flavour violating couplings, masses up to $225 \GeV$ are excluded for the first time in a direct search for couplings with leptons of the second or third generation larger than $\sqrt{ 4 \pi \alpha_{em}}$. Fourteen possible combinations of couplings are studied and stringent exclusion limits comparable or better than any existing direct or indirect limits are obtained for each leptoquark type., Comment: 16 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded file

Parton cross sections are extracted from the data by an unfolding method using leading order parton-jet correlations of a QCD generator. Abstract: A measurement is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, of the contribution of diffractive interactions to deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering. The diffractive contribution to the proton structure function is evaluated as a function of the appropriate deep-inelastic scattering variables using a class of deep-inelastic ep scattering events with no hadronic energy flow in an interval of pseudo-rapidity adjacent to the proton beam direction. The dependence of this contribution on x-pomeron is consistent with both a diffractive interpretation and a factorisable ep diffractive cross section. A first measurement of the deep-inelastic structure of the pomeron in the form of a factorised structure function is presented. This structure function is observed to be consistent with scale invariance., 16 pages, latex, including 3 figures

21. A Kinetic Approach to Hierarchical Organization in Biomedical Systems

Abstract: Many biomedical systems possess features of multi-level or hierarchical organization. To investigate how structure and behaviour are related in such systems, a simple two level time dependent model is proposed and studied using the methods of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Analytic expressions are derived which characterize the model in terms of the intra-level and interlevel couplings, environl1lental conditions, and time scales of interest. The model is shown to possess a continuum of global behaviours, ranging from those of a control hierarchy, wherein one level slaves another, to a hierarchy whcrein each structural level is associated with an essentially autonomous behaviour.

Abstract: The scale dependence of the evolution of photoproduction cross sections with the photon-proton centre of mass energy W is studied using low Q^2 < 0.01 GeV^2 e^+p interactions collected by the H1 experiment at HERA. The value of the largest transverse momentum of a charged particle in the photon fragmentation region is used to define the hard scale. The slope of the $W$ dependence of the cross section is observed to increase steeply with increasing transverse momentum. The result is compared to measurements of the Q^2 evolution of the W dependence of the virtual photon-proton cross section. Interpretations in terms of QCD and in terms of Regge phenomenology are discussed., 13 pages, latex, 3 Figures

Abstract: The first observation of open b production in ep collisions is reported. An event sample containing muons and jets has been selected which is enriched in semileptonic b quark decays. The visible cross section \sigma(ep -> b \bar{b}X -> \mu X') for Q^2 < 1 GeV^2, 0.1 < y < 0.8 is measured to be 0.176+-0.016(stat.)+0.026-0.017(syst.) nb for the muons to be detected in the range 35 deg < \theta^\mu < 130 deg and \pt^\mu > 2.0 GeV in the laboratory frame. The expected visible cross section based on a NLO QCD calculation is 0.104+-0.017 nb. The cross sections for electroproduction with Q^2 e b\bar{b}X) = 7.1+-0.6(stat.)+1.5-1.3(syst.) nb and \sigma(\gamma p-> b\bar{b} X) = 111+-10(stat.)+23-20(syst.) at an average \sim 180 GeV, respectively., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 0 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B
