Steel silos with corrugated walls are widely used because they allow an increase of the wall buckling resistance, but corrugations affect the material flow and the forces applied over the walls. Silo design codes propose a method to estimate the friction on corrugated walls, but important aspects of the problem are not considered. This paper presents DEM simulations for a flat-bottom silo with different corrugation depths. Results show the differences in the friction of particles stored in a silo against a corrugated wall from a smooth wall, thus producing changes in many aspects such as flow, velocity of particles or friction coefficient. Flow rates and velocity of particles were higher for models with larger corrugation depths, especially for the initial period of discharge. Greater mobilization of particle-to-particle friction coefficient and higher values for contact normal forces were also detected as the value of the depth of the corrugation increased.

This paper presents the optimisation by genetic algorithms of the members and joints of heavy timber trusses fastened by mechanical joints with dowels and metal plates. This is achieved by programming in Matlab twenty-four elitist genetic algorithm models which, in combining different variables, provide an estimate of the geometry of the truss, the cross-section dimensions, and the number of dowels required. Trusses with various numbers of nodes are evaluated, with 6, 10, and 14 segments in the top chord. After validation of the results with a preliminary bibliography, an analysis is made of the effect of slipping of the joints in accordance with current standards, studying how such slipping affects the dimensioning of the trusses. Subsequently, to achieve the greatest economy in their design, the depth of the trusses is optimised. Genetic algorithms constitute an effective optimisation tool for the design of heavy timber trusses. They led to reduced costs compared with previous techniques described in the literature. In each type of truss studied, the optimal volume of timber was very similar for all cases, regardless of the number of upper chord members or joint slip. The cost of the truss therefore depended strongly on the number of joints, with the most economical solution being that with the fewest joints. Joint slip was important when the serviceability limit state was determinant, with its inclusion increasing the cost.

El perfil de alumnado de nuevo ingreso en el Grado en Ingeniería Forestal y del Medio Natural (IFMN) de la UEX es, con frecuencia, el de un titulado de ciclo formativo de grado superior con importantes carencias en las materias de tipo técnico, lo cual reduce su motivación para el estudio de éstas. Por otra parte, en el Grado en IFMN del Centro Universitario de Plasencia existe una preocupación por la innovación docente (llevada a cabo a través de varios proyectos competitivos) para lograr una mejor formación del alumnado tanto en competencias técnicas como en competencias transversales (entre las que se incluye la inteligencia emocional) y, paralelamente, mejorar las tasas de éxito y rendimiento de las materias implicadas. En este sentido, se ha diseñado una estrategia innovadora, bajo el lema general de 'FOREXPO: enseñando se aprende más', consistente en una exposición interactiva sobre Espacios Naturales Protegidos, Física y Medio Ambiente, que es ofrecida por los estudiantes universitarios de Ingeniería Forestal a los escolares de la ciudad de Plasencia, que visitan dicha exposición cada primavera, desde 2013, para aprender de manera directa y amena a través de maquetas y exposiciones de tipo interactivo donde pueden experimentar, observar, etc.La novedad de esta estrategia denominada FOREXPO es que combina diversas metodologías innovadoras como el ABP (Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas, ya que los estudiantes universitarios deben confeccionar las maquetas o exposiciones con un objetivo final), el ApS (puesto que en su aprendizaje realizan un servicio a la sociedad, como es mostrar ciencia cercana y divertida a los escolares de primaria de la ciudad de Plasencia), el “learning by teaching” o enseñando se aprende más (pues les empodera y motiva enormemente poder hablar a un público no especializado sobre cuestiones científicas de una cierta dificultad como la Física ambiental) y, por último, supone una colaboración entre dos materias del Grado, de forma que no se funcione de manera estanca.Esta experiencia innovadora es muy bien valorada por los estudiantes universitarios, tanto por la autoestima científica que les proporciona en materias difíciles como Física, como por las competencias transversales adquiridas al realizar las tareas organizativas que el ABP plantea como objetivo secundario. Asimismo, la acogida por parte de los centros educativos de primaria es muy buena en la ciudad, tanto por el contenido científico expuesto como por el buen hacer de los “monitores” universitarios y por la posibilidad de conocer la titulación en una especie de jornada de puertas abiertas que contribuye a difundir también la labor del Ingeniero Forestal en la sociedad, especialmente mediante lo expuesto en la materia de Gestión de Espacios Naturales Protegidos.

This paper presents a finite-element-based analysis of carpentry joints between structural timber members. Currently, the design of these joints is conducted by using simplifying assumptions of the stress distribution and of the distribution of forces on the contacting surfaces, and neglects the effect of contact friction between surfaces. Such unrealistic assumptions affect the computation of stresses and the tensile and compressive stress ratio of the joint. This study presents a more realistic approach by conducting a numerical simulation of the behaviour of carpentry joints, which enables optimisation in the geometric definition of this type of joints. Finite element analysis reveals the importance of the effect of friction between the contacting surfaces. In addition, the angle between the members affects the distribution of stresses along the contacting surfaces.

This paper presents an analysis of carpentry joints between structural timber members based on numerical simulation. In conventional design, simplifying assumptions of the stress distribution and the transmission of forces on the contacting surfaces are made, and the effect of contact friction between surfaces is neglected. Whereas a number of authors have been concerned with other types of joints, such as mechanical or glued joints between timber members, carpentry joints have hardly been subject to numerical simulations. This study presents a more realistic approach to the behaviour of these joints, using the finite element method, which enables further knowledge of the stresses acting on the joint. In addition, the finite element method enables the optimization of the geometric definition of carpentry joints between structural timber members. The numerical simulations performed for framed joints have revealed that friction between contacting surfaces has particular relevance for the behaviour of the joint. The Spanish Technical Building Code, among others, is based on conventional design. Numerical simulations have revealed a high level of safety in such a conventional definition of framed joints. En este artículo se presenta un análisis de uniones por ensamble embarbillado entre piezas de madera estructural basado en el empleo de la simulación numérica. El cálculo convencional se realiza a través de unos supuestos simplificadores de distribución de tensiones y de transmisión de las fuerzas sobre las caras en contacto, al mismo tiempo que se desprecia el efecto del rozamiento por contacto entre ellas. Mientras que existe cierta cantidad de trabajos relacionados con otros tipos de uniones entre piezas de madera, mecánicas, encoladas, etc., las uniones carpinteras o tradicionales apenas han sido objeto de simulaciones numéricas. En este trabajo se presenta una visión más cercana a la realidad del comportamiento de estos ensambles por medio del método de los elementos finitos, lo que permite aproximarse más al conocimiento de los esfuerzos actuantes y buscar una mayor optimización en la definición geométrica de los mismos. Se aprecia en las simulaciones numéricas realizadas que, en este tipo de ensambles, la fricción entre superficies en contacto adquiere una alta importancia en el comportamiento de la unión; al mismo tiempo, el cálculo convencional en el que se basa, entre otros, el Código Técnico Español de la Edificación, deja ampliamente del lado de la seguridad la definición dimensional de estas uniones por ensamble embarbillado.
