We present the results of an experimental and computational study of the physics and chemistry of cavitation-ignition bubble combustion (CIBC), a process that occurs when combustible gaseous mixtures are ignited by the high temperatures found inside a rapidly collapsing bubble. The CIBC process was modeled using a time-dependent compressible fluid-dynamics code that includes finite-rate chemistry. The model predicts that gas-phase reactions within the bubble produce CO and other gaseous by-products of combustion. In addition, heat and mechanical energy release through a bubble volume-expansion phase are also predicted by the model. We experimentally demonstrate the CIBC process using an ultrasonically excited cavitation flow reactor with various hydrocarbon-air mixtures in liquid water. Low concentrations (< 160 ppm) of carbon monoxide (CO) emissions from the ultrasonic reactor were measured, and found to be proportional to the acoustic excitation power. The results of the model were consistent with the measured experimental results. Based on the experimental findings, the computational model, and previous reports of the "micro-diesel effect" in industrial hydraulic systems, we conclude that CIBC is indeed possible and exists in ultrasonically- and hydrodynamically-induced cavitation. Finally, estimates of the utility of CIBC process as a means of powering an idealized heat engine are also presented.

Just after formation, optical fibers are wetted stably with acrylate at capillary numbers routinely exceeding 1000. It is hypothesized that this is possible because of dissolution of air into the liquid coating. A lubrication/boundary integral analysis that includes gas diffusion and solubility is developed. It is applied using conservatively estimated solubility and diffusivity coefficients and solutions are found that are consistent with industry practice and with the hypothesis. The results also agree with the claim of Deneka, Kar & Mensah (1988) that the use of high solubility gases to bathe a wetting line allows significantly greater wetting speeds. The solutions indicate a maximum speed of wetting which increases with gas solubility and with reduction in wetting-channel diameter.

The absence (or reduction) of gravity, can lead to major changes in boiling heat transfer. On Earth, convection has a major effect on the heat distribution ahead of an evaporation front, and buoyancy determines the motion of the growing bubbles. In microgravity, convection and buoyancy are absent or greatly reduced and the dynamics of the growing vapor bubbles can change in a fundamental way. In particular, the lack of redistribution of heat can lead to a large superheat and explosive growth of bubbles once they form. While considerable efforts have been devoted to examining boiling experimentally, including the effect of microgravity, theoretical and computational work is limited to very simple models. In this project, the growth of boiling bubbles is studied by direct numerical simulations where the flow field is fully resolved and the effects of inertia, viscosity, surface deformation, heat conduction and convection, as well as the phase change, are fully accounted for. The proposed work is based on previously funded NASA work that allowed us to develop a two-dimensional numerical method for boiling flows and to demonstrate the ability of the method to simulate film boiling. While numerical simulations of multi-fluid flows have been advanced in a major way during the last five years, or so, similar capability for flows with phase change are still in their infancy. Although the feasibility of the proposed approach has been demonstrated, it has yet to be extended and applied to fully three-dimensional simulations. Here, a fully three-dimensional, parallel, grid adaptive code will be developed. The numerical method will be used to study nucleate boiling in microgravity, with particular emphasis on two aspects of the problem: 1) Examination of the growth of bubbles at a wall nucleation site and the instabilities of rapidly growing bubbles. Particular emphasis will be put on accurately capturing the thin wall layer left behind as a bubble expands along a wall, on computing instabilities on bubble surfaces as bubbles grow, and on quantifying the effects of both these phenomena on heat transfer; and 2) Examination of the effect of shear flow on bubble growth and heat transfer.

Spacecraft solar dynamic power systems typically use high-temperature phase-change materials to efficiently store thermal energy for heat engine operation in orbital eclipse periods. Lithium fluoride salts are particularly well suited for this application because of their high heat of fusion, long-term stability, and appropriate melting point. Considerable attention has been focused on the development of thermal energy storage (TES) canisters that employ either pure lithium fluoride (LiF), with a melting point of 1121 K, or eutectic composition lithium-fluoride/calcium-difluoride (LiF-20CaF2), with a 1040 K melting point, as the phase-change material. Primary goals of TES canister development include maximizing the phase-change material melt fraction, minimizing the canister mass per unit of energy storage, and maximizing the phase-change material thermal charge/discharge rates within the limits posed by the container structure.

The Thermal Energy Storage-1 (TES-1) is a flight experiment that flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-62), in March 1994, as part of the OAST-2 mission. TES-1 is the first experiment in a four experiment suite designed to provide data for understanding the long duration microgravity behavior of thermal energy storage fluoride salts that undergo repeated melting and freezing. Such data have never been obtained before and have direct application for the development of space-based solar dynamic (SD) power systems. These power systems will store solar energy in a thermal energy salt such as lithium fluoride or calcium fluoride. The stored energy is extracted during the shade portion of the orbit. This enables the solar dynamic power system to provide constant electrical power over the entire orbit. Analytical computer codes have been developed for predicting performance of a spaced-based solar dynamic power system. Experimental verification of the analytical predictions is needed prior to using the analytical results for future space power design applications. The four TES flight experiments will be used to obtain the needed experimental data. This paper will focus on the flight results from the first experiment, TES-1, in comparison to the predicted results from the Thermal Energy Storage Simulation (TESSIM) analytical computer code. The TES-1 conceptual development, hardware design, final development, and system verification testing were accomplished at the NASA lewis Research Center (LeRC). TES-1 was developed under the In-Space Technology Experiment Program (IN-STEP), which sponsors NASA, industry, and university flight experiments designed to enable and enhance space flight technology. The IN-STEP Program is sponsored by the Office of Space Access and Technology (OSAT).

This experiment is the first to melt and freeze a high temperature thermal energy storage (TES) material under an extended duration of microgravity. It is one of a series to validate an analytical computer program that predicts void behavior of substances undergoing phase change under microgravity. Two flight experiments were launched in STS-62. The first, TES-1, containing lithium fluoride in an annular volume, performed flawlessly in the 22 hours of its operation. Results are reported in this paper. A software failure in TES-2 caused its shutdown after 4 seconds. A computer program, TESSIM, for thermal energy storage simulation is being developed to analyze the phenomena occurring within the TES containment vessel. The first order effects, particularly the surface tension forces, have been incorporated into TESSIM. TESSIM validation is based on two types of results. First is the temperature history of various points of the containment structure, and second, upon return from flight, the distribution of the TES material within the containment vessel following the last freeze cycle. The temperature data over the four cycles showed a repetition of results over the third and fourth cycles. This result is a confirmation that any initial conditions prior to the first cycle had been damped out by the third cycle. The TESSIM simulation showed a close comparison with the flight data. The solidified TES material distribution within the containment vessel was obtained by a tomography imaging process. The frozen material was concentrated toward the colder end of the annular volume. The TESSIM prediction showed the same pattern. With the general agreement of TESSIM and the data, a computerized visual representation can be shown which accurately shows the movement and behavior of the void during the entire freezing and melting cycles.

Asymptotic results obtained by Foster and Smith (1989) for inviscid instability modes of the Type-II Long's vortex is extended to account for the effects of finite Reynolds number. It is shown that the nonparallelism of the flow is more important than the viscous terms in determining the finite-Re behavior due to the radial velocity scales with Re exp -1 M. A critical layer of the three-layer structrue of the parallel-flow instability modes is considerably modified by radial velocity. It is found that for azimuthal wavenumber n greater than 1, the nonparallelism stabilizes the unstable inertial modes, leading to determination of neutral curves. For n less than -1, the nonparallel effects always destabilize the vortex to these helical modes.

Attention is given to the quadratic density distribution in a channel, which has been established by Simpson and Linden to be the simplest case of the horizontally nonlinear distribution of fluid density required for the production of frontogenesis. The porous-media and Boussinesq flow models are examined, and their evolution equations are reduced to one-dimensional systems. While both the porous-media and the inviscid/nondiffusive Boussinesq systems exhibit classic frontogenesis behavior, the viscous Boussinesq system exhibits a more complex behavior: boundary-layer effects force frontogenesis away from the lower boundary, and at late times the steepest density gradients are close to mid-channel.

The evolution of two miscible liquids meeting at an initially sharp interface inside a cavity under microgravity g-jitter conditions is studied numerically. The response of the interface and kinematics of the flowfield to various g-jitter accelerations and aspect ratio variations is shown. The interface region acts like a vortex source sheet, and it can be unstable to Kelvin-Helmholtz and Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities. The vortices produced along the interface can serve as a stirring mechanism to promote local mixing. Below the critical Stokes-Reynolds number, the destabilization of the interface results in deformation into wavy structures. In some parameter regions, these structures oscillate in time; in others, they are quasi-steady. Above the critical Stokes-Reynolds number, 'chaotic' instability results, and the interface breaks into concentration pockets. The morphology of the initial breakup is similar to observed Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Subsequent mixing of the two fluids after the breakup of the interface is then very rapid.

Instabilities in a fluid with a constant density gradient that is subject to arbitrarily oriented oscillatory accelerations are considered. With the Boussinesq approximation and for the case of an unbounded fluid, transformation to Lagrangian coordinates allows the reduction of the problem to an ordinary differential equation for each three-dimensional wavenumber. The problem has three parameters: the nondimensional amplitude R of the base-state oscillation, the nondimensional level of background steady acceleration, which for some cases can be represented in terms of a local (in time) Richardson number Ri, and the Prandtl number Pr. Some general bounds on stability are derived. For Pr = 1 closed-form solutions are found for impulse (delta function) accelerations and a general asymptotic solution is constructed for large R and general imposed accelerations. The asymptotic solution takes advantage of the fact that at large R wave growth is concentrated at 'zero points'. These are times when the effective vertical wavenumber passes through zero. Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities are found to dominate at low R, while Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities dominate at high R. At high R, the uniform shear of the Kelvin-Helmholtz case tends to distort and weaken instability waves. With unsteady flows, Ri = 1/4 is no longer an instability limit. Significant instabilities have been found for sinusoidal forcing for Ri up to 0.6.

Henry and Roux (1986, 1987, 1988) have conducted extensive numerical studies on the interaction of Soret separation with convection in cylindrical geometry. Many of their solutions exhibit parallel flow away from end walls. Their parallel flow results can be matched by closed-form solutions. Solutions are nonunique in some parameter regions. Disappearance of one branch of solutions correlates with a sudden transition of Henry and Roux's results from a separated to a well-mixed flow.

It is now known that Batchelor's trailing-line vortex is extremely unstable to small amplitude disturbances for swirl numbers in the neighborhood of 0.83. The results of numerical calculations are presented that show the response of the vortex in this range of swirl numbers to finite amplitude, temporal, helical disturbances. Phenomena observed include: (1) ejection of axial vorticity and momentum from the core resulting in the creation of secondary, separate vortices; (2) a great intensification of core axial vorticity and a weakening of core momentum; and (3) the production of azimuthal vorticity in the form of a tightly wrapped spiral wave. The second phenomenon eventually stablizes the vortex, which then smooths and gradually returns to an axisymmetric state. The calculations are mixed spectral-finite-difference, fourth-order accurate, and have been carried out at Reynolds numbers of 1000 to 2000. Some linearized results are also discussed in an attempt to explain the process of vortex intensification.

The case of two incompressible viscous fluids (with different densities) which meet at a planar interface and are subject to an externally imposed oscillating acceleration directed normal to the interface is studied. The linear evolution of perturbations to the basic-state flow is investigated. It is found that the critical Stokes-Reynolds number and the most unstable perturbation wavelengths are insensitive to the degree of density and viscosity differences between the two fluids.

The evolution of the interface between two fluids confined in a rectangular cavity is investigated numerically to predict its transient behavior. These computations address mixing characteristics of fluids under microgravity conditions, particularly g-jitter conditions resulting from aircraft vibration or crew motion, and have applications in solution crystal growth. The two-dimensional formulation employs the Boussinesq approximation and treats the mixing of two fluids as an initial value problem with a prescribed concentration field. For fluid mixing of practical applications inside a cavity, it is shown that nonlinear convective transport can dominate over both viscous and molecular diffusion. However, viscous diffusion can become important for low Reynolds number or certain cavity sizes. A stacking phenomenon is shown to occur for aspect ratios (Ar) approximately between 5 to 10. For aspect ratios in the neighborhood of 0.1 to 0.2, inner cells evolve at the interface with increasing time. For a square cavity of Ar = 1, chaotic mixing of the fluid appears to occur for a Stokes-Reynolds number greater than about 5.
