Device-induced thrombosis remains a major complication of extracorporeal life support (ECLS). To more thoroughly understand how blood components interact with the artificial surfaces of ECLS circuit components, assessment of clot deposition on these surfaces following clinical use is urgently needed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which produces high-resolution images at nanoscale level, allows visualization and characterization of thrombotic deposits on ECLS circuitry. However, methodologies to increase the quantifiability of SEM analysis of ECLS circuit components have yet to be applied clinically. To address these issues, we developed a protocol to quantify clot deposition on ECLS membrane oxygenator gas transfer fiber sheets through digital and SEM imaging techniques. In this study, ECLS membrane oxygenator fiber sheets were obtained, fixed, and imaged after use. Following a standardized process, the percentage of clot deposition on both digital images and SEM images was quantified using ImageJ through blind reviews. The interrater reliability of quantitative analysis among reviewers was evaluated. Parents' beliefs about the nature of ability are communicated to their children through parent-child interactions. Parental mindsets are one of the parental beliefs that have received increasing attention over recent years. However, their role in children's motivation and achievement outcomes remains relatively underexplored. Moreover, most existing studies have measured parental mindsets as either reported by parents themselves or perceived by children only, making it difficult to develop a comprehensive understanding of their role. Yet, parents' mindsets and children's perceptions of their parents' mindsets may not be identical, and one may be more important than the other in shaping children's motivation and achievement. Using the data from 507 third- and fourth-graders and their parents in Korea, we examined how parents' growth and fixed mindsets, both self-reported and child-perceived, predicted children's achievement goals, persistence, and achievement in mathematics. Whereas the growth and fixed mindsets of parents correlated negatively with each other, there was no significant relationship between self-reported and child-perceived parental mindsets. Parents' growth mindset positively predicted children's mastery goals. In contrast, parents' fixed mindset negatively predicted children's mastery goals and positively predicted children's ability-focused and normative performance goals. Children's mastery goals in turn positively predicted their persistence and achievement. The indirect paths from parental mindsets to children's persistence and achievement through children's mastery goals were also significant. In general, the child-perceived mindsets of parents demonstrated a stronger predictive power than the self-reported mindsets of parents. The underexplored role of parental mindsets is discussed concerning children's achievement goal adoption and learning.

We examined relations of U.S. teachers' perceptions of mastery and performance goal structures to violence perpetrated against them before and during COVID-19. We hypothesized that perceptions of an instructional emphasis on mastery (i.e. mastery goal structure) would be related to lower levels of victimization, whereas perceptions of an emphasis on performance (i.e. performance goal structure) would be related to greater victimization. Using a sample of 9,363 teachers, we conducted negative binomial regression analyses, controlling for teacher and school characteristics. Perceptions of a performance goal structure were related to higher levels of teacher-directed violence, whereas perceptions of a mastery goal structure were related to lower levels of violence. Results underscore the benefits of school mastery versus performance goal structures for bolstering student motivation and teacher safety.

This study investigated the effects of concept-oriented faded in worked-out examples (WOE) and metacognitive scaffolding on learners' transfer performance and motivation in programming education. Two types of faded in WOE and metacognitive scaffolding were provided. A total of 140 participants were randomly assigned into one of four groups, with 35 in each group: concept-oriented faded WOE for the COF group; position-oriented faded WOE for the POF group; concept-oriented faded WOE with metacognitive scaffolding for the COFM group; and position-oriented faded WOE with metacognitive scaffolding for the POFM group. The experiment was conducted over the course of 10 weeks. After the completion of all learning processes, the participants' knowledge transfer and motivation were measured. The findings revealed that providing concept-oriented faded WOE led to a significantly better performance than did providing position-oriented faded WOE, both in near-transfer and far-transfer results. In addition, the results revealed that providing concept-oriented faded WOE with metacognitive scaffolding (COFM) was the most effective in promoting motivation. The findings further provided empirical evidence that using concept-oriented faded WOE, along with metacognitive scaffolding, is better than using only concept-oriented faded WOE.

miRNAs (microRNAs) are a class of endogenous small RNAs that are thought to negatively regulate protein production. Aberrant expression of many miRNAs is linked to cancer and other diseases. Little is known about the factors that regulate the expression of miRNAs. We have identified numerous regulatory elements upstream of miRNA genes that are likely to be essential to the transcriptional and posttranscriptional regulation of miRNAs. Newly identified regulatory motifs occur frequently and in multiple copies upstream of miRNAs. The motifs are highly enriched in G and C nucleotides, in comparison with the nucleotide composition of miRNA upstream sequences. Although the motifs were predicted using sequences that are upstream of miRNAs, we find that 99% of the top-predicted motifs preferentially occur within the first 500 nucleotides upstream of the transcription start sites of protein-coding genes; the observed preference in location underscores the validity and importance of the motifs identified in this study. Our study also raises the possibility that a considerable number of well-characterized, disease-associated transcription factors (TFs) of protein-coding genes contribute to the abnormal miRNA expression in diseases such as cancer. Further analysis of predicted miRNA-protein interactions lead us to hypothesize that TFs that include c-Myb, NF-Y, Sp-1, MTF-1, and AP-2alpha are master-regulators of miRNA expression. Our predictions are a solid starting point for the systematic elucidation of the causative basis for aberrant expression patterns of disease-related (e.g., cancer) miRNAs. Thus, we point out that focused studies of the TFs that regulate miRNAs will be paramount in developing cures for miRNA-related diseases. The identification of the miRNA regulatory motifs was facilitated by a new computational method, K-Factor. K-Factor predicts regulatory motifs in a set of functionally related sequences, without relying on evolutionary conservation.

Background: Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) including embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) offer the immense therapeutic potential in stem cell-based therapy of degenerative disorders. However, clinical trials of human ESCs cause heavy ethical concerns. With the derivation of iPSCs established by reprogramming from adult somatic cells through the transgenic expression of transcription factors, this problems would be able to overcome. In the present study, we tried to differentiate porcine iPSCs (piPSCs) into endothelial cells (ECs) for stem cell-based therapy of vascular diseases. Methods: piPSCs (OSKMNL) were induced to differentiation into ECs in four differentiation media (APEL-2, APEL-2 + 50 ng/mL of VEGF, EBM-2, EBM-2 + 50 ng/ mL of VEGF) on cultured plates coated with matrigel® (1:40 dilution with DMEM/F-12 medium) for 8 days. Differentiation efficiency of these cells were exanimated using qRT-PCR, Immunocytochemistry, Western blotting and FACS. Results: As results, expressions of pluripotency-associated markers (OCT-3/4, SOX2 and NANOG) were higher observed in all porcine differentiated cells derived from piPSCs (OSKMNL) cultured in four differentiation media than piPSCs as the control, whereas endothelial-associated marker (CD-31) in the differentiated cells was not expressed. Conclusions: It can be seen that piPSCs (OSKMNL) were not suitable to differentiate into ECs in the four differentiation media unlike porcine epiblast stem cells (pEpiSCs). Therefore, it would be required to establish a suitable PSCs for differentiating into ECs for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics and surgical outcomes of patients with external auditory canal (EAC) and temporal bone (TB) malignancy with dura invasion. Methods The medical records of patients with EAC and TB malignancy with dura invasion were retrospectively reviewed. Survival outcomes (overall survival [OS], disease‐specific survival [DSS], recurrence‐free survival [RFS], and distant metastasis‐free survival [DMFS]) were analyzed using the Kaplan–Meier method. Results A total of eight patients were included in this study. The median age at diagnosis was 49.5 years (range 12–74 years). The median follow‐up periods were 46.5 months. Histologically, four out of eight patients were diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC; 50%). The 2‐year OS and DSS rates of all patients were 62.5%, and those of EAC SCC patients were 50% and 66.7%, respectively; while the 2‐year RFS and DMFS rates of all patients were 37.5%. There was one local recurrence at the resection site (12.5%), two regional neck nodal recurrences (25%), and two distant metastases (25%). Dura resection and duroplasty areas were not involved in the local recurrence case. Conclusion In EAC and TB cancer with dura invasion, radical surgery with dura resection may show similar survival outcomes to previous studies without recurrence at the dura resection site. Background Fatty liver is associated with increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. We aimed to evaluate whether the severity of hepatic steatosis is associated with incident diabetes. Methods We conducted a longitudinal analysis using data from 1,798 participants who underwent a comprehensive health checkup and abdominal computed tomography (CT). We assessed the association between baseline liver attenuation value on non-contrast CT images and risk of incident diabetes. All the participants were categorized into three groups based on the baseline liver attenuation value on non-contrast CT images: without hepatic steatosis (>57 Hounsfield unit [HU]), mild hepatic steatosis (41–57 HU), and moderate to severe hepatic steatosis (≤40 HU). Results During a median follow-up period of 5 years, 6.0% of the study participants progressed to diabetes. The incidence of diabetes was 17.3% in the moderate to severe hepatic steatosis group, 9.0% in the mild steatosis group, and 2.9% in those without hepatic steatosis. In a multivariate adjustment model, as compared with participants without hepatic steatosis, those with moderate to severe steatosis had a hazard ratio (HR) of 3.24 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.64 to 4.2) for the development of diabetes, and those in the mild steatosis group had a HR of 2.33 (95% CI, 1.42 to 3.80). One standard deviation decrease in mean CT attenuation values of the liver was associated with a 40% increase in the development of diabetes (multivariate adjusted HR, 1.40; 95% CI, 1.2 to 1.63). Conclusion We found a positive association between severity of hepatic steatosis and risk of incident diabetes. Greater severity of steatosis was associated with a higher risk of incident diabetes.

Abstract Background Situation, background, assessment, and recommendation (SBAR) has been extensively used in clinical and nursing education. A structured communication program increases effective communication, positivity, and education satisfaction during inter-professional collaboration among nursing students. This systematic review aimed to identify and synthesize evidence on the effectiveness of SBAR-based simulation training for nursing students. Methods A research protocol was developed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols guidelines. The protocol for this study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021234068). Eight bibliographical databases were searched for studies published between 2001 and 2021, using relevant search terms. Searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for literature in English, and DBpia, Research Information Sharing Service, Korean Studies Information Service System, and Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information for literature in Korean. After screening titles, abstracts, and full-text papers, pertinent data were extracted, and critical appraisals of the retrieved studies were performed. Data were analyzed using the framework approach, and the findings were presented in a narrative summary. The Effective Public Health Practice Project “Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies” was used to assess the quality of the included studies. Results Twelve studies were included: 3 randomized controlled trials and 9 quasi-experimental studies. Two overarching themes were noted, namely communication clarity and critical thinking. The results of six out of 12 studies produced significant results in favor of SBAR-based simulation in terms of communication clarity. Divergent results were obtained regarding communication ability, critical thinking, confidence, learning self-efficacy, and attitude toward patient safety. The results of these studies highlight that communication clarity ultimately leads to positive results in terms of nursing students’ behaviors related to patient safety. Conclusions This review provides a comprehensive update of the literature on the effectiveness of SBAR-based nursing simulation programs for nursing students. These programs were found to have positive learning outcomes because of clear and concise communication. Further studies on the effectiveness of various learning outcomes derived from SBAR-based programs are required.

Abstract Mites of the genus Tyrophagus (Acari: Acaridae) are among the most widely distributed mites. The species in this genus cause damage to stored products and crops, and pose a threat to human health. However, the influence of Tyrophagus spp. in apiculture remains unknown. In 2022, a study focusing on the identification of Tyrophagus species within five apiaries was conducted in Chungcheongnam Province, Republic of Korea. Its specific objective was to investigate the presence of Tyrophagus mites in response to the reported high mortality of honey bee colonies in this area. Morphological identification and phylogenetic analysis using the mitochondrial gene cytochrome-c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) confirmed for the first time the presence of the mite species Tyrophagus curvipenis in a honey bee colony in the Republic of Korea. Two honey bee pathogens were detected in the mite, a viral pathogen (deformed wing virus, DWV) and a protozoal pathogen (Trypanosoma spp.). The presence of the two honey bee pathogens in the mite suggests that this mite could contribute to the spread of related honey bee diseases. However, the direct influence of the mite T. curvipenis on honey bee health remains unknown and should be further investigated.

Background: This study evaluated occupational exposure levels of doxorubicin in healthcare workers performing rotational intraperitoneal pressurized aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) procedures. Methods: All samples were collected during PIPAC procedures applying doxorubicin to an experimental animal model (pigs). All procedures were applied to seven pigs, each for approximately 44 min. Surface samples (n = 51) were obtained from substances contaminating the PIPAC devices, surrounding objects, and protective equipment. Airborne samples were also collected around the operating table (n = 39). All samples were analyzed using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results: Among the surface samples, doxorubicin was detected in only five samples (9.8%) that were directly exposed to antineoplastic drug aerosols in the abdominal cavity originating from PIPAC devices. The telescopes showed concentrations of 0.48–5.44 ng/cm2 and the trocar showed 0.98 ng/cm2 in the region where the spraying nozzles were inserted. The syringe line connector showed a maximum concentration of 181.07 ng/cm2, following a leakage. Contamination was not detected on the surgeons' gloves or shoes. Objects surrounding the operating table, including tables, operating lights, entrance doors, and trocar holders, were found to be uncontaminated. All air samples collected at locations where healthcare workers performed procedures were found to be uncontaminated. Conclusions: Most air and surface samples were uncontaminated or showed very low doxorubicin concentrations during PIPAC procedures. However, there remains a potential for leakage, in which case dermal exposure may occur. Safety protocols related to leakage accidents, selection of appropriate protective equipment, and the use of disposable devices are necessary to prevent occupational exposure.

Background: Ginseng has been used as a traditional medicine for treatment of many diseases and for general health maintenance. Previously, we showed that ginseng did not demonstrate estrogenic property in ovariectomized mouse model. However, it is still possible that disruption of steroidogenesis leading to indirect hormonal activity. Methods: The hormonal activities were examined in compliance with OECD guidelines for detecting endocrine disrupting chemicals: test guideline (TG) No. 456 (an in vitro assay method for detecting steroidogenesis property) and TG No. 440 (an in vivo short-term screening method for chemicals with uterotrophic property). Results: Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) and ginsenosides Rb1, Rg1, and Rg3 did not interfere with estrogen and testosterone hormone synthesis as examined in H295 cells according to TG 456. KRG treatment to ovariectomized mice did not show a significant change in uterine weight. In addition, serum estrogen and testosterone levels were not change by KRG intake. Conclusion: These results clearly demonstrate that there is no steroidogenic activity associated with KRG and no disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis by KRG. Additional tests will be performed in pursuit of cellular molecular targets of ginseng to manifest mode of action.

Abstract Myopia is one of the risk factors for glaucoma, making accurate diagnosis of glaucoma in myopic eyes particularly important. However, diagnosis of glaucoma in myopic eyes is challenging due to the frequent associations of distorted optic disc and distorted parapapillary and macular structures. Macular vertical scan has been suggested as a useful tool to detect glaucomatous retinal nerve fiber layer loss even in highly myopic eyes. The present study was performed to develop and validate a deep learning (DL) system to detect glaucoma in myopic eyes using macular vertical optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans and compare its diagnostic power with that of circumpapillary OCT scans. The study included a training set of 1416 eyes, a validation set of 471 eyes, a test set of 471 eyes, and an external test set of 249 eyes. The ability to diagnose glaucoma in eyes with large myopic parapapillary atrophy was greater with the vertical than the circumpapillary OCT scans, with areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.976 and 0.914, respectively. These findings suggest that DL artificial intelligence based on macular vertical scans may be a promising tool for diagnosis of glaucoma in myopic eyes.

Abstract This observational case series study is conducted to compare the extent of microvasculature impairment in the peripapillary retina and choroid in eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), and to investigate the association of the discrepancy between the microvasculature impairments of each layer with the rate of progressive retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning. A total of 88 POAG eyes with a localized RNFL defect were enrolled, including 67 eyes with and 21 eyes without choroidal microvasculature dropout (CMvD). Circumferential widths of retinal microvascular impairment (RMvI) and CMvD were measured, and eyes were classified based on the relative width of CMvD to RMvI (CMvD/RMvI ratio). The rate of RNFL thinning was determined by linear regression based on ≥ 5 serial OCT examinations. Thinner global RNFL and worse visual field mean deviation at baseline were associated with a larger circumferential width of the RMvI, whereas the presence of cold extremities, lower mean arterial pressure and thinner juxtapapillary choroid were associated with a larger circumferential width of the CMvD. The rate of global RNFL thinning was faster in eyes with larger relative CMvD width than in eyes with equal CMvD and RMvI widths and in eyes without CMvD (P = 0.001). Lower mean arterial pressure (P = 0.041), larger CMvD width (P = 0.046), larger CMvD/RMvI ratio (P = 0.041), and detection of disc hemorrhage during the follow-up (P = 0.013) were significant factors associated with faster global RNFL thinning. Larger CMvD width relative to RMvI width may be indicative of an increased risk of faster RNFL thinning in POAG with localized RNFL defect. Comparing the microvasculature impairment in individual layers may help predict more rapid glaucoma progression.

The goal of the 8th edition of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Obesity is to help primary care physician provide safe, effective care to patients with obesity by offering evidence-based recommendations to improve the quality of treatment. The Committee for Clinical Practice Guidelines comprised individuals with multidisciplinary expertise in obesity management. A steering board of seven experts oversaw the entire project. Recommendations were developed as the answers to key questions formulated in patient/problem, intervention, comparison, outcomes (PICO) format. Guidelines underwent multi-level review and cross-checking and received endorsement from relevant scientific societies. This edition of the guidelines includes criteria for diagnosing obesity, abdominal obesity, and metabolic syndrome; evaluation of obesity and its complications; weight loss goals; and treatment options such as diet, exercise, behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric and metabolic surgery for Korean people with obesity. Compared to the previous edition of the guidelines, the current edition includes five new topics to keep up with the constantly evolving field of obesity: diagnosis of obesity, obesity in women, obesity in patients with mental illness, weight maintenance after weight loss, and the use of information and communication technology-based interventions for obesity treatment. This edition of the guidelines features has improved organization, more clearly linking key questions in PICO format to recommendations and key references. We are confident that these new Clinical Practice Guidelines for Obesity will be a valuable resource for all healthcare professionals as they describe the most current and evidence-based treatment options for obesity in a well-organized format.

In this paper, we propose a wideband balun using integrated passive device (IPD) technology. The proposed circuit is designed to compensate for the magnitude deviations by differentiating the magnitude S-parameter and calculating the lumped component value when the derivative value is zero. For a smaller size, the proposed circuit is implemented using IPD technology, and the fabricated circuit’s size is 2.4 mm × 1.02 mm. The magnitude of the measurement results has 3.5 ± 0.3 dB deviations from 2.8–4.58 GHz, and the phase difference has 180° ± 10° from 2.8–5 GHz at the center frequency of 3.6 GHz. Therefore, the measurement results show that the theory of the proposed circuit is well matched compared with the measurement results for smaller sizes, wideband magnitude, and phase characteristics.

Abstract Contrast sensitivity (CS) is closely associated with vision-related quality of life in glaucoma patients. This cross-sectional study was performed to determine the relationship between CS and visual field (VF) sensitivity (VFS) according to the hemifield location of VF defects in 238 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) who underwent 24-2 standard automated perimetry and CS measurement on the same day. Of the 238 eyes, 83, 58, and 47 eyes had VF defects in the superior, inferior and both hemifields, respectively, and 50 had no VF defects in either hemifield. To protect people and the environment from environmental radiation, the Act on Protective Action Guidelines against Radiation in the Natural Environment was formulated in Korea in 2011. This law regulates matters related to radiation safety that can be encountered in life. In accordance with this law, radiation monitoring equipment is operated at major airports and ports across the country, ensuring radiation monitoring of imported cargo. Currently, six ministries conduct radiation monitoring of imported cargo: the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission; the Korea Customs Service; the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety; the Ministry of Environment; the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; and the Korea Forest Service. Each ministry designates the relevant cargo items for radiation monitoring. The objective of this study was to comprehensively review the Korean radiation monitoring system for imported cargo and identify the areas and scopes of improvement. This paper also proposes a new law and an integrated supervision plan, which involves establishing a dedicated department to enhance the efficiency and professionalism of the national radiation monitoring system for imported cargo. The review will contribute to the development of a more sophisticated national radiation monitoring system for imported cargo.

Abstract Glaucoma is a multifactorial disease where various systemic features are involved in the progression of the disease. Based on initial systemic profiles in electronic medical records, this study aimed to develop a model predicting factors of long-term rapid retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning over 5 years in 505 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. Eyes with faster or slower RNFL thinning were stratified using a decision tree model, and systemic and ophthalmic data were incorporated into the models based on random forest and permutation methods, with the models interpreted by Shapley additive explanation plots (SHAP). According to the decision tree, a higher lymphocyte ratio (> 34.65%) was the most important systemic variable discriminating faster or slower RNFL thinning. Higher mean corpuscular hemoglobin (> 32.05 pg) and alkaline phosphatase (> 88.0 IU/L) concentrations were distinguishing factors in the eyes with lymphocyte ratios > 34.65% and

Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second-most common neurodegenerative disease worldwide. Several studies have investigated PD for decades; however, the exact mechanism of disease development remains unknown. To study PD, SH-SY5Y cells are often treated with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) or 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+) to induce PD. To understand the mechanism of PD pathogenesis, we confirmed protein changes between 6-OHDA- and MPP+-treated SH-SY5Y cells via proteomics analysis using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. 6-OHDA-treated SH-SY5Y cells showed increased expression of electron transporter-related proteins compared to that in the control group, along with decreased expression in MPP+-treated SH-SY5Y cells. However, both down- and upregulation of electron transporter-related proteins increased mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis. These proteins were confirmed via protein–protein interaction network analysis using IPA and STRING to induce mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis. Cell-based experiments using flow cytometry verified that apoptosis and mitochondrial membrane potential were increased in both 6-OHDA- and MPP+-treated SH-SY5Y cells. Our results provide new insights into PD pathogenesis, thereby contributing to the understanding of the mechanisms of PD development.

It is important to distinguish uterine lesions from other lesions occurring in the pelvic cavity for the proper management. The primary radiological evaluation of uterine lesions is performed using transvaginal ultrasonography, and if the lesion is too large or shows atypical benign imaging findings, magnetic resonance imaging should be performed. Analyzing radiological findings of uterine lesions through a pattern recognition approach can help establish the accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. In this pictorial assay, we describe imaging characteristics of various lesions arising from the uterus and evaluate them based on the pattern recognition approach.

Abstract Background Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus classified in Flaviviridae family such as dengue (DENV), yellow fever, and West Nile virus. An outbreak of ZIKV infection can pose a major public health risk because the contagion is unpredictable and induces severe pathology such as Guillan-Barre syndrome and neonatal microcephaly. However, an authorized ZIKV vaccine is not yet available, while several vaccine candidates are under development. Methods In this study, we constructed a recombinant ZIKV vaccine (Z_EDIII) that includes ZIKV envelope protein domain III using E. coli expression system. Then both humoral and cellular immunity were examined in C57BL/6 (female, 8-weeks-old) mice via Indirect ELISA assay, PRNT, ELISpot and cytokine detection for IFN-γ, TNF-α, and IL-12. In addition, the cross protection against DENV was evaluated in pups from Z_EDIII vaccinated and infected dam. Results Mice immunized by Z_EDIII produced a significant amount of ZIKV EDIII-specific and neutralizing antibodies. Together with antibodies, effector cytokines, such as IFN-γ, TNF-α, and IL-12 were induced. Moreover, vaccinated females delivered the adaptive immunity to neonates who are protective against ZIKV and DENV challenge. Conclusions This study observed Z-EDIII-induced humoral and cellular immunity that protected hosts from both ZIKV and DENV challenges. The result suggests that our ZIKV EDIII recombinant vaccine has potential to provide a new preventive strategy against ZIKV infection.

Abstract Kori 1, the first commercial reactor in Korea, was permanently shut down in 2017 and is preparing for decommissioning in the mid‐2020s. Although Kori 1 is shut down, some radiation sources remain in the system; as such, the dismantling workers are exposed to radiation until decommissioning is completed. Unexpected radiation events have been reported in some decommissioning nuclear power plants (NPPs), which resulted in additional radiation exposure to workers and significant financial losses due to delays in the decommissioning schedule. Hence, an appropriate radiation protection program must be established to minimize radiation exposure as well as the economic burden. In this study, radiation doses from precedent decommissioning NPPs worldwide are compared with those estimated from Kori 1 to determine dose reduction measures that can achieve radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable to decommissioning workers.

BackgroundIntimate partner violence (IPV) is an underreported public health crisis primarily affecting women associated with severe health conditions and can lead to a high rate of homicide. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, more women with IPV experiences visited online health communities (OHCs) to seek help because of anonymity. However, little is known regarding whether their help requests were answered and whether the information provided was delivered in an appropriate manner. To understand the help-seeking information sought and given in OHCs, extraction of postings and linguistic features could be helpful to develop automated models to improve future help-seeking experiences. ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to examine the types and patterns (ie, communication styles) of the advice offered by OHC members and whether the information received from women matched their expressed needs in their initial postings. MethodsWe examined data from Reddit using data from subreddit community r/domesticviolence posts from November 14, 2020, through November 14, 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is a crucial enzyme involved in energy metabolism and present in various cells throughout the body. Its diverse physiological functions encompass glycolysis, and its abnormal activity is associated with numerous diseases. Targeting LDH has emerged as a vital approach in drug discovery, leading to the identification of LDH inhibitors among natural compounds, such as polyphenols, alkaloids, and terpenoids. These compounds demonstrate therapeutic potential against LDH-related diseases, including anti-cancer effects. However, challenges concerning limited bioavailability, poor solubility, and potential toxicity must be addressed. Combining natural compounds with LDH inhibitors has led to promising outcomes in preclinical studies. This review highlights the promise of natural compounds as LDH inhibitors for treating cancer, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract Background Probiotics have been reported to exhibit positive effects on host health, including improved intestinal barrier function, preventing pathogenic infection, and promoting nutrient digestion efficiency. These internal changes are reflected to the fecal microbiota composition and, bacterial metabolites production. In accordance, the application of probiotics has been broadened to industrial animals, including swine, which makes people to pursue better knowledge of the correlation between changes in the fecal microbiota and metabolites. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of multi-strain probiotics (MSP) supplementation to piglets utilizing multiomics analytical approaches including metagenomics, culturomics, and metabolomics. Results Six-week-old piglets were supplemented with MSP composed of Lactobacillus isolated from the feces of healthy piglets. To examine the effect of MSP supplement, piglets of the same age were selected and divided into two groups; one with MSP supplement (MSP group) and the other one without MSP supplement (Control group). MSP feeding altered the composition of the fecal microbiota, as demonstrated by metagenomics analysis. The abundance of commensal Lactobacillus was increased by 2.39%, while Clostridium was decreased, which revealed the similar pattern to the culturomic approach. Next, we investigated the microbial metabolite profiles, specifically SCFAs using HPLC–MS/MS and others using GC–MS, respectively. MSP supplement elevated the abundance of amino acids, including valine, isoleucine and proline as well as the concentration of acetic acid. According to the correlation analyses, these alterations were found out to be crucial in energy synthesizing metabolism, such as branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolism and coenzyme A biosynthesis. Furthermore, we isolated commensal Lactobacillus strains enriched by MSP supplement, and analyzed the metabolites and evaluated the functional improvement, related to tight junction from intestinal porcine enterocyte cell line (IPEC-J2). Conclusions In conclusion, MSP administration to piglets altered their fecal microbiota, by enriching commensal Lactobacillus strains. This change contributed amino acid, acetic acid, and BCAA concentrations to be increased, and energy metabolism pathway was also increased at in vivo and in vitro. These changes produced by MSP supplement suggests the correlation between the various physiological energy metabolism functions induced by health-promoting Lactobacillus and the growth performance of piglets.

Endometriosis-related symptoms are believed to be alleviated during pregnancy. However, pregnancy complications, such as pseudoaneurysm of the uterine artery, rupture of ovarian or uterine vessels, and intraabdominal bleeding from decidualized deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) lesion have been rarely reported. Owing to the potential risk of rupture and resultant life-threatening complications, proper diagnosis and close monitoring of decidualized endometriotic lesion are very important despite its low relative risk. Till date, massive vaginal bleeding from decidualized rectovaginal DIE during pregnancy has not been in English literatures. Here, we present the first case of spontaneous massive vaginal bleeding due to decidualized rectovaginal DIE that occurred in the late third trimester of pregnancy.

Abstract To investigate the diagnostic value of combined SWE, SMI, and B-mode US scores for distinguishing between benign and malignant masses. A total of 450 breast masses that underwent US-guided core needle biopsies were prospectively enrolled. The breast masses were assessed based on the BI-RADS and quantitative SWE and SMI parameters. The SWEmax, SWEratio, and SMIVI cutoff value were determined using Youden’s index by comparison to the pathological results. The BI-RADS categories were scored on a scale from 1 to 5, and SWEmax, SWEratio, and SMIVI were dichotomized based on each cutoff values (0 or 1). The combined scores (1 to 8) were calculated as the sum of the BI-RADS score and the quantitative scores and compared to the pathologic results using AUROC analysis. Objective Putaminal iron deposition is an important feature that helps differentiate multiple system atrophy with predominant parkinsonism (MSA-p) from Parkinson’s disease (PD). Most previous studies used visual inspection or quantitative methods with manual manipulation to perform this differentiation. We investigated the value of a new semiautomated diagnostic algorithm using 3T-MR susceptibility-weighted imaging for MSA-p. Methods This study included 26 MSA-p, 68 PD, and 41 normal control (NC) subjects. The algorithm was developed in 2 steps: 1) determine the image containing the remarkable putaminal margin and 2) calculate the phase-shift values, which reflect the iron concentration. The next step was to identify the best differentiating conditions among several combinations. The highest phase-shift value of each subject was used to assess the most effective diagnostic set. Results The raw phase-shift values were present along the lateral margin of the putamen in each group. It demonstrates an anterior-to-posterior gradient that was identified most frequently in MSA-p. The average of anterior 5 phase shift values were used for normalization. The highest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (0.874, 80.8% sensitivity, and 86.7% specificity) of MSA-p versus PD was obtained under the combination of 3 or 4 vertical pixels and one dominant side when the normalization methods were applied. In the subanalysis for the MSA-p patients with a longer disease duration, the performance of the algorithm improved. Conclusion This algorithm detected the putaminal lateral margin well, provided insight into the iron distribution of the putaminal rim of MSA-p, and demonstrated good performance in differentiating MSA-p from PD.
