Nitrogen oxides (NOx≡ NO + NO2) are of central importance for air quality, climate forcing, and nitrogen deposition to ecosystems. The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is now providing hourly NO2 satellite observations over East Asia, offering the first direct measurements of NO2 diurnal variation from space to guide understanding of NOx emissions and chemistry. The NO2 retrieval requires independent vertical profile information from a chemical transport model (CTM) to compute the air mass factor (AMF) that relates the NO2 column measured along the line of sight to the NO2 vertical column. Here, we use aircraft observations from the Korea-United States Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) campaign over the Seoul metropolitan area (SMA) and around the Korean Peninsula in May–June 2016 to better understand the factors controlling the NO2 vertical profile, its diurnal variation, the implications for the AMFs, and the ability of the GEOS-Chem CTM to compute the NO2 vertical profiles used for AMFs. Proper representation of oxidant chemistry is critical for the CTM simulation of NO2 vertical profiles and is achieved in GEOS-Chem through new model developments, including aerosol nitrate photolysis, reduced uptake of hydroperoxy (HO2) radicals by aerosols, and accounting for atmospheric oxidation of volatile chemical products (VCPs). We find that the tropospheric NO2 columns measured from space in the SMA are mainly contributed by the planetary boundary layer (PBL) below 2 km altitude, reflecting the highly polluted conditions. Repeated measurements of NO2 vertical profiles over the SMA at different times of day show that diurnal change in mixing depth affecting the NO2 vertical profile induces a diurnal variation in AMFs of comparable magnitude to the diurnal variation in the NO2 column. GEOS-Chem captures this diurnal variation in AMFs and more generally the variability in the AMFs for the KORUS-AQ NO2 vertical profiles (2.7 % mean bias, 7.6 % precision), with some outliers in the morning due to errors in the timing of mixed-layer growth.

We investigate the temporal variations of ground-level ozone and balloon-based ozone profiles at Pohang (36.02∘ N, 129.23∘ E) in the Korean Peninsula. Satellite measurements and chemical reanalysis products are also intercompared to address their capability of providing consistent information on the temporal and vertical variability of atmospheric ozone. Sub-seasonal variations of the summertime lower-tropospheric ozone exhibit a bimodal pattern related to atmospheric weather patterns modulated by the East Asian monsoon circulation. The peak ozone abundances occur during the pre-summer monsoon with enhanced ozone formation due to favorable meteorological conditions (dry and sunny). Ozone concentrations reach their minimum during the summer monsoon and then re-emerge in autumn before the winter monsoon arrives. Profile measurements indicate that ground-level ozone is vertically mixed up to 400 hPa in summer, while the impact of the summer monsoon on ozone dilution is found up to 600 hPa. Compared to satellite measurements, reanalysis products largely overestimate ozone abundances in both the troposphere and stratosphere and give inconsistent features of temporal variations. Nadir-viewing measurements from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) slightly underestimate the boundary layer ozone but represent the bimodal peaks of ozone in the lower troposphere and the interannual changes in the lower-tropospheric ozone in August well, with higher ozone concentrations during strong El Niño events and low ozone concentrations during the 2020 La Niña event.

Ozone in the troposphere is an important air pollutant and greenhouse gas, and also acts as a principal oxidant in the lower atmosphere. This ozone is not emitted directly from anthropogenic sources, but formed though the photochemical reaction of nitrogen oxides with hydrocarbons in the presence of heat and sunlight. Ozone and its precursor can be transported across continents and to the oceans. As well, the downward transport from the stratosphere plays an important role in controlling the tropospheric ozone abundance. The spatial distribution and trends of tropospheric ozone should be regularly monitored and described to improve our understanding of the chemical and physical processes controlling tropospheric ozone and hence supplement the emission control suppressing the ozone pollution and climate change. In support of monitoring air quality, climate change, and ozone layer from space, hyperspectral UV measurements have been regularly accumulated from polar orbiting satellites since the late 1990s as well as geostationary service was recently started in 2019, but retrieving ozone profiles are still uncertain, especially over the troposphere. In this study, we present an optimal estimation-based ozone profile algorithm which is matured for processing OMI measurements with the state of art soft calibration. The capability of this research algorithm is also evaluated for retrieving ozone profiles from TROPOMI and GEMS. Each research ozone profile retrieval is inter-compared with the corresponding operational product. As a reference, we use daily ozonesonde soundings launched at Anmyeondo Island in South Korea during August 2022. It is collected as a part of the ACCLIP (Asian Summer Monsoon Chemical & Climate Impact Project) airborne field campaign in July-August, 2022 to investigate the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere composition under the influence of the Asian summer monsoon. In this study, quantitative differences between ozonesonde measurements and satellite data are assessed with the qualitative evaluation of how satellite measurements represent the ozone variability influenced by the atmospheric circulation.

Objective: Neurogenic pulmonary edema (NPE) combined with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is a unique condition associated with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Although several mechanisms have been proposed, the pathophysiology and management strategies are not yet fully established. We aimed to determine the radiological and clinical outcome of patients with NPE with TCM after aSAH and to propose management strategies. Methods: We analyzed the data of 573 patients with aSAH recorded at a single medical center from February 2015 to July 2022. This study retrospectively investigated the incidence and demographics of SAH combined with both NPE and TCM and the clinical outcomes of the patients. Risk factors of NPE-TCM were also investigated. Results: During the 7 years, 11 (1.9%) of 513 patients had NPE complicated with TCM after aSAH. All 11 patients had poor-grade SAH (Hunt–Hess Grade 3 to 5). Three of 11 patients had posterior circulation in the NPE-TCM group. The most prevalent treatment option was endovascular coil embolization except for one case of clip. Long-term outcomes were favorable in 6 of 11 patients, and there was one case of mortality. Age, troponin I level, and alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient were risk factors of NPE-TCM. Conclusion: NPE combined with TCM is a unique finding in patients with aSAH, and severe clinical conditions may be independent predictors of a fatal outcome. Therefore, understanding the pathophysiology and appropriate management of this condition can improve outcome in patients with aSAH.

We use 2011–2019 aerosol optical depth (AOD) observations from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) instrument over East Asia to infer 24 h daily surface fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations at a continuous 6 × 6 km2 resolution over eastern China, South Korea, and Japan. This is done with a random forest (RF) algorithm applied to the gap-filled GOCI AODs and other data, including information encoded in GOCI AOD retrieval failure and trained with PM2.5 observations from the three national networks. The predicted 24 h GOCI PM2.5 concentrations for sites entirely withheld from training in a 10-fold cross-validation procedure correlate highly with network observations (R2 = 0.89) with a single-value precision of 26 %–32 %, depending on the country. Prediction of the annual mean values has R2 = 0.96 and a single-value precision of 12 %. GOCI PM2.5 is only moderately successful for diagnosing local exceedances of the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) because these exceedances are typically within the single-value precisions of the RF and also because of RF smoothing of extreme PM2.5 concentrations. The area-weighted and population-weighted trends of GOCI PM2.5 concentrations for eastern China, South Korea, and Japan show steady 2015–2019 declines consistent with surface networks, but the surface networks in eastern China and South Korea underestimate population exposure. Further examination of GOCI PM2.5 fields for South Korea identifies hot spots where surface network sites were initially lacking and shows 2015–2019 PM2.5 decreases across the country, except for flat concentrations in the Seoul metropolitan area. Inspection of the monthly PM2.5 time series in Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo shows that the RF algorithm successfully captures observed seasonal variations in PM2.5, even though AOD and PM2.5 often have opposite seasonalities. The application of the RF algorithm to urban pollution episodes in Seoul and Beijing demonstrates high skill in reproducing the observed day-to-day variations in air quality and spatial patterns on the 6 km scale. A comparison to a Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) simulation for the Korean peninsula demonstrates the value of the continuous GOCI PM2.5 fields for testing air quality models, including over North Korea, where they offer a unique resource.

Wildfire activity in Siberia (60E-180E, 55N-80N) has been observed to be more frequent and stronger in recent years. To understand the underlying mechanism of the positive trend in the frequency and strength of wildfire events, especially the role of lightning, we analyzed the relationship among fire ignition, Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE), precipitation, and lightning flash density over Siberia using observations and reanalysis products for the period 2012–2020. A similar analysis was performed on an ultra-high-resolution (25-km) climate model simulation made with Community Earth System Model version 1.2.2 (CESM) under a greenhouse gas-induced warming scenario. In the observations, we found that while the number of lightning flashes is proportional to CAPE and precipitation, the number of fire ignition is only proportional to CAPE. In particular, we identified a threshold of 3.5 mm/day of precipitation, below which fire ignition occurs more frequently. Our analyses reveal that precipitation plays a role in suppressing fire ignition, but dry lightning with high CAPE and low precipitation effectively cause fire ignitions. In the CESM simulation, we found a robust increase in the number of days with high CAPE (> 700 J/kg) and low precipitation (< 3.5 mm/day), which suggests an increase in the frequency of dry lightning events, and therefore more lightning-induced wildfire events in Siberia.

The oxidation of DMS is a key process affecting new particle formation that contributes to the radiative forcing of the Earth. In this study, atmospheric DMS and its major oxidation products (methanesulfonic acid, MSA; non-sea-salt sulfate, nss-SO42-) and particle size distributions were measured at King Sejong station located in the Antarctic Peninsula during the austral spring-summer period in 2018-2020. The observatory was surrounded by open ocean and first-year and multi-year sea ice. Importantly, oceanic emissions and atmospheric oxidation of DMS showed distinct differences depending on source regions. A high mixing ratio of atmospheric DMS was observed when air masses were influenced by the open ocean and first-year sea ice due to the abundance of DMS producers such as pelagic phaeocystis and ice algae. However, the concentrations of MSA and nss-SO42- were distinctively increased for air masses originating from first-year sea ice as compared to those originating from the open ocean and multi-year sea ice, suggesting additional influences from the source regions of atmospheric oxidants. Heterogeneous chemical processes that actively occur over first-year sea ice tend to accelerate the release of bromine monoxide (BrO), which is the most efficient DMS oxidant in Antarctica. Model-estimates for surface BrO confirmed that high BrO mixing ratios were closely associated with first-year sea ice, thus enhancing DMS oxidation. Consequently, the concentration of newly formed particles originated from first-year sea ice, which was a strong source area for both DMS and BrO was greater than from open ocean (high DMS but low BrO). These results indicate that first-year sea ice plays an important yet overlooked role in DMS-induced new particle formation in polar environments, where warming-induced sea ice changes are pronounced., We thank the overwintering staff for assisting us in maintaining the aerosol equipment at the King Sejong station. To compare the efficacies of catheter-directed sclerotherapy (CDS) with 99% ethanol and surgery for ovarian endometrioma and their impact on the ovarian reserve. From January 2011 to June 2019, 71 patients who underwent surgical excision (n = 51) or CDS (n = 20) for symptomatic ovarian endometriomas were reviewed. To analyze the effect on the ovarian reserve, serum anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) levels were compared before and after the procedure. Symptoms, serum cancer antigen 125 (CA-125), lesion size, recurrence, hospitalization, and complications were reviewed retrospectively. During a mean follow-up of 22.3 months (range, 6 to 94 months), no significant difference in symptom relief was found between CDS and surgery (95.0% [19/20] and 92.2% [47/51], respectively, p > 0.999). The hospital stay was shorter with CDS than with surgery (2.6 ± 0.6 days and 4.1 ± 0.5 days, respectively, p 0.999). • No significant difference in serum AMH levels was seen before and after CDS (2.3 (1.1, 5.3)* ng/mL, 2.6 (0.9, 4.9)* ng/mL, respectively, p = 0.243), whereas serum AMH levels significantly decreased after surgical resection (3.0 (1.3, 5.5)* ng/mL, 1.6 (0.7, 3.2)* ng/mL, respectively, p

We estimated the Korea Shortwave Radiation Budget (KSRB) providing new insights into the Korea climate system. Monthly averaged clear-sky, overcast-sky, and all-sky flux measurements with cloud amounts from 2000 to 2015 were used to assess the impacts of cloud on the KSRB. A deterministic model for shortwave radiation transfer was utilized with climatological data to compute the monthly mean of KSRB at the surface, in the atmosphere and at the top-of-atmosphere (TOA). For 10 Korean stations ranging from 33.5°N to 37.7°N, the daily mean of incoming solar flux at TOA is 345.2 Wm−2. 45.5% of that is transmitted to the surface, 25.0% is absorbed in the atmosphere and 29.5% is reflected directly back to space by the cloud, atmosphere and ground surface under all-sky conditions. Under clear- and overcast-sky conditions, 63.2% and 24.9% are transmitted to the surface, 17.8% and 37.1% are absorbed in the atmosphere, whereas 19.0% and 38.0% are reflected to space, respectively, showing a remarkably invariant value with respect to locations. Clouds in all- (or overcast-) sky atmosphere diminish surface solar irradiances (SSI) from 218.1 Wm−2 to 156.9 Wm−2 (or 85.8 Wm−2) and enhance atmospheric absorptions (AA) from 61.5 Wm−2 to 86.3 Wm−2 (or 128.2 Wm−2). Clouds also enhance the reflected irradiances (RI) at the TOA from 65.6 Wm−2 to 102.0 Wm−2 (or 131.2 Wm−2) for all- (or overcast-) skies. As a result, the all- (or overcast-) sky shortwave (SW) cloud forcing (CF) is −61.2 Wm−2 (or −132.3 Wm−2) at the surface, AA is 24.8 Wm−2 (or 66.7 Wm−2) in the atmosphere and RI is 36.4 Wm−2 (or 65.6 Wm−2) at the TOA, respectively. Consequently, it is found that the values for SW-CF at the surface is 1.7 times and 2.0 times greater than that at the TOA in the KSRB under all- and overcast-sky conditions, respectively. We have also compared the KSRB with the global shortwave radiation budget (GSRB) and discussed on the shortwave radiation budget.

The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is scheduled for launch in February 2020 to monitor air quality (AQ) at an unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution from a geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) for the first time. With the development of UV–visible spectrometers at sub-nm spectral resolution and sophisticated retrieval algorithms, estimates of the column amounts of atmospheric pollutants (O3, NO2, SO2, HCHO, CHOCHO, and aerosols) can be obtained. To date, all the UV–visible satellite missions monitoring air quality have been in low Earth orbit (LEO), allowing one to two observations per day. With UV–visible instruments on GEO platforms, the diurnal variations of these pollutants can now be determined. Details of the GEMS mission are presented, including instrumentation, scientific algorithms, predicted performance, and applications for air quality forecasts through data assimilation. GEMS will be on board the Geostationary Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite 2 (GEO-KOMPSAT-2) satellite series, which also hosts the Advanced Meteorological Imager (AMI) and Geostationary Ocean Color Imager 2 (GOCI-2). These three instruments will provide synergistic science products to better understand air quality, meteorology, the long-range transport of air pollutants, emission source distributions, and chemical processes. Faster sampling rates at higher spatial resolution will increase the probability of finding cloud-free pixels, leading to more observations of aerosols and trace gases than is possible from LEO. GEMS will be joined by NASA’s Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) and ESA’s Sentinel-4 to form a GEO AQ satellite constellation in early 2020s, coordinated by the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS).

Based on multiple linear regression (MLR) models, we estimated the PM2.5 at Seoul using a number of aerosol optical depth (AOD) values obtained from ground-based and satellite remote sensing observations. To construct the MLR model, we consider various parameters related to the ambient meteorology and air quality. In general, all AOD values resulted in the high quality of PM2.5 estimation through the MLR method: mostly correlation coefficients &gt, ~0.8. Among various polar-orbit satellite AODs, AOD values from the MODIS measurement contribute to better PM2.5 estimation. We also found that the quality of estimated PM2.5 shows some seasonal variation, the estimated PM2.5 values consistently have the highest correlation with in situ PM2.5 in autumn, but are not well established in winter, probably due to the difficulty of AOD retrieval in the winter condition. MLR modeling using spectral AOD values from the ground-based measurements revealed that the accuracy of PM2.5 estimation does not depend on the selected wavelength. Although all AOD values used in this study resulted in a reasonable accuracy range of PM2.5 estimation, our analyses of the difference in estimated PM2.5 reveal the importance of utilizing the proper AOD for the best quality of PM2.5 estimation.

The ozone concentration in the atmosphere has been recovering with the reduction in atmospheric ozone-depleting substances (ODS). However, ODS remain in the atmosphere for long periods, slowing recovery. Furthermore, greenhouse gas-induced climate change complicates ozone recovery. East Asia is a significant contributor to global climate change due to the increase in industrialization and the presence of complex climate conditions. We investigated ozone variations in East Asia using total column ozone data based on satellite and ground observations and compared the results and trends derived from a multi-linear regression (MLR) model. We found that the MLR model has relatively poor explanatory power for recent extraterrestrial and dynamical proxies, but the uncertainty can be reduced using monthly data and atmospheric proxies. The ozone trend in East Asia had the greatest increase in the vicinity of the Korean Peninsula and Manchuria from 1997 to 2017 (~1% per decade). Similarly, the trend derived from Brewer spectrophotometer data was 1.02 ± 1.45% per decade in Pohang and 1.27 ± 0.85% per decade in Seoul. When the analysis period was extended to 2020, the impact of atmospheric variability was greater, suggesting that recent climate change can increasingly contribute to total ozone variability.

The ground-based ozone observation instrument, Brewer spectrophotometer (Brewer), was used to evaluate the quality of the total ozone column (TOC) produced by multiple polar-orbit satellite measurements at three stations in Antarctica (King Sejong, Jang Bogo, and Zhongshan stations). While all satellite TOCs showed high correlations with Brewer TOCs (R = ~0.8 to 0.9), there are some TOC differences among satellite data in austral spring, which is mainly attributed to the bias of Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) TOC. The quality of satellite TOCs is consistent between Level 2 and 3 data, implying that “which satellite TOC is used” can induce larger uncertainty than “which spatial resolution is used” for the investigation of the Antarctic TOC pattern. Additionally, the quality of satellite TOC is regionally different (e.g., OMI TOC is a little higher at the King Sejong station, but lower at the Zhongshan station than the Brewer TOC). Thus, it seems necessary to consider the difference of multiple satellite data for better assessing the spatiotemporal pattern of Antarctic TOC.

We investigated the influence of long-range transboundary transport (LRTT) on the aerosol concentrations in the Korean peninsula using the ground- and satellite-based remote sensing with back-trajectory calculations during the Korea-United States Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) campaign. Specifically, aerosol optical depth (AOD) observations from a geostationary satellite can directly provide the progression and evolution of aerosol plume transport. During high pollution cases in western Korea, we found the AOD enhancement over the Yellow Sea and east-central China, at maximum >200% over the pathway of LRTT compared to the mean condition. Particularly, high AOD in the Shandong peninsula appears coincidentally with the high AOD over South Korea in a day, revealing the strong influence of the east-central Chinese emission. Back-trajectory patterns remarkably capture the movement of high AOD bands detected by the geostationary satellite monitoring. LRTT cases through the inside of boundary layer at east-central China usually contribute to the high AOD in Korea, while air-masses above the boundary layer in north China and Mongolia do not much relate to the Korean pollution, showing the importance for both the direction and height of the air-mass movement. Travel speed is another significant factor to describe the LRTT effect. Despite the large effect of LRTT to both urban and rural sites in Korea, sometimes urban sites are more affected by the domestic emission when the air-mass travels shorter than ∼250 km per day, notifying that the effect of Korean domestic emission cannot be negligible as well. Our findings reveal that usage of geostationary satellite observations enables us to better evaluate the influence of LRTT on the local air pollution.

We investigated the characteristics of the total ozone column (TOC) around West Antarctica (near the Weddell Sea) compared with ambient meteorological factors. For this analysis, we used ground-based and satellite TOC measurements as well as meteorology (air temperature, potential vorticity and wind field) from reanalysis data. Long-term patterns of TOC show the large year-to-year variation (e.g., maximumly ∼200 DU at King Sejong) but a steady recovering trend recently. Despite a generally consistent pattern, the TOC around West Antarctica did not correlate well between high- and low-latitude regions during austral spring; this result implies that the ozone hole area had a spatial variation over West Antarctica. The TOC pattern around West Antarctica correlated well with air temperature but showed a vertical difference; high positive correlations appeared in the lower stratosphere (maximumly R > 0.9 at ∼50–100 hPa height) showing enhanced ozone depletion in colder conditions, but negative correlations appeared in the upper stratosphere (minimum R 0.9 at ∼500–600 K height) during the austral spring but a moderately negative correlation in the lower stratosphere (minimum R

Spring dust frequency in northeast Asia has been investigated using various approaches to understand the mechanisms of dust emission and transport. However, little attention has been paid to the linkage between dust activity and the Siberian High (SH), particularly when the SH pressure system is highly variable. In this study, we characterize the possible physical mechanisms of dust emission and transport associated with the Siberian High Intensity (SHI) and Siberian High Position Index (SHPI) in March using 18 years of ground-based observations and reanalysis data. We found that when the SHI was strong and the SH’s center was farther east (“Strong–East period”), surface and atmospheric temperatures were cooler than when the SHI was weak and the SH’s center was farther west (“Weak-West period”), due to anomalous anticyclonic pressure and strong easterlies. As a result, a reduction in the meridional temperature gradient in the lower atmosphere suppressed dust emission and transport, due to stagnant atmospheric conditions. This anomalous anticyclonic pressure in the Strong-East case seems to reduce the development of extratropical cyclones (ETC) in northeast Asia, leading to a less effective dust transport. A case study with composite analysis also showed a similar physical mechanism: stagnant air accompanying weakened westerlies in the Strong-East period suppressed dust transport to South Korea. Our findings reveal that the intensity and position of the SH can be utilized to identify spring transboundary air pollutants in northeast Asia.

By using multiple satellite measurements, the changes of the aerosol optical depth (AOD) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) over South Korea were investigated from January to March 2020 to evaluate the COVID-19 effect on the regional air quality. The NO2 decrease in South Korea was found but not significant, which indicates the effects of spontaneous social distancing under the maintenance of ordinary life. The AODs in 2020 were normally high in January, but they became lower starting from February. Since the atmosphere over Eastern Asia was unusually stagnant in January and February 2020, the AOD decrease in February 2020 clearly reveals the positive effect of the COVID-19. Considering the insignificant NO2 decrease in South Korea and the relatively long lifetime of aerosols, the AOD decrease in South Korea may be more attributed to the improvement of the air quality in neighboring countries. In March, regional atmosphere became well mixed and ventilated over South Korea, contributing to large enhancement of air quality. While the social activity was reduced after the COVID-19 outbreak, the regional meteorology should be also examined significantly to avoid the biased evaluation of the social impact on the change of the regional air quality.

Arctic tundra is undergoing a rapid transition due to global warming and will be exposed to snow-free conditions for longer periods under projected climate scenarios. Regional climate modeling is useful for understanding and predicting climate change in the Arctic tundra, however, the lack of in-situ observations of surface energy fluxes and the planetary boundary layer (PBL) structure hinders accurate predictions of local and regional climate around the Arctic. In this study, we investigate the performance of the Polar-optimized version of the Weather Research and Forecasting model (PWRF) in the Arctic tundra on clear days in summer. Based on simultaneous observations of surface fluxes and the PBL structure in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada, our validation shows that the PWRF simulates a drier environment, leading to a larger Bowen ratio and a warmer atmosphere compared to observations. Further sensitivity analyses indicate that the model biases are mainly from the uncertainties in physical parameters such as surface albedo and emissivity, the solar constant, and the model top height, rather than structural flaws in the model physics. Importantly, the PWRF reproduces the observations more accurately when the observed soil moisture is fed into the simulation. This indicates that there must be improvements in simulations of the land-atmosphere interaction at the Arctic tundra, not only in the accuracy of the initial soil moisture conditions but also in soil hydraulic properties and drainage processes. The mixing diagram analysis also shows that the entrainment process between the PBL and the overlying atmosphere needs to be improved for better weather and climate simulation. Our findings shed light on modeling studies in the Arctic region by disentangling the model error sources from uncertainties by parameters and physics package options.

The attenuating effects of clouds and aerosols on global horizontal irradiance (GHI) and ultraviolet erythemal irradiance (UVER) were evaluated and compared using data from four sites in South Korea (Gangneung, Pohang, Mokpo, and Gosan) for the period 2005&ndash, 2016. It was found that GHI and UVER are affected differently by various attenuating factors, resulting in an increase in the ratio of UVER to GHI with a decrease in the clearness index of GHI. A comparative analysis of the clearness indices of GHI and UVER identified an almost linear relationship between two transmittances by applying UVER with fixed slant ozone ( UVER 300 ) and there was a latitudinal difference in the relationship. Some nonlinearity remained in this relationship, which suggests a contribution by other factors such as clouds and aerosols. Variations of the UVER 300 ratio to GHI with cloud cover and aerosol optical depth were analyzed. The ratio increased with cloud cover and decreased with aerosol optical depth, indicating that clouds attenuate GHI more efficiently than UVER and that the attenuation by aerosols is greater for UVER than for GHI. A multiple linear regression analysis of the clearness indices of GHI and UVER 300 quantitively demonstrates differences in the radiation-reducing effects of clouds and aerosols, with some regional differences by site that can be attributed to local climatic characteristics in South Korea.

Vertical column density (VCD) of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was measured using Pandora spectrometers at six sites on the Korean Peninsula during the Megacity Air Pollution Studies-Seoul (MAPS-Seoul) campaign from May to June 2015. To estimate the tropospheric NO(2) VCD, the stratospheric NO(2) VCD from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) was subtracted from the total NO(2) VCD from Pandora. European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis wind data was used to analyze variations in tropospheric NO(2) VCD caused by wind patterns at each site. The Yonsei/SEO site was found to have the largest tropospheric NO(2) VCD (1.49 DU on average) from a statistical analysis of hourly tropospheric NO(2) VCD measurements. At rural sites, remarkably low NO(2) VCDs were observed. However, a wind field analysis showed that trans-boundary transport and emissions from domestic sources lead to an increase in tropospheric NO(2) VCD at NIER/BYI and KMA/AMY, respectively. At urban sites, high NO(2) VCD values were observed under conditions of low wind speed, which were influenced by local urban emissions. Tropospheric NO(2) VCD at HUFS/Yongin increases under conditions of significant transport from urban area of Seoul according to a correlation analysis that considers the transport time lag. Significant diurnal variations were found at urban sites during the MAPS-Seoul campaign, but not at rural sites, indicating that it is associated with diurnal patterns of NO(2) emissions from dense traffic.

During the Megacity Air Pollution Studies-Seoul (MAPS-Seoul) campaign from May to June 2015, aerosol optical properties in Korea were obtained based on the AERONET sunphotometer measurement at five sites (Anmyon, Gangneung_WNU, Gosan_SNU, Hankuk_UFS, and Yonsei_University). Using this dataset, we examine regional aerosol types by applying a number of known aerosol classification methods. We thoroughly utilize five different methods to categorize the regional aerosol types and evaluate the results from each method by inter-comparison. The differences and similarities among the results are also discussed, contingent upon the usage of AERONET inversion products, such as the single scattering albedo. Despite several small differences, all five methods suggest the same general features in terms of the regionally dominant aerosol type: Fine-mode aerosols with highly absorbing radiative properties dominate at Hankuk_UFS and Yonsei_University; non-absorbing fine-mode particles form a large portion of the aerosol at Gosan_SNU; and coarse-mode particles cause some effects at Anmyon. The analysis of 3-day back-trajectories is also performed to determine the relationship between classified types at each site and the regional transport pattern. In particular, the spatiotemporally short-scale transport appears to have a large influence on the local aerosol properties. As a result, we find that the domestic emission in Korea significantly contributes to the high dominance of radiation-absorbing aerosols in the Seoul metropolitan area and the air-mass transport from China largely affects the western coastal sites, such as Anmyon and Gosan_SNU.

Using NASA’s Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2) reanalysis for aerosol optical depth (AOD) and satellite-observed carbon monoxide (CO) data, we examined the basic pattern of AOD variations over the three polar stations of Korea: the Jangbogo and King Sejong stations in Antarctica and the Dasan station in the Arctic. AOD values at the King Sejong and Dasan stations show maximum peaks in spring and appear to be associated with large amounts of atmospheric CO emitted from natural burning and biomass burning. The Jangbogo station shows a much lower AOD than the other two stations and does not appear to be strongly affected by the transport of airborne particles generated from mid-latitude regions. All three polar stations show an increasing trend in AOD in general, indicating that the polar background air quality is becoming polluted.

The typical spatio-temporal evolutions of large-scale weather patterns before and after high-concentration events of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm (PM10) (High-PM10) over the Korean Peninsula were investigated. Using the K-means clustering method, five significant large-scale weather patterns associated with High-PM10 events were identified. Among the 91 High-PM10 events that occurred during winter/spring of 2007–2018, approximately 41% (38 cases) belonged to Cluster 1 and 5, characterized by upper-tropospheric downstream amplification of pressure anomaly originating from the Barents/Kara Sea of the Arctic Ocean. We refer to this pattern as the wave-train type. Concurrently with this pattern, southwesterly wind anomalies from southeastern China and significant descending air occurred over the Korean Peninsula, causing PM10 accumulation. Despite its dominance of occurrence, the wave-train type exhibited a relatively shorter mean duration of 1–2 days owing to its rapid development and traveling characteristics. Cluster 2 corresponded to approximately 29% (27 cases) of the total cases, and was characterized by a stagnant anticyclone over the northeastern Eurasia region. In the lower atmosphere, southerly winds dominated the Korean Peninsula. Vertical diffusion of PM10 was restricted by a vertically stable condition in the lower-to-mid-troposphere and a notably weak wind speed. Cluster 2 had the longest duration of 3 days and the highest mean PM10 concentration compared to the other clusters. Cluster 3 corresponded to approximately 13% (12 cases) of the total cases and exhibited a stagnant anticyclone centered at the Kamchatka region. In this case, weakened westerly is observed resulting in the characteristics of a circulation pattern that easily accumulates pollutants. Cluster 4 accounted for approximately 15% (14 cases) of all cases, and is a pattern in which air of PM10 inflows following the back of the cyclone located in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. We emphasize that most of High-PM10 events occurring over the Korean Peninsula are linked to the preceding upper-tropospheric large-scale circulation patterns. They control the low-level transports and accumulation of pollutants.

In this study, we present and compare regional correlations between CO total column density (TCD CO ) from the data set of Measurement of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT), and high-absorbing BC dominant aerosol optical depth (AOD BC ) from the retrieval algorithm using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) (MODIS-OMI algorithm, MOA). TCD CO shows positive relationship to both fine-mode AOD (AOD FM ) and AOD BC in general, but TCD CO better correlates with AOD BC than AOD FM . This enhanced correlation between TCD CO and AOD BC appears more clearly during spring and summer. Correlation between TCD CO and AOD BC is exceptionally poor in Northern Africa where the BC-dominated aerosols are frequently mixed with mineral dust particles from the Sahara. Another issue is also found in Southern Africa; the correlation between AOD BC and TCD CO in this region is not much higher than that between the AOD FM and TCD CO in spite of large occurrence of biomass burning and wildfire. This can be explained by the cloud perturbation near the source regions and dispersion effect due to the typical wind pattern. Correlations between AOD BC and TCD CO increase further when fire detected areas are only considered, but does not change much over the urban area. This difference clarifies the large contribution of burning events to the positive relationship between BC and CO. All findings in this study demonstrate a possible use of satellite CO product in evaluating the BC-dominated aerosol product from satellite remote sensing over the globe.

In this paper, we present a new climatology based on, the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS) version 3.5 data set from February 2004 to February 2013. This extends the ACE-FTS climatology to include profile information in the mesosphere and carbon-containing species in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Climatologies of 21 species, based on nine years of observations, are calculated, providing the most comprehensive and self-consistent climatology available from limb-viewing satellite measurements. Pressure levels from the upper troposphere to the mesosphere and lower thermosphere are included with similar to 3 to 4 km vertical resolution up to 10(-4) hPa (similar to 105 km). Volume mixing ratio values are filtered prior to the climatology estimation using the ACE-FTS data quality recommendations. The multi-year mean climatology contains zonal mean profiles for monthly and three-monthly (DJF, MAM, JJA, and SON) periods. These are provided with 5-degree spacing in either latitude or equivalent latitude. Also, the local daytime and nighttime distributions are provided separately for nitrogen-containing species, enabling diurnal differences to be investigated. Based on this climatology, examples of typical spatiotemporal patterns for trace gases in the mesosphere and for carbon-containing gases in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere are discussed. Springtime trans-Pacific transport of Asian air pollutants has been investigated in many ways to figure out its mechanism. Based on the Western Pacific (WP) pattern, one of climate variabilities in the Northern Hemisphere known to be associated with the pattern of atmospheric circulation over the North Pacific Ocean, in this study, we characterize the pattern of springtime trans-Pacific transport using long-term satellite measurements and reanalysis datasets. A positive WP pattern is characterized by intensification of the dipole structure between the northern Aleutian Low and the southern Pacific High over the North Pacific. The TOMS/OMI Aerosol Index (AI) and MOPITT CO show the enhancement of Asian pollutant transport across the Pacific during periods of positive WP pattern, particularly between 40 and 50°N. This enhancement is confirmed by high correlations of WP index with AI and CO between 40 and 50°N. To evaluate the influence of the WP pattern, we examine several cases of trans-Pacific transport reported in previous research. Interestingly, most trans-Pacific transport cases are associated with the positive WP pattern. During the period of negative WP pattern, reinforced cyclonic wave breaking is consistently found over the western North Pacific, which obstructs zonal advection across the North Pacific. However, some cases show the trans-Pacific transport of CO in the period of negative WP pattern, implying that the WP pattern is more influential on the transport of particles mostly emitted near ∼40°N. This study reveals that the WP pattern can be utilized to diagnose the strength of air pollutant transport from East Asia to North America.
